Reader’s Links for June 9th, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Russian journalist Alexander Kots, a war reporter with over 20 years of experience in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Libya, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Donbass & Karabakh, streamed a Q&A session about the war yesterday; here’s a thread with a summary of what he said:

    – The Ukrainians have excellent artillery training & equipment

    – The AFU emphasize small unit tactics; this slowed down the Russian advance in the beginning of the war

    – The Russian offensive routes largely matched with those the Ukrainians trained for in NATO exercises

    – The border regions were full of photo traps & other surveillance equipment that gave the Ukrainians a good idea of what was happening militarily

    – Even a full liberation of the DPR & LPR won’t secure Donetsk from Ukrainian shelling bc of long-range weapon systems

    – The seemingly senseless shelling of Donetsk is explained by Ukrainian attempts to cause discontent among civilians in the sense that the Russian Armed Forces cannot protect them

    – The capture of Lisichansk will mark the full liberation of the LPR

    – “Small cauldron” tactics & the slow advances are deliberate, but not the tactics of choice; Russians are advancing at best with a 1:1 ratio and often against a numerically superior enemy

    – Prisoner exchanges are still taking place, but not mass exchanges, 15 for 15, 30 for 30

    – The Ukrainian army generally refuses to pick up their dead despite being offered ceasefires to do so

    – The average level of experience in the AFU has dropped significantly since the start of the war, it’s now 20% professionals and 80% conscripts

    – Ukrainian infantry is of very low quality in terms of training & morale; their artillery & special forces are decent

    – The Ukrainians generally don’t accept close quarter combat and retreat instead, but they usually do so in an organized manner

    – The volunteers from all over Russia who are trained in Gudermes (Chechnya) are doing quite well in the war
    tards, some blooded in Syria.

    – This scale of combat is seen for the first time since WW2; Kots has never worked in a conflict of this intensity

    – Russia is not at war with Ukraine, but with the entire NATO infrastructure: intelligence, satellites, communications, military equipment, counter-battery systems, electronic warfare systems

    – “Bayraktars” are absolute crap, they’re fish in a barrel for any decent anti-air

    – The Ukrainians are having problems with some munitions, e.g. their Smerch & Uragan MLRS systems rarely fire in volleys nowadays, mostly single shots

    – Ukrainian artillery is often the only thing slowing down Russian advances

    – Securing Donbass won’t automatically win the war

interfax – Ukrainian army loses up to 100 soldiers killed, up to 500 wounded daily – Reznikov

Up to 100 Ukrainian servicemen are killed and up to 500 are injured daily during the Russian-Ukrainian war, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov has said.

“The situation at the front is difficult. Every day we lose up to a hundred of our fighters killed and up to 500 wounded. The Kremlin continues to push the mass, slips, is subjected to powerful resistance, and suffers huge losses. But so far it has the strength to advance in certain sectors of the front. It is important to maintain concentration Then Ukraine will win!” Reznikov wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

He called the main achievement since the beginning of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation the preservation of the synergy of the entire military-political leadership of Ukraine, and the goal is “to defeat Russia, no matter how difficult it may be.”

The Minister of Defense stated that he was categorically dissatisfied with the pace and quantity of weapons supplied to Ukraine, but at the same time expressed gratitude to the countries that support Ukraine.

WaPo – Ukraine, coping with war losses, adds new polish to military funerals

The mourners arrived well before the military funeral was to begin, entire families crowding around a single coffin, side by side on a warm, sunny morning with other families and coffins.

Two lines of soldiers, perhaps 100 in all, stood at attention as the Rev. Dmitro Povorotny and several other Ukrainian Orthodox priests entered the small cemetery, signaling that the mourners should step back from the caskets so the ceremony could begin.

But one woman, overwhelmed with grief, could not. She sat on a bench crying as relatives comforted her. When a military band began playing Ukraine’s national anthem, she wept harder.

“Glory to Ukraine,” an officer called out.

“Glory to the heroes,” mourners responded.

To visit Krasnopilske cemetery during a military funeral is to experience the brutal sweep of Ukraine’s war with Russia and the terrible intimacy of a family’s loss. Twenty-seven soldiers were laid to rest last Friday. Of those, 12 were buried as unknowns in a military section that grows larger almost by the day.

