Reader’s Links for March 21, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

The pandemic didn’t cause the huge increase in the murder rate

Dumpster fires set by anarchist/black bloc groups in “CHOP/CHAZ” area (Capitol Hill) of Seattle in Sep 2020. YouTube video

The murder rate rose 30% last year in America’s major cities, after the number of people in America’s prisons and jails dropped by 14% from 2019 to mid-2020. But progressive politicians and professors don’t want to admit that letting criminals out of jail can lead to more crime.

Instead, they blame it on the global COVID-19 pandemic — without pointing to any global increase in the murder rate. On Twitter, Professor Shon Hopwood suggested the rise in America’s murder rate was due to the “global pandemic, reduced economic opportunity, and the most contentious presidential election of the past 30 years.” Hopwood is a convicted bank robber who spent time in prison, and dislikes keeping people in jail.

In reality, murder rates fell in much of the world during the pandemic. As InSight Crime notes, “It’s too early to tell with any degree of certainty how exactly the pandemic may have impacted levels of violence, but there were notable developments, including significant reductions in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Venezuela, historically some of the most homicidal nations in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

  8. Carbon pawprint: Is man’s best friend the planet’s enemy?

Study claims US pets account for 64 million tons of C02 emissions annually; but some experts aren’t convinced

Meat eaten by average dog has twice the carbon footprint as driving an SUV 10,000km

Is your adorable puppy as bad for the planet as a gas-guzzling SUV?

While the precise carbon pawprint of our pets is the source of scientific debate, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: lovable, they may be, cats and dogs have an impact on the planet.

In their 2009 book Time to Eat the Dog?, Brenda and Robert Vale sparked anger among pet owners for saying that the meat eaten by an average canine companion had twice the carbon footprint as driving an SUV 10,000 kilometres.

A decade on, the verdict is still out on the planetary impact linked to the diets of cats and dogs.

“I’ve got nothing against pets,” said Gregory Okin, a professor at the University of California’s Institute of Environment and Sustainability.

“I know that they bring a lot of good to people, both working animals and companion animals.

“But, I believe that for people who want to make informed choices, they should have the information available to them,” he told AFP.

In a 2017 study, Okin estimated that the 160 million domestic cats and dogs in the US were responsible for between 25% and 30% of the environmental impact of meat consumed in the country.

That’s 64 million tonnes of C02, equivalent to the annual emissions of 13 million petrol or diesel cars.

Kelly Swanson, a professor in animal nutrition at the University of Illinois, disputes the findings of that study, saying the calculations were based on “a lot of inaccurate assumptions”.

“Because most pet foods are based on secondary products from the human food industry, especially the ingredients that are animal-based, the environmental costs of those ingredients are not the same as those being consumed by humans,” he told AFP.

For Sebastien Lefebvre, from Lyon’s VetAgro-Sup veterinary school, carbon emissions from conventional mass-produced animal food was “negligible”.

He said emissions from pet food would only be a concern “when mankind stops food waste (and becomes) completely vegetarian.”

He said that unfashionable cuts of meat, including offal, which many humans turn their noses up at, would be ideal for pet food in order to avoid waste.

Yet in some countries, including the Netherlands, meat is reared specifically for animal consumption.

    Geography matters

Pim Martens, professor of sustainable development at Maastricht University, said that — as with humans — animal carbon footprints “depend on where you live in the world”.

In a 2019 study, Martens found the lifetime emissions of a dog weighing 10-20 kilogrammes in the Netherlands was anywhere between 4.2 and 17 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

For the same dog living in China, emissions were between 3.7 and 19.1 tonnes. In Japan, however, the same dog would be expected to produce 1.5 to 9.9 tonnes during its life.

Ten tonnes of CO2 is roughly the same as the emissions produced by two cars every year.

But Martens said he doesn’t find that comparison useful.

“Would that mean that if you don’t own a dog or a cat you can drive an SUV or drive more in your car? It doesn’t make any sense.”

But scientists can agree on at least one thing: a large dog, logically, eats more than a small cat and therefore has a bigger environmental impact.

    Get a bird instead?

So what can the environmentally conscious animal lovers out there do to mitigate the damage caused by their furry friends?

Okin suggests considering other species of animals to have as pets, such as hamsters or birds.

“Maybe from the ecological pawprint point of view, everyone should get a lizard or a big spider” instead of a dog, said Martens.

“But if you don’t want to have an ecological pawprint, don’t have a pet at all.”

One solution for animals and the planet would be to cut down or diversify the protein in their diet.

Several dried food producers already use insects in their kibble, although there is still debate over the environmental merits of various animal foods and their production.

Lefebvre said “it’s not impossible, theoretically” to turn your pet dog vegetarian, under supervision from your vet.

But there’s one environmental impact from outdoor cats he said he knows can’t be avoided.

