Reader’s links for August 31, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. I’ll have to stop by the BC Richmond t&t soon and see if the still have this poster about their employee vax rate :/

    Meanwhile London drugs

    https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/london-drugs-employees-vaccinated-covid-19
Employees will be required to disclose their COVID-19 vaccination status and booster vaccination status, and show government documentation to their manager so that it can be tracked.

Those who cannot be vaccinated for medically approved reasons or other protected legal grounds will be accommodated; however, they will be required to be tested with an approved COVID-19 test based on their hours of work and exposure. Similarly, employees who choose not to get vaccinated, share documentation, or receive booster doses will need to “submit to ongoing testing to be eligible for work hours.

    ……

London Drugs stresses that it will not be introducing proof of vaccination for customers at this time.

Canadian feed stores are receiving a deluge of calls from people asking to buy IVERMECTIN because of misinformation that suggests the drug, usually used to deworm horses and other livestock, can be used to treat COVID-19 in humans.

    • sky news UK – COVID-19 booster vaccines: What you need to know

People in the UK could be offered a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine from September.

And they’re not alone, the US plans to follow suit and Israel’s booster rollout is well underway.

Here is everything you need to know about a possible third jab.

    • Deutsche Pravda – Fact check: Do COVID-19 vaccines protect against the delta variant?

Worldwide, some people died of the delta variant despite being fully vaccinated.

Is the COVID-19 vaccination no longer sufficient?

A look at the facts shows: Yes, complete vaccinations are still the best protection you can get against delta.

    • Deutsche Pravda – Where did the coronavirus come from?

Where did the virus behind COVID-19 come from? It’s a question that’s dogged researchers since the early days of the pandemic.

Most maintain it jumped from bats to humans in a Chinese market.

Some claim it could have other origins – in particular, a breakout from a lab working with viruses.

Getting answers hasn’t been easy. China has been guarded.

And scientists warn that the window to finding COVID’s true origin is closing fast.

The debate that has turned highly-political, at times threatening to overshadow management of the pandemic itself.

Solving the puzzle is still critical.

Determining the origin of Sars-Cov-2 could help outbreaks of new diseases, and stop future pandemics before they start.

A new US-intelligence report also fails to settle on an origin theory.

But it does give a small peek into the ongoing debate.

An unclassified summary of that report says outright that it’s unlikely the virus was developed as a biological weapon, or that Chinese officials even knew about the virus.
Most intelligence agencies in the US still think it was a transmission that occurred outside of the lab.

But the report doesn’t dismiss the lab-accident theory, saying one agency concluded that account was more probable, while two other agencies said they couldn’t reject the idea.

The report said more evidence is needed, in particular early clinical samples of the virus.
That appears unlikely to happen, and it means the debate over origin will continue.

  4. This Was No Accident – Biden Turned the Taliban Into One of the World’s Biggest Arms Dealers

    • reuters – Canada to resettle 5,000 Afghan refugees evacuated by the U.S.

OTTAWA, Aug 31 (Reuters) – Canada said on Tuesday it would resettle some 5,000 Afghan refugees evacuated by the United States as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government addresses an issue critics say has been neglected during his campaign for re-election.

“We know there is more to do with allied evacuation operations ending,” Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino told a briefing. “We’re pulling out all the stops to help as many Afghans as possible who want to make their home in Canada.”

Canada evacuated 3,700 people from Kabul in recent weeks, of which some 2,000 were Afghans – and their families – who had helped Canadian soldiers and diplomats in the past. Canada ended its mission to Afghanistan in 2011 but military trainers stayed on until 2014.

Trudeau, 49, called a snap Sept. 20 election on the day Kabul fell, and critics said his government’s evacuation efforts were slow and fell short of what other countries were doing.

Some 54% of Canadians think Ottawa should have acted more quickly to help Afghans, according to a Postmedia/Leger Marketing poll published last week.

The 5,000 refugees evacuated by the United States will be resettled as part of a previously announced Canadian plan to accept more than 20,000 vulnerable Afghans who had already left the country – including women leaders, human rights workers and reporters.

“We want to welcome Afghan families who have helped Canadians, who have who fought for justice, who fought for rights for the LGBT community, for women, for journalists,” Trudeau told an Ottawa campaign event on Tuesday.

Canada said it hoped to continue to help Afghans who want to resettle as long as the Taliban allow them to leave. Some 1,250 Canadian nationals, permanent residents and family members are stranded in Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Marc Garneau said.

“Afghans with travel documents to other countries must be allowed to move safely and freely out of the country without interference,” Garneau told the briefing. “Canada and its allies are firm on this point, and we are united.”

Celebratory gunfire resounded across Kabul on Tuesday as the Taliban took control of the airport following the withdrawal of the last U.S. troops, marking the end of a 20-year war that left the Islamist group stronger than it was in 2001.

