Reader’s Links for March 1, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  3. OT but I found it interesting:

    an excerpt:
ONE DAY THIS past fall, I tested out a recent model of the Translator, an instant translation device made by iFlytek, with a man I’ll call Al Cheng. The Translator, a device powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, works offline for major world languages. Cheng and his wife live in a congested city in southern China, but every other year they travel to the Midwest to visit family. To get exercise, they walk half a mile each morning to the mall. But Cheng, who likes to hold forth on art and culture in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Hakka, does not speak any English. Much of the time while in the US, he is unhappily silent. He is exactly the sort of person who needs a Translator.

I met Cheng one morning in the mall’s central atrium, near an antique Chevrolet pickup truck that held hay and flowers. (“Chrysanthemums,” Cheng noted, approvingly.) When I told him the price of the Translator (around $400), he was skeptical. “Too expensive,” he said, shaking his head. But as we sat down outside Caribou Coffee to play around with it, his skepticism gave way to admiration. We held the device alongside the Baidu Translate app on his phone, taking turns speaking phrases in various languages in an attempt to stump it. In Mandarin, the Translator understood that Cheng’s accented “mingnisuda” was Minnesota. It got my name, despite Cheng pronouncing it “Mala.” When I spoke English, both translation tools could handle the metaphor “I’m feeling blue,” but only the Translator got that “I got up on the wrong side of the bed” was about my mood, not where I placed my feet. The most magical moment came when Cheng recited a couplet from the eighth-century poet Zhang Jiuling. Baidu translated the lines, nonsensically, as “At sea, the moon and the moon are at this time.” The Translator offered up an accurate and genuinely poetic translation:

As the bright moon shines over the sea; / From far away you share this moment with me.

When Cheng switched to Cantonese, the results were more mixed. (The Translator understood an idiom for the “English language” as “chicken farm.”) But the mere fact that the device supported the language impressed him.

When I spoke English, both Baidu Translate and iFlytek’s Translator could handle the metaphor “I’m feeling blue,” but only the Translator got that “I got up on the wrong side of the bed” was about my mood, not where I placed my feet.

iFlytek’s translation mission goes far beyond helping travelers, business people, and urban elites. It has developed products for ethnic minorities and people in rural areas where many people do not speak Mandarin, and it is constantly improving its handling of dialects. In 2017 it launched what it calls the Dialect Protection Plan. When I first came across a news report about it, I laughed out loud at the Orwellian name. The Chinese Communist Party has spent decades attacking language noun by noun, verb by verb—censoring terms it deems dangerous, undermining dialects and minority languages, and bludgeoning Mandarin with ideological drivel. (The Chinese cultural critic Li Tuo dubbed such clunky phrasing Maospeak, in reference to the Newspeak of 1984.) Tech companies have aided in the assault on language.

An iFlytek spokesperson said in an email that the goal of the company’s work on dialects was to “protect our ways of communication.” iFlytek has devoted special attention to Uighur and Tibetan, which are spoken by ethnic minorities that have been singled out for persecution by Beijing. China Daily reported that in one promotion for the Dialect Protection Plan, executives encouraged users of iFlytek Input to record themselves speaking their native language, in exchange for a chance to win an iPhone.

“A mob of between 30 and 40 alleged far-left anarchist militants attacked a police patrol in the Leipzig district of Connewitz, well-known as a hub of far-left extremist activity.

The police officers were called to the area after reports that garbage bins had been set on fire at the Herderpark at around 1:15 am on early Sunday morning and when they arrived on the scene they were set upon by a mob of dozens of people.

“When police officers arrived at the scene, their patrol car was pelted with bottles by a group of about 30 to 40 people,” a police spokeswoman told German tabloid Bild.

According to the newspaper, the attackers fled the area in different directions following the attack and an investigation has been launched.

While the tabloid referred to the attackers as “anarchists,” local police say they are still investigating potential political motives for the attack on the officers.

The Connewitz area has been a hub of far-left extremism for years and has seen repeated incidents of vandalism and violent attacks by far-left militants, often with police officers being targetted.”

