Reader’s Links for November 18, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. A great, simple litmus test to which governments are against their people is which governments are trying to shut down domestic fuel production. It only makes vulnerable these nations to predatory pricing from Islamic jurisdictions, which can hardly be classified as “ethically-sourced” oil. Pipeline shutdowns in North America are another good example:

THE SPIN WAR – Revealed: Documents Show Bill Gates Has Given $319 Million to Media Outlets

Sifting through over 30,000 grants in the company’s database, MintPress can reveal that the Gates Foundation has bankrolled hundreds of media outlets and ventures, to the tune of at least $319 million.

SEATTLE — Up until his recent messy divorce, Bill Gates enjoyed something of a free pass in corporate media. Generally presented as a kindly nerd who wants to save the world, the Microsoft co-founder was even unironically christened “Saint Bill” by The Guardian.

While other billionaires’ media empires are relatively well known, the extent to which Gates’s cash underwrites the modern media landscape is not. After sorting through over 30,000 individual grants, MintPress can reveal that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has made over $300 million worth of donations to fund media projects.

Recipients of this cash include many of America’s most important news outlets, including CNN, NBC, NPR, PBS and The Atlantic. Gates also sponsors a myriad of influential foreign organizations, including the BBC, The Guardian, The Financial Times and The Daily Telegraph in the United Kingdom; prominent European newspapers such as Le Monde (France), Der Spiegel (Germany) and El País (Spain); as well as big global broadcasters like Al-Jazeera.

The Gates Foundation money going towards media programs has been split up into a number of sections, presented in descending numerical order, and includes a link to the relevant grant on the organization’s website.

    Media Trust – $100,000
New York Public Radio – $77,290
KUOW – Puget Sound Public Radio – $5,310
Together, these donations total $166,216,526. The money is generally directed towards issues close to the Gateses hearts. For example, the $3.6 million CNN grant went towards “report[ing] on gender equality with a particular focus on least developed countries, producing journalism on the everyday inequalities endured by women and girls across the world,” while the Texas Tribune received millions to “to increase public awareness and engagement of education reform issues in Texas.” Given that Bill is one of the charter schools’ most fervent supporters, a cynic might interpret this as planting pro-corporate charter school propaganda into the media, disguised as objective news reporting.

The Gates Foundation has also given nearly $63 million to charities closely aligned with big media outlets, including nearly $53 million to BBC Media Action, over $9 million to MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, and $1 million to The New York Times Neediest Causes Fund. While not specifically funding journalism, donations to the philanthropic arm of a media player should still be noted.

Gates continues to underwrite a wide network of investigative journalism centers as well, totaling just over $38 million, more than half of which has gone to the D.C.-based International Center for Journalists to expand and develop African media.

    These centers include:

    International Center for Journalists- $20,436,938
Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (Nigeria) – $3,800,357
The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting – $2,432,552
    Fondation EurActiv Politech – $2,368,300
    International Women’s Media Foundation – $1,500,000
Center for Investigative Reporting – $1,446,639
    InterMedia Survey institute – $1,297,545
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism – $1,068,169
    Internews Network – $985,126
Communications Consortium Media Center – $858,000
Institute for Nonprofit News – $650,021
The Poynter Institute for Media Studies- $382,997
Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (Nigeria) – $360,211
Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies – $254,500
Global Forum for Media Development (Belgium) – $124,823
Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting – $100,000
In addition to this, the Gates Foundation also plies press and journalism associations with cash, to the tune of at least $12 million. For example, the National Newspaper Publishers Association — a group representing more than 200 outlets — has received $3.2 million.

The list of these organizations includes:

    Education Writers Association – $5,938,475
National Newspaper Publishers Association – $3,249,176
    National Press Foundation- $1,916,172
    Washington News Council- $698,200
American Society of News Editors Foundation – $250,000
Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press- $25,000
This brings our running total up to $216.4 million.

The foundation also puts up the money to directly train journalists all over the world, in the form of scholarships, courses and workshops. Today, it is possible for an individual to train as a reporter thanks to a Gates Foundation grant, find work at a Gates-funded outlet, and to belong to a press association funded by Gates. This is especially true of journalists working in the fields of health, education and global development, the ones Gates himself is most active in and where scrutiny of the billionaire’s actions and motives are most necessary.

