Reader’s links for April 7, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Covid-19 is a new disease, and very little direct research is currently available about its development. However, studies have been published on similar illnesses, which may be significant. One key paper from 2005, published shortly after the outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) reported that nitric oxide inhibits the replication cycle of the virus7. Although the total number of deaths relating to Covid-19 has now exceeded those recorded during the 2002-2003 SARS epidemic, the current mortality rate is still much lower than that of SARS, which killed 9.6 percent of those infected6….

Really unequal justice: What’s behind foreign-donation offenders getting wildly different sentences?

Imaad Zuberi, left, with Hillary Clinton. Zuberi image, YouTube video. Gilbert Chagoury, right, YouTube viedo

The political news seems to take considerable parsing these days, and is frequently illuminated by a bit of research. It doesn’t even have to be very much; often, it requires little effort to track a keyword or name through to things that make you go, Hmmm.

Such is the case with a situation reported by John Solomon on 5 April at Just the News. In his article, he highlights the legitimately YUUGE difference between the sentences of two men, political campaign donors, charged essentially with the same crimes.

One is Clinton Foundation donor Gilbert Chagoury, who was charged among other things with laundering foreign donations to Mitt Romney in 2012, and who passed through a foreign-sourced loan to Obama Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood (when LaHood was in office). He “got a fine, no prison and deferred prosecution” for his offenses.

The European Medical Watchdog says the “unusual blood clots” reported by a small number of those taking the AstraZeneca jab should be listed as a “very rare” side-effect.

The statement comes after several countries suspended the jab rollout due to fears about the safety of the vaccine.

Earlier this week, the EMA’s head of vaccine strategy said it was “increasingly difficult” to say there is “no cause and effect relationship” between the jab and “rare cases of unusual blood clots”.

MONTREAL — Quebec’s workplace health and safety board will require that medical masks be worn at all times indoors in workplaces beginning Thursday.

The new measure announced today will apply everywhere in the province, and the board says it is an additional precaution, along with distancing and physical barriers, against the rise of more contagious COVID-19 variants.

  5. zero hedge – 246 “Fully Vaccinated” Michigan Residents Catch COVID-19, 3 Die

So much for the COVID jabs being “100% effective” at preventing “serious illness.”

Michigan, now the epicenter of the American COVID outbreak, is desperately begging the federal government for more vaccines. But reports about a rash of infections in “fully vaccinated” patients might provoke a rethink.

The Detroit News reported that as many as 246 vaccinated Michigan residents later tested positive for the deadly bug, including three who have died. The cases were reported between Jan. 1 and March 31, and the 246 had a positive test 14 or more days after the last dose in the vaccine series, said Lynn Sutfin, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

“Some of these individuals may ultimately be excluded from this list due to continuing to test positive from a recent infection prior to being fully vaccinated,” she said.

“These cases are undergoing further review to determine if they meet other CDC criteria for determination of potential breakthrough, including the absence of a positive antigen or PCR test less than 45 days prior to the post-vaccination positive test. In general, these persons have been more likely to be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic compared with vaccinated persons.”

The department had hospitalization data for 117 of the cases, but 129 were incomplete, Sutfin added. The three deaths were all “persons 65 years or older,” and two of them died within three weeks of completion of vaccination, she said. “While the majority of the population develops full immunity within 14 days of completion of their vaccine series, a small proportion appear to take onger to mount a full antibody response.” Of the 117 with data available, 11 were hospitalized, 103 were not hospitalized, and 3 are reported as unknown, Sutfin said.

As of April 4, about 2.95 million residents, or about 36.5% of Michigan’s population, have been vaccinated, either with one or two doses, according to the state website. About 4.7M doses had been administered.

New cases have surged over the last month, pushing the 7-day average to its highest level since late last year. Even deaths have started to creep higher, a possible effect of mutant strains that are spreading faster in the state.

  18. White House Seeks to Create Legal Ways for Central Americans to Immigrate to US: Envoy
    By Tom Ozimek
    April 7, 2021 Updated: April 7, 2021
    biggersmaller Print

The White House is looking to create ways for would-be asylum seekers from Central America—who may otherwise seek to make the perilous trek north and cross the border illegally—to enter into the United States lawfully, President Joe Biden’s special envoy Ricardo Zuniga said on Tuesday.

Zuniga, Biden’s envoy to the so-called Northern Triangle countries in Central America—Guatelamala, Honduras, and El Salvador—said on a state visit to Guatemala that the White House was looking to offer protections to migrants amid a push by Biden to reshape the U.S. border policy and as the administration struggles to cope with a sharp rise in illegal border crossings.

