Reader’s Links for April 3, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • I just got back from walking the dog while listening to this interview.

Down the street near the McDonald’s I heard a flock of Dystopian Geese overhead. Why is it, I have noticed, that every Autumn and Spring when I see them migrating, they never go in the right direction? The arrow of their formation invariably points East or West.

This morning’s flock, however, was headed dead North. These guys were dialed in.

  1. The curious case of Dear Leader selling off the last of Canada’s gold reserve deserves new scrutiny given our emerging new monetary paradigm. I thought it was done as a gesture of fealty to the globalist agenda–a sign if you will–similar to Obama’s New York flyover by Air Force 2, if I am not mistaken, shortly after getting into office. However, here is another interesting Islamic angle on the sell-off:

    https://bradsalzberg.substack.com/p/the-hidden-story-of-trudeaus-sale?s=r

Both rationalizations can be conceivably true considering the furtive and complex globalist machinations.

But if precious metals are set to reassert their roles as the supreme money, what does it mean for a gram-less Canada? More importantly what does it mean for a United States that has not permitted a meaningful public audit of its own reserves in, well, forever? After all it was on the strength of its 8,000+ tons of gold, along with its undisputed superior industrial capacity, that the USD received the world currency crown from the Pound Sterling. So what if Putin calls the hand June 30th and the USA shows a pair of twos to Russia and China’s aces and kings?

An existential threat of such proportions will force America to look practically and hungrily at the plump golden goose exactly within arm’s reach. It is the only attainable hard asset large enough to almost instantly render the U.S. solvent once again. Further, CCP designs on Dystopia’s incredibly rich bounty of wheat, potash, gold, silver, oil–an endless list–will most certainly ignite competition for a land far less sovereign than its paltry population realizes. This geopolitical game of Risk will assuredly play out in some way, given our speed-of-light move into a world valuing real stuff over mere paper, only if the great United States of America retains some semblance of autonomy from the globalist interlopers currently vying and trying for its controlled demolition.

  2. yahoo pravda + reuters – Hungary election “not free and fair” says opposition

STORY: The 49-year-old conservative, cast his vote in his southern hometown Hodmezovasarhely where he is mayor, said Hungarians were now deciding on Orban’s corrupt right-wing populist system which he said neglected democratic rule and curbed press freedom in the past 12 years.

“All the rules have been set so that Orban Viktor will keep his power forever and keep stealing public money forever. So we don’t acknowledge this election to be free and fair at all,” he said.

The opposition leader has framed the election as a choice between East and West. Orban has turned Hungary towards Russia, he says, eroding democratic rights and directing the Central European country away from the European Union where it belongs.

The election is expected to be a tight race, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine playing a central part of the pre-election campaigning.

reuters – Hungarians vote on Orban’s 12-year rule in ballot overshadowed by Ukraine

BUDAPEST, April 3 (Reuters) – The odds were slightly in favour of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, one of Europe’s longest-serving leaders, extending his 12-year rule in an election on Sunday where his close ties with Moscow have come under scrutiny.

With the war in neighbouring Ukraine dominating the campaign, the six-party opposition alliance has been within striking distance of Orban’s Fidesz party in the polls, making the outcome of the ballot uncertain for the first time since Orban swept to power in 2010.

With turnout rising to 52.75% by 1300 GMT after a slow start hampered by unseasonably cold weather and snow in Budapest, both sides took to social media to urge their supporters to go and vote.

The war has made life awkward for Orban after more than a decade of close Hungarian political and business relations with Russia and President Vladimir Putin, but he has retained a lead in opinion polls.

The leader of the opposition, 49-year-old conservative Peter Marki-Zay, has framed the election as a choice between East and West. He says Orban has eroded democratic rights, turning Hungary towards Russia and away from the European Union where it belongs.

Marki-Zay, who queued to vote with his wife and children in Hodmezovasarhely, the southern town where he is mayor, said he hoped the election would “change the course of Hungarian history”.

    ‘FIGHTING FOR DEMOCRACY’

“We are fighting for democracy, we are fighting for decency,” Marki-Zay told reporters. “In an uphill battle, in almost impossible circumstances – we can still win,” he said, referring to government control over public media and changes in election rules that critics say favour Fidesz.

One of the changes allows ethnic Hungarians in neighbouring countries the right to vote on party lists by post, unlike hundreds of thousands of Hungarians working abroad who can only vote by going in person to embassies or consulates.

