Reader’s Links for January 6, 2022

Apologies. I thought I had prepared a slew of these up to the 15th but I did not!

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Thursday that COVID-19 vaccines would remain voluntary and he would rely on trying to persuade people to have their jabs rather than introducing mandatory vaccination policies.

He also criticized those against the vaccine, often called “anti-vaxxers,” for “spouting complete nonsense” and describing their social media messages against the jab as “mumbo jumbo.”

The prime minister also said he wanted to persuade people hesitant about getting the vaccines to get them, but the task was made harder by the spread of misinformation.

    • Moderna CEO warns people may need fourth Covid shot as efficacy of boosters likely to decline over time

Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said the efficacy of boosters against Covid-19 will likely decline over time, and some people may need a fourth shot by the fall.

“I would expect that it’s not going to hold great,” Bancel said, during a Goldman Sachs interview, referring to the strength of the single booster shots.

A random mutation could change the course of the pandemic again, Bancel warned.

Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel on Thursday said the efficacy of boosters against Covid-19 will likely decline over time, and people may need a fourth shot in the fall to increase their protection.

Bancel said people who received their boosters last fall will likely have enough protection to get them through the winter, when new infections surge as people gather indoors to escape the cold.

However, Bancel said the efficacy of boosters will probably decline over the course of several months, similar to what happened with the first two doses. The Moderna chief was interviewed by Goldman Sachs during the investment bank’s health-care CEO conference.

“I will be surprised when we get that data in the coming weeks that it’s holding nicely over time — I would expect that it’s not going to hold great,” Bancel said, referring to the strength of the booster shots.

An unprecedented surge of infections from the highly contagious omicron variant is currently spreading worldwide. In the U.S., the seven-day average is now more than 574,000 new cases daily, according to a CNBC analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

The Moderna CEO said governments, including the U.K. and South Korea, are already ordering the doses in preparation. “I still believe we’re going to need boosters in the fall of ’22 and forward,” Bancel said, adding that people who are older or have underlying health conditions might need annual boosters for years to come.

“We have been saying that we believe first this virus is not going away,” Bancel said. “We’re going to have to live with it.”

Moderna published preliminary data last month that showed its currently authorized 50 microgram booster shot increased the antibodies that block infection from omicron 37-fold. A 100 microgram booster increased those antibodies 83-fold.

Booster shots are playing an increasingly important role in public health strategies to control the virus, with protection from the original two shots having taken a significant blow from omicron.

Data from the United Kingdom found that Moderna and Pfizer’s two-dose vaccines are only about 10% effective at preventing symptomatic infection from omicron 20 weeks after the second dose.

The same study, published by the U.K. Health Security Agency, found that booster doses are up to 75% effective at preventing symptomatic infection two weeks after receiving the shot.

However, the efficacy of booster shots starts to decline after about four weeks, according to the study. Boosters were 55% to 70% effective at preventing infection at weeks five to nine, and 40% to 50% effective 10 weeks after receiving the shot.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told CNBC last month that people will likely need a fourth dose, and the shot may be needed sooner than expected due to omicron’s virulence.

Bancel, during the Goldman Sachs interview, said omicron could accelerate the transition from the acute crisis caused by the virus to an endemic phase where enough people have immune protection so that Covid isn’t as disruptive to public life.

However, he also cautioned against predictions, noting that omicron, with its dozens of mutations, took most of the scientific community by surprise. The data so far indicates that omicron is more transmissible but less severe than past strains.

However, a random mutation could change the course of the pandemic again, Bancel said.

“What is totally impossible to predict, is there a new mutation coming in a day, a week, three months that is worse in terms of severity of disease,” he said. “That’s a piece that we’ll have to just be cautious about.”

  3. Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev got $1,400 COVID relief payment

Prosecutors are now asking judge to order Bureau of Prisons to turn over that money to pay Tsarnaev’s outstanding criminal penalties

BOSTON — Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received a $1,400 COVID relief payment, and now federal prosecutors want that and other cash in his prison account for his victims from the 2013 attack.

In a filing Wednesday, Nathaniel R. Mendell, acting United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, asked the court for an order authorizing the Bureau of Prisons to turn over to the Clerk of the Court all funds, including any funds subject to administrative hold by BOP, held in the inmate trust account for Tsarnaev.

