  1. Battle for Mosul: Operation to retake Iraqi city from IS begins (BBC, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37674693

“An Iraqi operation to recapture the city of Mosul, the last stronghold of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in the country, has started.

Artillery began firing on the city early on Monday, in a long-awaited assault from Kurdish Peshmerga, Iraqi government and allied forces.

Tanks are now moving towards the city, which has been held by IS since 2014.

The UN has expressed “extreme concern” for the safety of up to 1.5 million people in the area.

The BBC’s Orla Guerin, who is with Kurdish forces east of Mosul, says tanks are advancing on the city, kicking up clouds of dust.

As the operation began, one Kurdish general said: “If I am killed today I will die happy because I have done something for my people.”…”

  2. Hard-Liners in Iran Release Video Showing Detained American (abcnews, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/hard-liners-iran-release-video-showing-detained-american-42852172

“Hard-liners in Iran have released a video showing a detained Iranian-American businessman for the first time since his arrest in October.

The minute-long video, posted Monday by Iran’s judiciary news agency, shows Siamak Namazi amid a montage of clips, including an Iranian drone flying over a U.S. aircraft carrier and American sailors on their knees being detained in January.

The video has no audio other than what sounds like a dramatic film score. It shows Namazi’s U.S. passport, a United Arab Emirates ID card and a clip of him in a conference room, his arms raised at his sides.

Namazi is a son of Baquer Namazi, a former UNICEF representative who once served as governor of Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan province under the U.S.-backed shah.

Both are now held in Iran.”

  3. US, UK Say Support Is Weak for Military Action Against Syria (abcnews, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/us-uk-support-weak-military-action-syria-42851963

“The United States and Britain are acknowledging the Western world’s weak support for any military action against Syria’s government as they seek ways to pressure President Bashar Assad and his chief backer, Russia, to halt a deadly offensive in Aleppo. They are trying to present it as a possibility, nevertheless.

After a meeting of 11 governments opposing Assad’s rule, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson each insisted Sunday that all options were on the table. But their stark explanations about the danger of resorting to military force appeared to rule out such a move.

The result was a somewhat schizophrenic threat that was unlikely to scare Assad’s government or Russia as they move to crush the last rebel-held areas of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

“When a great power is involved in a fight like this, as Russia has chosen to be by going there and then putting its missiles in place in order to threaten people against military action, it raises the stakes of confrontation,” Kerry said after the meeting in London.

He said no one should be “lighting a fire” under a larger sectarian war in the Middle East or one drawing in superpowers against one another.

Johnson said Britain wanted to “ratchet up” pressure on Assad, Russia and Iran.

“No option is, in principle, off the table,” he told reporters.

Quickly expanding his answer, Johnson: “Be in no doubt that these so-called military options are extremely difficult and there is, to put it mildly, a lack of political appetite in most European capitals and certainly in the West for that kind of solution at present.”

“So we’ve got to work with the tools we have,” he said. “The tools we have are diplomatic.”

The gathering in London came amid mounting international frustration with the 5½ year conflict, which has killed as many as a half-million people, sparked Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II and enabled Islamic State militants to emerge as a global terror threat…”

  4. Is Julian Assange DEAD? Internet in meltdown as WikiLeaks posts series of ‘cryptic’ tweets (express, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/721925/Julian-Assange-WikiLeaks-founder-fear-dead-cryptic-tweets

“WIKILEAKS provoked a storm of speculation over the circumstances of its leader Julian Assange today after posting a series of cryptic tweets.

Social media went into meltdown over the bizarre messages, consisting of a string of numbers, which user speculated may be a “dead man’s switch”.

Prominent figures who fear for their lives, such as Mr Assange, have been known to programme their communication channels to send out seemingly incomprehensible messages upon their deaths which make sense to only a select few followers.

Today WikiLeaks’ official account posted three tweets – one about US Secretary of State John Kerry, one about Ecuador and one about the UK Foreign Office, each followed by a series of numbers and letters.

After the mysterious messages were posted, the whistleblowing website added: “Julian Assange’s internet link has been intentionally severed by a state party. We have activated the appropriate contingency plans.”

The revelations provoked a maelstrom of speculation about the health and potential state of the WikiLeaks founder, who is hiding out in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Mr Assange has been cooped up in the building for more than three years as he seeks to avoid extradition to Sweden on sex assault allegations. He fears that, from there, he could be extradited to the US to face charges over WikiLeaks’ activities.

In response to today’s speculation US entrepreneur Bruce Porter Jr tweeted: “Appears those codes were indeed Assange’s ‘dead man’s switch’.

“Word is he alive but internet has been cut.#Wikileaks”

Political commentator Roger Stone ?said: “Reports the Brits storm the Ecuadorian Embassy tonite while Kerry demands the UK revoke their diplomatic status so Assange can be seized.”

To which one user, called Deena, replied: “I think Assange has already activated the Dead Man’s Switch! There is NO stopping wikileaks now. All info will be available.”