Orban, casting his vote in snowy Budapest with his wife by his side, told reporters he expected a “great victory” and portrayed the ballot as a choice between “peace or war”, accusing his opponents again of trying to drag Hungary into the Ukraine conflict, a charge they deny.

When asked repeatedly about his close ties with Putin, Orban, who had earlier described relations with Russia as fair and balanced, said:

“Vladimir Putin is not running in the Hungarian elections therefore I do not have to deal with this question today, luckily.”

“I am standing on the basis of Hungarian national interests, I am pro-Hungarian.”

Polls were due to close at 1700 GMT with preliminary indications of the outcome expected within a few hours.

Orban, 58, has portrayed himself as a defender of Hungarian interests by rejecting EU sanctions on Russian oil and gas.

He has, however, condemned the Russian invasion and has not vetoed any EU sanctions against Moscow, even though he said he did not agree with them. His government has also allowed NATO troops to be deployed in Hungary, where public support for membership of the alliance stood at 80% in a 2021 GLOBSEC survey.

He supported an EU decision to send arms to Ukraine but has banned weapons shipments from Hungarian territory, saying this could pose a security risk. His tactical gambit has helped cement his support among core Fidesz voters, but has led to criticism from some allies, including Poland.

    INFLATION WORRIES

In a Budapest constituency, 76-year-old Rudolf Groo criticised Orban’s attempt to position himself between Russia and the European Union, of which Hungary is a member.

“Orban has been swinging from this side to the other so long that now he is unable to take a clear stand on the war.”

With the coronavirus pandemic ebbing, many Hungarians are now troubled by surging consumer prices.

Inflation stood at an almost-15-year high of 8.3% in February, even as Orban imposed retail price caps on fuel and basic foodstuffs, capped mortgage rates, and carried out a pre-election spending spree to support households.

The opposition alliance, which includes the leftist Democratic Coalition, the liberal Momentum and the far-right-turned-moderate Jobbik parties, has tapped into popular discontent, accusing Fidesz of using systemic corruption to enrich businesspeople close to the party.

After years of clashes with Brussels over media freedoms, the rule of law and immigration, Orban’s current campaign is based partly on defending conservative Christian family values against what he calls “gender madness” in Western Europe.

Alongside the election, Hungarians were voting in a referendum on sexual orientation workshops in schools – a vote that rights groups say fuels prejudice against LGBTQ people.

europravda – Polls open in Hungarian election as Orban seeks another term

    • WaPo -AP – Hungarians vote on giving pro-Putin PM Orban a 4th term

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Polls have closed in Hungary’s national election on Sunday in which pro-Putin nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban was seeking a fourth consecutive term.

The contest is expected to be the closest since Orban took power in 2010, thanks to Hungary’s six main opposition parties putting aside their ideological differences to form a united front against his right-wing Fidesz party. Voters were electing lawmakers to the 199-seat parliament.

There were no exit polls but the first results are expected later in the evening. Opinion polls in the last days of the race gave Orban’s Fidesz a slight advantage over the Western-looking coalition of opposition parties.

Opposition parties and international observers have pointed out structural impediments to defeating Orban, highlighting pervasive pro-government bias in the public media, the domination of commercial news outlets by Orban allies and a heavily gerrymandered electoral map.

The Organization For Security and Cooperation in Europe sent a full observation mission to Hungary to monitor Sunday’s election, only the second time it has done so in a European Union country.

Gabor Somogyi, a 58-year-old marketing professional, said after voting that he believes Hungary’s media favors Orban and Fidesz, and has made the election unfair.

“I really count on the monitoring. It’s fine, I’m happy with that. But I don’t really believe (the election) will be clean enough. Even the campaign was not clean enough,” Somogyi said.

Yet despite what it called an uneven playing field, the six-party opposition coalition, United For Hungary, asked voters to support its efforts to introduce a new political culture in Hungary based on pluralistic governance and mended alliances with the EU and NATO.

While Orban had earlier campaigned on divisive social and cultural issues, he dramatically shifted the tone of his campaign after Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February, and has portrayed the election since then as a choice between peace and stability or war and chaos.

While the opposition called for Hungary to support its embattled neighbor and act in lockstep with its EU and NATO partners, Orban, a longtime ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has insisted that Hungary remain neutral and maintain its close economic ties with Moscow, including continuing to import Russian gas and oil at favorable terms.

