    After 16 years, the poster country for “21st Century Socialism” has overwhelmingly rejected the experiment. Venezuelans yesterday voted to eject their socialist leaders, handing a 59% mandate to the Opposition. The vote mirrors Argentina’s earlier swing away from a party that enforced idealistic but ruinous economic policies.

    The cold hard numbers of science haven’t spurred the world to curb runaway global warming. So as climate negotiators struggle in Paris, some scientists who appealed to the rational brain are enlisting what many would consider a higher power: the majesty of faith.

    It’s not God versus science, but followers of God and science together trying to save humanity and the planet, they say.

    Physicist John Schellnhuber, founder of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, said he has been coming to these international talks for 11 years and essentially seen negotiators throw up their hands and say “sorry guys we tried our best.” And no one protested. But this time, with the power of Pope Francis’ encyclical earlier this year calling global warming a moral issue and an even more energized interfaith community, Schellnhuber feels the world’s faithful are watching and will hold world leaders accountable.

It described it as a routine rotation in an existing training program to help Iraqis retake Mosul from Islamic State, and said the troops were there to ensure the safety of the Turkish military trainers.

    But the Iraqi government said the latest deployment had been made without informing or coordinating with Baghdad, and should be withdrawn. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday that Iraq might turn to the U.N. Security Council if the troops were not withdrawn within 48 hours, describing their deployment as a violation of national sovereignty…”

    “NATO has ruled out sending ground troops to fight against Islamic State militants in Syria, NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg told a Swiss newspaper, stressing the need to bolster local forces in the conflict.

    “That is not on the agenda of the coalition and the NATO allies,” he told the Tages-Anzeiger paper when asked about dispatching ground forces to accompany air strikes.

    “The United States has a limited number of special forces. In the foreground, however, is strengthening local forces. This is not easy, but it’s the only option,” he added

    Stoltenberg stressed that the conflict was not a war between the West and the Islamic world, but rather against “extremism and terrorism”.

    “Muslims are on the front line in this war. Most victims are Muslims, and most of those who fight against the IS are Muslims. We can not carry on this struggle for them,” he said.

    Stoltenberg pointed out that NATO would help Turkey improve its air defenses after Turkey shot down a Russian military jet last month. The alliance will adopt a package of measures for Turkey before Christmas, he added.”

    • NATO doesn’t have the personal to send, without a large strong US Army the NATO forces are very limited in number.

        The Turk’s consistently undermined this wretched coalition; he’s nobody’s ally. Remember how our sailors were abused last year while they were on leave in Turkey?

        Turk figures he can just move soldiers into Iraq, because his sugar-daddy 0 will make it ok. Delusional. Iran might just get some proxy of theirs in Iraq to kidnap them – or us!

        Merkel and Hollande don’t want any part of this maneuver. Merkel, explicitly denying the Turk access to reconnaissance, and Hollande cooperating with Uncle Vlad. Who’s got his own agenda, but that’s another story.

        That crunching sound is Nato with its US legs kicked out from under it. RIP.

        • I have always said that NATO would be one of the causalities of this war, it was created to keep the French in the Russians out and the Germans down. Degaulle pulled France out, the Soviet Union fell and Germany was reunited. NATO succeeded in only one of its three goals and when my father heard about Germany reuniting he said that in 20 to 30 years we would have to fight them again.

        • For decades the left in Europe has been cutting their military relying on the US to protect them, now the US has a President who hates all whites and things Europe should be colonized by Third Worlders. Now the people who have been voting for the left are discovering that no leftist is to be trusted and that they are in deep do do because of their refusal to live in the real world.

    “Iran’s cyber police chief said on Monday officers had arrested 53 people for running websites supporting the Islamic State militant group (IS), Tasnim news agency reported.

    Shi’ite Muslim power Iran said last month it had broken up a cell recruiting fighters for the hardline Sunni Muslim group in Kermanshah, a western province close to the Iraqi border.

    The area has a large Sunni Kurdish population that has risen up against Tehran in the past

    The cyber police chief, Kamal Hadianfar, said most of those arrested had been based “in provinces near border areas”, without specifying where.

    IS has seized swathes of territory in both neighboring Iraq and also in Syria, where Iran has sent security officers to help President Bashar al-Assad’s forces battle the militants.

    Iran’s semi-official Students News Agency ISNA said the arrests had taken place in the past 20 months and that some of those arrested had been released.

