The pair publically disagreed during the presidential campaign, with Pope Francis appearing to question Mr Trump’s Christian faith over his plans to build a border wall with Mexico.

As far as I can tell from history benevolent dictatorship is a mythical as the unicorn, Strong man rule is still a dictatorship that will end up oppressing the people. Trump’s inauguration, ‘two Americas,’ and the noise machine

Today, Saturday, 21 January, the first America is doing things like being at work (earning a living), stacking sandbags because there’s another storm coming in, recreating with the kids because it’s Saturday and time is precious, watching the NBA games, preparing to watch the NFL conference championships tomorrow, getting in some target practice at the range, doing the weekly chores, knitting, whittling, painting, singing, reading, snowboarding, weightlifting, volunteering, playing bagpipes, playing chess, having ritual cigars and brandy, hanging out with the other old coots at the doughnut shop, shopping eBay and Amazon for people’s upcoming birthdays, barbecuing in the snow (because who doesn’t?), picking up trash on highways, driving miles and miles to visit in-laws and grands, attending concerts, ice-skating, parasailing, going to cooking class, and kvetching on Facebook about, among other things, the decline and fall of English grammar.
The second America, meanwhile, has been shrieking about Trump for weeks, continued shrieking about Trump throughout the inauguration ceremony on Friday, and is now shrieking about Trump some more.
The folks on the left I understand. Let’s say I’m not surprised by them. They see Trump as a threat to the political privileges they have had for the last 25 years, amplified and empowered by both the media and the overblown bureaucracies of America’s federal, state, and big-city governments.

Although the video is almost two years old, it’s making its rounds again on social media thanks to Iraqi-born atheist Faisal Saeed Al Mutar (worth following!). It is a subtitled part of a much longer program by German broadcaster ZDF. It features the Egyptian-born political scientist Hamed Abdel-Samad, who’s a colourful figure, to say the least, confronts a female Islamist with the fact that Islamic State has everything to do with Islam. His arguments are as articulate as they are compelling.
At the same time, it gives a stark insight into the ways these kinds of discussions are moderated and guided, by the choice of guests and their strategy of denying an alternative viewpoint. If it is less noticeable, it is because Abdel-Samad manages to get his point across regardless.

Suspect In Shooting Outside MILO Event Claims Self Defence, Released Without Charges
The man apprehended earlier this morning in relation to the shooting outside the MILO event at the University of Washington has been released by police the Seattle Times reports.
The suspect wanted in connection to the shooting of a 34 year old man turned himself in to police this morning and was promptly questioned by the University of Washington police.
The Seattle Times article reports that, “one of the law-enforcement officials said the man who fired the gun claimed the man he shot was some type of white supremacist.”
The suspect was released without charges pending further investigation and no one else is being investigated in relation to the incident according to UW Police.
The shooting victim was reportedly in critical but stable condition following surgery at at Harborview Medical Center. Very little is known about the man’s identity at this time. A photo of the man being assisted by police officers at the scene of the shooting can be seen below.

The Secret Service has reportedly said it will open an investigation into Madonna after the singer told the Women’s March on Washington that she had thought about ‘blowing up the White House’.
Donning a black p***yhat, the music icon caused controversy by dropping the F-bomb four times, sparking a slew of apologies from broadcasters airing the protest live.