For Povorotny, the small cemetery on the outskirts of Dnipro speaks to the sacrifice his people have paid in blood since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion on Feb. 24. In just three months, the cemetery’s military section has added 293 graves, compared with 175 in the previous eight years, since war broke out with Moscow-backed separatists in the eastern Donbas region in 2014.

“You can see how the war changed. And this is just one cemetery, one of thousands of cemeteries in Ukraine,” said Povorotny, a military chaplain and archpriest in the Orthodox Church of Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region’s diocese.

Povorotny has conducted about 10 mass burials at the cemetery since the war began, he said in an interview following Friday’s ceremony. Every week, he conducts one or two individual funerals, too. He estimated that more than 700 members of the military have been killed in the Dniepropetrovsk region alone.

But when he looks into the faces of the mourners, he said, he’s convinced he can see their faith in ultimate victory, despite their losses and pain.

“Putin called it a special operation. Before that, they called it a civil war,” Povorotny said, holding a hand over the wooden cross hanging from his neck. “For us, it’s a real war of independence.”

The funerals that occur daily around Ukraine are also unfolding with new protocols that have been rewritten to reflect Western customs, such as those followed by the United States, and uniquely Ukrainian traditions, instead of those inherited from Russia and the Soviet Union.

And they come as the nation discusses creating a new national cemetery in Kyiv that would serve Ukraine as Arlington National Cemetery has served the United States. Volodymyr Vyatrovich, a member of the Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, and a former head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, said in a Telegram post last month that parliament had agreed to create a national cemetery somewhere in or around Kyiv.

To develop new military funeral practices, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory looked at the country’s history of funeral rites, from the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic in the early 20th century to the burial practices among Cossacks, the bands of warriors who roamed Ukraine’s steppes hundreds of years ago. The institute also analyzed the modern military funeral rituals of Belgium, Israel, Poland, Turkey and the United States and visited U.S. military cemeteries.

Their work culminated in a 2019 video by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs that shows in detail how a military funeral should be conducted. Some of the rituals would be familiar to anyone who has attended a funeral with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, including a new practice of draping the casket with the Ukrainian flag before folding and presenting it to the family. The new protocols also stipulate that up to six soldiers may fire three volleys in salute.

At Friday’s services, some of the new rituals were on display, such as the folding of the Ukrainian flag — though perhaps with less spit-and-polish precision than one might find where the custom has been conducted for generations.

The 27 coffins — each draped with a blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flag — were laid out before the ceremony in three neat rows with only enough room to walk between them. A wooden cross was laid atop each, with a sign bearing the soldier’s name in ornate script. And on the coffins containing unidentified remains, the sign said, “Here rests an unknown soldier forever to be remembered.”

Many mourners were dressed in black, including several older women wearing kerchiefs, but others wore T-shirts and shorts. Many were in uniform, including a young soldier whose military-green T-shirt was neatly folded and pinned over the stump of his missing right arm. Another mourner laid her cheek on a coffin, stroking the polished wood with her hand amid a hush so profound that the faint fluttering of the flags could be heard.

“When I look at the flags, it’s like looking at the souls of angels — and there are lots of them, you know?” said Tetyana Kaikova, 34, who attended Friday with family members from around the country for the funeral of her cousin, Serhii V. Sushko. His tank was destroyed on his birthday, May 11, in fighting near the front lines in Donbas.

Though he was pulled from the wreckage, he suffered severe burns and died three days later at a hospital in Dnipro. Sushko, who lived in Kherson and served in a tank crew in the 57th Motorized Brigade, was 49.

When her cousin wasn’t fishing, Kaikova said, he was often in the kitchen whipping up a delicious pot of borscht. Kaikova said she hadn’t seen him in a year or so, but they talked on the phone often about getting together at her dacha, or countryside retreat, for a cookout.

“He was always smiling, always,” said Kaikova, who works in an international trade firm.

Sushko’s once and future wife, Angela Pavluk, was also there to lay him to rest. After 18 years of amicable divorce, she and Sushko were making plans to marry again.

