Reader’s Links for June 24th, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  4. SPAIN – MELILLA – JUNE 24 2022 – Thousands of migrants attempt to enter Spanish enclave Melilla from Morocco

Melilla and Ceuta, Spain’s other tiny North African enclave, have the European Union’s only land borders with Africa, making them a magnet for migrants.

Some 2,000 migrants tried to cross the border separating Spain’s Melilla enclave from Morocco on Friday, the first such attempted mass crossing into the territory since the two nations mended diplomatic ties in March.

Melilla and Ceuta, Spain’s other tiny North African enclave, have the European Union’s only land borders with Africa, making them a magnet for migrants. A group of 2,000 migrants tried to push across the border fence at 8:40 am on Friday and a “significant number” managed to get in, the Spanish government’s local delegation said in a statement.

Some 2,000 migrants made their way to the border at dawn and over 500 managed to enter the border control area after cutting a fence with shears. Of these, 130 sub-Saharan African migrants, “all of them men and apparently adults” according to the statement, entered Melilla.

Morocco deployed a “large” amount of forces to attempt to repel the people trying to cross the border. Moroccan forces “cooperated actively” with Spain’s security forces, the statement added.

Images on Spanish media showed exhausted migrants laying on the sidewalk in Melilla, some with bloodied hands and torn clothes.

    • Blinken Delivers Remarks at a Food Ministerial Plenary Session in Berlin

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71JGTRoQCGA

      =======================
      Preventing Hunger

U.S. Secretary of State Blinken is traveling to Berlin where he will attend a G7 Food Security Ministerial on June 24 from 2-5 p.m. local time, with additional activities on June 25, including press interviews. The Secretary will engage with foreign ministers in bilateral meetings prior to the Ministerial. For the Ministerial plenary session, the German Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, and Development will invite governments from developed and developing countries, international organizations, and NGOs to this “stocktaking” event focused on soliciting advice and advancing a mechanism forward.

This Administration has produced a global action plan to respond to the immediate crisis that focuses on five lines of effort:??

First, we have provided nearly $2.8 billion in food security and other humanitarian assistance since February.? In addition, the Supplemental signed by the President in May provides around $4.3 billion in additional humanitarian and development assistance.??

Second, we’re working with other countries to mitigate the global fertilizer shortage.? President Biden announced a $500 million investment to increase domestic fertilizer production as well as a Global Fertilizer Challenge to raise at least $100 million toward increasing fertilizer efficiency and developing alternatives by COP 27.??

Third, we are boosting agricultural capacity and resilience through the Feed the Future initiative.?

Fourth, we are taking measures to cushion the macroeconomic shocks of this crisis on the most vulnerable populations

And fifth, we are keeping this issue high on our diplomatic agenda.

On May 18, the United States hosted the “Global Food Security Call to Action” ministerial-level event to rally countries and regional organizations to take steps to bolster global food supplies and increase resilience and pledged $215 million in new emergency food assistance for Algeria, Iraq, Yemen, Cameroon, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Mauritania, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya, bringing the total U.S. funding for emergency food assistance to nearly $2.8 billion since February for countries in Africa (Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso), the Middle East (Lebanon and Syria), and Latin and Central America.

92 other countries have endorsed the U.S.-led Roadmap action plan released at the May 18 Ministerial.

We support the German-led Global Alliance for Food Security – announced on May 18 in Berlin – to share information on country needs and donor responses and coordinate actions to increase global food security.

According to the Global Report on Food Crises, between 2016 and 2021 the number of people living in acute food insecurity jumped from about 108 million to 193 million, in part because of the accelerating climate crisis, armed conflict, increased demand, and the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting food supply chains, causing prices to spike in many places.?

The Kremlin’s further invasion of Ukraine has directly destabilized global food supply chains.? Ukraine is one of the breadbaskets of the world and a leading producer and exporter of wheat, corn, and sunflower oil.

Russian military forces have captured some of Ukraine’s most productive farmland.?They planted explosives throughout fields.? They’ve destroyed and stolen vital agricultural infrastructure.?

Russia’s naval blockade in the Black Sea and the threat of further naval attacks are preventing Ukraine’s crops from being exported to their normal destinations. 20 to 25 million tons of wheat trapped in silos and in ships.?

There are also credible reports that Russia is pilfering Ukraine’s grain exports to sell for its own profit.?

As long as Putin continues his war in Ukraine, millions of people, well beyond Ukraine’s borders, will suffer from increased food insecurity, with countries in the near east and Africa experiencing an outsized share of the pain.??

Russia is responsible for exacerbating the global food crisis by taking food off the global market, which is limiting access to critically needed foodstuffs, and placing pressure on prices U.S. sanctions on Russia explicitly authorize transactions for agricultural commodities, even with sanctioned entities.??

Kremlin disinformation to?deflect responsibility or distort reality is but a cynical ploy in the hopes that Western sanctions will be lifted.

    • Russia’s war to cast 40-50 million people into hunger: Antony Blinken

BERLIN: Russia’s war against Ukraine, not Western sanctions, will add another 40 or 50 million more people to the ranks of the hungry, said US secretary of state Antony Blinken in Berlin.

