A massive spy balloon believed to be from China was seen above Montana and is being tracked as it flies across the continental United States, with President Joe Biden for now deciding against “military options” because of the risk to civilians, U.S. officials said on Thursday.
Still, officials insisted, they continue to closely monitor the vessel as they have since it entered the country — while voicing their concern to Beijing.
“The United States government has detected and is tracking a high-altitude surveillance balloon that is flying over the continental United States right now,” Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement on Thursday. “NORAD [North American Aerospace Defense Command] continues to track and monitor it closely.”
NORAD later said in a statement that its commander, Gen. Glen VanHerck, “assesses the balloon does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground at this time. The balloon is currently traveling at altitude well above commercial air traffic.”
The Canadian Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are working with NORAD and “other partners” to assess the situation, the agency said in a statement, adding that Canada is “taking steps to ensure the security of its airspace, including the monitoring of a potential second incident.”

Nicholas Malindretos, a 26-year-old Clifton man arrested today for attempting to firebomb a synagogue in Bloomfield last weekend, was a small dollar donor to a Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, records show.
Malindretos made a $27 online contribution to Sanders two days before the South Carolina primary.
Sanders is arguably the highest-profile Jew to seek the presidency; he won 23 states and 1,865 delegates against Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic primaries.
There is no other history of Malindretos’ political involvement and no evidence that he had any contact with the Sanders campaign.
Malindretos, who lives 3.7 miles from the synagogue, was working as a retail associate at PETCO at the time of his campaign contribution.

The balloon is 55 miles high, this is 5 miles below the edge of space. To shoot it down we would have to use an armed SR71 blackbird, we are suppose to have one that is armed. The question is do we want to spend the money to bring down a balloon that isn’t going to get any pictures that the spy satellites aren’t taking.
Do a cost benefit analysis and you discover shooting it down isn’t worth the effort.

Pilots are now reporting the Chinese spy balloon is floating a few thousand feet above them.
Via CNN: “DERELICT BALLOON ADRIFT” at 50,000 feet was just reported by the crew of a Cessna Citation private jet cruising at 43,000 feet near Kansas City.
Xi Jinping’s China spy balloon is making its way across the United States surveilling some of our most sensitive military installations.
According to reports, the high-altitude surveillance balloon flew over the Aleutian Islands, through Canada and ended up in Montana by Wednesday.
The crew of a Cessna Citation private plane then spotted the spy balloon a few thousand feet above the aircraft near Kansas City.

A NOAA air current model shows the China spy balloon is expected to traverse the United States heartland through the Midwest and Southern states on Friday before heading out to the Atlantic Ocean passing over the U.S. Navy base at Newport News, Virginia. Joe Biden refused to shoot down the balloon, however Secretary of State Antony Blinken cancelled a planned trip to Beijing in protest.
The NOAA HYSPLIT* model was used to reverse track the balloon from China. The balloon flew over the Aleutian Islands, then into Canada air space before crossing into U.S. airspace over Montana and a U.S. nuclear missile base on Wednesday.

On Friday, Hawley demanded Homeland Security to immediately launch an investigation into President Joe Biden’s lax response to the Chinese spy balloon.
I write to request that you expeditiously convene a hearing on troubling reports that the Chinese government has launched a surveillance balloon over the United States to spy on our nuclear capabilities,” Hawley wrote in a letter addressed to Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich).
He called the Biden Administration’s response to the discovery “baffling,” adding that there is an obligation as members of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to have full knowledge of the Chinese government’s surveillance of the U.S., calling it a “gross violation.”
China’s foray into America’s sovereign airspace is deeply disturbing and calls for an immediate investigation. This is a matter of homeland security, and we should hear from senior members of the Biden Administration to understand their response, or lack thereof, so far. The American people are demanding answers,” Hawley continued.
