Reader’s Links for August 13, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

U.S. to deploy troops to evacuate embassy in Afghanistan; waiting staff to be relocated for security

Taliban get the selfies while proclaiming takeover of an Afghan town in August 2021. UK Sun video, YouTube

Updates at bottom. Update III is a doozy.

Cue the Verdi choruses. It’s getting real in Afghanistan. News services reported a few hours ago that personnel from the U.S. embassy in Kabul are being relocated while they await decisions about the embassy’s immediate future. There are about 1,400 personnel said to still be with the embassy, although it’s not clear if all of those are American officials.

That type of move typically precedes a decision to evacuate, and it now appears, as posted in the last hour as this is being written, that we’re deploying additional troops to Kabul to conduct what’s called a non-combatant evacuation operation, or NEO.

Trending: Rail project has ‘unimaginable’ cost overruns and out-of-touch ambitions

There are currently 650 U.S. military personnel at Kabul airport and the embassy for security (embassy security is provided by the Marines).

    • It is worth you time to read the whole think, read it through and the pay close attention to update 3, it shows the normal SNAFU (Situtation Normal All F—– UP).

The situtation is confused and there is no clear answer to what is being done about the Afghan’s that worked for us. Translators and other staff, these people risk their lives working for us and we owe it to them to get them and their families to safety.

The Vaccine Scientist Spreading Vaccine Misinformation

Robert Malone claims to have invented mRNA technology. Why is he trying so hard to undermine its use?

    By Tom Bartlett

Robert Malone—a medical doctor and an infectious-disease researcher—recently suggested that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines might actually make COVID-19 infections worse.

[…]In that alternate media universe, Robert Malone’s star is ascendant. He started popping up on podcasts and cable news shows a few months ago, presented as a scientific expert, arguing that the approval process for the vaccines had been unwisely rushed.

[…]He told Tucker Carlson that the public doesn’t have enough information to decide whether to get vaccinated.

He told Glenn Beck that offering incentives for taking vaccines is unethical.

[…]He’s sowed doubt about the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines on pretty much any podcast or YouTube channel that will have him.

    • CBC – Federal government to require vaccinations for all federal public servants, air and train passengers

‘We need to reach as many Canadians as we possibly can’ — Transport Minister Omar Alghabra

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced today that the federal government will soon require that all public servants be vaccinated — a mandate that he said will also be implemented by Crown corporations and other federally regulated businesses in the coming weeks.

While Canada’s vaccination rate is among the highest in the world — 81 per cent of all eligible Canadians have had at least one dose — Alghabra said the country “must do better.”

“We need to reach as many Canadians as we possibly can,” he said.

After a blitz in April and May, the number of new first doses being administered daily has been stuck at well under 100,000 since mid-June.

There are still more than 5.7 million people over the age of 12 who have chosen to forgo a shot altogether, or to wait for a later date. The number of unvaccinated Canadians is roughly equivalent to everyone living in the Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton metropolitan areas combined.

Starting as soon as next month, the vaccine will be made mandatory for federal employees and those working in some federally regulated industries (airlines and railways, among others) in an effort to boost stalled vaccination rates.

The government says it also “expects” that other employers in federally regulated sectors — like banking, broadcasting and telecommunication — will require vaccination for their employees. “The government will work with these employers to ensure this result,” the government said in a statement announcing the new mandate.

There are more than 300,000 federal public servants and tens of thousands more people are working in industries that fall under the federal labour code.

Alghabra said the government will work expeditiously with public service unions and employers to get the mandate in place “by the end of October” at the latest.

This is not a recommendation. Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said that all public servants and some employees in federally regulated sectors must comply with the vaccine mandate or risk losing their jobs.

“This is a mandatory requirement to go to work in a federal workplace or work in the government of Canada,” he said.

“Obviously, there will be certain individuals for medical reasons that will not be able to be vaccinated and the appropriate officials will work with them to ensure that the appropriate measures are in place.”

Beyond the mandatory vaccination requirement for federal employees, Alghabra said, a similar mandate will be extended to “certain travellers.”

Starting soon, all commercial air travellers and passengers on interprovincial trains and large marine vessels with overnight accommodations (such as cruise ships) will have to be vaccinated, Alghabra said. He said accommodations will be made for “those few who are unable to be vaccinated,” such as testing and screening.