However, the hacking group Anonymous ?denied that the world’s most famous fugitive is dead, insisting he was merely trying to publicise upcoming releases about Mr Kerry, Ecuador and the Foreign Office…”

  6. There are way too many coincidences in assaults on Trump

A few things you’re unlikely to read elsewhere: Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy – and Americans’ ability to choose their next leader – is being destroyed by a sequence of events way too well orchestrated to be coincidental.

This is not about the billionaire’s qualifications or disqualifications to move into the Oval Office, his braggadocio, his awful manners, alleged sexual harassment, crass behavior, ostentatious wealth.
    Political columnist Andrew Malcolm

Americans have had unsavory political leaders before, most recently Hillary Clinton’s charming unfaithful hubby who, among other things, received oral sex from an intern in that same revered office. And then lied about it to authorities.

If you want media to chase anything, tell them they can’t have it. It’s like catnip; they can’t help themselves.

This is about Americans being politically manipulated quite cleverly, something people do not appreciate, if they’re allowed to be aware of it. Recent events could be a movie called “Wag the Dog – Again.”

  7. EXCLUSIVE: CAUGHT ON TAPE — Bill Clinton on Being an ‘Equal Opportunity F*cker’: ‘I’ve Got Good Taste’

NEW YORK — Speaking during a recorded phone conversation with his alleged mistress Gennifer Flowers in December 1991, Bill Clinton stated of rumors that he had had an affair with an unnamed woman: “She was so good looking I wished it was true.”

That conversation took place two months after he announced his bid for the presidency.

In another recorded conversation from one year earlier, Clinton reacted to a list of five women with whom he was accused of having had sexual relations by joking, “I’ve got good taste.” In the conversation, he denied that he slept with the women on the list.

Clinton was specifically reacting to Flowers recalling her response after she learned about the list of women. “You know what I said? I said, ‘At least he’s an equal op…opportunity f*cker!’” stated Flowers in the recording.

In an interview airing Sunday with Breitbart News and this reporter’s weekend talk radio program, Aaron Klein Investigative Radio, Flowers reacted to those two sections of the tapes, explaining she felt that Clinton was acting like a “jackass” and was being demeaning to women.

  8. Assange’s internet link intentionally severed by state party – WikiLeaks

he internet is one of the few, if not only, available ways for Julian Assange, who has been locked up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for more than four years, to maintain contact with the outside world.

READ MORE: WikiLeaks cancels Assange’s live balcony appearance over ‘security concerns’

Facing extradition to Sweden over allegations of rape, which he denies, the Australian computer programmer has been holed up in the embassy in West London since 2012.

He claims the extradition is actually a bid to move him to a jurisdiction from which he can then be sent to the US, which is known to be actively investigating WikiLeaks.

The unverified claims of state sabotage come as WikiLeaks continues to release damaging documents, most recently thousands of hacked emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta.

Earlier this month, Assange claimed his organization would aim to publish documents “every week” in the run up to US Election Day on November 8.

Clinton’s campaign has made unsubstantiated claims that WikiLeaks is working with the Russian government to help defeat the Democrat in favor of Trump.

Last week the FBI reissued a statement saying it was working to “determine the accuracy, nature and scope” of cyber intrusions, but did not name any suspected perpetrators.

  9. CNN’s Stelter Blames Firebombing of NC Republican Office on Trump’s ‘Over Heated’ Rhetoric

    http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/nicholas-fondacaro/2016/10/16/cnns-stelter-blames-firebombing-nc-republican-office-trumps

Horrible news broke Sunday afternoon as details emerged of the vicious firebombing of the Orange County GOP Head Quarters in North Carolina. Nobody was killed in the attack, which is being described as a “political terrorism,” although the office itself was lost. According to authorities “Nazi Republicans get out of town or else” was spray-painted on a building close to the attack, but that didn’t stop CNN’s Brian Stelter from concluding Donald Trump’s “over heated the rhetoric” was what caused the attack.

During a segment on CNN’s Newsroom, the panel Stelter was on was discussing the recent series of death threats being received by an Arizona newspaper. “So the Arizona Republic getting so many death threats over an endorsement is an example of how over heated the rhetoric is,” Stelter then pivoted, “Another example out of North Carolina today, the firebombing of a local GOP office.”

Richard: Once again the left and one of its mouthpieces (CNN) prove that they will lie about anything, blaming Trump because Republican headquarters is firebombed is typical of the Dems. Just as having the dead voting is typical of the Dems.)

Drones will be deliberately smashed into passenger jets as part of a radical testing programme triggered by fears of a catastrophe in British skies.

Ministers ordered the tests after a series of near misses, some near major airports.

They have committed more than £250,000 to pay for a private study of what would happen if a drone struck a window or the fuselage of a plane.

  11. UK cannot revoke EU divorce process once triggered: Attorney General

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain cannot reverse the decision to leave the European Union once the formal divorce process has begun with the triggering of Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, Attorney General Jeremy Wright told the High Court on Monday.

