Reader’s Links for July 5th, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Incentives like negative electricity rates and subsidies for energy efficient appliances can help Europe store up gas for the winter.

Negative oil prices were one of the craziest moments ever in the energy market. At one point in April 2020, a seller paid a buyer $40 for a barrel of West Texas Intermediate. We’re going to need another crazy moment if Europe is going to make it through the winter. How about this: Pay consumers not to consume electricity.

A year on into the energy crisis, policy makers have only tried supply measures in their attempt to address the problem. Their own words highlight the approach: “supply” and “production” got 28 mentions in last week’s communique of the Group of Seven summit; “demand” and “consumption” just five.

This is about to change: The best energy is that which we don’t consume. In Europe, officials are now working on a plan to fight the crisis, likely to be published in a couple of weeks, that’s going to focus on consumption measures. I expect to see a big emphasis on so-called “demand response.”

That involves consumers, mostly large companies, reducing or shifting their energy usage during peak periods in response to time-based rates or other financial incentives. The typical demand response measure is cheaper energy prices during low-demand periods — say, at night or weekends. But what I hear out of Brussels is an extreme form: Paying some companies to slow down their plants significantly, or even halt them, so they don’t consume electricity, and therefore help to keep the lights on for everyone else.

Saving electricity equals saving natural gas because a large chunk of power in Europe is generated by burning gas imported from Russia.

The UK is also exploring the idea. National Grid Plc is asking companies how many megawatts of power demand they would be able to cut next winter — and how big a payment they would ask for. It floated a price range for potential payments, ranging from £100 ($122) to £6,000 a megawatt hour. Current day-ahead power prices in the UK hover around £200 per mega-watt hour. Germany is mulling a similar system, based on an auction: The government may allow companies to bid negative prices for megawatt hour saved.

Paying companies not to consume electricity is easier than doing so with families. First, industrial plants have sophisticated metering systems that allow time-based tariffs. Second, companies can more easily switch off consumption completely. Households can benefit from demand response policies via smart digital meters, which allow for the introduction of time-based tariffs.

European policy makers can still implement negative prices for electricity for families via a different route: a kind of cash-for-clunkers program for appliances, modeled on the original 2009 American version for cars. The US program saw 677,000 old cars scrapped, shifting consumer demand to more fuel-efficient vehicles. Next to heating, appliances are at the center of energy demand in most households: washing machines, ovens, dry tumblers, fridges and freezers. Improving their efficiency can save a lot of megawatt hours of power. European governments should use tax breaks — reduced VAT — or even direct subsidies to encourage families to scrap their energy-intensive appliances for less power-hungry ones.

In southern Europe, the scheme should involve air conditioning units, a huge source of power demand nowadays in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. The Greek government is already offering a subsidy of between 30% and 50% of the cost of some new, energy saving appliances. Others should follow.

Ironically, Europe could copy-and-paste some policies from an unlikely champion of energy efficiency: Saudi Arabia. The kingdom has run a program to replace old, inefficient air conditioning units with newer, energy-saving ones for several years already, offering subsidies to families.

A cash-for-clunkers program for air conditioning and other household appliances will not only reduce energy demand, but also support the retail industry and some European manufacturers. It won’t be cheap. But neither are blackouts. And it achieves many policy objectives at a time many families are tightening their belts and the economy is slowing down.

With most of the attention focused on oil and natural gas, people overlook the fact that European electricity markets are already blowing up – and showing the dangers ahead for this winter. French electricity prices for December have surged to nearly 1,000 euros ($1,046) per megawatt hour, up from 50 euros two years ago. The benchmark German one-year forward is up to 300 euros per megawatt hour — excluding two days in December 2021, when prices spiked only to fall back again. That’s a record high.

Demand response measures like negative prices and incentives for industrial slowdowns can help right now. Reducing electricity consumption is key to cutting gas consumption — and dependence on Russia. On Friday morning, the UK was generating nearly 65% of its electricity on gas-fired power stations. That’s gas better saved for the winter, when we’ll need it to heat our homes.

