Reader’s Links for June 20, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

SINGAPORE—Chinese officials are drawing up plans to further loosen birth restrictions and transition toward policies that explicitly encourage childbirth, according to people familiar with the matter, reflecting increased urgency in Beijing as economic growth slows and China’s population mix skews older.

Policy makers are discussing the possibility of fully doing away with birth restrictions by 2025, the end of the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s current five-year economic plan, according to one of the people. According to that person, China will likely begin by eliminating birth restrictions in provinces where the birthrate is the lowest before enacting nationwide changes.

Fury as New York prosecutors DROP looting charges against HUNDREDS arrested during riots last summer – with Manhattan DA ‘too busy building his case against Trump’

Business owners and residents in New York City are expressing fury at the revelation that prosecutors have dropped looing and rioting charges against hundreds arrested during chaos that swept the city last summer.

After 603 were arrested in Manhattan and the Bronx during the most intense days of looting last June, 295 of the cases have been dropped completely, according to NYPD data reported by WNBC-TV on Friday.

Now Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr and Bronx DA Darcel D. Clark are facing tough questions about why hundreds walked free after the looting rampage caused an estimated tens of millions in damages.

Business owner Jessica Betancourt, whose Bronx eyeglasses shop was destroyed last summer, vented her outrage at the situation.

‘Those numbers, to be honest with you, is disgusting,’ she told the NBC affiliate. ‘They could do it again because they know they won’t get the right punishment.’

    Morgan Phillips
    3 minutes

The White House seems unlikely to meet its goal of having 70% of Americans with at least one COVID-19 vaccine by July 4, so President Biden is shifting focus onto a new milestone while also warning those who haven’t received their shot of spreading variants.

“So many people have already been vaccinated, but the Delta variant can cause more people to die in areas where people have not been vaccinated,” Biden said Friday in remarks on the pandemic.

As of Friday, around 65.1% of people in the U.S. have received at least one COVID shot, and that number has increased by less than one percent over the past two weeks. Fifteen states and Washington, D.C. have vaccinated 70% of their residents. Fifty-five percent of Americans are fully vaccinated.

    4-5 minutes

The notoriously violent Jalisco cartel has responded to Mexico’s “hugs, not bullets” policy with a policy of its own: The cartel kidnapped several members of an elite police force in the state of Guanajuato, tortured them to obtain names and addresses of fellow officers and is now hunting down and killing police at their homes, on their days off, in front of their families.

It is a type of direct attack on officers seldom seen outside of the most gang-plagued nations of Central America and poses the most direct challenge yet to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador s policy of avoiding violence and rejecting any war on the cartels.

But the cartel has already declared war on the government, aiming to eradicate an elite state force known as the Tactical Group which the gang accuses of treating its members unfairly.

“If you want war, you’ll get a war. We have already shown that we know where you are. We are coming for all of you,” reads a professionally printed banner signed by the cartel and hung on a building in Guanajuato in May.

    • global news – How can Canada overcome its COVID-19 vaccination plateau?

One-fifth of eligible Canadians are now fully vaccinated for COVID-19, paving a path out of pandemic restrictions.

Some provinces are using mobile vaccine clinics as a tool to reach underserviced areas or hesitant populations.

A race is still underway to get people fully vaccinated as the highly transmissible Delta variant continues to spread.

As Mike Drolet explains, epidemiologists now say a 90 per cent vaccination rate is likely needed for herd immunity.

Since June 15, the date on which the elderly were eligible to get vaccinated, there have been more than 60 post-vaccination deaths. Whether they were a direct result of the COVID vaccine remains to be investigated. But the news was enough for many people put off getting vaccinated.

Imagine yourself sitting at a poker table with one opponent who fingers his dwindling stack of chips while glowering at you and daring you to bump the pot. Meanwhile, your other opponent with more chips sits quietly behind his cards while his paid spies behind your chair signal him the contents of your hand.