The feds want the money “as payment towards his outstanding criminal monetary penalties, including unpaid special assessment and restitution.”

Tsarnaev was sentenced to death after being convicted in 2015 for the bombings.

He’s in federal custody at the United States Penitentiary Florence ADMAX penitentiary.

“As of December 22, 2021, the Defendant has approximately $3,885.06 in his inmate trust account,” say prosecutors.

According to the document filed Wednesday, “After the Defendant’s sentencing, deposits into the Defendant’s inmate trust account became more frequent.”

    Prosecutors say the deposits include:

    a. The Defendant received a $1,400 COVID relief payment on June 22, 2021.

    b. Between May 2016 and June 2021, the Defendant received multiple deposits from the Office of Federal Defenders of New York. The amounts varied between $40 and $250, totaling approximately $11,230.

    c. Between August 2015 and August 2021, an individual residing in Indianapolis, Indiana made monthly deposits between $30 and $60, totaling approximately $2,555.

    d. Between August 2015 and December 2017, an individual residing in Bloomfield, New Jersey made monthly deposits of $50, totaling approximately $1,450.

    e. Between September 2013 and December 2018, an individual residing in Frederick, Maryland made periodic deposits between $50 to $200, totaling approximately $950.

Tsarnaev also received a total of $3,486.60 from 32 other individuals, according to the document.

Prosecutors say Tsarnaev, “although not making payments to his victims, has made payments to other third-parties. The largest payment the Defendant made from his account was paid to his siblings for items such as ‘gifts,’ ‘support,’ and ‘books.’ These payments totaled $2,000.”

“In light of the Defendant’s payment history and incarceration status, the United States requests that this Court enter an Order authorizing the BOP to turn over all funds, held in the Defendant’s inmate trust account, including any funds subject to an administrative hold by BOP, to the Clerk of Court as payment toward the outstanding criminal monetary penalties imposed against the Defendant.”

“The United States submits that the requested relief is reasonable and appropriate in this instance, especially in light of the Defendant prioritizing payments to his siblings over the victims of his crimes.”

  8. Ukraine, Europe – Shoulder to Shoulder

“Ukraine and the European Union are standing shoulder to shoulder in counteracting the aggressive policy of Russia.” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba at a joint press conference with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission (HR/VP) in Stanytsia Luhanska, eastern Ukraine, on Jan. 5, 2022…

Borrell tanked [sic] the Ukrainian side for the invitation to visit Ukraine, reiterate support for it and witness the destructive effects of Russia’s war against Ukraine along the ‘contact line’ in Luhansk….

“Spheres of influence” of great powers do not belong in 2022 emphasized Borrell strongly. Ukraine is part of Europe and “there is no security in Europe without the security of Ukraine,” and any discussion about Ukraine and European security must have the participation of both Ukraine and Europe.

In this context the E.U. leader affirmed that intensive discussions were ongoing with the U.S., NATO and other partners and allies in support of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and right to self determination.

  9. Some US officials do not understand situation in Kazakhstan – official

“We are talking about the collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO. The decision was made collectively in response to the request of the legitimate authorities of Kazakhstan,” she added.

  10. Rioters’ actions in Kazakhstan show terrorism patterns – senior lawmaker

MOSCOW, January 6. /TASS/. Peaceful protest cannot be accompanied by looting and violence. The events in Kazakhstan demonstrate the patterns of external terrorist intervention, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky wrote in his Telegram on Thursday.

“Peaceful protest has its own limits and cannot be accompanied by vandalism, arson, looting, intimidation of the population and armed rebellion against the legitimate authorities. And to make matters worse – blocking hospitals and beheading law enforcement officers. We have already witnessed this, including in Syria and Iraq, this is a clear pattern of external terrorist intervention,” the official wrote.

Slutsky stressed that the introduction of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the CSTO is “the only possible and right way to normalize the situation in Kazakhstan as well as to ensure the general stability in the region.”

“We cannot accept rampant terrorism and armed aggression on the streets of a fraternal country where many of our compatriots still have their relatives, parents, brothers and sisters,” he concluded.