  2. How the Media Used Russiagate Conspiracy Theories to Create a News Cartel
    by Daniel Greenfield

In the fall of 2019, Facebook announced that it would be writing selected media outlets some very big checks. The launch of Facebook News was billed as a way to give consumers more access to information, but it was actually an attempt at appeasing big media companies.

Facebook, with its older and more conservative user base, had become the epicenter of election conspiracies from the Clinton campaign and its media allies. While Hillary Clinton and her associates were eager to shift the blame for her defeat by relaunching their existing Russiagate smears with false claims that Russian Facebook ads had tilted the election to Donald Trump, the media’s obsession with Facebook was even more corruptly self-interested.

  3. Lessons from the left’s implosion

It seems to be only now occurring to progressives how heavily they had leaned on the Supreme Court to act as their cat’s-paw — and how little work they have done to try not only to secure the maximum possible number of Democratic appointments to the Court but, more important, to defend and fortify the intellectual position that made those activist judges such reliable progressive policy-makers for all those decades. And it only now seems to really be becoming clear to them what they have lost by failing to defend that intellectual ground: not only the Roe regime but also much of the progressive activist thinking that made it and similar decisions possible, far-reaching regulatory power and a practically unlimited administrative state. If progressives are shocked by this — and they are shocked — it is because they made the mistake of thinking that convincing the editors of the New York Times was sufficient.

As John Steinbeck once observed, the United States “doesn’t have any self-admitted proletariat.” In some parts of the world, the Left is a genuinely working-class political coalition, but, in the United States, it isn’t: Our working classes, if you will forgive the phrase, are a good deal more socially conservative than the women-with-penises claque that wields such outsized influence within the Democratic Party and other organs of the Left. That disconnect is partly responsible for the election of Donald Trump in 2016, the political development that enabled the most recent transformation of the character of the Supreme Court.

The Left’s woundedness after Dobbs is only partly about abortion politics — it is in a much more significant way an expression of the fact that the Left thinks of the Supreme Court as its own territory.

  5. Steve Krish made the mistake of getting vaccinated, now he has a news letter.

“I am getting multiple reports from nurse friends about two and three year olds having seizures. It is ONLY happening in vaccinated kids and symptoms start 2 to 5 after the Covid vaccine.

Doctors are mystified by a number of seizures, rashes, etc. Happening to 2 and 3 year olds. The ONLY one thing these kids have in common – they were all given the Covid vaccine a few days earlier (2-5 days).

The Doctors cannot figure out what is causing the seizures (since it couldn’t be the vaccines – they are “safe and effective”. The medical staff is not permitted to talk about the cases to the press or on social media or they will be fired.

One nurse posted something to the effect “how is this legal?????” There is nothing about this on mainstream media since Doctors and nurses are NOT allowed to talk about it.

This will all come out someday, but for now EVERYONE is keeping quiet about it and Doctors are instructed to convince parents that it isn’t vaccine related and they are the ONLy ones having this problem.

Why – – because that is the way “science” works.

    • Yes, people are dying from Covid, from sudden death, nothing to do with the vaccines killing anyone. In one week 3 young people in their 40s and 2 in their fifties dropped dead (SADS) but it had nothing to do with them ALL being vaccinated.

My, early on, vaccinated nephew was lucky, he only had a stroke, was operated and is now home. He cannot work, he has to learn to walk again and he has a speech therapist. Nothing to do with the vaccine though.

Another vaccinated, 44 year old was hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs. Nothing to do with the vaccine though.

A 32 year old vaccinated girl with myocarditis, but before you draw any conclusions, it had nothing to do with the vaccine.

Another vaccinated woman, now has Covid and shingles, but nothing to do with the vaccine.

