Reader’s Links for April 24, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Something weird going on with the internet here in Australia 1500 HRS EST, 24/04/21.

All social media down, video, pictures and tv stations. Perhaps it is a localised event, will give an update later.

    • Please disregard, seems to be a local technical problem.

  2. An interesting interview on U.S. monetary policy. If Janet Yellen (originally a labour economist which I did not know) gets her way she may opt for helicopter money. This means that if her current trickle down monetary policies divert most money to Wall Street instead of to Joe Average (which they most certainly do), she will print money and mail it to the people or do direct deposits in order to obtain the results she wants. This will likely result in hyperinflation. She is a clueless socialist academic given too much power at a critical time, and at a time she is making more critical by her own actions:

    • Israel said probing link between Pfizer shot and heart problem in men under 30

Leaked Health Ministry probe raises concerns as 62 cases of myocarditis found out of 5 million vaccinated — most after second dose; 2 deaths, but no direct link established

Details from an unpublished Israeli Health Ministry report into the side effects of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine have raised concerns that there could be a link between the second shot and several dozen cases of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, particularly in men under 30, Channel 12 reported Friday.

The concerns come from an intermediate report that was presented to ministry heads and to Pfizer in recent weeks, the TV report said. Excerpts from the leaked report stressed that investigators had not conclusively proved a link, but that they had significant concerns.

The report said that out of more than 5 million people vaccinated in Israel, there were 62 recorded cases of myocarditis in the days after the shot. It found that 56 of those cases came after the second shot and most of the affected were men under 30.

The report said that 60 of the patients were treated and released from hospital in good condition. Two of the patients, who were reportedly healthy until receiving the vaccination, including a 22-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, died.

“The findings were presented to the Pfizer company who replied that they had not had similar reports in the rest of the world and would examine the data,” an excerpt from the report said, adding that the details had also been sent to the US FDA and CDC, who were also investigating.

The report was authored by senior ministry officials led by Prof. Dror Mevorach, head of one of the COVID-19 units at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem.

The authors surmised that “one possible reason for lack of similar findings in other countries was the low rate of vaccinations among young people.”

“There is specific concern regarding the frequency of the occurrence observed in men under 30 in the days immediately after the second shot,” they wrote. “At this stage, according to initial findings that still need to be verified, there is an impression that the number (of cases) is higher than would be expected, especially for those under 30.”

The report found that of those who received the second dose, 1-in-100,000 had possible side effects of myocarditis; however, this number rose to 1-in-20,000 among those aged 16-30.

“We cannot yet tell if there are more cases than normal or if there are similar numbers annually and the proximity is just a coincidence. Efforts to collect more data are continuing,” the report said.

“At the moment we believe that the vaccination plan should proceed as normal for those over 16. However, it should be noted that there is a possibility that we will see the same results in vaccinations of those aged 12-15,” it cautioned.

Israel is looking to press ahead with vaccinating those under 16 as soon as the shot is authorized.

On Thursday, the Jewish state passed the milestone of over 5 million people having received both vaccine shots.

According to the Health Ministry, 5,005,418 second doses have now been given, accounting for nearly 54% of the total population and more than 80% of the eligible population over the age of 16. Just under 58% — 5,374,276 — of all Israelis have had at least one shot.

The TV report came as Israel marked its first day in 10 months with no new COVID-19 daily deaths reported.

In data released Friday, the death toll remained unchanged from the day before at 6,346. The last date there were no new fatalities was June 29, 2020, when morbidity levels remained subdued following the initial coronavirus wave.

The ministry said of 35,027 tests performed Thursday, 129 new cases were recorded, a positive test rate of 0.4 percent. The country has logged 837,892 confirmed infections since the pandemic began.

The number of active infections fell further, to 1,850, with 157 patients in serious condition, including 82 on ventilators.

Israel has seen a sharp drop in daily mortality and infection rates since the pandemic peaked in late-January, as the country pushes forward with its world-leading vaccination drive.

“This is a tremendous achievement for the health system and Israeli citizens. Together we are eradicating the coronavirus,” Health Minister Yuli Edelstein tweeted Friday.

Israel’s vaccination program, which is based on the Pfizer-BioNtech two-shot vaccine, has seen it maintain the highest per capita inoculation rate in the world since it began in late December.

The country is preparing to start vaccinating children aged 12-15 as soon as the US Food and Drugs Administration approves vaccine use for children in that age bracket.

Health Ministry Director-General Chezy Levi said Thursday that once that age group has been vaccinated, the country will reach herd immunity and there will be no need to inoculate younger children, according to the Kan public broadcaster.

Also Thursday, the Health Ministry issued a travel warning to seven countries caught in a wave of virus infection, citing concerns of possible coronavirus strains that may be more resistant to vaccines.

The countries listed in the travel warning were Ukraine, Ethiopia, Brazil, South Africa, India, Mexico and Turkey.