At his final campaign rally Friday, Orban told supporters that supplying Ukraine with weapons — something that Hungary, alone among Ukraine’s EU neighbors, has refused to do — would make the country a military target, and that sanctioning Russian energy imports would cripple Hungary’s own economy.

“This isn’t our war, we have to stay out of it,” Orban said.

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Saturday depicted the Hungarian leader as out of touch with the rest of Europe, which has united to condemn Putin, support sanctions against Russia and send aid including weapons to Ukraine.

“He is virtually the only one in Europe to openly support Mr. Putin,” Zelenskyy said.

The opposition coalition’s candidate for prime minister, Peter Marki-Zay, has promised to end to what he alleges is rampant government corruption, and to raise living standards by increasing funding to Hungary’s ailing health care and education systems.

After voting in his hometown of Hodmezovasarhely, where he serves as mayor, Marki-Zay called Sunday’s election an “uphill battle” due to Fidesz’s superior economic resources and advantage in the media. But he said he knows “there are more people that want change in Hungary.”

“We are fighting for decency, we are fighting for the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Hungary,” Marki-Zay said. “We are fighting for the whole world. We want to show that this model that Orban has … introduced here in Hungary is not acceptable for any decent, honest man.”

Orban — a fierce critic of immigration, LGBTQ rights and “EU bureaucrats” — has garnered the admiration of right-wing nationalists across Europe and North America. Fox News host Tucker Carlson broadcast from Budapest for a week last summer, where he extolled Orban’s hard-line approach to immigration and his razor-wire border fence.

Orban has taken many of Hungary’s democratic institutions under his control and depicted himself as a defender of European Christendom against Muslim migrants, progressives and the “LGBTQ lobby.”

Peter Sandor, 78, said after voting on Sunday that the stakes of the election were whether Orban could continue to uphold Christian conservatism in Hungary and maintain its national pride.

“The importance of this election is to continue with what we have been building up for the last 12 years. Fantastic results,” he said. “If Fidesz doesn’t win, it’s going to go down the drain again like it did between 2002 and 2010.”

    • Associated Press – Hungary’s pro-Putin PM Orban captures strong lead in vote

[…]With 43% of votes tallied, Orban’s Fidesz-led coalition had won 57% of the vote while a pro-European opposition coalition, United for Hungary, had 31%, according to the National Election Office.

Although vote counting was still underway, all signs pointed to a clear endorsement for Orban’s populist style of governance.

[…]Yet even in his home district, opposition leader Peter Marki-Zay trailed the longtime Fidesz incumbent Janos Lazar by more than 11 points, with 74% of the votes counted there. It was a discouraging sign for the prime ministerial candidate who had promised to end to what he alleges is rampant government corruption and raise living standards by increasing funding to Hungary’s ailing health care and schools.

[…]“We are fighting for decency, we are fighting for the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Hungary,” Marki-Zay said. “We want to show that this model that Orban has … introduced here in Hungary is not acceptable for any decent, honest man.”

[…]Edit Zgut, a political scientist at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, predicted that what appeared to be a clear victory for Orban would allow him to move further in an autocratic direction, sidelining dissidents and capturing new areas of the economy. “Hungary seems to have reached a point of no return,” she said.

[…]Orban — a fierce critic of immigration, LGBTQ rights and “EU bureaucrats” — has garnered the admiration of right-wing nationalists across Europe and North America. He has taken many of Hungary’s democratic institutions under his control and depicted himself as a defender of European Christendom against Muslim migrants, progressives and the “LGBTQ lobby.”

Associated Press – Worried volunteers prepare to monitor Hungary vote

A grassroots civic initiative in Hungary has recruited ballot counters to observe the upcoming high-stakes election in which nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban will seek a fourth consecutive term.

More than 20,000 volunteer ballot counters are being trained to ensure the integrity of the parliamentary elections.

The effort to place at least two volunteer ballot counters in each of Hungary’s more than 10,000 polling places came from a belief among many supporters of Hungarian opposition parties that without observers from their side, vote tally irregularities could affect the outcome of the April 3 ballot.

Recent polls show that Orban, whose Fidesz party has held a nearly uninterrupted two-thirds parliamentary majority since 2010, is likely to face his closest election since taking power.

United For Hungary, a coalition of six opposition parties spanning the political spectrum from liberal to centrist to right wing, has joined together in an effort to overcome what they see as a political, economic, media and electoral system dominated by the right-wing Fidesz and designed to give it an unfair advantage.

