THE ONGOING migrant crisis will tear Europe apart, the former Minister President of Bavaria has claimed.
The crisis has exposed a potentially fatal “fundamental cultural and social rift” in the bloc, according to Edmund Stoiber, who led the German province until 2007.
He also warned the European Union (EU) not to attempt any “revenge desires” against the UK in response to Brexit.
Mr Stoiber wrote in the Huffington Post: “The mistakes of the refugee crisis are tearing Europe apart. The next twelve months will decide the future of Europe.
“Britain’s upcoming exit from the EU, the so-called Brexit, the so far futile search for a common European response to the refugee crisis, as well as the continual, unsuccessful violations of the European Stability and Growth Pact, are probably the biggest challenges the EU is facing.”
He said Brussels should do everything it could to keep the UK on side, for fear of missing out on the country’s economic power.

(CNN)A computer outage at US airports Monday evening left thousands of inbound international travelers stuck behind customs screening stations for hours on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
The US Customs and Border Protection processing systems were back online at all airports later in the night, spokesman Daniel Hetlage said — but not before creating long lines of disgruntled holiday travelers.
The outage lasted from about 5 to 9 p.m. ET, Hetlage said. Airport officials and travelers across the country reported delays ranging from 30 minutes to two hours.

This development is noteworthy for a number of reasons, but I want to highlight just one.
On New Year’s Day, China inaugurated the first freight train service to London. We’ve known for a long time now that the world is becoming a “smaller” place, in that it is more and more accessible, from great distances, with each passing year. But we rarely stop to think, these days, about which realms of human affairs are being affected by the increase in accessibility.
One of them is military. The interior reaches of Asia have been a conundrum for military logistics for millennia. Trying to move troops and supplies across the vast Eurasian land mass has defeated many a commander, leaving him overextended and exposed, at or on the way to his destination. Famously, in World War II, the German army was bogged down trying to ship materiel by rail into parts of Russia because the gauge of railway track was different. The track suitable for German and other European trains literally cut out, and those trains couldn’t go further.

The main danger would be air strikes taking down bridges, any other damage to the rails could be repaired withing 12 hours or less if there are repairs crews spread out along the rail line. Two people were detained at Istanbul Ataturk Airport, Tuesday, in relation to the New Year’s Eve nightclub attack that left 39 dead.
The two suspects are reportedly non-Turkish nationals and were taken to the airports’ Homeland Security Directorate and later, to central Istanbul for police questioning.
Turkish authorities have released a photograph of the suspected killer, who is still thought to be at large. Eight others were detained in relation to the crime prior to the airport arrests.

The suspect in a New Year’s Day massacre at an Istanbul nightclub has been identified as an alleged ISIS militant from Kyrgyzstan.
Turkish authorities are hunting 28-year-old Iakhe Mashrapov in connection with the shooting spree which left 39 people dead and nearly 70 injured.
It was claimed Mashrapov fought in Syria for ISIS and was “specially selected” to carry out the nightclub rampage as the victims welcomed 2017.
He reportedly moved to Turkey from Kyrgyzstan with his wife and two kids on November 20 and spent some time in Konya province before returning to Istanbul just days prior to the terror attack.
Police have arrested 14 people, including the suspect’s wife, after they reportedly traced a phone call he made from a taxi driver’s mobile on the way to the popular Reina nightclub.
Abdulkadir Selvi, a columnist for the Hurriyet newspaper, claimed the attacker had been trained in street fighting in residential areas in Syria and used those techniques in the attack as he shot from the hip like he was in a “street war”.
Selvi wrote that the gunman was “specially selected” for the shooting and his “hit rate” was high, with just 28 bullets failing to hit a target.
Reports claimed he fled Turkey following the shooting, and a photo of his passport picture has been circulated online.
Two foreign nationals with alleged links to the attack were arrested at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport on Tuesday, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
It said the suspects were arrested at the international flights terminal.
Earlier a video selfie released by authorities showed the suspect smirking on camera before the massacre.

