  1. Really disturbing. IS is alive and well and enjoying government protection in Turkey. They’re still selling Yezidi child slaves, and transferring money using the “hawala” method.

Online ‘auctions’ of Yazidi captives speak of ongoing Islamic State activity in Turkey
The rescue of a 7-year-old Yazidi captive in Ankara raises questions about how hard Turkey is trying to tackle Islamic State militants in the country.

Six years after its gruesome assault on the Yazidi minority in Iraq, the Islamic State (IS) continues to sell Yazidi captives online on what is known as the “deep web” of criminal activities. A number of such sales have taken place in Turkey, indicating that IS militants are still able to take shelter in the country.
Most recently, a 7-year-old Yazidi girl was rescued by police posing as buyers. According to Turkish journalist Hale Gonultas, who closely follows the fate of IS captives, police took action after an advertisement in Kurdish and Arabic, complete with the girl’s picture, appeared online Feb. 23. Posing as relatives of the child, the police made the highest bid and were able to detect the address of the advertiser. They raided a home in Ankara’s Kecioren district the following day and rescued the girl.
According to the official account of the incident, police and intelligence services established that a suspect, who was a ranking member of IS in Mosul, Iraq, had made it to Ankara, bringing along a Yazidi child as “war booty.” The man, identified only as S.O., was detained along with a suspected accomplice.
After such online “auctions,” the captives are usually delivered via “safe middlemen” who are typically criminals involved in the trafficking of drugs, arms and humans. The rescued girl remains in state care in Ankara, as Iraqi commissions dealing with missing Yazidis are working to trace her family.
In July 2020, a 24-year-old Yazidi woman, held captive in Ankara’s Sincan district, was rescued by relatives in Australia who “bought” her in an online sale. According to Gonultas, the Yazidi woman’s captor — a Turkmen IS member from Mosul — had bought her from an online slave market in 2018.
    [..]
Kart told Al-Monitor that police had grown reluctant to take on Islamist groups unless they receive explicit orders from Ankara. He recalled an incident in 2015, when a family, trying to trace a son who had joined IS, failed to set the police into action even after providing the address of a cell house in Gaziantep near the Syrian border. Kart contacted a local police chief to help the family. “He told me, ‘You are right. The parents want us to raid the place but we cannot do so without instructions from Ankara.’ All the information was there — how many people stayed in the house and from which provinces they had come. So, that is how Turkey came to the current point,” Kart said.
IS militants in Turkey continue also to transfer money through jewelers and exchange offices, using the “hawala” method. The detentions are just the tip of the iceberg, with the IS network much larger than it is generally imagined.

Secret Service denied it was involved in Hunter Biden gun case; purported texts suggest otherwise

    Joe Biden, Hunter Biden

    By Bradley Stein

Texts allegedly linking the Secret Service to Hunter Biden’s 2018 gun case were uncovered by the New York Post on Friday.

In a Jan. 29, 2019 text message, Biden reportedly wrote that his former sister-in-law turned girlfriend, Hallie Biden, stole the gun from the trunk of his car and told law enforcement authorities, including the Secret Service, that she disposed of it over fears Biden would use the gun to harm himself, the Post reported. The purported texts appear to contradict the Secret Service’s denial of involvement in the incident.

“She stole the gun out of my trunk lock box and threw it in a garbage can full to the top at Jansens [sic]. Then told me it was my problem to deal with,” Hunter wrote in a text obtained by the Post.

“Then when the police the FBI the secret service came on the scene she said she took it from me because she was scared I would harm myself due to my drug and alcohol problem and our volatile relationship and that she was afraid for the kids,” wrote Biden.

    • GERMAN PRAVDA – Suez Canal: Why is freeing the blocked ship so complicated?

A fresh attempt today to refloat the vessel was not successful.

The ship plugging the chokepoint that funnels 30 percent of the global seaborne trade.400 meters long and weighing more than 200,000 tons, the “Ever Given” has become an immovable barrier shutting down Egypt’s Suez Canal.

      • While DW (Deutsche Welle), a servant of the Merkel-Regime has no credibility, I think this time they are asking a question that might be justified. I too smell a rat here….