    “Among those arrested, the cases of those who confessed … were referred to the judiciary while some whose involvement were based on their unawareness (of what they were doing were released),” ISNA quoted Hadianfar as saying.”

    “Police in southern Italy have arrested an Iraqi man who allegedly recruited fighters to send to Iraq and has ties to a group backing the so-called Islamic State.

    Police say that Majid Muhamad, 45, arrested in Bari on Monday, is under investigation for aiding and abetting clandestine immigration by procuring false documents.

    Investigators allege Muhamad belongs to Ansar Al-Islam, a group considered close to al-Qaida and then with Islamic State.

    According to police, Muhamad served 10 years in an Italian prison after being convicted of association for the purpose of terrorism. After his prison release, he successfully appealed an expulsion order.

    A search of a Bari home earlier this year found documents investigators say link Muhamad to a Molenbeek, Brussels, imam arrested by Italian police in 2009 for suspected terrorism.”

    “Germany has registered 964,574 new asylum-seekers in the first 11 months of the year, putting it on course for more than a million in 2015.

    The number of migrants arriving has not slowed despite the winter cold, with a record high of 206,101 in November.

    German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in August that the country expected 800,000 asylum-seekers over the year.

    Documents leaked in October suggested the government was privately anticipating the arrival of up to 1.5m.

    Germany has registered more asylum-seekers than any other nation in Europe, although at about 1% of its population, less per capita than several smaller nations.

    Registered asylum seekers are not always accepted however, and rates of success vary from country to country. Fewer than 10% of applicants last year in Hungary – which has one of the highest shares of asylum-seekers in Europe – resulted in a positive decision.

    The rate in Germany was 42%, while in Sweden – which registered the highest number of applications per capita – it was 77%. Across the EU, the success rate about 45%…”

    “The triumphant leader of the far-right National Front (FN), Marine Le Pen, says French voters rejected the “old political class” in regional elections that put her party top.

    Nearly one-third of voters backed the anti-immigration FN, which won in six out of France’s 13 regions.

    Despite the FN surge, a second round on 13 December will be the decider.

    It was the first electoral test since last month’s Paris attacks, in which jihadist gunmen killed 130 people.

    The nationalist FN got about 28%, ahead of the centre-right Republicans party led by former President Nicolas Sarkozy, which polled just under 27%, and the governing Socialist Party (PS), trailing with 23.5%.

    The PS said it was withdrawing from the second round in two regions, in the north and south, to try to block a run-off victory for the FN…”

    UN aid chief Stephen O’Brien said suffering in the world had reached levels not seen in a generation, with 87 million people needing urgent help.

    The crises in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan and Yemen were expected to remain top humanitarian priorities next year.

    More than $3.2bn alone is required to help people inside Syria and $4.8bn to assist refugees in neighbouring states.

    The UN also warned that humanitarian organisations were approaching the end of this year with less than half of the $19.9bn appeal for 2015 funded by donors.”

    “Egypt’s military destroyed in November 2015 a total of 20 smuggling tunnels connecting the Egyptian border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip in November 2015, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir said in a statement on Monday.

    The army said that the nationwide search patrols made in November 2015 lead to the confiscation of 478 weapons of various types and 530 assorted ammunitions including a large amount of explosive material.

    The military provided a map of areas where the weapons were seized, including Matrouh near the Libyan borders, Siwa Oasis located south of Matrouh, Ismailia at the west bank of the Suez Canal, the Red Sea’s Zaafrana, and other areas.

    The spokesperson also announced the arrest of 610 illegal migrants of various nationalities during the same month.

    The statement included a map showing where the illegal migrants were apprehended. These areas included Matrouh, Saloum, Siwa Oasis and Raas El Hekma near the Libyan border, and Al Qusair on the Red Sea.

    The destruction of smuggling tunnels connecting the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip with the Sinai Peninsula is one of several counter-terrorism initiatives taken by the Egyptian government in recent years.

    Egypt sees the tunnels as a passageway for arms and militants it has been fighting in North Sinai, posing a risk to the country’s security.

    In October 2014, the Egyptian military said it had destroyed a total of 1,813 tunnels in Sinai since 2011.”

        My Russki’s son emailed his Dad that his trip to Turkey for the holidays was cancelled the same night the soldier was shot down in his parachute. He hasn’t made other plans yet, but he wrote that he wouldn’t go if it cost him nothing, under the circumstances.

