      By Cristina Laila Mar. 13, 2023 11:31

Credit Suisse shares tumbled to a new record low on Monday after Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank collapsed.

The Swiss bank fell as much as 15% after taking losses for five straight quarters.

      Market Watch reported:

Credit Suisse shares on Monday reached a new record low, falling as much as 15% as investors continued to hammer away at the stock of the Swiss banking giant after the collapse of banks in the U.S.

While SVB Financial and Signature Bank collapsed in the wake of the downturn in the technology and crypto sectors as interest rates rise, Credit Suisse’s difficulties have been of its own making.

Credit Suisse CSGN, -8.73% CS, -4.70% has lost money for five straight quarters and says it’s expecting to post a loss before tax this year. It’s undergoing a big transformation after losing billions lending to the Archegos family office and having to freeze $10 billion worth of funds tied to Greensil Capital. Wealthy clients pulled out about $100 billion from Credit Suisse in the fourth quarter.

According to FactSet, Credit Suisse shares trade at 0.2 estimated 2023 tangible book value. Rival UBS UBS, -4.03% trades at 1.2 times estimated 2023 tangible book value.

Credit Suisse was not the only European bank to see its shares slide: Commerzbank CBK, -12.31% and Banco de Sabadell SAB, -11.12% also slumped, as the broader European bank stock index SX7E, -6.05% fell.

Charles Schwab and dozens of other banks halted trading on Monday.

    • Barney Frank, the Namesake of the Behemoth Dodd-Frank Legislation, on Board of Failed Signature Bank
      By Joe Hoft Mar. 13, 2023 9:30 am225 Comments

Signature Bank, the firm that went under over the weekend, has an expert on its Board of Directors – Barney Frank.

Barney Frank was the US Rep behind the Dodd-Frank bill put in place after the 2008 bank crash. The government arguably caused the failure and then turned around and put in a massive amount of regulations in response to the failure.

The monstrosity was the Dodd-Frank bill, named in part for Barney Frank.

Frank left the House and was assigned to the Board of Signature Bank. This bank was little known until a couple of years ago when the bank decided to kick President Trump out of the bank by closing his accounts. This was a political move and it has now come back to haunt the bank.

Signature Bank was bailed out by the Biden Administration over the weekend. It must have been serious or it wouldn’t have been done over the weekend.

The great Barney Frank sits on the Board of Signature Bank and no doubt had a part in removing President Trump’s accounts. The bank board that was nasty in politics was apparently horrible in running the bank.

Bob Bishop shared on Twitter the relationship between Barney Frank and Signature Bank:

    • Crypto Scours the Globe for Banks to Replace Collapsed US Lenders
Suvashree Ghosh, Sidhartha Shukla and Sarah Zheng

Bloomberg) — Crypto hedge fund executive Marco Lim spent Monday racing to open bank accounts in Hong Kong after the sudden collapse of three US lenders.

The hedge fund, MaiCapital, is based in the city and had cash at one of the fallen institutions, Signature Bank. MaiCapital needs alternatives and managing partner Lim was pressing lenders to speed up account opening.

“The two biggest crypto friendly banks are gone,” Lim said, referring to Signature and Silvergate Capital Corp., which also had many crypto clients and said Wednesday it would liquidate. “I’ve been through too many crises.”

Silvergate, Signature and Silicon Valley Bank were toppled in the past few days amid bank runs, spurring the US to introduce a new backstop to shield deposits. The loss of Silvergate and Signature is particularly grievous for digital assets as the two operated real-time, seven-days-a-week payments networks for the crypto industry, aiding the flow of money to and from the sector.

Many crypto firms are now combing for banks outside the US, with lenders in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates among those in the spotlight. This tilt away from America had already begun due to growing regulatory heat there after the implosion of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX digital-asset exchange.

      • Barney Frank blames crypto panic for his bank’s collapse. Elizabeth Warren blames Trump.
The rift between Frank and Warren is just a preview of what’s to come as Democrats sort out positions on how to respond to the latest banking crisis.

Former Rep. Barney Frank and Sen. Elizabeth Warren — two key architects of the post-2008 system of Wall Street regulation — are at odds over what’s dragging down banks once again.

Frank, who chaired the House Financial Services Committee in the wake of the global financial crisis and wrote sweeping new rules enacted in 2010, most recently served on the board of New York’s Signature Bank, which regulators shut down Sunday.

From his front-row seat, he blames Signature’s failure on a panic that began with last year’s cryptocurrency collapse — his bank was one of few that served the industry — compounded by a run triggered by the failure of tech-focused Silicon Valley Bank late last week. Frank disputes that a bipartisan regulatory rollback signed into law by former President Donald Trump in 2018 had anything to do with it, even if it was driven by a desire to ease regulation of mid-size and regional banks like his own.

“I don’t think that had any impact,” Frank said in an interview. “They hadn’t stopped examining banks.”

    • Billionaire Hedge Fund Boss Bill Ackman Demands Biden Guarantee All Deposits or Economy will Melt Down – Steve Bannon Responds (Video)
      By Jim Hoft Mar. 13, 2023 12:59 pm117 Comments

Billionaire Hedge Fund boss Bill Ackman demanded Joe Biden guarantee ALL bank deposits or the economy could face a meltdown.

Steve Bannon responded to Ackman’s demands on Friday.

On Monday’s War Room Steve had more to say about the proposed billions in bailouts that will stick the Deplorables with the bill.

      The Daily Mail reported:

Hedge fund boss Bill Ackman today warned the ‘economy will not function’ unless Joe Biden ‘guarantees all deposits now’ as the contagion spread to the Big Four.

