Reader’s Links for July 19, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Last week I was food shopping. At the checkout counter, I don’t put my purchases on the rolling carpet because I bag them outside at my car.

So, I hand the product to the clerk to scan and he gives it back to me. A very fast and efficient way to get through the checkout and get the damn mask off.

This time around, I had a small cart so I was able to hand the items to the clerk while verifying the screen where your bill adds up.

I accidentally backed into the cart of the woman preceding me, my back to her. She screamed at me so loud, in terror, to keep my distance. Everybody was stunned.

I turned around and saw her and replied “You think I’m going to kill you?” – By now, everybody is double-stunned.

    M. The leftist rot now runs deep

A large-scale and widely-noted survey, “The Conversion of Europeans to the Values of the Right,” suggests that Western Europe is trending conservative. But a close look at the survey data finds that not to be the case.

In other words, the “values of the Right” mentioned in the Fondapol survey represent but an attenuated version of what a true conservative understands by the phrase. The survey focuses on economics, specifically on the extent and role of the state. It barely involves traditional values, education, individual responsibility, national independence, free markets, a single law for all, the nuclear family, criminal punishment, and freedom of speech and religion; much less do they include such culture-war topics as racism, affirmative action, income inequality, climate change, cancel culture, abortion, homosexual marriage, or trans-sexuality.

It is only among the Western European political parties deemed “far-right” that one finds even a semblance of true conservatism, such as those above. These parties, however, are delegitimized and insulted, limiting their appeal while simultaneously attracting fringe elements to them.

From this larger perspective, Western Europeans are not in the least turning to the “values of the right” but are ever-more distant from them. Fondapol has it exactly wrong: except in economics, the values of the Left are preponderant and growing, exactly as it seems to us on the outside.

China Preparing to Expropriate Foreign-Held Tech Shares
    by Gordon G. Chang
    M. How unexpected! The problem now is not China purely but the dishonest western politicians who, eager to have such control over their populations, while not allowed (yet!) to trample over all rights, are using parallel dishonesty hidden behind major criminal scams to gain similar control.

VIEs, as they are known, evade Chinese law, which prohibits foreign ownership of Chinese tech companies. Through a series of intricate contractual arrangements, however, these structures effectively give foreigners the economic benefits of ownership.

People believe that if Beijing were to publicly declare a VIE illegal—in other words, expropriate foreign ownership—it would be like setting off a nuclear weapon, shutting off new Chinese companies from foreign equity markets. Therefore, they believe it could not happen. The last-minute cancellation of the Ant Group IPO in Hong Kong and Shanghai last November, however, shows that Xi Jinping is willing to go to great lengths to protect his system.

China’s brand of communism, many forget, is inherently hostile to the private sector in general and foreigners in particular. The so-called “reform era”—the three decades following 1978 when Chinese leaders liberalized the Chinese economy and financial system and opened it to the world—is now over….

Xi Jinping believes there is already too much foreign influence in Chinese society, meaning that he would like to limit to the greatest extent possible offshore ownership of China’s enterprises. He will, I think, step up a long-running campaign to harass foreign businesses and begin to force offshore investors out of his country. The questionable VIE structure gives Xi the perfect excuse to now expropriate foreign ownership of his country’s successful tech businesses.

China’s ruler, foreign investors often forget, is willful and will do what he wants. “What Xi Jinping says, Xi Jinping does,” Bartiromo correctly pointed out. “And that’s what the law is.

    • Short term gain v Long term hatred. Xi is trying to remove all of the sources or resistance to the CCP, the problem is by removing the possibility of resistance he is also removing the producers of capital that keeps the CCP in power. In the Short term Xi insures his survival, in the medium and long term he is probably insuring the destruction of the CCP.

Among the dead are four children and four women, according to a source at the Iraqi Interior Ministry.

In my previous article, we surveyed the contextually congruent point that this indicated the SMS carriers would be on the hook to do the actionable monitoring of text messages. The implication of involvement by Biden-allied groups is that those groups would advise SMS carriers of the “misinformation” to vigilant for.

  8. Jews visiting Temple Mount is not assault on al-Aqsa – analysis

The record needs to be set straight: A few hundred Jews ascending the Temple Mount on Tisha B’Av, the day commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples that stood on that mount, does not constitute “settlers storming al-Aqsa.” It constitutes Jews wanting to visit their holiest site on the fast day dedicated to remembering the Temples that once stood there, and their destruction.

Had Jews been prevented from commemorating Tisha B’Av, there would be no end to it. Israel cannot allow the threat of violence to determine its policies. Israel also has the right to expect that 1,700 Jews going to the Temple Mount not be falsely framed as an assault on al-Aqsa. Those who frame it in this manner want to ignite passions and invite violence.

To say that any Jew going up to the site on Tisha B’Av is somehow a provocation or a desecration – as claimed by Hamas, Iran, the Palestinian Authority, and Turkish President Erdogan – is not something that Israel should have to accept. The Jordanians sent an “official letter of protest,” calling on Israel to respect “the freedom of worshipers.” The call for freedom of worship at the site is particularly ironic since Jews are strictly forbidden to pray there.

Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey denounced Israel on Sunday after some 1,600 Jews visited the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City to mark the fast of Tisha B’Av, following overnight clashes at the holy site between Palestinians and police.

Early on Sunday morning, Israeli police clashed with Palestinian worshippers on the Temple Mount.

The clashes came just a few hours ahead of the pilgrimage of over 1,600 Jews to the Temple Mount to mark the fast day of Tisha B’Av, which mourns the destruction of the two Jewish Temples that once stood there.

The Temple Mount is the holiest place in Judaism, as the site of the two biblical Temples.

As more than 100,000 people marched around France against government vaccine rules on Saturday, some demonstrators wore yellow stars recalling the ones the Nazis forced Jews to wear. US and allies blame China’s spy agency for ‘really eye-opening’ cyberattacks
by Joel Gehrke, Foreign Affairs Reporter |

Cyberattackers linked to a Chinese spy agency conducted a major ransomware attack against an American company, adding a new layer of complexity to a threat usually attributed to Russia, according to President Joe Biden’s administration.

“This was surprising to us,” a senior administration official acknowledged in a media briefing Sunday on how China’s Ministry of State Security has emerged as a major cybersecurity threat. “And, in fact, one of the reasons that we’ve put so much work into this attribution is because it really gave us new insights on the MSS’s work and on the kind of aggressive behavior that we’re seeing coming out of China.”

China is also responsible for the Microsoft Exchange hack, detected in March, that affected “tens of thousands of computers around the world,” according to the official.

A Florida man who was the first to be sentenced for a felony in connection to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol will serve eight months behind bars, a judge announced Monday.

The eight-month sentence was less than the 18 months prosecutors sought for Paul Allard Hodgkins, 38, of Tampa, Fla., who pleaded guilty last month to one count of obstructing an official proceeding.

In reading his decision, U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss cited Hodgkins’ “sincere” statements in court earlier Monday morning, his lack of a previous criminal record, and lack of any leadership role in the mob that stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6.

Officials in a Pennsylvania county say a state senator may not have the legal power to compel it to provide election-related materials such as forensic images of ballot tabulators and voter information.

Commissioners in York County, in a recent letter obtained by The Epoch Times, told Pennsylvania Sen. Doug Mastriano, a Republican, that the panel he chairs, the Senate Intergovernmental Operations Committee may lack jurisdiction of elections oversight.

Mastriano triggered a forensic investigation of the 2020 election in York, Tioga, and Philadelphia counties on July 7, requesting reams of information from county officials.

Treating burns, wounds, and scars presents both psychological and physical hindrances. This treatment also becomes complex, costly, and can deprive a patient of the use of that limb or area. Yet one biotech company, Nanomedic Technologies, has engineered an artificial skin that is 3D-printed, is affixed directly onto a patient’s skin, and after 24-48 hours allows patients to use that area as they normally would, explained Gary Sagiv, VP of Marketing & Sales at Nanomedic.

“We have leveraged our electrospinning technology to develop a commercialized franchise handheld device for wound care that prints a nanofiber matrix directly onto a patient’s wound, via 3D printing, and treats three specific areas, primarily burns, trauma, and wound care,” Sagiv said, adding: “People quip our technology is reminiscent of Spiderman.”

  22. bbc – Katie Hopkins deported from Australia over quarantine rules

Far-right British commentator Katie Hopkins has been sent home from Australia for bragging about flouting hotel quarantine rules.

Ms Hopkins – who has often drawn anger for racist remarks – had entered the country to star in the reality TV show Big Brother Australia.

On Friday she posted a video from her Sydney hotel room where she joked about putting frontline staff at risk.

    Her comments sparked widespread anger.

In the video, Ms Hopkins said she planned to “lie in wait” for workers to deliver food to her room so she could open the door “naked with no face mask”.

She also called lockdowns the “greatest hoax in human history”. Australia’s two biggest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, are both in lockdown after local cases of Covid-19 were detected.

The post has since been wiped from her Instagram.

On Monday, the Australian government confirmed it had cancelled her visa, after the TV programme sacked her.

Police said she had been fined A$1,000 (£537; US$737) for not wearing a face mask, and was escorted to the airport to be sent back to the UK.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews called Ms Hopkins’ comments “appalling” and a “slap in the face” for Australians in lockdown.

“Personally, I’m very pleased she’ll be leaving,” she told broadcaster ABC.

Ms Hopkins has not commented on her deportation, but on Sunday said she had been “joking” in the video.

The controversial commentator was banned from Twitter last year for breaching its policy on hateful conduct.

Ms Hopkins, a favourite of ex-US President Donald Trump, has called migrants “cockroaches” and described Islam as “repugnant”.

Ms Andrews said the decision to allow Ms Hopkins to enter the country had been made by the New South Wales state government “on the basis of potential benefit to the economy”.

But opponents accused the national government of “allowing a far-right troll into Australia”. Ms Hopkins was also detained in South Africa in 2018 for spreading racial hate.

“The decision… is particularly painful for the 35,000 Australians who remain stranded overseas,” said Labor MP Andrew Giles.

Australia closed its borders in March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, preventing many citizens outside the country from returning. The policy has prolonged family separations.

But dozens of celebrities, sports stars and others with exemptions have been able to bypass the rule.
