    • reuters – U.S. says to defend “every inch” of NATO as nuclear planning group meets

BRUSSELS, Oct 13 (Reuters) – The United States reaffirmed its commitment to defend “every inch” of NATO territory ahead of talks among defense ministers from the alliance on Thursday that will include closed-door discussions by its Nuclear Planning Group.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made the remarks affirming America’s commitment to NATO’s collective defense following repeated nuclear threats by Russian President Vladimir Putin amid battlefield setbacks in his nearly eight-month-long invasion of Ukraine.

“We are committed to defending every inch of NATO’s territory – if and when it comes to that,” Austin said.

Austin spoke shortly before attending a meeting by NATO’s senior body on nuclear matters, which handles policy issues associated with the alliance’s nuclear forces.

NATO has not given details of the nuclear discussions taking place on Thursday. The alliance says its nuclear policy is under “constant review, and is modified and adapted in light of new developments.”

President Vladimir Putin has threatened the use of nuclear weapons since his military was beaten back on several fronts in Ukraine over the past month and Russia proclaimed the annexation of Ukrainian territories.

A senior NATO official said on Wednesday a Russian nuclear strike on Ukraine would “almost certainly be drawing a physical response from many allies, and potentially from NATO itself,” without elaborating.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said last month the United States has made clear to Moscow the “catastrophic consequences” it would face if it used a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

Sullivan did not publicly describe the nature of the planned U.S. response, however.

Diplomats say Moscow’s hints at the possible use of a tactical nuclear weapon to defend the annexed territories of Ukraine are aimed at scaring the West into reducing support for Kyiv.

On Thursday, Alexander Venediktov, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, was quoted by Russian media warning of World War Three if Ukraine were allowed to join NATO.

“Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to World War Three,” Venediktov said.

“The suicidal nature of such a step is understood by NATO members themselves.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced a bid for fast-track membership of NATO, but full NATO membership for Ukraine is far off because all the alliance’s 30 members would have to give their consent.

      NATO NUCLEAR EXERCISES

Meanwhile, NATO said it would go ahead with its annual nuclear preparedness exercise dubbed “Steadfast Noon” next week, in which NATO air forces practise the use of U.S. nuclear bombs based in Europe with training flights, without live weapons.

Cancelling the drills because of the war in Ukraine would send a “very wrong signal,” NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday.

Germany said more than a dozen NATO partners aim to jointly procure air defence systems that protect European allied territory from missiles, eyeing Israel’s Arrow 3 system, U.S. Patriot and German IRIS-T units among the options. read more

Nearly 50 countries gathered at NATO headquarters on Wednesday and committed to arming Ukraine through the winter and beyond, including with new air defenses, potentially preventing Russia from taking advantage of a slower winter to reset its forces.

Austin said on Thursday that support was opened-ended.

“We’re going to stay with our efforts to support Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Austin said alongside NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg praised the U.N. General Assembly’s condemnation on Wednesday of Russia’s “attempted illegal annexation” of four partially occupied regions in Ukraine.

“This just shows that we need to stand up for the rules-based international order, for our core values,” Stoltenberg said.

Thursday’s agenda at NATO headquarters in Brussels includes discussions on how to give a clear signal to industry to ramp up arms production both for internal needs, as well as to support Ukraine’s defense.

Allies will also discuss ways to improve protection of their critical infrastructure, after apparent attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines contributed to heightening tensions. It remains unclear who was behind the explosions under the Baltic Sea.

      • S.Korea Nudges U.S. to Share Tactical Nukes

The government has asked the U.S. to share tactical nuclear weapons in order to boost its defenses against North Korea.

A high-ranking government official said on Wednesday, “If North Korea pushes ahead with a seventh nuclear test, we will face a whole new level of threat. We are discussing with the U.S. ways to radically strengthen the U.S.’ extended deterrence to fit the changed security situation on the Korean Peninsula.”

The government has in mind the rotational deployment of strategic U.S. military assets near the Korean Peninsula such as an aircraft carrier group equipped with nuclear weapons or nuclear-powered submarines.

One security official here said, “What’s being discussed is a [South] Korean-style nuclear sharing scheme that could avoid triggering protests from neighboring countries and a regional nuclear arms buildup.”

But the White House and U.S. State Department have not commented on the issue and referred reporters to the South Korean government for comments.

Asked what the military alliance would do should Moscow launch a nuclear attack, Stoltenberg said, “We will not go into exactly how we will respond, but of course this will fundamentally change the nature of the conflict. It will mean that a very important line has been crossed.”

“Even any use of a smaller nuclear weapon will be a very serious thing … and of course that would have consequences,” he added.

He stressed, however, that the circumstances in which NATO might have to use nuclear weapons are “extremely remote.”