“We do not argue that an Article 50 notice can be revoked and we would like the court to proceed on the basis a notification is irrevocable,” said Wright, the government’s top lawyer.

Asked from the bench if that meant there was no such thing as giving conditional notice, Wright said: “We accept that.”

He was speaking at a hearing on a legal bid to force the government to seek parliamentary approval before formally starting the Brexit process.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said she will trigger Article 50 by the end of March next year and that there will be no parliamentary vote beforehand.

The legal challenge questions whether the government can use a historical power known as the royal prerogative, to decide when, how and whether to make this decision.

The case comes amid wider calls for lawmakers to have a vote over the shape of Brexit negotiations, with many politicians arguing the June 23 referendum only revealed that Britons wanted to leave the bloc but not how.

  12. Another missile attack on U.S. warships, as this weirdest of wars gropes for the next gear

The place to start in bringing you this update is with a report from early September. The gist of the report is that Houthi rebels and Iraqi “militias” – that is, the Iraqi Shias trained and supported by Iran – agreed to train together in Yemen.

The linking entity between the two groups is, of course, the Iranian Qods Force.

This doesn’t necessarily mean anything specific about who literally manned the Iran-supplied cruise missile systems that were used to attack the UAE-leased HSV-2 Swift on 1 October, and make attempts against U.S. warships on 9, 12, and now 15 October. That’s not the point.

The point is that Iran is fighting regionally, with an interlinked regional strategy, and not just in little boresighted tactical pockets here and there.

As it might be put in military jargon, Iran is “fighting the whole theater.” That means Iran is developing the entire area as a battle space, viewing it in terms of territorial, logistic, and weapons-defined dimensions, and not just political or ideological ones. This, in turn, is as good a reason as any to get our heads around the reality that this is a real war, and it’s already started.

    http://libertyunyielding.com/2016/10/16/another-missile-attack-u-s-warships-weirdest-wars-gropes-next-gear/

    • This one is one of her best, it spells out the disorder and lack of a coordinated policy in the Middle East and how the many fights going on over there are all part of the same war. Iran, Saudi and others are fighting this as one big theater of operation while we in the west are looking on each fight as a separate war. As she points out that this has caused us to back into a war that we really don’t want and have no clear goal for what we are doing.

The left is real good at getting us into wars with no clear goal and then limiting how we fight them.

  13. Russia Today bank accounts frozen in the UK, editor-in-chief says – BBC

RT: NatWest ‘freezes Russian channel’s UK bank accounts’

NatWest bank has frozen the accounts of Russia’s state-run broadcaster RT, its editor-in-chief says.

Margarita Simonyan tweeted: “They’ve closed our accounts in Britain. All our accounts. ‘The decision is not subject to review.’ Praise be to freedom of speech!”

RT says the bank gave no explanation for its decision.

It said the entire Royal Bank of Scotland Group, of which NatWest is part, was refusing to service RT.

The broadcaster, previously known as Russia Today, says NatWest wrote to its London office saying: “We have recently undertaken a review of your banking arrangements with us and reached the conclusion that we will no longer provide these facilities.”

The bank said its decision was final and it is “not prepared to enter into any discussion.”

  16. GERMANY – One dead, six missing after huge explosions hit TWO chemical factories

MASSIVE explosions ripped through plants belonging to the world’s largest chemicals producer this morning, leaving at least one person dead.

A huge blaze first broke out during pipeline work at the BASF factory in the German town of Lampertheim at just after 11.30am local time this morning.

Plumes of smoke could be seen in the sky above the premises of the German company – which makes chemicals, plastics, coatings and works in natural gas exploration and production.

It has now been confirmed that one worker has been killed and another six seriously injured.

The blast sparked another large fire and as well as several injured people, a number of workers are still reportedly missing.

This followed an explosion at BASF’s facility in the city of Ludwigshafen – 50 miles north of Frankfurt.

BASF has now closed a number of production facilities, including two steamcrackers which are used to make basic chemical components.

The chemicals giant has warned local residents to keep their windows and doors shut.

The complex covers an area of four square miles and employs 39,000 workers.

BASF has downplayed the seriousness of the situation, saying the fire will not damage the enviornment.

A spokesman said: “The environmental measurement vehicles of the BASF are running back and forth outside the facility.”

It added there is no evidence of contamination at this stage.

German newspaper Die Welt said there have been 13 “incidents” at BASF facilities this year.

The global company currently employs 122,000 people worldwide, with more than 52,800 in Germany alone.

Last year, it posted revenues in excess of €70 billion (£63 billion).

  18. ‘The Euro is FINISHED’ Currency’s creator says it will soon COLLAPSE and destroy the EU (express, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/721930/Euro-European-Union-collapse-single-currency-Otmar-Issing

“THE Euro is a ticking time bomb which will soon blow up and wipe out the whole EU project in its wake, the currency’s creator has said in an extraordinary warning today.

In an explosive intervention professor Otmar Issing predicted that Brussels’ dream of a European superstate will finally be buried amongst the rubble of the crumbling single currency he designed.

