  1. Thai military court opens trial in Bangkok shrine blast

BANGKOK — A Thai military court on Tuesday began the trial of two foreigners charged with the bombing of a popular shrine in Bangkok’s center a year ago that killed 20 people and injured more than 120.

The defendants — two ethnic Uighurs of Chinese nationality – were driven straight into the military court building, preventing reporters from approaching them.

The bombing on Aug. 17, 2015, was one of the deadliest acts of violence in Thailand in decades. It went off at the Erawan shrine, popular among Chinese and other tourists, in the center of Bangkok. Of the dead, 14 were tourists.

The two men — Mieraili Yusufu and Bilal Mohammad, also known as Adem Karadag — have pleaded not guilty, and at a recent pre-trial appearance they broke down in tears alleging mistreatment by Thai authorities. They are the only two men in custody out of the 17 people that authorities say were responsible.

“Today is the first day for witness testimony … I think it (the trial) will last until next year. It will take quite some time,” said Chuchart Kanpai, the lawyer for one of the defendants.

Thai authorities have said the bombing was revenge by a people-smuggling gang whose activities were disrupted by a crackdown. However, some analysts suspected it might have been the work of Uighur separatists angry that Thailand in July had forcibly repatriated scores of Uighurs to China, where they may be persecuted.

The Erawan Shrine is especially popular among Chinese tourists, and many were among the victims of the bombing.

Chuchart has told reporters in the past that Bilal had been tortured to admit that he was the person seen in surveillance video planting the bomb. Bilal says his captors poured cold water into his nose, threatened to send him back to China and had a barking dog frighten him.

Police say the case against the two men is supported by closed-circuit television footage, witnesses, DNA matching and physical evidence, in addition to their confessions. Police believe Yusufu detonated the bomb minutes after a backpack containing the device was left at the shrine by Bilal.

Since a May 2014 coup installed the military in power, its courts in Thailand have handed criminal cases deemed to involve national security.

The two men have been held at an army base since their arrest in late August and early September 2015. No other details of their interrogation have been revealed. Some of the 15 other suspects are Turks, with whom Uighurs share ethnic bonds, and Turkey is home to a large Uighur community. Beijing charges that some Uighurs are Islamist terrorists and that some have been smuggled out of China to join Islamic State fighters in Syria via Turkey.

  2. Turkey strikes IS and Kurdish positions in Syria ahead of offensive (BBC, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37161538

“Turkey has bombarded so-called Islamic State (IS) targets at Jarablus in northern Syria amid reports Syrian rebels are to launch an offensive against the group.

Some 1,500 Turkish-backed Syrian rebels are thought to be in the Turkish town of Gaziantep waiting to attack.

A bomb attack on a wedding there killed more than 50 people on Saturday.

Turkey also shelled positions at Manbij held by Kurdish YPG fighters, who have been advancing against IS.

  3. Yemen crisis: Oxfam critical of UK-Saudi arms deals (BBC, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-37161486

“The aid agency Oxfam has accused UK ministers of “denial and disarray” over an agreement to sell arms to Saudi Arabia, which could be used in Yemen.

The Saudi-backed Yemeni government is fighting against Shia rebels.

The UK government has faced repeated calls to ban weapons sales to Saudi Arabia amid concerns over international humanitarian law breaches in that war.

A government spokeswoman said it was satisfied the Saudi deals complied with the UK’s “export licensing criteria”.

Oxfam says the UK has switched from being an “enthusiastic backer” of the Arms Trade Treaty to “one of the most significant violators”.

The treaty sets international standards for the trade in conventional arms and seeks to prevent illegal arms trading.

Governments who sign up to it – such as the UK – are expected to review arms export contracts to ensure the weapons do not violate existing arms embargoes, will not be used for war crimes, human rights abuses or organised crime and will not be diverted for illegal use…”

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pakistan-seals-offices-ethnic-party-accused-violence-41584477

“Pakistan’s paramilitary Rangers have shuttered the offices of an ethnic party accused of violence after overnight clashes in Karachi left one person dead and eight wounded.

Brig. Khurram Shahzad says the troops raided and sealed several offices of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in the port city of Karachi, Hyderabad and elsewhere in the country on Tuesday. He says some weapons were found and confiscated.

MQM supporters had attacked TV stations and clashed with police in Karachi after their self-exiled leader, Altaf Hussain, broadcast a speech against the Pakistani government from London on Monday night.

The MQM has a history of violent protests and clashes with police and rival political parties in Karachi.

The Rangers, a paramilitary force that polices Karachi, also arrested a number of local MQM leaders and lawmakers.”

“As the Islamic State group loses ground in Iraq, the militants are showing strains in their rule over areas they still control, growing more brutal, killing deserters and relying on younger and younger recruits, according to residents who fled battleground territories.