Yet while the coalition’s strategy of coordinating its candidates across the country and running a single joint candidate for prime minister is likely to boost its performance on election day, the outcome of the contest in many districts could come down to only a few votes.

Adam Sanyo, a data analyst assisting Let’s Count Together in training the ballot counters, said such a tight race makes accurate and transparent tallying critical.

“We expect to have at least 10 or even 15 very close seats among the 106 constituencies”, he said.

Hungarian supporters of the opposition parties aren’t the only ones that will have their eyes on the April 3 election.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has said it will send a full-scale election observation mission to Hungary, including 18 long-term observers and 200 others on election day — only the second time it has done so in a European Union country.

In 2014, the OSCE called Hungary’s parliamentary elections “free but not fair,” and noted that the 2018 elections were characterized by a “pervasive overlap between state and ruling party resources, undermining contestants’ ability to compete on an equal basis.”

    • bloomberg – General Elections in Hungary Race Is Tight

Two of Europe’s strongmen are bidding to keep their grip on power in elections that have put a spotlight on their close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin after his invasion of Ukraine.

Sunday’s vote showed the two camps were neck and neck.

[…]Next door in Serbia, President Aleksandar Vucic is expected to have an easier path to victory, though is unlikely to repeat a landslide of two years ago.

[…]Orban, 58, who returned to power in 2010 and has shaped Hungary into what he calls his “illiberal democracy,” was quick to back the initial round of EU sanctions against Russia and opened the door to Ukrainian refugees. He balked, though, at allowing Hungary to be a conduit for weapons and stopping flows of Russian oil and gas.

After Orban vowed not to let Hungary “become a sacrificial pawn in someone else’s war,” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy singled him out in an address to a March 24 EU leaders summit, saying it was time he chose what side he was on.

    • Orban: A victory that can be seen from the Moon… and from Brussels

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared a major victory in the general elections.

We never presented ourselves as well as tonight. We won a big victory, it can be seen from the Moon.. and from Brussels, Orban said, sending a message to his many opponents in the EU capital.

It’s estimated that his Fidesz party will win 53.4 percent of the vote against 33.3 percent for the united opposition EM coalition that was hoping to be tied with Fidesz. This outcome may give Orban another super-majority in the Parliament.

This victory we will remember to the end of our lives, because we had to beat complex enemies – the left in the country, the left abroad, the Soros institutions, international media, even the Ukrainian President.

We never had that many enemies in an election, and with all their money, they could not stop us, Orban said.

The North Melbourne Kangaroos community is reeling at the shock news that former player Red Og Murphy has passed away aged 21.

Murphy, who was on the Roos’ list in 2019 after being taken as a Category B rookie, passed away suddenly in Ireland this week, with local authorities yet to confirm the cause of death

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to the Murphy family at this difficult time,” North Melbourne chief executive Ben Amarfio said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with those closest to Red Og, his family and friends in his home in Ireland, and all those who played and worked alongside him and became friends with him during his time at North Melbourne.”

Murphy represented North Melbourne in 12 VFL games in 2019, kicking two goals against Footscray in his final match of the season before returning home at the end of the year.

Back in Ireland, he played for Curry GAA and county Sligo.

Sligo county councillor Martin Connolly told the Irish Examiner: “The parish of Curry is speechless.

“Red Og was probably one of the finest footballers that came out of the area.

“He played for Curry GAA club. He and the Murphy family are highly respected.”

Heartbreaking tributes are being paid to Sligo footballer Red Og Murphy who died suddenly in Dublin on Friday.

[…]A statement issued on Saturday reads: “Sligo GAA is deeply shocked at the untimely death of Red Og Murphy. We knew Red Og as a public figure through his great sporting ability, but he was first and foremost a son and a brother. Our first thoughts are with his family and then his teammates, friends and clubmates.

“Our concern now is to respect the family’s privacy and to support those who knew, played and worked with Red Og as players and coaches and in particular the community of Curry GAA club who will want to remember and celebrate his contribution to their community and their lives.

This is Steve Kirsch’s report on Hawkins Live and Death

The public evidence, as well as information from insiders, shows that the most likely cause of his death was vaccine-induced myocarditis. his drug use, which as far as I have been able to determine was limited smoking of weed.
      Here is what I know:
      1. Found dead in his hotel room on March 25, 2022, after complaining of chest pain.

