Reader’s Links for June 5, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. “Keep eye on ball!” said President Xi. He stood relaxed off the tee, propping one hand on his driver, the other held an enormous cigar. It was a beautiful morning. The day’s heat had not yet risen with the sun. The morning dew imbued the air like perfume.

Fauci, so short that he used a child’s golf club, swung hard. The head of his wood connected–“Wack!” The ball drilled straight down the fairway.

“Excellent!” said Xi. “We call this ball President Trump.” He hauled hard on his stogie. “You go now, Bill.” Bill Gates placed his ball on the tee. He fiddled with his shoulders and stance trying to remember what he had learned at his golf class. He was not a good athlete, playing what he thought was a terribly stupid game for the social currency, only. “Wack!” A clump of dirt flew with the ball which sliced off towards the tree line on the right, but stayed out of the rough. “Very good!” said Xi. We call this ball Wuhan Flu.”

“No, Mr. President,” said Gates. “I must correct you. We call this ball ‘Vaccines.'”

“Ah. Understand. You clever man. I close three doors so flu leave China. You use flu for make medical state and big money. Good man.”

The next player stepped up to the tee. His name was Dr. Ha Ha. He was a Chinese-American virologist and microbiologist from MIT. His greying, long straggly hair made him appear out of place with this straightlaced group. He put his ball on the tee. He did not hesitate to prepare his stance as most golfers do. There was no dance at all. “Wack!” The ball went like a missile straight ahead. Oh my, said Gates. Oooh, said Xi. They watched it rise with great power then descend in the distance in-line with the green. Suddenly, then, they all at once noticed an object on the ground.

    “What that?” Xi blurted.
“It looks like someone dropped a sack or a bag on the fairway,” said Fauci. “Hard to tell from this distance.”

It was then that the golf ball driven by Dr. Ha Ha hit the bag like a bullit dead-on. In silence the men watched as a black cat shot from the bag, across the grass and into the trees at the left of the fairway.

“This ball called ‘Oh Shit,'” said President Xi.

    • Has that guy been near any US military or nuclear facilities? Cause he is to a UFO what Covid19 is to the Spanish flu. So it seems likely.

Latest attack on Asian American: Teen on bus sets woman’s hair on fire

    Image: San Francisco Police Department

The San Francisco Police Department is seeking the public’s help. Unfortunately, the department made that task infinitely harder by blurring out the face of the perpetrator pf the attack described as a “black male in his teens … last seen wearing a red, long-sleeve top with colored logo on the front, matching red pants and a black backpack,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

As the video begins, the teen can be seen moving from another seat to one behind the woman would give him easier access to the target’s hair. He then flicks a cigarette lighter and holds the flame up to her hair. After it fails to catch several times, he checks the lighter to make sure there is fluid.

  3. As we foretold, a change is on its way in China and it’s unlike anything in the past

    • Nice one Richard Thank you!

IIRC(Always a risk) in the USSR this became widespread in the late 1960s/early 1970s and snowballed into the 1980s. When factories and mines became privatized after the breakup it was found that 40-60% of workers contributed almost nothing to the business and so were dismissed. Now some or perhaps more, although I doubt it, were party members in sinecures, but when I read this several decades ago, it stated that many others had decided “if he can do so can I” and so productivity dropped. But being a totalitarian economy no one seemed to notice much or act if they did.
Perhaps this is what we are seeing now as the Chinese know how hard they must work for Xi and they are not happy and they are aware of the freedoms of even Vietnam let alone Sth Korea, Taiwan and Japan and more so they are disgusted at the blatant public behaviour of the untouchables: the children of high ranking party members and the extremely wealthy.
This is probably just a photon of hope but better than nothing.

      • It is more then a Photon of Hope, the Chinese economy is in massive trouble. I know the official figures say otherwise but they are in trouble. The Trade War Trump started hurt them, then Australia started fighting back which is hurting them more. Plus China had to spend a lot of its hard currency to buy food to replace that lost to the floods and other disasters.

Now this year sections of China are in drought conditions and others are bracing for floods that will once again destroy crops. Combine this loss of hard currencies used to buy food with the world not buying near as much from China because of their turning the Wuhan Flu loose on the world. Last year they had to sell US debt to get the money to buy food, they needed the money we pay on the debt service to provide a stable section to their income. They lost part of that and are now facing loosing more to buy more food.