A national poll this spring showed a sharp divide between Democrats and Republicans over whether Russia or China is America’s greatest international adversary. Democrats, perhaps still seething from Russia’s clumsy efforts to sway the 2016 election to Donald Trump, see Vladimir Putin as a Bond movie villain and master manipulator. Republicans focused on commerce, cyber-security, and Asian ascension, look at emerging China as their greatest threat.

The party split for choosing China as America’s biggest enemy was deep – 54% of Republicans chose China compared with just 14% of Democrats surveyed. Those who instead chose Russia as America’s biggest worry split as well, with 40% of Democrats pointing to Putin and the Kremlin while only 8% of Republicans did so.

At the G7 summit in Cornwall last weekend, US President Joe Biden warned his fellow-summiteers that unless something was done “China would eat our lunch.” Did Biden overegg the pudding with his colorful language or is the world ignoring the invisible chopsticks at work?

In a sense China, as the biggest trading partner of almost all the G7 members, is already eating part of their lunch while it is clear that without Western investment, technology and, of course, markets, China might have remained hungry and stuck between the madness of Maoism and the inertia of Ah-Quism.

Biden, of all people, should know all that. For it was during the Obama administration in which Biden was part of the décor that the “Asia-Pacific” cliché was launched as the principal future direction of the US global strategy. While Obama looked the other way, China militarized a string of atolls in seas around it as part of a long-term plan to forge an aggressive profile against its neighbor and the United States.

  18. zero hedge – CBC Turns Off Facebook Comments To Protect “Fragile” Journalists’ Mental Health And “Protect Free Speech”

In a move that can only be described as the pinnacle of embracing snowflake culture, the CBC has said this week it is going to close comments on all of its news links and video posts to Facebook pages to protect the mental health of its journalists.

Journalists – who used to be rugged and used to deal with varying opinions as part of the job description – are “fragile” and “in need of attention”, like many other Canadians post-pandemic, the CBC wrote last week. Increasingly, they are facing “vitriol and harassment” for doing their jobs, the report notes.

“For journalists, platforms like Twitter can be a great way to find sources and promote their work, but also a cesspool of hatred. Increasingly, reporters are also physically attacked,” Andre Picard told CBC.

Women and journalists of color have seen increased abuse, according to CBC President Catherine Tait. In her opinion, those threats pose attacks to “free speech and democracy”.

And what better way to enable free speech, than to shut down all speech?

“That’s why beginning on Wednesday and for the next month, we will close comments on all news links and video posts to the Facebook pages belonging to the journalism division of the CBC (News, Current Affairs and Local),” the CBC wrote.

    The report continues:

We have built significant audiences on social media platforms through our program and news accounts. These are vital ways to reach Canadians, and we believe in serving content to people there like we do on TV, radio, web and apps. In fact, some of our social channels boast record numbers, increasing reach and growing engagement with millions of Canadians.

But as the conversation has degraded on these platforms, we find ourselves limiting what we post there. We know certain stories will draw out obnoxious and hateful comments. The truth is we spend a considerable amount of attention and resources attempting to moderate our Facebook posts. It takes a mental toll on our staff, who must wade into the muck in an effort to keep the conversation healthy for others.

“It is not sustainable,” the report concludes. “We continue to welcome comments on our website, CBCNews.ca, where we have more moderating tools and can focus our attention better on offering a respectful dialogue about our stories.”

    =======================================================
CBC – Why CBC is turning off Facebook comments on news posts for a month

Social media attacks on our journalists and the subjects of our stories is something we take seriously

There is ample evidence the mental health of many Canadians is fragile and in need of attention after 16 months of pandemic lockdowns, school closures and economic uncertainty.

Journalists are no different. Some recent articles on the well-being of reporters tasked with covering a crisis they’re also living through have many of us looking in the mirror to take stock of our health.

Compounding the stress and anxiety of journalists is the vitriol and harassment many of them face on social media platforms and, increasingly, in the field. As André Picard wrote in a recent column, “For journalists, platforms like Twitter can be a great way to find sources and promote their work, but also a cesspool of hatred. Increasingly, reporters are also physically attacked.”

