Reader’s Links for September 17, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Where The Hell Is All Our Healthcare Money Going?

This is the current percentage of Alberta’s population that is in the ICU with Covid:
    0.00004954545%

Provinces with populations in the millions being ‘crippled’ by a few hundred people in the ICU raises extremely disturbing questions.
Not long ago, Jason Kenney said vaccine passports were illegal:

Of course, we now know that Kenney has introduced a vaccine passport in Alberta.

He’s calling it the ‘restriction exemption program,’ as if that Orwellian phrase will somehow trick people into not seeing that it’s a vaccine passport.

How could it have been illegal before, but not illegal now?

    Did the laws change?

    Was new legislation passed?

    Of course not.

Turns out, politicians can make it up as they go along, with the ‘laws’ and our ‘rights’ being nothing but putty in their hands to be manipulated and contorted into whatever shape they desire.

    Why the reversal from Kenney?

Why such a humiliating and likely career-ending climb-down for him?

Well, the ostensible reason is ICU capacity in the province, the same reason that has been used to ‘justify’ these draconian restrictions all through the pandemic.

Yet, when you head on over to the Alberta Covid-19 website, and view their current ICU capacity, this is what you see:

    218 people.

In a province of nearly 4.4 million people, we are expected to believe that 218 people in the ICU is about to cripple and collapse the system?

Notably, that is how many people Alberta says are in ICU with Covid, while saying their total ICU capacity is 286. Which again begs the question, why is the ICU capacity so low?

Same in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and all over the country, we are told that a tiny percentage of the population being in the ICU was unsustainable.

Saskatchewan currently says there are ‘no ICU beds’ open in the entire province, they claim they are all filled up. And they are imposing mask mandates and gathering restrictions.

There are 79 ICU beds in the province.

A province of about 1.4 million people, has 79 ICU beds.

    Appalling.

Back to Alberta, that province is right at the top in healthcare spending per capita as Canadian provinces go.

Overall, healthcare spending in Canada is about 11.5% of our total GDP.

According to Stats Canada, healthcare spending represents 23.4% of government spending:

“Health care spending rose 2.9% to $186.5 billion, accounting for 23.4% of total government spending. This was equivalent to $4,910 per Canadian. The increase was largely attributable to higher spending on hospital services, which rose 3.5% to $123.4 billion.”

    That raises the following question:

Where the hell is all that money going?
How can a province spend billions on healthcare, make it the biggest proportion of all government spending, and then warn of ‘collapse’ when a few hundred people are in intensive care?

“Covid has exposed the woefully inadequate state of Canada’s healthcare system. Alberta, in particular, somehow only has <300 ICU beds with a pop. of 4.4m. They should have spent the last 16+ months adding more beds and healthcare workers, and we would have moved on by now.”

This isn’t getting the attention it deserves.

You see in sports when a team is ‘exposed,’ as in they are considered to be good but get absolutely demolished when they face any real competition.

Well, our healthcare system has been fully exposed as an absolute disaster and a failure.

There can be no illusions, none of the ‘feel good’ naive rhetoric Canadians love to employ whenever our healthcare system is questioned.

Simply put, we spend a gargantuan amount of money on a system that has proven to be unable to manage even a minor spike in ICU admissions.

Let me put it another way.

This is the current percentage of Alberta’s population that is in the ICU with Covid:

    0.00004954545%

Think about that for a moment.

The system is about to collapse because 0.00004954545 of the population is in the ICU?

For billions of dollars spent, that’s the best the province can do?

Further, if their total ICU capacity is 286, that equals ICU capacity for just 0.000065 of the population.

    Again, stunningly low.

    Canada needs more private healthcare
Let’s just be honest about this.

Nothing will change in this country in terms of our terrible healthcare system until we have more private healthcare.

And for those who think this means a fully US-style healthcare system, that is not the case.

In fact, many European countries manage to mix private healthcare delivery, with universal coverage, and that turns out to deliver better results.