China wants to take their neighbors for many reasons but one of the big ones is the expected loot from the banks and private homes. They didn’t get as much gold and other liquid assets from Hong Kong as they expected. Now they are looking at Taiwan and other nations in that region as possible cash sources. Biden is helping China in every way he can but all he is doing is prolonging their agony. China is on its way down, the question is how far will it fall and will the rest of the world follow it down.

I know I am not being as clear as I should but I have a bad sinus headache and can’t sleep to get rid of it.

        • NPs and it was lucid
Provided your blood pressure is under control, pseudoephedrine and steam inhalation are the best treatments for such(“flavouring” of the steam is optional :)). Antihistamines only work if it is allergy related. If your are cold you must also cover your head. Most such headaches are rarely a function of allergy but of cold and especially air conditioning. In work areas I found that the most menopausal woman always controls the A/C temperature and will happily lie about so doing.

Facebook interferes with 2022 election by extending Trump’s suspension

Facebook announced Friday that former President Donald Trump’s accounts will be suspended for two years, freezing his presence on the social network until early 2023, following a finding that Trump stoked violence ahead of the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

At the end of the suspension, the company will assess whether Trump’s “risk to public safety” has subsided, Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, wrote in a blog post. He said Facebook will take into account “external factors” such as instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly and other markers of civil unrest.

Facebook also announced that it would end a contentious policy that automatically exempted politicians from rules banning hate speech and abuse, and that it would stiffen penalties for public figures during times of civil unrest and violence.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge has overturned California’s three-decade-old ban on assault weapons, ruling that it violates the constitutional right to bear arms.

U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego (a Bush appointee) ruled Friday that the state’s definition of illegal military-style rifles unlawfully deprives law-abiding Californians of weapons commonly allowed in most other states.

ALBUQUERQUE — A raucous group of protesters yelling and screaming into bullhorns outside the Albuquerque Museum’s outdoor amphitheater disrupted Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s formal announcement Thursday that she’s running for a second term in 2022, forcing the governor to cut her speech short and the event to end early.

Lujan Grisham, who took the stage to chants of “MLG!” from her supporters, immediately made light of the situation.

“I know it’s going to be loud, and I just have to say I’m sorry that we picked the same location that the QAnon lizard people meeting was at,” she said, laughing.

“In spite of that,” she said, referring to the boisterous crowd of protesters, “I’m running for reelection for another four years. … We’re going to do what we do best. We’re going to protect New Mexico and no amount of noise will deter, intimidate or create a vacuum in leadership that makes a difference for every single New Mexican this day and every day. Doctors, healthcare workers sound the alarm over health risks of climate change

A growing number of doctors and front-line healthcare workers are turning to climate activism to urge global leaders to declare climate change a public health emergency.

Doctors and health workers, some clad in white coats and brandishing placards, marched to the headquarters of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva on Saturday to demand that health authorities and governments prioritise climate change to avert a global health crisis.

Their demands for immediate action included a focus on preventative healthcare with education programmes in schools and the wider community, more equitable distribution and access to medical care, reducing the carbon impact of health care, and stricter control of industries to ensure clean water and air.

  19. Bald Eagles Attack Idaho Farm, Kill 54 Sheep: Report
    Charlotte Pence Bond
    4 minutes

A pair of bald eagles are reportedly attacking a flock of sheep on an Idaho farm and have so far killed 54 animals.

Local outlet Magic Valley reported that Rocky Matthews, the owner of a farm near Murtaugh Lake in Idaho, originally thought someone was killing his lambs with a pellet gun after he discovered the dead animals. “The animals all had puncture wounds the circumference of a No. 2 pencil,” the outlet reported.

Once he witnessed an eagle go after the flock, he understood better what was responsible for the deaths. A large eagle nest has been on his property for over 20 years, but the birds have never had an effect on his farming process. As of right now, the nest provides a home to two adults and at least two baby eaglets.

