Dog lovers in central Iran are in uproar after authorities began confiscating their pets in an apparent crackdown on the “vulgar Western culture” of canine ownership, Iranian media reported Saturday.
One unnamed dog owner in Shahin Shahr in Isfahan province told Iran’s Shahrvand newspaper that officials had shown up suddenly at his house last week.
“We were shown a piece of paper indicating they were from the municipal veterinary office. They came in and took away our dogs under the pretext of vaccination,” he said.
The owner was told he could recover the dog after its vaccination, but when he went to the vet’s office they had no record of his case.
Instead, the newspaper said the confiscations were the result of a crackdown launched by local prosecutor Mohsen Boosaidi.
“Keeping and caring for dogs is haram (forbidden) according to religious leaders,” Boosaidi told the Fars news agency on June 19.
“If we find out that anyone is keeping and caring for dogs and so is promoting vulgar Western culture, we will deal with them firmly.”
Dog confiscations in the town began three days later, Shahrvand reported. It did not give precise numbers, but said a number of families had lost their pets.
“Ever since our dog was taken away, you only hear the sound of crying and sobbing in our house,” the Shahin Shahr owner said.
Javid Al-e Davood, the head of Iran’s Society For Protection of Animals, said such confiscations were illegal and that the prosecutor was “absolutely wrong” about the Islamic attitude to dogs.
“Keeping dogs has not been regarded as haram in any religious book.
Associating keeping dogs with Western culture is distorting the history of Islamic and Iranian civilization,” he said.
Dogs are considered najes (unclean) in Islam and police often stop and fine dog walkers. However, Iran’s authorities have stated that dogs with a clear role — such as guarding property or guiding the blind — are permitted.
In a wry letter to the prosecutor published on his organization’s website, Al-e Davood said confiscating people’s pets was a strange priority for the authorities.
“We are very happy that all the problems of the country have been resolved and that the presence of a few guard dogs in people’s homes is the last remaining problem for the people of Shahin Shahr, which you have set out to resolve,” he wrote.

Clashes in several areas across Yemen on Friday killed 22 militias and 11 members of pro-government forces, military officials said, after peace talks hit a new barrier.
Fierce battles erupted in the northern Jawf province when Houthi militias attacked loyalists in al-Motoon district, triggering a counter attack by government forces backed by warplanes from the Saudi-led coalition, a military official said.
The fighting left 13 militias dead, while eight loyalists were killed by mistake in an air strike that missed its target, the official added.
Further south, three Houthi militias were killed in clashes in Bayhan, Shabwa province, another military official said.
And in the southwestern flashpoint city of Taez, six militias and three loyalists were killed in renewed fighting when insurgents attacked government troops on the southwestern outskirts of the city, a military official said.

Abbas rejects charges of ‘blood libel’ against Jews

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said on Saturday he opposed “any attack on any religion” after Israel accused him of libelling the Jewish people in an address to the European Parliament.
“Palestine is the cradle of the three monotheistic faiths. We stand strongly against any attack on any religion,” Abbas said in a statement.
In apparently unscripted Arabic remarks to the European Parliament on Thursday, Abbas said that recently “a number of rabbis in Israel made a clear declaration and asked their government to poison water to kill the Palestinians”.
He gave no source for the accusation, but said it was part of wider Israeli campaign of incitement against the Palestinians.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office responded by accusing Abbas of disseminating “a blood libel in front of the European Parliament”.

Austrian far-right figure warns of ‘Auxit’ vote within a year
VIENNA (Reuters) – The European Union should avoid any moves towards political “centralisation” or else Austria could hold a referendum on membership of the bloc within a year, a far-right candidate who almost won the country’s presidential election said.
Norbert Hofer of the anti-immigration Freedom Party narrowly failed to become the European Union’s first far-right head of state in Austria’s presidential run-off last month. His party has, however, challenged that result and a ruling is pending.