“THE French government has been accused of hiding their inability to control the country’s sinister New Year’s Eve torching tradition as the interior ministry claimed the night passed “without any major incident” – but almost 1,000 cars were set on fire and destroyed.
On Sunday, the French officials chose to release a low figure of 650 destroyed cars which only indicated the vehicles that were “set on fire” – a figure which did not include those car that were completely destroyed and engulfed in ensuing flames.
But the official figures revealed a 17 per cent rise since last year’s arson attacks, as a total of 945 parked cars were torched during the terrifying tradition.
Pierre Henry Brandet, a spokesman for the French interior ministry, said: “Once again this year, the overall number of vehicles burned demonstrates that, however intolerable, the phenomenon is contained”.
In reality, 454 people were arrested by police throughout the night of New Year’s Eve and 301 of them were taken into custody.
Marine Le Pen’s National Front far-right party immediately condemned the French government for providing the figures that were “extremely hazy”.
A National Front statement read: “The new interior minister Bruno Le Roux… (initially) didn’t communicate the number of vehicles burned and considers that the number of cars directly set on fire to be ‘contained’ while even this constitutes a significant rise of 8 per cent.”
Protesting his government’s innocence, Mr Brandet said the initial low figures were “the most pertinent and the most coherent”.
Mr Brandet added: “There is absolutely no attempt at hiding anything. You have to look at the trend over several years, and what is significant is that there has been a significant drop over five years.
“These incidents are not tolerable and the perpetrators must be found and answer for their acts before justice.”
The custom of setting vehicles alight on New Year’s Eve is said to have kicked off in the highly deprived and immigrant areas of Strasbourg, Germany and eastern France during the 1990’s.
This year, a firefighter in the eastern department of Ain was injured as he tried to extinguish a burning car.
But the 2005 riots are still branded the worst in France as 8,973 vehicles were damaged, two people died and 126 police and firefighters were injured.

It’s not that we haven’t been able to put this together from information that was already out there. We’ve known for some time that the Obama administration was warned about the rise of ISIS as early as August 2012, by field intelligence forwarded from the Defense Intelligence Agency (then under Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who is now Donald Trump’s national security adviser-designate).
We knew when ISIS attacked Mosul, Iraq in June 2014 that the Obama administration had been warned about ISIS’s encroachments in Iraq months earlier. (I wrote about ISIS’s menace to central Iraq, through the Euphrates Corridor, in January 2014. My concern at the time was that ISIS was a different kind of threat, one that emphasized conquering and leveraging territory.)
Yet after the fall of Mosul in 2014, John Kerry had the crust to claim publicly that “people were surprised everywhere” by the ISIS attack and the city’s subsequent fall. This in spite of a Kurdish official’s statement about the ISIS assault on Mosul, and the warning the Kurds had given:

CHAOS IN GERMANY: Migrant sex attacks and fireworks thrown at POLICE during NYE events (express, Jan 3, 2017)

“A CROWD of more than 1,000 men shot fireworks at riot police and women were attacked by migrants as New Year’s Eve celebrations spiralled out of control across Germany, despite heightened security due to terror fears.
In Hamburg, 14 women were the victims of sex attacks, as more than 45,000 people celebrated New Year’s Eve in the city.
Police said the suspected attackers, including migrants, grabbed their victim’s crotches. Ten people have been arrested in connection with the sexual assaults.
Officers said three Syrians, three Iraqis, two Afghans, one Eritrean and one German were arrested in connection with the sexual assaults in Große Freiheit and Beatles Square.

Police launched an investigation after a rocket hit a woman, 30, on the head and a police officer was injured when a firework hit his patrol car.
Eyewitnesses accused three Syrians of being behind the incident, police said investigations are ongoing.
Afghan nationals, aged 19, 21 and 37 were accused of repeatedly groping two 18-year-old girls.
They were later arrested and denied all allegations.
Police said a 31-year-old Iraqi exposed himself to one woman in Ludwigstrasse at around 4am, witnesses have been asked to contact officers.
The mayhem continued into the early hours of New Year’s Day with a knife fight between a Syrian and Iraqi in Ulmerstrasse.
Officers said the Syrian wan was stabbed in the thigh south a pocket knife.
Vandals also set fire to seven cars and used tyres causing €50,000 worth of damage.
In Dortmund five police officers were injured in the chaos which saw police arrest dozens of men.
A gang of around 1,000, which included groups of migrants, crowded in front of Dortmund’s main train station and Leeds Square.
Officers set up no-go zones near the station and town’s main square with reports of drunk men aggressively approaching police.
Photos and video from the mayhem show smoke flares being thrown into the crowd as troublemakers ignored police warnings from the square’s town speakers.
Police said suspects threw pyrotechnics with bare hands at officers and families with young children.
Riot police armed with shields and helmets watched on as gangs shout “Allahu Akbar” as Syrians celebrate Turkey and Russia brokering a ceasefire for Syria.
A homeless man was rushed to hospital with first degree burns after an unknown person threw a rocket at him.
Firefighters were called to car fires as revellers also set fire to bins across the city.
Rockets also set fire to the roof of the Reinoldi Church.
Police said they are unsure if the blaze was caused by the official fireworks display or people throwing them in the crowd.
Police in Cologne said on Sunday they had prevented a repeat of the assaults and robberies suffered by hundreds of women in Cologne a year ago by screening 650 mostly North African men on New Year’s Eve.
Police detained and screened many of the men at the main railway station as they headed towards the centre of Cologne in western Germany, where the attacks a year earlier fuelled criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-door migrant policy.
Cologne police chief Juergen Mathies did not say how many of the men were subsequently allowed into the city centre but denied the the checks amounted to racial profiling. He also said many of those detained had been aggressive.
“This was clearly about preventing similar incidents to last year.
“A large part of this group that was checked was such that criminal acts were to be expected. That is why we took this clear approach.”
Police arrested 92 people – including 16 Germans and 10 Syrians – during Saturday night’s celebrations in Cologne. Police also installed new video surveillance cameras to monitor the station square.
Many of the suspects in the attacks a year ago were of North African and Arab appearance, the police have said.
Those attacks helped fuel the rise of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which hurt Merkel’s conservatives in a series of regional polls last year and threaten to erode her support in this year’s national election.
In her New Year’s address to the nation, Angela Merkel said Islamist terrorism was the biggest test facing Germany, and she vowed to improve security after the Berlin terror attack that killed 12 people before Christmas.
Although the migrant flow into Germany has slowed sharply, Mrs Merkel is under pressure from the AfD and her party’s conservative Bavarian allies to take tougher action after more than one million asylum seekers arrived here in 2015 and 2016.”