        • With the forward compartments already breached they are going to be very careful to see that the ship isn’t broken in the middle. This means that the cargo will have to be removed in such a way that the balance of the ship isn’t put in jeopardy.. I know that reloating it seems to be a simple job but it isn’t, a ship that size can be damaged because of one end become much lighter or heaver then the other and having he middle become lighter or heaver can result in a broken keel. If the keel is damaged then you have to be very careful that the ship doesn’t sink in the canal.

    • Over three hundred ships waiting to transit Suez Canal – Suez Canal Authority chairman

    • 321 vessels jammed around Suez Canal as salvage of stuck container ship underway

SUEZ, Egypt, March 27 (Xinhua) — At least 321 vessels are currently jammed around Egypt’s Suez Canal awaiting salvage of the giant container ship Ever Given that has been stuck and blocking the vital waterway since Tuesday, Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), said Saturday.

“The number of ships waiting now, whether in the north, the south or in the Lakes is 321. We provide them with all the logistic services they ask for,” the SCA chief told a press conference in the northeastern province of Suez.

“It’s difficult to tell when the problem will be solved, because, as I said, the ship is huge with a large load and it is stuck in a shallow area,” Rabie said.

He pointed out that 14 tug boats are working to salvage Ever Given from all directions.

“Last night, there were signs of success … to the point that we were very hopeful that the salvage will be completed last night,” The SCA chief said, adding authority is prepared with several scenarios to refloat the mega ship that causes “a big crisis.”

The 224,000-ton Panama-flagged Ever Given was grounded on Tuesday in the canal after losing the ability to steer amid high winds and a sandstorm, which led the SCA to announce on Thursday temporary suspension of navigation in the man-made waterway.

Rabie said there will be investigation into the exact cause of the accident but after the rescue process is done.

Dutch firm Boskalis with its emergency response team Smit Salvage is hired by Ever Given’s owner to assist the SCA in the rescue operations.

Strong wind not main reason for Suez ship grounding: Canal chief

SUEZ, Egypt: Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority chief said on Saturday (Mar 27) that strong wind was not the main reason for the grounding of the MV Ever Given cargo ship in the waterway.

“Strong winds and weather factors were not the main reasons for the ship’s grounding, there may have been technical or human errors,” Osama Rabie said at a press conference in Suez.

“All of these factors will become apparent in the investigation,” he added.

Asked when the ship could be afloat again, he suggested it was possible “today or tomorrow, depending on the ship’s responsiveness to the tides”,

The MV Ever Given, which is longer than four football fields, has been wedged diagonally across the canal since Tuesday, blocking one of the world’s most vital waterways in both directions.

The canal authority chief said over 300 vessels are now treading water at either end of the canal, which links the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

Addressing journalists in Suez, Rabie outlined Egypt’s efforts with tugboats and excavators to free the bow and propellers of mega-ship in order to reopen the canal.

Rabie noted that on 10.30pm on Friday the propellers had been able to spin, although not at full speed.

However they were jammed again due to the changing tide, he said, adding that rescuers had had to resort to excavators again overnight to continue the dredging process.

“The type of soil we’re dealing with is very difficult to manage, as are the tides which affect the vessel due to its size and its cargo load,” he added.

Rabie also noted that the blockage had caused “no fatalities or pollution”.

The ship’s grounding is holding up about US$9.6 billion worth of cargo each day between Asia and Europe, according to Lloyd’s List data.

Rabie estimated that Egypt is losing about US$12 million to US$14 million in revenue from the canal for each day it is closed.

The United States also said it was ready to send support, including a team of US Navy experts.

Rabie thanked the US for its support along with China and the United Arab Emirates.

reuters – Ship blocking Suez Canal moves slightly, unclear when it will refloat

Efforts to dislodge a giant container ship blocking the Suez Canal had allowed its stern and rudder to move on Saturday, but it remained unclear when it could be refloated, the head of the canal authority said.

[…]“The ship’s stern began to move towards Suez, and that was a positive sign until 11 p.m. (2100 GMT) at night, but the tide fell significantly and we stopped,” Rabie told journalists in Suez.

“We expect that at any time the ship could slide and move from the spot it is in,” he added.

Dredgers had removed some 20,000 tonnes of sand from around its bow by Friday. A Dutch firm working to free the vessel said it could be freed by the start of next week if heavier tugboats, dredging and a high tide succeed in dislodging it.

