Reader’s Links for July 24, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

I knew it! It’s all going according to plan. First, they’re going to distract us with some tedious age-old sexual harassment charges against Governor Cuomo, then they’ll let the real crime sink into the memory hole and be forgotten as who knows what happens in the harassment case. Personally, I don’t give a damn about his delinquent sex life or his staff complaints but I care a great deal about all the people that died unnecessarily due to Andrew Cuomo’s evil spiteful policies concerning nursing homes and the virus…

Now watch as this evil corrupt machine lets Andrew Cuomo off the hook for the thousands of deaths that he caused out of his hatred of Donald Trump and nothing else. Cuomo deserves to die by lethal injection right along with Dr. Fauci…

Behold as the Democrats get away with serious crimes one more time…

Thousands of anti-lockdown protesters marched through Melbourne’s central business district (CBD) on Saturday, as Melbourne is still under stay at home laws under its fifth lockdown since the pandemic began.

Melbourne’s current lockdown is due to be lifted on Tuesday at 23:59 local time (13:59 GMT) but many were not deterred and marched freely through the CBD’s streets before crowding in front of the GPO on Bourke St.

Many are frustrated by the recurring lockdowns and looking for an alternative approach while others deny the existence of the pandemic and do not want to follow the governments health advice.

The House Freedom Caucus sent a letter to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Friday requesting that he attempt to remove House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from her position as Speaker after a week of drama on Capitol Hill.

The move is the most recent development in a series of actions taken by members of both parties over the past week with regard to the formation of the January 6 Select Committee.

The caucus wrote to McCarthy, saying that they “respectfully request that you pursue the authorization of the House Republican Conference, pursuant to Conference rules, to file and bring up a privileged motion by July 31, 2021, to vacate the chair and end Nancy Pelosi’s authoritarian reign as Speaker of the House.”

With a recent history that includes two draconian foreign occupations and mandatory Communism in the rearview, the Czech Republic is moving to protect the right to keep and bear arms.

English-language Radio Prague International, as well as a wide variety of Czech-based news outlets, reports that the Czech Senate this week has voted to incorporate the right of individual armed defense to the country’s Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.

Such proposals require a three-fifths majority of the chamber, or 45 votes, to pass and cannot be vetoed by the country’s president. The measure proved popular, earning the vote of 54 out of 74 lawmakers. It was brought to the body by a petition from over 100,000 gun owners and hunters as a direct response to civilian disarmament trends within the increasingly progressive European Union.

  9. the telegraph – Covid could be spread through flatulence, say ministers

Source says officials have read ‘credible-looking stuff’ on theory from other countries including Australia

The official advice is to open a window to increase ventilation and slow the spread of Covid, but now there could be an added incentive – the virus may also be spread by flatulence.

Ministers have privately pointed to evidence that Covid could be spread by people breaking wind in confined spaces such as lavatories. One said they had read “credible-looking stuff on it” from other countries, although government scientists are yet to produce a paper on the matter.

The source said there had been evidence of a “genomical-linked tracing connection between two individuals from a [lavatory] cubicle in Australia.”

There were also “well-documented cases of diseases spreading through waste pipes during lockdowns in Hong Kong when the U-bend had dried out”.

The science is not definitive, however, and another minister told The Telegraph that as Covid is “a respiratory disease, transmission and shedding is mostly taking place through the mouth and actually mainly the nose”.

A spokesman for Boris Johnson said he was not aware of claims that the virus can be spread by flatulence. The spokesman added: “We keep the latest scientific evidence under review.”

Healthy people tend to break wind between five to 25 times a day, and testing has found that SARS-CoV-2 can be present in faecal material.

The risk of spreading Covid this way is thought to be less, however, because wearing underpants and clothes below the waist would act to filter out harmful particles in the same way a face mask can.

Suggestions of spreading the virus through flatulence first emerged in Australia last year when Norman Swan, an Australian medic, advised on an ABC podcast: “No bare-bottom farting.”

Scientists discovered earlier in the pandemic that genetic fragments of the virus could be detected in sewage. In the UK, officials ramped up a programme to analyse wastewater for early signs of coronavirus in May, and the programme now covers two-thirds of England’s population.

