Reader’s Links for June 15th, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. SHANGHAI, June 14 (Reuters) – A protest planned by hundreds of bank depositors in central China seeking access to their frozen funds has been thwarted because the authorities have turned their health code apps red, several depositors told Reuters.

The depositors were planning to travel to the central province of Henan this week from across China to protest against an almost two-month block on accessing at least $178 million of deposits, which has left companies unable to pay workers and individuals unable to access savings. read more

Rights groups have warned China could use its vast COVID surveillance infrastructure to stifle dissent. Without a green code on their smartphone app, citizens lose access to public transport and spaces such as restaurants and malls, as well as the right to travel across the country.

“They are putting digital handcuffs on us,” said a depositor from Sichuan province surnamed Chen, who declined to use his full name for fear of government retribution.

The Henan provincial government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Public Security did not respond to requests for comment.

After recent COVID outbreaks, some regions in China have asked travellers to register their plans online.

A man surnamed Liu, who lives in Hubei province, found that his health code turned red on the morning of June 12 after he registered the day before to travel to Henan.

    • If their is enough internal opposition to the CCP rule to justify this the CCP may decide to start a war to ramp up patriotism.

The Rise of the Xi Gang: Factional politics in the Chinese Communist Party

As the global debate on the Chinese model, and especially its domestic political system intensifies, there is a tendency to regard the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) as a monolith. This paper corrects such a view and argues that any attempt to comprehend elite politics in China requires an understanding of the factional dynamics within the party.

The paper outlines the evolution of factional politics in China, and shows how two factions – the Shanghai Gang and the Chinese Communist Youth League (CCYL) – have dominated the country’s politics over the past three decades. The rise of President Xi Jinping in the last few years has run parallel to the emergence of his own new faction—now the dominant one in the party.

  2. International pop star Justin Bieber’s career is in jeopardy since being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Type 2—a common side effect of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, particularly after the third and fourth shot booster.

The twenty-eight year old “Love Yourself” singer, who got his start busking on the streets of Stratford, Ontario, cancelled his Justice World Tour, including two shows in Toronto, Canada, after he was stricken with “full paralysis” on half his face. The Canadian-born singer said he was suffering a “pretty serious” case of the malady in a video he posted to his Instagram page. Bieber also cancelled shows in February 2022 after he came down with COVID-19, despite being “fully vaccinated.”

In fact, only a few months earlier, Bieber’s wife, model and actress, Hailey Beiber, suffered a stroke and other serious health issues. The twenty-five year old had no prior medical conditions but sources say was fully vaccinated. Look out for our coverage of her battle with vaccine injury.

According to the source close to Bieber, the pop star is “struggling to stay silent” about the possible causes, adding, “It’s a whole moral thing he’s struggling with. He’s also been told that if he speaks publicly about vaccine injury then his record label may be forced to drop him.”

Ottawa does not rule out introducing a three-dose vaccination obligation in the fallOttawa does not rule out introducing a three-dose vaccination obligation in the fall

(Ottawa) If the epidemiological situation deteriorates in the fall, Ottawa does not rule out reinstating a vaccination obligation. And this time, the requirement might be three or even four doses.

      The Canadian Press

“Today’s keyword is ‘transition’,” Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said on Tuesday during a press conference where he announced that the vaccine passport would no longer be required for travelers and officials.

And this transition goes much further. It drops the concept of being “fully vaccinated” and replaces it with that of “up-to-date vaccination”.

“Two doses are no longer sufficient to protect against infection and transmission, and that is why we are transitioning to an updated definition of vaccination,” said Duclos.

“An up-to-date vaccination, for the vast majority of Quebecers, is a three-dose vaccination,” he said. For some Quebecers, it is a four-dose vaccination. »

This change in posture is in line with the recommendation of the Chief Public Health Officer, the DD Theresa Tam, and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI).

At a press conference on Friday, the DD Tam reported that, across studies, two doses of vaccine have “very low” efficacy against the Omicron variant after six months.

With two doses, the immunization that initially ranged from 50% to 80% drops to around 20%, Dr. Tam said. A third dose allows it to rise again around the 50% to 60% mark.

The rate of Canadians who have received at least one booster dose is “too low” in the country, Minister Duclos said on Tuesday. “It is lower than any other G7 country,” he said.

