Reader’s Links for March 26, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. 13-year old girl: “…I have a feeling progressivism advanced with money printing…”

That’s a pretty good intuitive understanding. Conversely, a much older, successful acquaintance comes to me the other day–a wealthy person–to ask about precious metals. I tell her the Fed”s flattened yield curve will exacerbate inflation. She nods in understanding telling me she is a sophisticated money manager, but subsequently takes no action. This says to me everything she sees in the world worries her enough to approach me, yet in the end does not amount to an existential set of conditions. Ok. That’s her call. But don’t come crying when inflation steals your cash, which has begun. A negative yield is the coupon value minus inflation. The real inflation, not the bogus CPI numbers the government tells us. Therefore real yields are negative. Over 1 hour long interview:

  2. Think I’ll change my name to They. They is everywhere. We hear They did this or that. They are responsible for our lot. And I will name my budgie They.

They are rich and powerful. I wish I were They, except I don’t like them. They are very, very bad people. They have money and power but no integrity.

My Russki friend told me a story yesterday about how she didn’t get out much when she was a teenager. She was too poor back in Belarus to buy a fancy skirt to go to the disco with friends. Then, when she was 17, she went to work in a clothing store for the sole reason of getting closer to the clothes she couldn’t afford. Her appearance made her so shy, she said.

Well, it worked. Employees got a break on these latest Western European fashions. Soon she was able to go out and have fun.

Her story reminded me of commercial bankers and their proximity to central banks. They are the first and greatest beneficiaries of money printing. A fine metaphor, I thought.

Caveat to begin with: this is information about the situation, not a prediction. It’s about points to bear in mind. The situation is unusual, so it merits the consideration of unusual possibilities. But laying them out is a thinking aid, not – again – a prediction or assessment of any kind.

This will be brief and to the point, largely because there isn’t time to make it longer.

The current situation is that the ship’s bow is still stuck in the canal embankment. Attempts to fully refloat her have been unsuccessful. A massive dredging operation is underway now to prepare for refloating.

The opinion of an expert from the Netherlands is that Ever Given can’t be refloated without removing some of her cargo, an assessment that confirms my own fears. The time to free the ship and clear the canal is being given as “days or weeks.”

    • Dutch salvage firm says Suez ship move could take ‘weeks’

The recovery of a huge container vessel that is blocking the Suez Canal could take “days or weeks”, said the head of a Dutch salvage firm that has sent experts to help with the task.

A team from Smit Salvage was due to arrive on Thursday at the scene where the MV Ever Given ran aground in a sandstorm, said Peter Berdowski, CEO of its parent company Boskalis. “It’s really a heavy whale on the beach, so to speak,” Berdowski told the Dutch TV news programme Nieuwsuur late Wednesday, when asked about the challenges of moving the vessel. “I don’t want to speculate, but it can take days or weeks.”

Egypt has suspended navigation through one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes due to the trapped ship, while the vessel’s Japanese owners said they were facing “extreme difficulty” refloating it.

Berdowski said the team heading to the site would assess a number of factors when deciding how best to move the 400-metre (1,300-foot) Panama-flagged ship. “We are looking at how much oil it contains, how much water — these are complex calculations,” he said.

Smit Salvage, which was bought by Boskalis in 2010, has worked on some of the most high-profile salvage operations in recent years, including the wrecks of Russian nuclear submarine Kursk and Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia.

The firm says it has “emergency response bases” in Rotterdam, Houston, Cape Town and Singapore, and deals salvaging ships, recovering wrecks, and also pumping out hazardous substances from grounded boats.

CNN – Suez Canal authorities need to remove up to 706,000 cubic feet of sand to free the Ever Given

Up to 20,000 cubic meters (706,000 cubic feet) of sand in the Suez Canal need to be removed to free the gigantic container ship that has been stuck there since Tuesday, according to the canal authorities.

The Ever Given, a container ship almost as long as the Empire State Building is tall, ran aground in the Egyptian canal after being caught in 40-knot winds and a sandstorm that caused low visibility and poor navigation.

It has blocked one of the world’s busiest waterways, prompting frantic salvage efforts including the use of two dredgers, nine tug boats and four diggers on the canal bank.
Dredgers are hard at work removing sand and mud from the bow of the ship — and they will need to move between 15,000 to 20,000 cubic meters (530,000 to 706,000 cubic feet) of sand in order to reach a depth of 12 to 16 meters (39 to 52 feet), which could allow the ship to float, the SCA said on Thursday. That’s approximately eight times the size of an Olympic swimming pool.

[…]Shipping experts remain concerned about the situation, with a CEO of a salvage company saying that the ship was “stuck rock solid.”

“Fortunately, the ship is in good shape, undamaged, so that is an important basic condition,” Peter Berdowski, CEO of Boskalis, told Dutch television on Thursday.
“But the first impression is also that it is stuck rock solid.”

    • Maritime traffic jam grows outside blocked Suez Canal

[…]One salvage expert said freeing the cargo ship, the Ever Given, could take up to a week in the best-case scenario and warned of possible structural problems on the vessel as it remains wedged.