“They’ve never crossed paths till this year,” he said. “The damage under the hide is a hundredfold from what you see on the exterior.”v

  22. reuters – India to Twitter: Comply with IT rules or face ‘unintended consequences’

India has told Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) it has one last chance to comply with new IT rules, or face “unintended consequences” according to a copy of an official letter seen by Reuters.

The new rules – which were announced in February and which became effective at the end of last month – are aimed at regulating content on social media and making firms such as Facebook (FB.O), its WhatsApp messenger and Twitter more accountable to legal requests.

They also require big social media companies to set up grievance redressal mechanisms and appoint new executives to coordinate with law enforcement.

India’s technology ministry wrote to Twitter on May 26 and May 28 on the new rules, but the company’s responses “neither address the clarifications sought by this ministry nor indicate full compliance with the Rules,” said the June 5 letter from the technology ministry to Twitter deputy general counsel Jim Baker.

The letter, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, said that among other things, Twitter had yet to inform the ministry about its chief compliance officer, and its grievance officer and nodal contact person were not employees as mandated by rules.

It said such non-compliance would lead to “unintended consequences” including the possibility that Twitter could be held accountable for content posted on it, an exemption it currently largely enjoys.

It added, “However, as gesture of goodwill, Twitter Inc is hereby given one last notice to immediately comply with the Rules.”

The technology ministry did not respond to a request for comment. Twitter declined to comment.

The new IT rules have spurred legal battles, including a lawsuit filed by Facebook-owned WhatsApp that accuses the government of exceeding its legal powers by enacting rules that will force the messaging app to break end-to-end encryption.

    • Twitter SUSPENDS progressive feminist author Naomi Wolf after slew of tweets opposing Covid-19 vaccinations

Naomi Wolf, a feminist author and former campaign adviser to then-president Bill Clinton who became an ardent critic of lockdowns and vaccines during the pandemic, has been banned from Twitter.
Wolf – who had nearly 150,000 followers – was suspended from Twitter on Friday evening following her repeated commentary against Covid-19 vaccinations.

Though it’s not clear exactly which post led to Wolf’s suspension, the author had a history of making anti-vaccine comments and had published several on the day of her ban.

Opponents of Wolf’s rhetoric, including liberal journalist Thor Benson, had lobbied Twitter for her suspension shortly beforehand, complaining that the author was still allowed to tweet despite her anti-vaxx comments being seemingly against the social network’s rules.

Many users celebrated Wolf’s ban, calling her a “nutty anti-vaxxer” and hers “one of the most damaging accounts spreading disinformation on Twitter.” Journalist Will Black even thanked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for the move, writing, “She’s dangerous and should not return.”

Some, however, condemned the ban, calling it censorship and pointing out that others who’d spread conspiracy theories on the platform had not faced the same sanction.

“I dislike her but I dislike censorship more,” said one Twitter user, while journalist Glenn Greenwald argued, “I think a lot of people who constantly disseminate false claims and unhinged and dangerous conspiracy theories – such as MNSBC and CNN hosts – should nonetheless be allowed to remain on Silicon Valley monopolistic social media platforms.”

Last year, during the pandemic, Twitter expanded its rules to prohibit “false or misleading narratives about Covid-19 vaccinations,” including claims that they’re used to “cause harm to or control populations,” false information about “adverse impacts or effects of receiving vaccinations,” and claims that “vaccinations are unnecessary.”

Several of Wolf’s much-discussed tweets apparently fell into one of those categories. The author has long been the target of the self-professed fighters against vaccine disinformation, and was once tricked by a reporter with the Intercept into posting a fake vaccine-skeptic meme with a porn star presented as a doctor.

Wolf, who describes herself as “a lifelong progressive,” became a pariah among her supporters after taking the staunch anti-vaccine stance and speaking out against strict lockdown measures – which she’s compared to “fascism” – and has even been accused of holding views that align with those of the far right.

    • Is Fauci a fall guy?

Sundance of The Last Refuge looks into something that also puzzled me: why were multiple FOIA requests for the emails of Dr. Anthony Fauci all released at the same time, and why now?

Using his time-tested technique of constructing timelines and comparing the current FOIA release with another key FOIA release, he constructs a thought-provoking theory.