    • Deutsche Pravda – Nations have vastly different approaches towards relations with the Taliban

After more than two decades, US troops have completed their final withdrawal from Afghanistan, bringing the war to an end.

      So, what now?

The Taliban are left with the job of governing the country, and the international community must decide how to deal with Afghanistan’s new rulers.

And here’s where the way forward isn’t quite clear.

But take a look at what some world powers have been saying.

At a press conference on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said – “The Taliban seeks international legitimacy and support. Our position is any legitimacy and support will have to be earned.”

“What should have happened upon learning of the Commander in Chief’s (President Biden’s) plan to quickly withdraw our forces and close the important power projection base Bagram, without adequate plans and forces in place to conduct the entire operation in an orderly fashion?” they wrote. “As principal military advisors to the CINC/President, the SECDEF and CJCS should have recommended against this dangerous withdrawal in the strongest possible terms.”

  7. Lawmakers Write To Pelosi Calling For Biden Removal After Americans Abandoned: ‘Begin Impeachment Proceedings Immediately’
    Ryan Saavedra
    4-5 minutes

A group of lawmakers wrote a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday evening calling on her to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against Democrat President Joe Biden after hundreds of American citizens were abandoned in Afghanistan following Biden’s disastrous pullout from the country.

“The American people must have full confidence in their Commander in Chief’s judgement and ability to protect our country and respond decisively to national security threats,” Reps. Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Pete Sessions (R-TX), and Yvette Herrell (R-NM) wrote to Pelosi.

“We have no confidence in President Joseph R. Biden’s ability to carry out his duties as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces,” they wrote. “His unilateral, reckless decision to retreat from Afghanistan was done against the advice of military and national security experts and it has now put thousands of American military personnel, citizens, and Afghan allies in grave peril. Tragically, at least 12 service members have lost their lives in the deadliest attack on U.S. forces in the last decade. President Biden refuses to take responsibility for his actions and continues to mishandle the deteriorating situation at every step. In addition, he has deliberately misled the American people in response to questions posed by the media. Free nations around the world look to the United States for leadership, and President Biden has proven definitively, and repeatedly, since this crisis began that he is not capable of effectively executing his duties as our Commander-in-Chief and leader of the free world.”

  9. DeSantis Warns Biden: Deport Or Send ‘Unvetted’ Illegals To Democrat-Run States, Not Florida
    Amanda Prestigiacomo
    4-5 minutes

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) fired off a letter Thursday, excoriating the Biden administration over their “reckless immigration policies” and demanded the “immediate” end of “unvetted” illegal immigrants being funneled into his state.

If Biden won’t deport the illegals, DeSantis suggested the administration direct them to a different state that supports the “flouting of our immigration laws” — not Florida.

“While Floridians are working to ensure that criminal aliens are not released back into our communities, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appears to be hard at work resettling ever-larger numbers of illegal aliens who have no lawful status under federal immigration law from the southwest border to Florida,” the governor wrote in the five-page letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “I ask that DHS immediately cease any further resettlement of illegal aliens in Florida and that the aliens instead be removed from the United States or resettled in states that support the administration’s continued flouting of our immigration laws.”

“Floridians welcome responsible immigration that serves the interests of Florida and the American people, but we cannot abide the lawlessness that your department is aiding and abetting on the southwest border,” DeSantis said.

The retired United States Army Green Beret who ran a daring rescue mission that likely saved the lives of at least 500 people who would have been trapped in Kabul by the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal told Fox & Friends on Monday that there are Americans and Afghan allies trapped behind enemy lines — including children — and that at least one group were turned by Taliban fighters who then fired at them.

Retired Green Beret commander Scott Mann, who led the “Task Force Pineapple” mission, disputed the Biden administration’s claims that all Americans who want to get out of Afghanistan are able to leave.

“The Pineapple volunteers – these are all special ops volunteers and civilian supporters. We’re doing this remote. We’re doing this from the US, but we’re building on our relationship and trust that we’ve had with our Afghan partners for 20 years. So we’ve got the ground truth on the outside of the gate,” Mann told the network.

  12. Biden’s gambling on another death tax to fund his budget goals | TheHill

    5-6 minutes

Our nation’s job creators have endured an economic calamity unlike anything we have ever seen in modern times — the crushing blow of COVID. In response, President Joe Biden promised to “Build Back Better” America’s economic growth and prosperity opportunities. But his proposed American Families Plan threatens the very foundations of those opportunities — a foundation long supported by small businesses across America.

Republican and Democratic presidents before Biden offered plans to sustain America’s greatness; however, these goals often become lost in the bureaucracy of Washington’s partisan fights. The real tension is about who sacrifices and pays for the cost of prosperity.

