Reader’s Links for March 29, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. The function of money, deeper than as a medium of exchange, is to allow for the division of one’s own labour. It enables some of our toil to be used to purchase necessary goods and services, and the excess (if we are lucky enough to have any) to be placed into savings or capital for future investment. The highest form of money, precious metals, is such because it is divisible, portable, sufficiently rare, durable, and fungible, meaning it is universally recognized and accepted. With respect to durability (beyond the physical) it retains constant value vis-a-vis fiat because, unlike fiat, it has no counter-party risk.

At the start of a game of chess there are only 20 moves available: eight pawns and two knights for each player. 400 moves are available after each player makes one move. The options grow exponentially from there into near infinite variations. For example there are 288 billion possible positions after each player has made four moves. Yet, by the end of a game, the loser has nowhere to go, so variations are arced. The resourceful loser, if he is aware of his weak position, maneuvers for stalemate. Stalemate is a resource that can sometimes come as a surprise to he who is over confident of his success:

  5. NYT – Covid Live Updates: F.D.A. Authorizes Second Boosters for Those 50 and Older and Some Immunocompromised People

Federal regulators authorized second booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna coronavirus vaccines on Tuesday for everyone 50 and older. The move came after the Biden administration decided it should seek to bolster waning immunity in older Americans in case the virus sweeps the nation again in the coming months.

The Food and Drug Administration also authorized a second booster from the two vaccine makers for individuals with certain immune deficiencies, such as those who have undergone solid organ transplants. Those 12 and older can get Pfizer’s shot while immunocompromised adults can pick between Pfizer’s or Moderna’s.

The agency said the additional shot can be given at least four months after a first booster for both for those 50 and older, and for those with weakened immune systems.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to issue advice on who should consider getting the shot as early as Tuesday afternoon. As of late last week, officials were planning to present the second booster essentially as an option that older Americans or people with underlying medical conditions should consider, rather than recommending it outright.

The F.D.A. made the decision with scant data, as an interim measure to strengthen protection for older Americans and others considered especially vulnerable until the fall. At that point, federal health officials say everyone likely will need another shot. There is some hope that by then, scientists will have developed vaccines that work better against the variants that have emerged over the past four months.

The idea that another shot is necessary now, just six months after federal regulators authorized the first round of boosters, could add to fatigue with Covid vaccines. With each additional dose, fewer and fewer Americans have gotten it, according to federal data.

On the other hand, evidence now suggests that the government’s decision last fall to authorize a first booster — the subject of much scientific debate at the time — saved lives during the winter Omicron wave.

The strongest data in support of a second booster came from a newly released Israeli study that has not yet been peer reviewed. During a 40-day period earlier this year, the researchers studied Covid death rates among more than half a million adults 60 to 100 years old who had received at least one booster.

Among the 234,868 who had only one booster, 232 people died of Covid. Among the 328,597 people who got a second booster, 92 died of Covid. The mortality rate “was significantly lower among those who had received an additional booster,” the researchers said.

Federal officials also studied statistical models that suggested that if the virus surges again in late spring or summer, a second booster could save thousands of lives and avoid tens of thousands of hospitalizations.

Dr. Peter Marks, who oversees the F.D.A.’s vaccine division, said in a statement: “Current evidence suggests some waning of protection over time against serious outcomes from Covid-19 in older and immunocompromised individuals. Based on an analysis of emerging data, a second booster dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna Covid-19 vaccine could help increase protection levels.”

The F.D.A.’s decision was complicated because no one knows how long protection from a second booster will last. Pfizer and BioNTech have said data during the Omicron wave shows the potency of an initial booster wanes within three to six months against both symptomatic infection and severe disease.

Dr. Paul Burton, Moderna’s chief medical officer, told CNN on Monday that the virus’s mutations had weakened the vaccines’ shield. “The only way that we’re going to get to a period of stability and ultimately to an endemic disease is to keep people protected, keep their antibody levels up, and I’m afraid that means regular boosting,” he said.

Both companies have an obvious financial incentive to promote their shots: Both are projecting tens of billions of dollars in Covid vaccine sales this year.

The F.D.A. did not convene a meeting of its outside committee of experts before issuing its authorization, sparking criticism. Dr. Eric Rubin, a panelist and an infectious diseases expert at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said he was not upset that the committee did not meet, given that the vaccines are no longer new. But he said it was critical for the agency to make any data it relied upon publicly available for others to scrutinize.

He also said “each additional dose is offering marginal value,” and what is really needed now is a reconfigured vaccine that works better against the new variants. Many studies are now underway to find it, but the earliest results are not expected until about May.

Still, Cheryl Shell, a 71-year-old retiree in the town of Spring Arbor in southern Michigan, said she will get a second booster. She got her first booster in November, she said, and she is concerned about waning potency. “I gotta go for any protection I can get,” she said.