Gates Foundation grants pertaining to the instruction of journalists include:

    Johns Hopkins University – $1,866,408
    Teachers College, Columbia University- $1,462,500
    University of California Berkeley- $767,800
    Tsinghua University (China) – $450,000
    Seattle University – $414,524
Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies – $254,500
Rhodes University (South Africa) – $189,000
    Montclair State University- $160,538
    Pan-Atlantic University Foundation – $130,718
    World Health Organization – $38,403
    The Aftermath Project- $15,435
The BMGF also pays for a wide range of specific media campaigns around the world. For example, since 2014 it has donated $5.7 million to the Population Foundation of India in order to create dramas that promote sexual and reproductive health, with the intent to increase family planning methods in South Asia. Meanwhile, it alloted over $3.5 million to a Senegalese organization to develop radio shows and online content that would feature health information. Supporters consider this to be helping critically underfunded media, while opponents might consider it a case of a billionaire using his money to plant his ideas and opinions into the press.

    European Journalism Centre – $20,060,048
World University Service of Canada – $12,127,622

    Total: $97,315,408

    • $319.4 million and (a lot) more

Added together, these Gates-sponsored media projects come to a total of $319.4 million. However, there are clear shortcomings with this non-exhaustive list, meaning the true figure is undoubtedly far higher. First, it does not count sub-grants — money given by recipients to media around the world. And while the Gates Foundation fosters an air of openness about itself, there is actually precious little public information about what happens to the money from each grant, save for a short, one- or two-sentence description written by the foundation itself on its website. Only donations to press organizations themselves or projects that could be identified from the information on the Gates Foundation’s website as media campaigns were counted, meaning that thousands of grants having some media element do not appear in this list.

A case in point is the BMGF’s partnership with ViacomCBS, the company that controls CBS News, MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, and BET. Media reports at the time noted that the Gates Foundation was paying the entertainment giant to insert information and PSAs into its programming and that Gates had intervened to change storylines in popular shows like ER and Law & Order: SVU.

However, when checking BMGF’s grants database, “Viacom” and “CBS” are nowhere to be found, the likely grant in question (totaling over $6 million) merely describing the project as a “public engagement campaign aimed at improving high school graduation rates and postsecondary completion rates specifically aimed at parents and students,” meaning that it was not counted in the official total. There are surely many more examples like this. “For a tax-privileged charity that so very often trumpets the importance of transparency, it’s remarkable how intensely secretive the Gates Foundation is about its financial flows,” Tim Schwab, one of the few investigative journalists who has scrutinized the tech billionaire, told MintPress.

Also not included are grants aimed at producing articles for academic journals. While these articles are not meant for mass consumption, they regularly form the basis for stories in the mainstream press and help shape narratives around key issues. The Gates Foundation has given far and wide to academic sources, with at least $13.6 million going toward creating content for the prestigious medical journal The Lancet.

And, of course, even money given to universities for purely research projects eventually ends up in academic journals, and ultimately, downstream into mass media. Academics are under heavy pressure to print their results in prestigious journals; “publish or perish” is the mantra in university departments. Therefore, even these sorts of grants have an effect on our media. Neither these nor grants funding the printing of books or establishment of websites counted in the total, although they too are forms of media.

      Low profile, long tentacles

In comparison to other tech billionaires, Gates has kept his profile as a media controller relatively low. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s purchase of The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013 was a very clear and obvious form of media influence, as was eBay founder Pierre Omidyar’s creation of First Look Media, the company that owns The Intercept.

Despite flying more under the radar, Gates and his companies have amassed considerable influence in media. We already rely on Microsoft-owned products for communication (e.g. Skype, Hotmail), social media (LinkedIn), and entertainment (Microsoft XBox). Furthermore, the hardware and software we use to communicate often comes courtesy of the 66-year-old Seattleite. How many people reading this are doing so on a Microsoft Surface or Windows phone and doing so via Windows OS? Not only that, Microsoft owns stakes in media giants such as Comcast and AT&T. And the “MS” in MSNBC stands for Microsoft.

      Media Gates keepers

That the Gates Foundation is underwriting a significant chunk of our media ecosystem leads to serious problems with objectivity. “The foundation’s grants to media organizations…raise obvious conflict-of-interest questions: How can reporting be unbiased when a major player holds the purse strings?” wrote Gates’s local Seattle Times in 2011. This was before the newspaper accepted BMGF money to fund its “education lab” section.