A 62 year old vaccinated neighbour, just fell down dead – – nothing to do with the vaccine – – SADS

  8. reuters – Dutch farmers protest by blocking supermarket distribution centres

AMSTERDAM, July 4 (Reuters) – Dutch farmers angered by government plans that may require them to use less fertilizer and reduce livestock began a day of protests in the Netherlands on Monday by blocking supermarket distribution hubs in several cities.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport and KLM, the Dutch arm of Air France (AIRF.PA), have advised travellers to use public transport, rather than cars, to reach the airport, as farmers’ activist groups said on social media they planned to use tractors to block roads.

Several traffic jams were reported on highways in the east of the country and on ferry routes in the north, but none near Schiphol during the morning commute.

At the heart of the protest are targets introduced last month to reduce harmful nitrogen compounds by 2030, the latest attempt to tackle a problem that has plagued the country for years.

Reductions are necessary in emissions of nitrogen oxides from farm animal manure and from the use of ammonia in fertilizer, the government says, estimating a 30% reduction in the number of livestock is needed.

High-intensity farming of cows, pigs and other animals has made the Netherlands Europe’s leading emitter of the substances. Construction and traffic also contribute.

Dutch and European courts have ordered the Dutch government to address the problem. Farmers say they have been unfairly singled out and have criticised the government’s approach.

Monday’s protest is widely supported by farmers’ groups but not centrally organised.

Previous rounds of protests have included unruly demonstrations outside the homes of politicians and lawmakers — which drew condemnation from Prime Minister Mark Rutte and did not increase public support for the cause.

In 2020 the government set a national speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour in an attempt to ease emissions.

Construction projects are now routinely delayed due to difficulties obtaining licences covering emission of nitrogen compounds.

al jazeera – Dutch farmers block food warehouses over new environmental rules

Fishers block ports in a show of support for farmers who blockaded supermarket distribution centres over new rules.

Farmers in the Netherlands have blockaded supermarket distribution centres in continuing protests against new environmental rules on nitrogen emissions that are likely to put many of them out of business.

Fishers on Monday blocked ports in a show of support for farmers. The blockade prevented ferries from sailing to almost all the Wadden Islands off the country’s northern coast and caused lengthy delays, shipping companies reported.

Also on Monday, farmers used tractors and large bales of hay to block entrances to the supermarket distribution centres, as the association of food traders warned of supply bottlenecks.

The action had been announced in advance, with farmers calling for “the entire country to be paralysed”.

Airports had also made preparation for blockades on access roads. Traffic along most of the country’s dense road network was reported to be normal.

Police said they would intervene if demonstrators moved to block access to Schiphol international airport near Amsterdam.

Over recent weeks, Dutch farmers have engaged in occasionally violent protests against environmental rules aimed at cutting back nitrogen emissions.

While other sectors, including construction, have also been hit, measures to curb the ammonia generated by livestock farming are a significant part of government plans.

Nitrogen emissions are to be cut by more than 70 percent in areas close to nature conservation areas. According to government estimates, this could lead to the shutting down of about 30 percent of livestock farms.

A 2019 ruling by the country’s highest court prompted the government to impose the measures.

Tear gas and dogs break up farmer protests; blockades continue

Dutch police used teargas and dogs to break up some farmer protests on Monday night, gave around 200 fines and made several arrests.

Riot police were called into Heerenveen, where farmers protesting against environmental policy were blocking a Lidl distribution centre with tractors, and used teargas to clear the area. Three people were arrested, according to NOS.

Police also ended a blockade at a centre in Sneek, with Dutch media reporting that others had joined in who were not ‘normal protesters’. Several other protests dispersed early on Tuesday morning.

However, some supermarket distribution centres were still being blocked off by farmers on Tuesday, with the Coop warning of ‘massive food wastage and empty shelves’ and concerns raised about a safety risk with a bridge blockade in Groningen.