“The men have been arrested in Sweden on suspicion of gang-raping a woman, after one allegedly live-streamed the crime on a closed Facebook page.
According to Sweden’s Aftonbladet tabloid, the alleged crime took place in an apartment in the city of Uppsala early on Sunday morning, with police receiving a tip-off just before 9am.
The victim was apparently close to unconscious at the time the act was perpetrated.
“The first thing you think is “How can you do such a thing to a girl? and how can you do it live when you know that you are going to go there?” a former member of the closed Facebook group told Sweden’s Expressen. “I think of course that it is screwed, totally sick.”
Ivan Åslund from the local police would not confirm the claims that the crime had been live-streamed.
“I am aware that information is circulating about that, but it is not something I can elaborate on,” he told Sweden’s TT newswire. “But of course it is deeply disturbing if that is the case.””
BREITBART – SWEDEN – Three Arrested After Woman’s Rape Livestreamed on Facebook
Three men have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated rape, after hundreds watched the alleged rape of a woman in Uppsala broadcast live on Facebook.
Witnesses say one of the men drew a gun and threatened viewers during the broadcast, and the arrival of police to the crime scene was also caught on camera, reports Swedish newspaper Upsala Nya Tidning.
Several people who contacted local media said the assault took place from 3.30 am, and was broadcast live on the page of a closed group on Facebook. Police were contacted by a number of witnesses who saw the attack unfold on the social media website.
Viewers say they watched as officers arrived at the scene where the attack had been taking place, after which the livestream to the apartment was finally shut off.
Police in the Swedish city confirmed the arrest of three young men for aggravated rape.
“He pulled off her clothes and lay on top of her”, said witness Josefine Lundgren of what she saw during the broadcast, upon seeing which she “immediately” called the police.
During the livestream one of the men pulled out a gun and threatened viewers, challenging them to come to the apartment from where the scenes were being filmed, the Ånge resident said.
“This is insane”, she told Expressen. “Only sick people could do such a thing … I hope these guys are ashamed, and that they sit and think about what they have done.”
On Flashback, Sweden’s largest internet forum, users who said they witnessed the alleged rape as it was broadcast identified the attackers as a group of men of Middle Eastern appearance.
Several posts on Flashback linked to what their authors say are screenshots from the livestream, one of which appears to show a police officer at the scene.
The forum’s first post relating to the attack says that during the broadcast, one of the men could be heard trying to persuade the alleged victim, who it describes as having been “totally numb and intoxicated”, to say she had not been raped.
Police in Uppsala refused to give details on the arrest, which Fria Tider reported took place just after 9 on Sunday morning.
“ Three people have been arrested but otherwise I can’t give any further details, duty officer Nina Dahlström told Upsala Nya Tidning.

“ONE of the Queen’s Chaplains has resigned amid a row over a passage of the Koran read out at a Glasgow cathedral which denies Jesus is the son of God.
Reverend Canon Gavin Ashenden stepped down as one of the monarch’s 33 chaplains in order to have more freedom to “speak out on behalf of the faith”, following discussions with Buckingham Palace.
The controversy centres on an interfaith service held at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral over the Christmas period, where a chapter from the Islamic text was read out.
The chosen verses tell the story of Christ’s birth, but claim he was not the son of God and should not be worshipped as such.
The reading sparked widespread outrage amongst the Christian community, and Police Scotland is currently investigating a series of abusive messages directed at the cathedral on social media.
Speaking to Radio 4’s Sunday programme, Reverend Ashenden said: “The problem with what happened in Glasgow was that although it was presented as a way of building bridges and a way of educating people, it was done badly in the wrong way, in the wrong place, in the wrong context.
“There are number of members of the congregation who have written open letters complaining of the profound upset they experienced as people of the Eucharistic community who had come to worship Christ.
“So to have a reading from the Koran at that point was a fairly serious error for the Christian worshipping community.
“But to choose the reading they chose doubled the error. Of all the passages you might have read likely to cause offence that was one of the most problematic.”
He announced his resignation on his blog, ahead of an the programme’s broadcast.

The term “Black Robe Regiment” referred not to a literal regiment of soldiers that wore black robes into battle but rather to the influential clergymen who promoted American independence and supported the military struggle against Britain. By encouraging the Patriot cause, those ministers helped muster critical support among members of their congregation—support the British begrudgingly acknowledged as vital to maintaining the colonists’ frustrating resistance to British attempts to restore Parliamentary rule.
In its implicit comparison of symbolic support to a specific body of troops, the term “Black Robe Regiment” is somewhat similar to the “fifth column” identified by the Spanish general Emilio Mola. During that country’s Civil War in 1936, Mola boasted that he had four columns of soldiers marching upon Madrid and a “fifth column” of sympathizers already living in the city who would support the army once it arrived. The term “fifth column” has since come to refer generally to civilian supporters living within a populace, even though that group usually lacks formal organization.