Schwab’s research has found that this conflict of interests goes right to the very top: two New York Times columnists had been writing glowingly about the Gates Foundation for years without disclosing that they also work for a group — the Solutions Journalism Network — that, as shown above, has received over $7 million from the tech billionaire’s charity.

Earlier this year, Schwab also declined to co-report on a story about COVAX for The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, suspecting that the money Gates had been pumping into the outlet would make it impossible to accurately report on a subject so close to Gates’s heart. Sure enough, when the article was published last month, it repeated the assertion that Gates had little to do with COVAX’s failure, mirroring the BMGF’s stance and quoting them throughout. Only at the very end of the more than 5,000-word story did it reveal that the organization it was defending was paying the wages of its staff.

“I don’t believe Gates told The Bureau of Investigative Journalism what to write. I think the bureau implicitly, if subconsciously, knew they had to find a way to tell this story that didn’t target their funder. The biasing effects of financial conflicts are complex but very real and reliable,” Schwab said, describing it as “a case study in the perils of Gates-funded journalism.”

MintPress also contacted the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for comment, but it did not respond.

Gates, who amassed his fortune by building a monopoly and zealously guarding his intellectual property, bears significant blame for the failure of the coronavirus vaccine rollout across the world. Quite aside from the COVAX fiasco, he pressured Oxford University not to make its publicly-funded vaccine open-source and available to all for free, but instead to partner with private corporation AstraZeneca, a decision that meant that those who could not pay were blocked from using it. That Gates has made over 100 donations to the university, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, likely played some role in the decision. To this day, fewer than 5% of people in low-income countries have received even one dose of COVID vaccine. The death toll from this is immense.

Unfortunately, many of these real criticisms of Gates and his network are obscured by wild and untrue conspiracy theories about such things as inserting microchips in vaccines to control the population. This has meant that genuine critiques of the Microsoft co-founder are often demonetized and algorithmically suppressed, meaning that outlets are strongly dissuaded from covering the topic, knowing they will likely lose money if they do so. The paucity of scrutiny of the world’s second-richest individual, in turn, feeds into outlandish suspicions.

Gates certainly deserves it. Quite apart from his deep and potentially decades-long ties to the infamous Jeffrey Epstein, his attempts to radically change African society, and his investment in controversial chemical giant Monsanto, he is perhaps the key driver behind the American charter school movement — an attempt to essentially privatize the U.S. education system. Charter schools are deeply unpopular with teachers’ unions, which see the movement as an attempt to lessen their autonomy and reduce public oversight into how and what children are taught.

All the way to the bank

In most coverage, Gates’s donations are broadly presented as altruistic gestures. Yet many have pointed to the inherent flaws with this model, noting that allowing billionaires to decide what they do with their money allows them to set the public agenda, giving them enormous power over society. “Philanthropy can and is being used deliberately to divert attention away from different forms of economic exploitation that underpin global inequality today,” said Linsey McGoey, Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex, U.K., and author of No Such Thing as a Free Gift: The Gates Foundation and the Price of Philanthropy. She adds:

The new ‘philanthrocapitalism’ threatens democracy by increasing the power of the corporate sector at the expense of the public sector organizations, which increasingly face budget squeezes, in part by excessively remunerating for-profit organizations to deliver public services that could be delivered more cheaply without private sector involvement.”

Charity, as former British Prime Minister Clement Attlee noted, “is a cold grey loveless thing. If a rich man wants to help the poor, he should pay his taxes gladly, not dole out money at a whim.”

None of this means that the organizations receiving Gates’ money — media or otherwise — are irredeemably corrupt, nor that the Gates Foundation does not do any good in the world. But it does introduce a glaring conflict of interest whereby the very institutions we rely on to hold accountable one of the richest and most powerful men in the planet’s history are quietly being funded by him. This conflict of interest is one that corporate media have largely tried to ignore, while the supposedly altruistic philanthropist Gates just keeps getting richer, laughing all the way to the bank.

  3. Belarus says around 7,000 migrants now in the country

Belarus on Thursday said that there were around 7,000 migrants in the ex-Soviet country, with around 2,000 of them camped on the border with EU member Poland.