“A massacre all around your home: dead birds, shrews, lizards…”

  11. RT – Parody video showing Trump knocking Biden down Air Force One stairs could lead to ASSASSINATION attempt, MSNBC analyst says

MSNBC regular Malcolm Nance has suggested that Donald Trump Jr. tweeting a parody video of his father using a golf ball to make Joe Biden fall on the steps to Air Force One “mainstreams the potential for danger.”

[…]Donald Trump Jr. was one of many users to share the video on Twitter, and a number of people believe this could somehow have real consequences.

[…]Appearing on the ‘Dean Obeidallah Show,’ author and MSNBC analyst Malcolm Nance – who has claimed Trump is an “asset” of Russia and even suggested that the terrorist group ISIS suicide bomb a Trump property in Istanbul – hinted the sharing of the video increases the chance of potential violence.

“It’s dangerous because what he does is he makes light of the potential of injuring people,” Nance said, going on to claim he regularly monitors the public communications of “right wing extremists” and predicting how they could be responding to the short clip.

“Some of the forums that are prevalent are gun forums, and let me tell you, you want to see some seething hotbeds of violence, you know, potential violence, and some of these people have long range shooting skills,” Nance said. “And this is the sort of thing that they would, you know, they would see that video and it would turn into a discussion of whether they use a 338 Lapua [long range rifle] or whether they use 50 caliber BMG to get that shot, right?”

[…]Trump Jr. has already been pushing back against media coverage of the video he shared, blasting media outlets for needing to label it “edited” when the content should make that clear.

“Wait you’re telling me this is edited??? I’m sorry, I had no idea I was spreading this kind of gross disinformation,” he shot back at a headline from the Hill on Saturday.

Peter Daszak, an American investigator on the World Health Organization’s recent mission to China, has repeatedly hyped Chinese state-run media outlets on Twitter.

The promotion of outlets that function as part of the Chinese government’s self-avowed “propaganda” campaign further calls into question Daszak’s impartiality as a World Health Organization (WHO) investigator.

The outlet Daszak most heavily shares and praises is China Global Television Network (CGTN) – described by the Freedom House think tank as “a long-standing weapon in Beijing’s arsenal of repression” whose “mission is to attack designated enemies of the Communist Party.”

Daszak has praised CGTN hosts as “sharp,” interviews as “fantastic” and “honest,” and programming as “great“:

    What does China really want?

Well, China really wants to rule planet Earth. It also wants to possess and rule the near portions of the solar system. No, I am not exaggerating. No nation in history has been this ambitious.

With regard to our planet, Xi Jinping wants the world to reject the current Westphalian international system, in place since 1648. In its place, he wants China’s imperial-era system, where Chinese emperors believed they not only had the right to rule tianxia, all under heaven, but also the heavens compelled them to do so.

Xi has been grabbing territory from his neighbors. In just the past few months, the Chinese have been encroaching on India’s Sikkim as well as Nepalese territory.

With regard to Nepal, let us talk about how China actually moves against its neighbors. In January, Beijing’s propagandists, as they have in the past, bragged about how Chinese scientists were able to come up with the exact measurement of a mountain in Nepal. Not in China, in Nepal.

  16. Haifa Bay of Pigs

While the northern capital’s municipality argues with the Nature and Parks Authority over who is responsible for dealing with the local hog problem, experts say the number of boars in the city will double within a year if they are not removed

Seeing a lone boar strutting along the streets of the northern city of Haifa used to be a rare sight, but today these roaming rogues have become a common and growing problem.

According to Haifa’s residents, herds of wild boar can often be seen roaming the city’s streets, wreaking havoc and destroying property, and in some rare cases even turning hostile and attacking people.

Unlike her predecessors who chose to cull the boar population through hunting, Haifa’s current mayor Einat Kalisch-Rotem decided to solve the problem with non-lethal means. She has opted to deny the pigs any sources of food and water in the city, such as reinforcing trash cans to prevent the animals from reaching the discarded food inside.
These measures have not found favor with some local officials who say they are useless.

“All of these steps are like performing acupuncture on a dead body,” says Haifa municipal member Itzik Balas.

“There is a group of boar fans in Haifa, and they are sweeping the mayor along in their wake.…

  17. Iran, Russia and Turkey signal growing alliance

[…] The messaging from Ankara is that Russia and Turkey are growing together as allies and partners. They work together in Syria, Libya and the Caucasus; their goal is to supplant US influence and divide up many areas of the Middle East between themselves.

They seek to control violence in these areas. For instance, Turkey got the Syrian rebels, who were fighting the Russian-backed Syrian regime, to change their course and fight Kurds so the Syrian regime could prosper. Then Turkey shipped the rebels to fight elsewhere to weaken the rebellion. Ten years after the start of the Syrian conflict, it is mostly Turkey that is responsible for sidelining the rebellion.

    Now, enter Iran.…

Turkey wants more trade with Iran via rail links and also wants to work with Tehran in other ways. From Russia, Ankara wants more S-400s and military hardware.