Farmers are angry at the prospect of having to shrink livestock numbers in order to meet new pollution targets announced in June. Nitrogen-based emissions will have to decrease by from 12% to 95% in Natura 2000 nature reserves, according to a government map. This affects farmers because manure and farm fertiliser are major sources of pollution.

Mark van den Oever, chairman of protest group the Farmers Defence Force, said that the government policies are unacceptable. ‘The measures just go way too far,’ he told programme Nieuwsuur in June. ‘Technical solutions just aren’t possible in zones in and around nature reserves. So whole areas are going to be swept empty. My supporters are extremely concerned about this. They have their backs against the wall.’

At the weekend, farmers were threatening to bring the country to a standstill, reported the AD, however police have said that so far the protests have brought limited disruption.

The blockades are the latest in weeks of protests after new policy aims were announced in June. Last week, there were at least 10 arrests after farmers attacked police cars, dumped a lorryload of manure on the doorstep of nitrogen policy minister Christianne van der Wal, and blockaded family the ice cream factory of MP Romke de Jonge in the northern province of Friesland.

Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte last week condemned some protesters for going ‘over the limit’ and the government said mediator Johan Remkes will be appointed to take discussions with farmers further.

The appointment is a controversial one, however. Caroline van der Plas of the BoerenBurgerBeweging said Remkes, a VVD member and involved in a report on the nitrogen problem in 2020, could not be regarded as unbiased.

    Fears

Although nitrogen is an inert gas, it can be highly polluting in compounds such as ammonia, nitrogen oxides and the greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide.

In 2019, the Dutch Council of State ruled the government’s policy to reduce excess nitrogen breached EU directives on protecting vulnerable habitats and it needed to do more.

Now, regional governments have been given a year to formulate detailed plans, which are also expected to impact traffic and industry.

Projections made by the Dutch environment agency PBL envisaged reducing livestock farming by 30% and critics predict forced farm closures. ‘The honest truth is that not all farmers can continue with their business, and not always in the way that they farm now,’ said the government in June.

    • Russian forces bolster military presence in NE Syria

Russia on Monday carried out a military shipment to an airport in Syria’s YPG-occupied Qamishli district in the northeastern Hassakeh province, east of the Euphrates.

On Monday morning, the two Russian military cargo aircraft of the Ilyushin Il-76 type landed at the airport in the Qamishli district, most of which is occupied by the PKK’s Syrian branch, the YPG terrorist group, in Hassakeh, local sources told Anadolu Agency (AA).

About 300 Russian soldiers were on board the planes taking off from Latakia’s Khmeimim military airport, as well as military vehicles.

On June 3, the Russian army brought a short and medium-range air defense system Pantsir-S1 to the Qamishli district.

On June 8, the two tanks, a radar system, an anti-aircraft gun of the Dochka type and eight personnel carrier armored vehicles were delivered to the base in Tal Tamir, located on the southeastern front line of Operation Peace Spring.

The number of soldiers of the Russian army in Ain Issa, Tal Tamir, Manbij, Ain al-Arab and Qamishli also increased.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last month that Turkey would launch new military operations in Syria to extend the 30-kilometer (20-mile) deep “safe zones” along the border, aiming at the Tal Rifaat and Manbij regions and other areas further east.

“We are taking another step in establishing a 30-kilometer security zone along our southern border. We will clean up Tal Rifaat and Manbij,” he had said, adding that the planned military operations will gradually continue in other parts of northern Syria.

Erdogan has said that since the United States and Russia have failed to live up to their commitments to provide a safe zone along the border region, Turkey is ready to mount an operation to protect the nation and locals in northern Syria from the PKK/YPG terrorist threat.

In October 2019, Russia committed to removing the terrorist group from Tal Rifaat and Manbij after reaching an agreement with Turkey during Operation Peace Spring. Moscow also promised that the terrorists would be pulled back 30 kilometers from the border on the M4 highway and in the area outside the Operation Peace Spring zone. Likewise, the then-U.S. Vice President Mike Pence pledged to Turkey that the YPG/PKK terrorist group would withdraw from the Operation Peace Spring region. But neither Moscow nor Washington kept their promises.