[…]“The European Union is creating a humanitarian corridor for 2,000 refugees who are in the camp. We are taking on the responsibility of — as much as it is possible and if they wish — returning the 5,000 others to their homes,” Lukashenko’s spokeswoman Natalya Eismont said.

She said German Chancellor Angela Merkel will negotiate with the EU on creating the humanitarian corridor to Germany.

Poland Says ‘Humanitarian Corridor’ for Migrants May Backfire

Poland is against establishing a “humanitarian corridor” for the mostly Middle Eastern migrants stuck on the Belarus border because it could encourage more people to illegally enter the European Union, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.

Morawiecki said he told German Chancellor Angela Merkel — who has been active in trying to resolve the standoff on the EU’s eastern border — that Poland won’t allow other EU nations to decide on issues which regard its sovereignty.

Belarus: Hundreds of Iraqis board flight back home after failing to reach EU

Several hundred migrants who attempted to cross the Poland-Belarus border checked in for a flight back to Iraq, in Minsk on Thursday.

According to Majid al-Kilani, consul of the Embassy of Iraq in Russia, 431 people have voluntarily opted to fly back home.

“We issued certificates of return to those who lost their passports. The operation was perfectly executed. We didn’t encounter any problems. We hope that additional flights will be arranged for those who want to return home. This flight was voluntary for those who want to return to Iraq,” the consul noted.

The diplomat also hoped for further cooperation with Belarus authorities to transport migrants wishing to return home back to Iraq.

Thousands of migrants are still stranded on the Belarus-Poland border zone, hoping to cross the frontier into the EU.

The migrant crisis comes amid escalating tensions between the EU and Belarus. Brussels has accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of orchestrating the migrant flow as part of a ‘hybrid war’ designed to put pressure on the bloc over sanctions. Minsk has denied the allegations.

Last month Poland strengthened border patrols on the frontier with Belarus and put up a barbed-wire fence in place in an attempt to stem the flow.

    SOUNDBITE:

SOT, Majid al-Kilani, consul of the Embassy of Iraq in Russia (Arabic): “By decision of the Iraqi government, today we carried out a special flight to evacuate our compatriots from the Belarusian-European border. This operation was easy and successful. The airport management rendered us all kinds of assistance and support in this matter. We issued return certificates to those who lost their passports. The operation was perfectly executed. We did not encounter any problems. We hope that additional flights will be arranged for those who wish to return home. This flight was voluntary for those who want to return to Iraq. We didn’t force anyone to come home. Everyone came back of their own volition. There are a large number of people there now [at the border] who want to return. We hope to further cooperate with the authorities in Belarus to get them [refugees] to Minsk and then return to Iraq”.

  4. Protesters rally against restrictions as Europe fights fourth COVID wave

Protesters gathered in Prague and Bratislava to demonstrate against their respective governments’ COVID measures.

Hundreds of people gathered in Prague’s Old Town Square to rally against the lockdown policy imposed on unvaccinated people, banning them from using public spaces.

Hundreds of people rallied outside the Slovak Parliament building in Bratislava, on the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in former Czechoslovakia.

The demonstration concluded with a march against the COVID restrictions established by the government of actual Prime Minister Eduard Heger.

As the fourth wave is washing over Europe, hospitals are filling up fast.

The WHO has reported that Europe is currently the only region in the world where COVID deaths increased in the last week.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the situation ‘is dramatic’.

      • DEUTSCHE PRAVDA – COVID: Germany introduces new measures to curb the pandemic

Chancellor Angela Merkel and the 16 state premiers have decided on fresh restrictions. Earlier parliament saw a heated debate over how best to respond to the dramatic increase in COVID infections.

Acting Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country’s 16 state premiers reportedly agreed on several measures to curb the pandemic. The leaders stressed the necessity of vaccinations for all employees of hospitals and nursing homes.

They also agreed on the introduction of “2G” restrictions for the unvaccinated in those regions where a certain hospitalization rate is exceeded. “2G” refers to a system only allowing free movement for leisure activities for the geimpft oder genesen — “vaccinated or recovered.”

Merkel has long favored stricter measures to curb the pandemic. She again described the current situation as “dramatic.”