The accounts point to the difficulties the extremist group faces as Iraqi forces, backed by the United States, prepare for an assault on Mosul, the largest city still in the militants’ hands. For months, Iraqi troops, militias and Kurdish fighters have been clawing back territory town by town, making their way toward the northern city…”

  7. Merkel Urges Turkish-Rooted Residents to Be Loyal to Germany (abcnews, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/merkel-urges-turkish-rooted-residents-loyal-germany-41584250

“Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling on people with Turkish roots who are longtime German residents to be loyal to Germany.

Merkel’s comments in an interview with the daily Ruhr Nachrichten published Tuesday come during a tense period in German-Turkish relations.

Ankara was angered by the German Parliament’s vote in June to label the killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks a century ago as genocide, and has bristled at criticism of its crackdown following a coup attempt. Germany is home to roughly 3 million people with Turkish roots.

Merkel was quoted as saying: “We expect of people of Turkish origin who have long lived in Germany that they develop a high degree of loyalty to our country.” She added that Germany will try to keep “an open ear” for their concerns.”

  8. Worldwide concern over ‘too many immigrants’:

Paris (AFP) – People throughout the world are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with immigration levels which are higher than any time since the Second World War, according to a new survey published Monday.

At least six out of 10 people in France and Belgium, which have recently suffered deadly jihadist attacks, believe immigration has had a “negative impact”, said the Ipsos polling institute.

Similar figures were found in Russia, Hungary and also Italy, which has had to deal with large numbers of migrants fleeing the Middle East or Africa and seeking to forge new lives in Europe.

In all, 49 percent of those surveyed in 22 countries said there were “too many immigrants” and 46 percent felt “immigration is causing their country to change in ways they don’t like,” Ipsos said in a statement.

The Japanese were least likely to say there are too many immigrants in their country (only 12 percent), and the Brazilians least likely to voice discomfort at how immigration is changing their country (23 percent), according to the study.

  9. FBI Investigating Possible ISIS-Inspired Knife Attack in Virginia

The FBI has launched a federal terrorism investigation into a weekend stabbing in Roanoke, Va., looking at whether the attacker may have been trying to behead his victim in an alleged ISIS-inspired assault, sources tell ABC News.

Federal authorities have been aware of the alleged attacker, 20-year-old Wasil Farooqui, of the Roanoke area, for some time, sources familiar with the case told ABC News. In the past year, he traveled to Turkey and may have tried to sneak into Syria, where ISIS is recruiting and inspiring sympathizers from across the world, sources said.

Feds Arrest NC Man for Allegedly Trying to Organize ISIS-Inspired Attacks in US

Farooqui was arrested Saturday by Roanoke County Police on charges of assault with malicious wounding, and he’s being held without bond at the Western Virginia Regional Jail, according to the sources and a jail database.

During the Saturday stabbing, Farooqui allegedly injured a man and woman at an apartment complex in Roanoke, yelling “Allah Akbar” as he attacked them with a knife, sources told ABC News.

  10. The Pentagon Takes Aim at Bomb-Carrying Consumer Drones

They’re cheap, they’re light, and they can carry a small bomb: The commercial drone is essentially a new terror gadget for organizations such as Hezbollah, Islamic State, or anyone else looking to wreak havoc on a budget.

“That’s the same quad copter you can get on Groupon or go down to Sam’s Club and buy for $400,” U.S. Marine Corps Commandant General Robert Neller said last week at a Washington forum on future warfare. The elusive nature of small drones is one reason the federal government has designated the District of Columbia a “national defense airspace” and prohibited drone flights there. A recent spate of drone-related incidents, including one last year in which a drone crashed on the White House lawn, probably didn’t help, either.

But the problem is no longer about enthusiasts with a bad sense of direction. Weaponized to various degrees of sophistication, such unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are now being used in the Syrian civil war and along parts of Lebanese and Syrian borders with Israel, where Hezbollah holds sway.

“There has been an increasing concern in the military and a wider acceptance of how pernicious this problem is going to be, moving forward,” says Andrew Metrick, an intelligence security analyst at the Center for Strategic & International Studies. “From a U.S. and allies perspective, we haven’t had to think about how to fight where we don’t have total aerial supremacy.”

  11. Soros’s campaign of global chaos

The first thing that we see is the megalomaniacal nature of Soros’s philanthropic project. No corner of the globe is unaffected by his efforts. No policy area is left untouched.

Major media outlets in the US have ignored the leak of thousands of emails from billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundation by the activist hacker group DCLeaks. The OSF is the vehicle through which Soros has funneled billions of dollars over the past two decades to non-profit organizations in the US and throughout the world.