As so often in the past, he sees a tacit plot behind the events that capture so much attention.

He constructs this sequence of recent events:

      – A once beloved Bill Gates, the primary advocate for COVID vaccines, suddenly became a target by the political left. It was quite a shift.
      – The White House announces their support of investigation into the origin of COVID-19.
Media report on State Dept investigators who were handcuffed during their research into the COVID origination.
      – Suddenly discussion of the “Lab Leak Theory” was permitted by those who control the platforms of speech.
      – Media then report of Anthony Fauci gaining a lucrative book deal.
      – Joe Biden gives a speech in Oklahoma on Tuesday; and immediately thereafter the White House announces no more public appearances for the remainder of the week.
      – The Fauci emails are released under the auspices of a FOIA fulfillment.

He asks: “Why would the Deep State release these emails, instead of just hiding them?”

Then he draws a comparison with another FOIA release, that of the FISA application for surveillance of Carter Page, released on July 23, 2018. This was the first time in history that a top secret FISA application had ever been released, and

few people paused to ask why this “Top Secret” Title-1 Search and surveillance authorization document was released in the first place? Requesting the public release of such a top secret document would have been the easiest FOIA request to deny… but the DOJ choose to release it.

He supplies an explanation for the release:

[T]he motive to hide/bury the much larger issue of President Obama’s administration using the Intelligence Community to conduct surveillance on their political opponents. (snip)

Everyone was excited to read and discuss the content of the FISA application and exhaust thousands of column inches on the discussion as people took sides based on the DOJ/FBI justification for the FISA itself.

The Weissmann release had the intended effect… people stopped debating whether President Obama was conducting political surveillance on behalf of Hillary Clinton and their political alignment. THAT debate was a much bigger issue that just disappeared with the emergence of the FISA application.

Similarly, in the current FOIA releases:

Perhaps the bigger story is the creation of the virus; perhaps the bigger story is an intentional release of a manufactured virus; or perhaps the bigger story is the manipulation of the virus — the creation of a fraudulent narrative — to achieve political goals. Against the backdrop of “never letting a crisis go to waste”, the latter seems much more likely.

Those political goals pre-eminently included driving President Trump to defeat in the 2020 election, and he lists the ways in which the virus was manipulated to enable a series of moves that accomplished that goal.

      Recall that very early on:

On February 25, 2020, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, former DOJ Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s sister, who was director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (link) held a conference call with reporters. Messonnier’s remarks were rogue and not approved by HHS secretary Alex Azar. Messonnier’s remarks were made without authorization from anyone in the White House:

“We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare for the expectation that this could be bad.” … “I understand this whole situation may seem overwhelming and that disruption to everyday life may be severe. But these are things that people need to start thinking about now.” (link)

The alarming message from Dr. Messonnier was quickly picked up by most major news organizations and pushed into all reporting on the issue. The COVID panic had begun.

While the attack weapons were previously being put into position it was Messonnier’s alarm that triggered the first wave of political confrontation against the Trump administration. The narrative was triggered. The alarms were sounded. The crisis was officially being exploited and COVID was now fully weaponized to eliminate the Presidency of Donald Trump.

Having begun the panic narrative, that COVID-19 — with a mortality rate under 1% — was the worst pandemic ever, fanned by the media, the way was cleared for:

      – The stalling of a fantastic economy that was benefiting every American voter.

      – Deployment of mail-in ballots that can be used and manipulated to achieve fraudulent results.

      – Controls over presidential debates to avoid a weak candidate being exposed or confronted.

      – The deployed “excuse” for a very visible lack of voter enthusiasm for the puppet (Biden).

In Sundance’s view, Fauci is being offered up as a distraction from the larger story that a fairly bad annual flu was weaponized as a means of taking down the re-election of Donald Trump, whose term up until the lockdown was a story of tremendous economic growth and diplomatic triumphs in the Middle East, making his re-election very probable. The expression “fall guy” is not used by Sundance, but I think it applies, in that the focus on Fauci diverts blame from other parties.

I am not 100% convinced he’s correct but find the theory worth considering.

It drew a diverse group of people, including young parents with their children (none wearing masks), 5G conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers, motorcycle gang members and right-wing extremists.