  11. The U.S. Directed Rebellion in Kazakhstan May Well Strengthen Russia

In early 2019 the Pentagon financed think tank RAND published an extensive plan for soft attacks on Russia.
    https://media.washtimes.com/media/misc/2019/04/24/RAND_RR3063.pdf

The 350 pages long report recommended certain steps to be taken by the U.S. to contain Russia. As its summary says:

[…T]hese steps are conceived of as elements in a campaign designed to unbalance the adversary, leading Russia to compete in domains or regions where the United States has a competitive advantage, and causing Russia to overextend itself militarily or economically or causing the regime to lose domestic and/or international prestige and influence.

    [ 6 ‘geopolitical measures’ , the 1st 4 have been implemented:]
The U.S. delivered lethal weapons to Ukraine, it increased its support for ‘rebels’ in Syria. It attempted a regime change in Belarus and instigated a war between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The U.S. is now implementing measure 5 which aims to ‘reduce Russia’s influence in Central Asia’.…

The actions in Almaty, the country’s largest city and former capital, are certainly not spontaneous reactions by a crowd of poor laborers but controlled actions by well trained groups of armed ‘rebels’.

=> List of demands of protestors….
While most demands focus on bolstering social & economic support & countering corruption points #1, 7, 10, 13, 16 expose the roots of protest & who’s driving them

#1 demands that #Kazakhstan should leave Eurasian Economic union.
#7 demands legalization of polygamy “for certain groups of the population” & prohibition on marriage with foreigners
#10 demands independence for Mangystau region &^that revenues of oil companies remain in Mangystau

CAVEAT: this list been circulating a lot on telegram – could be fake or not representative of what protestors want, thou it appears protestors are a diverse group that includes genuinely disgruntled people, political manipulators, “prof revolutionaries” (that were in UKR & BEL), etc

  12. You need a strong stomach to read comments at Moon of Alabama, but the horrible people include some who know the regional dynamics quite well.

Color Revolution, yes, but possibly generated by the Filthy Turk:
“Great Turania: that is, the success of the pan-Turkist aspiration to create a state uniting the Turkic-speaking peoples in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and even for that matter in the Russian federal republics of the Volga region, the Urals, and the North Caucasus.”
    …….
“Another indication of a Color Revolution under way in Kazakhstan is that protests have flared up, at the same time yet apparently “spontaneously”, in cities close to Kazakhstan’s borders with other countries and regions also being targeted for regime change.

“Aktau (and Mangystau region) faces the Caspian Sea across to Dagestan (in Russia) and Azerbaijan, with Turkmenistan not far away either. Almaty in the extreme southeast part of Kazakhstan is close to Kyrgyzstan, itself a site of Color Revolution activities, and Xinjiang (in China). Both these parts of Kazakhstan may very well have served as transit points for jihadists travelling on fake Turkish passports from Xinjiang on their way to the Middle East.

“Perhaps we ought to ask where the thugs who overrun legitimate protests in Aktau and Almaty by setting fore to buildings, beheading police officers, insisting on legalizing polygamy and outlawing marriage between Kazakhs and non-Kazakhs (read: Russians) come from…”

    • Filthy Turk’s mouthpiece:
Daesh, Gülenists behind riot in Kazakhstan: Former Russian MP Balbek

Members of Daesh and Gülenist terrorist groups are behind the ongoing riots in Kazakhstan, a former member of the Russia’s State Duma said in a statement late Thursday…

“The hands of ISIS are visible in organizing riots on the territory of Kazakhstan,” he said.

“It is in their style – brutal killings and absurd demands,” Balbek added.

“But those Kazakhs, who were trained in Turkey at the educational institutions of Fetullah Gülen, the organizer of the coup attempt in Ankara, are at the helm,” he said, referring to the schools – which are now under Turkish government control – formerly run by the Gülenists.

Protesters “picked up an ideological virus” from Fetullah Gülen, the leader of the Gülenist cult, Balbek concluded.

Blackout in effect in Kazakhstan again as new operations are underway by security forces. CSTO (Russian) troops also deployed. It’s a big series of events, but also has me wondering what else is ahead as things continue to spiral…

One big question is what is the cost that the Kazakh government and Tokayev will pay for CSTO help, primarily from Russia. Over the years of covering Kazakhstan inside and outside the country, the Kazakhs were always clever about being able to keep some independence from Moscow..

Russia has always been influential there and both regimes are like-minded in many ways, but Kazakhs were able to hold their own line when it came to important issues, such as Crimea and turning the Eurasian Union into a deeper political project.