“Vaccine requirements in the transportation sector will help protect the safety of employees, their families, passengers, their communities and all Canadians. And more broadly, it will hasten Canada’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

Asked when these measures for travellers would take effect, Alghabra said the government is developing “a measured and practical approach to requiring vaccines in these sectors as quickly as possible.”

With a fourth wave of new infections poised to hit Canada in the coming weeks, experts say boosting vaccine coverage will protect the country’s health care system from again being overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients.

To date, the vast majority of new infections have been among the unvaccinated, even though they make up an increasingly smaller segment of the population.

There have been a number of “breakthrough” cases among the fully vaccinated but early data suggest those with two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are much less likely to require hospitalization or die from the virus.

Proponents of mandatory shots maintain it’s the best way to develop herd immunity, protect the collective health of Canadians and rid the country of a very serious disease. Almost universal vaccine coverage has eradicated other diseases, such as polio and tetanus.

Critics, meanwhile, say that requiring vaccines is a heavy-handed approach that could lead to discrimination against the unvaccinated.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole said vaccines are “the most important tool in the fight against COVID-19” and the party encourages “every Canadian who is able to get one.”

But when asked about the federal mandate, the spokesperson said that “Conservatives support Canadians’ right to determine their own health choices.”

Before the new requirements were announced Friday, Conservative MP David Yurdiga, who represents Fort McMurray, Alta. in the Commons, said a government plan to make vaccination mandatory for federal bureaucrats was “another example of the Liberals using severe government overreach for political gain.”

Yurdiga said forcing these workers to get a vaccine is a “tyrannical” idea that should give all Canadians pause.

“Canadians deserve the right to liberty, whether they choose to be vaccinated or not. Mandating the vaccine as a requirement to work would be the beginning of a slippery slope,” Yurdiga said.

The MP said such a policy would punish Canadians for “what they choose to do with their bodies.”

While there’s certain to be resistance from some circles, at least one federal public service union said Friday it’s open to the mandate.

Debi Daviau is president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, which represents 60,000 bureaucrats across the country. She said in a media statement that the union “welcomes all efforts to increase vaccination coverage in Canada.”

“That includes a vaccine policy in the federal government that makes vaccines more accessible to our members and accommodates legitimate reasons for which an employee may not be vaccinated.”

Mark Porter, executive vice-president of people and culture at WestJet, said the airline would be “working diligently to implement the government’s policy on mandatory vaccines for airline employees.”

“Vaccinations are the most effective way to ensure the safety of our guests and employees, while curbing the spread of COVID-19,” he said, promising to work with employees who may have questions about the new requirement.

Goldy Hyder, president and CEO of the Business Council of Canada, said requiring vaccines for some workers is “absolutely the right thing to do.

“These measures should be implemented as soon as possible” so that Canada can avoid further pandemic-related economic disruption, he said.

“We must do better if we hope to avert a significant fourth wave. Canadians and Canadian businesses cannot endure any more lockdowns.”

    • 27 FULLY VACCINATED people aboard Carnival cruise test positive

BELIZE CITY (AP) — Twenty-seven people aboard a Carnival cruise tested positive for COVID-19 just before the ship made a stop in Belize City this week, according to the Belize Tourism Board.

The positive cases were among 26 crew members and one passenger on the Carnival Vista, which is carrying over 1,400 crew and nearly 3,000 passengers, the board said in a statement. The ship arrived Wednesday in Belize City.

All 27 were vaccinated, had mild or no symptoms, and were in isolation, according to the statement. The tourism board said 99.98% of the ship’s crew was vaccinated, as well as 96.5% of its passengers.

The Washington Post reported Carnival said it announced last week that there were positive cases on board, but the cruise line did not not give specific numbers. The ship left from Galveston, Texas, according to the Post.

Carnival is requiring passengers to be vaccinated, though there are exceptions for children and people with medical issues. The cruise line said in a statement Aug. 4 that passengers must wear a mask in certain indoor areas, and provide a negative COVID test within three days of embarkment for cruises beginning Aug. 14.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on its website that it had investigated the Carnival Vista and the ship remains under observation.