CNN – Imam delivers message to Trump at inaugural service
Washington (CNN) An imam who had been expected to deliver the Islamic call to prayer at an interfaith religious service for President Donald Trump instead recited two verses from the Quran that contained clear political messages for the new president and his administration .
Imam Mohamed Magid, executive director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, is a well-known figure in Washington, but he had been sharply criticized by fellow Muslims for agreeing to take part in the event Saturday at Washington National Cathedral.
Magid was one of 26 religious leaders from a diverse array of faiths to participate in the service, an inaugural tradition since George Washington. The event’s program said Magid would recite the “Muslim call to prayer,” leading many to believe he would intone the adhan, the melodic 🙂 🙁 call to worship that issues forth from many mosques five times a day.
Instead, the imam chose two passages from the Quran with clear political implications, especially at a time of racial and religious strife, when many American Muslims feel marginalized and mistrusted.
Addressing the capitol’s power brokers, including Trump’s family and Vice President Michael Pence, Magid read first in Arabic and then provided an English translation.
The first verse he read was from Surah Al-Hujarat, in which Allah says:
“O humankind, We have created you a single male and female (Adam and Eve) and made you into nations and tribes and communities, that you may know one another. Really, the most honored of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you, and Allah has all knowledge…”
The second verse he read was from Surah Ar-Rum:
“And among the signs of Allah is the creation of heaven and earth, and the variation in your languages and your colors. Verily, in that are signs for those who know.”
A spokesman for Magid said his recitation of the verses had been approved by officials at the Washington National Cathedral.
“After the election, when a lot of things were said about Muslims, and there were questions about Muslims’ loyalty, these verses were intended to convey the message that we must come together and respect diversity — that Allah made us this way,” said Rizwan Jaka, board chairman at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society.
Like Magid, Episcopalians had been criticized for hosting and praying with Trump, whose campaign included harsh language about Muslims, Mexicans and women.
The Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of the cathedral, also chose a prayer that spoke to the country’s divisive political climate, asking God to “break down the walls that separate us” and “take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts.”
Praying with the president
For years, Magid has been a familiar face at interfaith and government events in Washington.
He has met with former President Barack Obama to discuss fatherhood and hosted members of Obama’s administration at the large complex of Islamic centers Magid leads in Northern Virginia. Last year, the FBI gave that complex, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, a community leadership award for strengthening ties between local Muslims and law enforcement.
From 2010-14, Magid led the Islamic Society of North America, whose conferences draw thousands of Muslims each year, and the genial 🙂 🙁 Sudanese-American regularly makes the list of the world’s 500 most influential Muslims.
But some American Muslims criticized Magid for agreeing to take part in the National Prayer Service with Trump.
Many American Muslims have accused Trump of stoking suspicion about their religion by saying “Islam hates us,” proposing a registry to monitor Muslims and pledging, at one time, to bar Muslims from entering the United States. (That plan may be modified to “extreme vetting,” Trump’s team says.) The president’s new National Security Adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, has called Islam a “cancer.”
Before Saturday’s service, Hussam Ayloush, who heads the Council of American-Islamic Relations’ Los Angeles chapter, compared Trump to the proverbial emperor without any clothes and urged Magid not to “hand him a towel.”
“In the face of unreluctant and unrepentant defamation and animosity toward Islam and Muslims (and many other communities) by this Trump team , a symbolic participation that does not involve any opportunity to preach or make a statement does not qualify as engaging or correcting the wrongdoers, but rather enabling them and providing them with a token cover for their bigotry,” Ayloush said in a statement.
Ayloush also said that Magid’s role in the prayer service “undermines the courageous and principled activism of so many Muslims and allies” who have challenged Trump’s rhetoric and proposals.
In response, Magid said the role of religious leaders is “to share the TRUTH and values of Islam to everyone, including those in power. “
“Do not assume that the efforts to engage those who have misconceptions of Islam are in any way contradictory to other efforts to influence public opinion,” the imam said. “Rather they go hand in hand.”
Muslim-Americans need to share their message both through public protests and private meetings with government officials, Magid said, implying that the Prophet Mohammed would agree.
“Many people came to do harm to Prophet Mohammed, and after engagement and getting to know him they changed their mind in a positive manner.”

