Selective enforcement: The #1 tool of the totalitarian state. Links 5 for Oct. 26 – 2014

1. Imagine if you will, a first world government of a country famous for its role in the development of science and reason, which made it a crime to say anything about any racial group that anyone might take offense to, even if none were offered, and then went on to define any group at all as a race, so that if you said, for example, that you needn’t worry about my presence as I am no member of the Republican Party you could be arrested and face 6 months in jail. Imagine that if you could because you know it could never happen.

2. Hindu-Muslim clashes erupt in Delhi’s Trilokpuri area; Initial reports point toward former BJP MLA

Amritsar, Punjab: Clashes between Hindus and Muslims are reported from India’s capital Delhi. The communal clashes reportedly began in Trilokpuri area on Friday (Oct. 24) evening and were on till 24 hours later, leaving at least 13 people injured, including eight with bullet injuries.

On Saturday at least five persons sustained bullet injuries in a heavy exchange of gun fire between the two communities. Though prohibitory orders were imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC on Saturday night, security forces struggled to gain control, with clashes spreading to at least five blocks in the area. At least three of those injured are critical.

As the violence continued for third consecutive day a curfew was imposed and shoot at sight order was enforced.

3. Police, residents clash again over controversial mosque project

(There is clearly more to this story than is written here. Could this be the project that Erdogan promised last year or so, where a mosque was to be built on a site that is symbolic of Turkey’s secularism under Ataturk?)

Thank you M., and all who contributed to the site today.

  1. Boko Haram kidnaps 30 in northeast Nigeria (CNN, Oct 27, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/10/27/world/africa/boko-haram-abductions/index.html

“Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped at least 30 boys and girls from a village in northeast Nigeria during the weekend.

The abductions are the latest in a string of recent kidnappings by Boko Haram that dims hope for the anticipated release of 219 schoolgirls ?held by the group since April following a controversial ceasefire declared by Nigerian authorities.

Heavily armed Boko Haram gunmen invaded the town of Mafa, in Borno state, on Friday through Saturday and seized 30 boys and girls, local leaders said.

The news of the kidnappings was slow to emerge due to lack of telecom service in the region, where most telecom towers have been destroyed in Boko Haram’s five-year insurgency against Nigeria’s government….”

  2. 1/ I was taught that Worthy Oriental Gentlemen was what Kitchener told his men they had to call Egyptians, when he found them using Gypo and other less flattering terms. There appears to be scant support for that story on the all-knowing internet, alas. Maybe it’s true but against the law to remember it. That cocksure people for whom wogs began at Calais now live in fear of using even ‘the M-word’ in a manner their formerly-C compatriots might take offence at. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare…

  3. #1 Every nation where the left gains significant power turns authoritarian, if you know what to look for you can follow the progress in the news, while the US is behind Britain in limiting speech and thus thought the Dems are working hard to catch up and pass them.

#3 Your guess is probably right, the practicing Moslems will do all they can to remind everyone they are now in charge.

    • Far as I’m concerned, Turk – Salafist or secular – has yet to acknowledge the first “Genocide”, a term invented to describe their heinous crime.
Let ’em all burn in hell. [Times like this, I sure wish I could believe in hell.]

  4. CANADA – National News: Open letter from Tom Mulcair to the Muslim community

Official Opposition leader, Tom Mulcair, wrote an open letter to the Muslim community

    Dear Friends,

This has been a difficult and sombre week in Canada. We were all shocked by the terrible and violent events in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and in our nation’s capital, and we are united in mourning the deaths of two Canadian soldiers. We will not forget them and join with the Muslim community in sending our heartfelt condolences to their family and friends.

As we struggle to comprehend these terrible events, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Muslim brothers and sisters. We are all Canadian, and we have all been profoundly touched by this tragedy.

In the days and weeks to come, whether talking about protecting civilians in the Middle East, fighting racism and Islamophobia or ensuring rights are respected here at home, New Democrats can be counted on to stand up for human rights.

These horrific, cowardly acts will not intimidate us. We will not allow them to divide our great country – instead, we must ensure they bring Canadians closer together.

Moving forward, we will continue doing the hard of work of ensuring Canadians’ safety while guarding our shared values of freedom, tolerance and an inclusive democracy.

We join you in praying for peace and safety for all Canadians.

    Yours sincerely,

    Thomas Mulcair

    Leader of the Official Opposition