Among the worst affected regional banks was Western Alliance which saw its stock plunge by 75 percent as the opening bell sounded. Trading circuit breakers were also imposed on First Republic as its price nosedived by two thirds and PacWest which dropped by 35 percent.

Major US banks also suffered with Wells Fargo plummeting 7.5 percent, Bank of America falling 7.4 percent, Citigroup plunging 5.8 percent and JP Morgan down 2.7 percent.

‘Our economy will not function effectively without our community and regional banking system. Therefore, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation needs to explicitly guarantee all deposits now. Hours matter,’ Ackman warned

  3. Tens of Thousands of Dutch Farmers Protest in The Hague: “Resist Much, Obey Little!”
By Richard Abelson Mar. 13, 2023 8:45 am

Tens of thousands of Dutch citizens came out to protest the WEF-inspired campaign against Dutch farmers on Saturday in The Hague, under the motto “Vote Them Out”. Local elections will be held on Wednesday, as the upstart Farmer’s Party BBB looks poised to trounce the ruling party of RINO Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The Dutch government has made itself the headquarters of the disastrous World Economic Forum Food Innovations Hub and wants to ban the use of nitrogen in fertilizer, bankrupting thousands of Dutch farmers and expropriating their land, in some cases even using that land to house illegal migrants instead.

The Dutch farmers are some of the best farmers in the world. The tiny country of the Netherlands has become the world’s second-largest agricultural exporter just behind the United States. The Netherlands are smaller than the state of West Virginia.

The protest was organized by Dutch Farmers Defense Force and Together for Netherlands, who wanted 5000 tractors to converge on the capital of The Hague in a show of solidarity. Four days before the protest, the mayor of the Hague Jan Van Zanen limited the number to two tractors and threatened to call in the Army against his own people. Nonetheless Saturday’s protest was a peaceful, joyous, family-friendly affair. The Dutch and international media completey ignored it or smeared the citizens as “far-right”, proving once again they are “the enemy of the people” (Donald Trump).

In her rousing speech, Dutch activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek said:

“Our country was born out of resistance against tyranny, against Spanish tyranny. Now, almost five centuries later, we are again fighting against tyranny, against a corrupt and unjust government that excludes dissidents and drives our farmers from their land. Back then, this injustice came from Madrid. Now, it comes from right here, (the Dutch capital) The Hague. And that is the worst kind of injustice. Our government has launched an attack on our own people, on one of the hardest-working, most successful and inspiring groups or all, the farmers and citizens of the Netherlands!

  4. NYT – March 13 2023 – Elizabeth Warren: Silicon Valley Bank Is Gone. We Know Who Is Responsible.

No one should be mistaken about what unfolded over the past few days in the U.S. banking system: These recent bank failures are the direct result of leaders in Washington weakening the financial rules.

In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act to protect consumers and ensure that big banks could never again take down the economy and destroy millions of lives. Wall Street chief executives and their armies of lawyers and lobbyists hated this law. They spent millions trying to defeat it, and, when they lost, spent millions more trying to weaken it.

Greg Becker, the chief executive of Silicon Valley Bank, was one of the ?many high-powered executives who lobbied Congress to weaken the law. In 2018, the big banks won. With support from both parties, President Donald Trump signed a law to roll back critical parts of Dodd-Frank. Regulators, including the Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, then made a bad situation worse, ??letting financial institutions load up on risk.

Banks like S.V.B. ?— which had become the 16th largest bank in the country before regulators shut it down on Friday ?—? got relief from stringent requirements, basing their claim on the laughable assertion that banks like them weren’t actually “big” ?and therefore didn’t need strong oversight. ?

I fought against these changes. On the eve of the Senate vote in 2018, I warned?, “Washington is about to make it easier for the banks to run up risk, make it easier to put our constituents at risk, make it easier to put American families in danger, just so the C.E.O.s of these banks can get a new corporate jet and add another floor to their new corporate headquarters.”

I wish I’d been wrong. But on Friday, S.V.B. executives were busy paying out congratulatory bonuses hours before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation?? rushed in to take over their failing institution — leaving countless businesses and non?profits with accounts at the bank alarmed that they wouldn’t be able to pay their bills and employees.

S.V.B. suffered from a toxic mix of risky management and weak supervision. For one, the bank relied on a concentrated group of tech companies with big deposits, driving an abnormally large ratio of uninsured deposits?. This meant that weakness in a single sector of the economy could threaten the bank’s stability.

Instead of managing that risk, S.V.B. funneled these deposits into long-term bonds, making it hard for the bank to respond to a drawdown. S.V.B. apparently failed to hedge against the obvious risk of rising interest rates. This business model was great for S.V.B.’s short-term profits, which shot up by nearly 40 ?percent over the last three years? — but now we know its cost.

S.V.B.’s collapse set off looming contagion that regulators felt forced to stanch, leading to their decision to dissolve Signature Bank. Signature had touted its F.D.I.C. insurance as it whipped up a customer base tilted toward risky cryptocurrency firms.

Had Congress and the Federal Reserve not rolled back the stricter oversight, S.V.B. and Signature would have been subject to stronger liquidity and capital requirements to withstand financial shocks. They would have been required to conduct regular stress tests to expose their vulnerabilities and shore up their businesses. But because those requirements were repealed, when an old-fashioned bank run hit S.V.B?., the? bank couldn’t withstand the pressure — and Signature’s collapse was close behind.

On Sunday night, regulators announced they would ensure that all deposits at S.V.B. and Signature would be repaid 100 cents on the dollar. Not just small businesses and nonprofits, but also billion-dollar companies, crypto investors and the very venture capital firms that triggered the bank run on S.V.B. in the first place — all in the name of preventing further contagion.