      2. He was a great guy – – it was all about his music and his fans.

      3. Married for 17 years with 2 kids.

      4. toxicology reports from Columbia authorities claim there were 10 substances found in his body, including opioids, benzodiazepines, marijuana and anti depressants, but there was no mention of the amount of each substance.

      5. an autopsy also found Hawkins heart weighed at least 600 grams as reported by the Colombian publication, Semana.

      6. We know Covid vaccines can cause a heart to double in size and then kill you. This can happen in as little as 5 days after the injection. I.e. the sone of Ernest Ramirez died 5 days after his first Pfizer shot and his heart was double in size at the time of his death. dr. Peter McCullough looked at the medical records for Ernest’s son and concluded his death was due to Covid vaccine. FEMA offered Ernest Ramirez a lot of money to change his story and say his death was caused by Covid. Ramirez refused.

      7. Hawkins had a history of drug abuse, and in 2001 a heron overdose left him in a coma. He made it clear he learned his lesson.

      8. He still smoked weed.

      9. March 25, 2021, Hawkins made it clear he was against masks, lockdowns and Covid vaccines.

      10. Two months later he was under pressure from Dave Grohl and the band manager to take the vaccine.

      11. The June 18 show at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hill, Ca., required that everyone be vaccinated.

      12. Hawkins got the booster on February 26, 2022, just a month before he died.

He was observed shortly before his death and did not appear to be under the influence of any drug. He complained of chest pain.

Bruce Willis may have had aphasia for a while, however aphasia is also a vaccine injury. As of March 25, 2022 the under reported VARES numbers does show 3079 reported vaccine injured people.

A young girl I met months ago, told me she had convinced her elderly healthy parents to get the vaccine. She took them to the vaccine Centre and they all got vaccinated. The next day both her parents died of a brain bleed, and she developed a rash on a lot of her body which he still had months later. She asked me if I thought it was odd that both her parents died of the same thing the next day. Before I could answer, she showed me her rash , and told me the doctor told her it was from anxiety, she did not think so. She said doctors were supposed to do no harm. She said she would not get the second shot and if her work said she must, she would quit.

Perhaps deception is a new art form.

  7. DEUTSCHE PRAVDA – How halal products affect the economy

    ( 42 min 25 )

The term “halal” doesn’t just refer to foods that conform to Muslim law. The word stands for an entire philosophy, and halal products and services are playing an increasingly important role in the economy.

Halal means “permitted” and refers to actions and things that are in accordance with Islam.

The opposite of halal is haram, meaning “forbidden.”

The concept of halal influences Muslims’ entire lifestyle, including diet, clothing, work, leisure, and even love lives.

Different schools of Islamic law mean there are also different interpretations of halal and haram.

Nearly two billion of the world’s population are Muslim, one of the fastest growing social groups.

That amounts to a lot of potential in the marketplace – something that is already being widely exploited in countries like France and England.

Halal products are becoming increasingly important in Germany, too.

The flip side of this growth is what the Chamber of Commerce and Industry calls a “Wild West” situation, as competitors vie for market share in a fiercely competitive halal certification market.

And often, the term “halal” is simply used as a marketing tool.

  10. zero hedge – German Retailers To Increase Food Prices By 20-50% On Monday

[…]… on Monday, Germany will take one step toward a return of the dreaded Weimar hyperinflation, when according to the German Retail Association (HDE), consumers should prepare for another wave of price hikes for everyday goods and groceries with Reuters reporting that prices at German retail chains will explode between 20 and 50%

[…]According to Joachim Rukwied, president of the farming association, the food supply in Germany is assured for at least another year – though after this the forecasts are less certain. With rumors of shortages swirling around, however, supermarket owners have been complaining of the sort of panic-buying not seen since the first months of pandemic.

As previously noted, German supermarkets have even started limiting the purchase of cooking oils and flour in particular to prevent a mad rush to stock up on items that customers believe will run out. In other words, limit the sale of those products which are in highest demand, also known as a “brilliant strategy.”

And now that everyday food product prices are about to surge as much as 50%, it will be interesting to watch how much longer the German population will condone a NATO stance that has been seeking to stoke and perpetuate the war in Ukraine.

  11. global news – It’s time for new tools to boost uptake of third doses, child vaccination: experts

TORONTO — Ontario is entering a sixth wave of COVID-19 with few remaining public health measures and experts say now is the time for a renewed vaccination strategy aimed at boosting third-dose uptake, shots for kids and preparing for wider fourth doses.