For many years, Ankara would say one thing to Moscow and Tehran about partnership while telling Washington’s Iran hawks that it was “against Russia and Iran.”

Turkey would mobilize its strong DC lobbyists to push narratives from how Ankara was “fighting terrorism” to how it was challenging Russia and Iran “geopolitically.”
However, the reality was that Turkey was always working closely with Russia and Iran.

  18. New Alliances Link Gulf States to the Eastern Mediterranean

New economic and security alliances are emerging in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean, tying Arab states to Greece, Cyprus and Israel, with potentially transformative effects on both regions. The relationships are based on rapidly converging interests – among them, tensions between these countries and regional powers Iran and Turkey – and undergirded by energy and security partnerships.…

The threat of Iran helped the UAE and Bahrain overcome their longstanding hostility toward Israel, leading to the Abraham Accords. Greece is not in the same neighborhood as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, but the three countries share a wariness of Turkish ambitions in their respective backyards, and are seeking closer security ties. Emirati and Saudi jets have joined Greek military drills.…

For the U.S. and Europe, these groupings represent new opportunities as well as new challenges. Cooperation between Israel and Arab states, for instance, may reduce the security burden on American shoulders, but their combined opposition to a nuclear accommodation with Iran will also greatly complicate President Joe Biden’s efforts to resume diplomacy with the Islamic Republic.…

  19. Dysfunctional elections systems? Horrid!

Israel’s election is heading toward a deadlock, final polls predict

The final polls conducted until the Friday before Election Day on Tuesday, March 23, all suggested continued political deadlock, as neither the anti- nor the pro-Netanyahu blocs are expected to receive 61 seats in order to form a government.

Naftali Bennett’s Yamina Party, however, which is currently not committed to either bloc, could give the anti-Netanyahu parties a coalition. The final poll … gave Netanyahu’s Likud Party 31 seats, followed by Yesh Atid with 19 seats, New Hope and Yamina tied for the third largest party with nine seats each, and the Joint List is stable at eight.

The ultra-Orthodox Shas Party also has eight, while United Torah Judaism (UTJ) and Yisrael Beytenu have seven seats each.

Labor and the Religious Zionist Party received five seats each, while Blue and White, Meretz and Ra’am crossed the electoral threshold with four seats each.

[T]he anti-Netanyahu bloc would have 56 seats, while the pro-Netanyahu bloc would receive 51 seats. Yamina and Ra’am, which have both not declared support for either bloc, hold the balance of power. Yamina’s nine seats could give the anti-Netanyahu bloc a coalition, and together with Ra’am, they could both give one to the pro bloc.

Anti-Netanyahu bloc wins only 55-57 seats in all five polls; uncommitted Yamina could give it a coalition.

    https://nltimes.nl/2021/03/21/activists-replace-street-signs-educate-people-netherlands-colonial-past
Action groups against racism put up new street signs in various cities in the south of the Netherlands on Sunday. The streets currently bear the names of “criminals from the colonial era of the Netherlands”, according to the action groups. Sunday is International Day against Racism.
The names of the old “sea villains” have been replaced by heroes from the present time, among others.
Local activists from Den Bosch, Breda, Nijmegen, Sittard-Geleen, Maastricht, Heerlen, Venlo, Weert, Roermond and Eindhoven participated in the campaign. The activists associated with Kick Out Zwarte Piet also took to the streets to ask residents for their opinion.
“The aim of the action is to make people aware of the Dutch colonial and slavery past and to teach about this past in education,” the activist groups said in a statement published Sunday. “The activists are calling on schools to work on this. They are also calling on municipalities to add captions to street names that tell the real story.”
Photos on Facebook show that street signs such as Jan Pieterszoon Coenstraat, Tromplaan, Jan van Riebeeckstraat, Michiel de Ruyterstraat, Piet Heinstraat and Witte de Withstraat are disgraced. “In the coming weeks, we will be posting educational posts about different people from our past: sea villains and heroes,” announce the action groups.

    https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20210321-france-rescues-72-migrants-stranded-in-english-channel
French maritime authorities said they had rescued 72 migrants in the English Channel on Sunday whose vessels ran into difficulties as they tried to reach the UK.
Early Sunday, the coastguard was alerted that several boats were in trouble off the coast of Calais.
One was picked up by a French patrol boat and the 38 people on board taken to Calais.
Meanwhile, 34 more migrants were rescued by a tugboat operated by the French navy and taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer, also on France’s Channel coast.
All the rescued migrants were in good health and were handed over to rescue services and the border police.
Since late 2018, the number of illegal Channel crossings has risen sharply as migrants try to reach Britain despite dangers linked to busy shipping traffic, strong currents and low water temperatures.
In 2020 alone, there were some 9,500 crossings or attempted crossings, according to the coastguard, more than four times the previous year’s number.
Six people died and three went missing trying to cross last year, compared to four dead in 2019.
