3. Respect religious beliefs of Muslims, China tells Sweden

(Is China suggesting that Sweden respect them in the same manner China does? Because otherwise there is enough irony in their statement to cure anemia world wide and for a millennium.)

China, on Wednesday, criticised Sweden after a recent incident took place involving the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, Anadolu News Agency reports.

“Freedom of speech cannot be a reason to incite racial or cultural discrimination and tear society apart,” said Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, referring to the incident that triggered widespread condemnation across the Muslim world.

“We hope Sweden can earnestly respect the religious beliefs of minority groups, including Muslims,” Wang said, according to the Chinese daily, Global Times.

Last week, Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the far-right Stram Kurs (Hard Line) group, burned a copy of the Muslim holy book in Sweden’s southern Linkoping city. He also threatened to burn copies of the Quran in future rallies.

5. CDC issues alert for rare liver damage in children

Doctors should be on the lookout for unusual cases of severe hepatitis in young children. Cases have been reported in Alabama and North Carolina.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking physicians nationwide to be on the lookout for unusual cases of severe hepatitis in children. The agency issued a health advisory on the matter Thursday.

Nine cases have been reported in Alabama, and an additional two have been identified in North Carolina, according to those states’ health departments.

Dozens of such cases have also been identified in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Spain and the Netherlands, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control announced Tuesday.

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, a condition that can result in diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Some of the children in Alabama developed jaundice, and blood tests showed signs of elevated liver enzymes.

A string of severe hepatitis cases in children has doctors across both sides of the pond spooked. Dozens of children in the UK and Europe, as well as some in the U.S., have come down with symptoms of hepatitis not currently explained by known causes. Theories for the outbreak include the resurgence of an existing but usually quieter germ, complications of covid-19, or even the arrival of a novel or mutated virus.
