Reader’s Links for April 17, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Just take one look at this poor sucker and it’s plain why he committed a murder-suicide. Have you ever seen such a crappy excuse for a face? Imagine the hours he must have spent staring into the mirror saying, “God, why did you make me look so effing ridiculous along with having an IQ of 87? I make Alfred E. Neuman look like Charleton Heston by comparison. No girl will ever give me the time of day let alone go with me and no guy will ever take me seriously with this ridiculous stupid face. I hate you, God!!!”.

The killings weren’t a cry for help, they were a cry of sheer agony and rage at the hand he was dealt. Poor bastard…

  2. “Did you get vaccinated yet?” my boy’s teacher asked.
“No. I’m not as old as you. Not my turn yet. Did you get both shots?” I asked.
“Not yet. The second one I get in July, I think. Scary stuff, this virus,” he continued. “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I guess.”

The Zoom lesson commenced. They discussed solos and voicings, substitutions and fingering shapes at various positions on the fret board. They discussed tension and release, and went very deeply into musical theory. I understood little of it but always tried to sit in if I could. I liked to watch my son’s progress.

About half way through the lesson things changed. “Wrong!” Burst his teacher suddenly. “That’s not how I taught you. You do it my way or not at all!”

This was highly uncharacteristic behavior. He had always been very, very patient and open minded. My son looked over at me not knowing how to react. He was a very good student, often showing the teacher mistakes of his own. This unusual display of anger and control continued for the next 25 minutes. Both my son and I were relieved once it was over. Another experience like this, I thought, and we’d be shopping for another teacher.

The next day driving along I had an epiphany while listening to the radio news. As always they were talking about lockdowns, vaccines, injection sites, side effects, and about suspensions of the use of some of these mRNA information therapy injections. And suddenly I understood why my son’s tutor acted so strangely.

Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you Bill Gates, I guess.

Just en passant (as they say in my beloved France to which I cannot return, since Qantas said, first one of the block, ” no jab no fly “):

Did your son really say that ? If so, I hope he will be the leader of Canada as soon as possible. If he did not, it’s a brilliant piece of writing, as is the following sentence which goes straight into my “quotes” folder:

“””Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you Bill Gates, I guess.””””

      • Hi Richard….once again I wish I could share your positive perspective. But while I cannot, most of the time, seeing it makes me feel good.

        • Digital currencies are fiat currencies on the web, they reduce the cost of printing but are still fiat. Once the hyper inflation and economic collapse the digital currencies will collapse as well.

Paying cash is a good idea, keep doing it, the government and banks don’t need to know what you are buying.

Scientists Warn Pfizer, Moderna Vaccines May Cause Blood Clots, Too

The Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca COVID vaccines are under the microscope for their potential to cause blood clots, but scientists warn Pfizer and Moderna vaccines pose similar risks.

U.S. and European health officials are scrutinizing the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and AstraZeneca COVID vaccines for possibly causing blood clots and related blood disorders in vaccine recipients.

But evidence is mounting that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines cause similar adverse reactions — and U.S. regulatory officials were alerted to that fact as far back as December 2020.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting of its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to determine whether to lift a ban on the J&J vaccine. The ban was put in place Tuesday, after reports of blood clots.

During the meeting, committee members hailed the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines as great alternatives to the J&J vaccine because there were “no safety signals” — suggesting, unlike the J&J and AstraZeneca adenovirus-based vaccines, mRNA vaccines are not associated with blood clots.

FILE – (AP Photo/John Locher, File)

It’s been an inexplicable 24 days and counting that Vice President Kamala Harris has not visited the U.S. southern border or detention facilities since President Joe Biden announced she’ll be the Administration’s point person handling the immigration and humanitarian crisis.

Harris’ glaring absence at the border and U.S. detention facilities that house thousands of illegal immigrants and unaccompanied minors is a political misstep. She is squandering a golden opportunity to demonstrate leadership to the American people and convince voters, on both sides of the aisle, she’s capable of being president someday.

Instead of taking a backseat from her new role by exploring the root cause of mass migration from Mexico and the northern triangle countries, Harris should be in the driver’s seat assembling an all-star team of immigration and homeland security experts, child welfare advocates and humanitarian professionals to address the spiraling crisis.

Harris should then hold a press conference outlining her plan to fix the myriad problems unfolding at the southern border and child detention facilities that Democrats used to call “cages.” Next, she should visit the border and detention facilities in Texas, California, Arizona and elsewhere with her team — and press in tow — to document her problem-solving skills to the American people.

Racial Justice: Reform experts and diversity specialists tell retailers to stop calling police on minorities

George Floyd died in police custody after a corner store clerk reported he had used a fake $20 bill, a nonviolent offense so low-level that police don’t usually take people to jail for it.

Now, as the trial over his death continues to unfold, criminal justice reform experts and diversity specialists are hoping the case will prompt retailers — from small businesses to major chains — to reassess how they treat black and other minority customers and how they can handle loss prevention cases more equitably.

Retailers, they point out, are on the front lines of racial justice in their own stores.

“While interactions with the police can be fairly infrequent, everyone shops,” said Cassi Pitt man Claytor, a sociology professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, who has studied racial profiling in retail settings. “When [Black people] are asked about the contexts where they are treated unfairly due to their race … shopping in a store ranks above all other settings, including interactions with the police.”

Since Floyd’s death last May, many retailers have made public promises committing to racial equity. Several companies, including Twin Cities-based Target and Best Buy, have shared their plans to diversify hiring and made financial contributions to Black-owned businesses and organizations focused on fighting inequality.