The federal government therefore plans to work “closely” with the provinces and territories to increase the rate of people vaccinated with three doses in order to be adequately prepared for “what could happen in the fall”.

While 90.2% of Canadian adults are doubly vaccinated, only 58.5% have received their third dose.

“We must increase this significantly, at least to the level that we have had in the last few months for the second dose”, declared the minister.

The obligation to be vaccinated for travelers and civil servants was put in place on October 30, 2021 and will be lifted on Monday.

  4. europravda – Jeff Koons ‘Balloon Monkey’ sculpture expected to sell for millions at auction for Ukraine

A giant sculpture by American artist Jeff Koons titled Balloon Monkey (Magenta) will go under the hammer at London auction house Christie’s.

The iconic four-metres-high art piece is estimated to fetch between at least £6,000,000 to £10,000,000.

The sculpture was donated to Christie’s by Ukrainian billionaire couple Victor and Olena Pinchuk and the money raised will go towards vital funds for humanitarian aid for Ukraine – particularly to assist soldiers and civilians in need of prosthetics, medical treatment and rehabilitation as a result of the war.

The sculpture will stand in St James’s Square adjacent to Christie’s UK headquarters in London until 3 July 2022.

“We very much hope that people will come and see it and enjoy it and see it flanked by trees and in an environment they can imagine at home,” says Katharine Arnold, head of post-war and contemporary art at Christie’s.

Koons’ sculptures are among some of the most expensive to have ever been sold at auction.

“The last time in fact that we sold a Jeff Koons sculpture of this type in this square in 2008 it sold for 25 million dollars. And the orange version of this sculpture sold for 25 million dollars in New York, not that many years ago,” says Arnold.

In 2019, a stainless steel sculpture of a rabbit by Jeff Koons set an auction record in New York, fetching over $91 million.

The sale of Koons’ 1986 “Rabbit” at Christie’s was the most expensive work by a living artist ever sold at auction.

Balloon Monkey (Magenta) will be auctioned at Christie’s 20th/ 21st Century: London Evening Sale on 28 June 2022.

      • the telegraph – Exclusive: US fighters ‘captured’ by Russian forces in Ukraine

Alexander Drueke and Andy Huynh are both veterans of the US military who travelled to the frontline to help in the war effort

Two former US servicemen have been captured during fighting with Russian forces in Ukraine, The Telegraph has learned.

The pair were taken prisoner during a fierce battle outside the north-east city of Kharkiv last week, according to comrades who were fighting alongside them.

Alexander Drueke, 39, and Andy Huynh, 27, had been serving as volunteers with a regular Ukrainian army unit. They are believed to be the first US servicemen to end up as Russian prisoners of war.

They will join a growing number of Western military volunteers captured by Russian forces, including three Britons – Aiden Aslin, Shaun Pinner and Andrew Hill.

Last week, a court in the pro-Russian breakaway state of the Donetsk People’s Republic sentenced Mr Aslin and Mr Pinner to death, after trying them as “mercenaries”.

The capture of the two Americans will be diplomatically sensitive, as the Kremlin may seek to use it as proof that the US is becoming directly involved in the war. Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, is likely to demand significant concessions in exchange for their release.

A comrade of the two men, who asked not to be named, told The Telegraph they had been captured after running into a much larger Russian force during a battle last Thursday in the village of Izbytske, 30 miles north-east of Kharkiv. The village is less than five miles from the Russian border.

“We were out on a mission and the whole thing went absolutely crazy, with bad intel,” he said.

“We were told the town was clear, when it turned out the Russians were already assaulting it. They came down the road with two T72 tanks and multiple BMP3s [armoured fighting vehicles] and about 100 infantry. The only thing that was there was our 10-man squad.”

The squad fell back and set up defensive positions, laying an anti-tank mine in the road for the advancing T72s. Mr Drueke and Mr Huynh, meanwhile, manned an RPG7 rocket-propelled grenade launcher together.

“Everybody took cover waiting for one of the tanks to hit the anti-tank mine, but Alex and Andy saw a BMP3 coming from another direction through the woods and realised that it would kill most of us. They opened fire and took it out with their first shot.”

That, however, drew the attention of one of the T72 tanks, which fired a shot in the pair’s direction. The shell is thought to have missed them, but may have caused a blast that knocked them out.