For example, in countries with a more hybrid model of healthcare, the government still covers the cost of treatment, even as that treatment is delivered by a for-profit entity.

Countries with that model, with a similar GDP and standard of living to Canada, often spend less per capita, while getting better results.

As one example, Germany has far more ICU capacity than Canada, with a system that mixes public and private care with universal coverage.

We also need to look at the oft-demonized US system. While it has its flaws (we should never have Canadians going bankrupt for getting healthcare treatment), it has far outperformed our system in the past year and a half.

Texas has about four times the ICU capacity of all of Canada, despite having a lower population than Canada itself.

Funny how that never gets mentioned by those who foolishly hold up our healthcare system as ‘the best.’

Clearly, some private delivery combined with universal coverage is the way to go.

    Failing to learn lessons
Sadly, while Canadians should be learning how bad our healthcare system is, many have instead chosen the easier – but ultimately destructive – path of simply demonizing others.

Rather than admit they are failed leaders, rather than admit that our healthcare system is broken, and rather than admit that our naive opposition to private healthcare delivery has done significant damage, our politicians – and much of the public – have instead chosen to demonize unvaccinated Canadians, and impose draconian restrictions that only delay the end of the pandemic while making a mockery of our ‘rights and freedoms.’

If that attitude continues, then nothing will be learned, our system will remain broken, and the next time a crisis hits people will panic all over again and wonder why we spend so much to get so little.

  2. The PPC Surge Is Real & Could Change Canadian Politics In A Profound Way

For a long-time, the CPC has formulated strategy on the basis of right-leaning voters having no alternative. That may no longer be possible.
When it comes to People’s Party support in the polls, different surveys are all over the place.

Some have them as low as 4%.

Others have them up over 10%.

But even the lower end of the range would represent a huge increase for the party, considering they won 1.62% in 2019.

At even 4% or 5% of the vote, the PPC would almost certainly elect their leader Maxime Bernier to Parliament, which (as I’ve said before), would be a good thing for Canada since he represents the views of many Canadians who have been unfairly suppressed and ignored by the establishment.

It is conceivable that the PPC will outperform both the Greens and the Bloc in the popular vote.

This would be a stunning change for Canadian politics, and could have a profound impact on this country for a very long time.

First, let me address the issue of ‘vote-splitting.’

The better the PPC does in the polls, the more some CPC partisans claim “a vote for the PPC is a vote for Justin Trudeau,” and talk about vote-splitting.

Yet, as I noted in a recent article, in a democratic country no party is entitled to votes. Votes have to be earned:

“If a party loses votes to another party, then that’s because voters are freely choosing to place their votes elsewhere.

When the Liberals lose voters to the NDP, it’s usually because the Liberals are perceived as ‘not progressive enough,’ or too corrupt/dishonest.

When the Conservatives lose voters to the PPC (as polls show is increasingly taking place), it’s because the CPC isn’t considered conservative enough.

But even that narrative gets it wrong, since it implies that those voters originally ‘belonged’ to the Liberals or CPC.”

The feeling many Canadians have that both the Liberals and the CPC feel entitled to votes is a big part of why both Maxime Bernier and Jagmeet Singh may end up doing better in 2021 than they did in 2019.

CPC will be forced to listen to right-wing Canadians
But it’s not just the blowback against entitlement that is fueling the CPC.

It’s the perception that the CPC has moved much closer to the Liberals.

As just one example, Erin O’Toole went on a townhall with Rosemary Barton, with the inevitable result that CBC bias came to the fore:

“Throughout the 46-minute exchange, Barton repeatedly interjected with comments and questions echoing Trudeau’s campaign messaging, raising questions about the objectivity of the network.”

    This should be no surprise.

Barton and the CBC are still in litigation against the Conservative Party.

O’Toole says he will cut CBC funding (or at least said he would until shifting on that issue as well).

Why would the CPC expect good coverage from CBC after all evidence to the contrary?