Revealed: 1,000-Man Mob Attack Police, Set Germany’s Oldest Church Alight on New Year’s Eve
At New Year’s Eve celebrations in Dortmund a mob of more than 1,000 men chanted ‘Allahu Akhbar’, launched fireworks at police, and set fire to a historic church.
Already by 7 pm a man was hospitalised with first-degree burns to his face and hands after fireworks were hurled at a group of homeless people outside the city’s main train station. More than two dozen people were injured at festivities in Dortmund, some seriously.
The events of the night were described as “quiet” by police in a statement, and as “normal” by a spokesman for the city government.
But at 11:30pm police announced they were adding to their already much larger than usual presence in the city centre for New Year, sending in further reinforcements of officers.
This came after the force reported there being a “large number of young men from North Africa” in town, with federal police officer Volker Stall noting there was an “aggressive mood” towards the public and police.
At midnight, the situation threatened to escalate. A livewire published by the Ruhr Nachrichten reported that a crowd of “at least 1,000 young men” began throwing fireworks into crowds of visitors, which also included families with children. Asked by officers to stop, the mob turned to pelt fireworks at police instead.
Despite the prohibition of lighting pyrotechnics near churches, firemen had to intervene after fireworks were launched at St Reinolds, Germany’s oldest church, setting the roof alight.
Also reported by the Ruhr Nachrichten was that “a group of Syrians sang in celebration of the ceasefire in Syria.” However, a video posted to Twitter by one of the newspaper’s reporters, paired with the caption “Syrians celebrate the truce in their country”, shows a group of men chanting ‘Allahu Akhbar’ around the flag of al-Qaeda and Islamic State collaborators, the ‘Free Syrian Army’………

As the Bavar-373 is made entirely from domestic components, it can be manufactured and deployed even in the face of future sanctions.

This isn’t good news, while I doubt that the air defense system is as good as the article claims the fact that Iran has the capabilities of building the entire system out of raw materials is scary.

During a celebration in Ramallah marking the 52nd anniversary of the founding of his Fatah faction, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas declared that 2017 will be the “year of international recognition of the State of Palestine.” Hailing the recent anti-settlement UN Security Council resolution 2334, Abbas said he was prepared to work with the new administration of Donald Trump “to achieve peace in the region.”
But while Abbas and his lieutenants were celebrating in Ramallah, at least 11 Palestinians were wounded in a scuffle that erupted between rival Fatah factions in the Gaza Strip. According to sources in the Gaza Strip, the fight broke out between Abbas loyalists and supporters of estranged Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan. The confrontation, which was the most violent between the two sides in many years, is yet another sign of increasing schism in Fatah. Moreover, it is an indication of how Abbas’s control over his own faction is slipping through his hands. Hamas policemen who were at the scene did not interfere to break up the fight between the warring Fatah activists.
The melee in Gaza exposes as the lie that is Abbas’s repeated claim of a unified Fatah, able to lead the Palestinians towards statehood. Incredibly, Abbas seeks global recognition of a Palestinian state at a time when the flames in his own backyard are set to engulf him and his questionable regime.
Abbas says he wants to work with the Trump Administration to achieve peace in the Middle East, yet he cannot even achieve peace in his very own faction.
Abbas’s speech coincided with a new public opinion poll that showed that 64% of Palestinians want him to step down. The poll, conducted by the Ramallah-based Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, also showed that two-thirds of Palestinians do not believe that the current Fatah leadership can achieve their aspirations.