Shortly afterwards, the tank itself was crippled itself by one of the anti-tank mines. The two Americans then vanished in the fog of battle, where they are thought to have been captured by the Russian infantry soldiers.

Their comrade said: “It was all very chaotic, but we suspect that they were knocked unconscious by either the blast from the tank shooting at them, or from the anti-tank mine blowing up, because later search missions found not a sign of them.

“Afterwards, we sent drones up and had a Ukrainian search team on the ground, but we found nothing. If they had been hit by the tank shell, there would have been remains of their bodies or equipment at the scene.”

He said his suspicions grew later that night, when a message appeared on a Russian Telegram channel claiming that two American servicemen had been taken as prisoners of war near Kharkiv.

“Z group have scored some success in the Kharkiv destination for the last two days. We have taken hostage 10-20 Ukrainian soldiers and also today two American mercenaries,” the post said.

Their comrade said: “It is too much of a coincidence for that to have happened otherwise – we are the only Americans fighting in this area.”

“We are not mercenaries, or part of some militia. We are serving under the command of the Ukrainian armed forces. I am speaking out on my missing comrades’ behalf because I want it in the public domain that they are missing, so that the Russian high command is made aware too.

“That hopefully reduces the chances of them being quietly executed by whoever is holding them further down the chain.”

Mr Drueke, 39, is from Tuscaloosa, in Alabama, and signed up with the US Army after 9/11, serving in Iraq as a staff sergeant.

His mother Lois, 68, told The Telegraph that he had worked as a top gunner in convoys escorting VIPs through Baghdad – a job that made him a constant target for insurgent gunmen and led to him suffering PTSD.

He struggled to hold down a job after leaving the army and had to abandon a new career as a policeman, because it aggravated his PTSD.

However, she said that when Putin’s forces invaded Ukraine, her son saw a fresh opportunity to put his military skills to good use.

“Alex felt strongly that Mr Putin needed to be stopped, it would lead to another world war,” she said. “He said that knew how to train people and could do his small part.

“I was worried about him going out there, but once he was out there he sounded happy for the first time in years. He liked being back in the military world with a sense of purpose and he said he had fallen in love with Ukraine.”

At first, she said, her son told her he was only involved in training Ukrainian forces. However, last Wednesday, she received a message from him, hinting that he was “going dark for a day or two”.

“I told him to be safe and that I loved him, but he kept details very vague,” she said. “The US embassy have assured me that they are doing everything they can to find him and that they are searching for him alive, not dead. I am doing my best not to fall apart, I am going to stay strong.”

Mr Huynh was born to Vietnamese parents in California but lived in Alabama’s Tennessee Valley area, where he was studying robotics at college. He had previously served for four years in the US Marines, but had no combat experience.

His fiancée, Joy Black, said the idea of volunteering had been “gnawing” at him ever since the very first day of the Russian invasion on February 24.

“He said to me: ‘They are attacking with 60 battalions, do you know how much that is?’

“At first I didn’t really take him seriously, but he was reading all these stories about young Ukrainian men having to fight as soon they turned 18, and he felt he should try to help.

“I tried to persuade him not to go, but I think his mind was made up. I could see how it was gnawing at him. Eventually, he apologised to me and said he really had to go.”

Prior to leaving, he took a baptism at his local church, the Trinity Free Presbyterian, where he told his pastor that he felt “a burden from God to go and help”.

Ms Black received a call from Mr Huynh’s comrades on Monday to say that he had gone missing.

“I was told they had not made their rendezvous point and that some drone searches had been done that had found no trace of them,” she said.

“He didn’t tell me anything about the operation he was on last week, as he didn’t want to scare me. I just want to have him back safely.”

The US State Department in Washington told The Telegraph: “We are aware of unconfirmed reports of two US citizens captured in Ukraine.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with Ukrainian authorities. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment.”

Mrs Drueke said that she hoped the US diplomats would press for her son and Mr Huynh to be part of a prisoner swap deal in exchange for Russian prisoners of war captured by Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have already said that they are hoping for such a deal for Mr Pinner, 48, and Mr Aslin, 28, who have been sentenced to death by firing squad.

“The possibility that the two British men may be exchanged is encouraging for us,” said Mrs Drueke.