The respected economist launched a withering attack on eurocrats and German leader Angela Merkel, accusing them of betraying the principles of the euro and demonstrating scandalous incompetence over its management.

And he savaged the whole idea of a United States of Europe, saying the attempt to push through federalisation by the back door had churned the ground the currency was built on into a quagmire of patchwork legislation, into which it is fast sinking.

Prof Issing’s extraordinarily brutal attack should act as a sharp wake-up call to European leaders who have pledged to accelerate the process of ever-closer integration after Britain leaves the bloc.

And it will put the world on alert of an impending economic catastrophe, with the predicted collapse of the Euro likely to spark a cataclysmic chain of events for financial institutions across the globe.

The leading economist was especially scathing of the European Central Bank (ECB), of which he was the first chief, accusing it of being too quick to dish out cash to failing banks and countries.

And he was equally ferocious in his assessment of Jean-Claude Juncker’s beleaguered EU Commission, which he accused of betraying the Euro on the altar of its superstate dream.

Prof Issing blasted: “One day, the house of cards will collapse. Realistically, it will be a case of muddling through, struggling from one crisis to the next.

“It is difficult to forecast how long this will continue for, but it cannot go on endlessly.”

In an extraordinarily candid outburst he rounded on Europe’s leaders, saying their incompetence had created an “overwhelming moral hazard” which could bring generations of misery to hundreds of millions of ordinary Europeans.

He blasted the Commission and the ECB for failing to enforce strict rules on bailouts designed to protect the euro, saying they had become too riven with political backslapping.

Describing the Euro project as being on a “slippery slope”, Prof Issing said it was only the combination of cheap oil, a cheap euro, quantitative easing and less fiscal austerity that had disguised its huge fundamental weakenesses.

And he predicted that the currency is so troubled that it will not survive the next global financial downturn, no matter how much political will there is to save it….”

  19. US Army Field Commander Shot Dead in Northern Syria (farsnews, Oct 17, 2016)

“”The commander of the US Special Forces in Tal Abyadh was shot in the head and killed by unknown assailants,” the Arabic-language Sham Times said.

The Arab media outlet said the death of the unnamed commander is leading to chaos among the US-backed Kurdish forces.

“The Command Center of the US military forces in Northern Raqqa and the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have launched joint probe into the incident,” they added.

Kurdish sources said Saturday that the US Army has deployed nearly 300 fresh forces in Northern Raqqa near the border with Turkey.

“120 US army soldiers have been deployed in North of Tal Abyadh. Also 60 other soldiers have been dispatched to a base near the village of Shabadeq close to a road towards the town of Salouk,” the sources said.

“The Shabadeq base is a camp to train the Kurdish fighters for war against the ISIL terrorists in the Eastern battlefields of Raqqa up to the Northern banks of the Euphrates River,” the sources added.

“In the meantime, over 100 US soldiers have entered Ein Issa via an illegally-established US army base in the village of Kharab Isq to coordinate Kurdish fighters’ operations and meanwhile guard the US political officials who have been dispatched to Syria to form a new coalition, allegedly for the capture of Raqqa,” the sources said.”

“CALAIS migrants in the Jungle attacked investigative reporters and robbed them of their camera in a “violent and dangerous” brawl before they made their bid for Britain.

The knife-wielding mob launched a vicious assault with stones, knives and sticks before they attempted to sneak onto lorries bound for the UK, according to the investigative reporters.

During the attack, which took place at a petrol station near the notorious Jungle camp in Calais at around 10.30pm, the reporters were left “cut, bruised and without one of their cameras”.

Mark Stone, who reports for Sky News, said: “We had been welcomed earlier by the migrants, we felt no threat.

“We spotted them and filmed briefly, but then two dozen turned up. Rocks were thrown followed by a sustained attack with knives and sticks until we reached our car – cut, bruised and without one of our cameras.

“A RIOT police officer was badly wounded during a violent brawl between the police and hundreds of UK-bound Calais migrants.

According to a French official an ambush took place between 9pm and 11pm on Saturday, after more than 300 immigrants from the soon-to-be razed ‘Jungle’ refugee camp stormed towards the port in an attempt to cause traffic chaos and block off access to the A16 motorway.

For months now, thousands of violent migrants have been running amok on the motorway outside the port of Calais in a bid to break into moving vehicles headed towards the UK…”

  24. Rotherham sex abuse scandal: EIGHT men found GUILTY of sexually abusing three girls (express, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/722071/eight-men-guilty-child-sex-abuse-Rotherham

“A ROTHERHAM child abuse investigation has seen eight men found guilty of sexually abusing three girls.

The eight men were found guilty of offences that took place between 1999 and 2003.

Sageer Hussain, Mohammed Whied, Ishtiaq Khaliq, Waleed Ali, Asif Ali, Masoued Malik, Basharat Hussain and Naeem Rafiq will be sentenced on November 4.

The month-long trial at Sheffield Crown Court heard how the men “sexualised” their victims and, in some instances, subjected them to acts of a “degrading and violent nature”.