“A total of 16 sexual assaults have been reported at New Year’s Eve celebrations across Austria, including 11 incidents in the city of Innsbruck in Tyrol.
Eleven women, from Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Italy, Germany and Switzerland, told police that they were harassed and groped by a group of men in and around Innsbruck’s Marktplatz, where public Silvester celebrations were taking place.
A police spokesman told the ORF broadcaster that the allegations are being investigated, and that police are waiting to view video and mobile phone footage from that night – some of which was filmed by the organisers of the event.
The women all said that they were assaulted by a group of dark-haired men who appeared to be under the age of 30, and that most of them had beards.
Two women who were harassed took photos of two of the men with their mobile phones, however the quality of the photos is not very good as it was already very dark outside. Police said that they questioned all the victims on New Year’s Day, before they returned home.
A police spokesman said it’s likely that it was one group of men who harassed the various women, and that the men “had a system”. They targeted women who had become separated from their friends or a larger group of people, or were dancing by themselves. Most of the assaults happened between 11.30pm and 1.30am in Marktplatz, when the noise and excitement was at a peak.
A further four women have reported that they were sexually assaulted during New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city of Salzburg. A 31-year-old German woman told police that she was harassed by an 18-year-old asylum seeker who appeared to be very drunk and repeatedly tried to kiss her, before grabbing her between the legs.
The woman’s friends managed to push him away and he was later arrested and questioned by police, who said that he appeared to be confused and disorientated. He was examined by a doctor and is being held in police custody.
In Graz, a 26-year-old woman told police that she was sexually harassed and assaulted by two men in the centre of the city early on New Year’s Day. She said that they grabbed her buttocks and crotch but that she managed to run away and called the police. She said that both men appeared to be foreigners and were between 25 and 35 years old.

Turkey and the U.S. are at odds over the designation of the PYD and its military wing, the People’s Protection Unit (YPG). While Turkey sees them as terror organizations due to their ties with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the U.S. designates the PKK as a terror organization but does not regard the PYD and YPG the same, seeing them instead as partners in the fight against ISIL.
On Dec. 29, 2016, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an accused the U.S. of directly supplying the PYD with weapons.
“You sent arms to terror organizations, but then say, ‘We sent ammunition, not arms.” We don’t buy that or accept it. Although we are partners in NATO, you are giving this support to terrorist organizations, not us. Are the terrorist organizations your partner in NATO? If we are strategic partners in NATO, you should stand with us,” Erdo?an said.
The U.S. denies Turkey’s allegations, which was put forth in a statement on Dec. 28, 2016 by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.
“The United States government has not provided weapons or explosives to the YPG or the PKK – period. We repeatedly have condemned PKK terrorist attacks and the group’s reprehensible violence in Turkey,” the statement read.”

A delegation of Republican senators is moving forward with an effort to freeze some funding to the State Department until the U.S. embassy in Israel is formally moved to Jerusalem, according to new legislation.
The legislation comes as the Obama administration continues to face criticism over its behind-the-scenes effort to forward a United Nations resolution condemning Israel.
The Obama administration, like previous administrations, does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city and has worked to stymie efforts to move the U.S. embassy there.

Appeared is used advisedly: Trump was at least in the general vicinity of the bull’s-eye; his opponent wouldn’t even acknowledge the target existed — except in the most grudging of ways, and only because Trump had forced the issue.
The question boiled down to this: Are you willing to name the enemy?
After a quarter-century of willful blindness, it was at least a start. We should note, moreover, that it’s a start we owe to the president-elect. Washington, meaning both parties, had erected such barriers to a rational public discussion of our enemies that breaking through took Trump’s outsized persona, in all its abrasive turns and its excesses.

China Attempting to Separate Catholic Churches from the Pope
As reported by Chinese state news agency Xinhua, top Chinese officials are advocating for a self-governed Chinese Catholic church.
Senior Communist Party leader Yu Zhengsheng (pictured at left) calls for patriotism and the adherence to “socialism with Chinese characteristics,” saying that spiritual leaders should follow “the principles of independence and self-management.”
Yu is a member of the Politburo Standing Committee – a group of seven men that governs China. His suggestion comes as China works to repair relations with the Vatican following the party’s decision to expel Catholic missionaries and place Catholic churches under state supervision – rules that went into effect back in 1949.