“There is no reason other than Russia’s blockade of Ukraine and Russia’s refusal in many cases to export its own grain for political reasons,” said Blinken at a joint news conference with German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock on Friday.

Baerbock said international partners were working together to counter Russia’s “cynical” and potentially destabilizing grains war and the corresponding propaganda.

Blinken: Russia has already lost the war to Ukraine

Blinken said that Russia’s actions in Ukraine over the past 8 years cannot be described as “protecting lives.”

After four months of a full-scale Russian military invasion of the territory of independent Ukraine, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the Russian Federation had already lost this war.

Blinken stated this during a briefing.

The Ukrainians are defending with incredible courage, and Russia has already lost. As he himself said, Putin’s goal was to destroy Ukraine as an independent and sovereign country. This goal failed … According to our intelligence, Russian troops suffer from low morale, high death rates, technical problems, and leadership that refuses to inform them of the real state of affairs on the battlefield

On June 22, 2022, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said that Russia’s actions in Ukraine over the past 8 years cannot be described as “protecting lives.”

President Putin’s latest attack on Ukraine comes after years of Kremlin brutality against the people of Ukraine. Nothing Russia has done in Ukraine over the past 8 years can be described as ‘protecting lives,’

On June 24, 2022, Blinken announced that the G7 countries at the upcoming summit in Germany would discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine and the consequences of military aggression.

    • US gov’t body plots to break up Russia in name of ‘decolonization’

The US government’s Helsinki Commission held a Congressional briefing plotting ways to break up Russia as a country, in the name of supposed “decolonization.”

A US government body held a Congressional briefing plotting ways to break up Russia as a country, in the name of supposed “decolonization.”

The participants urged the United States to give more support to separatist movements inside Russia and in the diaspora.

They proposed the independence of numerous republics in the Russian Federation, including Chechnya, Tatarstan, and Dagestan, as well as historic areas that existed centuries ago such as Circassia.

This is far from the first time that hawks in Washington have fantasized about carving up foreign countries. During the first cold war, the US sponsored secessionist groups inside the Soviet Union. In the 1990s, the US-led NATO military cartel successfully dismantled Yugoslavia. And Washington has long backed separatists in the Chinese regions of Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

  5. yahoo news – Michelle Obama expresses heartbreak over Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade: ‘Horrifying’

Michelle Obama has expressed her heartbreak over the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

On Friday, just moments after the Supreme Court’s ruling eliminated the constitutional right to abortion in the US, the former first lady shared a statement condemning the decision.

“I am heartbroken today. I am heartbroken for people around this country who just lost the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their bodies,” Ms Obama wrote. “I am heartbroken that we may now be destined to learn the painful lessons of a time before Roe was made law of the land – a time when women risked losing their lives getting illegal abortions.

“A time when the government denied women control over their reproductive functions, forced them to move forward with pregnancies they didn’t want, and then abandoned them once their babies were born.

“That is what our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers lived through, and now here we are again.”

  7. Morocco: 5 migrants dead in stampede in bid to enter Melilla
    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/article/Morocco-5-migrants-dead-in-stampede-in-bid-to-17263429.php
Five Africans seeking to cross into Spain were killed and scores of migrants and police were injured in what Moroccan authorities called a “stampede” of people surging across Morocco’s border fence with the Spanish North African enclave of Melilla on Friday.
A total of 133 migrants breached the border between the Moroccan city of Nador and Melilla on Friday, the first such mass crossing since Spain and Morocco mended diplomatic relations last month. A spokesperson for the Spanish government’s office in Melilla said about 2,000 people attempted to cross, but many were stopped by Spanish Civil Guard police and Moroccan forces on either side of the border fence.
Morocco’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that the casualties occurred when people tried to climb the iron fence. It said five migrants were killed and 76 injured, and 140 Moroccan security officers were injured. The injured were hospitalized in Nador, it said.
Spanish officials said 49 Civil Guards sustained minor injuries and 57 migrants had to be treated, three of them in hospital. None is in serious condition. Four police vehicles were damaged by rocks thrown by some migrants.
Those who succeeded in crossing went to a local migrant center, where authorities were evaluating their circumstances.
People fleeing poverty and violence sometimes make mass attempts to reach Melilla and the other Spanish territory on the North African coast, Ceuta, as a springboard to continental Europe.
Spain normally relies on Morocco to keep migrants away from the border.
Over two days at the beginning of March, more than 3,500 people tried to scale the six-meter (20-foot) barrier that surrounds Melilla and nearly 1,000 made it across, according to Spanish authorities.
Friday’s crossings were the first attempt since relations between Spain and Morocco improved in March after a year-long dispute centered on the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony annexed by Morocco in 1976.
Morocco loosened its controls around Ceuta last year, allowing thousands of migrants to cross into Spain. The move was viewed as retaliation for Spain’s decision to allow the leader of Western Sahara’s pro-independence movement to be treated for COVID-19 at a Spanish hospital.
Tensions between the two countries began to thaw earlier this year after Spain backed Morocco’s plan to grant more autonomy to Western Sahara, where activists are seeking full independence.