Sushko was proudly self-reliant, self-effacing and patriotic, she said. A firefighter and paramedic, he refused to use a government pass that allowed him to ride public transit free and enlisted in the army soon after war with Moscow-backed separatists broke out in 2014. He didn’t even bother to tell anyone about two military commendations that he had received since February.

“He wasn’t afraid of anything. He went there from Day 1,” Pavluk said.

Marrying again was a decision that came from staying in touch all those years, and sharing in the lives of their three children and a granddaughter, Pavluk said.

“He was a really good father,” Pavluk said. She even set aside coins and stamps that he might like to add to his beloved collection.

In recent months, Sushko became so eager to wed that he offered to renew their vows online, Pavluk said.

“And I said that I do not want to do it that way,” she recalled. “We’ve already had a wedding before, so I just wanted to have a small family gathering. This is something that we wanted to do, but now, well … we just didn’t make it there.”

Instead, there would be a large family gathering, but of a different and terrible kind — to mourn, not celebrate.

During the funeral ceremony, as Povorotny and the other priests intoned the names of the dead and chanted, and the incense smoke drifted through the crowd with the sweet aroma of myrrh and balsam, a thunderous sound rolled over the ceremony as an antiaircraft missile was fired skyward somewhere south of the city.

The rocket cut across the sky, leaving behind a plume of white smoke that rose, twisted and began to dissolve. The priests continued their chanting, uninterrupted, as mourners turned their eyes upward, searching the sky.

    • ctv news – Canada target of Russian disinformation, with tweets linked to foreign powers

OTTAWA – An analysis of over six million tweets and retweets — and where they originate from — has found that Canada is being targeted by Russia to influence public opinion here.

The study by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy found that huge numbers of tweets and retweets about the war in Ukraine can be traced back to Russia and China, with even more tweets expressing pro-Russian sentiment traced to the United States.

Assistant professor Jean-Christophe Boucher said in an interview that the Russian “state apparatus” is associated with many accounts tweeting in Canada, and is influencing posts that are retweeted, liked or repeated by different accounts again and again.

The tweets commonly express pro-Russian talking points, including that Ukraine is a fascist state or that NATO wants to expand, posing a threat to Russia.

The team of experts at the University of Calgary analyzed 6.2 million tweets from around the world and applied algorithms to trace their origins.

It profiled accounts tweeting and retweeting remarks including key terms associated with the war in Ukraine. A location filter was applied narrowing it down to tweets associated with Canadian Twitter profiles.

The team then established connections between accounts and mapped out online conversations about the war.

Algorithms identified clusters and main influencers in Canada and abroad who were promoting pro-Russian narratives.

It found in “the Canadian Twitter ecosystem” discussing the war, around 25 per cent of the accounts were spreading pro-Russian talking points.

Boucher warned that some accounts were “Trojan horses,” with some Canadians unaware the pro-Putin narratives trace their origins back to Russia, China or right-wing influencers in the U.S.

The analysis of the content of the tweets found similar pro-Russian views expressed among right-wing figures and their supporters in the U.S. and Canada, he said.

He said supporters of the “Freedom Convoy” and anti-vaccine movement, some of whom may not realize they have been digesting messaging originating from Russia, were also tweeting messages in support of the invasion of Ukraine.

A lot of the tweets in pro-Russian social media conversations also express mistrust of institutions and “a specific mistrust of Canada’s Liberal government, and especially of Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau,” the report found.

Boucher said “foreign interference in the Canadian information space” is now so pervasive it is sowing distrust in Canada’s democratic institutions, including the federal government and mainstream media.

“Social media has more and more been able to shape people’s view. It weakens our democratic resiliency,” he said. “It creates dissent and erodes trust in institutions.”

He said though foreign bots were being used to spread misinformation on social media, their role was often exaggerated.

Influencers with millions of followers — including in the U.S. — had a broader reach on Twitter than bots and “are retweeting and amplifying Russian narratives.”

The academic found U.S. influencers were tweeting pro-Russian remarks. Some of those posts were, in turn, being retweeted by accounts associated with the Russian state.

Boucher said since completing the study, his team had gathered an additional four million tweets about the Ukraine war, bringing the total to 10 million tweets, and the number was growing.