Tugging attempts restarted on Saturday afternoon and further efforts were planned on Saturday night and Sunday morning, three sources with knowledge of canal operations said, though they added it could be necessary to remove more sand from around the ship to free it.

[…]“Heavy tugboats, with a combined capacity of 400 tonnes, will arrive this weekend. We hope that a combination of the tugboats, dredging of sand at the bow and a high tide will enable us to get the ship loose at the beginning of next week.”

[…]Berdowski said a land crane would be brought in at the weekend which could lighten the Ever Given’s load by removing containers, though experts have warned that such a process could be complex and lengthy.

“If we don’t succeed in getting it loose next week, we will have to remove some 600 containers from the bow to reduce the weight,” he said.

“That will set us back days at least, because where to leave all those containers will be quite a puzzle.”

    • Sandstorm not main reason behind mega ship Ever Given blockage of the Suez Canal, 321 vessels jammed: SCA chairman

[…]Rabie said in a press conference that other factors resulted in the vessel running aground, stressing that “all would be revealed following investigations”.

“It could be a technical or human error. All will be determined following investigations,” he said, adding that twelve vessels in the south crossed the canal shortly before the blockage, while there were 20 others crossing from the north.

He also said that there were “no injuries, deaths or pollution” caused by the crisis.

[…]He also said that the blockage did not occur in the new Suez Canal, but in the older channel’s southern entrance.

“If [the incident] was in the new canal, it would have been resolved easily,” said Rabie, adding that the Ever Given vessel has crossed the canal before.

[…]He hopes that the authority does not have to resort to a scenario which would require offloading the Ever Given’s containers – estimated at around 108,300 – if current efforts are not successful.

“Offloading such heavy containers using helicopters is difficult. This [offloading] is usually done through other empty vessels and cranes of considerable height to offload containers from above,” said Rabie.

the guardian – Tugs, tides and 200,000 tons: experts fear Ever Given may be stuck in Suez for weeks

Key hurdles are size and weight of container vessel, which is as tall as a 20-storey block of flat

[…]A key hurdle has been the sheer size and weight of the enormous vessel, part of a class of container ships that has ballooned in size over the past two decades, partly due to the proliferation of “just in time” logistical models that keep companies lean, efficient and reliant on fast deliveries from factories and warehouses overseas.

The experts brought in to free the vessel, the Dutch company SMIT Salvage and Japanese specialists Nippon Salvage, have been working to dislodge tens of thousands of cubic metres of earth around the stricken vessel, as tugboats help to pull it free.

“These are the experts, but it took them three days to get into country, now they have to find these large tugboats and get them to the canal, they’re not positioned there,” said Captain John Konrad, a maritime expert and the founder of maritime news-site gCaptain.

The refloating process, he explained, will likely involve a manoeuvre called a “backwards twist,” using large tugboats to rotate the ship counterclockwise and dislodge it from the bank after dredging sand from around the bow.

[…]Should the pulling and dredging fail, one of the worst-case scenarios would be that the vessel must be relieved of some of the around 20,000 containers it is carrying, a process Konrad said would involve bringing in specialised cranes and other equipment and would likely extend the timeline by weeks.

“The containers are a problem as they’re stacked so tall – there aren’t many cranes in the world that can reach that high,” he said. “You need very big and heavy equipment, and you can’t fly it in. You have to put a crane on a barge and bring it in, as there isn’t capacity nearby. The tugboats, the barge and the crane, all the equipment needs to come in from both sides, but there’s no room in the canal for them to move it through.”

Experts also point to the Ever Given’s position, with its bow and stern stuck in opposite banks of the canal, as a potential source of further problems.

“The vessel is in a precarious position, it’s hanging by its ends,” said Sal Mercogliano, a former merchant mariner, maritime historian, and associate professor at Campbell University in North Carolina. This position, exacerbated by lowering tides, can stress the body of the ship along its length, potentially causing cracks that can lead to further problems including the ship leaking fuel.

“I have some reservations about the Egyptians just wantonly dredging alongside the vessel. Removing the dirt alongside the vessel sounds like a great idea. But what a salvage team would want to do is assess exactly what condition the vessel is in first,” he said.

“You don’t want the ship to crack, you don’t want it to, heaven forbid, break in half, because you do something wrong. If you start dredging without really doing a survey, you run the risk of the vessel doing something unexpected. And when I say unexpected, that’s a nice way to say roll, crack or break.”