The president of CBC/Radio-Canada, Catherine Tait, has also written about the increased abuse of journalists on social media, especially women and journalists of colour, and the threat such attacks pose to free speech and democracy.

If public discourse is a litmus test of the health of a society, the conversation on social media suggests we have a problem. It’s one thing for our journalists to deal with toxicity on these platforms. It’s another for our audience members who try to engage with and discuss our journalism to encounter it on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, where they are almost guaranteed to be confronted by hate, racism and abuse.

That’s why beginning on Wednesday and for the next month, we will close comments on all news links and video posts to the Facebook pages belonging to the journalism division of the CBC (News, Current Affairs and Local).

    It is not sustainable.

    Comments remain open on CBCNews.ca
We want to see if we can use Facebook more selectively over the four-week test. Can we be more intentional? Can we reduce the harm and impact of the conversations?

Can we apply what we learn with Facebook to other third-party platforms where comments are an issue, such as Twitter or YouTube?

As a responsible public broadcaster, we must make smart strategic decisions that weigh our mandate to inform, entertain and enlighten the people of Canada against the harm from comments to our audience, staff and story subjects.

This experiment will give us the opportunity to post more stories to Facebook that cover a range of lived experiences, political thought and topics without worrying that they’ll be overwhelmed by negative comments and attacks.

The four-week test will also provide valuable data and other insight into how changing our use of Facebook comments may — or may not — impact how our stories reach you.

We continue to welcome comments on our website, CBCNews.ca, where we have more moderating tools and can focus our attention better on offering a respectful dialogue about our stories.

As always, we’ll keep you updated on our efforts to improve the CBC experience for you and for our staff.

Getting our stories and coverage to as many Canadians as possible on the platforms of their choice remains a promise of a public broadcaster like the CBC. Dealing with attacks on our people, and the subjects and principles of our stories, however, is something we take seriously.

“Defund the police” has become a popular phrase among leftist activists, gaining momentum during a rash of Black Lives Matter protests and riots last summer following the police-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020.

As news of these protests spread through the media, local governments across the country quickly started acquiescing to the demand. Cities such as New York and Los Angeles significantly cut funding for their police departments, while Minneapolis City Council went further, introducing a measure to try and outright abolish and replace its police department.

Remember what I have been saying about how the US was established to have multiple layers of government think about what the police would be like if they were reassigned to different locations on a regular basis, they wouldn’t be in any one location long enough to make long lasting friends. It would be much easier for the Left to turn the police against the people and use them to oppress us and strip the rest of our rights away from us.

Citizens fight back with lawsuits, secession from cities in quest for increased safety

One year after the movement to “defund” police saw cities slash budgets and cut funding, the U.S. has seen an uptick in crime. Homicides alone are up 24% since January and more than 70% of people in a recent Fox News Poll said they believe crime is on the rise nationally. As a result, the pendulum may be swinging back in favor of the police.

“Now some cities are refunding the police department,” FOX Business’s Stuart Varney said on Varney & Co.

Cities like New York City, Oakland, Baltimore, Minneapolis and Los Angeles are planning to reinstate tens of millions for the construction of new police precincts, increase police department budgets, among other plans to bankroll more efforts to confront the uptick in crime.

    • Things are so scary, they take my breath away.
Hezbo’s rockets are an even bigger threat than nukes. A more immediate threat that a flabby
Israeli govt coalition, bent on appeasing unreliable Western “allies”, might try to finesse:

The B-team is barely covering its “pivot” to the Twisted Ragheads and their allies, Russia and China.

J.E. Dyer, commenting as “Jennifer”, said:
“At a certain point, we have to finally acknowledge that the Left’s fixation on Iran isn’t about preventing a threat. It’s about backing one. They’re FOR radical Iran – in the same way they’re FOR the destructive forces tearing Western civilization apart.

“They do pro forma things that seem to be about countering Iranian misbehavior, because that’s a convenient place to stand and minimize alertment and speculation about their motives. But when push comes to shove, they land on Iran’s side.”