It has helped with the detection of local outbreaks or the presence of variants of concern, which can be linked to specific communities via the sewage treatment network, and Dr Jenny Harries, the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, described it as “an additional detection system” for Covid.

In the face of missed vaccination targets and a rise in COVID-19 infections, the Biden administration and its mainstream media counterparts have selected their scapegoat for the continuation of the pandemic — vaccine-refusing Republicans.

“Joe Biden is done coddling conservatives and their anti-vaccine bulls**t,” the headline of a recent Vanity Fair article blared.

That article had riffed off a report from Politico that stated: “The Biden administration is casting conservative opponents of its COVID-19 vaccine campaign as dangerous and extreme, adopting a more aggressive political posture in an attempt to maneuver through the public health conundrum.”

Still another report from the Intelligencer stated, “The willfully unvaccinated are the newest Republican martyrs.”

  11. NYT – Biden Officials Now Expect Vulnerable Americans to Need Booster Shots

The growing consensus that at least some Americans will need a booster is partly tied to research suggesting that Pfizer’s vaccine is less effective after about six months.

WASHINGTON — Biden administration health officials increasingly think that vulnerable populations will need booster shots even as research continues into how long the coronavirus vaccines remain effective.

Senior officials now say they expect that people who are 65 and older or who have compromised immune systems will most likely need a third shot from Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, two vaccines based on the same technology that have been used to inoculate the vast majority of Americans thus far. That is a sharp shift from just a few weeks ago, when the administration said it thought there was not enough evidence to back boosters yet.

On Thursday, a key official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the agency is exploring options to give patients with compromised immune systems third doses even before regulators broaden the emergency use authorization for coronavirus vaccines, a step that could come soon for the Pfizer vaccine.

Dr. Amanda Cohn, the chief medical officer of the C.D.C.’s immunizations division, told an advisory committee to the agency that officials were “actively looking into ways” to provide certain people access to booster shots “earlier than any potential change in regulatory decisions.”

    “So stay tuned,” she added.

The growing consensuswithin the administration that at least some Americans will need a booster is tied in part to research suggesting that the Pfizer vaccine is less effective against the coronavirus after about six months. More than half of those fully vaccinated in the United States so far have received Pfizer’s vaccine, in two doses administered three weeks apart.

Pfizer’s continuing global study of its clinical trial participants shows that four to six months after the second dose, the vaccine’s effectiveness against symptomatic infection drops from a high of 95 percent to 84 percent, according to the company.

Data from the Israeli government, which has fully vaccinated more than half of its population with Pfizer doses since January, also points to a downward trend in effectiveness over time, although administration officials are viewing that data cautiously because of wide margins for error.

The most recent figures from the Israeli Ministry of Health, released late this week, suggested that Pfizer’s vaccine was just 39 percent effective in preventing infection in that country in late June and early July, compared to 95 percent from January to April.

The vaccine remained more than 90 percent effective in preventing severe disease, and nearly as effective in preventing hospitalization. Israel began offering a third Pfizer dose to citizens with severely weakened immune systems on July 12.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, who heads the infectious disease division of the National Institutes of Health, said he was surprised by the apparent steep falloff in the Pfizer vaccine’s effectiveness that the Israeli data seems to suggest. He said he wanted to compare it with data that the C.D.C. had been gathering from cohorts of thousands of people across the United States. “People are sort of raising their eyebrows a bit,” he said.

While other questions abound, senior administration officials said it appeared increasingly clear that the vaccines would not grant indefinite immunity against the virus, and that boosters might be necessary for at least some people perhaps nine months after their first shot. The administration has already purchased more than enough vaccine to deliver third doses of both Pfizer and Moderna, and has been quietly preparing to expand the distribution effort, should it become necessary.

With so little data yet public, many health officials and experts have spoken cautiously about booster shots. Dr. Paul A. Offit, a member of the Food and Drug Administration’s outside advisory committee of vaccine experts, said a rise in mild or moderate cases of Covid-19 among vaccinated people did not necessarily mean a booster was required.