Regulators have said that banks, rather than taxpayers, will bear the cost of the federal backstop required to protect deposits. We’ll see if that’s true. But it’s no wonder the American people are skeptical of a system that holds millions of struggling student loan borrowers in limbo but steps in overnight to ensure that billion-dollar crypto firms won’t lose a dime in deposits.

These threats never should have been allowed to materialize. We must act to prevent them from occurring again.

First, Congress, the White House? and banking regulators should reverse the dangerous bank deregulation of the Trump era. Repealing the 2018 legislation that weakened the rules for banks like S.V.B. must be an immediate priority for Congress. Similarly, ?Mr. Powell’s disastrous “tailoring” of these rules has put our economy at risk, and it needs to end — ?now. ?

Bank regulators must also take a careful look under the hood at our financial institutions to see where other dangers may be lurking. Elected officials, including the Senate Republicans who, just days before S.V.B.’s collapse, pressed Mr. Powell to stave off higher capital standards, must now demand stronger — not weaker — oversight.

Second, regulators should reform deposit insurance so that both during this crisis and in the future, businesses that are trying to make payroll and otherwise conduct ordinary financial transactions are fully covered — while ensuring the cost of protecting outsized depositors is borne by those financial institutions that pose the greatest risk. Never again should large companies with billions in unsecured deposits expect, or receive, free support from the government.

Finally, if we are to deter this kind of risky behavior from happening again, it’s critical that those responsible not be rewarded. S.V.B. and Signature shareholders will be wiped out, but their executives must also be held accountable. Mr. Becker of S.V.B. took home $9.9 million in compensation last year, including a $1.5 million bonus for boosting bank profitability — and its riskiness. Joseph DePaolo of Signature got $8.6 million. We should claw all of that back, along with bonuses for other executives at these banks. Where needed, Congress should empower regulators to recover pay and bonuses. Prosecutors and regulators should investigate whether any executives engaged in insider trading ?or broke other civil or criminal laws.

These bank failures were entirely avoidable if Congress and the Fed had done their jobs and kept strong banking regulations in place since 2018. S.V.B. and Signature are gone, and now Washington must act quickly to prevent the next crisis.

  5. Fox News – Researchers identify this mammal as latest potential cause of climate change, suggest balancing species

The study suggests moose are contributing to climate change

Researchers claim that moose are potentially a leading cause of climate change and that the species should be balanced, suggesting they are “one of the biggest potential single sources of carbon emissions from wooded parts of Norway.”

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology studied moose in Norwegian forests for several years and concluded that the species have a major effect on vegetation growth and are altering the carbon cycle by dining on tree buds. “Moose are an ecosystem engineer in the forest ecosystem, and strongly impact everything from the species composition and nutrient availability in the forest. A grown animal can eat 50 kilograms of biomass each day during summer,” Gunnar Austrheim, an ecologist at the NTNU University Museum, said in a press release.

Moose tend to eat birch and young samplings in clearcut forests, an act researchers claim is where the ungulates “gobble up” possible carbon storage in trees.

“It was really a surprise to see how much moose can influence vegetation growth, the carbon cycle and the climate system,” said Xiangping Hu, a researcher at NTNU’s Industrial Ecology (IndEcol), said in the release.

The study also claimed that moose were not only bad for the climate but aided the forest industry.

The solution suggested to the latest climate change theory was to balance moose numbers and forest management in an effort to limit CO2 emissions. “We don’t only regulate the amount of animals, we very carefully regulate the proportion of females, males and calves. So there’s a stronger management for moose than for most livestock in Norway,” Francesco Cherubini, director of IndEcol Programme said. “I think as we get more of an understanding of how all these different things are interrelated, land managers could come up with an optimal plan. That could be a much-needed win-win solution for climate, for biodiversity and for timber value.”

The moose is not the first animal on climate activists labeled a potential threat to the climate after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) linked “farting cows” to causing climate change.

In 2019, the congresswoman suggested “we shouldn’t be eating a hamburger for breakfast, lunch, and dinner” in her effort to reduce carbon emissions coming from cows.

“We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero, emissions in 10 years because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast,” Ocasio-Cortez’s FAQ page for the Green New Deal read.

University of Michigan – Francis Medal recipient says nations must learn from pandemic

      https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FrIUEMZX0AUxJLS?format=jpg&name=medium

As cases of COVID-19 across the globe begin to decline and nations begin to recover, it is crucial to learn from the mistakes made throughout the pandemic to better prepare for the future.

That is what Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, urged everyone to consider as he accepted the University of Michigan’s Thomas Francis Jr. Medal in Global Public Health on March 13.

Tedros, the first African and nonphysician director-general of the WHO, led the global public health organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said he is confident COVID-19 will no longer be considered a public health emergency of international concern by the end of the year. What is most important now is to learn from the pandemic and plan for the future.

“It’s vital that we all make an honest assessment of the pandemic and learn its lessons, so we don’t repeat the same mistakes again,” said Tedros, pointing to three key lessons of the pandemic.

The first is the importance of a strong public health system. Tedros called on all countries at all income levels to invest in public health and primary health care.

The second lesson is the importance of science. Tedros said that throughout the pandemic, science provided experts with the tools to understand how the virus spreads and how to stop it.

However, he said, the politicization of science impeded the response to the pandemic and cost lives. Tedros said there is a moral imperative, for the sake of those lost, to trust the science and help all communities protect themselves against COVID-19.

The third lesson is the importance of cooperation. Tedros said the COVID-19 pandemic was characterized “by lack of cooperation and coordination” due to nations failing to put together a coherent and cohesive global response.