The White House will on Monday announce that the US embassy in Israel is to move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, according to an unconfirmed report by an Israeli news outlet.
Channel 2 cited an anonymous source as saying a member of the Trump administration would announce the highly controversial move on the President’s first full working day in office.
The news channel said it had received no confirmation of the claim and there has been no public statement on the move since Friday’s inauguration of the new US President.
Relocating the US embassy to Jerusalem would represent a major break with US policy.
Donald Trump has said repeatedly that he intends to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem, despite warnings the move would violate international law and destroy the peace process.
Earlier in January, US officials and Israeli Foreign Ministry sources said the incoming US ambassador to Israel could be based in Jerusalem, while the official embassy building remains in Tel Aviv.
Relocating the embassy to Jerusalem would be seen as a provocative move by Mr Trump’s critics as the city is claimed by both the Israelis and Palestinians as their capital.
Israel annexed east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War. The move has not been recognised by the international community.
Mr Trump has also appointed a new US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, who is considered a supporter of settlements.
Meanwhile, Israel has approved building permits for hundreds of homes in three East Jerusalem settlements.
Israel expects Mr Trump to end the US government’s criticism of building projects on disputed land.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to speak with Mr Trump by telephone on Sunday.

Trump Plans to Eliminate NEA, NEH, Cut Spending by $10.5 Trillion
The Trump administration is seeking major cuts to federal spending upon taking office, with plans to eliminate agencies and programs to reduce the budget by over $10 trillion.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities would be eliminated, according to a new report on the administration’s spending priorities published by the Hill.
Both arts agencies have budgets of roughly $147 million. The NEA awards millions of dollars worth of grants for art projects each year, which have included plays about assassinating Christopher Columbus, food stamps, and gun-control activist lesbians, climate change poetry, and “Doggie Hamlet.”

German police arrest terror suspect in Neuss linked to Austrian Islamist
German authorities said the arrest showed the close cooperation between European security agencies. The suspect and an Austrian teenager have been accused of plotting bomb attacks in Germany.
German police arrested a 21-year-old man accused of “planning a serious crime targeting the state,” they announced on Sunday.
Authorities have alleged the suspect was linked to an Austrian teenager who was arrested in Vienna on Friday. He was alleged to have been planning a terrorist attack.
Police suspect he was linked to radical Islamist groups. The Austrian teenager, of Albanian heritage, had stayed in Neuss as a guest of the 21-year-old and discussed attacks against the German armed forces, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in Düsseldorf said.
“The correlation of the investigation between the current case and Germany is clear,” the spokesman of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior said on Sunday.
On Saturday the Austrian ministry said the Vienna arrest had foiled an imminent attack, possibly on the Vienna subway system.
There were “indications that such an attack was planned and just about to happen,” Konrad Kogler, the ministry’s General Director of Public Security, told Austria’s “ORF Radio.” The explosion of a bomb in the underground was “one of the possible scenarios,” he said.
SEK operation in Neuss
German news magazine “Focus” reported that the elite SEK command force stormed the man’s Neuss flat on suspicion of planning a bombing aimed at police and soldiers.
“Focus” said the man and the teenage suspect were believed to have “experimented with material to build explosives” in the flat in Neuss. It cited anonymous judicial sources for the story.
It reported that police confiscated computers and mobile phones from the home, and temporarily detained the suspect’s wife.
“Focus” said the Austrian teenager told investigators that he had sworn allegiance to the so-called “Islamic State” (IS) group and revealed the link to the accomplice in Germany.
State police in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, declined to provide further details.
International cooperation
“The arrest shows that the security authorities are cooperating well, quickly and confidently in the fight against terrorism,” said Interior Minister Ralf Jäger.
On Friday, German Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maizière contacted his Austrian colleague Wolfgang Sobotka and offered support, according to a ministry spokesman in Berlin.
Germany was on high alert after a December terror attack on a Berlin Christmas market.

Hamed Abdel-Samad: When we were children, we used to say: “I am a Muslim and proud of it,” without knowing what we were proud of and why we are Muslims. Islam kept us in a box and we could not see anything else, but when we get out of the box, we begin to see other ideas and angles, which acquaint us with things in Islam, which we could not know all the while that we were locked in that box.

