Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • DEUTSCHE PRAVDA – COVID protests in Germany become more frequent and more extremist

Demonstrations against coronavirus restrictions are becoming more frequent and more violent — with many ending in clashes with police.

Authorities say right-wing extremists are exploiting the situation to push their own agenda.

Some politicians are facing a campaign of intimidation.

Protesters with flaming torches recently showed up outside the home of the health minister in the eastern state of Saxony.

And earlier this week, police siezed weapons in a series of raids after death threats were made against Saxony’s state premier.

The government has warned of growing radicalization.

But some who’ve spent their lives fighting extremism say the threat has always been there – it’s just becoming more visible.

Police raided several locations in the eastern German city of Dresden on Wednesday after online threats were made against state Premier Michael Kretschmer and other members of the Saxony state government.

In Dresden, police searched five properties, and another place was being searched in the nearby town of Heidenau.

Prosecutors said five men and a woman, aged between 32 and 64, were targeted in the investigation.

All of them are German nationals.

Police have reason to believe the suspects were preparing to carry out violent acts. Officials in the German state of Saxony said “murder plans” against Premier Kretschmer were discussed via the Telegram messaging app.

Death threats posted online and targeting Kretschmer were connected in large part with potential COVID-19 restrictions such as the possibility of mandatory vaccinations.

Saxony has both one of the highest COVID-19 caseloads in Germany and one of the lowest vaccination rates.

It was also once part of the former East Germany, where some vaccinations were mandatory by law.

Dresden, the capital of Saxony, has seen numerous demonstrations against the government’s COVID-19 policies and vaccines.

The latest raids come just days after a group of far-right extremists held a torchlit rally in front of the home of Saxony’s Health Minister Petra Köpping.

  2. WaPo – Germany: Merkel’s party chooses conservative Merz as leader

BERLIN — Members of Germany’s biggest opposition party, the center-right Christian Democratic Union of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, have chosen prominent conservative Friedrich Merz as its new leader, the party said Friday.

Merz, making his third run for the CDU’s top post, beat two centrist contenders and won a strong mandate — taking 62.1% support in a ballot of the party’s membership. A party congress next month will have to sign off officially on the membership vote, but that should only be a formality.

Armin Laschet, the CDU’s leader since January, is stepping down after leading the two-party Union bloc to its worst-ever election result in September, winning only 24.1% of the vote. The bloc, which the CDU dominates, was narrowly beaten by the center-left Social Democrats of new Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Merz, 66, has experience of being an opposition leader. He led the center-right group in parliament from 2000 to 2002, when Merkel pushed him out of that job. He left parliament in 2009, later practicing as a lawyer and heading the supervisory board of investment manager BlackRock’s German branch.

Merz returned to parliament in the September election. The online and postal ballot of the CDU’s roughly 400,000-strong membership was a first for the party. It said that nearly two-thirds of members took part.

Merz’s rivals were left far behind in the ballot. Norbert Roettgen, a former environment minister who has chaired parliament’s foreign policy committee in recent years, finished with 25.8% support in his second bid for the party post.

Helge Braun, who was Merkel’s chief of staff from 2018 until she left office last week, won 12.1%.

Merz failed to win the party leadership by fairly narrow margins at party conventions in 2018 and in January, losing first to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and then to Laschet.

Both subsequently struggled to impose their authority. A fight for the nomination to run for chancellor between Laschet and Markus Soeder, the leader of the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, also exposed divisions.

Merz pledged Friday to “stand for the party in its full breadth” and said he would work to ensure that “different political opinions and directions” have a place.

“We won’t engage in fundamental opposition,” he said. “We will be a constructive opposition.”

Merkel gave up the party leadership in 2018 and announced that she wouldn’t seek a fifth term as chancellor.

Lars Klingbeil, the co-leader of Scholz’s Social Democrats, congratulated Merz and said he looked forward to a “fair, democratic competition.”

“I think it’s great that there’s a culture of third chances in our country,” Klingbeil wrote on Twitter.

New Finance Minister Christian Lindner, whose Free Democrats long allied with the CDU but partnered with Scholz after this year’s election, said he looks forward to a “fair competition for the best ideas.”

    • French government will push to transform ‘health pass’ into a ‘vaccine pass’

French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, has announced a raft of new Covid-19 measures, covering everything from Christmas gatherings to a radical transformation of the health pass.

French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, said that the government would push to transform the health pass into a vaccine pass, in January.

“Only vaccination will be taken into account with the vaccine pass,” he said, following a meeting of France’s Covid Defence Council.

This proposition would have to be approved by the French parliament. It would mean that proof of recent recovery from Covid and negative Covid test results would no longer be accepted as a means to access certain public venues like bars, restaurants, cinemas and gyms.

The Prime Minister also announced that the window in which people become eligible for a third (booster) dose of anti-Covid vaccine would be reduced from five months to four months . This change does not need parliamentary approval and will come into force on January 3rd.

      Christmas gatherings

Castex recommended that families avoid large meetings over Christmas and encouraged testing before festive gatherings.