He said an international negotiation is needed to create accords that will guide a global response to future epidemics and pandemics.

“The challenges we face in global health can seem daunting. No single country or agency can address these challenges alone. But when we work together, we can overcome anything,” Tedros said.

The ceremony took place before an in-person audience at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business’ Robertson Auditorium and those watching via a YouTube livestream.

Named after renowned U-M virologist and infectious disease expert Thomas Francis Jr., the medal comes with a $50,000 award and is one of the university’s highest honors. It is given periodically to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of global health and helped to establish a healthier future for their society.

Tedros is the fourth person to receive the award. Previous recipients include Sir Fazle Hasan Abed in 2016, Alfred Sommer in 2010, and William Foege in 2005.

Born in Eritrea, Tedros was first elected WHO director-general in 2017 and reelected in May 2022. Before joining WHO, he was minister of foreign affairs in Ethiopia and, previously, was minister of health.

President Santa J. Ono said he was proud of U-M’s legacy of groundbreaking research to fight diseases, and it will continue to serve society through excellence in research, education and service to help battle future threats.

“Global inequities and emerging diseases continue to threaten, steal and destroy our common well-being,” Ono said. “Today, we’re applying tools unimaginable decades ago to address new threats and new challenges to public health.”

Following Tedros’ speech, Matthew Boulton, Pearl L. Kendrick Collegiate Professor of Global Public Health, professor of global public health and of epidemiology, and senior associate dean for global public health in the School of Public Health, moderated a panel highlighting collective actions to improve overall global health.

Along with Tedros, the panelists included:

Paul Fleming, assistant professor of health behavior and health education, School of Public Health.

Joneigh Khaldun, adjunct professor of health management and policy, School of Public Health; vice president and chief health equity officer for CVS Health, former chief medical executive for the state of Michigan; former member of the White House COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force.

In a rare interview, the Meta Platforms CEO and his pediatrician wife, who are co-CEOs of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, discuss their plans to use technology to deepen understanding of human cells and tissues—and the impact they want it to have on human health.

Six and a half years ago, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, announced a $3 billion commitment to basic science research over a decade, including $600 million to create a biomedical research hub in San Francisco in collaboration with researchers from the University of California at San Francisco, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University. In late 2021 they promised another $3.4 billion toward science.

A collaboration among Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Chicago Biohub will work to better understand how human tissues function, using tiny sensors it will develop.

In an exclusive interview that took place just weeks before Chan’s due date for the couple’s third child, Zuckerberg and Chan, both now 38, sat down with Forbes last week to discuss the new Biohub and how their support of science research differs from the traditional model. They also talked about their very lofty goals regarding curing or managing all diseases.

Much of their scientific giving is built around the idea that better tools, paired with a deeper understanding of human biology, can help accelerate finding cures for diseases, managing them or preventing them altogether. “If you look at the history of science, most big advances are preceded by new tools to observe things, not just in biology but [also] with telescopes and supercolliders,” Zuckerberg explains.

Chan and Zuckerberg initially conceived of biohubs as a way to jump-start the development of such tools and discoveries. Unlike typical academic research labs backed by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Chan Zuckerberg biohubs would partner with universities to take on big questions they wouldn’t tackle on their own, collaborate across scientific disciplines and come with a promise of at least a decade of funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

The first CZ Biohub, founded in 2016 and located across the street from UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus, has been working in two broad areas: creating systems that detect and respond to infectious disease, and furthering understanding of how healthy and diseased human cells work. Six months after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the U.S., the CZ Biohub and UC San Francisco released a study led by Biohub co-president Joe DeRisi, an infectious disease specialist and professor at UC San Francisco, of the BinaxNow rapid Covid-19 tests–which confirmed that the tests were reliable. That study helped spur wider adoption of rapid tests in the Bay Area and California, says DeRisi.

Now, members of DeRisi’s team are working on a potentially faster, cheaper and more accurate way to diagnose malaria—a disease that kills more than 600,000 people a year (mostly children), using a microscope equipped with ultraviolet light and machine learning algorithms that detect malaria in a patient’s blood sample, explains Paul Lebel, a CZ Biohub engineer who designed and built the microscope. Several of the specialized microscopes are currently part of a trial at a clinic in Uganda that is run by a team from UC at San Francisco.

To better understand the role of human cells, researchers at the CZ San Francisco Biohub, led by Stephen Quake, a professor of bioengineering at Stanford and the head of science for CZI, joined a consortium that has assembled a first draft of the human cell atlas—nearly 500,000 cells from 24 human organs. The atlas “tells us what all the different cells in your body are doing in healthy and sometimes diseased states,” explains Chan. “That is only possible when you bring together a large community, where you put concerted efforts . . . to build that comprehensive resource.” Quake notes that each of the research papers for the human cell atlas have a whopping 160 authors on them. CZI has provided funding for the project overall.

The early successes of the first biohub inspired Chan and Zuckerberg to expand—and double down on their philanthropic science efforts. To that end, in December 2021, CZI announced that Chan and Zuckerberg would invest up to $3.4 billion more over 10 to 15 years. Of that amount, $1 billion will go to the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network. “We knew we wanted to do more of these,” says Chan. “The question was where and what.” For the second biohub, 58 proposals (collaborations among universities) came in from across the U.S., and with help from a committee, Chan and Zuckerberg narrowed that down to 8 semifinalists, all of which, says Chan, had “something that we’d be excited to fund and be a part of.” The decision to choose Chicago came down to the strength of its proposal and the fact that these universities had previously shown that they could collaborate, Chan and Zuckerberg say.