        • Putin and the Russian people want to make Russia a major power in the world once again, if the US is to be replaced as the dominate power (I think we will regain that title and retain it for a long time) Russia is a more likely replacement then China.

      • Putin is also thinking about how disruption in Turkey will spread chaos in the Middle East and cause the price of oil from that region to increase, this will give the European nations a motive to stop the sanctions and buy oil they need from Russia. Played right this hand of international poker will give Russia more money then the sanctions has cost them.

    The Syrian government said on Monday four warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition bombed a Syrian army camp in Deir al Zor province, which would be the first known attack by the coalition against government forces.

    Three soldiers were killed and 13 wounded the Syrian government said. It called the attack an act of aggression.

    The jets fired nine missiles at the camp on Sunday evening, Syria’s foreign ministry said in a statement flashed on state television. It is the first publicly declared incident of its type since the United States and allied countries began bombing the militant group Islamic State in Syria more than a year ago.

    Syria’s foreign ministry sent letters to the U.N. secretary general and to the head of the U.N. Security Council condemning the “flagrant aggression … which goes firmly against the aims of the U.N. charter,” state news agency SANA said.

    It urged the United Nations to take “immediate action and take the necessary measures to prevent a repeat” of the incident.

    An Iraqi man has been arrested in the southern Italian city of Bari on suspicion of smuggling jihadists into the country and planning terrorist attacks across Europe.

    Majid Muhamad, 45, is accused of assisting people linked to international terror cell Ansar al-Islam to get into Europe, including providing them with accommodation and fake passports.

    The man, who was released from an Italian prison in 2013 after serving a 10-year prison sentence on international terrorism charges, had won an appeal against a deportation ruling and managed to integrate himself in Bari social community. He rented an apartment and even opened a kebab shop, which quickly became a meeting hub for other migrants.

    Muhamad was arrested after Digos, Italy’s anti-terror squad, intercepted his telephone calls with members of Ansar al-Islam in Norway. It emerged that the group was planning terrorist attacks in other European countries.

  16. NY Daily News: San Bernardino victim deserved to die for being conservative

    A bad week for American journalism just got worse. On Thursday, New York’s Daily News ran a full page headline related to the mass killings in San Bernardino that was so callous and inappropriate it would have led to multiple firings at a reputable newspaper.

    The next day, the paper doubled down on its yellow journalistic practices only to be matched by hordes of reporters who trespassed on the home of terrorists Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, tainting a federal crime scene.

    But the Daily News wasn’t quite done. On Saturday, the paper went all in, publishing a column by veteran reporter Linda Stasi that argued amazingly that one of the San Bernardino shooting victims was just as bad as the killers by virtue of his being outspoken in his criticism of Islamic extremism on Facebook.

    • They’ve gotten used to slandering Israel, smearing yellow stars over their yellow journalism. Same tactics may not wash here.

      • It is causing a backlash that should scare the left but they are so use to nothing happening they are ignoring it.

    A German court convicted parents who murdered their own daughter for bringing “shame” to the family and sent them to jail for life. The honor killing of Lareeb Khan, 19, was carried out by her father Azadullah, 52 while her mother Shazia, 42, watched.

    The parents became incensed after receiving a letter from the police saying Lareeb had tried to shoplift condoms but was only given a warning and would not be prosecuted.

    Lareeb, a dental technician, who was described as a “bright and talented” young woman, had fallen in love with a 23-year-old man named Raheel of whom Lareeb’s parents disapproved. She was described as being completely assimilated into Western culture and spoke perfect German. Her parents had intended to arrange a marriage for her from their native Pakistan.

  30. RUSSIA – 3 injured in blast at Moscow bus stop

    The home-made bomb was thrown at a group of people who had been standing at the bus stop, sources told RIA Novosti.

    Three women sustained injuries in the explosion, Interfax reported.

    “Two women were taken to hospital with shrapnel wounds while the third victim suffered minor cuts and was given medical assistance on the spot,” sources told TASS, adding that the injuries of the pair in hospital are not life-threatening.

    Police have launched an investigation into a case of hooliganism.

  31. CNN – Trump: Ban all Muslim travel to U.S.

    Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump called Monday for barring all Muslims from entering the United States.

    “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,” a campaign press release said.

    Trump, who has previously called for surveillance against mosques and said he was open to establishing a database for all Muslims living in the U.S., made his latest controversial call in a news release. His message comes in the wake of a deadly mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, by suspected ISIS sympathizers and the day after President Barack Obama asked the country not to “turn against one another” out of fear.