DEUTSCHE PRAVDA – Gazprom slashes gas deliveries via Nord Stream

Russia’s Gazprom said it would be reducing the daily gas deliveries via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany to 100 million cubic meters per day. The energy giant cited delayed repair works by the German company Siemens.

The pipeline runs from Russia to Germany. It can usually carry 167 million cubic meters, according to Gazprom.

Nord Stream is the older of two gas pipelines for Russian gas to Germany.

The newest project, Nord Stream 2, was put to a halt after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Last month, a third of Russian gas that is piped to Europe through Ukraine was cut off when Kiev suspended Russian gas flows via one of the two transit points.

Gazprom is curbing shipments via Nord Stream pipeline by 60%

German Economy Minster says cut is politically motivated

Russia stepped up the use of energy as a weapon by further cutting natural gas shipments via its biggest pipeline to Europe, prompting Germany to accuse the Kremlin of trying to drive up prices.

Gazprom PJSC is curbing gas supplies via its Nord Stream pipeline to Germany by 60%, increasing an initial cut to Europe’s top buyer announced on Tuesday. The move adds to a 15% reduction in flows to Italy, the continet’s second-largest customer of Russian gas, putting more pressure on already tight European energy markets and sending gas prices surging more than 25%.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said Russia was trying to unsettle markets and prop up prices, but that security of supply was guaranteed for now. The curbs reignited tensions with Moscow, which had calmed down after several European countries found ways of paying for gas in rubles, meeting a demand from President Vladimir Putin.

[…]The loss of Russian supply coincided with a drop in US capacity to ship liquefied natural gas to the region after a major export terminal in Texas was damaged by fire. The operator of the Freeport LNG export facility in Texas said on Tuesday that it may take 90 days for the plant to be partially back online, far longer than an earlier projection of a minimum three weeks. Full capacity isn’t expected to be available until late 2022.

DEUTSCHE PRAVDA – Gazprom to further cut gas supplies to Germany via Nord Stream

The Russian energy giant said it was cutting supply volumes to Germany through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline by roughly another third, after an initial reduction on Tuesday.

Russian energy giant Gazprom said on Wednesday it would further reduce the capacity of gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 67 million cubic meters (2,366 million cubic feet) per day.

The decision comes into effect at 01:30 a.m. Moscow time on Thursday (2230 UTC on Wednesday), Gazprom said, adding that the halt was due to the “technical condition of the engine” at a compression station.

The company had announced on Tuesday that it was curbing supplies through the same undersea pipeline to up to 100 million cubic meters per day, down from 167.

Gazprom initially blamed the delayed return of equipment that had been sent to German company Siemens for repairs.

On Tuesday, Siemens Energy said the delay in returning the equipment to Gazprom was because they were taken to Canada for a scheduled overhaul and have not been returned due to Ottawa’s sanctions on Russia.

        How did Germany react?

Robert Habeck, Germany’s economy minister and vice-chancellor, said the move was intended to drive up prices.

“It is obviously a strategy to unsettle and drive up prices,” he said on Wednesday, adding, “We can currently buy the necessary quantities from the market, albeit at higher prices.”

The Greens politician insisted that gas supplies in Germany were secure. However, he said, “the current situation also shows that saving energy is the order of the day.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Habeck said the move was clearly “politically motivated” rather than a result of technical problems.

We also discussed Secretary Austin’s efforts in Brussels today to coordinate additional international support for the Ukrainian armed forces.

We also remain committed to supporting the Ukrainian people whose lives have been ripped apart by this war. Today, I am also announcing an additional $225 million in humanitarian assistance to help people inside Ukraine, including by supplying safe drinking water, critical medical supplies and health care, food, shelter, and cash for families to purchase essential items.

The bravery, resilience, and determination of the Ukrainian people continues to inspire the world. And the United States, together with our allies and partners, will not waver in our commitment to the Ukrainian people as they fight for their freedom.

Today a lady waiting in line for a teller asked me if she should take her mask off since I was not wearing one. I smiled and told her she should take it off and throw it in the garbage and NEVER wear the control symbol again. She agreed with me and said she was just a little worried what others would say. I told her the fear freaks have had their day in the sun, helped Justine take away our freedom bit by bit but now we must push back and it is OK to laugh in their faces when they get crazy. There is nothing to fear but fear itself.

I also noticed a lot of people taking out large sums of money, hmmmm.