To lead the Chicago Biohub, Chan and Zuckerberg selected Shana O. Kelley, a professor of chemistry and biomedical engineering at Northwestern who has focused on sensors and sensor technology, and has cofounded four companies based on technologies that have come out of her research. (One, Geneohm Sciences, was acquired by medical technology firm Becton Dickinson in 2006 for a reported $230 million.) Her expertise on sensors is tied to the groundbreaking work that the Chicago Biohub aims to tackle.

“The idea is to take human tissues and embed thousands of sensors into them, to make a completely new kind of measurement,” Kelley says via Zoom from Chicago. The experiments will use small samples of human tissue collected with consent during surgical procedures. Next, says Kelley, they will “watch what’s happening with cells and tissues–watch them communicating with one another to understand what happens when a tissue goes from being normal to being inflamed,” with the goal of comprehending how inflammation works and how it drives disease. More than 50% of deaths are attributed to diseases with some form of inflammation, she points out. The first experiments will start with skin tissue.

The three universities each contribute an area of expertise to the Biohub, says Kelley: Northwestern is strong in sensing, the University of Chicago excels in inflammation and in quantum sensing, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign researchers have developed microfabrication systems and the ability to make miniaturized devices, which will be needed for making the ultra-tiny sensors.

“It’s hard to explain how excited people are here—that we’re going to have a Biohub, that we’re going to have the opportunity to work on these really important problems,” Kelley beams. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime. This is the opportunity to do science the way we’ve always wanted to do it, with the constraints removed and the creativity just allowed to flow.”

Some of the typical constraints to research are the time and effort it takes to apply for funding. And some of the cutting-edge work that the Chicago Biohub will take on might not have gotten money from the National Institutes of Health. “To get NIH funding you need to have a lot of preliminary data—and you have to have an idea that everybody agrees with,” says Kelley. “That doesn’t happen very often, especially with weird, out-of-the-box ideas that have the potential to be transformative.”

Chan, who attended medical school at UC San Francisco and worked as a pediatrician before cofounding and becoming co-CEO of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, explains that their science philanthropy is, relatively speaking, small. “Science funding is a huge field and the NIH is the biggest player–they fund billions and billions of dollars every year. We’re always going to be tiny,” she says. “In all of our philanthropy we have to look for the niche that’s a good fit for what we bring to the table.”

The power couple first announced plans in 2016 to cure, manage and prevent all disease by the end of the century. Their goals haven’t changed since then, but their messaging is perhaps more tempered. “Mainly, we think it’s possible, and I generally just think it’s good to shoot for ambitious things,” Zuckerberg says about why they picked that goal. But then he quickly explains: “To be clear, we don’t think that we’re going to do this. The goal is to build tools so that way progress in the whole field can be accelerated.” That’s still a tall order.

The biohubs are just one part of the CZI’s science activity. Last September Chan and Zuckerberg marked the launch at Harvard University of the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural and Artificial Intelligence–named after Zuckerberg’s mother, Karen Kempner Zuckerberg, and supported with a $500 million pledge over 10 to 15 years to operate it. Later this year, the couple will open the Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging in Redwood City, California, and have allocated from $600 million to $900 million to support that institute over a decade. In all likelihood, there will be more biohubs. Quake, the Stanford professor who is head of science for CZI, is tasked as part of his job with launching new biohubs; he declined to say how many more are planned.

Science is also just one part of what the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative funds —though it is the biggest piece, in terms of dollars and people. The other broad areas are education and supporting communities in the Bay Area—with programs that address housing affordability and homelessness. Back in December 2015, to mark the birth of their first child, Chan and Zuckerberg pledged to direct 99% of their Facebook (now called Meta Platforms) stock over the course of their lives to “further the mission of advancing human potential and promoting equality by means of philanthropic public advocacy and other activities for the public good.” At the time, that was a $45 billion promise. Meta’s stock is now 65% more valuable, making their pledge worth more like $74 billion, $3.9 billion of which they’ve already dispensed, through both the CZI Foundation and through donor-advised funds. (CZI is set up as a limited liability company, which provides less transparency than a typical private charitable foundation.)

How do Zuckerberg and Chan fit the CZI co-CEO work into their schedules? This is Chan’s full-time job—though she does still maintain her pediatric credentials and sometimes volunteers in that capacity. Her aim, she says, is to look at “how we do what we do better, in terms of our skill sets. And how do we continuously iterate and get better at solving the problems that we’re working on. It’s been awesome.” Says Zuckerberg, who’s got his hands full as CEO of Meta Platforms, which has faced a decline in ad revenues and laid off 11,000 employees late last year: “I spend a bunch of time on this, but it’s probably at the level of any of the major organizations that I’m overseeing. So, I might spend as much time on this as I spend on WhatsApp or Instagram”

As exciting as all the scientific discovery is, one thing that Chan and Zuckerberg haven’t mentioned in their vision to cure or manage all disease are the complexities of delivering the treatments that will be discovered. The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the gaps in healthcare and the public health system in the U.S. and elsewhere. “People tend to think that the tough part is the basic science part. Unfortunately, there isn’t an appreciation of what needs to happen thereafter,” says Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, a professor of epidemiology and medicine at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. “Whether it’s a technology or a test or a medicine, it’s understanding who wants it, how can they get it, how can they afford it, how can they trust it. There are so many different steps.”

Dr. Gary Désir, a physician-scientist and the chair of internal medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, points out the limited role that medical treatments play in the outcome of major diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease–typically just 20%, according to public health experts. “Exercise and eating well and not doing things that are detrimental to your health—those three things drive the major outcomes of chronic disease. The impact of medicine is actually quite limited,” says Désir. He also points out that different people respond differently to the same medical treatments based on their zip code. “It has to do with income, education, the environment where you live–whether it is polluted or not,” he explains. “You’d make a lot of progress [in reducing disease] by getting rid of poverty and feeding people.”