Germany’s vaccination quota stands at only around 68% and is even lower in the country’s eastern and southern regions, where infection and hospitalization rates have reached record highs.

        New benchmarks for restrictions

The so-called hospitalization incidence will be the new benchmark for introducing tougher regulations in Germany: If more than three per 100,000 inhabitants in a region are hospitalized with COVID, the 2G rule will apply for all public leisure events in a given state. A value of six per 100,000 will require people to show an additional negative COVID test (“2G+”). From a value of nine, further measures such as contact restrictions are to be implemented.

Currently, all German states except Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Saarland are above the value of three. Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are above the value nine.

In response to the soaring numbers, the states of Saxony and Bavaria already imposed 2G restrictions earlier this month.

On Thursday, more than 65,000 new infections were registered across the country in 24 hours. Health officials are warning that the number is likely to at least double.

        Remote work rules reinstated

Earlier on Thursday, the federal parliament voted on a set of measures proposed by the parties likely to make up the next federal government.

They voted not to extend the “epidemic situation of national concern” after it expires on November 25. This was introduced in March 2020 as the legal basis for Germany’s federal government to be able to take nationwide action, such as imposing travel restrictions. The parties set to form the next government have suggested a new set of regulations that still needs to be approved by the Bundesrat, the upper house of parliament.

The plans include mandatory daily testing for employees and visitors of care homes, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated or not.

They also include “3G” rules (“geimpft, genesen, oder getestet” — “vaccinated, recovered, or tested”) requiring people to show proof of full vaccination or recovery or a valid negative COVID test for workplaces and on public transport. Work from home rules would also be reinstated.

Free testing is back; nurses to get bonuses

Nurses, especially those working in intensive care facilities, will receive a bonus and rapid antigen tests will remain free of charge for everyone.

Germany’s 16 states will be also able to retain and introduce protective measures. This includes restricting or prohibiting recreational, cultural, and sporting events, banning entry to healthcare facilities and the sale and public consumption of alcohol, and closing universities.

Measures will not include school closures, blanket travel restrictions, or mandatory vaccination. New legislation includes the introduction of strict penalties of up to five years in prison for forgers of coronavirus documents and certificates. The forging of vaccine passports has become a large problem in Germany, according to police who say such fake documents can be sold for up to €400 ($452).

        First test of power

The vote is seen as a first major test for the coalition of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), Green Party, and the neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP), who are set to replace Angela Merkel’s “grand coalition” government of center-right Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) and SPD.

The passing of the legislation is complicated by the fact that coalition talks are ongoing and the old government technically remains in power in a caretaker capacity.

During the heated debate in the Bundestag, Germany’s federal parliament, the SPD’s Sabine Dittmar laid the blame for the current situation at the door of the outgoing CDU-led government, which she said had failed to curb infections by effectively promoting vaccination. “My urgent call is — vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate!” she said.

But the CDU has launched into opposition mode, demanding that the emergency provisions that have shaped so much of the pandemic response in Germany be extended.

Conservative MP Stephan Stracke accused the prospective new coalition government of making its “first mistake.”

“Case numbers are going up — and you are reducing restrictions. That is a mistake,” he said, addressing the prospective coalition parties. “All this means — you do not have a plan for the pandemic.”

FDP parliamentarian Marco Buschmann insisted that extending the special regulations beyond November 25 would only make sense if the government wanted to implement blanket business closures or lockdowns, including school closures. His party, Buschmann insisted, vehemently opposes such measures.

The situation is particularly difficult where vaccination rates are low and infection rates high, said Buschmann. That is “especially the case in Saxony and Bavaria.”

Tino Chrupalla, chairman of the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), expressed skepticism about how much vaccines have helped. His party is home to a substantial number of vaccine skeptics and coronavirus deniers. The AfD described many of Germany’s lockdown restrictions in its 2021 election manifesto as “disproportionate,” saying that many should be scrapped. It has also challenged several of them in court.

A number of the AfD members of parliament are currently unable to sit in the main plenary hall of the Bundestag, as they refuse to ascribe to 3G rules — they refuse to show documentation of vaccinations or recovery and will not allow themselves to be tested.

Prospective new coalition satisfied with decisions

“We are ending the current framework and implementing a new and legal framework to implement very effective measures,” Green Party MP Johannes Wagner told DW after the debate.