It’s like Lucy and the football in Charlie Brown. The CPC constantly thinks “this time the establishment will give us a fair shake,” yet are tricked over and over again.

Meanwhile, O’Toole has passed up an opportunity to reach a massive audience consisting of many potential conservative supporters:

“Talked with Rex Murphy today about Justin Trudeau and the election that should have never been. Post tomorrow on my YouTube channel. Later this week: Maxime Bernier. I invited Erin O’Toole. He declined….”

If Erin O’Toole will speak with Rosemary Barton, but won’t speak with Dr. Jordan Peterson, why should the CPC be surprised when they lose voters to those who will reach out to such a large potential audience?

And this brings us to the real change that the PPC surge will bring to Canadian politics:

The CPC will be forced to either listen to right-wing voters, or pay an increasingly brutal electoral price.

On many issues, whether it be foreign aid, immigration levels, government spending, lockdowns, restrictions on freedom, etc…, Canada is divided.

However, because the CPC is constantly chasing ‘centrist’ votes, millions of right-wing Canadians are left without representation.

The CPC has done this because they don’t really fear losing votes to the right, and the risk/reward of moving from ‘True Blue’ to ‘moderate centrist’ seemed to favour that choice.

But with a surging PPC, and if the PPC does indeed gain a ton of votes on election day, the CPC will see that moving to the centre comes with serious consequences.

It’s as I’ve been warning for months:

The risk of O’Toole’s strategy is that you lose right-wing voters, but fail to gain voters in the centre, thus ending up worse off.

It remains to be seen if that will be the case, as the CPC is polling anywhere from 30% to 34% in most polls.

A finish around 30% would be worse than under Andrew Scheer, and even the current high end of polls for CPC support has them doing about as well as in 2019.

Thus, the CPC faces the future prospect of having to move to the right in order to try and gain votes, and that is due to rising PPC support.

The change that will bring to Canadian politics could be immense.

Not only will the CPC be forced to actually represent the views of right-wing Canadians, but if they fail to do so they will lose more and more support to the PPC.

This will also create a counterbalance to the seemingly endless left-wing drift of Canadian politics, a drift that has so far been accelerated by the CPC strategy of giving on on the carbon tax, seemingly giving in on guns, giving in on massive spending, giving in on political correctness, and adopting an extremely soft ‘don’t scare anyone’ approach that tacitly endorses the Liberal worldview.

In the future, the CPC may simply be unable to try such a strategy again, and that could drag the political spectrum more the right.

This has happened before, as many forget how the policies of the Chretien Liberals in terms of cutting spending and balancing the budget were often inspired (and originally proposed), by the Reform Party.

Canada became a fiscally conservative nation for quite some time, something that only changed dramatically under the Trudeau Liberals.

We could see something similar when it comes to government spending and individual rights and freedoms, with the persistent and principled advocacy of the PPC shifting the country more towards their position.

That’s why the PPC surge could change the country, and why this may be the last election in which the CPC is able to even try the ‘abandon the right’ tactic.

  3. Meanwhile, back on Mars, Merle and Argyle were back at it. It was Saturday night.

“So what do you think about this idea that the Delta variant is, in fact, vaxx reactions?” asked Merle. He pulled his eye away from the telescope’s lens. Argyle was struggling with his digits. The fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth on his left hand were hopelessly knotted. “What the f…?”.