The surge in illegal immigration from the three Northern Triangle countries has become one of the biggest political challenges to the Biden administration, with Republicans blaming the wave of illegal border crossings on a rollback of Trump-era immigration policies and on messaging that many would-be migrants and human traffickers are interpreting as an invitation to come to the United States.

Almost 200 British academics from 20 unnamed UK universities are being investigated for possibly sharing British technology with China that could be used in the Chinese government’s repression of minorities and dissidents, according to a recent news report by The Times. The revelation came shortly after the University of Manchester cancelled a research partnership with China Electronics Technology Group (CETC).

The cancellation came after the university was warned that CETC is, “one of the main architects of the Chinese government’s surveillance state in Xinjiang, China, providing both technology and infrastructure that is being used for the identity-based persecution of more than one million people, predominantly Uyghur Muslims”. The university said their research collaboration with CETC aimed to “significantly advance the field of radio astronomy” and that it had been unaware of CETC’s alleged role in the persecution of Uyghurs.

  21. Jordan crisis: How Prince Hamzah and Saudi Arabia fit in
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56654108
Saudi officials have categorically denied suggestions their country had any role in the alleged coup attempt in Jordan.
On Saturday Jordan’s popular former Crown Prince Hamzah was placed under de facto house arrest and accused of undermining national security after attending tribal meetings where King Abdullah, his half-brother, was openly criticised. Prince Hamzah then released to the BBC two videos, calling his country’s government corrupt and incompetent, and saying that people were afraid to speak out for fear of harassment by the security forces.
The crisis has since been de-escalated after mediation by the king’s uncle, but speculation is rife as to Saudi Arabia’s role.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan flew to the Jordanian capital Amman with a delegation in order, say Saudi officials, to “express complete solidarity with Jordan’s King Abdullah and his government”. This, they said, was the single, unified Saudi position and any suggestion that Saudi Arabia was involved in trying to destabilise its much smaller neighbour was “far-fetched nonsense”.
When the crisis was at its peak over the weekend, Jordanian officials said their security agencies had been monitoring the activities of Prince Hamzah and more than a dozen officials for some time. They spoke of mysterious, unnamed “foreign entities” as having been involved in what they said was a plot to destabilise the country and its royal family – something denied by Prince Hamzah.
It turns out there are essentially two separate issues here. One is Prince Hamzah, the popular elder son of the late King Hussein, who rattled Jordan’s security chiefs with his recent contacts with disgruntled tribal figures. The other involves a number of officials who are alleged to have had links to at least one other country.
One of the most prominent figures arrested on Saturday was Bassem Awadallah, the former head of Jordan’s Royal Court and now an economic adviser to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He holds dual Saudi-Jordanian citizenship and has appeared as a moderator at Saudi Arabia’s high-profile Future Investment Initiative forums. The Washington Post reported that the Saudi foreign minister’s delegation was refusing to leave Jordan without taking Bassem Awadallah back to Riyadh with them. This, say Saudi officials, is untrue.
Bassem Awadullah has a number of powerful international connections. As well as his position close to Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, he has links to the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed. He has reportedly been involved in recent UAE-backed purchases of Palestinian land around Jerusalem.
Saudi Arabia and Jordan meanwhile, although vastly different in economic terms, have much in common. Their deep historic ties go back centuries and tribal links straddle the joint desert border. When, in my 20s, I lived with the Bedouin from the Bani Huwaitat tribe in southern Jordan, they frequently used to roam into Saudi Arabia and back, exchanging goods and news while tending their sheep, goats and camels. As surviving Sunni Arab monarchies in a part of the world rocked to its foundations by the Arab Spring uprisings, both countries’ rulers have a vested interest in supporting each other.
It is certainly hard to see the logic behind either of Jordan’s most powerful neighbours – Saudi Arabia or Israel – wanting to destabilise this small, relatively impoverished kingdom. Under the late King Hussein and now his son King Abdullah, Jordan’s monarchy, the Hashemite dynasty, has managed to survive the buffeting winds of Middle Eastern politics.
A 1994 peace treaty with Israel, while domestically unpopular, has brought some regional stability. But Jordan has few natural resources and its already overstretched infrastructure has had to cope with huge influxes of refugees, first from Iraq and later from Syria. The Covid-19 pandemic has temporarily killed off the tourist industry, dealing another blow to a weak economy. Popular resentment at what is seen as government mismanagement is growing.
Yet governments in the region know that were Jordan’s monarchy to fall, this could trigger a dangerous chain of events. Hence the rapid and public declarations of support for King Abdullah from his neighbours. Waiting in the wings, both al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) group would be only too delighted to see chaos reign in a country that has so far been a linchpin of stability in the Middle East.