He said: “You know my policy. Iran is Israel’s biggest enemy.

“I am determined to fend it off. We are striking at it all over the region.”

The Iranian government soon responded, accusing Israel of being the biggest threat to regional stability.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Tehran said: “We strongly reject this accusation.

“The Zionist regime knows very well that our response to our security issues and areas is always firm and precise.”

Although denied by the Iranian government, Israel claimed limpet mines had been used on the vessel.

  7. Report: US wasted billions on cars, buildings in Afghanistan (abcnews, Mar 1, 2021)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/report-us-wasted-billions-cars-buildings-afghanistan-76176528

“The United States wasted billions of dollars in war-torn Afghanistan on buildings and vehicles that were either abandoned or destroyed, according to a report released Monday by a U.S. government watchdog.

The agency said it reviewed $7.8 billion spent since 2008 on buildings and vehicles. Only $343.2 million worth of buildings and vehicles “were maintained in good condition,” said the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, which oversees American taxpayer money spent on the protracted conflict.

The report said that just $1.2 billion of the $7.8 billion went to pay for buildings and vehicles that were used as intended.

“The fact that so many capital assets wound up not used, deteriorated or abandoned should have been a major cause of concern for the agencies financing these projects,” John F. Sopko, the special inspector general, said in his report.

The U.S. public is weary of the nearly 20-year-old war and President Joe Biden is reviewing a peace deal his predecessor, Donald Trump, signed with the Taliban a year ago. He must decide whether to withdraw all troops by May 1, as promised in the deal, or stay and possibly prolong the war. Officials say no decision has been made.

Meanwhile, Taliban insurgents and the Afghan government have been holding on-again-off-again talks in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar but a deal that could bring peace to Afghanistan after 40 years of relentless war seems far off.

Analyst Bill Roggio of the Long War Journal said the findings by SIGAR are not surprising. The reasons for the financial losses include Taliban attacks, corruption and “throwing money at the problem without considering the implications,” he said.

“It is one thing to build a clinic and school, it is another to operate, maintain, and in many cases defend this infrastructure from Taliban attacks,” said Roggio. “Additionally, the West has wildly underestimated the impact of Afghan corruption and in many cases incompetence. It was always a recipe for failure.”

U.S. agencies responsible for construction didn’t even ask the Afghans if they wanted or needed the buildings they ordered built, or if they had the technical ability to keep them running, Sopko said in his report.

The waste occurred in violation of “multiple laws stating that U.S. agencies should not construct or procure capital assets until they can show that the benefiting country has the financial and technical resources and capability to use and maintain those assets effectively,” he said.

Torek Farhadi, a former adviser to the Afghan government, said a “donor-knows-best” mentality often prevailed and it routinely meant little to no consultation with the Afghan government on projects.

He said a lack of coordination among the many international donors aided the wastefulness. For example, he said schools were on occasion built alongside other newly constructed schools financed by other donors. The construction went ahead because once the decision was made — contract awarded and money allocated — the school was built regardless of the need, said Farhadi.

The injection of billions of dollars, largely unmonitored, fueled runaway corruption among both Afghans and international contractors. But experts say that despite the waste, the need for assistance is real, given the Afghan governments heavy dependence on international money.

The worsening security situation in Afghanistan also greatly impeded the monitoring of projects, with shoddy construction going undetected, said Farhadi, the former Afghan government adviser.

“Consult with the locals about their needs and sustainability of the project once the project is complete,” he urged U.S. funding agencies looking to future projects. “Supervise, supervise, supervise project progress and implementation and audit every single layer of expenditure.”

Going forward, Roggio said smaller, more manageable projects should be the order of the day. To build big unmanageable projects that Afghanistan has neither the capacity nor technical expertise for after 40 years of relentless war “feeds into the Taliban narrative that the government is corrupt, incompetent, and incapable of providing for the Afghan people,” he said.”