“Cramps!” shouted Argyle in obvious discomfort. He shook his arm frantically trying to untangle his fingers. Finally his muscles relaxed and they released. “It’s a tough one. Slippery. On the one hand I do subscribe to that Earthling saying, ‘–scratch a lie catch a thief’, but this one is tricky. One time I was doing a job on Phobos. The guy I was working for asked me to seal a leaky vacuum chamber. He asked for it right at the start of the project. The request immediately raised a red flag for me. The task wasn’t in my scope or specifications. I became suspicious and watched for his next move–wondering if he was going to try to play me. Sure enough he did. We ended up in court and I won. My point is that you can see a con if you’re alert. If the adverse reactions to the vaxxes are, in fact, presented as the Delta variant, it is perfectly fitting for the cleverest of shysters to try to pull off. In this case it turns a potentially con-ending reality into a fantastic perpetuation of the con. All adverse reactions will be cloaked as mutant derivatives, which we know are inevitable for viruses, offering plausible deniability of vaxx adverse reactions. I’m only a layman, but it seems to me the rub is in the genome sequencing. This should be the way to know the nature of the relationship between the original virus and its variants, no? However as I understand it there has been some confusion in the sequencing of the original strain.”
    https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01731-3

“Right.” said Merle, putting his eye back to the telescope. “If Delta is a variant it would be supported by data. If it’s the vaxx it should be obvious.”

“But nothing is obvious now except paid-for media, bought politicians, silenced doctors questioning the new orthodoxy, suppressed adverse reaction stats, Agenda 30, and the clear attempt at mentacide on an epic scale. So my answer is: I don’t know. But if you asked me if I was an Earthling would my intuition lean to feelings that the authorities were not trustworthy, and that governments were showing clear signs that their actions were about control and not about health, I would answer a resounding affirmative. In this context all variants must become suspicious, in due diligence terms, until all other authoritarian measures are laid bare and justified.”

“Ahhhh!” Screamed Argyle again. “My other hand!”

“I’m not a racist, Argyle, but your type have way too many digits.”

  4. NETHERLANDS – A Chaotic Showdown With A Crossbow-Wielding Man Leaves 2 People Dead

A man fired a crossbow from a balcony into the street in the Netherlands Friday, in a dangerous and confusing event in which two people died and another victim was injured, police say. The suspect is now in custody; he was also injured.

Police were initially called to the apartment building in the city of Almelo for a reported stabbing incident Friday morning. The two people who died were found inside the building, local media outlet RTV Oost reports.

Police have released few details about what happened, saying their investigation is still ongoing. But it seems clear that the situation escalated very rapidly, as a call for a stabbing turned into a brief standoff with police involving a crossbow.

Video from the scene shows a shirtless man wielding a crossbow and seemingly firing at least one arrow from the balcony of the apartment building.

In the brief footage, at least one gunshot rings out — a shot that evidently came from police. Responding officers had to use their firearms, according to the East Netherlands Police Unit in Overijssel Province. Photos show that police tactical units were among those responding to the scene, and officers had pointed rifles with telescopic sights at the building.

Almelo Mayor Arjen Gerritsen said via Twitter that he is “shocked and upset” by the incident, which he said had a great impact on the neighborhood where it transpired. More information will be released when possible, he added.

It’s not clear what relationship the crossbow-wielding man might have had with the two people who died. Local media report that the Dutch national police are investigating the incident.

  5. Uzbek scientists say they are developing ‘edible’ tomato vaccine against COVID-19

Uzbekistan’s Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics has been working on creating what they call an ‘edible’ tomato vaccine against COVID-19.

This is said to be achieved by introducing the cloned S-protein of COVID-19 in the vegetable, according to its director Zabardast Buriev.

“We chose the tomato because it is edible. It can be eaten without heat treatment, as protein gets lost during heat treatment,” explained Buriev.

Preclinical trials are now underway on mice, which will be followed by human clinical trials.

Though the scientists claim preliminary success, no international health organisation yet recognises their attempt.

Health Canada took to Twitter on Thursday to announce new names for its approved COVID-19 brands: Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine will now be known as “Comirnaty,” Moderna’s has been dubbed “Spikevax” and AstraZeneca’s will be called “Vaxzevria.” But why and what do they mean?

The changes in-name-only come as both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have been given the full rubber stamp, receiving full Health Canada approval for anyone aged 12 and older on Thursday.

As experts note, the act of naming drugs and vaccines is a standardized process and can take a lot of time, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it can take several months to occur.