Under Biden’s plan, more small business owners will be required to make that sacrifice than you may think. In particular, the president would eliminate the step-up in basis from the transfer of appreciated property — effectively imposing a second “death tax” and increased bureaucracy on families, small businesses and farms.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby refused to answer a question Monday inquiring why American officials did not take action to protect American forces at the Kabul airport last week if they knew an ISIS-K attack was imminent.
    What is the background?

Politico reported Monday that top U.S. commanders knew approximately when and where the ISIS-K attack would occur.

In fact, about an hour and a half before the attack, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reportedly held a meeting and told top Pentagon officials to prepare for a forthcoming “mass casualty event.” Politico based its report on classified notes obtained from that meeting.

  14. Deutsche Pravda Documentary – Orbán, the EU and the rule of law

    ( 42 min 26 )

In the EU, a battle over power and money is raging.

Since the summer of 2020, a majority of EU states have been pushing to attach conditions to the allocation of EU funds, so that only those countries that adhere to democratic practices receive funds.

The rule-of-law mechanism allows for EU financial support only if there is democratic fair play by member states.

    So far so good.

But Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is aggressively challenging that.

In “Hello, Dictator,” Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn calls Hungary a “shackled democracy.”

Indeed, in one fell swoop, Orbán was able to plunge the EU into crisis – a crisis that was eventually mediated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Was that a case of appeasing an autocrat?

The Canadian pastor who is facing a four-year jail sentence for holding church services in Calgary, Alberta, is sending a warning to Americans. This pastor, originally from Poland, saw tyranny growing up in his communist native land. He is now saying that this tyranny has spread to Western countries.

Pastor Artur Pawlowski recently spoke to the press in Portland, Oregon. He had just experienced an attack on a prayer rally he was holding there. The event was organized with local American church leaders, but black-clad members of Antifa disrupted it with tear gas. They destroyed sound equipment and assaulted some of the worshippers as they yelled that God had abandoned them.

Pawlowski, himself, was maced in the face. He claimed that Portland police simply watched the incident from their cars.

If Chinese scientists succeed in designing pathogens targeting only foreigners, the next microbe, virus, or germ from China could end non-Chinese societies. This will be Communist China’s civilization-killer. The next pandemic, therefore, could be the one that leaves China as the world’s only viable society. The world, therefore, needs something far more important than justice or compensation. It needs deterrence. On August 27, the Biden administration released an unclassified summary of the intelligence community’s report on the origins of COVID-19. The IC, America’s 18 intelligence agencies, could reach only a few definitive conclusions. The agencies said they needed more information, but the world now knows enough to begin imposing severe costs on China.

America and other nations must impose those costs to prevent China’s Communist Party from releasing a civilization-killing disease. Yes, the People’s Liberation Army is now developing pathogens to destroy non-Chinese societies.

  18. The Economist Excises Religion from Extremism…And Whitewashes Hamas’ Gaza Tyranny

An August 28 article by The Economist describes how the “ripple effects” of the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan will be a boon to Islamic fundamentalists and terrorists much further afield.

The piece describes how jihadist groups will be emboldened by the Sunni militants’ return to power in Kabul; this, as United States-led forces withdraw after intervening in 2001 to oust the Taliban, which harbored the Al Qaeda leaders that coordinated the 9/11 attacks.

The article argues the US’ drawdown, described as a “humiliation,” will send a clear message that “wretched rulers” can be toppled.

What is most striking, however, is that in a feature focused on the global threat of jihadism, the word “Islam” is not mentioned once….

    [A]ccording to The Economist:
Most jihadist groups are motivated primarily by local grievances: a predatory government, an ethnic or sectarian divide, infidel intruders. Yet they also tap into a global narrative. On their phones they see daily evidence that the oppression they face at home is part of a wider pattern of persecution of Muslims, from the gulag of Xinjiang to the hellscape of Gaza.

Some of those who cheered and excused the US withdrawal from eastern Syria (which was never completed) and were silent with the chaos that unfolded in Oct 2019; have been against the US leaving Afghanistan. They don’t see that the two policies are related?

Don’t they realize that in both instances it’s not just about US withdrawal or who the US partners are but also US influence and the way that US adversaries whether Iran, China, Russia,Turkey, or even US Janus-faced friends like Qatar, move in as the US moves out?

One problem in US policy is that some foreign policies become domestic policies. In the end the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the attempt to leave Syria were motivated by similar instincts and both were done badly. One policy was temporarily reversed.

I assume that the overall affect will be more pressure for the US to leave Iraq and Syria now. And the usual suspects of Russia, Iran, Turkey with China and others in the wings, will be there to try to leverage means to get US out. It’s slow like a steam roller but it’s moving

But abroad there was avid interest among those we call allies and their would-be predators.

A couple days later I was hearing about a quiet visit to Washington by certain Israelis. Quick roundtrip, no details.

Suddenly PT reversed his decision, at least in part: We’re staying, we’re staying to keep the oil. We can’t let ISIS or Assad take the oil.