NYT – ‘A Very Big Problem.’ Giant Ship in the Suez Remains Stuck.

[…]Hauling cars, oil, livestock, laptops, jet fuel, scrap metal, grain, sweaters, sneakers, appliances, toilet paper, toys, medical equipment and much more, the vessels were supposed to supply much of the world, and the canal was to have been their quickest path from Asia and the Middle East to Europe and the east coast of the United States.

[…]Their best chance may arrive on Monday, when a spring tide will raise the canal’s water level by up to about 18 inches, analysts and shipping agents said.

[…]Several dredgers, including a specialized suction dredger that can extract 2,000 cubic meters of material per hour, were digging around the vessel’s bow, which is wedged into the canal’s eastern bank, the company said. It added that high-capacity pumps would begin to pump water from the vessel’s ballast tanks to lighten the ship.

[…]The team of eight Dutch salvage experts and naval architects overseeing the operation will need to survey the ship and the seabed and create a computer model that will help it work around the vessel without damaging it, said Capt. Nick Sloane, a South African salvage master who led the operation to right the Costa Concordia, the cruise ship that capsized in 2012 off the coast of Italy.

They will need to clear other vessels from the area, a massive coordination effort. And they will need to account for the possibility that the Ever Given’s grounding has rearranged the seabed, making it harder for other ships to pass through the area even after it has been moved, said Capt. Paul Foran, a marine consultant who has worked on other salvage operations.

All the while, they must hope the Ever Given remains intact. With the ship sagging in the middle, its bow and stern both caught in positions for which it was not designed, the hull is vulnerable to stress and cracks, both experts said.

But in most other respects, the Ever Given had succumbed to Murphy’s Law: Everything that could go wrong did, starting with the ship’s size, among the world’s largest.

“It was the biggest ship in the convoy, and she ended up in the worst part of the canal” — a narrow section with only one lane, Captain Sloane said. “And that was just really unfortunate.”

[…]All this because, to put it simply: “This is a very big ship; this is a very big problem,”

Villagers and shipping analysts had the same question about the Ever Given, if rooted in different expertise. The ship’s operators have insisted that the ship ran aground because of the high winds of a sandstorm, with the stacked containers acting like a giant sail, yet other ships in the same convoy passed through without incident. So had previous ships in previous storms, the villagers pointed out.

“We’ve seen worse winds,” said Ahmad al-Sayed, 19, a security guard, “but nothing like that ever happened before.”

Two pilots from the Suez Canal typically board large ships transiting the canal to help guide them through, though they are steered by a member of the crew, said Captain Foran, the maritime consultant.

Shipping experts and government officials said the wind could well have been a factor, exacerbating other physical forces, but they suggested that human error may have come into play.

“A significant incident like this is usually the result of many reasons: The weather was one reason, but maybe there was a technical error, or a human error,” Lt. Gen. Osama Rabie, chief of Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority, said at a news conference on Saturday.

Captain Foran posed a similar question.

“I am highly questioning, why was it the only one that went aground?” he said. “But they can talk about all that later. Right now, they just have to get that beast out of the canal.”

  15. zero hedge – US Makes Large Military Hardware Delivery To Ukraine’s Army After Biden Pledged “Crimea is Ukraine”

Russian state sources are alleging that Washington under the Biden administration is ramping up military aid to Ukraine after local media observed a US cargo ship delivering 350 tonnes of military equipment – including tactical vehicles – to Ukraine’s Odessa port.

Local media reported the delivery which began late Wednesday and which is said to still be in process Friday. Ukraine’s Dumskaya news agency said the American vessel carried at least 35 US military humvees for Ukrainian national forces.

“Dry-cargo ship Ocean Glory under the American flag entered the port of Odessa last night,” the report indicated.

“The bulk carrier Ocean Glory specializes in military transportation. Built in 2015, length 171 meters, width 25 meters, deadweight about 20 thousand tons,” it added according to a translation.

The delivery follows last year’s US DoD announcement of an additional $125 million military assistance package for Ukraine (unveiled in March) which involves equipment, training, and military advisory support, with an additional $150 million waiting for Congressional and Pentagon approval.

Recall that a little over a month after Biden taking office, the White House issued an official communique commemorating “Russia’s illegal invasions of Ukraine” – as the statement put it.