Chanting “liberté, liberté, liberté,” several thousand protesters marched north on St-Laurent Blvd. on Saturday afternoon to denounce public health restrictions during the pandemic.

Few, if any, of the protesters wore masks, and many carried signs accusing Quebec Premier François Legault of imposing draconian measures during the pandemic even as the government is now easing restrictions amid falling COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

“There is no pandemic,” Frank, a military veteran and one of the organizers of the protest, said in a brief interview during the march.

Frank, who was decked out in military fatigues and who didn’t want his last name published, said he was providing security for the march.

The protest, organized under the motto of “my body, my choice,” drew a diverse group of people, including young parents with their children (none wearing masks), 5G conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers, motorcycle gang members and right-wing extremists.

The march ended with a rally at Jarry Park just before 6 p.m. Sgt.

Emmanuel Anglade, a spokesperson for the Montreal police department, said no arrests were made during the protest.

    • Australia: Police deployed in Melbourne to foil protests at vaccination hubs

Heavy police presence foiled planned protests at Melbourne vaccination hubs, as filmed on Saturday.

Local residents were seen waiting in line to get their jabs as the centres continued their work.

“I do think that the lockdown is warranted. I’m a little bit upset that they didn’t do it a little bit earlier, I felt as thought they should have locked down as soon as the first cases started to come out,” said local resident Ian.

Two protesters were arrested and one was charged with criminal offences during a small anti-lockdown protest at nearby Flinders St Station.

Sixteen people were also fined for breaching COVID-19 regulations following the protest.

69 people in the state of Victoria were infected with the COVID-19 Delta variant prompting local authorities to extend the lockdown for another week.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been investigating local agencies after its North Star Fugitive Task Force killed 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith, a man they were trying to arrest. As usual, left-leaning activists came out to protest against law enforcement and get more information about the shooting.

Smith was wanted on a state arrest warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm and had been convicted of aggravated robbery in 2017. He was put on probation but failed to appear for sentencing on May 19 for firearm possession.

While task force members confronted the man, he wouldn’t surrender and even pulled out a gun. According to evidence gathered at the scene, Smith had fired his weapon from inside the car and a handgun was later recovered at the scene.

Do not be deceived by any narrative that suggests the Iran’s political system is democratic or that the people of Iran freely or fairly get to elect their president. Out of 592 individuals who registered to run as candidates in the Iranian regime’s presidential election this month, the unelected Guardian Council only approved seven individuals to run for the presidency. Iran’s presidential “elections” will be held in less than three weeks. Do not, however, be deceived by any narrative that suggests the mullahs’ system is democratic or that the people of Iran freely or fairly get to elect their president.

  26. Ohio Football Coach Forces Kosher Observant Teen to Eat Pork as Punishment

The family of a McKinley High School football player is calling for more action after it says the head coach Marcus Wattley forced the teen to eat a pizza containing pork.

The incident happened on May 24th after the junior missed practice with an injury. According to the family’s attorney, head coach Marcus Wattley made the teen sit in the middle of the gym and eat the whole pizza. If he didn’t, his surrounding teammates would have to run extra drills. The attorney said Wattley also threatened to kick the teen off the team. The 17-year-old’s faith strictly forbids eating pork or pork residue.

The boy repeatedly told the coach he did not eat pork and eventually he was allowed to pick off the pepperoni. However, grease still remained on the pizza,.

After finishing, the teen was ordered to do extra drills outside, according to the attorney.

Canton City Schools said it suspended eight members of the high school football coaching staff, including the head coach. It is conducting an investigation into the incident.

  27. AXIOS – Scoop: Bush family nonprofit’s $5 million deal with China influence group

A nonprofit affiliated with the late former President George H.W. Bush agreed to accept $5 million from a policy group at the center of China’s U.S. influence efforts, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: As tensions escalate between the U.S. and China, leaders with the George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations have sounded off for closer ties — and while criticizing Beijing in some cases, have toed China’s line on some major geopolitical issues.

Driving the news: Axios obtained a written agreement that spells out the details of a $5 million grant from the China-United States Exchange Foundation to the Bush China Foundation, established in 2017 with the former president’s blessing.