“The goal of this vaccine is not to prevent mild or low, moderate infectious disease,” he said. “The goal is to prevent hospitalization to death. Right now this vaccine has held up to that.”

Gov. Abbott Just Signed The “Trigger Bill” – Texas Just Put Supreme Court In A Difficult Position

In 2021, there are several hot topics of debate. This includes election integrity, the southern border situation, the Second Amendment, and the ongoing “woke” agenda.

But we’ve also seen rising interest in the Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice battle. Both sides are becoming more vocal, and we could soon see some historical rulings on the subject.

However, one state vows to uphold its principles, no matter what the Supreme Court says.

For years, Texas has been a pretty solid Pro-Life state. Having a mostly Republican contingency in office, it’s no surprise that their policies would lean toward protecting the unborn children.

And current Governor Greg Abbott wants to keep it that way.

Abbott just signed the “trigger bill” and despite its title, it doesn’t involve the Second Amendment. Instead, it focuses on the legendary Roe v. Wade decision, which might be hanging in the balance.

It’s simple: if the Supreme Court decides to reverse Roe v. Wade, this will “trigger” Texas to take action.

It’s called the “Human Life Protection Act of 2021” and it will immediately ban abortion given one of the three following circumstances (via The Daily Wire):

Black Lives Matter activists blamed the U.S. government, not the Castro regime, for the anti-regime protests that have rocked Cuba.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation accused the United States of having instituted an economic embargo “with the explicit intention of destabilizing the country and undermining Cubans’ right to choose their own government,” a move the foundation said was “at the heart of the crisis.” The group praised Cuba’s “strong medical care” and implied that American policy was linked to racial animus.

“The U.S. government has only instigated suffering for the country’s 11 million – of which 4 million are Black and Brown,” the foundation said in an Instagram post.

The statement echoes rhetoric from Cuban president and Communist Party first secretary Miguel Díaz-Canel, who blamed the United States for the protests even as his government shut off the internet, deployed anti-riot squads, and began arresting artists who attempted to get on television.

President Joe Biden is being ripped by Republicans for telling a restaurant owner to pay his employees more money or they’ll leave for other jobs.

In a town hall on CNN Wednesday night, John Lanni, an owner and co-founder of a restaurant group, told Biden that many restaurateurs are having trouble finding workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biden’s response drew criticism from Republicans. “Watch: Joe Biden scolds a struggling small business owner to pay more to find workers,” RNC Research said in a post on Twitter. Ohio Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance also blasted Biden, saying his “response is a joke.”

Lanni was introduced by CNN moderator Don Lemon. Here’s the full exchange, according to the official White House transcript:

  18. Law banning handgun sales to Americans under 21 violates Second Amendment, court rules
    3-4 minutes

WASHINGTON – A federal appeals court has ruled that prohibitions on selling handguns to Americans under 21 violates the Second Amendment, the latest legal victory for gun rights advocates in federal court.

At issue is a gun control law signed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 that banned the sale of handguns to people under 21 years old but permitted the sale of shotguns and rifles to those same people.

A divided U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond, Virginia, said Tuesday that the law was an arbitrary restriction that relegated 18- to 20-year-olds to a second-class status under the Second Amendment. The decision is likely to be appealed and may eventually reach the Supreme Court.

  19. People jabbed with PLACEBOS during vaccine trials will have same privileges as those who are ‘fully’ vaxxed, UK minister says

The UK government views people who were given placebos during Covid-19 vaccine trials as fully inoculated, Britain’s vaccines minister has said, adding that they would enjoy all the privileges granted by the NHS Covid Pass.

In remarks given before Parliament on Thursday, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi touted the country’s controversial NHS Covid Pass as having an “important role to play in slowing the spread of the virus,” and urged certain businesses and large venues to adopt the domestic health certificate in order to “keep their clients or their customers safe”. The NHS app can be used to show proof of vaccination status, negative test results or natural immunity.

But it seems the urgent need to methodically document people’s vaccination status, and use this private medical information to grant certain privileges, contains at least one loophole: individuals who have participated in vaccine trials will be viewed as “fully vaccinated” whether they received a placebo or an actual shot, Zahawi said.