The meeting in Brussels came ahead of a planned NATO nuclear exercise, dubbed “Steadfast Noon,” next week. Russia is also expected to hold nuclear drills of its own in the near future.

    • G7 Agrees On Price Cap For Russian-Origin Oil And Related Products – What Companies Need To Know – Export Controls & Trade & Investment Sanctions

The G7 has announced consensus on a price cap for Russian
origin oil and petroleum products to be implemented across a wide
      coalition of countries.

The cap would be implemented by prohibiting services related to
the maritime transportation of Russian-origin crude oil and
petroleum products unless the products are purchased below the
capped price, and thus impacts a broad array of industries.

The capped prices have yet to be determined and are proposed to
be aligned with the implementation of restrictions in the EU’s
sixth sanctions package, which will reportedly go into effect by
      December 5, 2022.

Yellen says Russian oil price cap in $60 range would allow Moscow some profit

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Wednesday that a price cap on Russian oil exports in the $60-a-barrel range would likely be sufficient to reduce Moscow’s energy revenues while allowing profitable production.

Yellen told an event at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Washington that the United States and its Western allies are still discussing where to set the price for a capping mechanism meant to punish Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine while keeping Russian crude on the global market.

Backers of the cap, which would deny Western-supplied shipping insurance, finance other services to Russian oil cargoes above a specified price, aim to implement it on Dec. 5, as the European Union implements a phased ban on Russian crude.

Yellen said that Russia has been willing to produce and sell oil in the $60 range over the past five to seven years.

“So certainly a price in that range would be sufficient to feel that Russia could profitably produce and sell oil,” Yellen said, adding that Russia’s cost of production was “low.”

Russian Urals crude has recently traded at around $75 a barrel, or a $17 discount to benchmark Brent futures.

Yellen’s deputy Treasury secretary, Wally Adeyemo, told a conference in New York that Russia was trying to lock in contracts at prices far below the Brent price, a sign that price cap discussions were having some effect.

“The objective is to protect the world from the consequences of a global spike in oil prices,” Yellen said of the price cap.

She said the Treasury has been attentive to the dollar’s reserve currency status and does not want to become overly reliant on financial sanctions that could undermine it. But in the case of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there was a broad coalition of countries willing to take strong action, including sanctioning Russia’s central bank.

The bar for imposing such sanctions “is very, very high. To take an action with that level of seriousness, really we would only do when there’s very vocal support among a broad coalition of countries to do it.”

Biden administration officials are worried OPEC+ has undermined plans for a Russian oil price cap, report says

Officials in the Biden administration are signaling the plan to cap Russian oil prices could backfire, according to a report from Bloomberg.

OPEC+’s cut to its production quota last week could end up undermining the effort to cap prices, sources told Bloomberg. The cartel’s move has already added to volatility in markets, and a price cap on Russian oil could trigger a spike in crude, they said.

Officials also noted concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin could retaliate by slashing more supplies, sending prices higher. Putin has already signaled that the Kremlin will not sell oil to countries that participate in the price cap effort.

The US has been leading the effort on the Russian oil price cap, which would coincide with the European Union’s embargo on seaborne Russian oil imports that’s due to take effect on December 5.

The cap would essentially create a loophole in the EU embargo that would prevent a supply shock and price spike by allowing Russian supplies to keep flowing on global markets while also limiting the revenue Moscow can earn.

But OPEC+’s decision last week to slash its production quota by 2 million barrels per day drew a sharp rebuke from the White House, which accused the cartel of aligning with Russia.

Biden has also warned that de facto OPEC leader Saudi Arabia could face consequences, and his national security team said the president would re-evaluate relations with Riyadh in the wake of the OPEC+ meeting.

The OPEC+ production cut was also seen as a blow to Biden’s efforts to lower oil prices and get inflation under control after a summer visit to the Middle East and a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

    • RT – Ukraine behind attacks on Russian regions, FM admits to prank callers

Dmitry Kuleba “privately” claimed credit for explosions in Crimea and Belgorod

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister has admitted that Kiev is behind sabotage operations in Russia, many of which which have killed innocent civilians.

Dmitry Kuleba was speaking with a person he believed to be a former American ambassador to Moscow, according to Russian pranksters with a history of targetting senior political figures.

“Well, if you were to ask me who blows up things in Crimea or Belgorod, then speaking privately, as much privacy we can have in a Zoom call, I’d tell you, yes, that was us,” the top Ukrainian diplomat was shown saying in footage, which was released on Thursday.

The apparent admission was obtained by two Russian entertainers who go by the stage names Vovan and Lexus. They usually pose as foreign officials and trick their target into saying things that he or she would probably not want the public to hear.