I recall being told once by a senior Kazakh official a funny story about the great lengths Kazakh diplomats and handlers went to make sure that Nazarbayev didn’t have his photo op with Putin by a display for Crimea that Russian diplomats were trying to herd them towards

Other times on background, officials would mention how they resisted efforts to expand the Eurasian Union and block changes pushed by Moscow that would give it more authority over the bloc and political and economic influence on its members.

Given that Tokayev is essentially being proped up by Moscow now, it’s hard to imagine them having much bargaining power in the future and Moscow is obviously going to push for concesisons when the time is right. It’s a new era for Kazakhstan and the region.

  13. ITALY – TORINO – Whatever it Takes! We will never give up! A Cry for Help from Italy University Students

Italy is turning into a sanitary regime. We make our plea to all of you to stand up for democracy and freedom of choice, against vaccine coercion and discriminations based upon individual decisions about personal health

We decided to make this video, hoping for international support and solidarity, we are constricted both physically and mentally and we are not the only ones in the world. We want you to know that you are not alone and that we are willing to fight side by side with you, with all the other countries that are willing to change the current situation in order to create a better world.

We are no longer the happy and democratic land that our politicians and media are trying to depict with their false narrative. Italy is now a country where any kind of freedom and human rights are ceasing to exist.

Day by day, Italy is becoming a truly authoritarian and apartheid-based sanitary regime, led by a powerful and self-assertive Prime minister, who can act without any real scrutiny, limitation or accountability. The system of check and balances among the three powers has been sabotaged by Mario Draghi, who nullified the primacy of the Parliament, by overthrowing its established role as the lawmaker entity of this country.
Such a coup happened with the acquiescence, if not the complicity, of the totality of the Italian institutions, judicial authorities and political parties, including the so-called “opposition block”. Most of all, our President Sergio Mattarella, the Head of State, whom we Italians entrust as the impartial “Keeper of the Constitution”, has decided to quietly approve any kind of decision made by Draghi’s cabinet, nullifying his role as impartial figurehead.

Indeed, the President of the Republic is now openly supporting the climate of reproach and stigmatisation against unvaccinated people in his public speeches. Something that the government has been encouraging for the past two years.

As far as we are concerned, we can’t study, work, and live with serenity, but, despite all the odds, we will keep on fighting for our constitutional rights, freedom of choice and our right to study.

We are standing up for democracy.

  14. 2021:
Turkey is becoming More Entrenched in Central Asia

Ankara’s strategic goal has always been to develop and consolidate strong military, political, and economic ties with both Azerbaijan and the countries in Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan).

Against the backdrop of how the Central Asian republics formed their national identity, secured strategic and economic autonomy, and upgraded their infrastructure, Ankara has recently been trying energetically to close the loop between itself and these countries in most of these areas, pushing Russia and China, which traditionally have influence in this region, into the background.

In recent decades, Ankara’s expansionist ambitions have begun to grow especially rapidly, with President Erdogan’s emphasis on consolidating the “territory of Turan” as a global supranational entity that unites both Turkic and other peoples across Central Asia and Siberia.

And the turning point in this regard was, of course, creating the Turkic Council in 2009, which Erdogan hopes to use to force the region’s leaders to lay down the groundwork for cooperating as a single political bloc, and to create a unified, visa-free space by 2040.

[…]“Turkic world” is being promoted by Ankara as a specific foreign policy doctrine, along the same lines as the “Russian world” and “Eurasian unity”, and with the help of that – after Azerbaijan’s victory in the Karabakh war in South Transcaucasia – Turkey expects to receive access to Central Asia through the Caspian Sea….

Ankara began to build relations in Central Asia by actively applying the tried-and-true method used by the West of involving various NGOs to change political priorities and orientations in the region’s countries….

  15. Pravda:
Another ‘revolution of dignity’ sparks in Kazakhstan. Where will the country go?

Noteworthy, the riots are especially violent in the south of Kazakhstan, whereas the situation in the north of the country is relatively quiet. This prompted experts to assume that Kazakhstan may split into two parts, one of which will take a pro-Russian orientation, and the other one will be opposed to it.

Turkey and China may also have plans about Kazakhstan. Sinologist Nikolai Vavilov suggested that the purpose of the crisis in Kazakhstan was to pull the country out from the Collective Security Treaty Organisation so that it could subsequently enter into close military cooperation with Turkey, and through it with NATO….