“The less of us there are, the less we are taking risks,” he said.

Castex called on city authorities to ban fireworks and concerts on New Year’s Eve. He said that prefectures around the country would prohibit alcohol consumption in public spaces.

France makes vaccination compulsory for restaurants and bars

France will make vaccination against Covid-19 all but compulsory from January by converting the health pass used for access to bars and restaurants and some workplaces into a “vaccine pass”, prime minister Jean Castex announced on Friday.

“In January we will reinforce the incentive to get vaccinated,” he said in a televised address to the nation. A draft law would be debated to strengthen the permit system already in place and to crack down on the fake passes that have emerged. “From now on, only vaccination will be valid for the pass,” Castex said.

French health passes are currently valid even for the unvaccinated if the holder can show evidence of a recent negative test or of having recovered from the disease.

Although the latest wave of the Delta variant of the virus appeared to be reaching its peak, several hundred cases of the much more infectious Omicron variant had already been detected in France. “We reckon this will spread very rapidly and be dominant at the start of next year,” Castex said.

France has banned tourism and non-essential business travel from the UK from midnight on Friday to slow the spread of the Omicron variant and give overburdened hospitals time to prepare.

Although 90 per cent of the French over 12 years old are double vaccinated – and a record 950,000 doses were administered on Friday as the country rolls out its booster campaign of third jabs – Castex said more than 6m had still not been vaccinated, and these unprotected people made up the bulk of those needing medical treatment for severe Covid.

The delay of the booster dose reduced again in France: the announcements of Jean Castex facing “the fifth wave” in France

Faced with the Omicron variant which is beginning to prevail throughout Europe, the French government has decided to advance the Defense Council, initially scheduled for December 22, to this Friday.

Prime Minister Jean Castex took the floor with an update on the health situation in France: “The fifth Delta wave is here and there. It continues to strongly affect us with more than 50,000 cases per day, even if it seems to be approaching its peak “, did he declare.

“Added to this situation is the progression of the Omicron variant. We believe that this variant will become dominant from the start of 2022, as is already the case in the United Kingdom”, he continued. Faced with hospitals already under pressure, the Prime Minister announced new measures. “To better prepare and protect ourselves, we must take new measures ““.

First the Prime Minister began by recalling the barrier gestures and the rules of social distancing. “The fewer we are, the less risk we take, in order to avoid uncontrollable clusters“. Castex appeals to the common sense of the French. While nightclubs are already closed, concerts and fireworks will now be banned on the evening of December 31,” said Jean Castex.

Then the Prime Minister insisted on the importance of vaccination. “Our best weapon, our only weapon in reality, is vaccination. To win this race against the variant we must further accelerate the campaign,” he said. he makes it known. So “From January 3, the recall will be possible as soon as we have passed the 4-month deadline for the second injection “, announces Jean Castex.

The government also wants to strengthen the incentive for vaccination. To do this, a bill will be submitted to parliament in early January to transform the health pass into a vaccination pass. Thus, only “the vaccination will be taken into account in the vaccination pass” and the tests will no longer be valid.

Jean Castex has also announced a measure aimed at caregivers, who are suffering from the health crisis. Overtime pay will be doubled in hospitals from Monday.

SOT, Karl Lauterbach, German Health Minister (German): “Even a somewhat milder course would not make a difference. It would perhaps keep the number of deaths low for two or three weeks. We have to assume that the omicron wave we are facing, which I don’t think we can prevent, will be a massive challenge for our hospitals, for our intensive care units, but also for society as a whole.”

  9. Pfizer plans to test a third dose of its COVID vaccine on infants and young children

Pfizer-BioNTech announced Friday that they will expand ongoing clinical trials of their COVID-19 vaccine in children to include a third dose for participants as young as 6 months old.

Testing a third dose will cause a delay in submission of data to regulators to authorize use in the U.S. In the fall, Pfizer’s CEO said the company expected to have data for this age group by the end of 2021. Now, the company says that they would expect to file results in the “first half of 2022” if trials are successful.

The companies said two doses did not produce a robust immune response in kids 2 to 5 years old.

The companies, which produced the first vaccine against coronavirus infection authorized for use in the U.S., said they had made the decision “following a routine review by the external independent Data Monitoring Committee,” which acts as a watchdog over the clinical trials.

“The study will now include evaluating a third dose of 3 [micrograms] at least two months after the second dose of the two-dose series to provide high levels of protection in this young age group,” the companies said in a statement.

“No safety concerns were identified and the 3 [microgram] dose demonstrated a favorable safety profile in children 6 months to under 5 years of age,” they said.

So far, the Food and Drug Administration has only authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for emergency use in children aged 5 and older.

Research has indicated that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is less effective against rapidly spreading omicron variant than for previous strains of the virus. However, a booster dose has been shown to add significant protection. Earlier this week, Moderna announced similar results for its vaccine.

Last month, the FDA authorized a third booster dose of either vaccine for all U.S. adults.