    • The British always had the right idea about Afghanistan: not even worth the life of a camel let alone a soldier and THE islamic sewer. They stuck their noses in, received one hell of a shock (those red tunics made sniping so easy let alone what the muslim women did to the wounded) and “got the hell out of dodge” and never wasted another penny as should have the west.
But in the corporate west such an intrusion makes more money ALWAYS for someone who already has too much and it is tough that the taxpayers have to continue to do what they do best: pay.

The attack compromised Trump’s reserved account minutes before the President was slated to speak on-stage at CPAC- with the timing suggesting the President may announce he’s joining the free speech social media service.

  9. Ex-French President Sarkozy Sentenced to One Year in Jail on Corruption Charges (sputniknews, Mar 1, 2021)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/202103011082219311-ex-french-president-sarkozy-found-guilty-of-corruption-and-influence-peddling/

“A Paris court has delivered a ruling on the two cases of corruption against the former president opened after his departure from office.

A French court has found former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption for trying to bribe a judge and of influence-peddling, sentencing him to a total of three years in prison, two of which will be suspended. Sarkozy becomes the second president in modern-day French history to be convicted of corruption and the first one to receive real jail time.

Sarkozy has 10 days to appeal the ruling.
The court clarified that Sarkozy will have an opportunity to request home detention with the use of an electronic bracelet. The legal battle is far from over for the ex-president, who held the post between 2007 and 2012, as he is also facing charges of illegally financing his 2012 presidential campaign and will face the court later in March.

    Corruption Charges Against Sarkozy
Prosecutors accused Sarkozy of offering a bribe in the form of lucrative job in Monaco to French judge Gilbert Azibert in exchange for taking a peek into another criminal case against the ex-president.

Under the case Sarkozy was trying to look into in 2014, the ex-president was suspected of receiving illegal donations to his election campaign from L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt based on claims by her former accountant. The ex-president was eventually removed from the list of persons to be charged on the case.

Sarkozy also ended up in prosecutor’s crosshairs after late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, killed by militants with the help of western states including France, claimed that he donated some 50 million euros to the then-French president’s election campaign in 2007 in exchange for favours by Sarkozy. The ex-president was charged in March 2018 with corruption in this case, but has not yet been tried.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pakistani-court-grants-bail-christian-blasphemy-case-76180586

“A Pakistani court on Monday granted bail to a Christian man convicted in 2018 while still a teenager of insulting Islam by posting a picture of Islam’s holiest site on social media, a defense lawyer said.

The court order in the eastern city of Lahore came more than four years after Nabeel Masih was arrested. He was detained after a mob accused him of committing blasphemy by sharing a picture of Kaaba in Mecca on Facebook. He was 16 years old at the time.

According to his lawyer, Naseeb Anjum, Masih was granted bail by the Lahore High Court. It was unclear exactly when Masih would be freed.

Blasphemy has been a contentious issue in Pakistan. Domestic and international human rights groups say blasphemy allegations have often been used to intimidate religious minorities and to settle personal scores.

In 2018, Masih became the youngest blasphemy convict in Pakistan when the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison. Since then, the British Asian Christian Association has been supporting a legal battle for his release.

Anjum said he will try to quickly complete the paperwork to free Masih, now 20 years old. “I will continue this legal fight for his acquittal,” he added.

Ghulam Mustafa Chaudhry, a lawyer for the man who leveled the original accusation against Masih, confirmed that Masih was granted bail, but provided no further details.

Juliet Chowdhry, a trustee of the British Asian Christian Association, said in a statement she was happy Masih would be freed but noted that he “has lost many of his most important years of development.”

Chowdhry said Masih should be compensated for his false conviction to help him restore his life and the organization would pursue this for him. “We call on Christians everywhere to pray for him as we continue the battle,” she said.

A Punjab governor was killed by his own guard in 2011 after he defended a Christian woman, Aasia Bibi, who was accused of blasphemy. She was acquitted after spending eight years on death row and left Pakistan for Canada to join her family after receiving threats.”

    • Only because she resisted arrest. I agree that the reason for such was dubious but resisting just brings out the thug resident, in most police. The best way to annoy them is to say nothing: no name, no address, nothing except “I wish to see a lawyer”.