Jeff MacGregor, a spokesperson for CZI, explains that the mission of CZI’s science efforts is to support the science and technology that would make it possible to cure, prevent or manage all disease–but that it often gets shortened to just the last part. “We’re not necessarily experts in global health,” says MacGregor. “Our focus in the larger ecosystem is on basic science and technology.”

CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE – MARCH 2023 – Closing Plenary: Taking Action Together

The CGI community is united in its commitment to taking action together.

Over the course of the year ahead, there is an opportunity for our actions to not only help address the global challenges we face today, such as rising health and economic disparities, but also to lay the groundwork for a reimagined spirit of partnership and action that is more diverse, equitable, and inclusive than ever before.

If the challenges of the past and the last several years of the COVID-19 pandemic have taught us anything, it’s that we are better when we work together, we are more resilient when we support all our community members, and we are most effective when we coordinate and disburse our shared resources.

As we go forward to take action, the question becomes: how do we affirm our common humanity, develop deep and cross-cutting partnerships, and center the lived experiences of those on the frontlines of our global challenges at the heart of our collective work?

    • Patriarch Kirill slams Kiev decision to expel UOC monks from monastery

The Patriarch urges heads of local orthodox churches, Pope Francis, and the UN to “exert all possible efforts” to prevent the expulsion.

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow on Sunday slammed Ukraine’s National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve’s order to expel the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) clergy from the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery.

The Patriarch called on heads of local orthodox churches, Pope Francis, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and other religious leaders and representatives of international organizations to “exert all possible effort” to prevent the expulsion.

On Friday, Ukraine’s National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve announced that it had ordered monks of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate to leave the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, one of the most important Orthodox Christian monasteries by March 29, claiming a breach of contract.

“The Reserve warns of the avoidance of the contract on March 29, 2023. In order to conduct the procedure of receiving and transferring the state property, the Monastery must vacate buildings and facilities that are state property and on the balance sheet of the Reserve,” a statement read.

Ukraine’s inter-institutional working group on religious organizations has allegedly registered a breach of contract on using state property by the Monastery, the Preserve claimed.

Ukrainian Ministry of Culture to audit Kiev Pechersk Lavra after evicting monks
In the same context, the Ukrainian Minister of Culture Alexander Tkachenko also confirmed that the Ministry will organize an audit of museum exhibits, including holy relics, in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra following the departure of representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

“I would like to stress for the record that further to real property, museum exhibits are also there – over 800 pieces, including holy relics that were transferred to monks for the use, so to say. There will be an audit in respect of them, to see how they are preserved,” Tkachenko indicated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry warned in early February that Ukraine’s persecution of the UOC could result in the largest intra-confessional conflict in modern European history.

It is noteworthy that in early January 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree stripping 13 priests of the UOC of their Ukrainian citizenship.

On November 24, 2022, the Russian news agency Interfax reported that the Ukrainian Parliament registered a bill calling for the imposition of a nationwide ban on the UOC.

According to the European Solidarity Party, the bill would ban any institutions or organizations which are in part or totally affiliated to the Russian Orthodox faith from carrying out religious activities “in canonical, organizational and other issues.”

Moscow Patriarchate to leave all premises of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

The Ukrainian government terminated the agreement with the Russian-controlled Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) on the free use of religious buildings located in the Lower Lavra, a part of Ukraine’s most significant Orthodox monastery.

The UOC-MP’s church members must leave the Lower Lavra’s premises by March 29, according to a statement published by Culture Ministry on March 10.

Earlier, the Ukrainian state didn’t extend the Russian-affiliated church’s lease of another part of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra called the Upper Lavra, starting the process of regaining control over the monastery.

In 2013, during the presidency of ousted Viktor Yanukovych, the Kremlin-linked patriarchate signed a lease agreement on the use of Lower Lavra’s buildings in central Kyiv for an indefinite period.

President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government started checking the legality of the UOC-MP’s lease on the Lower Lavra in early December, finally concluding that the church had violated the contract’s terms, the Culture Ministry’s statement reads.

Apart from the Moscow Patriarchate, the premises of the Lavra are also used by a museum.

The UOC-MP has faced backlash in recent months due to its deep and long-standing ties to Russia, as well as the discovery of Russian passports, anti-Ukrainian propaganda, and stolen icons during nationwide raids on its religious sites. Searches have also taken place at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

Despite claiming independence from the Russian Orthodox Church in May and condemning the ongoing war in Ukraine, the UOC-MP remains subordinated to Moscow in the hierarchy of the Orthodox world.

On Dec. 1, Zelensky announced the start of a procedure to ban activities of the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (“pecherska” means “cave”), founded in 1051, is one of the first monasteries in Kyivan Rus. It belonged to the Ukrainian branch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople until 1688 when it was annexed by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Since 1688, the Lavra has been used for Russian imperial propaganda.

The independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine on Jan. 7 held a Christmas service at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra for the first time.

  9. Mice born from two fathers could take human reproduction into new territory

Scientists in Japan say they have succeeded in breeding mice with two fathers, using eggs originating from male cells. While the scientific breakthrough could pave the way for new fertility treatments, experts say it is still a long way from being used in humans.

Katsuhiko Hayashi, a renowned biologist at the University of Osaka, said his team had used chromosomal engineering to breed seven “healthy” mice pups, hailing a “first case of making robust mammal oocytes (eggs) from male cells”.

