Reader’s Links for August 15, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Today marks a meaningful anniversary. One of the structural pillars of our society, Keynesian economic policy, bloomed in full on August 15, 1971.

    https://youtu.be/iRzr1QU6K1o

The matter is too complex, in my opinion, to blame President Nixon here. There was the draining of the gold stock by foreigners going on, the huge expense of the Vietnam war, and other matters that needed addressing.

However, a direct line can and will be drawn from that day to today in order to explain our current dilemma. Keynesian economic policies have crippled western civilization by financing the long march of collectivism, along with every ailment this entails. These policies have enabled endless wars that a gold standard would never allow. Countless lives have been lost while the working man and risk taker have been taxed into full submission. And make no mistake, the rise of communism, or fascism, or whatever else it is that you choose to call it that we are experiencing today, will fail. It will fail because it is a lie from head to toe.

Regardless, we still have the debt to deal with that our parasitic politicians and bureaucrats seem ever-too-eager to increase. In fact, one of the salient features of Keynesian economics is the belief that debt is money, while gold and silver are useless relics. Think about this. Of all the inversions you have heard leftists make, “debt is money” takes the cake. It sounds absurd because it is absurd.

    • The Project Syndicate link above is severely flawed in its opinion in that it gives Biden a pass on his horrific fiscal actions, and tries to express the sophistry that money printing in the name of social “equity”, or justice, is somehow justified. Of course, the opposite will be the result. Such is the false mantra that brought us where we are today.

As Taliban enter Kabul, evacuation of U.S. embassy is underway – with helicopters over compound; UPDATE: Taliban report premature?

A Boeing CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter appears over the U.S. embassy compound in Kabul, 15 Aug 2021. Image via Twitter

See update at the bottom. – J.E.

And there it is, the image so many have been waiting for.

Trending: What the report of three Fla. teachers dying of COVID in same day fails to tell you

It isn’t clear that anyone is actually being loaded onto the helicopters on the roof. I doubt it: the embassy compound is still secure, and loading is probably taking place on the ground.

At the same time, the news has broken in the last half hour that Taliban are entering Kabul from all directions.

The Taliban apparently don’t expect a big pitched battle with Afghan National Army troops. For good reason, it appears, given the report that Afghan government buildings are being evacuated as this goes to post.

U.S. not getting takers to host anti-terrorist ops in Afghanistan from Central Asian nations

Afghanistan, Aug 2021. WION video, YouTube

The real question about this move is who could possibly be surprised. The Wall Street Journal reports that “The [Biden] administration has previously said it was seeking to develop what it calls an ‘over-the-horizon’ capability to mount attacks inside Afghanistan if terrorist groups appear there once U.S. forces are gone.”

Readers will be shocked – shocked – to learn that nations around Afghanistan’s perimeter aren’t biting: “The administration has yet to secure access to Central Asian countries it would like to use to improve such an intervention capability, and CIA Director William Burns has told Congress that the removal of American forces would hamper his agency’s ability to gather intelligence within the country.”

It probably isn’t necessary to explain this. But it’s worth noting that if the CIA is concerned that intelligence gathering will be harder in Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal (which is a “no duh” forehead-slapper), Central Asian nations next door to Afghanistan will hardly want to be the ones hosting U.S. forces to attack terrorists over the border. If there’s retaliation by the terrorists, including their running mates who are likely to form groups in those adjacent nations, the other Stans will take it in the shorts – and probably with little warning.

  3. Why Obama’s Afghanistan strategy is bad faith with our troops

Allen West made an appeal this past weekend that has gone viral on the Web, on behalf of Army 1LT Clint Lorance, who has been sentenced to 20 years for the “murder” of two Taliban scouts in Kandahar Province in 2012.

West refers – correctly – to the following untenable deficiencies in the conditions under which our troops have to operate in Afghanistan:

  5. Canada expands resettlement program to bring more Afghans to safety

    News release

Ottawa, August 13, 2021—The Government of Canada continues to be deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and the risks it poses for many vulnerable Afghans. Canada’s special immigration program has already brought many Afghans to Canada—and our teams there, here and across the world are working around the clock to bring as many people as possible to safety.