  10. CBC – FDA advisers vote to authorize 2 COVID-19 vaccines for kids 5 and under in U.S.

[…]Health Canada is also reviewing Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for younger children. Canada has not yet received an application for that age group from Pfizer.

There is no word yet when a decision will be made in Canada.

[…]”Each child that’s lost essentially fractures a family,” Marks said.

Dr. Arwa Nasir, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, told CBC News that making the vaccine available to young children is “very important” in protecting them from COVID-19.

“Kids under five, you know, they can’t mask as well. Their hand, mouth and hygiene habits are not as established as with adults. So transmission does happen very highly in this patient population,” Nasir, who was not on the FDA advisory panel, said on Wednesday.

    […]Canadian parents waiting

In an emailed statement to CBC News on Wednesday, Health Canada said that because its review of Moderna’s pediatric vaccine for younger children is still ongoing, “it is not possible to predict when a regulatory decision will be made.”

Although some parents are unsure whether they will vaccinate their young children, others are waiting anxiously for it to be available in Canada, said Dr. Fatima Kakkar, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal.

“It is coming,” Kakkar told CBC News, noting that advisory groups are reviewing the data in real time and rollout should not take too long if the little kid-sized vaccine gets Health Canada approval.

[…]She hopes the fact that the approval process takes time will reassure vaccine-hesitant parents that experts consider the risks and benefits very carefully before making recommendations.

“This is that only group that we haven’t been able to offer protection for and that we don’t have great treatments for if they get COVID,” Kakkar said.

[…]But the priority and the reason for giving it to these children is to protect them from severe disease and severe outcomes.”

    NEW YORK TIMES – JUNE 15 2022

Parents Anxious to Vaccinate Young Children Describe an Agonizing Wait

Times readers with babies, toddlers or preschoolers who are unvaccinated against the coronavirus wrote in about worries and strains, loneliness and lost time.

Tyfanee Pratt’s son Julian was born in November 2019 in Burlington, N.J. Before long, Ms. Pratt was ready to introduce him to the world. But then, she wrote, “Covid-19 slammed the door on us — locked us in and hid away the key.”

Ms. Pratt responded to a call to New York Times readers, asking parents of young children about life with an unvaccinated baby, toddler or preschooler.

“His father and I have been his cellmates,” she wrote to The Times, adding that the experience nearly destroyed their relationship.

Ms. Pratt is among the estimated one in five parents of children younger than 5 who, according to recent surveys, have been waiting anxiously for the Food and Drug Administration to authorize a coronavirus vaccine for the youngest Americans. That age group, with roughly 20 million children, is the only one not yet eligible for the shots.

A committee of experts advising the F.D.A. voted on Wednesday to recommend that the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna pediatric coronavirus vaccines be authorized for young children. If the rest of the regulatory process moves swiftly, children could begin getting the shots as soon as next week.

Most parents are not so eager to get their young children vaccinated, surveys have found. A Kaiser Family Foundation survey this spring found that about two in five parents said they planned to wait and see how the vaccine works for others before deciding what to do. And 38 percent said they would definitely not get their children vaccinated, or would do so only if required.

A number of parents who wrote that they were in no rush to get their children vaccinated said it was because the children had already been infected with the virus. But at Wednesday’s F.D.A. committee meeting, a Moderna official said the company’s study found that young children who got Omicron and were vaccinated had greater levels of protection, a conclusion backed by outside research.

“Because the mortality rate for children is super low, and having already had a bout with Covid omicron version, we should be OK for a while,” a parent in New York City wrote to The Times. “Unless any variant comes up with more dire consequences for those under 5, I would wait until my child turns 5 to vaccinate likely.”

Adrian Bryant of Willowbrook, Ill., who has a 3½-year-old daughter, said he was “not sold” on giving the vaccines to young children, explaining, “My child had Covid twice that I’m aware of, and although she was sick, she did bounce back quickly.”

But for parents like Ms. Pratt who do want to vaccinate their children, the wait has been agonizing.

More than 1,600 parents responded to The Times’s call in less than 24 hours last month. Their outpouring of thoughts and feelings reflected how they and their children have suffered without access to a pediatric vaccine — emotionally, socially and financially.

Here are some of the ways they described the wait: Hell. Brutal. Torture. Terrifying. Horrible. Heartbreaking.