During the conversation with Kuleba, the duo posed as Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Russia and a vocal critic of Moscow. Among other things, McFaul is involved in an advisory group that helps Kiev ensure continued support from Western governments.

The prank involved the fake former-diplomat asking Kuleba about Ukrainian intelligence agents, whom he assumed to be active in Russia.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Kuleba’s words an admission of criminality by the Ukrainian state. Kiev’s top diplomat “confessed to committing terrorism. And in such a way – ‘yes, that’s us.’ Not just the special services or individual saboteurs. The government, the state,” she said on social media.

The pranksters did not reveal the date of the conversation, but they discussed remarks that Zakharova made on September 1st and Kuleba’s travel plans for October, placing it sometime last month.

When discussing with ‘McFaul’ Crimea’s significance in Russia’s military operation against Ukraine, Kuleba called the region a “source of ammo” for Russian troops and “an air base for their warplanes.”

Destroying military sites in Crimea “has a direct impact” on the effectiveness of the Russian forces, he said. But the peninsula “is not the immediate operative target” for the Ukrainian military, he noted.

The foreign minister was also skeptical about engaging with nations in Africa in the context of Kiev’s conflict with Moscow.

“All of a sudden, our friends and partners, the US, the Europeans started a few months ago saying that working with Africa was super important, so that Africa was on our side,” he said.

Kuleba claimed that some African countries “have taken either an openly strictly pro-Russian position or a strictly neutral position. Those cannot be swayed, no matter how much time you spend.” He added that chasing the support of African leaders would motivate them “to profit from” the conflict in Ukraine rather than to take a position “based on facts.”

The minister reiterated Kiev’s calls for increased economic sanctions on Moscow, suggesting that the US and its allies impose restrictions on the Russian civilian nuclear industry. Kuleba urged for more weapons supplies, specifically asking for US-made Patriot long-range anti-aircraft missiles. He also discussed Kiev’s financial situation and how the government hoped that the IMF would provide more loans so that it could operate in the coming year.

On Columbus Day Monday, David Leavitt, who describes himself as an “award-winning multimedia journalist” on Twitter, urged his hundreds of thousands of followers to call child care services on a single mother and Virginia state senate candidate who said she teaches her daughter “real American history.”

The argument began on Sunday, when Tina Ramirez, a single mother and senate candidate for Virginia’s 12th District, posted to Twitter about PayPal allegedly saying that they would take $2,500 out of the accounts of people who spread “misinformation.”

“Only women can get pregnant,” the October 9 tweet read. “Do I owe PayPal $2500 now?”

In response, Leavitt wrote on the afternoon of Columbus Day, “Why are you celebrating torture, rape, murder, and enslavement?”

In response to Leavitt, Ramirez wrote, “I teach my daughter real American history. I refuse to join the radical left’s campaign to erase history.”

This tweet prompted Leavitt to request that his over 300 thousand followers call care cervices on the woman, writing, “Can someone please call child care services on Tina Ramirez who’s teaching her child to be a racist?”

Medicine to treat heart conditions can become unsafe when taken with Paxlovid

Coronary heart disease drugs prescribed with it mean a higher risk of blood clots

And alongside immunosuppressants it can cause plasma to rise to toxic level
    ——————————————
Pfizer’s flagship Covid drug can have dangerous interactions with common medications, a review has found.

Paxlovid gained emergency use authorization in the US in December last year as an antiviral drug to treat mild to moderate Covid in high-risk patients.

It has been given to millions of vulnerable Americans with underlying health conditions — reducing their risk of death by up to 90 per cent.

But Paxlovid can cause serious health problems when coupled with common heart disease medication such as statins and blood thinners.

Researchers from Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Harvard Medical School and other US institutions found the Covid drug can increase the risk of developing blood clots when taken with blood thinners.

It can also cause an irregular heartbeat when combined with drugs for heart pain and when taken alongside statins it can be toxic to the liver.

Dozens of medications such as aspirin are safe to take with Paxlovid, the researchers stress. But doctors need to be aware that other drugs can be dangerous and should be discontinued or adjusted while a patient is being treated for Covid.

When President Joe Biden, 79, tested positive for Covid and started Paxlovid in July, his physician Dr Kevin O’Connor temporarily stopped him from taking the statin Crestor and stroke prevention drug Eliquis.

Pfizer’s CEO Dr Albert Bourla, 60, also took a course of Paxlovid when he caught the virus in August

All beyond this which is strictly peculiar to War relates merely to the peculiar nature of the means which it uses. That the tendencies and views of policy shall not be incompatible with these means, the Art of War in general and the Commander in each particular case may demand, and this claim is truly not a trifling one. But however powerfully this may react on political views in particular cases, still it must always be regarded as only a modification of them; for the political view is the object, War is the means, and the means must always include the object in our conception.”