According to the documents, Soros has given more than $30 million to groups working for Hillary Clinton’s election in November, making him her largest single donor. So it is likely the case that the media’s support for Clinton has played some role in the mainstream media’s bid to bury the story.

    • Leaked Doc: Soros Open Society Seeks to Reshape Census, Electoral Districts

According to a hacked document, George Soros’s Open Society Foundation is funding key progressive groups with the stated goal of attempting to “influence appropriations for the (U.S.) Census Bureau” while pushing to change the methods in which racial categories are counted for the coming 2020 Census.

The 2020 Census is critical in determining the gain or loss of districts and the reapportionment of the numbers of House seats allotted to each state, otherwise known as redistricting. The Census could determine whether Democrats have a better chance at gaining control of the House next decade.

Soros’s group clearly understands the centrality of the 2020 Census and is apparently seeking to influence the outcome.

  12. Afghans push India for more arms, despite Pakistan’s wary eye

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India is set to deliver more arms to Afghanistan to help it fight Islamist militants, Kabul’s envoy to New Delhi said, even if Pakistan is wary of closer military cooperation between countries lying to its east and west.

India has provided a little over $2 billion in economic assistance to Afghanistan in the last 15 years, but has been more measured in providing weapons in order to avoid a backlash from Pakistan, which sees Afghanistan as its area of influence.

Last December, after years of dragging its feet, New Delhi announced the supply of four attack helicopters in India’s first transfer of lethal equipment to the government in Kabul since the hardline Islamist Taliban movement was toppled.

Kabul immediately deployed three of the Russian Mi-25 attack helicopters to go after insurgents, and the fourth will be inducted in the next few weeks.

Shaida Mohammad Abdali, the Afghan ambassador to India, said regional security was deteriorating and Afghan national forces were in dire need of military supplies to tackle the Taliban, Islamic State and other militant groups.

“We are grateful for the four helicopters. But we need more, we need much more. Today we are heading into a situation that is worrisome for everyone in the region including India,” he told Reuters in an interview.

In an address directed toward Moroccans living abroad, Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco, said that they should “always be among the first to defend peace, harmony, and coexistence in their countries of residence.”

Calling the killing of a priest in his church “unforgivable,” Mohammed VI said that the Jihadists are “led by ignorance” and are “destined to dwell in Hell for all eternity.”

“Can anyone of sound mind believe that the reward for Jihad could be some virgins in Paradise?” he asked in the address, which was broadcast by Morocco’s Channel 1 on August 20.

Former London Mayor Ken Livingstone: The Establishment of Israel “Fundamentally Wrong”; In ’32, Hitler Wanted to Deport the Zionists, Not to Kill Jews

Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said, in an interview with Al-Ghad Al-Arabi TV, that when Hitler came to power in 1932, he did not want to kill the Jews.

He just wanted to “deport all the Zionists to Israel,” said Livingstone, who further claimed that Britain and the U.S. should have absorbed the Jewish refugees following WWII, rather than enabling the establishment of the state of Israel, which was “fundamentally wrong.”

Livingstone added that he never buys Israeli products and that the failure to resolve the Palestinian problem leads Muslims to join ISIS. The interview was conducted on May 4, 2016.

  17. BREITBART – Migrants Set Fire To Asylum Centre While Smoking Hookah Pipe

Two migrants set fire to their asylum accommodation in Germany after smoking a hookah water pipe which resulted in the hot coal setting the home ablaze.

An asylum home in the German town of Gößweinstein in Upper Franconia has been completely destroyed. The fire that cause the destruction of the asylum home is said to have been started by a pair of Syrian migrants who had been smoking a middle eastern water pipe, known as a hookah. The hookah, which uses hot exposed coals is said to have started the fire which led to an evacuation of the asylum home reports Die Welt.

the fire, which erupted in the early hours of Saturday morning has left the eight asylum seekers who lived there without a home. According to police all eight migrants, including three children were able to escape the fire before anyone was seriously injured. Over 200 emergency personnel from fire fighters to police and paramedics were needed on the scene due to the severity of the fire and to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. Authorities have estimated that the total cost in property damage could amount to more than 100,000 euros.

Authorities say that the fire first started in a storage area on the ground floor. Two Syrian migrants were suspected of starting the fire and arrest warrants were issued for the pair.

Once arrested each had a conflicting story as to what happened. Police had first suspected possible “xenophobic” motives behind the blaze. Breitbart London has previously reported that many of the so-called “xenophobic attacks” on asylum homes are as little as a rock thrown at a window or a “propaganda attack” in which anti-migrant slogans are posted on the buildings.

Police have confirmed that they suspect the two Syrians of arson due to negligence and unlike many migrants who commit crimes they will not be released before their trial.