Hayashi made the announcement at the Third International Summit on Human Genome Editing at the Francis Crick Institute in London on March 8, prompting a flurry of excitement and speculation about the discovery’s implications for the future of human reproduction.

The study’s results have been submitted for publication in the scientific journal “Nature.” If confirmed, they would mark a “small revolution”, said Dr. Nitzan Gonen, head of the Sex Determination Lab at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv.

Biologists and geneticists have been working towards this feat for more than a decade, hoping to develop new treatments for severe forms of infertility or even allow for single-parent embryos.

  10. Stanford Univ Issues Apology for Disgusting “Equity and Diversity” Dean Who Ambushed and Bullied Trump-Appointed Judge During Speech He Was Invited To Give To Immature Law Students Who Shouted Him Down [VIDEO]
    By Patty McMurray Mar. 13, 2023 1:50

100 Percent Fed Up reports – On Thursday, Judge Duncan showed up at Stanford University, where he was scheduled to speak to a group of Stanford University Law School students, only to find out the disrespectful students had no interest in listening to him speak and were only there to disrupt his speech. Judge Duncan was invited to speak to the Stanford Law students by the Stanford Chapter of the Federalist Society. The invitation to the speech that appeared on the Stanford Law School website read: The Fifth Circuit in Conversation with the Supreme Court: Covid, Guns, and Twitter

You’ve got to give him a lot of credit. Most judges who refuse to support the Left’s dangerous radical ideology wouldn’t even entertain the idea of agreeing to speak at a woke university like Stanford. But Fifth Circuit Appellate Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan, who happens to be a Trump-appointed judge, bravely accepted the invitation of Stanford University to speak in front of its largely immature and single-minded population of law students

In the video below, the Fifth Circuit judge can be seen patiently waiting for a group of loud, obnoxious, and rude law students to leave the room so he could speak without being shouted down by them. As some of the students leave the room, they can be heard calling Judge Duncan a “racist” and other derogatory names

Sadly, things went from bad to worse for Judge Duncan when he asked for an administrator to help quell the chaos and was met with Stanford University’s bully associate dean of “diversity and equity,” Tirien Steinbach, who should never have been trusted to be placed in a position of authority by the university.
During her almost 10-minute monologue, Steinbach asks Judge Duncan, “Is the juice worth the squeeze?” When Judge Duncan, who appears completely baffled by her intolerance and ignorance, asks her to explain, she responds by asking if his discussion on Twitter, COVID, and guns with the students is so important that it’s worth triggering the other students at Stanford.

  13. Corrupt Lying Rep. Dan Goldman Says Hunter Laptop Is Russian Disinfo But None of These Articles Have Been Debunked?
    By Joe Hoft Mar. 13, 2023 2:25 pm1 Comment

Poor Daniel Goldman, the new Dem Rep from New York, is the lone survivor in the Hunter Biden laptop is Russian disinformation. This is utter nonsense.

Goldman, the creepy former lying attorney in Adam Schiff’s impeachment of President Trump because the President dared ask about the Bidens’ activities in Ukraine, believes that if he says the Hunter laptop is Russian disinformation, people will listen.

Last Thursday, there were hearings on Twitter and the Democrat, government, Big Tech, and Big Media complex known as the “Censorship Industrial Complex”, Goldman tried to insanely bring up that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russia misinformation.

Long after this lie has been debunked, Goldman wanted to bring it back to life.

So we ask which of these articles, texts, and pictures shared at The Gateway Pundit are “Russian information”. (TGP obtained information for these articles from a trusted source, who vetted the information directly from John Paul Mac Isaac and no one has even attempted to say that these documents are not Hunter’s from his laptop.)

So does Goldman believe the picture above was created by Russia? Where is his proof? We shared this in our post before the 2020 Election noting that Hunter was with Russians in the Los Angeles area at an exclusive mansion where sex acts were performed and Hunter placed his family at risk for Russian blackmail.

This morning, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene retweeted a short video of two disappointed young children after they were denied visitation with their father, Kyle J. Young this past Sunday. The tweet from Kyle Young’s wife states the family drove over 12 hours in hopes of seeing her husband and the father of the two children.

The federal prison in Arkansas that Kyle is held at permits visitation on both Saturday and Sunday. The family was allowed some visitation on Saturday, but on Sunday, they were turned away. No reason was given by the prison officials.

Kyle’s wife and two of their four children (the oldest is grown and living on their own) have only been able to visit him one other time previously, in January of 2022, since his incarceration. His son Jack, aged 3, was only 15 months old when Kyle was arrested and held in a maximum security side of the Warsaw Prison in Virginia. Kyle’s wife told The Gateway Pundit that he is the only J6 prisoner she knows of that was held in the maximum security wing of the prison. This is of course a much more difficult section of the prison to be living in and Young, who had not been convicted of anything at this time, was constantly in fear for his life.

    By Cristina Laila Mar. 13, 2023 4:20 pm2 Comments

The Federal Reserve on Monday announced Vice Chair for Supervision Michael S. Barr will lead a review of its regulatory failure of Silicon Valley Bank.

Silicon Valley Bank was in FDIC receivership on Friday after investors withdrew more than $40 billion in a run on the bank.

The events surrounding Silicon Valley Bank demand a thorough, transparent, and swift review by the Federal Reserve,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said in a statement.

The Federal Reserve Board on Monday announced that Vice Chair for Supervision Michael S. Barr is leading a review of the supervision and regulation of Silicon Valley Bank, in light of its failure. The review will be publicly released by May 1.” the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve announced Monday.

“We need to have humility, and conduct a careful and thorough review of how we supervised and regulated this firm, and what we should learn from this experience,” said Vice Chair Barr.