    • zero hedge – NYC’s Demand That Diplomats Follow Vaccine Mandate Creates Uproar At UN

New York City’s (legally questionable) demand that all representatives and diplomats who attend next week’s UN General Assembly meeting show proof of vaccination is threatening to derail the annual summit of world leaders as Russia and China protest the fact that their locally developed vaccines won’t be accepted.

NYC’s request that diplomats and their entourage show proof of vaccination before being admitted somehow received the backing of General Assembly President Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid. In a statement released on Wednesday, NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio and International Affairs Commissioner Penny Abeywardena thanked UN diplomats ahead of time for “working with us”, calling them “true New Yorkers”.

Unfortunately, not all diplomats are equally enthusiastic. In a letter to colleagues released on Wednesday, Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya denounced these new requirements as “clearly discriminatory” and accused NYC and Shahid of violating the UN charter, which states that the UN is international territory.

In the face of Russia’s complaints, Mayor de Blasio doubled down: “If the Russian ambassador is against it, I’m for it.” So much for the spirit of international diplomacy.

Keep in mind, the biggest issue here isn’t that diplomats aren’t vaccinated. It’s that they’re vaccinated with jabs that haven’t been approved in the US.

Sputnik V, a vaccine backed by Moscow and widely administered in Russia, does not have approval in the United States and is not on the World Health Organization’s emergency use listing either.

To try and make everybody happy, NY officials have promised to dole out free doses of the single-dose J&J jab by the UN Headquarters in Midtown. But it’s not approved in all member states, either (though it has been approved by the WHO, even as questions about dangerous side effects linger).

To Mayor de Blasio, this amounts to a sufficient olive branch. “If their vaccine isn’t good enough, then they should go and use one of the other vaccines.”

With so many parties bristling at NYC’s attempt to exert sovereignty over a piece of supranational territory, it looks like NYC’s demands likely won’t be met. A statement from a UN spokesman said the UN has traditionally relied on an “honor system” and that they were working with “the sitting President of the A” to continue the honor system. Another spokesman said the letter from NYC authorities doesn’t specify any single vaccine for use, despite de Blasio’s comments about offering the JNJ jab.

There’s also the question of discrimination: only 2% of the nearly 6 billion jabs produced have reached Africa.

With hundreds of world leaders preparing to fly into New York City next week, there’s a chance for ructions that could disrupt, or maybe even delay, the start of the assembly.

  6. Internal Dissent at FDA Over COVID Vaccine Boosters
    By Eric Lendrum
    September 16, 2021

Just days before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is set to come to a decision on whether to approve booster shots for the coronavirus vaccine, dissent both within the agency and the scientific community is threatening to upend these efforts, according to the New York Times.

The FDA’s Peter Marks, who is in charge of all agency policies concerning the vaccine, pointed to an article recently published by the medical journal Lancet, which saw a group of international scientists argue against implementing booster shots for the general public. Two of the scientists who argued against boosters are top FDA officials working under Marks: Marion Gruber, director of the Office of Vaccines Research and Review, and Philip Krause, Gruber’s deputy.

Marks said he was informed of the article by a friend who simply texted him “Oh my God, it never stops.” Marks himself largely rejected the findings of the Lancet article, claiming that the article did not cite enough evidence from Israel, which has the highest rate of vaccinations per capita in the world, primarily with the Pfizer vaccine.

  7. The F-Word Biden’s Play for the Courts
Biden’s fascist COVID order is not a serious effort to stem the tide of the pandemic.
    By Ken Masugi
    September 16, 2021

In his remarks justifying his vaccine mandate, Joe Biden gave the most fascistic speech ever delivered by a president of the United States. It demanded unconstitutional and illegal powers and replaced the rule of law with partisanship, timed solely to distract attention from his Afghanistan fiasco.