Breitbart London reported on a high profile case of arson by migrants that occurred earlier this year in Dusseldorf. The migrant who set fire to his asylum is understood to have done so because he had not been woken up in time to eat before fasting for Ramadan. During the Ramadan holiday Muslims must fast during daylight hours and many eat before sunrise as well as at night.

Another arson at an asylum home earlier this year in Germany appeared to be a more clear cut case of right-wing extremism. An asylum home that was burned down in Bingen am Rhein was found to have had swastika graffiti on the walls. Investigators later discovered that the man who carried out the arson was in fact a Syrian asylum seeker who had planted the swastikas on the walls to frame neo-Nazis and fool the police.

  18. Brussels police hold Filipina after bus stabbing

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Belgian police identified a woman who stabbed and wounded three people on a Brussels bus on Monday as a 52-year-old originally from the Philippines whom they do not believe acted from political motives.

The woman, accused of attempted murder, had yet to be questioned by prosecutors as she was receiving medical attention after being shot by police during the incident on a busy shopping street, spokesman Xavier Dellicour said on Tuesday.

“No motive is being ruled out at this stage but terrorism is not the most likely case,” said Dellicour, whose office is not the one which normally handles terrorism cases in Belgium.

The three people wounded were all released from hospital on Monday. Local media quoted witnesses as saying an argument broke out on the No. 38 bus and the woman pulled out a knife. Police shot her twice after she got off but refused to cooperate.

The woman’s name has not been released.

The Belgian capital has been on high alert since local Islamic State militants carried out the attacks in Paris last November and suicide bombings in Brussels itself in March.

Since a man killed 85 people in Nice last month by driving a truck into Bastille Day crowds, a string of less violent incidents elsewhere on the continent has kept Europeans on edge.

  20. Huma Abedin, Hillary’s Bribe Broker
Strong evidence of Hillary and Huma’s pay-to-play conspiracy emerges in new email dump.

Embattled Hillary Clinton enforcer Huma Abedin gave foreign leaders and activists special access to Clinton when she was secretary of state after they donated to the congenitally corrupt Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, according to newly released emails.

It is yet more evidence that in the event Hillary becomes president her administration will be at least as venal and crooked as her husband Bill’s was. Bill sold nights in the Lincoln bedroom at the White House while he was president but Hillary has been selling her presidential favors in advance for years through the tax-exempt Clinton Foundation, which is little more than an anticipatory bribe processing center. With Hillary installed in the Oval Office, the sky’s the limit.

The trove of newly released emails obtained by watchdog group Judicial Watch through the courts appear to show that Abedin served as a gatekeeper auctioning access to the would-be president in exchange for donations to the Clinton Foundation. When individuals wanted to meet with Hillary, Abedin would say no, and introduce them to the foundation. After the so-called donation was received access to Clinton would be approved.

  21. Soros’s Campaign of Global Chaos
Piercing the veil of the megalomaniacal nature of Soros’s philanthropic project.

Major media outlets in the US have ignored the leak of thousands of emails from billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundation by the activist hacker group DCLeaks. So it is likely the case that the media’s support for Clinton has played some role in the mainstream media’s bid to bury the story.

It is also likely however, that at least some news editors failed to understand why the leaked documents were worth covering. Most of the information was already public knowledge. Soros’s massive funding of far-left groups in the US and throughout the world has been documented for more than a decade.

But failing to see the significance of the wider story because many of the details were already known is a case of missing the forest for the trees. The DCLeaks document dump is a major story because it exposes the forest of Soros’s funding networks.

The first thing that we see is the megalomaniacal nature of Soros’s philanthropic project. No corner of the globe is unaffected by his efforts. No policy area is left untouched.

  22. Be sure and read the entire article, it shows how far from a classical education the US Universities (and I suppose the rest of the world’s) have strayed. This is lunacy of the first order.

    College Campus Lunacy
Another school year begins — and so does the politically correct insanity.

As the fall semester begins, parents, students, taxpayers and donors should be made aware of official college practices that should disgust us all.

Hampshire College will offer some of its students what the school euphemistically calls “identity-based housing.” That’s segregated housing for students who — because of their race, culture, gender or sexual orientation — have “historically experienced oppression.” I’d bet the rent money that Hampshire College will not offer Jewish, Irish, Polish, Chinese or Catholic students segregated housing. Because there is no group of people who have not faced oppression, Hampshire College is guilty of religious and ethnic discrimination in its housing segregation policy.

University of Connecticut administrators think that more black men will graduate if they spend more time together. According to Campus Reform, they are building a new residence hall to facilitate just that. Dr. Erik Hines, the faculty director for the program, said that the learning community “is a space for African-American men to … come together and validate their experiences that they may have on campus. … It’s also a space where they can have conversation and also talk with individuals who come from the same background who share the same experience.” By the way, Hampshire College and the University of Connecticut are not alone in promoting racially segregated student housing.