[…]An initial investigation showed the vessel ran aground due to strong winds and ruled out mechanical or engine failure as a cause, the company said. GAC, a global shipping and logistics company, had previously said the ship had experienced a power blackout, but it did not elaborate.

Bernhard Schulte said two canal pilots had been aboard the ship when it got stuck. Such an arrangement is customary, but the ship’s captain retains ultimate authority over the vessel, according to shipping experts.

In addition to the over 200 vessels waiting near the canal, more than 100 ships were en route to the waterway, according to the data firm Refinitiv.

[…] the clock is also ticking structurally for the vessel, he added.

“The longer it takes, the worse the condition of the ship will become, because she’s slowly sagging,” said Sloane, vice president of the International Salvage Union. “So ships are designed to flex, but not to be kept at that position with a full load of cargo for weeks at a time. So it’s not an easy situation.”

[…]The Ever Given was involved in an accident in northern Germany in 2019, when it ran into a small ferry moored on the Elbe River in Hamburg. No passengers were on the ferry at the time and there were no injuries, but it was seriously damaged.

Hamburg prosecutors opened an investigation of the Ever Given’s captain and pilot on suspicion of endangering shipping traffic, but shelved it in 2020 for lack of evidence, spokeswoman Liddy Oechtering told The Associated Press.

Oechtering also could not say what the investigation had determined the cause of the crash was, but officials at the time suggested that strong winds may have blown the slow moving cargo ship into the ferry.

    • the guardian – At least 20 livestock ships caught in Suez canal logjam

Concerns for animals’ welfare if Ever Given blockage crisis is protracted

At least 20 of the boats delayed due to a stricken container ship in the Suez canal are carrying livestock, according to marine tracking data, raising concerns about the welfare of the animals if the logjam becomes protracted.

The 220,000-ton Ever Given is causing the longest closure of the Suez canal in decades with more than 200 ships estimated to be unable to pass, and incoming vessels diverting around southern Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.

Georgios Hatzimanolis, a spokesperson for the tracking website Marine Traffic, said while some livestock ships were waiting to enter the canal, three – the Omega Star, the Unimar and the Sea Star – “all appear to be stuck at various points in the canal”. Marine Traffic data showed 11 delayed livestock ships, while an NGO has identified others, bringing the total identified so far to 20.

Five of the ships identified had loaded animals in Spain, and nine had loaded in Romania earlier this month, according to the NGO Animals International.

Gerit Weidinger, EU coordinator for Animals International, said data from marine tracking websites indicated the Unimar left Spain on 15 March bound for Jeddah. The Omega Star left Spain, she said, on 16 March bound for Port Said.

There were no immediate welfare concerns for the animals, but if the Ever Given has to be lightened to make it easier to dislodge, using cranes to remove enough containers could take weeks and the surrounding ships would need to leave and find longer alternative routes.

The nearby ports of Said and Suez could be used to reload fodder if supplies run low, though the process may not be straightforward with so many ships in the queue.

Thousands of cattle have already been slaughtered this year because of delays at sea.

Two ships, the Karim Allah and the Elbeik, were forced to spend months away from port because their original destination refused to accept the animals due to a health paperwork dispute that raised fears the cattle could be carrying the bovine disease bluetongue. The dispute ignited a chain of events that saw both vessels eventually return to Spain.

The animals on board the ships returned in such a poor condition Spanish authorities ordered them to be slaughtered in the port of Cartagena. More than 850 cattle on the Karim Allah were slaughtered earlier in March, while the Elbeik slaughter is ongoing with an estimated 360 of the almost 1,800 who commenced the journey culled as of Thursday.

Weidinger said she was concerned if the crisis became protracted the animals’ welfare could become an issue.

“My greatest fear is that animals run out of food and water and they get stuck on the ships because they cannot be unloaded somewhere else for paperwork reasons,” she said.

“Getting stuck on board means there is a risk [for the animals] of starvation, dehydration, injuries, waste buildup so they can’t lie down, and nor can the crew get rid of dead animal bodies in the [Suez] canal. It’s basically a ticking biohazard timebomb for animals and the crew and any person involved,” she said.

Asked about the ships with Spanish-origin livestock on board, the Spanish agriculture ministry said on Thursday: “We cannot tell you anything about these ships, but due to the blockage of the Suez canal as a result of the grounding of the cargo ship, the Spanish administration has given orders that no animal transport ships bound for Saudi Arabia and Jordan should be loaded until the canal can be navigated normally.”

Romanian agriculture and veterinary authorities have yet to comment.

  15. DAILY MAIL – Egyptian doctor, 34, is ‘beaten and thrown to her death from sixth floor balcony by her landlord, doorman and neighbor in honor killing for inviting a male colleague to her flat’

Female doctor, 34, fell to her death from her Cairo apartment two weeks ago
Landlord, doorman, and neighbour accused of carrying out an ‘honour killing’
The trio allegedly broke into her home, beat her and then threw her to her death
Men were angry she invited a male colleague to her flat, local media reported

A female doctor has been beaten and thrown to her death from her apartment in Egypt in a so-called honour killing after she invited a male colleague back to the flat.