In elaborating on what this means for Germans, Wagner said, “children and people who are vaccinated can not again suffer under the high numbers of people who are not vaccinated. That’s why our legal framework provides very strict measures for people who are not vaccinated. They have to test to be able to work.”

Wagner added, “I am for a mandatory vaccination for certain groups, not for the whole population,” such as for “people who work in the hospitals.”

Karl Lauterbach, a physician and a parliamentarian for the SPD, accused Angela Merkel’s outgoing administration of failing to act quickly to prevent COVID-19 infection numbers from soaring.

“I think that the pandemic fourth wave was underestimated. Some scientists were not really giving an alert, others were. There was a lot of wishful thinking in our government,” he told DW after the session.

A professor in health economics and epidemiology, Lauterbach said complacency had led to the country battling record-breaking coronavirus cases.

He insisted that new rules proposed by the likely incoming SPD, Green and FDP government were enough to stop the spread of infection.

On whether the new measures can convince more people to be vaccinated: “I do think that at least part of these people can be convinced and will be convinced.”

        Questionable figures

Lothar Wieler, head of Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI), cast doubt on Thursday over the latest infection figures. He pointed to the well-known problem that real case numbers may be much higher due to a lag in reporting. The disease control agency chief called for quick and efficient action.

“The health system in some states can no longer cope with the situation,” he said. “And the projections are bleak, really bleak. There is an emergency in our country, and anyone who cannot see it is making a big mistake.”

More than 65,000 new infections were registered across the country in 24 hours. Health officials are warning that the number is likely to at least double.

      • Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting warns of tough COVID measures

BERLIN, Nov 18 (Reuters) – The population in Germany must prepare for tough measures in the coming months to tackle a fourth wave of coronavirus infections, Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday.

“To get through the winter, we will see drastic measures that have not been taken before,” the Social Democrat, who is negotiating a new government with the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats and expected to be the new chancellor, told journalists on Friday.

Germany needs 30 million additional COVID vaccinations by year-end, he said.

      • Germany: Parliament approves new Infection Protection Act

The German Parliament approved the new Infection Protection Act in Berlin on Thursday, paving the way for further restrictions for the unvaccinated on public transport and workplaces.

“With this bill, the states have more possibilities of acting efficiently than with the currently legal status,” argued Sabine Dittmar, an MP for the Social Democrats party.

“We abandon and secure that the health authorities can impose individual shut downs during specific outbreaks to contain the infection event,” Dittmar added, as the old bill was set to expire on November 25.

Out of 688 votes, 398 voted in favour of the Act, 254 voted against it and 36 did not vote.

The new regulations include working from home where possible, 3G rules applying to public transport, which is to be controlled with ‘random checks’ and visitors to care homes and old people’s homes are to be tested on the day.

The measures are still to be approved by the Bundesrat on Friday.

    • NOV 18 2021 WaPo – South Korea loosened covid rules after massive vaccine uptake.

Now cases and hospitalizations are surging.

SEOUL — Less than three weeks after South Korea relaxed pandemic restrictions under a new living-with-covid policy, the country is experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases.

On Wednesday, the country reported a record 522 coronavirus patients hospitalized with moderate to serious symptoms requiring intensive care, intubation or oxygen to help with breathing. It tallied 3,187 new infections the same day, the second-highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic.

South Korea’s government began relaxing pandemic restrictions on Nov. 1, deeming that a sufficient proportion of the population had been vaccinated. South Korea has fully immunized close to 80 percent of its 52 million people, despite a later start than many other wealthy countries. Fewer than 10 countries have higher vaccination rates, Washington Post figures show.

Last month, South Korea started vaccinating children ages 12 to 17 and providing booster shots for the elderly and people working at medical facilities. No vaccine has been approved for Korean children younger than 12.

In its first phase of loosened restrictions, South Korea is letting bars, restaurants and cafes stay open longer; previously, most had to close by 10 p.m. Private groups of up to 12 people can gather outside the Seoul metropolitan area (and 10 in the Seoul area), up from four. Professional sporting events can now allow fans into stadiums. (Game 3 of the Korean Series, the local equivalent of the World Series, is on Wednesday evening.)