  23. Group of Men Shouting ‘Black Lives Matter’ Brutally Attack White Victims, Beating One Unconscious: Police

    AKRON, OH (WOIO) –

A group of men chanting “Black Lives Matter” was accused of viciously beating up seven white victims in Akron early Sunday morning.

According to the police report, the attack happened around 12:30 a.m. in the area of Carroll and Goodkirk streets.

Police said seven white men were walking when they were approached by five black men and two white men, shouting, “Black lives matter.”

The suspects started hitting them with bottles, punching and kicking the victims. One victim fell to the ground and was kicked in the head several times before losing consciousness. The suspects then took the victims’ belongings before running off.

Both Akron police and University of Akron officers responded and located the suspects nearby.

  24. Quebec author faces slander trial for ‘greatly tarnishing’ Muslim school

During a 2012 radio interview, Djemila Benhabib likened a private, Muslim school in Montréal to militant Islamic training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

MONTREAL—A slander trial is set to begin next month pitting a fiercely secular, feminist author against a private, Muslim school in Montreal she likened to militant Islamic training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Djemila Benhabib, an award-winning author and twice-failed Parti Québécois candidate, is claiming freedom of expression, while the school wants $95,000 from her for “greatly tarnishing” its reputation.

Julius Grey, a well-known human-rights and freedom-of-expression lawyer, is defending the school in this case and says he will argue Benhabib crossed the line and caused real harm to the institution.

“I regret nothing,” Benhabib said in an interview Monday as she referred to the 2012 radio comments that have landed her in court.

Benhabib told the Montreal host in 2012 she was concerned by the selection of Qur’anic verses published on the website of the Muslims Schools of Montreal, a private institution that teaches elementary and high school.

The school is accredited by the provincial government and follows the curriculum outlined by the Education Department.

During the 2012 interview, Benhabib said the verses, which have since been removed from the website, inappropriately referred to the need for young girls to stay pure. She also stated they criticized non-Muslims.

Additionally, she was upset at a school pamphlet distributed in the community showing young girls wearing the hijab. And Benhabib took umbrage at the document stating that part of the institution’s mission was to help students “establish a solid relationship with Allah.”

“(The school) resembles the kind of indoctrination similar to what goes on in a military camp in Afghanistan or Pakistan,” she told the radio host.

Moreover, she added the school “models itself on a society different than ours. It’s a model where women have to lower their heads and walk behind men. Where kids are forced to learn Qur’anic verses and where, probably, men will commit honour crimes against their sisters.”

Benhabib was born in Ukraine to a Muslim-Algerian father and a Greek-Cypriot mother.

She said she “suffered through an Islamic educational system” and has vowed to fight against what she calls “political Islam.”

Grey said in an interview the case isn’t about freedom of expression but about slander.

“We are going to argue that the comparison made with terrorism is a particular dangerous one in our time,” Grey said.

“It’s used to create fear and discredit people without any basis and, because of the atmosphere, one has to be careful before one suggests that an organization — which is a perfectly normal and reasonable association — has anything to do with terrorism or training radicalization.”

Benhabib said she never used the word terrorism. She is hosting a fundraiser in early September to help pay her legal costs.

The court case begins Sept. 26.

  25. Israel: Israeli President Rivlin squeezes through Gaza border tunnel

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin attempted to squeeze through a recently discovered Palestinian underground tunnel near the Reim military base close to the Israeli-Gaza border on Tuesday.

According to local media, the tunnel was discovered after Israel arrested an alleged Hamas member from Gaza, who had reportedly disclosed information about the tunnel network. Authorities did not disclose whether the information was directly related to the arrest.

  26. Muslims not welcome in Czech Republic – PM

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said Tuesday he does not want a “large Muslim community” and that each EU member should be able to choose how many migrants to accept.

“We don’t have a large Muslim community here,” Sobotka said of the estimated 10,000 to 20,000 Muslims who live in the Central European country of 10.5 million people.

“And to be honest, we don’t want a large Muslim community to form here, given the problems we’re seeing,” Sobotka told the Pravo daily.

Sobotka spoke ahead German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Prague on Thursday, saying their “views diverge” on how to solve Europe’s migrant crisis.

Merkel has urged countries to take in a greater share of refugees, while the Czech Republic staunchly opposes the contested EU quota system devised to distribute refugees across the bloc.

“I’ve been convinced since the start of the migration debate that the member states need to have sovereignty regarding the choice of the number of refugees (to welcome),” Sobotka said.

“It’s the national governments that ultimately have to ensure people’s security.”