The 34-year-old, who has not been publicly identified, plunged to her death from her apartment balcony in Cairo two weeks ago, local media reported.

Three men – her landlord, doorman and neighbour – have now been arrested amid an investigation into her death.

The trio are accused of breaking into the apartment and beating her because she had spent time alone with a male colleague.

Strict social codes in Egypt mean it is considered deeply shameful for a woman to be alone with an unrelated man, though the law does not expressly forbid it.

The men have not yet been charged, according to The New Arab, as police continue to investigate the case.

Reports of the attack vary, with some saying the woman was pushed to her death while others say she fell while being attacked.

The landlord has reportedly denied all wrongdoing, saying the woman killed herself during a ‘psychological crisis’.

Women’s rights activists have called for the men to be punished, and condemned ongoing discrimination against women in Egypt.

The killing comes just weeks after Egyptian politicians put forward a series of new laws that would curtail the rights of women, sparking outrage.

The proposed laws – amendments to the country’s Personal Status Law – would mean women are unable to sign marriage contracts, and that a male relative must approve of their match before it can become legal.

Men would also be able to annul a marriage without consulting their wives, would be given priority over women in terms of child custody.

Men would have the sole right to register a child’s birth, obtain identity documents for them, and choose their education.

The law would also give men the power to stop women from travelling without their permission, even if for work.

Activists condemned the bill, which they said takes the country back ‘200 years.’

UN figures compiled in 2013 found that 99 per cent of women in Egypt had suffered some form of sexual harassment, while nearly half experienced domestic violence.

Egyptian laws do not explicitly criminalize domestic violence or martial rape, meaning that women who report such crimes are often ignored, the report added.

Support services for victims are almost non-existent, UN investigators said, while ‘discriminatory’ divorce laws make it almost impossible for women to escape abusive relationships.

  17. new york post – George Floyd’s toxicology report pinned to Black History Month display at Duke

Duke University is investigating how a printout of George Floyd’s toxicology report, with comments insinuating his death was related to drugs, ended up pinned to a Black History Month bulletin board display on campus, according to the school and reports.

The flier was found Saturday pinned to a display honoring black victims of police violence and was inscribed with handwritten remarks in pink pen that said: “Mix of drugs presents in difficulty breathing! Overdose? Good Man? Use of fake currency is a felony!”

Floyd — who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes — had allegedly used a counterfeit $20 bill at a Minneapolis store before his death. The incident sparked massive anti-racism protests across the country.

Originally, the Hennepin County medical examiner announced Floyd, 46, had “recent methamphetamine use” and “fentanyl intoxication,” as well as hypertension and coronary artery disease, and said they were possible contributing factors to his death.

However, two doctors who conducted an independent autopsy of Floyd said he had no underlying health issues that could have contributed to his death and the cause was asphyxiation.

Matt Mohn, the freshman who found the flier, called the act “audacious” and said the paper was taken down about 30 minutes after he reported it to his resident adviser, KCTV 5 reported, citing CNN.

“All of a sudden, someone comes up and is essentially sticking a thumb in the face of every black person, saying his life didn’t matter, that he wasn’t a good person, because of one $20 bill,” Mohn said.

“I was just really, really surprised by it, that someone would put that much effort into trying to strip someone of their humanity for no reason.”

Another freshman, who is black, saw a photo of the flier and said he was “honestly terrified.”

“That happened right down the hall from where I sleep, from where I’m supposed to be safe,” Michael Manns said.

“The thought that it could be someone I’ve lived with all these months really terrified me.”

In a letter to the student body, Duke said the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Office for Institutional Equity, and the Duke University Police Department are probing the incident and asked anyone with information to come forward.

The letter said if Duke students are found to be responsible for the flier, sanctions will be issued.

“Any incident that is motivated in whole or part by an individual’s race, warrants ‘acceleration’ or elevation of sanctioning due to the impact on the community,” the letter stated.

“If the investigation does not identify a responsible student, we will inform the community of that outcome on or before April 15 as part of our monthly conduct update. We are also working closely with our Campus Life departments to provide direct outreach to Black-identified students. Additional support resources available to all students are included below the signature of this message.”

Herold and Dougherty also said Alissa purchased a Ruger AR-556 pistol, a weapon that resembles a semi-automatic rifle, legally six days before the attack. Alissa did not use another handgun also in his possession, they said.

Alissa made his first court appearance on Thursday. He is being held without bail and is due to undergo a mental health examination. Dougherty said additional first-degree attempted murder charges would be filed against Alissa in the coming weeks.

Where are the fact-checkers protecting us from fake news and misinformation? Nancy Pelosi has made an outrageous claim, asserting an authority that she doesn’t have, to pick and choose who gets seated in the House.

In 2020, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks narrowly defeated Democrat candidate Rita Hart in November by six votes in an election where over 400,000 ballots were cast. Her victory was certified by the state, and she was provisionally seated by Congress. But the Democrats’ razor-thin majority in the House has Nancy Pelosi trying desperately to pad her majority any way she can, even if that means stealing an election from the duly elected Republican, Miller-Meeks.