As the Taliban continues to take over more of Afghanistan, Afghans’ lives are under threat—and many have already fled the country. To help address the growing humanitarian crisis, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada will resettle 20,000 vulnerable Afghans threatened by the Taliban and forced to flee Afghanistan.

Canada will continue to implement the special immigration program for Afghans who contributed to Canada’s efforts in Afghanistan. In addition, we will introduce a special program to focus on particularly vulnerable groups that are already welcomed to Canada through existing resettlement streams, including women leaders, human rights defenders, journalists, persecuted religious minorities, LGBTI individuals, and family members of previously resettled interpreters. The program will welcome government-supported and privately sponsored refugees, along with those sponsored by family already in Canada.

By welcoming these Afghans, Canada will help ease the burden that Afghanistan’s neighbours are shouldering and offer these individuals a permanent home here. We will be engaging with our international and domestic partners, private sponsors and settlement organizations to begin implementing the new program. While applicants must meet all the usual admissibility requirements, processing timelines will be expedited.

As with previous large-scale resettlement efforts, we welcome the support of the many Canadians who want to lend a hand. For example, we’re expanding our partnership with the Manmeet Singh Bhullar Foundation to resettle hundreds of persecuted Afghan Sikhs and Hindus. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen an outpouring of goodwill from Canadians across the country, who are eager to open their homes and their hearts.

This enthusiastic support will continue to guide our efforts as we welcome more Afghan refugees to safety in Canada.

    Quotes
“Offering refuge to the world’s most vulnerable speaks to who we are as Canadians, particularly in times of crisis. As more Afghan refugees continue to seek shelter in Canada, we’re redoubling our efforts to help 20,000 Afghans refugees—who remain vulnerable wherever they go—find safety here. The situation in Afghanistan is heartbreaking, and Canada will not stand idly by.”

    – The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, P.C., M.P., Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

“Canadians are deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. People around the world know they can count on Canada to support them in times of need, and Canada will be there for vulnerable Afghans. Women leaders, human rights defenders, journalists, religious minorities, LGBTI individuals, and others covered by this program will be safe here in Canada, and I look forward to welcoming them to our country.”

    – The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, P.C., M.P., Minister of National Defence

“As Minister of Foreign Affairs, I am following the situation in Afghanistan very carefully. I remain in close contact with allies as well as our Ambassador in Kabul, and continue to monitor the security situation carefully. Afghans have put their lives at great risk to support Canada in helping Afghans achieve significant democratic, human rights, education, health and security gains over the past twenty years. We owe them a debt of gratitude and we will continue our efforts to bring them to safety.”

      • Col. Kemp was the commander of British forces in Afg-ugh:

NAIVE BIDEN HAS CONDEMNED THE UNITED STATES TO STRATEGIC IRRELEVANCE

This debacle is set to become an indelible stain on Biden’s presidency. Not only is America’s standing in the world profoundly diminished, Biden’s unconditional withdrawal has also undermined the entire credibility of NATO, including British forces, which had no choice but to follow the US out. Not least among the consequences will be the strengthening of jihadists everywhere, exactly what the 2001 intervention aimed to prevent.

Biden said in July that the future of Afghanistan would be in the hands of other countries in the region. That makes matters far worse.

Pakistan created the Taliban and armed and funded the 20-year campaign against Western and Afghan forces that has taken it to the gates of Kabul. Reportedly Pakistan has been sending militias to fight alongside the Taliban in their assault on Afghan cities.

Likewise, China, Iran and Russia have all been supporting the Taliban for years and will soon be cashing in to pillage resources and exploit strategic leverage against the West. India, the only regional player that could have a constructive role, will be firmly excluded by Pakistan and China.

Biden claimed he was pulling out of Afghanistan to confront Russia and China. His catastrophic decision will undermine any such efforts. Beijing and Moscow will be emboldened by this show of American weakness, and countries we had hoped to entice into the Western sphere and away from authoritarian regimes will see us as fairweather allies and the authoritarians as more dependable partners.

It took the US over 15 years, until the 1991 Gulf war, to recover from the ignominy of Vietnam yet the outcome there was not as catastrophic as Afghanistan promises to be.