It’s unlikely that he misspoke, as he made the same declaration in two separate exchanges while answering questions from Parliament

Labour MP Rupa Huq complained to Zahawi that several of her constituents who took part in Novavax trials are “now being treated as if they are vax deniers with the texts they get from the NHS”. She also seemed to suggest they had been “grounded” due to not being considered fully vaccinated. She pointed to the case of an American who had participated in the drug trial who said he felt it was on account of “xenophobia” that he could not access events that Brits can.

“People think that they are being punished for doing the right thing. Will the Minister rectify that?” she pressed Zahawi.

According to the official transcript of their conversation, Zahawi promised the MP that those in clinical trials, including that by Novavax, would have their status on the NHS Covid app recorded as ‘fully vaccinated’, whether they received the placebo or the vaccine.

Minutes later, Labour MP Barbara Keeley echoed Huq’s concerns and asked for a solution to be found for the “wonderful volunteers” who had joined the Novavax trial.

“They now find themselves not able to travel, as they cannot get a vaccine certificate and their vaccines are not recognised in the EU,” the lawmaker said.

Zahawi repeated his previous position on the matter.

“We are working with other countries to make sure that that is recognised, but as far as the UK is concerned, they will be considered fully vaccinated, whether they have had the placebo or the vaccine,” he reassured the MP

The vaccine developed by US-based Novavax has yet to receive emergency use authorisation in the United Kingdom. Participants in trials for the drug have complained that they have been denied an approved jab due to their involvement with the clinical tests. The Department of Health said in June that it would ensure that the volunteers weren’t disadvantaged by their participation in the trials.

Britain’s rollout of the domestic digital Covid passport has aggravated many, who see the scheme as a serious government intrusion into peoples’ ability to carry out their normal activities. Notably, Zahawi described the divisive policy as “discriminatory” while speaking about the concept in February. However, he later changed his tune. In April, he insisted that vaccine passports wouldn’t be discriminatory if they could also be used by people who had tested negative for the virus.

  21. Israel Prime Minister ups the pressure on the unjabbed people.

… “Dear citizens, those who refuse vaccines are endangering their health, those around them and the freedom of every Israeli citizen.
They are endangering our freedom to work, the freedom of our children to learn and the freedom to hold celebrations with the family.

Those who refuse vaccines hurt us all because if all of us were vaccinated, we would all be able to maintain daily life.
But if one million Israelis continue to not get vaccinated, this will oblige the eight million others to shut themselves in their homes.

Therefore, the [Corona] Cabinet decided today that as of 8 August, those who refuse vaccines will not be able to go to the cinema, the theater, the synagogue, the amusement park, the soccer game or any activity with over 100 people, indoors or out, unless they bring negative results from a coronavirus test, at their expense.
Yes, they will fully bear the costs of the test.
There is no reason why the taxpayers and people who have carried out their civic duty and have been vaccinated should finance tests for those who refuse to get vaccinated.

Regarding flights, people who have been vaccinated will be able to fly to the clean countries and return; after they receive negative test results in Israel, they will be exempt from quarantine.

But on the other hand, those who refuse to get vaccinated will enter quarantine for a week, no matter what country they will have returned from.
These actions will help us block the morbidity. From here, I appeal to everyone who knows someone who refuses to get vaccinated:
Persuade them. Explain to them that they will not hurt others.

[…] When two people wear masks, with all of the viral load that we mentioned, the likelihood goes down by 98%.
Therefore, every citizen must wear a mask in closed spaces.
This is not a recommendation, this is a legal requirement.”

Will be interesting as it is not legally a vaccine, nor accepted by the USA FDA as a certified vaccine, but loosely worded as an “EUA” which means what?

Will be interesting see if challenges arise in the Israeli courts.

I thought Israel was way ahead in the “jab stakes”, so really what is the problem, to all the other jabbed ones.
Something seems to be seriously wrong with the jabbed, more prone to infection? a worse illness?
Covid can not be correctly tested & tracked as the jabbed ones are shedding?
