  1. Dig the symbolism of this. Can you imagine BLM protesters building a house between tearing down statues and burning buildings? Can you imagine a BLM protester who has ever held a hammer, for that matter?

  12. CBC – MPs vote to call GoFundMe to testify at Commons committee on convoy protest

Committee asking company to explain how it’s ensuring funds are not being used to “promote extremism”

A parliamentary committee has voted unanimously to call officials from the popular crowdfunding site GoFundMe to answer questions about a fundraiser that has collected more than $10.1 million to support the anti-vaccine mandate protest in Ottawa.

The motion, proposed by NDP MP Alistair MacGregor, calls on company officials to appear before the House of Commons committee on public safety and national security “as soon as possible.”

Liberal, Conservative and Bloc Québécois members of the committee joined MacGregor in voting to invite the company to testify.

The committee wants the company to answer questions about measures in place to “ensure the funds are not being used to promote extremism, white supremacy, anti-Semitism and other forms of hate, WHICH HAVE BEEN EXPRESSED AMONG PROMINENT ORGANIZERS FOR THE TRUCK CONVOY currently in Ottawa.”

The committee also wants the company to explain how it prevents anonymous donations and money from abroad from funding extremist groups, and what it’s doing to ensure that the money already released to the protest is not being used to promote extremist views and activities.

An amendment proposed by Liberal MP Taleeb Noormohamed calls on officials from the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) — Canada’s money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog — to also appear before the committee.

“There are some real questions about transparency given the fact that the fund is now exceeding $10 million, many of the donors are anonymous and many of the donors are in places outside of Canada’s jurisdiction,” MacGregor told CBC News.

A CBC News analysis of the donations last week found that at least a third of the donors to the “Freedom Convoy 2022” fundraising campaign on GoFundMe were listed as anonymous or used invented names. In the comments section, a number of donors said they were located in other countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or Poland.

The committee’s decision comes a day after GoFundMe put the convoy protest’s fundraising campaign on pause, saying it had questions of its own about how the money was going to be used that organizers had not yet answered.

Before the company paused the campaign, it had raised more than $10.1 million from more than 120,000 donors.

Meanwhile, some donors to the convoy protest fundraiser have been posting on social media that GoFundMe has told them their donations are being refunded.

In a statement issued Thursday, GoFundMe refused to answer any questions regarding refunds. It has not yet reacted publicly to the committee calling it to testify.

During a news conference held by protest organizers Thursday, Keith Wilson of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms said that the convoy protest has taken steps to formally incorporate and set up bank accounts.

GoFundMe has said that $1 million of the money raised has been released to organizers. Wilson said lawyers and accountants working with the organizers are working on a process to reimburse protest participants once GoFundMe releases the rest of the money.

GoFundMe takes down Canada’s Freedom Convoy fundraiser.

GoFundMe has deleted Canada’s Freedom Convoy fundraiser for violating its terms, stating the “peaceful demonstration has become an occupation” now.

$9 million funds to be sent to “credible charities.”

UPDATE: GoFundMe Statement on the Freedom Convoy 2022 Fundraiser

GoFundMe supports peaceful protests and we believe that was the intention of the Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser when it was first created.

We now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful demonstration has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.

To ensure GoFundMe remains a trusted platform, we work with local authorities to ensure we have a detailed, factual understanding of events taking place on the ground.

Following a review of relevant facts and multiple discussions with local law enforcement and city officials, this fundraiser is now in violation of our Terms of Service (Term 8, which prohibits the promotion of violence and harassment) and has been removed from the platform.

Organizers provided a clear distribution plan for the initial $1M that was released earlier this week and confirmed funds would be used only for participants who traveled to Ottawa to participate in a peaceful protest. Given how this situation has evolved, no further funds will be directly distributed to the Freedom Convoy organizers — we will work with organizers to send all remaining funds to credible and established charities verified by GoFundMe.

All donors may submit a request for a full refund until February 19th, 2022 using this dedicated refund form.

I want to sincerely thank the team at @gofundme
for listening to the plea made by the City and the Ottawa Police to no longer provide funds to the convoy organizers.

In light of the unlawful behaviour that has transpired in the last few days, they have come to the right decision in support of our city and our residents.

These protesters have been holding our city hostage for a week now, and I’m hopeful that limiting their access to

funding and resources will restrict their ability to remain in Ottawa.

I am imploring similar crowdfunding platforms to take the same position and not enable the group in its fundraising efforts, which would deal a blow to our efforts to put an end to this occupation.

    • zero hedge – GoFundMe ‘Steals’ $9 Million From Canada’s “Freedom Convoy” Truckers Under Pressure From Trudeau

Despite initially refusing to cave to pressure from Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and his allies, GoFundMe announced late Friday evening that it had decided not to disburse any more money to the “Freedom Convoy” and its supporters gathered in Coutts, Alberta and Ottawa. Users will now need to request a refund of their donation, or risk the possibility that the company will instead reroute it to an “approved” charity.

As Rebel News Editor-in-Chief Ezra Levant reported in a tweet, GoFundMe has decided to take – or some might say steal – the roughly CAD$9 million that was supposed to be used to pay for supplies like gas, food and other necessities for the truckers and instead dole that money out to charities of the company’s choosing, unless donors fill out a request form.

Why the company has decided on this policy, instead of instating automatic refunds for donors, isn’t clear. But as Levant joked, “what a windfall” for Black Lives Matter, Greenpeace and Planned Parenthood.”

  14. city news -OTTAWA Convoy counter protest

…. Ottawa residents are fed up and are planning a counter protest for Saturday.

    • ctv news – Tow truck companies rejecting Ottawa police request for help: source

Local towing companies are rejecting Ottawa police requests for help towing ‘Freedom Convoy’ trucks out of the downtown core, according to a senior police source.

The source told CTV News Ottawa that even if police decided to tow the trucks from the downtown streets they have been clogging up for the past week, they wouldn’t have enough tow trucks to do it.

Police outreach to tow truck companies across the city has been rebuffed, the source said.

The source said police are considering launching a criminal investigation into whether intimidation of the tow truck companies is leading to their lack of cooperation with police.

Police would only have access to city-owned tow trucks used for OC Transpo buses, of which there are a limited number.

Asked about the concern on Friday, Mayor Jim Watson said that information had not been brought to him, but the city has its own fleet of tow trucks.

“All contingency plans are being worked on,” he told CTV News on Friday. “The city has a number of heavy industrial tow trucks as well, so there’s that availability, plus other companies that the city deals with on a pretty regular basis.”

Ottawa Police Deputy Chief Steve Bell said Friday there are between 200 and 250 trucks parked in the downtown core.

Police expect another 300 to 400 truck drivers to try making their way downtown this weekend, but they are setting up roadblocks and planning to direct the truckers to parking spots outside the core.

Until now, the police strategy with the remaining truckers was primarily one of negotiation. That succeeded in reducing their numbers throughout the week.

Friday morning, police said they are adopting a “surge and contain strategy,” which includes sending 150 more officers to affected neighbourhoods and barricading the protest “red zone” to cut off people who want to drive downtown.