“The United States continues to stand with Ukraine and its allies and partners today, as it has from the beginning of this conflict. On this somber anniversary, we reaffirm a simple truth: Crimea is Ukraine,” the Biden administration said on Feb.26.

“The United States does not and will never recognize Russia’s purported annexation of the peninsula, and we will stand with Ukraine against Russia’s aggressive acts.”

Needless to say the Kremlin has been monitoring US equipment deliveries through Odessa port very closely as concerns grow over Biden’s Russia and China-centric foreign policy, which has seen additional pressure ramping up fast on both countries, including fresh sanctions against Kremlin officials of late and vows of impending cyber-attacks in retaliation for alleged US election ‘interference’.

  21. Pompeo in Iowa rips ‘raw power grab’ by Dems, visit to early caucus state sparks speculation

URBANDALE, IOWA — In what appears to be the unofficial start to the next race for president, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Iowa on Friday, becoming the first potential 2024 Republican White House hopeful to visit one of the four early voting caucus and primary states that kick off the presidential nominating calendar.

But the former congressman from Kansas who served as CIA director and then as America’s top diplomat during the Trump administration said that the mission of his trip – and others he’s making to states across the country – is to help the GOP win back the majorities in the House and Senate in the 2022 midterm elections.

By removing Yemen’s Houthis from the list of foreign terrorist organizations and cutting off US support to confront the militia group, the Biden Administration has emboldened and empowered the Houthis and given them a free pass. The Biden Administration has completely reversed the former administration’s firm policy on the Houthis in the Yemeni civil war.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo designated Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, also known as Ansarallah, as a “foreign terrorist organization” in January 2021. The move was intended to hold the terror group accountable, as Pompeo clarified:

A federal court on Thursday ruled that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) cannot classify bump stocks as machine guns.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit further indicated that the federal ban on bump stocks, which are devices that can increase the rate of fire for semi-automatic weapons, is likely unlawful and should be placed on hold. The ban on the devices was implemented following the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting that left 58 people dead after the suspect used bump stocks.

The Department of Justice issued the 2017 ATF rule “to clarify that [bump stocks] are ‘machineguns’ as defined by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968” as these devices “allow a shooter of a semiautomatic firearm to initiate a continuous firing cycle with a single pull of the trigger.”

But, according to the ruling this week, the appeals court said that such changes in criminal law are up to Congress, not the executive branch.

  24. South Dakota Governor Signs Bills to Protect Gun Rights

Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed into law three bills concerning gun ownership and the use of deadly force earlier this week, fortifying Second Amendment protections for gun owners in the state.

The laws include restrictions for gun seizure and fee reductions for concealed-carry permits, as well as clarification for the use of deadly force for self-defense—also known as the “stand your ground” law.

“A person is justified in using or threatening to use deadly force if the person reasonably believes that using or threatening to use deadly force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself, herself, or another, or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony,” reads House Bill 1212.

“A person who uses or threatens to use deadly force in accordance with this section does not have a duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground, if the person using or threatening to use the deadly force is (1) Not engaged in a criminal activity; and (2) In a place where the person has a right to be,” the legislation states.

The state GOP’s move to fortify the Second Amendment comes in the wake of recent shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, and Boulder, Colorado, that have prompted fresh calls from gun control activists for more restrictions.

Two of former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s relatives filed a $75 million defamation lawsuit against CNN on Thursday.

Flynn’s brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Leslie Flynn, sued the network in U.S. District Court in New York City for allegedly portraying them and their family as supporters of QAnon, an online conspiracy theory. The Flynns claimed that CNN deceptively edited footage in a Feb. 4 segment on the conspiracy to implicate the Flynn family, according to the Daily Beast. As the outlet reports:

While the mainstream news media continues to shout down anyone raising even the slightest penumbral emanations of possible 2020 election irregularities, and social media giants suspend, and even erase, people for similar “violations of community standards” (whatever that means) — a Supreme Court justice and a Michigan Secretary of State have issued written opinions that refute what every sensible MSNBC viewer desperately wants to believe is true.