    “Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine,” Trump said in a statement. “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.”

    Trump’s comments are likely to roil the Republican presidential race, forcing many of his opponents for the nomination to engage in a debate over whether there should be a religious test to enter America. But they may do little to dent Trump’s own popularity among Republican primary voters. The billionaire businessman has dominated the GOP contest for months despite repeated controversies that would likely sink other White House hopefuls.

    Trump’s campaign added in the release that such a ban should remain in effect “until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

    The release pointed to an online poll from the controversial Center for Security Policy, which claimed that a quarter of Muslims living in the U.S. believe violence against Americans is justified as part of a global jihadist campaign. Critics have questioned the reliability of the organization’s information. It also pointed to a Pew Research poll, which the campaign declined to identify, which the campaign claimed points to “great hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population.”

    Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told CNN on Monday that the ban would apply not just to Muslim foreigners looking to immigrate to the U.S., but also to Muslims looking to visit the U.S. as tourists.

    “Everyone,” Lewandowski said when asked if the ban would also apply to Muslim tourists.

    “Great surveillance and vigilance must be adhered to,” said Trump in an additional statement Lewandowski provided to CNN. “We want to be very fair but too many bad things are happening and the percentage of true hatred is too great. People that are looking to destroy our country must be reported and turned in by the good people who love our country and want America to be great again.”

    Lewandowski declined to answer multiple questions about what the shutdown on Muslim immigration would mean for Muslim Americans and Muslims already living in the U.S. legally.

    Obama administration condemns proposal

    Obama’s deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes reacted to Trump’s call Monday on CNN, calling it “totally contrary to our values as Americans” and pointed to the Bill of Rights’ protection of freedom of religion and pointing to the “extraordinary contributions” Muslim Americans have made to the U.S.

    Mitiku Kassa, head of Ethiopia’s disaster relief operation, said Monday that the government is currently distributing its own emergency food aid because pledges made by donors have not yet been delivered. He said there hasn’t been loss of life due to the drought so far.

    Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen estimated that the drought will continue well into 2016 and cited lack of transportation and food supplies as major obstacles.

    John Graham, Save the Children’s Country Director in Ethiopia, said in a statement that Ethiopia is experiencing its worst drought in 50 years and $1.4 billion in aid is needed to adequately respond to the emergency.”

    “A US air strike killed a senior leader of the Islamic State (IS) group in Libya, the Pentagon has confirmed.

    Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt Jeff Davis said Abu Nabil died after an F-15 jet targeted a compound in the eastern city of Derna on 13 November.

    Iraqi national Nabil was also known as Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al-Zubaydi.

    The Pentagon also said an air strike in Somalia on 2 December had killed a senior al-Shabab leader, Abdirahman Sandhere – also known as Ukash.

    US officials said the 13 November strike against Nabil had been authorised before terrorist attacks in Paris that evening that IS claimed responsibility for.

    “Nabil’s death will degrade Isil’s (IS) ability to meet the group’s objectives in Libya, including recruiting new Isil members, establishing bases in Libya, and planning external attacks on the United States,” the Pentagon said at the time.

    US officials said that Nabil may have been the IS spokesman pictured in a February 2015 video showing the apparent murder of Coptic Christians in Libya…”

    “France’s prime minister has urged voters to back the main opposition to stop the far-right National Front (FN) winning regional elections.

    The anti-immigration party did well in Sunday’s first round of the elections.

    PM Manuel Valls said there was a “choice between two visions of France” and said the FN “divides the French, tries to pit one against the other”.

    His Socialist Party (PS) has withdrawn from the second round in two regions to unify the anti-FN vote.

    Marine Le Pen’s FN came first in six of 13 regions in the first round.

    However, Nicolas Sarkozy, who leads the centre-right Republicans, has ruled out a similar tactic for his party in the second round.

    Both Mr Valls and Mr Sarkozy faced disagreement from within their parties over how to respond to the FN’s surge.

    “The best way to oppose the FN is by taking our seats in the regional assembly,” Jean-Pierre Masseret, the PS leader in the eastern region, told French TV station BFMTV.

    Meanwhile former prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, from the Republicans urged his party’s leader to copy the PS strategy.

    “When you are third, you pull out. You create a front against the destructive force,” he said.