In overthrowing the notion of law as the embodiment of objective reason, he has made a mockery of the American concept of the rule of law. He has replaced the constitution and law with the willfulness of a king, and a raging one at that. In that regard, I wish his critics would cease calling him a dotard, as that completely distorts the seriousness of the moment. I do not make this charge of fascism lightly, but since no one else deigns to do it, here it is.

Before going into detail, let me compare Biden’s remarks with a worthy competitor for most fascist speech: Franklin Roosevelt’s first inaugural (March 4, 1933). In it he compared the powers he needed to deal with the crisis of the Depression with those of a general in time of war. By Roosevelt’s reckoning, the American people are his privates to order about. (Recall these were the times during which we saw the rise of tyrants in Europe and Asia.) FDR compared himself with God’s anointed and Jesus Christ (having driven “the money-changers . . . from their high seats in the temple of our civilization”).

  8. President Joe Biden’s decision to cut deliveries of monoclonal antibodies to southeastern states, in what critics have called a politically-motivated effort to punish Republican states, could end up sentencing black people to death from coronavirus.

There is no shortage of Regeneron, and the federal government controls the distribution of the drug completely.

The decision came after the administration said that it would not cut supply to those states, and after Biden himself announced last week that “we will increase the average pace of shipment across the country of free monoclonal antibody treatments by another 50 percent.”

  9. One Simple Change to Begin Reversing the Left’s Takeover
Turn the wheel in the other direction and the vicious cycle will become a virtuous one.
    By Adam Mill
    September 16, 2021

Take heart. The resurgence of a freedom-based conservatism has already begun. On the other side of the pandemic tyranny, the debacle in Afghanistan, and the catastrophic reckoning with inflation, Americans will be ready to be rid of the screechy pseudo-intellectuals who ruin everything. When that day comes, it’s critical we take steps to eliminate the Left’s toxic syndicate that indoctrinated so many Americans. It’s not enough to beat them back. We must look to the source of this poison that almost overtook our country.

But how? It’s simple: End 100 percent federal student loan guarantees.

Rather, they said, Nagarwala was part of a secret network of physicians in a tight-knit Indian community who were cutting 7-year-old girls across the country for years as part of a religious obligation and cultural tradition that had mothers and daughters traveling all over for the procedure.

In a courtroom hearing Thursday, the government disclosed for the first time publicly that female physicians in California and Illinois also were performing FGM procedures on minor girls who belonged to their small Indian Muslim sect, known as the Dawoodi Bohras. They also alleged that Nagarwala – the lead defendant in Detroit’s historic FGM case – traveled to the Washington D.C. area to perform FGM on as many as five minor girls there.

  12. After Hectoring Newsmax Reporter for Asking ‘Inaccurate’ Question
    By Debra Heine
    September 16, 2021

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Thursday denied that that the Biden Regime was punishing red states by slashing their supplies of Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody treatments, haughtily telling Newsmax reporter Emerald Robinson that the claim was “inaccurate.” However, in her answer, the press secretary made a few inaccurate assertions herself.

Two months ago, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was castigated by Democrats for promoting the monoclonal antibodies to treat patients with COVID-19. Initially, they argued that the treatments didn’t work. Eventually, they admitted that the therapy did work, but was “not the path out of the pandemic.”

Now, even the governor’s biggest detractors have had to admit that the treatments have been highly successful at fighting the virus.

Many of us are sick of the tyrant in the White House, but how many would have the courage to give up a prestigious career and comfortable retirement because of it?

Lt. Col. Paul Douglas Hague did just that, proving once again that those who serve in the military are the bravest among us.

He resigned from the Army — forfeiting his pension by cutting short a 19-year career — in protest of the Pentagon’s sweeping vaccine mandate and the “Marxist takeover” of the military.

  15. The Chinese regime is warning of “counterstrikes” against Canada if a Conservative government is elected next week.

Chinese politburo mouthpiece Global Times published an article last week sharing threats from officials at China’s state-run China Foreign Affairs University.