The leftist premier however cautioned against casting refugees as terrorists.

“It’s not possible to put an equal sign between refugees and terrorists. But at the same time, it’s not possible to have the same approach as Germany last year, namely to authorise the influx of a huge number of people without any oversight,” he said.

Merkel will also on Thursday meet with Czech President Milos Zeman, who earlier this month said he opposed taking in any migrants at all.

He recently described Merkel’s migration policy – which saw Germany take in 1.1 million migrants and refugees last year – as “absurd”.

  27. Man kill his wife and mother in law in Herat province (khaama, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.khaama.com/man-kill-his-wife-and-mother-in-law-in-herat-province-01762

“A man has killed his wife and mother in law in western Herat province apparently due to domestic violence, local officials said Tuesday.

Provincial police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said the perpetrator has been identified and efforts are underway for his arrest.

No further details have been given regarding the main motive behind the murder of the women and her mother but Ibrahimi said the two were shot dead by the man.

This comes as violence against women has been on rise across the country during the recent months which takes place mainly due to domestic violence.

Earlier a woman was brutally stabbed to death in broad day light in Pul-e-Khumri city, the provincial capital of nothern Baghlan province of Afghanistan.

A 20-year-old woman also los ther life two days ago after she was brutally tortured by her husband in this province.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in its report released late in November last year said “statistic of violence against women, obtained from the registered cases of violence against women during the first six months in 1394 exceeds 2579 cases.”

The report further added that figure was reported 2403 cases during the six months in 1393 which shows 7.32 percent increase in 1394, the last solar year.”

    http://gulfnews.com/news/mena/iran/iran-s-revolutionary-guard-targets-450-social-media-users-1.1884020

“Tehran: The cyber arm of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard says it has summoned, detained and warned some 450 administrators of social media groups in recent weeks.

The announcement on Tuesday, carried on a website affiliated with the Guard’s cyber arm, says those detained used social media like the messaging app Telegram, which is popular in Iran.

The announcement says those detained or summoned made posts that were considered immoral, were related to modelling, or which insulted religious beliefs. It says the Guard only took action after “judicial procedures” were completed, without elaborating.

In May, authorities announced an operation targeting those involved in modelling on Instagram.

The arrests are part of a larger cultural struggle in Iran between hard-liners and moderates over the country’s future.”

  29. Twin sons of Iraqi diplomat probed by police after savage attack on 15-year-old (express, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/703165/Twin-sons-Iraqi-diplomat-probed-police-savage-attack-teenager

“ONE of the twin sons of an Iraqi diplomat said “things like this happen every day in Portugal” after he and his brother were accused of brutally attacking a 15-year-old.

Haider Ali and Ridha Ali, 17, sons of Saad Mohammed Ridha Ali, the Iraqi ambassador to Portugal, were taken to the police station in the small town of Ponte de Sor on suspicion of running over and beating down Rúben Cavaco.

They were released shortly after because of diplomatic immunity laws which protect them from prosecution, according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Cavaco is said to be fighting for his life after being airlifted to Santa Maria hospital in Lisbon and put in a medically induced coma.

The attack happened during the early hours of Wednesday in Ponte de Sor, where one of the twins attended flying lessons at a nearby air base.

Police officers were called to a local bar at around 2am after a brawl started between a group of local youngsters, including Rúben Cavaco, according to Major Marco Cruz.

He told Público: “They were all identified and no one wanted to press charges.”

Less than two hours later, the teenager was found alone and unconscious, having suffered multiple injuries and a serious brain injury.

Local workers called the emergency services at 03:50am.

The captain of Ponte de Sor’s fire fighting team said the boy looked “unrecognisable”.

Witnesses claimed they saw a black Mercedes with a diplomatic plate leave the scene, with some neighbours saying they were “too afraid” to go and help.

Local authorities were able to identify the two brothers, who have denied running over the 15-year-old, but could not charge them due to international laws.

The Portuguese minister for foreign affairs said in an interview with SIC last night that he would ask Iraq to strip the ambassador’s sons from diplomatic immunity if “that is what it will take to establish the facts”.

Augusto Santos Silva said: “Diplomatic immunity is important in order to protect and defend diplomacy, but it does not allow abuse.”

A statement by the Iraqi embassy in Lisbon posted on the foreign affairs official website read that Haider and Ridha had acted in self-defence after being “severely assaulted by a group of six boys”.

However, the brothers show no apparent physical injury during their interview with TV channel SIC…”

    • NYT – Iraqi Diplomat’s Sons Suspected of Attacking Boy in Portugal

LISBON, Portugal — The twin sons of Iraq’s ambassador to Portugal are suspected of leaving a teenager in a coma following an assault, and the government says it may ask Iraq to lift their diplomatic immunity from prosecution in a case that has provoked a national outcry.