    Ms Le Pen condemned the PS for withdrawing some candidates from the second round, saying the PS was “neither loyal nor democratic” and was “treating its voters like ballot fodder”.

    Jones claimed he fled al-Shabab because of rifts within the rebel group, said an official with Somali security forces who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. Jones is missing the index finger of his right hand, said the official.

    The arrest of the American comes amid signs of increasing tensions within al-Shabab between Somali and foreign fighters and over whether the insurgents should stay aligned with al-Qaida or should switch allegiance to the Islamic State group…”

  39. PHILADELPHIA – Caretaker Finds Severed Pig’s Head Outside Philly Mosque

    A gruesome discovery outside a North Philadelphia mosque has sparked a police investigation. A caretaker at the Al Aqsa Islamic Society told police he found the bloody, severed head of a pig outside the mosque around 6 a.m. Monday when he showed up to set up for morning prayer services.

    Surveillance video at the building, which is located on 1501 Germantown Avenue, shows a person inside a red pickup truck driving past the mosque and throwing an object out of the vehicle’s window Sunday night, according to investigators. Police are investigating the incident and are speaking to witnesses.

    Philadelphia Mayor-elect Jim Kenney released a statement on the incident early Monday evening.

    “The bigotry that desecrated Al-Aqsa mosque today has no place in Philadelphia,” he said. “The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection has a long history of coming together in the face of challenge. We cannot allow hate to divide us now, in the face of unprecedented difficulties. I ask all Philadelphians to join me in rejecting this despicable act and supporting our Muslim neighbors.”

    Every year, a few names on TIME’s ‘Person of the Year’ list are bound to raise some eyebrows. The “Today Show” anchors unveiled TIME’s shortlist for 2015 live on Monday morning.     “Decades of reckless arms trading and the poorly regulated flow of weapons into Iraq have contributed to the Islamic State group’s accumulation of a “vast and varied” arsenal which is being used to commit war crimes on a massive scale in Iraq and Syria, an international rights group said Tuesday.

    Amnesty International’s report, based on expert analysis of verified videos and images, says most of the extremist group’s weapons, ammunition and equipment were looted from the Iraqi army. It says the weapons were manufactured and designed in more than two dozen countries, including Russia, China, the U.S. and EU states.

    IS swept across Iraq in the summer of 2014, capturing the second largest city, Mosul, and taking weapons left behind by fleeing Iraqi security forces, including U.S.-supplied arms and military vehicles. The extremist group has also snatched arms from Syrian forces after capturing military bases there.

    “The vast and varied weaponry being used by the armed group calling itself Islamic State is a textbook case of how reckless arms trading fuels atrocities on a massive scale,” said Amnesty researcher Patrick Wilcken.

    “Poor regulation and lack of oversight of the immense arms flows into Iraq going back decades have given IS and other armed groups a bonanza of unprecedented access to firepower,” he said.

    The rights group said the weapons have allowed IS to carry out a “horrific campaign of abuse,” including “summary killings, rape, torture, abduction and hostage-taking — often carried out at gunpoint.”

    IS has proudly posted videos showing its fighters beheading journalists, captured soldiers, Syrian rebels and alleged spies. IS militants have also forced women and girls from Iraq’s Yazidi religious minority into sex slavery.

    Amnesty said the range and scope of the group’s arsenal reflects decades of “irresponsible” arms transfers to Iraq. It also faulted a lack of oversight following the 2003 invasion, when the United State spent billions of dollars arming and training Iraqi security forces. “Lax controls over military stockpiles and endemic corruption by successive Iraqi governments have added to the problem,” it said.

    The report documents the extremists’ use of arms and ammunition from at least 25 countries. Among the advanced weaponry in the IS arsenal are man-portable air defense systems, or MANPADS, guided anti-tank missiles and armored fighting vehicles.

    It said most of the conventional weapons being used by IS fighters date from the 1970s to the 1990s, when Iraq was engaged in a massive military buildup ahead of and during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

    Iraq was placed under a U.N. arms embargo after Saddam Hussein’s troops invade Kuwait in 1990, but that was lifted after the U.S.-led invasion. By 2014, Washington had delivered more than $500 million worth of small arms and ammunition to the Iraqi government, Amnesty said.

    Amnesty International called on all states to adopt “a complete embargo” on Syrian government forces and armed opposition groups “implicated in committing war crimes.” It said any state transferring arms to Iraq should invest heavily in controls, training and monitoring in order to meet international standards.”