“A WOMAN was dragged into a flower bed in a park and raped by two asylum seekers after she asked them to stop shouting, a court in Munich heard today.
The German woman, identified as Marlies G, asked them to keep the noise down while she tried to sleep in the middle of Munich’s Old Botanical Gardens.
Rather than stop, the two men, who had been drinking whiskey cola, sexually assaulted the 56-year-old last August.
The two men are asylum seekers from Eritrea and explained the attack by saying: “We were having a bad day.”
Both men were arrested two months after the attack when the woman raised the alarm following her ordeal. Both have pleaded guilty to carrying out the sex attack.
The pair, identified as 23-year-old Filmon K. and 26-year-old Habtom E. said they were drinking and could not remember much about what happened.
A criminal case against the two was adjourned, however, after the victim suffered panic attacks.
She had to telephone the court to postpone her appearance in which she was expected to give evidence in front of the two men.
In their witness statement they admitted that after she had spoken to them, the 26-year-old had gone over and asked if they could have sex.
Without waiting for an answer, they had then grabbed her and ripped off her clothing.
Filmon told police: “I told my friend that you can go first, and he told me no, you go first, and I’ll go later.”
They said the woman screamed and unsuccessfully tried to fight them off. She was first raped by Filmon and later by Habtom in the daylight sex attack.
They had then run off. Police raised the alarm and managed to arrest the pair in October.
Asked why they had done it, Filmon said: “You know how it is, we were having a bad day.”
The judge then replied sarcastically: “It was not only a bad day for you.””

GERMANY – Abuse hurled at German President Gauck during Saxony visit
Leipzig, Germany (dpa) – German President Joachim Gauck was met with verbal abuse and rude gestures on Sunday during a visit to the eastern state of Saxony, while eye-witnesses also reported clashes between his supporters and opponents.
Gauck was greeted by a crowd shouting “get lost” and “traitor” as he arrived in the 8,700-strong town of Sebnitz to celebrate the 116th German Hiking Day in so-called Saxon Switzerland, known for its stunning scenery.
The state of Saxony has become notorious for right-wing extremism in recent months and is also home to the controversial Dresden-based movement Pegida, or Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West.
Protestors in Sebnitz gave Gauck the finger and held up banners saying “the plebs greet Gauck.”
It is not the first time the German president received a less-than-friendly welcome in the region. In March Gauck was sworn and shouted at by protesters in the Saxon town of Bautzen.
During Gauck‘s visit on Sunday, there also was some physical violence, with one bystander having to be treated in hospital after being tear-gassed.
Dresden police who had to shield Gauck from the crowd declined to comment on any violence, saying it was a normal operation.
A spokeswoman for Gauck meanwhile confirmed that serious verbal abuse had been directed against the president. “That was not nice,” she said, adding that the president had acknowledged the protesters, while continuing to shake the hands of more polite people.

As dawn broke over a shocked Brussels, a group of European MEPs warned that last night’s astonishing Brexit vote will cause the EU to ‘crumble to pieces’ within the next five years.
Their statement came as Britain voted to leave the EU, contrary to all projections by pollsters, to the bewilderment of the Eurocrats in Brussels.
‘This is the beginning of the end for the EU,’ Peter Lundgren, an MEP from the far-Right Sweden Democrat party, told MailOnline. ‘So many other countries will follow the UK. Europe will fall.’
The Eurosceptic MEPs from Sweden, Germany, Italy and France said a number of governments will now be under intense pressure to hold referendums of their own, and try to renegotiate their own individual deals.
This, they said, will lead to a ‘domino effect’ in the wake of Britain’s trailblazing and unprecedented decision to leave the EU.
‘The EU cannot survive. It is too undemocratic, corruption is too high, the Eurocrats’ ambition is too much, there is too much money in the gravy train. ‘It makes ordinary people raving mad.
‘It’s just a matter of time,’ Lundgren said. ‘Britain has set a precedent. Other member states will follow and the whole thing will fall apart. It will happen very soon.’
Overnight, as it became apparent that Britain was turning against the EU establishment, Brussels Eurocrats gradually left the bars around the parliament building and went home to bed.
Several British apparatchiks were concerned about their livelihood, with one telling MailOnline that he was expecting ‘to be on the scrapheap in the morning’.
The Commission and European Parliament buildings remained deserted, but a number of lights burned on the upper floors as a small number of desperate bureaucrats tried to lay the groundwork for a response to the most momentous event in the Union’s history.

More than 100 Islamic State (IS) fighters in Afghanistan were reported killed over the weekend after security forces launched a counterattack against the group in a province near the border with Pakistan.
The militants attacked a town in the Kowt district of eastern Nangarhar province earlier this week, torching homes and local police posts. Multiple civilians, including children, were reported killed, and at least 30 people were abducted.
The Afghan government responded by deploying special forces backed by airstrikes to the area. Local officials and the Afghan interior ministry are reporting that as many as 100 IS fighters were either killed or injured during the counter-operation.

A junior minister was among 11 people killed in an attack by Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab militants on a hotel in the Somali capital, the foreign ministry said Sunday.