One girl and her family told police, their MP and the then home secretary David Blunkett about the abuse and eventually moved to Spain to get away from the men…”

  25. ‘It’s not MY fault’ Norway minister savages criticism against migrant detention centre (express, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/722030/Norway-minister-savages-criticism-migrant-detention-centre

“NORWAY’S Immigration Minister has lashed out against critics accusing her of failing migrant families by placing them in a closed detention centre.

Sylvi Listhaug argued it was the asylum-seeker’s own actions that had landed them at Trandum, in Oslo, by either being a flight risk if their application was denied or for withholding information from the authorities.

The Immigration Minister said the closed detention centre was in place to secure that Norway had a strict, but fair asylum policy.

Lashing back at the criticism of the centre which has been referred to “as worse than jail”, Ms Listhaug said: “The whole point of placing families and others with denied asylum at Trandum is so they don’t disappear.

“Trandum is an important tool to maintain a strict, but fair immigration policy.”

Defending the decision to keep migrant families in the closed centre, the right-wing politician added that she did not cause their predicament.

Ms Listhaug said: “I did not cause the families’ situation. It is their own responsibility.

“There is even a support apparatus which helps migrants who have had their asylum applicants denied to get money for a voluntary return. Despite this, some chose to not adhere to this and so they are forcibly deported.”

The Immigration Minister’s call for migrants themselves to take responsibility for their futures comes after criticism from the Christian Democratic Party (CDP).

CDP called for families to be granted their own accommodation after it was uncovered that earlier this year a family, including a two-year-old toddler, had been incarcerated at the Trandum centre for 23 days.

The incident has been reported to the European Court of Human Rights.

Police in the Nordic country have been granted £10million to deport 1,800 illegal migrants by the end of 2017.

In September Ms Listhaug said that a vast sum of the annual budget would be used to return asylum-seekers who have had their claim denied.

Last year, the Police Immigration Service (PIS) expelled 7,825 migrants from the Scandinavian country.”

“DENMARK’S borders will remain CLOSED until the European Union can reestablish control over the migrant crisis and make the continent safe again, a minister has declared.

Immigration and integration minister, Inger Støjberg, has announced she is set to tell the EU that Denmark will continue the internal border checks, despite being a member of the Schengen Zone.

The Schengen Agreement, which was signed in 1985, was created to allow citizens of member countries to travel freely without passport checks to other nations within the area.

However, as the unprecedented influx of migrants has placed an enormous strain on the public services in the EU and EEA countries, several of the members have implemented internal border controls…”

  27. ‘Make Muslims of them ALL’ Radicals call for ‘Islamification’ outside Swedish Parliament (express, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/722074/muslim-Islamification-Swedish-Parliament-radicals-video

“RADICAL Muslims have called for the Islamification of westerners in a demonstration outside of the Swedish Parliament.

In a shocking clip, filmed by politician Hanif Bali outside his workplace, a huge crowd can be seen chanting and praising Imam Khomeini, who enforced Sharia Law in Iran.

Posting the footage on Facebook, Bali wrote: “Today there was quite a lot of noise outside parliament – prayers were proclaimed and people chanted.

“When I first looked outside, I thought I was seeing scenes from streets of Tehran.”

The demonstration, which took place on Wednesday, was instigated by Imam Ali Islamic Center, a Shia Muslim Mosque which has had known ties to hate preachers calling for the murder of homosexuals.

After seeing the demonstration outside the Parliament building, Bali went outside and within moments he said he heard people hailing Imam Khomeini.

Khomeini was a key figure in the Islamic revolution, which was the country transform from a fairly secular Muslim state to a strict implementor of Sharia Law.

The Swedish politician also claimed many of those gathered in the square between the Royal Palace and the Parliament House were unaccompanied refugees from Afghanistan.

Bali said one of them called for the Islamification of westerners.

The minor reported chanted: “May Allah increase our numbers. We must do the Muslims of them all!”

Bali added: “What is tragic is that there was not a single journalist in place to report on the immense power demonstration of the loyal Islamic fifth columnist outside the Swedish parliament.””

  28. CANADA – Another ‘unacceptable’ anti-Islam flyer shocks Edmonton resident

For the second time in two weeks, an anti-Muslim flyer has shown up in the city. Police are already investigating a similar incident in the south end. And as Shallima Maharaj explains, this time it has popped up in the north end.

An Edmonton resident discovered an anti-Islam flyer in her mailbox Saturday, prompting a call to the police hate crimes unit.

Alannah Davies said the flyer was delivered to her home in the Calder neighbourhood in the city’s northwest and believes other people may have received it too.

“This is Canada. This is where people flee to get away from conflict and racism so it shouldn’t be happening here. We’re a mosaic and a diverse place,” she said.

The words: “I hate gays, thinks Islam” are written in large, bold print at the top of the paper. It includes an image of two men, blindfolded with ropes around their necks.

The paper goes on to read: “The Qur’an: ‘Kill the one that is doing it and also kill the one that it is being done to.’ In reference to the active and passive partners in gay sexual intercourse. Is this advocating peace, love and freedom in your eyes? It’s time to #ShipThemTheF***Back.”