The anniversary of 9/11 — and Biden’s legacy — are set to be marked by US strategic defeat, the rape of Afghanistan and the rise of global jihadists to at least equal the threat from Islamic State at its height.

    • Pelosi Statement on Afghanistan

“The President is to be commended for the clarity of purpose of his statement on Afghanistan and the actions he has taken.

“The Taliban must know that the world is watching its actions. We are deeply concerned about reports regarding the Taliban’s brutal treatment of all Afghans, especially women and girls.

The U.S., the international community and the Afghan government must do everything we can to protect women and girls from inhumane treatment by the Taliban.

“Any political settlement that the Afghans pursue to avert bloodshed must include having women at the table. The fate of women and girls in Afghanistan is critical to the future of Afghanistan. As we strive to assist women, we must recognize that their voices are important, and all must listen to them for solutions, respectful of their culture. There is bipartisan support to assist the women and girls of Afghanistan. One of the successes of U.S.- NATO cooperation in Afghanistan was the progress made by women and girls. We must all continue to work together to ensure that is not eroded.

“Once again, I want to acknowledge the clarity of purpose of President Biden’s statement and the wisdom of his actions. Congress shares the President’s concern for Afghans who have assisted U.S. efforts in country, and we passed Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) legislation to provide for their relocation on a strong, bipartisan basis.

“Most of all, we join the President in acknowledging the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and their families.”

Over the next 48 hours, we will have expanded our security presence to nearly 6,000 troops, with a mission focused solely on facilitating these efforts and will be taking over air traffic control.

Tomorrow and over the coming days, we will be transferring out of the country thousands of American citizens who have been resident in Afghanistan, as well as locally employed staff of the U.S. mission in Kabul and their families and other particularly vulnerable Afghan nationals.

And we will accelerate the evacuation of thousands of Afghans eligible for U.S. Special Immigrant Visas, nearly 2,000 of whom have already arrived in the United States over the past two weeks.

For all categories, Afghans who have cleared security screening will continue to be transferred directly to the United States.

And we will find additional locations for those yet to be screened.

Alma Center finds extensive network connects entire regions of Lebanon; some tunnels are big enough to allow pickup trucks with multi-barrel rocket launchers to fire, vanish and re-emerge miles away from where attack was launched….

“In our estimation, the cumulative length of all the tunnels can reach up to hundreds of kilometers….” Like Hamas tunnels, the Lebanese tunnels contain underground command and control rooms, weapons and supply depots, field hospitals and shafts used to fire a wide range of rockets and missiles.

“The discovery of the tunnel network in Gaza leads to the conclusion that this has been happening in Lebanon for a long time. The Iranians and North Koreans are mentors for both organizations….

  9. Crisis in Tunisia: The Brotherhood’s trail of failures

Looking at the intricacies of the Tunisian political scene, we see that the country is experiencing an exceptional situation that is unlike that of any other Arab country.

Some even consider the Muslim Brotherhood in Tunisia to be not like other branches scattered in several Arab countries. They believe that this Brotherhood branch has gained different experiences as a result of their leaders having stayed in Western capitals for many years.

But the Tunisian experience since 2011 has shown that Tunisia’s Brotherhood carries the same organizational genes as their counterparts in Egypt, Gaza, Yemen, Syria and elsewhere … ideological genes contrary to pluralism….

The Tunisian crisis mirrors the crisis of the Muslim Brotherhood and its groups in different countries. The organization is in total denial of its failure in politics. It has practiced politics according to a haughty hermetic logic, which does not accept pluralism, does not understand the lessons of the past and does not accept learning from others.

It has tried to deceive everyone, including the people, only to lose both politics and the people. It cannot even keep its status as a religious guidance group anymore.

Some Israelis and pro-Israel figures tend to see this through a lens of the Iranian threat to the region. In this narrative the rise of Iran means Israel and the Gulf must cooperate. But this mistaken understanding of the paradigm misunderstands the UAE’s interest in peace and stability, rather than any tensions with Iran. It also fails to realize the important focus the UAE and its friends have on concerns over the Muslim Brotherhood and extremists in the region.