TURKEY – Erdogan calls for removal of ‘Trump’ from tower in Istanbul
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the removal of the word “Trump” from the Trump Towers building in Istanbul over the anti-Islam rhetoric usually used by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
“[Trump] has no tolerance for Muslims living in the US. And on top of that they used a brand in [Istanbul] with his name. The ones who put that brand on their building should immediately remove it,” said Erdogan during a speech at the Industrialists and Businessmen Association, RT reported on Saturday.
The building was built by Turkish billionaire Aydin Dogan who pays Trump for using of his name.
Following Trump’s calls to ban Muslims’ entry to the US, Dogan’s company announced that it is “evaluating its legal ties with the brand name.”
“We regret and condemn Trump’s discriminatory remarks. Such statements bear no value and are products of a mind that does not understand Islam, a peace religion, at all,” said Trump Shopping Mall Manager Bulent Kural in December.
Erdogan, who was present at the Trump Towers opening in 2012, also said that he had made a mistake in giving permission of such an endeavor.
At the time he had complained that “We have so many beautiful Turkish-language equivalents for foreign words such as ‘towers’, ‘mall’, ‘food court’.”
Trump has on several occasions spoken against Muslims; including a call for a “complete” ban on Muslim immigrants entering the county. Apart from Muslims, Trump is also unpopular among Hispanics, African Americans, and women.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shared a Ramadan dinner with Turkey’s best-known transgender celebrity hours after the Istanbul riot police broke up an LGBT rally, pictures distributed by his office on Monday showed.
The conservative president and his headscarf-clad wife on Sunday shared their traditional iftar meal at the end of the Muslim fasting day with a group of artists including Turkish trans celebrity and actress Bulent Ersoy.
Photos distributed by Erdogan’s office show the couple sharing a meal with “The Diva,” as Ersoy is known in Turkey, at the official presidential residence in the Istanbul suburb of Tarabya.
Ersoy, 64, underwent sex reassignment surgery in London in the 1980s. She became a celebrity but also faced verbal and even physical attacks at home.
Earlier on Sunday, Istanbul riot police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to prevent a “Trans Pride” event taking place during Ramadan.
Several hundred riot police surrounded the main Taksim Square — where demonstrations have been banned since major anti-government protests in 2013 — to stop the protest from taking place.
The demonstrators unfurled a rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community, and then tried to read a statement but were prevented from doing so by the police.
Istanbul authorities said on Friday they had banned the annual gay pride parade set for June 26 to “safeguard security and public order” after a string of bombings around Turkey over the past year, some of them blamed on the Islamic State group, others claimed by Kurdish militants.
Critics have accused Erdogan of leading a creeping Islamization in Turkey since he came to power as premier in 2003, undermining the secular foundations of the modern republic.
He has repeatedly annoyed activists with his comments on sex and family planning, but has generally steered clear of publicly commenting on gay issues.

Myanmar: Tensions high after Buddhist mob attacks village mosque
Police reinforcements have been called in to help guard a village in central Myanmar where religious tensions are running high after a Buddhist mob destroyed a mosque.
Authorities said an angry mob of around 200 Buddhists rampaged through a Muslim area of a village in Bago province following an argument between neighbours over the building of a Muslim school.
It is the latest flare-up of anti-Muslim violence in Myanmar, which has seen sporadic bouts of religious bloodshed since 2012, with a surge of Buddhist nationalism presenting a key challenge for Aung San Suu Kyi’s new government.
Own Lwin, the local police chief, said the atmosphere remained tense with around 100 police officers deployed to keep the peace.
He said there had been rumours that there might be more unrest, adding that no arrests have been made over the destruction of the mosque.
Win Shwe, the mosque’s secretary, said Muslim residents feared for their safety and were planning to move to a nearby town until the tension cools.
“Our situation is not safe and now we are planning to leave the village … We still feel afraid,” he said.
Strident anti-Muslim sentiment has fomented across Myanmar in recent years, with outbreaks of violence threatening to unravel democratic gains since the former junta stepped down in 2011.
The worst religious violence struck central Myanmar and western Rakhine State, which is home to the stateless Rohingya Muslim minority, tens of thousands of whom still languish in displacement camps after rioting.
Hardline monks and Buddhist nationalists fiercely oppose moves to recognise the Rohingya as an official minority and insist on calling them “Bengalis” — shorthand for illegal migrants from the border with Bangladesh.
Ms Suu Kyi, a vocal champion for human rights, has been criticised for not taking a stronger stance on the Rohingya or the abuse they face.
This month the UN warned violations against the group could amount to “crimes against humanity”.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, now leading Myanmar’s first civilian government in decades, asked for “space” while her administration sought to build trust between religious communities.