There is a website listed at the bottom of the flyer but it’s not known at this time if the group is responsible for making and distributing them. Global News reached out to the group but had not received a reply Sunday.

“The people who are distributing these need to know that they’re being counter-productive,” Davies said, adding whoever created and spread the flyers made her very angry.

She reported the flyer to the Edmonton Police Service’s Hate Crimes Unit.

Faisal Khan Suri, president of the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council (AMPAC), also called on police to investigate the flyer.

Global News contacted the Edmonton Police Service but did not hear back on Sunday.

“The AMPAC emphatically condemns the hate flyers being distributed in Edmonton for the second time,” Khan Suri’s statement reads.

“The flyers are hate propaganda with fabricated assertions about Islam and Muslims. Islam does not condone the killing of any innocent life. We are urging the EPS to investigate these acts as hate crimes and bring those responsible to justice immediately. We will be working with the EPS to closely monitor the situation. Islamophobia is not just a Muslim issue – it’s an Alberta issue and a Canadian issue. We will continue to work with all peace-loving Canadians of every stripe to eradicate such hatred and intolerance.”

The city councillor for the area said the message does not represent Edmonton.

“I really appreciate the person that called and said ‘this is being distributed’ because it’s someone standing up and saying ‘this isn’t acceptable.’ And it’s not, not in our Edmonton,” Bev Esslinger said.

“To target peoples’ beliefs … telling them they have to go back – many of them are born and raised here – that is ridiculous,” Esslinger added. “This is an Edmonton for everyone.”

Less than two weeks ago, another anti-Islam flyer was circulated in the Richfield neighbourhood. It had the words #BANISLAM at the bottom and referred to the religion as a “delusional seventh-century cult.”

The incident also follows the discovery of an anti-Sikh poster at the University of Alberta last month and an anti-Muslim poster at the University of Calgary.

“It is unfortunate and it’s getting exhausting,” said Jesse Lipscombe, whose experience with racism in Edmonton sparked the #MakeItAwkward campaign.

“I know it’s exhausting for a very many people,” he said. “Not just people from the Muslim faith or Islam faith or Sikh faith or black or gay, but people in general who have good hearts and understand what we are supposed to be as a country, are getting exhausted seeing this type of thing happening over and over and over.”

“Fear wins when there’s an absence of education. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, and you’re full of fear, you have to justify it somehow and sometimes they do it with posters like this.”

The Sikh Students’ Association responded to the racist posters found at the U of A with an event promoting education and awareness.

The group, along with the University of Alberta Students’ Union and the World Sikh Organization, hosted Turban Eh! on campus. Volunteers tied turbans on Edmontonians and answered questions about the significance of the turban and what it means for Sikhs.

  29. Iranian hard-liners release video showing detained American

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Hard-liners in Iran have released a video showing a detained Iranian-American businessman for the first time since his arrest last October.

Both are now held in Iran.

  30. Russians Funding Anti-Fracking Groups in America – Hillary Knew All Along

For months, rumors have been circulating that Putin’s Russia is secretly backing anti-fracking groups in the US. Thanks to WikiLeaks, we now have proof:

Hillary Clinton talked about Russian-backed environmental groups during a private speech on June 18th, 2014. This is what she said:

“We were up against Russia pushing oligarchs and others to buy media. We were even up against phony environmental groups, and I’m a big environmentalist, but these were funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, oh that pipeline, that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you, and a lot of the money supporting that message was coming from Russia.”

As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, a “shadowy Bermudan company” has donated “tens of millions of dollars to anti-fracking environmentalist groups in the United States.”

A January report by the EPA specifically implicates Klein ltd – a company that is believed to be “run by executives with deep ties to Russian oil interests and offshore money laundering schemes involving members of President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.”

Fracking is a violent drilling procedure that allows companies to access hard-to-reach resources of gas and oil. It is controversial because it requires vast amounts of water and can contaminate groundwater at the drilling site.

  31. ISTEN: Hillary Freak Out… Makes Vile Move When She Finds Bible in Limo [EXCLUSIVE]

Gary Byrne is a former Secret Service officer who served in the West Wing during the Clinton administration, and of course observed some intriguing phenomena there.

On Conservative Tribune sister company USA Radio’s “Trending Today USA,” Byrne recounted a story of Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton assaulting another Secret Service member with a copy of the Bible.

Host Rusty Humphries asked him flat-out in an exclusive interview: Has Clinton been rude?

  32. FBI documents: Former agent complained Hillary Clinton flouted protocol while secretary

In a September 2015 interview with the FBI, a former agent who worked on the security details of both former secretaries of state Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton complained of a “stark difference” between Rice and Clinton in terms of their adherence to security and diplomatic protocols.

According to newly released documents by the FBI related to its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary, the former agent said that while Rice “observed strict adherence to State Department security and diplomatic protocols,” Clinton “frequently and ‘blatantly’ disregarded them.”