Boucher said “the path of influence” of many pro-Russian tweets can be traced back to accounts “associated with Russia, including the Russian state apparatus.”

He said “Russian accounts retweet and amplify” pro-Russian tweets in the US and elsewhere.

“We have the state apparatus in Russia and China promoting propaganda.”

  3. In February of 2020, The Lancet published an article about the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) that was widely circulated among doctors. It distorted the reality of the situation and ultimately led to global tyranny in the form of lockdowns, mask mandates and the destruction of the global economy.

Many people might not remember it, but the paper contained purposely deceitful information that associate professor Dr. H. Stupak tweeted “caused the West to collapse its own economies and leadership, causing far more damage than the Kido Butai (task force responsible for Pearl Harbor).”

That article, in case you would like to peruse it for yourself, is available at the National Library of Medicine.

Though the study was directly funded by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Western powers, including those ruling the United States, adopted it as gospel truth when crafting the medical fascism that was incrementally released starting around March of that same year.

  4. Note: living under communism, owning a car was a luxury few could afford, and even if you owned one, using it was very, very expensive so it was for ‘special trips’ and not for daily use. This was a feature of the system: it limited the populace to either only travel the limited distance they could walk, or to the use of the public transit system which was 100% controlled by the government.

It is a parallel to why horse-thieving was seen as one of the worst crimes in the old American West: the horse was how you got to travel and was a means of independence, much as a car is today. It empowered the individual, in ways we forget that car travel empowers us now.

It is in this light that we need to understand the artificial rise in fuel prices – and the commitments by various governments (including Canadian) to ban the sales of gas powered cars. After all, electric cars are not just much less affordable, limiting access to them to just the upper classes, but controlling the electric (and thus charging) grid with rolling brown/black-outs gives the government complete control over the mobility of their citizens.

This next story must be understood in this context: new and improved means to limit the citizens’ means of independent movement by making car ownership out of reach…

Every car must, by law, have car insurance. This is currently the culturally accepted position. So, what would happen if car insurance became dependent on one’s health status?

What would happen if car insurance companies were held accountable – to the tune of millions of dollars – if someone became infected by an illness while in the car of one of their insuerees?

The implications are frightening to their core…yet, that is exactly what this particular legal precedent has set. This is another rather overlooked ruling which will become the precedent for the destruction of Western Culture: woman gets an STD in a car from consensual sex, the car insurance may have to pay $5.2 million in damages…

The following legal ruling can only be understood in terms of dialectic negation of reality:

WASHINGTON (TND) — A California appeals court has ruled four species of bumblebees are legally fish.

And no, this is not a story out of the satirical website The Onion. Rather, it involves the legal definition of bees when it comes to the California Endangered Species Act (CESA).

This all stems from a 2019 lawsuit between large agricultural groups in the state — such as almond and citrus growers — and the California Fish and Game Commission.

The commission wanted to list four bumblebee species — the Crotch, the Western, the Suckley Cuckoo, and the Franklin species — as endangered.

To do so, the commission said bees are invertebrates, therefore falling under CESA’s definition of fish.

    abc news –

Two shots should be given at least 28 days apart to people not previously vaccinated against smallpox, while a single dose is enough for those who had received a smallpox shot before, the advisory panel said. Monkeypox is a rare disease, related to the same virus family as smallpox.

The panel said that people at heightened risk of contracting monkeypox should be given second priority for the vaccine. This includes men who have sex with changing male partners; all of the more than 130 monkeypox cases in Germany so far have involved individuals in that group.

Staff in specialist laboratories who work with infectious samples that contain monkeypox may also belong to the high-risk category, it said.

STIKO’s recommendations are not legally binding but usually followed by German authorities.

The Local DE – Germany expects 40,000 vaccine doses for monkeypox in June

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach says the first batch of vaccines against monkeypox should arrive in June.

In total, Germany expects to receive 240,000 vaccine doses, which have been ordered as a precaution to limit any possible spread of monkeypox.

Lauterbach told public broadcaster ARD: “40,000 units should come in the first two weeks of June, then 200,000 units after that.”