Iran turned down an offer to engage in direct talks regarding the nation’s nuclear capabilities with U.S. and European diplomats, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Iranian government officials declined an invitation from European Union officials to attend the nuclear talks, which the U.S. had agreed to attend, two senior diplomats familiar with the matter said. Iran reportedly wanted a guarantee that the U.S. would lift some sanctions following the in-person negotiations, which were set to take place this week.

The U.S. previously promised to remove some sanctions if Iran agreed to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement. Former President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018.

  20. English Channel Migrant Numbers Almost Double 2020 Levels (breitbart, Mar 1, 2021)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/03/01/over-500-boat-migrants-have-landed-since-brexit-nearly-doubling-the-number-this-time-last-year/

“Since officially leaving the European Union at the beginning of the year, the number of illegal boat migrants arriving from the continent via the English Channel has continued its record-setting pace, with over 500 illegals being brought ashore in Britain this year.

In February, 308 illegal aliens were recorded to have landed on British shores in 18 separate instances, adding to the 223 who were taken ashore in January.

As the rough and wintery conditions subsided in recent days, the illegal crossings of the Channel have started to spike, with 87 migrants brought ashore on Saturday, alone.

The latest landings mean that there have been 531 migrants officially recorded to have arrived this year, nearly double the number during the same time period last year (279), according to the Daily Mail.

Last year, a record 8,410 illegal boat migrants were officially found to have entered the country, up from 1,850 the year before.

The true number, however, is likely to have been higher, as the Home Office figures did not tally those believed to be under the age of eighteen in the count. The figures also, of course, do not account for those who arrived clandestinely.

On Sunday, BBC reporter Simon Jones disclosed that “the Home Office has tonight refused to say how many migrants – if any – have been returned to EU countries since the start of the year. It says it will write to the Home Affairs Committee with that information.”

In 2020, the number of foreign criminals deported by the Home Office fell by 79 per cent, with only 1,128 criminals successfully deported, down from 5,322 the year before.

Aside from the failure to deport foreign criminals, the Home Office was revealed in December to have lost track of over 37,000 migrants, who either fled from detention centres of skipped bail over the past three decades.

To date, the UK has also failed to secure an agreement with the EU, or indeed any individual member state, on the issue of returning failed asylum seekers.

The UK paid out an additional £28 million to France in November to fund extra security patrols along the coast, on top of the tens of millions already sent to the wealthy European Union nation since 2014.

However, this has failed to meaningfully stop illegal immigration from pouring across the Channel from France.

Despite promises to take back control of the country’s borders following Brexit, the nominally Conservative government has failed to do so and has so far refused to adopt a simple send back the boats approach — as seen to be effective in Australian in the past — rather than taking migrants ashore in the hopes that they will later be deported.

The Home Office trotted out its standard refrain in regards to the latest migrant crossings, saying: “People should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and not risk their lives making these dangerous crossings. We are continuing to pursue the criminals behind these illegal crossings.””

    • Hard to work out what to call whoever allowed this but a traitor idiot will have to do and the penalty should be for treason.

  21. Report: Biden Admin Purging ‘Dangerous’ Trump Supporters From Federal Government: ‘Existential Threat To Democracy’
    Tim Pearce
    4-5 minutes

President Joe Biden is reportedly attempting to sniff out federal bureaucrats installed by and loyal to his predecessor to purge the federal government of Trump supporters.

On his way out, former President Donald Trump appointed dozens of his supporters to government boards and committees, and installed many others in career positions within the federal government. The Biden White House is now working to undo Trump’s work, fearing that those Trump supporters may interfere with Biden’s agenda, according to NBC News.

The practice of outgoing presidents installing a number of their supporters into more permanent posts in the federal government, called “burrowing,” is not new or uncommon. Experts approached by NBC News said that Trump’s burrowed officials are different in number and temperament than previous administrations, calling those Trump supporters “dangerous.”

The military-industrial complex is back in the saddle again.