One of the 17-year-old sons admitted in a Portuguese television interview broadcast Tuesday that he assaulted the 15-year-old Portuguese boy following an altercation in a bar. The victim was in a coma for five days but regained consciousness and left intensive care Tuesday, according to family lawyer Santana-Maia Leonardo.

Portugal’s foreign minister, Augusto Santos Silva, said the Aug. 17 attack in the town of Ponte de Sor, 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Lisbon, could merit criminal charges but would require Iraq’s cooperation, because the boys — sons of Iraq Ambassador Saad Mohammed Ridha — enjoy diplomatic immunity.

“If lifting these people’s diplomatic immunity is necessary for justice to be done in this extremely serious case, then Portugal will take steps, with the Iraqi authorities, for that immunity to be lifted,” Santos Silva told SIC television.

Emergency services said the victim suffered broken facial bones and was taken by helicopter to a Lisbon hospital.

A statement from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry characterized the ambassador’s sons as victims of “a heavy beating” by six people at a restaurant. It said one son received a broken nose and rib as the six-member group “cursed” the diplomat’s sons “because they were Arabs and Muslims.” The statement added that the ambassador has filed a police complaint.

But in their own interview to SIC, the twins displayed no visible injuries. In excerpts broadcast Tuesday, one of them admitted assaulting the boy when he was spotted on his own, long after the bar altercation, as the twins drove through the town.

One of the sons, identified on screen as Ali Ridha, said he punched the Portuguese boy, knocking him to the ground, then “kicked him a few times” before his brother, Haider, stopped him.

“It’s a dangerous recipe when you have teenagers, alcohol, this group mentality,” Haider Ridha told SIC. “Things get out of control.” Both spoke in English throughout their interview.

They said they haven’t claimed diplomatic immunity and have cooperated with detectives.

A woman who answered the Iraqi embassy telephone said the matter was being handled between embassy staff and the Portuguese Foreign Ministry. She declined to provide further information or her name.

  30. Gothenburg grenade blast is ‘part of a cycle of violence’ (thelocal, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.thelocal.se/20160823/what-happened-in-gothenburg-is-part-of-a-cycle-of-violence-sweden-biskopsgarden

“Is escalating gang crime behind the death of an eight-year-old boy in a Gothenburg suburb? The Local spoke to criminology professor Jerzy Sarnecki and organized crime expert Amir Rostami for their thoughts.

A number of gang-related incidents in Gothenburg have made headlines recently. What is the background to them?

“We have severe gang problems not only in Gothenburg but also other big cities. It relates to several things: one is organized crime in the area, mostly regarding narcotics. There is also a subculture of violence to do with animosities between different factions and gangs,” Sarnecki explained.

“The thing that happened in Gothenburg is part of a cycle of violence,” he added.

“There are two groups and they try to hit each other as hard as possible. In the last year there was a shooting in a restaurant and people were killed. One side might not be happy with the sentence from that case, so they look for a kind of revenge, and are careless, throwing something into a house where they know one of the opposing people lives.”

Rostami agreed that the grenade incident in Gothenburg has a long-standing history…”

“Malmö police have arrested a man after they caught him in the act of setting a vehicle alight in the Rosengård district as the city’s spate of summer car fires continued.

Malmö police have called in both a helicopter and drones to fight the arsonists. But the most recent suspect was caught through rather more traditional police methods.

Officers on a stakeout witnessed two men setting fire to a car on Ramels väg in Rosengård late on Monday night and were able to seize one of them, in his thirties. The other man managed to escape.

The first man, who was known by police, is suspected of vandalism and narcotics offences…”

  32. Teachers’ union: school burqa bans only isolate girls more (thelocal, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.thelocal.de/20160823/teachers-union-banning-burqas-in-school-only-isolates-girls-more

“A German trade union for teachers has warned of the consequences of banning certain religious attire in schools after a teen this week was told she could not wear a face veil to school.

The 18-year-old had taken her school in Osnabrück to court after they told her she would not be able to attend classes so long as she continued to wear a niqab, which leaves the whole body covered except for a slit for the eyes. The court ultimately ruled in favour of the school.

In response, the German Education and Science Workers’ Union (GEW) said on Tuesday that the ruling was a step in the wrong direction.

“A ban on full body veils is completely the wrong way,” said GEW spokeswoman Ilka Hoffmann to newspaper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

“We cannot exclude women from education just because they are wearing the burqa or niqab.”

For fully-veiled girls in strictly conservative households, schools are often their only opportunity to have contact with other people their age, Hoffmann explained.

“During class, they can start to develop self-confidence, which is something that is necessary in order to take off the veil against family tradition,” Hoffmann added.