The ministry further said all Israelis, including the vaccinated and recovered, should generally avoid any “unnecessary” international travel altogether.

The warning came as health officials express concerns over a new mutated strain detected in India, which is dealing with one of the worst outbreaks since the pandemic began in 2019.

As infections have dwindled, Israel has rolled back restrictions on public life, including lifting the requirement to wear face masks outdoors, which ended on Sunday.

    • Netherlands: AstraZeneca benefits outweigh very rare blood clots risk says EMA

The Amsterdam-based European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced on Friday that benefits of the Vaxzevria COVID-19 vaccine (formerly AstraZeneca) outweighed the risks of “very rare” blood clots with low blood platelets following vaccination. A research committee also found that the benefits of the vaccination increased with age and infection rates.

“Vaccines in all scenarios prevent hospitalisations. Prevent admission to Intensive Care Units. Prevent deaths. Those benefits increase with age, those benefits increase with higher infection rates”, explained Peter Arlett, Head of Pharmacovigilance and Epidemiology Department at the EMA.

Marco Cavaleri, Head of Anti-infectives and Vaccines at the EMA, noted that it was still unclear what the mechanism behind the blood clot instances was, however, said that the agency was “in the process of starting a number of investigations” to get a better understanding of the situation.

“Of course, the fact they have occurred with both the AstraZeneca vaccine and the Jansen one that are based on an adenoviral vector technology would lead to the importance of checking whether other vaccines that use the same technology could be a risk of such events,” explained Cavaleri.

“We will be discussing with all the developers that will be proposing this kind of technology to us for a potential approval in the European Union,” added Cavaleri.

Cavaleri also said that the agency is looking at all platform technology “in order to understand whether any of them could be associated with the same rare events.”

The EMA’s Deputy Executive Director, Noel Wathion, has said it is “too early” to consider any regulatory change, with more evidence of benefits and risks required.

Vaxzevria is currently authorised for use by the EMA, however, has faced various restrictions amongst different EU member states due to concerns over cases of blood clotting, which can lead to death.

Both agencies say Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccinations can restart, after the shots’ rollout was paused due to worries over blood clotting.

  15. Is America Led By Anti-Americans Today?

How can America unite again to do great things if we are led by people who believe America suffers from a great sickness of the soul, an original sin that dates back to her birth as a nation?

    Consider.

After his long night of prayer for “the right verdict” to be pronounced — Derek Chauvin was convicted on all three counts — Joe Biden stepped before the White House cameras to tell us what it all meant.

George Floyd’s death, said Biden, “was a murder in the full light of day, and it ripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism… that is a stain on our nation’s soul — the knee on the neck of justice for Black Americans.”

Astonishing. Biden is saying that when Chauvin knelt on the neck of George Floyd for nine minutes as the life drained out of him, the world, for once, was getting a good, close look at the diseased soul of America.

What Chauvin was doing to Floyd, said the president of the United States, is a reflection of the kind of justice America delivers to Black Americans.

This is no aberration, Biden was saying. This is the routine reality.

https://www.gopusa.com/?p=109410?omhide=trueJoe Biden won’t get a full House for his first speech to Congress.

Only about 200 lawmakers will be allowed into the House chamber for Biden’s first address to a joint session of Congress next week because of coronavirus concerns, according to a U.S. Capitol official familiar with planning for the event.

The roughly 200 representatives and senators in attendance for Biden’s Wednesday address can’t bring along guests, either, the official said.

Between the House and Senate, there are 529 members of Congress. Caucus leaders in each chamber will pick which members can attend the speech in-person, the official said.

The official also noted that there will be spillover seating available in the House gallery.

Accommodations for Biden’s speech may be made easier by the fact that some GOP lawmakers have said they don’t plan to attend.

Other Republicans are upset by the fact that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), whose office is in charge of planning for the event, won’t allow a full audience.

Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel, witnessed violent clashes between Arab and Jewish protesters that left multiple Israeli police officers and participants injured late-night Thursday.

As Palestinian youth tossed firecrackers and lit dumpster fires, far-right, ultra-nationalist Jewish groups chanted and displayed anti-Arab slogans such as “Death to Arabs,” “Revenge,” and “Death to terrorists,” with some throwing stones and also lighting fires, reported the Jerusalem Post and the Times of Israel.

The clashes came following recent attacks against Jews in Israel by Arabs during Ramadan.

Israeli Police on horseback and wearing riot gear struggled to keep both sides from harming each other in the riots, which went on for hours up until early morning Friday, according to reporting from Reuters.

    Chris Pandolfo
    5-7 minutes

A Georgetown law student confronted Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Thursday about “court packing,” redefining the term to demand why Cruz was opposed to efforts by Democrats to expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court by four.

Cruz was speaking at a news conference with Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) in front of the Supreme Court about a Democratic bill to expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court from nine to 13. The senator from Texas accused Democrats of making a “power grab.”