    • Video: Philadelphia Announces DOUBLE Mask Mandate For Government Workers

After September 1st ALL new hires MUST be vaccinated; Everyone else has to go back to masking indoors or proving vaccination status

The Mayor and Health Commissioner of Philadelphia dropped an announcement Wednesday that unvaccinated city employees will need to wear two masks while working indoors and that all new hires after September 1 will have to be vaccinated.

The Philadelphia Inquirer noted the details of Mayor Jim Kenney and acting Health Commissioner Cheryl Bettigole’s announcement.

During a remote press briefing, Bettigole demonstrated that wearing two masks is “cumbersome,” and stated that “Luckily there is something else that you could do to protect yourself: You could be vaccinated.”

      WATCH :

      + VIDEO

More broadly, the rules in Philadelphia on masks to enter events spaces and businesses are somewhat unclear because it will fall on businesses themselves to enforce the measures. Business owners are faced with either mandating masks indoors or setting up their own vaccination status checking system for both customers and employees.

      The report states:

      The report states:

Businesses seeking to avoid the mask mandate should have clear signage at their entrances indicating they will be verifying customers’ vaccination status… Those found out of compliance will first be warned and given time to correct, then could be forced to close and pay a $315 fine for re-inspection.

Outdoor events will see those in attendance having to wear masks if there are more than 1000 people, unless everyone is seated.

ABC6 News also reported on the new confusing mask mandate in the city.

      Watch:

Mayor Kenney declared that “It goes without saying that none of us want to be here discussing restrictions and policies needed to stem the spread of COVID-19. The science is clear: These measures will protect Philadelphians and save lives.”

When Kenney was asked if even more restrictive policies could be put into place going forward, he replied “Not if everyone acts like a mature adult.”

“I’m upset that people just can’t act in the way they are supposed to act … and do what’s good for everybody,” Kenney continued.

”Please, just get the vaccine,” Kenney said, adding “This could all be avoided if we did that.”

This all comes just two months after the city lifted its 14-month-long mask mandate and other limits on businesses and events.

As we have noted, several other cities are beginning to enforce draconian vaccine mandates, essentially locking out those who haven’t taken the shots.

FOX – Philadelphia issues new mask mandates as COVID-19 cases soar

FOX 29’s Alex Holley talked with the acting health commissioner for the City of Philadelphia, Dr. Cheryl Bettigole, about the new mask mandate issued that started Thursday at midnight and why they made the decision to put the mandate in place.

    • Philadelphia Department of Public Health – Summer COVID-19 Briefing August 11th, [2021]

      ( 59 min 18 )

PHILADELPHIA—In response to growing numbers of new COVID-19 cases in Philadelphia, and an increase in hospitalizations, the City announced new policies designed to slow the spread of the dangerous Delta variant.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2021, masks will be required indoors at all Philadelphia businesses and institutions that do not require vaccination for employees and patrons. Masks will also be required in all outdoor, unseated gatherings of more than 1,000 people.

As of 12:01 a.m. September 1, all City employees will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or be double-masked when working in enclosed workspaces with others.

“The updated policies we announced today are critical to slowing the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19, which is more dangerous and transmissible than earlier forms of the virus,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “The science is clear: these measures will protect Philadelphians and save lives. We strongly urge everyone who has not yet received the vaccine to get it immediately; it is the best and safest way we can get through this deadly and unpredictable pandemic. We flattened the curve before and we must do everything in our power to do it again.”

“Cities and states throughout the United States are seeing a rise in new COVID cases,” said Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole. “To stop the spread of the dangerous Delta variant and to protect those too young to be vaccinated, we are instituting new policies that have been proven to prevent the spread of COVID. Masks and vaccines make a real difference in the spread and severity of this infection.”

The indoor mask mandate beginning on August 12 requires that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wears a mask in all Philadelphia businesses and institutions that do not have an enforced vaccine requirement. City of Philadelphia buildings do not have a vaccine requirement, so masks are required for staff, visitors, and patrons in public areas, regardless of vaccination status.

Indoor dining will be allowed to continue in the following cases:

In restaurants that require proof of vaccination, and in restaurants that do not require proof of vaccination, provided masks are worn by patrons and staff the entire time while not seated and eating or drinking.
Additionally, masks will be required at all non-seated outdoor events in the City of Philadelphia with greater than 1,000 attendees.