The agent told the FBI that it is standard protocol for the secretary to ride in the same car as the local U.S. ambassador while traveling in countries abroad, and the protocol was for the secretary to arrive at diplomatic functions with the ambassador. Clinton, the agent said, “refused to do so,” according to the FBI report, “instead choosing to be accompanied in the limousine by her Chief of Staff, Huma Abedin. This frequently resulted in complaints by ambassadors who were insulted and embarrassed by this breach of protocol.”

The agent said that Abedin “possessed ‘much more power’ over Clinton’s staff and schedule than other former chiefs of staff” and “believed that Abedin herself was often responsible for overriding security and diplomatic protocols on behalf of Clinton.”

One example cited by the former agent took place in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2009, when Clinton wanted to visit a clean cooking stoves initiative in an area that the security staff said “could not be secured and was lined with dangerous circumstances and individuals.” The security team wanted the photo op struck from her schedule, but were informed “it was going to happen because ‘she wanted it.’”

Security agents felt that this “placed Clinton, her staff, the media and her security detail in unnecessary danger in order to conduct a photo opportunity for ‘her [presidential] election campaign.’” They also felt, according to the former agent’s interview with the FBI, that Clinton was using her position to campaign for the presidency.

They thought, said this agent, that she “traveled with hand-picked media who would present her in favorable light in order to garner political support,” and that she “disregarded security and diplomatic protocols…in order to gain favorable press.”

In the course of the interview with the FBI, the former agent also accused Clinton and her staff of “removing lamps and furniture from the State Department which were transported to her residence in Washington, D.C.” The agent did not know whether the items were returned once her tenure ended.

The release is part of its response to several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and the FBI is making the documents public in the interest of transparency. The agency redacted the classified material in its release, which can be found in “The Vault,” the FBI’s electronic FOIA library.

The Clinton campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

  33. Niger troops repel attack on prison holding ‘terrorists’ (yahoo, Oct 17, 2016)
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/niger-repels-attack-prison-where-terrorists-held-092645123.html

“Koutoukale (Niger) (AFP) – Armed forces in Niger repelled a pre-dawn attack Monday on a top security prison where “terrorists” are being held, the interior minister said.

The attack, which took place around 4:00 am (0300 GMT), saw gunmen attacking a prison in Koutoukale, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) northwest of the capital Niamey, Interior Minister Mohamed Bazoum said.

But troops guarding the facility “repelled” the attack, prompting an exchange of fire in which one gunman was killed and two guards were injured, he said.

“There are two prison guards wounded and one dead among the enemy,” Bazoum said, amending earlier remarks in which he said there were “several dead wearing explosive belts”.

Considered to be Niger’s most secure prison, the facility holds the country’s most dangerous detainees, including jihadists from groups active in the Sahel area and Islamist militants from Nigeria’s Boko Haram.

It also holds security prisoners from neighbouring Mali.

The attack took place just hours after officials confirmed that a US aid worker had been kidnapped and taken across the border to Mali, in the first such abduction of an American in this West African country.

Outside the bullet-marked walls of the prison, an AFP correspondent saw the body of one of the attackers, two explosive belts and three charred motorbikes.

“This is proof of the terrorist nature of the operation,” an interior ministry statement said.

“An unknown number (of gunmen) who were heavily armed… fled and our forces are searching for them.”

Speaking to AFP, a source in the security services said the gunmen had been spotted by troops guarding the facility, prompting an exchange of fire.

“They were unable to get near the jail because a gunfight broke out with soldiers who are guarding it,” the source said.

The prison is located in a bushy area which is linked to the country’s main highway by a dirt track which runs for several kilometres and has been left deliberately unpaved to make access difficult.

Initial reports said the attackers arrived on motorbikes but failed to get into the facility.

    – On the run –

Outside the prison, the body of the attacker was clothed in a grey robe and a turban. Around his waist was an undetonated explosive belt.

Another explosive belt was visible on one of the motorbikes.

Speaking to AFP, the security source said troops were hunting for several other attackers who had fled the scene, saying the number involved in the attack “remains unknown.”

Security was considerably stepped up at checkpoints leading into Niamey, an AFP correspondent said.

Attacks on prisons are common in this arid west African nation, which is one of the world’s poorest countries…”

  34. French school pupil told to ‘cut beard or go home’ (thelocal, Oct 17, 2016)
    https://www.thelocal.fr/20161017/french-pupil-told-to-cut-beard-or-go-home

“The headteacher of a French school has told a pupil to “cut back his beard or go home”, claiming it is a sign of radicalization, according to reports

The young Muslim pupil at a high school in Seine-Saint-Denis in the northern suburbs of Paris, says he has been growing his beard out for two years.

But the facial hair is not to the liking of the school’s headmaster, who reportedly asked the pupil to trim it back.

“I explained that I grew it for religious reasons, and he said it was a sign of radicalization and told me: You cut it or you leave,” the student told Le Parisien newspaper.