“The data are illustrating the impact of a booster and that our vaccine works best as a primary regimen of three doses,” Pfizer’s chief scientific officer, Mikael Dolsten, said on a conference call, according to Reuters.

Pfizer also said it was developing a vaccine tailored to combat the omicron variant of the virus — which has spread rapidly around the globe in recent weeks. The company hopes to start clinical trials on the updated omicron-specific vaccine in January.

Pfizer also said 30 million of a planned 80 million treatment courses of its Paxlovid antiviral pill will be available in the first six months of 2022.

    ===================================

Pfizer is testing a third Covid vaccine dose in young kids, delaying trial results

The company said data suggest that people vaccinated with three doses may have a higher degree of protection.

Pfizer and BioNTech are testing a third dose of their Covid-19 vaccine in an ongoing trial of children ages 6 months to under 5 years after the companies found that the two-dose regimen didn’t generate a strong enough immune response in some children, the companies announced Friday.

The change to the trial protocol means that the companies won’t have data to submit to regulators until the first half of 2022. That’s a change from earlier this month, when Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said the company could have data on young kids by the end of this year.

In a news release posted Friday, the companies said two doses of the vaccine generated a strong immune response in kids under age 2, comparable to what was seen in a trial of 16- to 25-year-olds, but not in the cohort of children ages 2 to under 5.

Kathrin Jansen, Pfizer’s head of vaccine research, said on a conference call with investors Friday that data on variants, including omicron, suggest that people vaccinated with three doses of the vaccine may have a higher degree of protection than those with two doses.

“Therefore, we have decided to modify each of the pediatric studies to incorporate a third dose to the series and seek licensure for a three-dose series rather than a two-dose series as originally anticipated,” Jansen said.

Jansen’s comment comes as health experts debate whether the definition of “fully vaccinated” should be amended to include a booster shot.

Federal health officials are urging all eligible people in the United States to get boosters to combat the threat of the omicron variant. Initial data suggest that three shots of the mRNA vaccines provide adequate protection against the new strain.

Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, criticized Pfizer’s move, saying evidence to date shows that two doses of the vaccine still protect against severe disease.

“To me, the goal of this vaccine is the prevention of serious illness,” he said, adding that goal doesn’t seem to be shared by many others at this point.

“The goal is no longer just protection against serious illness but protection against infection,” he said. “That is not a goal we have for any other vaccine.”

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Toronto, said that with the emergence of the delta variant and the rise in breakthrough infections, it is clear that the Pfizer vaccine should be a three-dose vaccine for adults.

But when it comes to kids getting three doses, Bogoch said, “I have no idea. As always, we cannot treat kids as little adults.”

Pfizer’s two-dose series has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for kids as young as 5, but only those 16 and up are eligible for a booster.

Pfizer and BioNTech said Friday that an ongoing study for kids ages 6 months to under 5 years will now include a third dose containing 3 micrograms of mRNA given at least two months after the second dose. The companies have been testing the 3 micrograms doses for the age group, and 10 micrograms doses for kids 5 to 11. Everyone ages 12 and up receives 30 microgram doses.

If the trials are successful, the companies said they expect to submit data to regulators to support an emergency use authorization for children ages 6 month to under 5 years in the first half of 2022 with this three-dose series.

The companies said they plan to evaluate a 10-microgram booster in children ages 5 to 11. They’ve also initiated a study to test a third dose of 10 micrograms or 30 micrograms in about 600 kids ages 12 to 17.

Boosters of the Pfizer vaccine for 16- and 17-year-olds were cleared last week.

  12. DAILY MAIL – Switzerland will hold referendum on outlawing the introduction of mandatory vaccinations

The law would ban all vaccinations and implants without individual’s consent
Swiss Freedom Movement have collected 125,000 signatures to trigger vote
Incoming president said he would consider mandatory vaccines ‘as a last resort’

Switzerland is set to hold a referendum on whether all mandatory vaccinations should be banned.

The Swiss Freedom Movement (MLS) association collected 125,000 signatures, 25,000 more than required, to trigger the vote.

While mandatory vaccinations are not in place at the moment, they are currently allowed in Swiss law and the incoming president has said he would consider their use.

MLS is calling for the Swiss Constitution to be amended to include the fundamental right of each citizen to decide for themselves whether to be injected or implanted by anything.

The initiative says: ‘The person concerned must not be punished for having refused to give his consent, nor suffer social or professional disadvantages.’

The law would apply to Covid as well as ‘other vaccines, chips and digital information that would be implanted in the body’.

Swiss authorities have said mandatory vaccinations will not be enforced but the Epidemic Act does allow for compulsory jabs in extreme instances.

And the incoming president Ignazio Cassis said he would consider mandatory vaccines ‘as a last resort’ to curb infections.

Cassis, who takes office on January 1, is a trained doctor and said ‘mandatory vaccination can be useful’.

The date for the referendum in Switzerland’s famously democratic system has not yet been set but will likely take place in 2022.