[Nobody’s talking about the MB tools, ISIS/al-Q, that continue to kill Eygptians in the Sinai.]
      ……
This complex framework, in which Israel is also fighting Hamas and Hamas is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, which is linked to the leadership of Turkey and sometimes to Qatar, is part of a larger regional puzzle.

The Brotherhood was pushed from power in Egypt in 2013 shortly after taking power. But it has not gone away and some of its key proponents and friends in the West have sought to push agendas that are against the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

  10. Porn sites are not removing antisemitic content, watchdog group says

Antisemitic porn videos are trending on adult content websites, which ignore calls to remove them, an Israel-based watchdog group said.
The nonprofit group, Fighting Online Antisemitism, or FOA, has identified dozens of videos on major adult content sites. Some feature actors dressed as Nazi officers acting out rape scenes of actresses portraying Jewish women.

Attempts to flag the videos and have them removed have gone unanswered, FOA told the news site Ice.co.il last week.
Videos featuring underage subjects or revenge porn are pulled off quickly, Tomer Aldubi, the founder of FOA, told Ice. But when it comes to antisemitism about Jews, he said, “the porn giants seem to not want to address it.”

In some of the videos in question, the hateful content is in the title alone, advertising videos whose actual content does not reference ethnicity as depicting a “Palestinian raping a Jew,” as one video title states. The number of videos involving Jews on porn sites has proliferated in recent years, according to the article.

    • ISRAEL – 52-year-old woman hospitalized after likely allergic reaction from COVID booster

Report says woman, who is in serious but stable condition, also required hospitalization after her 2nd vaccine dose

A woman in her 50s was hospitalized in serious condition after likely suffering an allergic reaction from a COVID-19 booster shot, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

She was hospitalized at Ziv Medical Center in the northern city of Safed on Friday, when Israel began offering third doses of coronavirus vaccines to anyone over 50, becoming the first country to do so.

The woman, 52, remains in serious yet stable condition, according to the ministry, adding that she was being examined for “other possibilities that led to her medical condition.”

The Health Ministry said it was also looking into the details of the case.

“An allergic reaction to vaccines is a known and rare phenomenon. Whoever develops an allergic reaction after receiving any vaccine dose is advised not to get vaccinated before consulting their doctor,” the ministry said in a statement.

It appeared to be the first case in Israel of someone having a major allergic reaction after receiving a third vaccine dose, which 813,216 people have received as of Friday.

Army Radio reported that she also developed an allergic reaction after receiving her second shot and required hospitalization. It was unclear if she had consulted with a doctor before getting the third dose.

Along with those over 50, Israel on Friday also began offering booster shots to medical staff and those with underlying illness, as well as prisoners and wardens.

Last month, Israel became the first country in the world to begin administering booster shots to those over 60. It is also giving third vaccine shots to those with weakened immune systems, which United States regulators also gave authorization to on Thursday.

“I really hope that as many people as possible my age, 50 and older, will be vaccinated with the third dose,” Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz, 56, said while getting his booster shot.

“Now is a critical time. This is the most effective tool we have to stop the Delta variant. We are in a very big outbreak and this is a step that everybody can take,” he added.

The World Health Organization has called for a moratorium on booster shots until at least the end of September, in order to address inequalities in global dose distribution.

But Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has said that Israel is doing the world a “great service” by administering the third doses and sharing their results.

It has been prevoiusly reported that Bennett had put significant pressure on health officials, cabinet members and even members of the advisory panel to authorize booster shots for people over the age of 40.

Additionally, on Thursday, Bennett spoke with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla and urged him to speed up regulatory approval of the pharmaceutical giant’s COVID-19 vaccine for those under the age of 12.

The decision to open up booster shots to those aged over 50 in Israel came as Health Ministry data showed no signs of the virus outbreak slowing.

According to the latest figures on Friday, 453 people are in serious condition from COVID.

Health Ministry data showed that among unvaccinated Israelis aged 60 and over, there are 118.8 people per 100,000 in serious condition. Among the vaccinated, the figure is 18.5 per 100,000, and the partially vaccinated figure was 40.5.

There were 6,083 people diagnosed with COVID-19 on Thursday, and another 3,659 as of Friday afternoon.

There were 44,730 active coronavirus cases in Israel, with 786 hospitalized patients in total. The death toll stands at 6,611.
