Reader’s Links for August 25, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. “Let’s watch,” said little Bobby.
“OK,” his father said, “but just for a minute. We have to get back home.”

The audience had gathered around the busking magician. It was a beautiful August evening, not too hot. The magician pulled a rabbit out of his hat. “Ooo,” gasped the crowd. They clapped. Then the magician quickly did an impressive card trick that seemed impossible. People threw coins into the performer’s hat to show appreciation. He then approached little Bobby, reached out towards his head, and pulled a quarter from behind Bobby’s ear. The audience applauded once again.
“The quarter came out of his sleeve!” Bobby shouted. “I saw it! That’s not magic.”

What a cute little boy, the others thought as they continued to rain cash into the magician’s hat. Walking away Bobby thought more about it. If the magician could pull money out of thin air then he didn’t need to do tricks to get other people’s money. It didn’t make sense.

    • End of times talk has been around for a while. Take it with a grain of salt. It is the truth that is always coming, no more and no less.

      • The end of time people are grasping at straws, they want to be saved rather then have to think and fight for themselves. I’ve been hearing that its the end times since my early memories in the 1950s, they are usually accompanied by the people who say that while it isn’t he end times we are going have a catastrophic decivilization that will push us back to the stone age. I don’t see this happening either, civilization has fallen but our tech base has grown more sophisticated.

In many was the Ancient Greek idea that governments run in cycles, Democracy to Dictatorships to Monarchies to Democracies is proving to be correct. The US Constitution was set up to break this cycle and we are now struggling to see if we can old on to our Republic are remain a free nation.

        • I agree Richard. However the fact that a significant demographic thinks this way is inadvertently helpful to the fight against collectivism.

    • Bobby then thought about free mRNA vaccines.

      – How did these materialize and not any others?

      – And if people needed vaccines, why didn’t they pay for them themselves?

      – How had they created the indolent culture of ‘free stuff’ in The West?

The sales-pitch is: death to self and others, the prevention of access to overwhelmed hospitals, cancelled surgeries and treaments, not getting beaten up by police, saving the economy, and getting back to normal. Who wouldn’t buy a vaccine for each of these? Make America Great Again.

So the Taliban is telling the US to get out of Afghanistan by Tuesday but to forget all about the Afghans who helped them because they are going to keep them there and then build a 50-foot pyramid out of their severed heads? And exactly how will we even know either way if everybody’s out of Afghanistan and the media there is completely controlled by the Taliban. There will be nothing but rumors and the odd person sneaking out of the country in the dark.

Uh… Isn’t that a declaration of war? Shouldn’t that elicit a deadly response from the American President? Won’t America’s enemies see that as a sign that the damn cat has been successfully belled and they can do whatever we want now?

If Biden fails to respond the Chinese are likely going to be in Taiwan within the year and the genocide in South Africa will probably start up about the same time. Then the terrorist attacks out of the new Terrorist Mecca will begin as they get their Kabul head offices built – maybe a huge bomb at the Super Bowl or at Times Square on New Year’s Eve. The world’s policeman has gone brain dead and now there is no policeman. Open season…!

Joe Biden is as corrupt as he is incompetent and I have no doubt that he is being extorted by the Chinese and that he needs to be removed from office before he totally ruins the country…

  4. the guardian -Fresh hope for ex-marine’s efforts to rescue 200 cats and dogs from Kabul

UK defence secretary says Paul Farthing, his team and animals can leave on chartered plane

A former Royal Marine who has been campaigning to have dozens of people and hundreds of animals at his sanctuary evacuated from Afghanistan has been offered a glimmer of hope after the defence secretary said UK officials would help.

Paul Farthing, known as Pen, had already been given authorisation to get his people out but continued working with supporters to secure safe passage for 140 dogs and 60 cats they were caring for at the Nowzad shelter he founded in Kabul after serving with the British army in Afghanistan.

“Now that Pen Farthing’s staff have been cleared to come forward under [leave outside the rules], I have authorised MoD to facilitate their processing alongside all other eligible personnel at (Kabul airport). At that stage, if he arrives with his animals we will seek a slot for his plane,” Ben Wallace tweeted in the early hours of Wednesday.

“If he does not have his animals with him, he and his staff can board an RAF flight. I have been consistent all along, ensuring those most at risk are processed first and that the limiting factor has been flow through to airside not airplane capacity.”

Two days earlier, a jubilant Farthing had announced the UK government had granted visas for all his staff and their dependants – totalling 68 people. But the evacuation of the shelter’s animals – a plan he named Operation Ark – remained a sticking point.

Wallace had insisted the animals would have to wait behind since the UK would prioritise the evacuation of people onboard RAF flights out of Kabul.

Nowzad supporters on Tuesday announced a privately chartered Airbus A330 – funded by donations – was on standby to fly to Kabul to rescue the group’s workers and animals.

But Wallace said this was still not a “magic wand”. Insisting the biggest problem with evacuations in Kabul had been getting people safely into and through the airport, he said the chartered plane would merely “block the airfield” and “sit there empty” as the processing of the thousands of people trying to leave Kabul would be prioritised over the airlifting of animals.