On September 1, all new City of Philadelphia employees will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and all current employees will be required to be fully vaccinated or be double-masked when working in enclosed workspaces with others. Unvaccinated staff will be required to wear a disposable surgical mask, which can be supplied by the City, underneath of a cloth mask. As soon as two weeks have elapsed since their final dose of COVID vaccine have passed, employees will no longer be required to be double-masked at work.

On July 5, Philadelphia reported the lowest number of average new cases of COVID of the pandemic, when the city averaged 23 new cases per day. Only August 9, the average new cases of COVID reported by the City was 180. The average number of new cases per day in Philadelphia has doubled three times in a month.

On July 19, the City reported only 48 people in Philadelphia hospitals due to COVID. On August 9, the City reported 118 people in Philadelphia hospitals due to COVID, more than double the previous low.

    • Oregon National Guard troops to help hospitals struggling with COVID patients

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) announced on Friday that she would be sending up to 1,500 Oregon National Guard troops to help hospitals deal with the surge in delta variant COVID-19 cases.

“I cannot emphasize enough the seriousness of this crisis for all Oregonians, especially those needing emergency and intensive care,” she said.

“When our hospitals are full with COVID-19 patients, there may not be room for someone needing care after a car crash, a heart attack, or other emergency situation.”

The governor said on Friday there are 733 Oregonians hospitalized with severe cases of COVID-19, including 185 in intensive care units.

“The harsh, and frustrating reality is that the Delta variant has changed everything. Delta is highly contagious, and we must take action now,” she said.

Beginning August 20, an initial 500 Guard members will be deployed to hospitals around the state to provide logistical support as materials handlers and equipment runners, as well as assisting with COVID-19 testing and other hospital operations.

Brown pleaded with Oregonians to get vaccinated if they haven’t yet, “If you have been waiting to get vaccinated, go do it today. Vaccines are safe, effective, and widely available. And, when you go out in public today, wear a mask. Masks are a simple and effective way for all of us to help slow the spread of COVID-19.”

Many hospitals run close to capacity most of the time as they care for patients with heart attacks, strokes and normal health conditions.

Oregon Health & Science University emergency room doctor, David Zonies, said on Friday he had maybe three intensive care beds available, out of 80, “Historically we’ve never had to have a waitlist for people to come in for a critical care bed and that’s what we’re now experiencing.”

OHSU like many health systems is getting patients referred from hospitals across Oregon that have reached their capacity because of the delta variant.

“We have patients that are severely ill in our emergency department that need to be in an ICU,” Zonies said. “They need to be in an inpatient bed and that’s what we’re dealing with now.”

Zonies said while the hospital has 80 ICU beds, it can’t staff all of them because of the shortages of nursing staff, “And it’s not just OHSU, this is a nationwide problem,” Zonies said.

Columbia Memorial in Astoria has canceled elective surgeries. Legacy Health system plans to reinstitute visitor restrictions on Monday.

“It is like watching a train wreck coming and knowing that there’s an opportunity to switch tracks, yet we feel helpless while we watch unnecessary loss of life,” Zonies said. “That is why it is essential that we all do our part to get vaccinated and wear a mask indoors.”

Dr. Grant Niskanen, of Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, said he’s seeing younger, sicker patients, “We had one person a couple weeks ago that got a lung transplant … we have a second person that now is being evaluated for a lung transplant, and when I talk about the patients — like nine or 10 that are currently in our hospital, that’s for an acute infection — that’s not talking about the four or five that have been here for 20 plus days, who are no longer infected, but still need such amounts of high flow oxygen that we’re unable to send them home.”

Dr. Niskanen said the key to stopping the virus is to get vaccinated, “If we all were vaccinated. This would shut down the spread of the virus and shut down the mutations and the variants that are occurring.”

  9. Now Even Science Demonstrates Islamic Aggression – Frontpagemag
    Raymond Ibrahim
    6-7 minutes

    Recent DNA findings concerning Turks.

Raymond Ibrahim is a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.

Along with Islamic doctrine and history, one can now add science to the list of things that demonstrate Islamic aggression.