Friday night riots: Fires set, stores looted in Portland and other cities

    Graffiti at the Portland riot.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police in Portland, Oregon, declared a riot on Friday night after authorities said protesters smashed windows and burglarized businesses during demonstrations that gathered in a park earlier in the day after police fatally shot a man while responding to reports of a person with a gun.

The vandalism took place in response to the police shooting but also was part of vigils and demonstrations already planned for Friday night in the name of people killed in recent police shootings nationwide, including 13-year-old Adam Toledo of Chicago and Daunte Wright, a Black man in Minneapolis.

Deputy Police Chief Chris Davis told reporters earlier in the day that a white man in his 30s was shot and killed by police, who opened fire with a gun and weapons that fire non-lethal projectiles.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene in Lents Park, which is in a leafy, residential neighborhood of the city.

Two officers fired a 40mm device that shoots non-lethal projectiles, and one officer — an eight-year veteran — fired a gun, police said in a statement. The officer is on paid administrative leave, and his or her name will be released Saturday, authorities said.

Last week Joe Biden made another gaffe. It came during his speech on gun control in which he twice referred to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as the “AFT” instead of the ATF.

Yesterday, he returned for seconds. This time he botched the abbreviation for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the misguided Iran nuke deal that Barack Obama had inflicted on the Middle East and which Biden has pledged to attempt to revive. Instead of referring to the agreement as the JCPOA, Biden again transposed a letter, calling it the “JOPCA.”

  21. As mask mandates end, Oregon bucks trend with permanent rule

As states around the country lift COVID-19 restrictions, Oregon is poised to go the opposite direction — and many residents are fuming about it.

A top health official is considering indefinitely extending rules requiring masks and social distancing in all businesses in the state.

The proposal would keep the rules in place until they are “no longer necessary to address the effects of the pandemic in the workplace.”

Michael Wood, administrator of the state’s department of Occupational Safety and Health, said the move is necessary to address a technicality in state law that requires a “permanent” rule to keep current restrictions from expiring.

“We are not out of the woods yet,” he said.

But the idea has prompted a flood of angry responses, with everyone from parents to teachers to business owners and employees crying government overreach.

Wood’s agency received a record number of public comments, mostly critical, and nearly 60,000 residents signed a petition against the proposal.

Opponents also are upset government officials won’t say how low Oregon’s COVID-19 case numbers must go, or how many people would have to be vaccinated, to get the requirements lifted in a state that’s already had some of the nation’s strictest safety measures.

“When will masks be unnecessary? What scientific studies do these mandates rely on, particularly now that the vaccine is days away from being available to everyone?” said state Sen. Kim Thatcher, a Republican from Keizer, near the state’s capital. “Businesses have had to play ‘mask cop’ for the better part of a year now. They deserve some certainty on when they will no longer be threatened with fines.”

Wood said he is reviewing all the feedback to see if changes are needed before he makes a final decision by May 4, when the current rules lapse.

Oregon, a blue state, has been among those with the country’s most stringent COVID-19 restrictions and now stands in contrast with much of the rest of the nation as vaccines become more widely available.

At least six states — Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota and Texas — have lifted mask mandates, and some never implemented them. In Texas, businesses reopened at 100% capacity last month.

In January, Virginia became the first in the nation to enact permanent COVID-19 workplace safety and health rules.

“While the end of this pandemic is finally in sight, the virus is still spreading — and now is not the time to let up on preventative measures,” Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam said following the announcement.

Besides mask and distancing requirements, Oregon’s proposal includes more arcane workplace rules regarding air flow, ventilation, employee notification in case of an outbreak, and sanitation protocols.

It dovetails with separate actions issued by Democratic Gov. Kate Brown, using a state of emergency declaration, requiring masks in public statewide — and even outside when 6 feet (1.83 meters) of distance can’t be maintained — and providing strict, county-by-county thresholds for business closures or reductions in capacity when case numbers rise above certain levels.

More than a third of Oregon’s counties are currently limited to indoor social gatherings of six people, and the maximum occupancy for indoor dining, indoor entertainment and gyms is 25% capacity or 50 people, whichever is less. And many schools are just now reopening after a year of online learning.

The workplace rule is “driven by the pandemic, and it will be repealed,” Wood said.

“But, it might not need to go away at exactly the same time the State of Emergency is lifted,” he said, referring to Brown’s executive orders.

Amid pandemic frustration and deprivation, the issue has gained a lot of attention. A petition on change.org opposing the rule gained nearly 60,000 signatures and spread on social media, drawing even more interest to the proposal. More than 5,000 public comments were sent to the agency, smashing its previous record of 1,100.

“The majority of comments were simply hostile to the entire notion of COVID-19 restrictions,” Wood said. “The vast majority of comments were in the context of, ‘You never needed to do anything.’”

Justin Spaulding, a doctor at the Cataract & Laser Institute of Southern Oregon, is among those who raised concerns about the proposal in public comments.

“I do not understand these new guidelines for business. If we put these into effect we will only continue to blunt the recent drop in business,” he wrote. “We have a large subset of patients that are unwilling (or) hostile with the current guidelines, and making them permanent will only make it worse.”

For Thatcher, the GOP state lawmaker, the most concerning part is “OSHA’s lack of clarity” on when the rules will be lifted.

Officials said they have every intent to repeal the rule, and that decision will be made based on a complex mix of factors, including case counts, vaccination rates, case severity and advice from the Oregon Health Authority.

“It will be a complicated assessment when we do it, and I would say it is impossibly complicated to do in advance,” Wood said.