Farthing has previously said the animals would be transported in the aircraft’s hold and that, once his staff were accommodated, any spare seats on the plane could be filled by other people cleared for passage by UK authorities, with the flight able to take 250 passengers in total.

Earlier, a Nowzad supporter in the UK, veterinary surgeon Dr Iain McGill, had said people were ready to take in the animals once brought to Britain.

McGill said that after the animals and the charity’s staff, the remaining 130 seats on the plane would be filled with at-risk Afghans.

    • Protest in Austria as government opposes taking in Afghan refugees

Protesters called on the Austrian government to take in Afghan refugees.

However, conservative chancellor Sebastian Kurz has ruled out accepting further refugees from Afghanistan while he is in office.

Over the last few years, Austria has taken around 44,000 Afghans in

Kurz says Sweden is the only country in Europe to have accepted more refugees from Afghanistan, and he believes Austria has ‘already made a disproportionately large contribution’.

Meanwhile, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said Spain would take in ‘as many people as possible’, as 290 Afghans arrived at Torrejon Air Base.

    • Austria: Protest in Vienna after Kurz opposes taking in any more Afghans

Protesters from the organisations SOS Balkanroute, Grandmas against right-wingers and Students against deportations gathered in Vienna on Tuesday calling on the government to take in Afghan refugees.

Protesters vocalised their dissatisfaction with the current conservative government led by Sebastian Kurz and Interior Minister Karl Nehammer as well as far-right figures such as Markus Sellner from the Identitarian Movement.

The protest came after Kurz said on Sunday he opposed taking any more Afghans now that the Taliban have taken over Afghanistan.

    • Spain: Interior Minister greets Afghan refugees at Torrejon airbase as arrivals continue

Afghans with connections to Spanish institutions in Afghanistan arrived at Torrejon Air Base on Tuesday.

Two-hundred-and-ninety Afghans arrived at the base taking the total number of those who have entered the country through Torrejon Air Base to 1,105.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska greeted the new arrivals and assured them “we’ll bring as many people as possible, everyone who is in danger until the last moment. We can do it.”

Under an agreement with the US, Spain could receive as many as 4,000 Afghans in two military bases.

SOT, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Minister of the Interior (Spanish): “I want to thank, first, the work of the diplomatic staff, the army, the GEO’s and the members of the UIP in the Kabul airport. They’re doing a decissive work, they’re there until the last moment, fulfilling the duty of the true public servers: protecting those in an objective and evident risk.”

    • Deutsche Pravda – Chancellor Angela Merkel makes no apologies but calls for continued support in Afghanistan

Germany will continue to support Afghans after the August 31 deadline, Chancellor Angela Merkel has told lawmakers. She added that Berlin would also not “shy away” from talks with the Taliban.

Germany is working “intensively” to evacuate Afghan staff ahead of a looming deadline, Chancellor Angela Merkel told lawmakers in the Bundestag on Wednesday.

Merkel’s remarks came after US President Joe Biden ruled out extending the deadline for evacuations beyond August 31.

German military aircraft have so far rescued over 4,600 people including German citizens and local support workers, according to the German Defense Ministry.

Merkel said that Germany would still try to help Afghans who worked with its soldiers and aid organisations and wish to leave Afghanistan even after the deadline.

“The end of the air bridge in a few days must not mean the end of efforts to protect Afghan helpers and help those Afghans who have been left in a bigger emergency with the takeover of the Taliban,” she said.

  5. Ah… So the Chinese are now openly funding and buddying up to the Taliban with eyes to having a close relationship in the near future. Doubters think that the Taliban will be deterred by the situation with the Uyghurs but they are wrong and obviously don’t know their history.

The fact is that Muslims are scared silly of the Chinese and wouldn’t dream of pissing them off as they did with Genghis Khan who nearly killed every single one of them in reprisal. The Muslims do not want any piece of the Chinese, thank you very much. They know their trickery wouldn’t work on them and they’d all end up dead…

But if the Chinese want to put in roads and hydroelectric dams and cash, what’s not to like. Just don’t mention the damn Uyghurs… (Why don’t they just spell it “Weegar”? The existing spelling is just not good enough…).

  12. 159 Dead, 593 Hospitalized in Illinois Breakthrough COVID Cases

According to data updated Wednesday by the Illinois Department of Public Health, 159 people in Illinois have died due to COVID-19 or complications after being fully vaccinated. That figure equates to 2.3% of COVID-19 deaths in the state since Jan. 1, officials said.

At least 593 fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized in Illinois, IDPH said. The state only reports breakthrough infections among those who have been hospitalized or died, following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH said.

Those totals mean eight more fully vaccinated individuals have died and 30 more have been hospitalized in the past week since the state last updated its reported numbers.

The state does not publicize the number of residents who tested positive after being fully vaccinated but did not die or require hospitalization in order to “help maximize the quality of the data collected on cases of greatest clinical and public health importance,” IDPH’s website reads.

A person is considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after receiving the second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna COVID vaccine, or two weeks after receiving the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Illinois’ top doctor said last week that breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in fully vaccinated residents are a “unicorn” as she again urged those who have not yet gotten vaccinated to do so.