“Nearly lost my job and my mind,” wrote one parent. “Halved my income,” said another. “The hardest time in my life.” “I feel helpless and hopeless.” “Extremely lonely; I’m tearing up as I’m writing this.” “Every cough sets me on edge.”

“We aren’t making memories.” “My kids are missing out on being kids.” “I’ve been breast feeding for 20 months to give her some immunity.” “It’s like trying to protect them from an avalanche.”

Many parents expressed anguish that their children might suffer developmental delays because they have never had a play date or any of the usual contact with children their age.

“When my 2.5-year-old had his first friend over to play, he kept touching her to see if she was real,” wrote Lauren Klinger of St. Petersburg, Fla. “It’s soul-crushing.”

Angela Smith, a former web designer who founded a nonprofit organization called Pantry Collective, is now a stay-at-home mother of a 2-year-old girl in Colorado Springs. “She doesn’t know all she’s missing out on, and I’m thankful for that,” Ms. Smith wrote. “But I do, and that’s what makes me sad.”

    What Parents Are Saying

“She’s only been to church twice since March 2020, both times masked. I worry constantly that we have become too lax, but we are the only ones still masking our unvaccinated child in public indoor spaces. I have resorted to paying my children $1 every time they wear a mask in public indoor places.” — Kristen Green Wiewora, Searcy, Ark.

“Leave the kids alone. Perfect the vaccine (which usually takes 10 years!!) and then get the kids involved. I think the earliest a child should get this vaccine is in their late teens.” — Patricia Verma, Reno, Nev.

“We barely go anywhere. When my 2.5-year-old had his first friend over to play, he kept touching her to see if she was real. It’s soul-crushing, scary, sad, not at all what I expected from parenting when I got pregnant in 2019.” — Lauren Klinger, St. Petersburg, Fla.

“Imagine Groundhog Day, but full off worry, stress, loneliness, heartbreak. She doesn’t know all she’s missing out on, and I’m thankful for that. But I do, and that’s what makes me sad. — Angela Smith, Colorado Springs

“It’s exhausting and heartbreaking. Every day, I choke back tears when getting her ready for day care. We haven’t left our home state, seen the inside of an airport, or been in a room with more than 12 people since February of 2020.” — Katie Nelb, McKinney, Texas

“I’m not sold on efficacy and potential side effects.” — Adrian Bryant, Willowbrook, Ill.

Many wrote of how the pandemic had exposed societal divisions, a lack of trust in government and public health, and a lack of empathy for others. One New York City mother wrote that she and her toddler often wait 20 minutes to use their apartment building’s elevator by themselves, rather than risk riding with an unmasked passenger.

A parent in Denver wrote, “We are a nation of selfish children, except for the children themselves.”

Katie Nelb, an information technology worker and mother of a 3-year-old in McKinney, Texas, wrote: “I have friends and acquaintances who have gotten on planes, gone to events and wandered through grocery stores either knowingly having Covid or while having symptoms but not wanting to test. And because I know so many people are doing those things while my child has no protection, my family is forced to still live in lockdown after two and a half years.”

Alli Chan is a pediatric intensive care nurse in St. Louis. Her husband is an emergency medicine doctor. Their youngest is nearly 3; their 6-year-old has immune deficiencies.

She and her husband felt so strongly about protecting their children that they told relatives that they would see them only if they were vaccinated. “We have to protect our children, and if our extended family isn’t willing to do that, then we’ll protect our children from them, too,” she wrote.

Kristen Green Wiewora of Searcy, Ark., said others in her town did not share her worries about the spread of infection in public indoor spaces, making it harder for her to keep her own children, ages 4 and 8, wearing masks.

“We are the only ones still masking our unvaccinated child,” she wrote. “I have resorted to paying my children a dollar every time they wear a mask in public indoor places.”

Ms. Pratt’s son Julian is now 2½ and curious about everything. She ticked off what he missed as other Americans got vaccinated and returned “to the comfort of familiar routines and everyday freedom”:

“He has never even been to a grocery store or a mall,” she wrote. “Never gone trick-or-treating with friends. Never sat on Santa’s lap. Never been to an indoor family gathering. He has yet to meet or spend time with the majority of our friends and family.

“We are on the inside, looking out,” she wrote.