The YPG/PKK mostly carries out terrorist attacks in Manbij, Ain al-Arab and the Tal Rifaat district of Aleppo, even using these regions as bases for its attacks. The YPG, which occupies roughly a third of Syria’s territory with the support of the United States, frequently targets Azaz, Marea, al-Bab, Jarablus, Afrin, Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain in the north of the country with heavy weapons.

Turkish-backed operations in previous years have ousted the YPG/PKK from the northwestern enclave of Afrin and a series of border towns further east. Since 2016, Ankara has launched a trio of successful counterterrorism operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018) and Peace Spring (2019).

The YPG has controlled much of northeastern Syria since the forces of Syrian regime leader Bashar Assad withdrew in 2012. Assad’s forces have recovered most of Syria but some areas remain outside his control. Turkish forces are deployed in much of the north and northwest, the last opposition stronghold, and U.S. forces are stationed in the YPG-controlled east and northeast.

The PKK is a designated terrorist organization in the U.S., Turkey and the European Union, and Washington’s support for its Syrian affiliate has been a major strain on bilateral relations with Ankara. The U.S. primarily partnered with the YPG in northeastern Syria to fight the Daesh terrorist group. On the other hand, Turkey strongly opposed the YPG’s presence in northern Syria. Ankara has long objected to the U.S.’ support for the YPG, a group that poses a threat to Turkey and terrorizes local people, destroying their homes and forcing them to flee.

      • Filthy Turk mouthpiece puts PKK together with YPG. For him, any and all Kurds look alike. 30 million of them, everywhere in the world.

Well, at least the Kurds have Putin looking over the Filthy Turk’s shoulder.

        Arabs are watching.
They watched the U.S. leave. Given three days notice, 300,000 men, women, and children were displaced. Many died.

Arabs don’t care about Kurds or Israelis, but they pay a LOT of attention to how kafir-leaders treat their little brown allies. The Shah, Mubarak, 0’s treachery with Israel.

They hated Assad, but Putin won big by protecting him. He’ll win again if he intercedes – even just for show – for the Kurds.

The historic U.S. emergency oil reserves release aimed at lowering domestic fuel prices led to more than 5 million barrels of oil being exported to Europe and Asia last month, despite record-high gas and diesel prices.

The news of the export to other nations was reported by Reuters a week ago and raised concern over the continued mismanagement of resources by the Biden Administration.

Oil exports from the U.S to reach an all-time high of 3.3m b/d in the current quarter as refinery disruptions and Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases increase available supplies, Rystad Energy says.

  22. Turkey: Erdo?an Fishing for Trouble in the Aegean Sea – Again
    by Burak Bekdil

Turkey is a year away from presidential and parliamentary elections. Many Turks are starving. Literally. Their per capita GDP of around $9,500 has crushed many of them under a triple-digit inflation rate and a fast-depreciating national currency, while independent economists warn that this may be only the beginning of worse torment in a country of 84 million people, excluding 9 million refugees and migrants.

Many Turks, although starving, are nevertheless proud that they have a leader who can confront the “infidel West” — including their traditional rival and neighbor, Greece. It is precisely this feeling that President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, whose popularity has been plummeting in recent months, sees as a national weakness to stoke. Warmongering, the Islamist strongman evidently calculates, may convince the Turks to support revisionist bullying and ignore their misery.

  23. U.S. sues Arizona over proof of citizenship voting law
While Republicans say law is necessary to prevent voter fraud, voting rights advocates the law will disenfranchise voters
    BY: KIRA LERNER – JULY 5, 2022 3:32 PM

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division announced Tuesday that it has sued Arizona over a law signed by the state’s Republican governor in March that requires people registering to vote prove their citizenship to participate in a presidential election or to vote by mail in any federal election.