“You didn’t see Republicans, when we had control of the Senate, try to rig the game. You didn’t see us try to pack the court,” he said.

After his remarks, a self-identified “law student” approached the senators and demanded to know what the difference was between “packing the courts” and the Republican Senate majority’s actions in 2016 to prevent a Democratic president from filling vacancies on the court and in 2020 to install a Republican-nominated justice.

“Senators, how is court packing any different than what the Republicans did in 2016 and 2020?” the law student asked.

Former President Donald Trump again endorsed COVID-19 vaccines but said that people should not be forced to get them—likely in response to several states and countries pushing for vaccine passport-type systems.

“The vaccine is a great thing and people should take advantage of it,” Trump told the New York Post on Thursday, but qualified his remarks by saying, “Nobody should be forced” as Americans “have our freedoms.”

“But I strongly recommend it because it’s a real lifesaver,” the former commander-in-chief continued, noting that his administration pushed to develop vaccines against the CCP virus. “I’m all in favor of the vaccine,” Trump said. “It’s one of the great achievements, a true miracle.”

“We’re saving tens of millions of lives throughout the world,” he said. “We’re saving entire countries.”

The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, also known as the novel coronavirus, causes COVID-19.

  26. The Movie SEASPIRACY

Everything you need to know about Netflix’s Seaspiracy.

Many people who have viewed the documentary say it has put them off eating fish for life, and you’ll never look at a nice pink piece of salmon in the supermarket the same way, either, after Tabrizi goes undercover at a Scottish salmon farm and discovers the fish have lice and other infestations, including chlamydia.

Seaspiracy is certainly a stomach-churning look at the commercial fishing industry, and its release is not without controversy. One expert who appears in the documentary, environmental studies scientist Professor Christina Hicks, has since tweeted: “Unnerving to discover your cameo in a film slamming an industry you love and have committed your career to. I’ve a lot to say about Seaspiracy but won’t.”

The Plastic Pollution Coalition, who also feature in the film, were equally unhappy about their portrayal: “Unfortunately, although the filmmakers said they were interested in the work of Plastic Pollution Coalition, when we answered the questions, they bullied our staff and cherry-picked seconds of our comments to support their own narrative.”

Viewers and critics have also questioned some of the explosive claims that Tabrizi makes in his movie – so which are agreed and which are disputed? Here’s a closer look at the facts contained in the movie.

  27. BRAZIL – “Brazil’s Bolsonaro says military would follow his orders to take the streets”

Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has claimed that “the order will be followed” if he decides to tell the country’s military to take the streets.

With some already fearing the former army captain – who is under fire on multiple fronts – could be laying the ground to disrupt a peaceful handover of power at next year’s presidential elections, Mr Bolsonaro gave the clearest sign yet on Friday that he was willing to deploy the military onto the country’s streets.

With Brazil’s coronavirus crisis spiralling, its president has been dismissive of both the virus itself, and of measures to contain it – warning in recent weeks of social chaos and unrest as a result of restrictions to movement and trade enforced locally by individual states and cities.

Speaking during a TV interview, Mr Bolsonaro said he would not “go into details into what I’m preparing”, but warned that “if we were to have problems, we have a plan of how to enter the field … our armed forces could one day go into the streets”.

Such a move, O Globo reported him as saying, would be to “re-establish Article 5 of the Constitution”, which makes reference to the individual rights of Brazil’s population. The Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper described him as talking of “curfew cowardice”.

Having thrown his support behind Donald Trump’s conspiracies of a stolen election last year, which culminated in the former US president’s supporters fatally storming the Capitol in Washington DC, Mr Bolsonaro has similarly made baseless allegations of voter fraud in Brazil since his election in 2018.

While no stranger to intense criticism, Mr Bolsonaro currently finds himself increasingly under fire – with the Senate recently launching an inquiry into his handling of the pandemic, and talk of his possible impeachment growing.

… “Most likely what he ordered was putting the military on the streets in these states or cities that the governors or the mayors decided on some kind of local social restrictions,” Professor Rezende told PRI.

  28. the gateway pundit – Canadian Judge Orders Google to Identify Creator of Website Criticizing Antifa

A judge in Nova Scotia has ordered Google to turn over the identity of the creator of a website that criticizes Antifa over accusations of “cyber bullying.”

The website, which is no longer online, was a blog about far-left extremists, called “Antifa: Exposed.”

    […]

The affidavit went on to claim “that the Blog, and Undercoverkity have caused them psychological stress and fear that they will be targeted with violence.”

A lawyer for the far-left activists claimed that the blogger’s intent “is to promote fear and hatred towards the applicants. Labelling individuals terrorists, and sinister criminals intent on destroying civilization is offensive and dangerous.”

The request for the blog author’s identity was granted under the new, and rarely used, Intimate Images and Cyber-protection Act, Nova Scotia legislation that was introduced in 2017, according to a report from the CBC.