There is a new trend in the Arab world, and especially in Egypt, of reforming Islam and renewing the religious discourse. People like Islam Behery, Dr. Adnan Ibrahim, Dr. Mohamed Shahrour, and others say that Islam in the days of the Prophet Muhammad was very beautiful – there were no problems, and it was a tolerant and merciful religion – but that then came the Umayyads and Abbasids, and began to distort Islam, or to interpret it in an erroneous way. For 1,400 years, according to them, Islam continued to be distorted, misunderstood, and misused, awaiting the arrival of people who would have a correct understanding of Islam, and who would interpret it, correctly, as a religion of mercy and peace.
I have a completely different theory on this issue. I believe that Islam began as a savage religion. That was its nature. The cities of Mecca and Medina, in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, did not follow any civilization or culture. These were tribes that gathered and raided the Arabian Peninsula, and then began to raid the entire world. When the Umayyads and the Abbasids came along, they were the ones to begin the refinement of that beast, and to usher it into civilization. They were the ones who invented a biography for the prophet Muhammad, in order to place him within a certain civilized context. They invented the disciplines of Islamic jurisprudence and hadith, in order to place Islam within a certain context.

“With the arrest of a Pakistani woman in Jeddah’s Al-Naseem district during a security operation on Saturday, the number of Pakistanis arrested for involvement in terror activities has gone up to 69.
Fatima Ramadan Balochi Murad was arrested along with her Saudi husband from an apartment in Al-Naseem district by security agencies after a tip-off.
Last July, a Pakistani terrorist named Abdullah Qalzar Khan blew himself up near Solaiman Fakeih Hospital in Jeddah.
The security authorities arrested 49 Pakistani residents and put them under interrogation since the bombing in July.
A terrorism operation attempt was also foiled last October in Jeddah. It involved two Pakistanis — Solaiman Arab Deen and Farman Naqshaband Khan. They had planned to carry out blasts in Al-Jowhara Stadium.
A recent statement issued by the Interior Ministry through its Tawasul (communications) portal said that 5,085 terror suspects from 40 countries are in detention in five intelligence prisons in the Kingdom.
The statement said that there are 4,254 Saudis detained in intelligence prisons constituting the largest number of suspects. The Saudis are followed by 282 Yemenis and 218 Syrians. There are three suspects from the US and one each from France, Belgium and Canada.”

“At least 41 militants were killed in the latest counter-terrorism operations in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Sunday.
According to a statement by MoD, at least 25 militants were also wounded during the operations which were jointly conducted by the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF).
The statement further added that the operations were conducted in Kapisa, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Kunduz, and Helmand provinces.
The majority of the militants were killed in Khakrez and Maiwand districts where 33 militants were killed and 15 others were wounded, MoD said.
At least 5 of the militants were killed in Buz Kandahari and Hazrat Sultan areas of Kunduz, the statement said, adding that 10 militants were also wounded.
The Afghan forces also killed 3 militants during a separate operation in Zurmat district of Paktia province.
The anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban insurgents have not commented regarding the report so far.
The Afghan forces are busy conducting their annual counter-terrorism operation which were launched in response to Taliban’s annual spring offensive.
The group announced its offensive in mid-April last year amid ongoing efforts to end the violence through reconciliation and negotiations.”

Bill calls for abolishment of ATF
A bill has been proposed in U.S. House of Representatives that would eliminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The ATF Elimination Act, which was reintroduced by Wisconsin Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner on Thursday, calls for an ATF hiring freeze and would transfer the ATF’s current responsibilities to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
According to the bill, the FBI and DEA would need to submit a plan for scaling down ATF affairs within 180 days of the bill’s enactment into law. Within one year, the FBI would have to issue a report to the General Services Administration regarding ATF property that will either need to be transferred or excessed.
In a press release Thursday, Rep. Sensenbrenner issued the following statement regarding the proposal:
Despite our country being trillions of dollars in debt, government spending continues to rise. Common sense budgeting solutions are necessary, and the ATF Elimination Act is one measure we can take to reduce spending, redundancy, and practice responsible governance. The ATF is a scandal-ridden, largely duplicative agency that has been branded by failure and lacks a clear mission. It is plagued by backlogs, funding gaps, hiring challenges, and a lack of leadership. These facts make it a logical place to begin draining the swamp and acting in the best interest of the American taxpayer.
The ATF drew heat in 2011 after the so-called Fast and Furious operation, in which the ATF willingly let Mexican drug cartels buy illegal firearms in order to track the guns and then arrest the criminals carrying them.
The operation went drastically wrong as agents lost track of the guns. Instead of leading to arrests of high-ranking cartel members, the firearms were reportedly used in numerous murders in Mexico