“We should encourage this kind of transformation process, not hinder it.”

Still, the union sees things differently when it comes to teachers themselves wearing a niqab or burqa.

“Female teachers have to set an example and represent the state. A burqa or niqab does not go along with that…”

  33. Muslim Frenchwoman ‘fined for veil on Cannes beach’ (BBC, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37168192

“A Muslim Frenchwoman says she was fined and faced racial abuse for wearing a hair-covering veil on a Cannes beach.

The woman, a Toulouse native named only as Siam, was strolling on the beach while on holiday with her two children.

She said she was told by three police officers that her clothing was “not correct”. Meanwhile, she says, a crowd gathered, some shouting: “Go home!”

The Cannes mayor earlier this month banned full-body swimsuits known as “burkinis” from the beach.

David Lisnard said they were a “symbol of Islamic extremism” and might spark scuffles, as France is the target of Islamist attacks.

The working of his ruling suggests it could be applied to any “beachwear which ostentatiously displays religious affiliation”…”

  34. Paris tourism hit by militant attacks, strikes and floods (BBC, Aug 23, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37164217

“Attacks by Islamist militants as well as strikes and floods have led to a big fall in tourism in Paris.

There were a million fewer visitors between January and June compared with the same period in 2015.

Paris welcomes 16 million visitors a year and is one of the world’s top tourist destinations.

The drop is estimated to have cost about €750m (£644m) in lost revenue. One senior official described it as “an industrial disaster”…”

  35. North Korea test-fires submarine-launched ballistic missile

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile off its east coast early on Wednesday, South Korea’s military said, the latest in a string of missile launches by the isolated country in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.

The missile was fired at around 5:30 a.m. (4:30 p.m. ET) from near the coastal city of Sinpo, where satellite imagery shows a submarine base to be located, and traveled about 500 kilometers (311 miles), officials at South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Defence Ministry told Reuters.

The projectile landed in Japan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ), an area of control designated by countries to help maintain air security, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported.

North Korea’s “SLBM (submarine-launched ballistic missile) technology appears to have progressed,” a South Korean military official told Reuters.

The launch comes two days after rival South Korea and the United States began annual military exercises in the South that North Korea condemns as a preparation for invasion, and has threatened retaliation.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-korea-test-fires-submarine-launched-ballistic-missile-215107710.html

    • From what I have heard this is the first successful test of a sub launched missile, it was probably done because that North Korean Diplomat defected to the south.

Since this was probably done because of the retaliation it shows that fat boy is pissed and that China is willing to let the world know that North Korea has sub launched missiles. The next question is does North Korea have the ability to make nukes small enough to fit on a sub launched missile?

  36. When Death Is The Alternative, Israel Isn’t So Bad

If the alternative to “Israeli Occupation” is certain death at the hands of the Islamic State barbarians, perhaps Israel’s not so bad.

Every now and then, despite their fervent and fevered desires to paint Israel as evil, hate site Mondoweiss lets a little truth slip out, as in this quote from a Druze Arab living in the “occupied Golan heights”:

… as Syria continues to be in chaos, there is less opposition to Israel’s occupation here. People here in [the] Golan Heights identify with the state of Israel now more than before.

So when the alternative is certain death at the hands of [Assad/ISIS/Russia you choose], living as Israelis in Israel is pretty attractive even despite the “occupation”.

  37. This is what Palestinians do to cop-killers:
Palestinian police beat suspect in custody to death

The alleged ringleader in the killing of two Palestinian policemen has died in custody after being beaten by Palestinian security forces, a senior local official said on Tuesday.
The officers were killed in the West Bank city of Nablus last week when gunmen opened fire on security forces.
Two of the gunmen died in the subsequent shootout.
Ahmed Halawa, the alleged leader of the attackers, was arrested by police overnight and taken to the city’s Jneid prison, Nablus governor Akram Rajub told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Once there, he was severely beaten by security personnel, lost consciousness and later died, Rajub said.
“We’ll examine the incident and draw lessons from it,” he said.

  38. Russia, Israel and Iran: How the Syrian Conflict Created an Adverse Strategic Triangle
Russia’s unprecedented move last week of dispatching warplanes to bomb targets in Syria through an Iranian airbase may have Israeli officials worried.

The move shows growing cooperation between Russia and Iran, Israel’s biggest foe in the Middle East in recent years, and a regime that, like Russia, has been working to maintain the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On Aug. 22, Russian and Iranian officials announced that Russia’s use of the Iranian base has ended. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Qasemi, told the Tasnim news agency that Russia’s operation from the Iranian base “is finished for now.” However, although Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed this, it also stressed that if Iran agrees, Russia could use the base again “depending on the situation” in Syria.