The rising caseload has stirred concern among health officials. South Korea will stop relaxing measures further if coronavirus case numbers continue to go up, Jeong Eun-kyeong, the country’s top disease control official, said during a parliamentary hearing last week.

Korean officials have previously said that the country’s health-care system could manage 500 coronavirus patients with serious symptoms at any given time without experiencing major strains. Wednesday marked the first time that South Korea surpassed the 500-patient threshold.

Deaths have also been climbing. On Nov. 1, the seven-day average for daily coronavirus deaths was 12.3, according to Our World in Data. That figure has now risen to about 20.

Kim Woo-joo, an infectious-disease expert at Korea University, said the recent surges reflected waning immunity against the coronavirus among those who had been vaccinated several months ago. “This is why we need booster shots,” he said in a phone interview.

Health officials told reporters Wednesday that the spread of the delta variant has driven increases in breakthrough infections at nursing homes and long-term care facilities, where most of the residents are senior citizens who received their initial vaccination doses earlier in the year.

“We are seeing more serious cases and deaths among the elderly,” said Choi Eunhwa, head of a government panel that oversees vaccine policy.

An Israeli study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month showed that six months after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, people’s immune response to the coronavirus “substantially decreased,” especially among men, those age 65 or older and those with immunosuppressed conditions.

More than half of the vaccine doses administered in South Korea so far were of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, although the country has also given out doses of the Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines.

Though daily deaths are rising, South Korea’s covid fatality rate is low — and has fallen from 2.4 percent in May 2020 to less than 0.8 percent now, according to Our World in Data. This, experts say, is partly due to its high vaccination rate.

“This does show that vaccines work,” said Kim, the infectious-disease doctor. “But this isn’t a cause for celebration. The whole point of vaccines is preventing deaths. The number of deaths is rising.”

“If we want to live with covid like the common cold, the case fatality rate has to fall to less than 0.1 percent,” he said.

VOA – South Korea to Ramp Up Boosters After COVID Spike

[…]The Yonhap News Agency also reports the country is facing a shortage of hospital beds and health workers.

In an effort to address this latest surge, Dr. Choi Eun-hwa, head of the Korea Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, announced on Wednesday a plan to speed up the process of administering booster shots for people who were fully vaccinated more than six months ago.

She told reporters they will shorten the waiting period for boosters from six months to five for people over 50 and front-line workers such as police and firefighters, and to four months for people over 60 and those with underlying health conditions.

One-quarter of South Koreans Ready to Wear Masks Indefinitely

While the United States continues an ongoing culture war on the necessity and effectiveness of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, here in South Korea that debate is over. Or maybe more accurately, it never took place. Mask wearing has long been a normal part of life. But new numbers from Gallup Korea will appall American libertarians and the American right. A quarter of South Koreans—a plurality in the survey—prefer to continue masking indefinitely.

[…]Another suspect take includes South Koreans wearing masks because of their collectivist nature and a deeper care and understanding for their communities.

NOVEMBER 05 2021 – VOA – South Korea Showed How to Contain COVID, Now It Will Try to Live With It

[…]South Korea’s COVID-19 approach has unquestionably been a success so far. It is one of very few countries to avoid both mass lockdowns and mass deaths.

Now, after outperforming its global peers at nearly every stage of the pandemic, South Korea hopes it can demonstrate how to live with COVID-19.

[…]For starters, few in South Korea are declaring victory. That is in contrast to countries such as the United States and Britain, where leaders announced independence from the virus and quickly eased social distancing, only to see the delta variant sweep through their populations, killing tens of thousands more in each country.

[…]“We do, I think at this point, have a realization that the vaccines are doing what they’re supposed to do, which is preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death. But they don’t necessarily prevent infection,”

[…]Unlike many countries, South Korea has seen almost no domestic backlash to its pandemic approach.

Businesses largely complied with mandatory curfews. There has been no successful anti-vaccine movement. Virtually everyone wears masks, even when running alone outside on empty paths.

That public buy-in has been at the heart of South Korea’s COVID-19 success, according to public health experts.

[…]For instance, no vaccine mandates have been necessary; about 90% of adults have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

[…]Perhaps the most invasive tool is South Korea’s system of contact tracing.

Using cellphone, credit card, and other personal data, authorities can quickly determine where those infected with COVID-19 have gone and who they may have contacted.