When first and second doses became available, Ontario — and Canada at large — was the envy of the world in how quickly the population got vaccinated, said Dr. Fahad Razak, an internist and member of the province’s science advisory table.

But while 91 per cent of Ontarians 12 and older have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, only about 60 per cent have received three.

“A lot of the energy and the innovation that went into getting the first and second doses in, we haven’t been able to replicate that magic to the same extent for the third dose,” Razak said.

“We have to make sure that the messaging about moving towards a period of less public health measures ? that does not mean that the risk to an individual or the risk to people over time has diminished if they still get infected.”

Two doses are effective at preventing severe illness, but three doses can cut the risk of infection even against the Omicron variant and are still important, Razak said. Infection means people can’t work, kids can’t go to school, and brings a risk of lingering complications known as long COVID.

Infectious diseases expert Dr. Isaac Bogoch said Ontario is likely in better shape than the sheer percentage of boosters would suggest. Two doses plus infection provides roughly the same protection as three doses, Bogoch said, and millions of Ontarians have been infected since the Omicron variant emerged late last year.

But there is still much room for improvement in booster coverage, particularly among vulnerable people, and Ontario has not made enough use of behavioural change experts in figuring out how to communicate its vaccination messages, Bogoch said.

“When we stop and take a 30,000-foot view of what we’re trying to do here, what we’re trying to do is change people’s behaviour,” he said.

“It is not sufficient to have, you know, me — a boring, middle-aged doctor — get on TV and say, ‘Get your vaccine,’ or a senior political or public health official give a press conference and change policy at 3 p.m. on a weekday.”

Another strategy that could help get more people vaccinated is making better use of family medicine, Razak said.

“I think one of the most underutilized resources in the entire pandemic has been family doctors,” he said.

Making them a larger part of the vaccine strategy would help Ontario deliver any additional doses because there’s no need to ramp up an external infrastructure, Razak said.

“Of course, if there’s time pressures … you can use that mass vaccination strategy. But every year and every time it shouldn’t be a mass vaccination strategy. It should be closer to influenza.”

Whether additional booster doses come annually, like flu shots, or they are needed on a different schedule isn’t yet known, but experts say it’s likely more doses will be rolled out. Regardless, the planning should happen now, Bogoch said.

“We can be proactive and have a plan in place so that we’re not trying to do influenza vaccines in concert with … COVID vaccines,” he said.

“Even telegraphing that we’re planning to do it, we just don’t know what the policy is going to look like. There’s a lot of heavy lifting that can be done ahead of time to prepare for potential vaccine rollout.”

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, the medical officer of health for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, said he is developing contingency plans to redeploy staff to mass vaccination clinics for whenever fourth doses are more broadly rolled out. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization is expected to release guidance on fourth doses in early April.

Many public health units are closing their mass clinics in favour of pop-up clinics and hyper-local strategies. Toronto has been running time-limited clinics at transit stations and libraries.

When it comes to children aged five to 11, however, Roumeliotis said the issue isn’t one of location, but parental fears.

“It has nothing to do with accessibility because they can virtually walk into any clinic any time and get vaccinated,” said the doctor, who is also president of the Association of Local Public Health Agencies.

About 56 per cent of children in that age group have at least one dose and 33 per cent have two.

Roumeliotis’s health unit is trying to educate parents and answer any questions they may have through town halls, seminars with schools, social media outreach and a video campaign, he said.

Ontario is also set to receive its first shipment next week of Novavax, which is a more traditional vaccine, without the mRNA technology used by Pfizer and Moderna. The experts said it’s unlikely it will have much of an effect on vaccination rates, as anyone still unvaccinated at this point will probably remain so.

A one-dose, non-mRNA vaccine by Johnson and Johnson has been available in Ontario since early December upon request and 3,134 doses of J&J have been administered in the province as of March 31.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Kieran Moore, said earlier this year he was excited about the pending arrival of Novavax and hoped it appeals to people who don’t want an mRNA vaccine.

Moore ended his weekly briefings last month and denied several requests over three weeks by The Canadian Press for an interview about the province’s vaccine strategy going forward.

A spokeswoman for Health Minister Christine Elliott sent a statement about what the province has already done on vaccination, including communications, a mobile bus vaccine clinic, holding school-based clinics, and increasing hours of vaccine clinic operation to help reach communities with lower rates.