  7. 3rd terror attack in Israel in a week:

Palestinian terrorist kills five in Bnei Brak shooting spree
Video shows terrorist opening fire at passersby in Tel Aviv suburb; gunman shot dead; Bennett holds security consultation as terror wave fears rise following 2 previous attacks
    https://www.timesofisrael.com/palestinian-gunman-kills-five-in-bnei-brak-terror-spree/?utm_source=article_hpsidebar&utm_medium=desktop_site&utm_campaign=liveblog-march-29-2022
Five people were killed when a Palestinian terrorist opened fire on passersby in Bnei Brak on Tuesday night, marking the third deadly terror attack in Israel in a week.
The gunman was killed by police following a rampage just before 8 p.m. that saw him open fire on people out walking, riding bikes, or driving in their cars in the Tel Aviv suburb. The attack is expected to further ratchet up fears of a wave of violence ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Four of the victims were declared dead at the scene, with a fifth added to the fatalities after being rushed to the Beilinson Medical Center, officials said.
The victims were not immediately named. Security officials identified the shooter as Diaa Hamarsheh, 27, a Palestinian from the town of Ya’bad near Jenin.
According to police, Hamarsheh arrived in the city in a vehicle, disembarked, and began opening fire with a large rifle. He killed three people at the first location, before running to a second location several hundrd feet away and killing two more at the entrance to a corner store.
A video from the first scene showed a man with a rifle standing in a parking area of a residential building shooting into the street as a young man in ultra-Orthodox garb runs away.
Moments later, the shooter aims at a person riding past the area on a bicycle, but does not shoot him. He then calmly walks into the street, yells in Hebrew for an approaching car to “stay still” before shooting the driver, who crashes his vehicle into the building.
The gunman is then seen running away, apparently to the second scene.
Video from there showed him chasing a person on a bicycle near a busy street and trying unsuccessfully to shoot them before running toward a store.
The gunman was eventually shot dead at a third location, according to police. However, officers were searching for possible accomplices. Hebrew-language media reports said a second suspect was detained at the scene.
It was not immediately clear how Hamarsheh entered Israel. He previously served time in Israeli prison for membership in a terror group.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was to hold a security consultation with senior defense officials following the attack.

The attack came at a time when security forces were already on heightened alert, after two attacks committed by terrorists inspired by Islamic State left several people dead in the past week.

On Sunday, two police officers were killed in a shooting attack in Hadera. The Arab Israeli gunmen were affiliated with the jihadist group.

Five days before then, four people were killed in a terror attack in the southern city of Beersheba. The terrorist — previously convicted of attempting to join the Islamic State — was shot dead by passersby. He was also an Israeli citizen.
Police had bolstered forces in areas where there was a threat of violence, following the attack in Hadera. The Israel Defense Forces has also bolstered troops in the West Bank.
Israeli forces arrested 12 people with suspected Islamic State ties overnight between Monday and Tuesday. More arrests were expected following Tuesday’s attack.
Tensions have risen between Israel and the Palestinians in recent weeks across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Ten Palestinians were killed in violent confrontations with Israeli troops: some died in gun battles with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank, while others during attempted attacks.
Last weekend, two officers were hurt in a suspected stabbing attack in East Jerusalem’s Ras al-Amud neighborhood, and an Israeli man was stabbed and lightly hurt when he was out jogging on Jerusalem’s Hebron Road.
Earlier this month, there were several attacks in Jerusalem’s Old City, and in a nearby West Bank town.
Israeli officials have expressed fears that violence could ratchet up alongside Ramadan, which begins in early April.

    • Jerusalem Deputy Mayor to Blinken: ‘Please Leave Our Capital’

Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Arieh King on Monday called on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to leave the city, saying he was “UNWELCOME” there and that his presence was “creating a bad feeling.”

Blinken, who was in Israel for the first leg of a brief tour of the Middle East and North Africa, had tweeted a condemnation of the terror attack in Hadera on Sunday evening, which claimed the lives of two Israeli Border Police officers.

“We condemn today’s terrorist attack in Hadera, Israel. Such senseless acts of violence and murder have no place in society. We stand with our Israeli partners and send our condolences to the families of the victims,” wrote Blinken.

The Islamic State terrorist organization took credit for the attack, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute.

In an English-language typo-laden reply, King wrote, “Dear sir. May I ask you as a deputy mayor of Jerusalem, the Jewish holy capital, to leave our city?

You are not welcome at all. Your visit to Jerusalem is creating a bad feeling [among] most … Jerusalem residents. It seems that you intend to create [a] provocation. Please leave our capital.”

  9. Retired IRGC General: Russia Should Not Be Mediator in Nuclear Talks – It Is Our Economic Rival

Russia should not serve as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran in the nuclear talks. He explained that Russia is untrustworthy and that it stands to lose from the nuclear agreement since it would enable Iran to take some of Russia’s share in the oil and natural gas market in Europe, particularly now that Russia is facing economic sanctions because of the Ukraine crisis.

Rather, he said that Iran should talk directly with the United States and sign a deal without Russian, Chinese, or European mediation.