Republican proponents of the law, HB 2492, claim that requiring voters to provide a documentary proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate or passport, helps prevent voter fraud. But voting rights advocates say that non-citizen voting is extremely rare, and the law will disenfranchise voters who will have to jump through additional hurdles to be eligible to vote.

“HB 2492’s onerous documentary proof of citizenship requirement for certain federal elections constitutes a textbook violation of the National Voter Registration Act,” in addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in a press call Tuesday.

  26. Russian authorities investigated Jewish Agency for three years

The Jewish Agency has been under investigation by Russian officials for the past three years, during which information and hardware from their offices were examined closely…

As reported on Tuesday, a senior Israeli diplomatic official said that “Russia has claimed that the Jewish Agency illegally collected information about Russian citizens.”

As every organization would do, especially ones that promote immigration to another country, the Jewish Agency’s offices in Russia collect information about people who apply for aliyah or who participate in their activities.

According to DLA Piper, a multinational law firm, amendments to the Russian Data Protection Act were adopted and came into force in 2015. The amendments require all personal data operators to store and process any personal data of Russian individuals within databases located in Russia (subject to few exceptions)….

According to the Russian law, in order to transfer personal data outside Russia’s borders, the operator has to ensure that the rights of personal data subjects will have a high level of protection in the new country destination – before actually transferring the data.

The ministry indicated that the agency officials in Russia have violated the law, since the information gathered there is shared with its offices in Jerusalem or with Israeli government offices in order to proceed with immigration.

The letter stated that the agency should respond to the allegations and may have to cease activities in Russia if found guilty of the charges.

Agency criticized for handling of crisis

According to critical diplomatic officials, the Jewish Agency didn’t update senior diplomatic or government officials regarding the letter, even though it has great implications for the State of Israel.

The officials said they must be transparent since it’s a public and national institution. The officials added that Russian authorities asserted that information about Russian citizens was transferred in an insecure manner…

  27. Seth Frantzman analyzes Iran Deal story gone viral:
Iran’s former FM Zarif reveals Iran deal intrigue, anti-Israel views

Iran’s former foreign minister Javad Zarif has revealed that he believed Israel has some kind of control over Hollywood, that he expected Iran to get a huge payout if it signed the 2015 Iran deal, and that Israel has become closer to the Arab states. An article at Iran’s Fars News claims to provide insight into Zarif’s views via a new video circulating online and Zarif’s discussions with students….
IT IS NOW widely known that the Iran deal was sold to the US via a media campaign that involved hundreds of op-eds in 2014 and 2015. These op-eds and other commentators laid out a simplistic narrative of “a deal or war.” Those who opposed the deal were said to be “pro-war.” Even though it was never clear why absence of a deal would mean war, this narrative was pushed. It was likely Zarif coordinating with friends in the US to push these narratives.

Another narrative the then-foreign minister played up was the assertion that Iran’s regime includes moderates and hardliners. This talking point only exists for Iran. It is argued that if the US doesn’t “help” the moderates like Zarif, then the “hardliners” will come to power. In reality, the regime is only hardliners and they all basically agree on most issues…

Zarif correctly understood that Israel is now an ally of the Arab world. The pro-Iran lobby in the US sought, after 2008, to reconfigure American policy into a pro-Iran stance. This belief system sought to jettison traditional US partners such as Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey and the Gulf. The shift meant that Washington needed the Iran deal to beg Tehran to be more amicable to the US.

The goal of these “Iran dealers” was a massive policy shift. This helped set in motion a closer relationship between Israel and the Gulf and eventually resulted in the Abraham Accords.

But Iran in fact pressed its advantage too much during the Obama era. It believed the US would leave the region and end its ties to its traditional friends and Iran could enter the vacuum. But the ruin that it brought through its actions led many countries to fear it even more.

For pro-Iran deal types like then-Secretary of State John Kerry…