There are no rules against pupils having beards, and the 21-year-old was quick to point out that he wasn’t alone in having one.

“I’m not the only one with a beard, there are teachers and students that have them,” he said. “It’s important to me, the Prophet [Mohammed] had one,” he said.

The bearded pupil said that he has since told the headmaster that he would be dropping out of the school.

Educational authorities have denied there was any issue around beards or an ultimatum from the headmaster.

The issue of demonstrating signs of religion openly is a touchy issue in secular France.

France imposed a ban in 2004 on pupils being able to display any religious items such as the hijab veil worn by Muslim women, but there was no mention of beards.

Schools in France have cracked down on other fashions of late that have been deemed “too religious”, even though they’re not against the dress codes.

In May a teenage Muslim girl was barred from entering her school grounds for wearing a long black skirt seen as too openly religious.

The headmistress reportedly deemed that the skirt “conspicuously” showed religious affiliation, which is banned in schools by France’s strict secularity laws.

Teachers and school staff are under pressure to report signs of radicalisation among pupils to police.

Earlier this year the education minister said that the names of hundreds of pupils had been passed on.”

  35. German court sentences Facebook user to jail for xenophobic comments (DW, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.dw.com/en/german-court-sentences-facebook-user-to-jail-for-xenophobic-comments/a-36069082

“A court in Würzburg in southern Germany has sentenced a man to jail for writing hateful comments against Jews and migrants. The punishment follows calls by German politicians to counter online hate propaganda.

Judges in Würzburg on Monday sentenced the Facebook user to one and a half years behind bars for writing far-right comments on the social media website. Last year, another local court sentenced the man to two years and three months in prison after he published slogans in 2014, advocating violence and the murder of Jews, foreigners and refugees.

Judges on Monday noted that the man expressed remorse at having written those comments. However, they justified the sentence, saying the man had a long history of offences and that online hate speech was on the rise in Germany.

    MPs urge action

Many politicians in Germany have been complaining of the rise in xenophobic comments in the last few years, a phenomenon that has coincided with the arrival of hundreds and thousands of refugees into the country.

In September 2015, the government asked internet companies like Google, Twitter and Facebook to remove hateful slogans from their websites within 24 hours of them being reported. However, several users say their requests to remove offensive content often go unheard.
    Large fines mooted

Last week, German politician Volker Kauder proposed a fine of 50,000 euros for every comment that online companies failed to remove from their websites. Speaking to the German magazine, “Der Spiegel,” he said social networks should come with a warning like the one on cigarette packs, saying “Anyone who communicates here must expect insulting remarks.”

The government is also planning to launch a compensation system for victims of online hate speech. In September, the federal criminal office BKA launched raids across the country to catch hate propagators.

“Our society is based on moral principles – offline and online… Any alleged spheres of lawlessness are not acceptable,” German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said at the time.”

    • Merkels applied pathological altruism offends me deeply. (And actions are surely more offensive than just words.) Will I get compensated now by the German gov?

  36. Birthrate in Germany highest in 33 years (DW, Oct 17, 2016)
    http://www.dw.com/en/birthrate-in-germany-highest-in-33-years/a-36058323

“The birthrate in Germany has risen to 1.5 children per woman, the first time it has risen so high in 33 years. The new statistics confirm a trend in recent years of a rising birthrate.

The average woman in Germany has 1.5 children, the highest rate since 1982, the German statistics office said on Monday.

“We observe the continuation of a positive development since 2012,” the statistic office said.
In 2014, the birthrate stood at 1.47 children per woman.

The most populous country in the European Union, Germany has more than 81 million people but has one of the lowest birthrates in the world.

Germany’s aging population and a birthrate below the replacement rate of 2.1 children per women has prompted concerns over the declining population’s impact on the economy and social security.

To fill the gap, Germany has relied on importing workers and accepting migrants, including more than 800,000 asylum seekers who arrived in the country in 2015.

The statistics released on Monday show German women had 1.43 children on average in 2015, up slightly from 1.42 in 2014.

However, the birthrate non-German origin women increased from 1.86 to 1.95 children per woman from 2014 to 2015, thereby “contributing significantly to the increase in the combined birthrate of all women,” the statistics office said.

The average age of women at first birth was on average 29 years and seven months, a second child by nearly 32 years old and a third child by around 33 years old.

The statistics apply to women between 15 and 49 years old.”

“Denmark’s leading tabloid newspaper has pulled down a post claiming immigrants were kidnapping Danish girls for sex slaves, after it became the country’s second most viral story.

The Ekstra Bladet newspaper published the article, ‘Trend comes to Denmark: Immigrants kidnap Danish girls for sex’ in the “People’s Post” section of its website, where users can post their own articles.

The text asserted with little evidence that Muslims were over 200 times more likely to kidnap women for the purposes of sex slavery than non-Muslims.

As the story took off on social media, the newspaper drew strong criticism from politicians and journalists.

The Chairman of the Danish Journalism Union Lars Werge warned that the newspaper was damaging its credibility in a tweet to editor Poul Madsen…”
