1. Egyptian media applauds Israel’s Gaza offensive

(It is great to start a post with something this surprisingly positive)

Since the beginning of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, much of the Egyptian media has laid the blame squarely on the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the tiny Palestinian enclave.

Some journalists have even said that all Palestinians are to blame for their current plight. […] Azza Sami, a writer for government daily Al-Ahram, went so far as to congratulate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Twitter: “Thank you Netanyahu, and God give us more men like you to destroy Hamas!”

2. Rape victim’s chatroom warning

THE victim of a disturbing rape as a 12-year-old is urging youngsters not to visit online chat rooms. Samantha Roberts (20) was raped by Shakil Chowdhury, 36 at the time, when she was 12. She met him on a chatroom for 13 to 19-year-olds called “Teen Chat”.

(With all respect and sorrow for Ms. Roberts, the warning should be never to trust a muslim you meet on a teen chat room. Not that you shouldn’t interact with other kids. Also notice what the main police concern is)

3. A friend of ours living in Sderot sent some footage last night of what can be heard to be some heavy fighting, audible from his home. There are several clips put together here but not edited at all, other than clips stitched together, in terms of time. So the frequency of explosions you here is what the residents are hearing. Before he started his camera, MC reported also hearing drones, helicopters and machine gun fire. By the time the camera started the fighting had moved farther away but you still get a solid sense of it in this clip.

I added the graphical aids to give a sense of scale. Thank you MC for doing this.

4. Bill Maher discusses the Gaza-Israel conflict. Its quite interesting. I might add, ignoring pop-culture opinions is a bad idea in this day and age when pop-culture trumps truth every time. So its quite wonderful when, as in this clip, truth and pop-culture overlap overall.

5. Chris Jones in the comments asks the following question:

One thing I don’t understand is why our society seems to tolerate rioters throwing rocks by calling guys like this a “protesters”, while he is plainly not protesting but rather fighting and attacking. Chucking a big rock into a crowd could literally kill somebody so it should be treated as a very serious assault or attempted murder. If Western leaders don’t want our societies to degenerate into so many Gaza Strips they need to start doing their jobs and putting guys like this away for for some good long prison stretches. Someone has to tell these vicious monkeys that civilized people don’t settle their differences by throwing rocks and screaming like animals…

6. Detroit Police Chief credits private gun ownership for decline in crime rate

Thank you Buck, M, Richard, MC, and all who sent in material. More to come.

  1. Tunisia orders crackdown on mosques

Tunisia on Saturday launched a crackdown on mosques and radio stations associated with hardline Islamists after militants killed 14 soldiers in an area near the country’s border with Algeria.

The move underscores the difficulty one of the Arab world’s most secular countries faces in dealing with the rise of conservative Islamist movements and militants

[…]Some of the militants are tied to al Qaeda and 14 soldiers were killed this week when dozens of gunmen with rocket-propelled grenades attacked two army checkpoints in the region

“The prime minister has decided to close immediately all the mosques that are not under the control of the authorities, and those mosques where there were reported celebrations over the deaths of the soldiers,” the office of Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa said in a statement.

It said the government would also order the closure of radio stations, websites or television stations that publish messages from militant groups. More than 60 Islamists linked to militants had also been arrested since the attacks on the army checkpoints, the statement said.

  2. “Egyptian media applauds Israel’s Gaza offensive”

I remember reading that during the Eichmann trial, Egyptian state radio bemoaned that the Nazis had not killed more jews.

    • If there was one thing that Mohammad Abdallah hated more than anything else, it was Jews. The reason he hated Jews so much is because he particularly wanted them to join his ridiculous religion but they didn’t fall for it because they were too well educated and intelligent to fall for anything that stupid. Add that to the fact that some Jews were observed making humorous comments and writing humorous poems about Mohammed’s obviously made-up “revelations”. For some reason our modern world seems to be incapable of grasping that simple fact.

I guess Hell hath no fury like a prophet scorned…:)