  18. Pope Francis approaches lifting ban on celibacy for Catholic priests, calling it ‘a temporary prescription’

Pope Francis recently suggested that the Catholic Church is now open to reconsidering its 1,000-year-old celibacy rules.

The act of celibacy was put into effect in the 11th century as a way to ensure the clergy’s money would stay within the church, instead of with their family, according to the Daily Mail.

The Vatican apparently enforces the rule among priests, but there has been growing pushback against the ban.

Germany’s Catholic Church voted for a resolution asking Francis to end the obligation for priests to remain celibate, according to the report.

    By Yaron Steinbuch

    March 13, 2023 | 9:38am

A United Airlines flight from New Jersey to Vermont sparked a massive emergency response Sunday after a disturbing note was found inside a bathroom.

Flight 3613 took off from Newark Airport at 3:14 p.m. with 65 passengers for a flight to Burlington International Airport, but 20 minutes before landing, the pilot was notified of a threat, WPTZ reported.

Authorities have not described the nature of the threat, but a passenger on the flight told the outlet that “someone left a note.”

The pilot notified air traffic control and a massive emergency response was launched at the airport, which was closed for several hours after the plane landed about 4:30 p.m. and was taken to an isolated spot on the tarmac.

Responding agencies included the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad, local police, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.

  21. Dem Presidential Wanna-be Candidate Gov Whitmer Hilariously Blames Data When Asked Why DOUBLE The Number of People In MI Died of COVID Compared to FL Where Lockdowns Were Lifted 10 Months Earlier
    By Patty McMurray Mar. 13, 2023 4:45 pm0 Comments

Big Gretch”—like Hillary Clinton, never seems satisfied with her current political position—she’s always looking to climb the ladder to the next role that will give her the most power.
100 Percent Fed Up reports – In 2020, at the peak of the COVID pandemic, Whitmer proved the damage she was capable of inflicting on Michigan citizens when she used authority she didn’t have via an executive order that was later deemed unconstitutional by the MI Supreme Court to lock down healthy citizens and destroy the economy in her state. At the same time she was taking a wrecking ball to Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer was auditioning for her next role as Biden’s vice president.

  22. Devout Catholic Joe Biden Calls for Federal Legislation to Block “Cruel” and “Close to Sinful” State Laws Protecting Children from Transgender Medical Abuse
    By Kristinn Taylor Mar. 13, 2023 4:43 pm14 Comments

Devout Catholic Joe Biden, whose daughter wrote in her diary about him taking inappropriate showers with her, said in an interview with Comedy Central’s The Daily Show released Monday that state measures like the one in Florida protecting children from abusive transgender medical treatment are “cruel” and “close to sinful” and called for a federal law to be enacted to block those state laws.

Obama spoke with gay comic actor and former Obama White House staffer Kal Penn.

“…and transgender kids is a really harder thing. What’s going on in Florida is as my mother would say, ‘close to sinful’. I mean, it’s terrible what they’re doing. It’s not like you know, a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I want to become a man’ or ‘I want to become a woman’ or ‘I want to change.’ I mean, what, what, what are they thinking about here? They’re human beings. They love. They have feelings. They have inclinations that are… I mean, it’s just, to me, is, I don’t know, it’s cruel. And the way we do it is we make sure we pass legislation like we passed with same-sex marriage. You mess with that, you’re breaking the law and you’re going to be held accountable.”

  23. Houston, TX- The Houston Police Department revealed Sunday that a Texas woman was left paralyzed after a suspect savagely attacked her during a robbery last month.

The HPD says that on February 13, 44-year-old Nhung Truong was body slammed by a Black man in his early 20s.

As reported by Fox News, Truong had made a withdrawal from a Bank of America on Blackhawk Blvd. The suspect spied on her from a distance and then proceeded to follow her for nearly 24 miles to a shopping center on the 9800 block of Bellaire.

Surveillance video shows the suspect sauntering up to Truong and then suddenly grabbing her. The victim drops all her items on the floor and the suspect steals what he presumed was an envelope of money and starts to run off.

  24. South Carolina Bill Would Label Abortions As Homicide — Make Participants Eligible for the Death Penalty
    By Cassandra MacDonald Mar. 13, 2023 5:45 pm166 Comments

A South Carolina bill is making headlines for seeking to make a person who gets or performs an abortion guilty of homicide.
Under the South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023, a person involved in an abortion could ultimately face the death penalty.

Rep. Rob Harris introduced the bill and currently has 21 cosponsors.

The legislation would redefine “person” to include a baby from the moment of conception. This would afford a fetus the same protections as a person who has been born, including capital punishment for their deliberate killing.

There is an exception for a pregnant woman who gets an abortion “because she was compelled to do so by the threat of imminent death or great bodily injury” or if it was the absolute only way to save the mother’s life and efforts to save them both have failed.

The bill would not have exceptions for cases of rape or incest.

The proposed legislation has been under fire from RINO Rep. Nancy Mace, who is taking a break from her seemingly singular focus on legalizing marijuana to complain about the bill.

“To see this debate go to the dark places, the dark edges, where it has gone on both sides of the aisle, has been deeply disturbing to me as a woman, as a female legislator, as a mom, and as a victim of rape. I was raped as a teenager at the age of 16,” Mace said. “This debate ought to be a bipartisan debate where we balance the rights of women and we balance the right to life. But we aren’t having that conversation here in D.C. We aren’t having that conversation at home. We aren’t having that conversation with fellow state lawmakers.”

The South Carolina Supreme Court previously ruled that banning abortions after six weeks was unconstitutional. For now, abortion is legal in South Carolina up to 21 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy.