[…]Temperature checks remain at the entrance of almost every business. Soon, electronic vaccine passes will be required to enter sporting events, concerts, and other large venues.

[…]During a previous round of social distancing, many South Korean newspapers mocked the strangely specific guidelines for Seoul fitness centers, which were prohibited from playing music with a tempo higher than 120 beats per minute. Joggers were also prevented from running faster than 6 kph on the treadmill.

NOV 09 2021 – DEUTSCHE PRAVDA – Is South Korea the role model in the fight against pandemics?

South Korea has gone its own way in the fight against the Coronavirus. Testing was core to its strategy at the start of the pandemic.

People used masks in private homes.

An app closely monitored the population, enabling authorities to track infection chains.
The vaccination campaign also quickly picked up speed.

Now over 40 million people in South Korea have received at least one jab.

That means over 80 percent of the population is fully or partially immunised among the highest vaccination rates in the world.

Is South Korea a role model for the world?

      What can other countries learn?

  5. FDA Wants Until 2076 To Fully Release Pfizer Vaccine Data: Lawsuit

The FDA has asked a federal judge to make the public wait until the year 2076 to disclose all of the data and information it relied upon to license Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. That is not a typo. It wants 55 years to produce this information to the public.

As explained in a prior article, the FDA repeatedly promised “full transparency” with regard to Covid-19 vaccines, including reaffirming “the FDA’s commitment to transparency” when licensing Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

With that promise in mind, in August and immediately following approval of the vaccine, more than 30 academics, professors, and scientists from this country’s most prestigious universities requested the data and information submitted to the FDA by Pfizer to license its COVID-19 vaccine.

The FDA’s response? It produced nothing. So, in September, my firm filed a lawsuit against the FDA on behalf of this group to demand this information. To date, almost three months after it licensed Pfizer’s vaccine, the FDA still has not released a single page. Not one.

Instead, two days ago, the FDA asked a federal judge to give it until 2076 to fully produce this information. The FDA asked the judge to let it produce the 329,000+ pages of documents Pfizer provided to the FDA to license its vaccine at the rate of 500 pages per month, which means its production would not be completed earlier than 2076. The FDA’s promise of transparency is, to put it mildly, a pile of illusions [ZH, we note that the FDA justifies this by claiming that the rate of 500 pages per month “is consistent with processing schedules entered by courts across the country in FOIA cases,” and blames the plaintiffs for “its own broad FOIA request”].

It took the FDA precisely 108 days from when Pfizer started producing the records for licensure (on May 7, 2021) to when the FDA licensed the Pfizer vaccine (on August 23, 2021). Taking the FDA at its word, it conducted an intense, robust, thorough, and complete review and analysis of those documents in order to assure that the Pfizer vaccine was safe and effective for licensure. While it can conduct that intense review of Pfizer’s documents in 108 days, it now asks for over 20,000 days to make these documents available to the public.

So, let’s get this straight. The federal government shields Pfizer from liability. Gives it billions of dollars. Makes Americans take its product. But won’t let you see the data supporting its product’s safety and efficacy. Who does the government work for?

The lesson yet again is that civil and individual rights should never be contingent upon a medical procedure. Everyone who wants to get vaccinated and boosted should be free to do so. But nobody should be coerced by the government to partake in any medical procedure. Certainly not one where the government wants to hide the full information relied upon for its licensure until the year 2076!

  7. Germany: Bundestag approves new legislation mandating updated COVID-19 restrictions

Germany’s parliament passed a draft law aimed at mandating fresh COVID-19 restrictions amid rising case numbers across the country, in a vote in Berlin on Thursday.

The bill would obligate employees to show proof of vaccination, a recent negative test, or recovery from COVID-19 when entering a workplace. The same requirement would be necessary to make use of public transportation.

The bill, proposed by the likely incoming government coalition, will now go to the upper house of the German parliament for approval.

    SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Aydan Ozoguz, German Parliament Vice-President (German): “The result of the draft law of the parliamentary group SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and FDP, a draft of a law to change the Infection Protection Act and other laws on the occasion of the repeal of the determination of the epidemic situation of national concern, printed materials 2015, 2078 and 2089. Submitted ballots 688. Yes votes 398; no votes 254; abstentions 36. The bill has been approved.”