He said that he had signed the contract for the vaccine doses, and was waiting for the company’s response. “But I expect that we will have this vaccine soon,” Lauterbach added.

It is not yet clear who will receive the vaccinations in Germany, but a plan is being prepared.

By Friday May 27th, a total of 16 confirmed monkeypox infections had been reported to the RKI in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt. Further cases are expected.

The Health Minister reiterated that he did not expect a new pandemic to emerge from the monkeypox virus. “I do not believe that monkeypox really poses a threat in the sense of a pandemic,” Lauterbach said during the interview with ARD on Sunday evening. “The potential is not there.”

[…] The vaccine, called Imvanex, is also approved in the United States against monkeypox.

Germany is recommending that anyone who suspects they have monkeypox should isolate for 21 days. They should also contact their doctor or local health authority.

cbc – Hundreds of Montrealers seek vaccine protecting against monkeypox

More than 800 have received a dose since 1st case of virus was detected mid-May

Emil Briones is breathing a sigh of relief after receiving their first dose of the smallpox vaccine, now being offered to help protect Montrealers against the monkeypox virus.

They are one of more than 800 Montrealers so far who have lined up at the clinic in the heart of the Gay Village that’s been offering the vaccine since May 27.

“I’m really happy to have access to this today,” they said Wednesday, standing in line at the clinic just around the corner from Émilie-Gamelin Square.

“I saw [the post about the clinic] on Facebook and you know, just reading up on articles about the outbreaks that are happening, and it is pretty scary.”

A total of 90 cases of the virus have been reported in Quebec to date since the first case was reported in Montreal on May 12. Most of them, 86, have been reported in the Montreal area.

The vast majority of the cases in the province are among adult men who have had sexual relations with men, according to provincial and municipal officials.

Likened to a milder form of smallpox, monkeypox is a rare viral illness that typically begins with symptoms such as fever, headache, backache and fatigue — similar to symptoms of COVID-19 or the flu. The most noticeable symptom is a rash or lesions on the skin.

The virus doesn’t spread easily between people and is generally transmitted through prolonged close contact via respiratory droplets, direct contact with skin lesions or bodily fluids, or through contaminated clothes or bedding

Lawrence Clifford-Reddy was also getting his first dose of the vaccine on Wednesday, and said he’s worried about the stigma it could generate against Montreal’s gay community.

He came down to get the vaccine after hearing about the clinic the day prior. Though the spread of the virus is still limited, there’s always the chance he could be unknowingly transmitting the virus.

“I’m a massage therapist that works for the gay community,” he said. “I’m hands on throughout the whole body, which is higher risk than just sexual contact is.”

“The clinic is right here centred in a hotspot, which is excellent,” he added. “It’s easy to get it, you can stop by during opening hours and it was available so quickly.”

The vaccine against the virus is currently available to those over 18 who have had skin-to-skin contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus, as well as men who have been in sexual contact with two or more men within the last two weeks. No appointments are needed.

Those who believe they may have had close contact with an object contaminated with the virus, such as bedding, can also receive the vaccine. Those with potential symptoms can also test for the virus.

“If you have any worries just come by and we’ll help you out. We’ll let you know if you can receive one or not,” said Danny Raymond, a spokesperson for the health authority representing downtown Montreal, the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal.

Public health officials believe it’s still possible the virus can be contained to the gay community, Raymond said.

A total of 5,000 doses of the vaccine, which also protects against smallpox, have been secured in the province.

Monkeypox comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, which the World Health Organization declared eradicated around the globe in 1980.

The health authority has partnered up with RÉZO, a community organization that provides services for gay and bisexual men, including testing for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV, to help get the word out about the clinic.

Carole Richer, one of the nurses at the clinic, said she’s been impressed by the turnout so far.

“They come in because they’re well-informed and they’re here for prevention. They want to take care of themselves and their health,” she said.

  7. Berlin crash driver a ‘suspected mentally ill man’, investigators say

A teacher killed and 32 injured after a 29-year-old man drove a car into a crowd

Berlin investigators say an incident where a vehicle was driven into a school group on Wednesday morning, killing a teacher and injuring 32, was “a wilful act by a suspected mentally ill man”.