CUSEF leadership has close ties to Chinese government officials, and the group has a reputation as an arm of Bejing’s political influence operation. It provided a significant share of the funds for the Bush group’s efforts to improve Sino-American relations.

What they’re saying: Bush China Foundation spokesperson Leslie Reagan confirmed the authenticity of the agreement, but stressed that CUSEF’s funding has no effect on its policy work.

“We are proud of our partnership with CUSEF and deeply appreciative of CUSEF’s generous support,” she wrote in an emailed statement.

“(T)he Bush China Foundation has staked out a very strong independent posture on virtually all of the major issues in the U.S.-China relationship; in the process, we have frequently leveled sharp criticism of Chinese policies and actions when we believe that has been merited,” she said.

Reagan said the organization rejects suggestions that CUSEF acts as a mouthpiece for political interests in China. “Knowing CUSEF as we do, we do not buy into that narrative,” she wrote. “CUSEF has never sought to influence our editorial positions or encroach on our editorial independence.”

Details: The grant agreement, dated September 19, 2019, and signed by both parties, calls for CUSEF to donate $1 million per year to the Bush China Foundation from 2019 through 2023.

Tax filings covering May through December of 2019 show the Bush China Foundation brought in a total of under $1.2 million in contributions, meaning CUSEF’s donations would likely comprise a substantial portion of its revenue.

The funds are designed to bolster the Bush China Foundation’s efforts to promote “a bilateral relationship that is functional, constructive, commercially robust, mutually beneficial and politically sustainable,” according to the agreement

The Bush China Foundation agreed to keep CUSEF in the loop on its activities “to assure continued alignment of the two parties’ objectives.”

Background: The Hong Kong-based CUSEF is run by the city’s former chief executive, Tung Chee-Hwa. It calls itself “an independent, non-profit and non-governmental foundation.”

Tung is also the vice-chair of a Beijing-based advisory body that promotes the Chinese Communist Party’s political aims, which is chaired by a Politburo official who plays a leading role in Beijing’s “united front” global influence campaign.

CUSEF has disclosed in U.S. filings that it paid for lobbying campaigns to “influence key constituencies” in the U.S. regarding “China’s true intentions and efforts in Tibet,” including an analysis of how U.S. high school textbooks portray Tibet.

CUSEF is one of a number of Beijing-affiliated organizations “intended to spread China’s political agenda,” two Texas congressmen — Rep. Michael McCaul, a Republican who chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat — charged in a 2018 letter.

Between the lines: The Bush China Foundation’s agreement with CUSEF is careful to include language designed to head off any suggestion that it’s acting as an agent for foreign interests.

“The Bush China Foundation in no way acts under the order, request, direction or control of CUSEF,” it says. “This agreement establishes no ‘principal’/’agent’ relationship between the two parties.”

The groups “will naturally consult in good faith on matters pertaining to the work of the Bush China Foundation supported by this grant,” it says, but CUSEF has no authority or veto power over the foundation’s work.

CUSEF denies that it acts as a Beijing mouthpiece, but its ties to party leaders have drawn scrutiny from some academic institutions it’s worked with and supported financially.

Bush China Foundation president David Firestein previously led the University of Texas’ China Public Policy Center. In 2017, he proposed CUSEF funding for the center. The plan was rejected after university faculty noted the group’s Communist Party ties.

In response to Axios’ inquiry, Reagan, the Bush China Foundation spokesperson, provided a list of occasions in which Firestein has criticized the Chinese government on high-profile political issues. But the group’s leadership has echoed Beijing’s line in other areas.

Founder and chairman Neil Bush, George H.W. Bush’s third son, blamed pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong on “outside influence” in 2019 remarks at a conference organized by a division of the Chinese foreign ministry. The remarks were widely circulated by state-run media.

Some American complaints about Chinese human rights abuses, mass surveillance and foreign influence campaigns are “based on half-truths or all out fake news,” Bush said at 2019 forum in Hong Kong organized by CUSEF’s Tung.

Bush has longstanding business ties in the country. Chinese executives at a real estate investment firm he runs illegally steered $1.3 million to a super PAC supporting his brother Jeb Bush’s 2016 presidential campaign.