In December, I wrote an article entitled: “Here We Go: Swamp Rats Start Laying the Groundwork for Sending U.S. Troops Into Syria.” And in January, I wrote an article entitled: “Back to the Endless Wars: US Military Convoy Enters Northeast Syria.” And here we are. CNNreported Friday that “the US military on Thursday struck a site in Syria used by two Iranian-backed militia groups in response to rocket attacks on American forces in the region in the past two weeks. ‘Up to a handful’ of militants were killed in the strikes, a US official told CNN.” There are, of course, no estimates of how many American troops will be killed in Syria pursuing the Biden team’s internationalist agenda.

The self-anointed foreign policy and military experts who are now in charge struck without even knowing exactly whether they were hitting what they wanted to hit. CNN noted that the site of the airstrikes “was not specifically tied to the rocket attacks but Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said he was ‘confident’ it was used by the same Iranian-backed Shia militias that had fired rockets at US and coalition forces.” Well, that’s that, then: the political elites’ foreign policy exponents, from John Kerry to Ben Rhodes, have done so very much to inspire confidence, who could possibly doubt that they know what they’re doing?

  23. Iraqi Militia Says It Reserves Right to Attack US Objects in Country After Airstrike in Syria (sputniknews, Mar 1, 2021)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/202103011082220313-iraqi-militia-says-it-reserves-right-to-attack-us-objects-in-country-after-airstrike-in-syria/

“The US claims its jets raided the facility belonging to Iraqi militants, purportedly responsible for the February rocket attacks against American objects in Iraq, which claimed one life and left several US citizens injured. Washington insists that the attacks were sponsored by Iran.

One of the Iraqi militant groups, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, has said it reserves the right to attack the US installations in the country as a response to Washington’s bombing of the group’s positions in Syria, Nasr al-Shammari, deputy secretary-general of al-Nujaba, told Al-Mayadin TV channel.

Al-Shammari noted that his group al-Nujaba had had an agreement with the Iraqi government not to target American facilities, but stressed it was no longer the case.

“All previous agreements [with the government] have been annulled and the resistance now reserves the right to set its own goals. The resistance, despite considering the US embassy in Baghdad as a den of spies, had agreed not to target it. From now on, it holds the right to attack US targets in this country,” al-Shammari said.
The militant group representative also demanded that Baghdad reveal the names of those who supposedly passed the information to the US, which helped Washington to carry out its raid in Syria. Al-Shammari warned that otherwise if that information were not provided, the group would take matters into its own hands and punish those it believes to be responsible.

He was referring to the since-retracted statement by Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby that Iraqi authorities helped the US to carry out “successful strikes” on Syria’s territory in February. Baghdad strongly rejected the notion that it somehow helped the US’s operation which is said to have left several militiamen dead and reportedly levelled nearly 10 buildings belonging to them…”

The head of a local California teachers union president has come under fire in recent days after a video showed him taking his 2-year-old daughter off at a private school for in-person instruction—as public schools remain closed in many cities in the state.

“Matt Meyer Berkeley Federation of Teachers President blocks opening public schools in-person, yet has had his own child in in-person school since June 2020. Stop the hypocrisy. Our children are suffering. Open schools full-time Now,” the group wrote on YouTube.

Meyer, who is the head of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers union, appeared to confirm the incident to Fox News and other news outlets.

Meyer told Fox News that the video of his child, which was blurred out, was “very inappropriate” and an intrusion of her privacy.

  25. Caroline Glick – Mark Levin reveals direct link between the U.S. media’s longstanding hostility towards Israel and its burgeoning anti-Americanism
    Jewish World Review
    13-16 minutes

Mark Levin, a Jewish American talk radio host and former Reagan administration official, makes no effort to hide what he thinks. Indeed, what his three-hour radio show’s 14 million regular listeners and the millions more who watch his top-rated show on Fox News every Sunday love most about Levin is that he gives them the unvarnished truth as he sees it. And Levin does so with a combination of intellectual depth and populist passion.