“These vaccines are truly effective,” IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said. “You know, everyone has heard of a case or two of someone who had a breakthrough infection or breakthrough hospitalization, but it is, that is so far the unicorn, that you need to focus on the people who are not vaccinated, they’re the ones filling up the hospital as COVID patients.”

The recent surge of COVID-19 cases in certain parts of the state have been found in areas of lower vaccination rates, Ezike said.

“There is a very clear connection between where those case rates are growing the fastest and how well that area is vaccinated, i.e. the more highly vaccinated areas are having lower case rates,” she said.

She noted that the growing delta variant has a higher transmissibility that impacts more people at a time than previous variants. Within weeks, Ezike said Illinois has seen COVID cases double statewide.

Studies have shown that the delta variant spreads approximately 225% faster than the original strain of the virus. Studies have also shown that once a person catches the delta variant, they likely become infectious sooner, and that the virus grows more rapidly inside a person’s respiratory tract.

As the delta variant continues to spread, experts are continuing to push for more Americans to get the COVID vaccine.

All three of the vaccines currently authorized for emergency use by the FDA have shown to be largely effective against preventing serious illness and death due to COVID, and all three companies say that their vaccines are showing promise in preventing those outcomes with the delta variant as well.

Kamala Harris (Image: YouTube screen grab)

Somewhere out there in the world at large, a bad actor is employing some clandestine technology in an attempt to sicken American diplomats, and the latest incident appears to have struck very near to where the vice president was visiting. Two employees of the U.S. embassy in Vietnam came down with the illness.

The condition is known as “Havana Syndrome,” after the first sufferers of the sickness came down with it while working at the American embassy in Cuba. Shortly after those incidents, new cases of the illness began to be reported by American diplomats worldwide, including an incident that appeared to have occurred very near to the White House itself.

Just as Kamala Harris was getting set to travel out of Vietnam, another case of Havana Syndrome was identified.

The probabilities are increasing that China will try and seize Taiwan by force amid America’s disorganized exit from Afghanistan has tarnished U.S. prestige. Allies of the West, such as Japan and Taiwan, are set to hold a meeting about an increasingly aggressive China.

The Financial Times spoke with Masahisa Sato, a parliamentarian who manages foreign affairs for Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), on Tuesday, said discussions are needed about the implications of a China invasion of Taiwan because it would have “a serious impact” on Japan’s security and economy.

“That is how important we feel the situation in Taiwan is at the moment,” Sato said.

All US service members must get their Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible now that the Pfizer-BioNTech jab is fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

More than 800,000 service members out of around 1.4 million still need to get their shots, according to Pentagon data.

Those who haven’t gotten a shot face a wide range of punishments if they don’t, with the most severe being an investigation and court martial.

Of active duty forces, 68 percent are fully vaccinated and 76 percent have at least one dose, according to Pentagon press secretary John Kirby. Data is less clear for reserve and National Guard members.

    Cyberwar – Part One

Cybercrime often merges with cyberwarfare. The techniques of both are similar, even if their intentions are not. Yet, unlike their “real-world” counterparts, we cannot afford to treat the former as merely a law enforcement problem and the latter as a military problem. Today’s gnat is tomorrow’s nuclear-tipped missile.

In a recent article, former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton highlighted the cyberwarfare being waged on the West every day by Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. The assault is an accelerating proxy war, a coordinated terrorism campaign conducted by both hired criminals and military intelligence agencies, capable of great economic and societal damage. At the same time, even at lower intensity, it is a subtler attack on Western morale.

Directly, these attacks strike at parts of our electrical grid, our food supply, our energy providers, banks, business computer networks and government systems. Indirectly, they threaten our livelihoods and our sense of security and stability. That is, at least for the present, the most important thing about them.

The SolarWinds hack of 2020 compromised a top-tier provider of IT management services by injecting malware into the company’s routine software update to its 33,000 customers. Those victimized customers included hundreds of large companies, as well as the federal departments of Treasury, Commerce, and even Homeland Security. The hack was extremely sophisticated and operated for months before it was discovered. Cybersecurity analysts in and out of the government say conclusively it was the work of a hacking group they call “Nobelium,” operating with the support, if not the direct control, of the Russian government. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime has denied its involvement, as it always does. No one believes them.

  21. New NY governor discloses 12K additional COVID deaths previously obscured by Cuomo – Liberty Unyielding
    Daily Caller News Foundation
    3 minutes

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul disclosed on her first day in office nearly 12,000 COVID-19 deaths that were previously unreported in the state’s data tracker during former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration.

The New York State Department of Health’s COVID-19 data tracker reported Wednesday nearly 55,395 virus deaths in the state reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since the start of the pandemic, just under 12,000 more than the roughly 43,400 COVID-19 deaths disclosed in the state-managed tracker on Cuomo’s last day in office.

The discrepancy results from the Cuomo administration’s decision to report only laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in which patients died at hospitals, nursing homes, and adult care facilities. The Cuomo administration’s tally deliberately excluded New Yorkers who died from COVID-19 at their homes, hospices, state prisons or state-run homes for those with disabilities