Ancestry.com, a company that operates a network of genealogical and historical records, and provides DNA ancestry kits, recently asserted what history already knows: most of the denizens of Turkey are not Turks but rather the descendants of Christian peoples, mostly Greeks, who lived in Anatolia well over a millennium before the Turks invaded, but converted, due to Islam’s three choices (conversion, jizya/submission, or death).

As might be expected, many Turks, who tend to be zealous over their heritage, are outraged at finding that their ancestors were not conquering Turks but conquered infidels. This finding also underscores a vicious cycle I’ve discussed before: most of those Muslims who today persecute the indigenous Christians in their midst—and Turks rank among them—are themselves the descendants of Christians who converted to Islam to cease their own persecution.

One wonders how long before DNA studies reveal another, even more unflattering fact: the bloodline of conquering Muslims—Turks chief among them—is further adulterated with the blood of European concubines, sex-slaves, many millions of which were imported over the centuries by Turks, Tatars, Barbary corsairs, and various other Muslim peoples. The historical record is clear on this.

Solving the mystery of the Druze – a 2,000-year-old odyssey
      […]
The Druze have long preferred to live among high mountains, which has helped them maintain their close social structure, as well as providing them with protection. Our results indicate that the Druze habitation in high mountains is an ancient practice, one that their ancestors brought with them from what is now Iraq, Armenia and Turkey. But why did they come to the Middle East? Can DNA help us answer that?
      […]
Fortunately, since the Druze maintain a close-group social structure, each group preserved a different aspect of the Druze history. Genetic testing is thereby able to determine that the Druze DNA experienced its last major admixture event, where Druze mixed with local Levantines (Syrians), between the early ninth century and the early 12th century. The date overlaps with the expansion of the Seljuk Turkish Empire into the Levant during the 11th century to fight the Crusaders.

We know that after pushing away the invaders, the Seljuks settled in Iran, Anatolia and Syria, and that the Druze were first recorded in that region around 150 years later. The genetic similarity between Druze and Armenians supports speculation that they had Seljuk ancestors…

  10. Communist China Continues Illegal Actions in the South China Sea

Five years ago, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, in a legally binding decision, ruled against Communist China’s claims to sovereignty over most of the South China Sea. China continues vehemently to reject the ruling in its entirety. In March, a huge Chinese fishing fleet descended on Whitsun Reef, which lies within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines. The Philippine government called on China to cease “militarizing the area”. Pictured: Whitsun Reef, as seen from space. (Image Source: United States Geological Survey/NASA/Wikimedia Commons)

It has been five years since the Permanent Court of Arbitration, in a legally binding decision known as the South China Sea Arbitration Case, ruled against Communist China’s claims to sovereignty over most of the South China Sea.

The Philippine government filed the case against China in 2013 after China seized a reef over which both countries claim sovereignty. In addition to ruling against China’s claim of historic rights to the South China Sea, the court found that China had violated the Philippines’ sovereign rights in its exclusive economic zone by interfering with its fishing and petroleum exploration, as well as by constructing artificial islands in the Spratly Islands archipelago, which had caused “severe harm to the coral reef environment”

Judging people by the content of their character instead of the color of their skin is too simple to the progressive left these days.

We’ve seen this mindset exemplified in critical race theory, which teaches students that the past determines their future and that they are born with an inherent potential (or lack of potential) for success on the basis of skin color.

It’s a fatalistic and unfair take on the world that encourages racial minorities to believe they are somehow inherently less qualified than and suppressed by their white counterparts.

As federal prosecutors continue their criminal probes into Hunter Biden’s taxes and international business dealings, the President’s son — shuttling between Washington DC and a sprawling Los Angeles home — is lying low, consulting with lawyers and focusing on his new career in art.

Biden, who turns 51 next week, is prepping a solo show with Soho art dealer Georges Berges, who currently represents Sylvester Stallone. Berges was once arrested for “terrorist threats” and assault with a deadly weapon in California and has strong ties to China.

Biden, who continues to hold business interests in a billion-dollar Chinese investment firm, recently moved to a sprawling Venice Beach rental with his wife Melissa Cohen and 10 month old son, according to the Daily Mail. He was previously living in a Hollywood Hills home where he had set up an art studio.
