(ANSA) – Rome, September 17 – Some 13 people were killed and 34 hurt in an attack at a teacher training college in the northern Nigerian city of Kano Wednesday, with Islamist group Boko Haram suspected.

The German government is alarmed about a growing number of its citizens carrying out suicide bombings on behalf of the “Islamic State” (IS) in Iraq and Syria, reports a research team including journalists from the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” newspaper as well as German broadcasters NDR and WDR. The team says it could confirm five separate attacks by Germans and is currently looking into a further three to four incidents.

The sexual exploitation of teenage girls was “endemic” in Sheffield during the early 2000s, a former care home worker has claimed.

She told the BBC that girls were passed around organised groups of men and trafficked to other cities.

[…]  She said her colleagues were powerless to stop the youngsters, aged between 13 and 14 years old, meeting groups of older men she said were of Asian heritage.

In one instance, she said a perpetrator rang the care home to describe the location of a girl who had been raped and left in a park.

    WASHINGTON — A wary Congress voted Wednesday to authorize President Obama’s mission to arm and train Syrian rebel forces as part of the administration’s effort to dismantle the threat posed by the Islamic State militant group.

    The bipartisan, 273-156, vote came after days of debate in which lawmakers across the political spectrum expressed doubts about the scope and merits of the mission but conceded that the potential threat to the U.S. is too great to ignore.

    House Passes Obama’s Plan to Arm Syrian Rebels

    The House on Wednesday passed a measure giving President Obama the approval he sought to train and arm Syrian rebels as part of war against the Islamic State.

    The 273-156 vote was broad and bipartisan, but opposition came from across the political spectrum over the course of six hours of debate. More Democrats voted against the president than Republicans, a rarity in the GOP-controlled House.

    Both Republican and Democratic leaders supported the proposal, while many conservative hawks and liberal doves voted no.

    The measure was structured as an amendment to a broader bill funding the government through December, which was expected to pass soon afterward. The Senate is expected to take it up as soon as tomorrow before lawmakers skip out of Washington and back to the campaign trail.

    With Congress not planning to consider granting Obama a full use of force authorization until after the November elections, the debate over arming the Syrian rebels served as a proxy for arguments over his more comprehensive strategy for defeating ISIS.

    Supporters argued that despite doubts lawmakers might have, Congress needed to send a message of national unity to allies and enemies alike.

    Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) spoke for many Republican critics of Obama when he said the U.S. was facing a threat “that has been ignored for too long and must no longer be tolerated.”

    I know that many of us in the chamber, from both sides of the aisle, believe the president’s strategy should do more to eradicate these extremists from the earth.
    But despite those reservations—reservations that I share—we must support this amendment and take this first step towards a comprehensive strategy to combat these brutal terrorists. Voting against this request would send a terrible message that America is unwilling to stand with those who are already fighting a common enemy, and confirm the views of many in the region that America is but a paper tiger.”

    Obama and top White House officials had lobbied aggressively for congressional backing in recent days, and they won the critical support of Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who urged Republicans to support it.

    Many Democrats gave their votes equally as reluctantly.

    “It’s not pleasant. Its not easy,” Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said. “It’s hard, but it really is necessary for the House to approve this.”

    Her chief lieutenant sent a similar message.

    “We know empirically, the cost of doing nothing is far too great,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat.

    Americans don’t want American men and women on the ground, but Americans do want ISIL confronted.”

    Hoyer said the House needed to send “a message to the world that we are united in our resolve to meet this threat.”

    But that argument did not win over a significant bloc of lawmakers on both sides, who said Obama’s plan to arm unknown rebels risked coming back to haunt the U.S.

    An Iraq war veteran, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), said he could not “vote for something that will not work.”

    Arming Islamists to fight other Islamists is not a winning strategy.

    We need to crush the Islamic State. We need to kill them. We need to burn the Islamic State to the ground. And you don’t do that by arming Islamic Syrians.”

    Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nev.) suggested Obama’s plan was one crafted out of desperation.

    This is a plan that is destined to fail for the sake of having said we did something. That is something I cannot support.”

  2. AUSTRALIA – SYDNEY – Terror raids disrupt ‘violent acts in Australia’

    A series of major pre-dawn counter-terrorism raids across Sydney and Brisbane on Thursday disrupted plans to “commit violent acts in Australia”, including against random members of the public, police said.

    “Police believe that this group that we have executed this operation on today had the intention and had started to carry out planning to commit violent acts here in Australia,” federal police chief Andrew Colvin said.

    “Those violent acts particularly related to random acts against members of the public.”

    Asked whether the planned violence involved the beheading of a member of the public, Colvin replied: “That allegation will relate to serious violence on a random member of the public here on the streets of NSW (the state of New South Wales).

    “Let’s let it run its course in court.”

    More than 800 officers were involved in the raids that police said were the largest of their kind Australia has ever conducted.

    They came barely a week after Canberra raised the terror threat level to “high” for the first time in a decade on growing concern about militants returning from fighting in Iraq and Syria.

    Some 25 search warrants were executed and 15 people were detained. So far one person has been charged with serious terrorism-related offences, police said.

    Asked if those held were related to the Islamic State jihadists, police said full details would emerge later Thursday during court appearances.

  4. Kosovo ‘imams held’ in raids on Islamic State recruitment

    Fifteen people have been detained in Kosovo in an operation aimed at tackling recruitment of fighters for Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq.

    Among them are several imams, including the head of Pristina’s Grand Mosque, Shefqet Krasniqi, local reports say.

    Some 200 Kosovo Albanians have gone to fight in Syria and several have died.

    IS is thought to have attracted hundreds of European recruits in its campaign to set up a “caliphate” in broad swathes of Syria and Iraq.

    Kosovo police did not name those arrested, publishing only their initials, but said the operation had been carried out following threats and due to the importance of national security.

    Many of those held were from Pristina, Prizren or the flashpoint town of Mitrovica.

    Islamist leader Fuad Raqimi was detained after a raid on his flat, reports said.

    US envoy Tracey Jacobson, in a tweet, praised Kosovo’s “pro-active response against fighters and terrorism”.

    Last month, 40 people were arrested as police searched dozens of sites across Kosovo, including makeshift mosques thought to have been used as recruitment centres.

    In common with other European governments, Kosovo is tightening up its laws to tackle the rise in jihadists travelling to the Middle East.

    Germany announced on Friday that it would seek to prosecute anyone who tried to recruit for IS or spread the group’s propaganda.

    French MPs on Tuesday backed a new anti-terror bill that would enable the passports of potential jihadists to be confiscated.

    Six people were detained in the Lyon area of France on Wednesday, including a 13-year-old girl, on suspicion of playing a part in sending young girls to Syria.

  5. UK -Rotherham – [ Muslim ] train pervert caught on camera by the teenage victim he molested

    A TEENAGE student who was molested by a pervert on a train used her mobile phone to take a photograph of him which she gave to the police.

    Within 24-hours officers from British Transport Police had tracked down and arrested 39-year-old Raja Hussain in the child sex scandal town of Rotherham.

    But the opportunist attacker escaped jail because he is of previously good character.

    Hussain pleaded guilty to sexual assault and was given an eight-month jail term, suspended because of his previous good character, and an ASBO, banning him from trains for three years.

    Sarah Smith, defending, said there was no premeditation and Hussain was suffering from poor mental health at the time.

    He had lost his “highly respectable” job due to his mental health problems which included depression with psychotic features, hallucinations and delusional beliefs.