Levin’s massive audience insulates him from the growing fear of censors that now plagues conservatives in America. At a time when progressive propaganda has become a substitute for news reporting at liberal media organs across the United States, fresh from four years of unrelenting media assaults on former President Donald Trump and his supporters, Levin is a leading voice for millions of Americans who feel increasingly marginalized and besieged.

  26. the gateway pundit – THE FRAUD WILL STAND – Supreme Court Rejects Sidney Powell’s Election Fraud Cases without Comment

[…]The Supreme Court rejected two mandamus petitions that Sidney Powell and other “Kraken”-aligned lawyers filed in late December. Those cases were stylized as In re Tyler Bowyer, et al. and In Re William Feehan. The cases took issue with the election results in Arizona and Wisconsin, where Trump lost to Joe Biden.

“The petitions for writs of mandamus are denied,” the court said Monday. That’s it, that’s the order.

The matter-of-factness and brevity stands in stark contrast to the urgency and “public importance” that the lawyers communicated in the since-dismissed petitions.

“A submission directly to this Court seeking an extraordinary writ of mandamus is unusual, but it has its foundation. While such relief is rare, this Court will grant it ‘where a question of public importance is involved, or where the question is of such a nature that it is peculiarly appropriate that such action by this Court should be taken,’” each of the mandamus petitions said.

Supreme Court Rejects Sidney Powell’s Election Fraud Petitions without Further Comment

It wasn’t an earth-shattering Monday morning when it came to Supreme Court orders, but court watchers may have noticed that the justices, without comment or explanation, jettisoned more lingering 2020 election challenges. It happened one week after SCOTUS cleared out several similar cases and the morning after Donald Trump repeated the “stolen” election lie to his loyal followers at CPAC.

The Supreme Court rejected two mandamus petitions that Sidney Powell and other “Kraken”-aligned lawyers filed in late December.

Each of the petitions also presented four questions for the court to answer:

    A. Whether presidential electors have standing to challenge the outcome of a presidential election for fraud and illegality that cause the defeat of their candidate?

    B. Whether federal courts have and should exercise jurisdiction under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 over claims by presidential electors that the presidential election was stolen from them by fraud and illegality under color law in violation of their constitutional rights under the Elections and Electors, Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the U.S. Constitution?

    C. Whether a claim by presidential electors to de-certify the results of a presidential election and enjoin voting in the electoral college by the rival slate of electors is barred by laches when it is brought within the state law statute of limitations for post-certification election contests, and before the post recount re- certification?

    D. Whether the remedial powers of a federal court under 42 U.S.C. §§ 1983 and 1988 include invalidation of an unconstitutionally conducted election, and an injunction against presidential electors appointed in such an election from voting in the electoral college?

None of those questions were answered and the Supreme Court did not take up any of its time explaining why it did not do so.

Last week, an independent forensic audit in Maricopa County, Arizona found “no evidence of vote switching” by Dominion Voting Systems’ machines.

The Supreme Court finally rejected Sidney Powell’s election conspiracy theory lawsuits

The Supreme Court on Monday formally rejected two of Sidney Powell’s lawsuits seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 US election, brushing away any lingering ideas that Donald Trump would be declared the true winner.

As Law and Crime first reported, the court didn’t offer any comment while rejecting the two lawsuits. One lawsuit sought to overturn results in Arizona, the other in Wisconsin.

Joe Biden, the winner of the presidential election, was inaugurated on January 20.

The cases — premised on a bizarre conspiracy theory that election-technology companies were in cahoots with the regime of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez to secretly flip votes from Trump to Biden — were widely expected to fail. The Supreme Court has rejected several other lawsuits seeking to overturn election results.

The rejections also extend the astounding loss streak from Trump and his allies challenging the election results. Out of more than 40 lawsuits filed, all of them ultimately failed.

Powell’s other two lawsuits, in Georgia and Michigan, have also lost multiple rounds in court. The Supreme Court previously said it would not hear the Michigan case, and Powell had withdrawn the Georgia case. Biden won all of the states where Powell challenged election results.

Powell’s lawsuits and conspiracy theories have opened the possibility of devastating consequences for her.