The driver of the car, a 29-year-old German-Armenian resident of Berlin identified only as Gor H, received medical treatment and is now being questioned by police.

Berlin’s governing mayor Franziska Giffey said on Thursday that he appeared to have acted alone — and deliberately. However, it was difficult to be sure, she said, because of “the confused statements he is making”.

One eyewitness spoke of how the man “drove forward into the crowd, then shifted to reverse and drove back into them”.

Another told Bild: “I saw how he drove over the teacher, reversed and rolled over her body once more. I cannot forget the images of the young people lying on the ground.”

Police said the driver received German citizenship in 2015 and is known to them for various convictions for assault, defamation, theft and breach of the peace.

Police said the man was brought to a holding cell on Wednesday at 10pm and that a transfer to a psychiatric facility was likely.

The man’s sister told Bild that her brother suffers from “serious problems”. On Wednesday at 10.28am, at the wheel of her silver Renault Clio, the man drove into a crowd at an intersection of the Kurfürstendamm boulevard.

He then drove a city block on the pavement, crashed the car into a perfume store front and fled into an adjacent sportswear shop. There he was detained by passersby until a nearby police officer intervened and made the arrest.

Hours after the attack, special forces team raided his apartment near the crash scene, but found no explosives or other indications of a terrorist attack.

Mayor Giffey said the attack had “ripped open wounds” left by the 2016 Christmas market attack, a short distance away from Wednesday’s crash site, which left 12 dead.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the attack as a “cruel rampage” that had left him “deeply saddened”.

Seven young people from a visiting school group are still being treated for serious injuries, some life-threatening, while seven other classmates have light injuries.

In addition,17 other passersby in Berlin are being treated medically while, in total, 50 people are receiving psychological assistance.

the guardian -Berlin crash driver had history of paranoid schizophrenia, authorities say

A 29-year-old man who killed a teacher and injured 14 children after driving his car into a crowd in Berlin on Wednesday had a history of suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was probably intending to kill or injure, German authorities say.

“There are no clues pointing to a terrorist motivation behind this deed, and we can also rule out that it was an accident”, said the spokesperson for the Berlin public prosecutor’s office, Sebastian Büchner. “It was probably a deliberate act.”

The Berlin prosecutor said the German-Armenian man’s history of mental health problems meant he was “likely” not legally responsible for his actions and would instead be placed in psychiatric care.

A teacher died and 14 children on a school trip were injured when the German-Armenian driver steered his silver Renault Clio on to the pavement of a busy shopping mile at about 10.30am local time (0930 BST) on Wednesday. After driving back to the main road he crashed into the shopfront window of a cosmetics store.

He fled into a sports store, where shoppers restrained him until police arrived. One witness told Der Spiegel magazine the man had been in a confused state: “He repeatedly asked for help.”

The crash occurred on Tauentzienstrasse in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, adjacent to Breitscheidplatz square, where a rejected Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links drove a hijacked truck into a crowded Christmas market on 19 December 2016, killing 12 people and injuring dozens of others.

Berlin’s mayor, Franziska Giffey, told the broadcaster RBB on Thursday that the previous day’s incident had “ripped open deep injuries and trauma”.

Police investigators were trying, with the help of a language mediator, “to find out more from the partially confused statements he is making”, she said, adding that information was pointing to the incident having been deliberate.

In a statement on Tuesday night, the German capital’s interior senator, Iris Spranger, said latest information about the driver had made the incident look like “a rampage by a really seriously psychologically impaired person” .

Spranger rejected initial reports that a written statement had been found in the driver’s car that could have pointed to a politically or religiously motivated act.

While police found a poster in the car that criticised Turkey for its role in the Armenian genocide during the first world war, it was unclear whether it belonged to the driver or his sister, the registered owner of the vehicle.

Leading theory is that a strain of the common cold has become more severe

[…]Scientists still do not know what is causing the life-threatening liver disease, but they say the chief culprit is a strain of the common cold.

A leading theory is that children’s immune systems have been weakened because of lockdowns and school closures during the pandemic.

The complication has been spotted in around 650 children in Europe, the US, South America, Middle East and Asia.

At least a dozen youngsters have died and tens of children have needed liver transplants. No children have died in the UK.