“(If) the Canadian government puts those hawkish words into action, it will invite counterstrikes from China, and Ottawa is the one to suffer,” the report said of the Conservative party’s tough line on China.

Last month, China’s ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, took aim at the Conservatives’ tough-on-China platform in a Hill Times interview.

“Some people put their personal political interests above the interests of the Canadian people as a whole and hype issues related to China,” Cong said of O’Toole.

  17. Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul is joining California Democrat Sen. Alex Padilla to introduce legislation that would put “documented DREAMers” on a path to permanent residency.

The bipartisan bill would allow more than 200,000 people who came to the U.S. as children and graduated from American universities to apply for a green card.

“We cannot turn our backs on the ‘Documented Dreamers’ who have spent most of their lives in this country, contributing to their communities and our economy but face continued uncertainty and risk deportation once they turn 21,” Padilla, who chairs the Judiciary Committee’s immigration panel, said in a statement.

“In particular, the legislation would help young adults, largely Indian citizens, who turned 21 while their parents were stuck waiting in lengthy green card backlogs caused by strict per-country visa caps the U.S. imposes,” Roll Call reported.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An influential federal advisory panel overwhelmingly rejected a plan Friday to offer Pfizer booster shots against COVID-19 to most Americans, dealing a heavy blow to the Biden administration’s effort to shore up people’s protection amid the highly contagious delta variant.

The surprising vote by the committee of outside experts assembled by the Food and Drug Administration was 16-2, with members expressing frustration that Pfizer had provided little data on the safety of extra doses. Many also raised doubts about the value of mass boosters, rather than ones targeted to specific groups.

In an extraordinary move, both FDA leaders and the panel indicated they were likely to take a second vote Friday afternoon on recommending the booster shots for older Americans and other high-risk groups.

That would help salvage part of the White House’s campaign but would still be a huge step back from the sweeping plan proposed by administration a month ago to offer booster shots of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to nearly all Americans eight months after they get their second dose.

During several hours of vigorous debate Friday, members of the panel questioned the value of offering boosters to nearly everyone.

“I don’t think a booster dose is going to significantly contribute to controlling the pandemic,” said Dr. Cody Meissner of Tufts University. “And I think it’s important that the main message we transmit is that we’ve got to get everyone two doses.”

  19. Virginia high school teacher says making kids behave in class is ‘white supremacy’

Virginia high school teacher is under fire for calling efforts to make kids behave in class “the definition of white supremacy.”

Josh Thompson, an English teacher at Blacksburg High School, posted a since-deleted TikTok video attacking the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program used in Montgomery County schools, Fox News said.

The teacher called the techniques that help reduce disruptive student behavior “white supremacy with a hug.”

“It’s things like making sure that you’re following directions, and making sure that you’re sitting quietly, and you are in your seat — and all these things that come from white culture,” he said in the video, which is being widely shared online after being saved before he deleted it.

  20. MADISON, Wis. (AP/CBS 58) — A judge says prosecutors can’t argue a man who shot three people, killing two, during a protest against police brutality in Wisconsin is linked to the Proud Boys white nationalist group.

Kyle Rittenhouse, of Antioch, Illinois, faces multiple charges in the August 2020 shootings in Kenosha.

Prosecutors asked Judge Bruce Schroeder if they can argue at trial in November that Rittenhouse’s beliefs align with the Proud Boys and he traveled to the protests because the group advocates violence against Black Lives Matter supporters.

Schroeder ruled Friday that there’s no evidence Rittenhouse was affiliated with the group on the night of the shootings.

A panel of North Carolina judges in a split decision blocked the state’s voter ID law, saying it discriminates against Black people.
The majority of the three-judge panel said in its opinion that evidence shows the 2018 law “was enacted in part for a discriminatory purpose, and would not have been enacted in its current form but for its tendency to discriminate against African American voters.”
North Carolina’s voter identification law was enacted in late 2018 when the state legislature overrode a veto by Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat.