One election-technology company she falsely claimed was part of a plot to falsify election results, Smartmatic, filed a defamation lawsuit against her, Fox News, and Rudy Giuliani, seeking $2.7 billion in damages. Another, Dominion Voting Systems, filed a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit against her. Those companies have filed other lawsuits as well and sent legal notices to people and companies they accused of parroting or platforming her claims.

She and the attorneys she worked with to file lawsuits in Michigan are also facing sanctions and could lose their law licenses.

Trump’s lie that he was the true winner of the 2020 election led to an insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, for which he became the first president to be impeached a second time. The Senate acquitted him February 13, with 57 senators voting to convict him.

At his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday — his first major public speech since the insurrection — he once again pushed the lie that he was the true election winner.

  27. The US and the UN Nuclear Inspectors Must Stop Appeasing Iran

As Iran continues to maintain its defiance over its controversial nuclear programme, the failure of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN-body responsible for monitoring Iran’s activities, is only lending further encouragement to the ayatollahs to indulge in further acts of dangerous brinkmanship. As Iran continues to maintain its defiance over its controversial nuclear programme, the failure of the UN-body responsible for monitoring Iran’s activities is only lending further encouragement to the ayatollahs to indulge in further acts of dangerous brinkmanship.

In the latest example of Iran’s increasingly reckless approach to the nuclear issue, the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has threatened to increase uranium enrichment to 60 percent, just below the 90 percent threshold required to produce weapons grade material.

  28. MARCH 01 2021 – WHO: ‘Unrealistic’ to say Covid will end in 2021

The number of new coronavirus infections rose last week for the first time in seven weeks, the World Health Organisation said on Monday.

“We need to have a stern warning for all of us: that this virus will rebound if we let it,” Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO technical lead for Covid-19, told a briefing. “And we cannot let it.”

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the rise in cases was “disappointing but not surprising” and urged countries not to relax measures to fight the disease.

  30. Rudy Giuliani just lost his YouTube privileges for two weeks

YouTube has suspended Rudy Giuliani’s YouTube channel for the second time this year for making false claims of fraud in the 2020 US presidential election and has issued a strike against his channel. It’s Giulani’s second strike within 90 days, according to Bloomberg, meaning that Giuliani cannot upload videos for two weeks. In a statement, YouTube also cited Giulani’s promotion of nicotine, which is against the company’s rules.

“We have clear Community Guidelines that govern what videos may stay on YouTube, which we enforce consistently, regardless of speaker,” a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge. “We removed content from the Rudy W. Giuliani channel for violating our sale of regulated goods policy, which prohibits content facilitating the use of nicotine, and our presidential election integrity policy. Additionally, in accordance with our long standing strikes system, we issued a strike against the Rudy W. Giuliani channel, which temporarily restricts uploading or live-streaming.”

In January, YouTube suspended Giuliani for a week for sharing 2020 election misinformation and temporarily suspended him from YouTube’s partner program, meaning he couldn’t earn ad revenue on his videos.

If Giuliani gets a third strike in the same 90-day period following the first, his channel will be permanently removed from YouTube, according to the company’s strikes policy.

  31. ‘Not a good idea:’ Experts concerned about pope trip to Iraq

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Infectious disease experts are expressing concern about Pope Francis’ upcoming trip to Iraq, given a sharp rise in coronavirus infections there, a fragile health care system and the unavoidable likelihood that Iraqis will crowd to see him.

No one wants to tell Francis to call it off, and the Iraqi government has every interest in showing off its relative stability by welcoming the first pope to the birthplace of Abraham. The March 5-8 trip is expected to provide a sorely-needed spiritual boost to Iraq’s beleaguered Christians while furthering the Vatican’s bridge-building effortswith the Muslim world.

But from a purely epidemiological standpoint, as well as the public health message it sends, a papal trip to Iraq amid a global pandemic is not advisable, health experts say.

Their concerns were reinforced with the news Sunday that the Vatican ambassador to Iraq, the main point person for the trip who would have escorted Francis to all his appointments, tested positive for COVID-19 and was self-isolating.