State Court of Claims Judge Christopher Murray ruled that Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s guidance to Michigan clerks in early October was invalid. Benson instructed the clerks to presume the accuracy of absentee ballot signatures. Benson did not go through the proper rule-making process when issuing the guidance. Murray has ruled Benson’s actions unlawful, stating that Benson’s orders went, “beyond the realm of mere advice and direction, and instead is a substantive directive that adds to the pertinent signature-matching standards.”

  27. Sen. Marco Rubio: ‘There’s Stuff Flying Over Military Installations, and Nobody Knows What It Is’

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told a reporter this week that he is concerned about UFOs, or unidentified flying objects, flying over U.S. military bases.

When asked about UFOs at the Reagan National Airport near Washington, Rubio said, “There’s stuff flying over military installations, and nobody knows what it is and it isn’t ours.” Rubio is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and was its chairman before Democrats took over this year. “It’s common sense, right?” he asked.

It comes as the Pentagon and intelligence agencies are slated to release a report about UFOs in June.

The TMZ reporter then asked the Republican senator about whether aliens from outer space or the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) pose a larger threat to the United States.

  28. H&M Stores Shuttered in China as Backlash Over Xinjiang Grows

Hennes & Mauritz AB stores in some parts of China are being closed by their landlords as fallout from the fashion retailer’s statement about forced labor in the contentious region of Xinjiang continues to spread.

At least six stores in the lower-tiered cities of Urumqi, Yinchuan, Changchun and Lianyunang have been shut down by the owners of the properties, according to mall operators in those areas who were contacted by Bloomberg. Local media have reported more closures, with pictures showing H&M’s brand billboards being removed.

The closures come amid rising outcry and calls for a boycott on Chinese social media against an undated H&M statement over its website that expressed concern about reports of forced labor in the far west region. While the statement — blasted by the Communist Youth League and the People’s Liberation Army on social media — appeared to have been removed from the website of the Swedish multinational as of Friday, a separate link on its homepage expressing the same stance on Xinjiang cotton was still active.

Some of the mall operators said the decision to shutter was made by the landlords because of disrespect shown by H&M toward China. There is no indication of the length of the closures.
The global clothing retailer’s outlets have also vanished on Apple Maps and Baidu Maps searches. H&M had said in the statement that it’s “deeply concerned by reports from civil society organizations and media that include accusations of forced labor and discrimination of ethnoreligious minorities.”

Heightened tensions | Turkish-backed mosque reignites French concerns over radical Islam

Top French minister has described the country’s plan to fund a Turkish-linked mosque in France as ‘foreign interference’

    • Row erupts in France over plans to use state funds to build Strasbourg mosque

A row has erupted in France over plans to build a mosque in Strasbourg, with the interior ministry on Wednesday accusing the municipal authorities there of using public money to fund “foreign meddling” on French soil.

[…]On Monday, municipal officials in Strasbourg, run by a Green mayor, approved a grant of 2.5 million euros (nearly $3 million) to the Milli Gorus Islamic Confederation (CMIG), a pan-European movement for the Turkish diaspora.

But the CMIG is one of three Muslim confederations in France that have refused to sign a new anti-extremism charter championed by Macron.

[…]Macron warned against Turkish meddling in France’s presidential elections next year, in an interview broadcast Tuesday.

French government ‘intimidating’ Muslims over Strasbourg mosque

Emmanual Macron’s government ramps up anti-Muslim rhetoric as presidential elections approach.

France’s right-wing Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has a new target in his ongoing crusade against the country’s Muslims.

The latest anti-Muslim controversy whipped up by Darmanin relates to a planned mosque construction underway in northwestern France.

On Monday this week municipal officials in the city of Strasbourg, run by a Green mayor Jeanne Barseghian, approved a grant of almost $3 million to the Milli Gorus Islamic Confederation (CMIG), a pan-European Islamic charity.

That was enough for France’s Darmanin to rail on Twitter that the city’s mayor was supporting what he called “political Islam” and worse, that the CMIG had refused to sign the controversial Charter of Imams.

[…]Under the Concordat in Alsace-Moselle the region is governed by a set of laws dating to 1801 which allows regional authorities to fund religious activities and makes religious education in schools compulsory.

While the rest of France abrogated the Concordat in 1905, originally signed under the Napoleonic period, the region of Strasbourg was under German control at that time.

[…]France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen is ahead in the polls for the 2022 presidential elections, and almost 60 percent of French people disapprove of the job Macron is doing.
