Reader’s Links for February 27, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. US lawmakers ask Biden about plan to stop Saudi ‘offensive operations’ on Yemen
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20210227-us-lawmakers-ask-biden-about-plan-to-stop-saudi-offensive-operations-on-yemen/

“Following remarks that the US would continue its support for Saudi Arabia to defend itself, a group of 41 progressive lawmakers have sent a letter to US President Joe Biden asking him to clarify his pledge to halt US support for Saudi “offensive operations” in Yemen.

In his first foreign policy address earlier in February, Biden said his administration was: “Ending all American support for offensive operations in the war in Yemen, including relevant arms sales.”

However, he also promised that the US would continue to help Saudi Arabia defend itself against missile attacks, including those from Iranian-backed militias like the Houthis in Yemen.

Therefore, the lawmakers sent him a letter expressing support for his decision to halt US support for the Saudi war in Yemen, but asked Biden to clarify what he meant by “military, intelligence [and] logistical” support.

In their letter, the lawmakers defined the “military, intelligence [and] logistical” as “offensive” activities.

“You have said that the United States will ‘continue to support and help Saudi Arabia defend its sovereignty and its territorial integrity and its people’ from ‘threats from Iranian-supplied forces in multiple countries,'” the letter says.

The letter written by Peter DeFazio, Ro Khanna and Debbie Dingell, and signed by 38 other lawmakers, asked: “What activities does this policy entail, and under what legal authority is the administration authorised to engage in such activities?”

Speaking to The Intercept, DeFazio claimed that he wasn’t aware of any formal communication between the Biden administration and Congress about their policy, and confirmed that the letter intended to obtain answers.

“That raises questions that we would like to have answered,” according to DeFazio. “How do you define weapons? What’s the difference between an offensive weapon or a defensive weapon? Congress has acted a number of times to block arms sales to the Saudis. So, we just have a number of questions.”

He added: “We think it’s obviously a tremendous improvement over the position of the Trump administration. We would just like more clarification, more detail about what the shift means and also what [legal] authority they’re depending upon to continue to be involved in this conflict in any way.”

Meanwhile, Khanna told The Intercept: “My understanding is that the ban on any US participation in Saudi military strikes applies very broadly to any Saudi bombing or missile strikes into Yemen.”

He added: “There is no wiggle room for the Saudis to claim they’re attacking a place in Yemen out of self-defence. That is my understanding of how the administration intends the directive.””

  2. Report: Ethnic cleansing being committed in Tigray
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20210227-report-ethnic-cleansing-being-committed-in-tigray/

“Ethiopian officials and militia fighters are carrying out a systematic ethnic cleansing operation in the state of Tigray, according to a confidential US government report, Anadolu Agency reports.

The report obtained by the New York Times documents a land of looted houses and abandoned villages where tens of thousands of people have gone missing.

Written earlier this month, it notes that officials and fighters from neighbouring Amhara state entered Tigray in support of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

They are “deliberately and efficiently rendering Western Tigray ethnically homogeneous through the organized use of force and intimidation,” said the report. “Whole villages were severely damaged or completely erased.”

Amnesty International said in a report earlier Friday that Eritrean troops fighting in Tigray have systematically killed hundreds of unarmed civilians in the northern city of Axum on November 28-29, 2020…”

  3. Clashes in Yemen’s Marib kill around 50 fighters: Govt source
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/2/8/404959/World/Region/Clashes-in-Yemens-Marib-kill-around–fighters-Govt.aspx

“Fighting in war-torn Yemen’s Marib province between government forces and Houthi rebels killed around 50 combatants, including a special forces commander, a government source said Saturday.

Earlier this month, the Houthis resumed a push to capture Marib city, 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of the rebel-held capital Sanaa.

The city lies close to some of Yemen’s richest oil fields and its capture would be major prize for the rebels.

“Twenty-two members of the government forces and more than 28 rebels have died in the last 24 hours in the fighting that continues unabated on the fronts in Marib province,” a government source said.

A Saudi-led coalition launched more than 12 air strikes in support of government forces on the ground, according to rebel channel Al Massirah.

On Friday, more than 60 fighters were killed in fighting in Marib, the bloodiest day since the start of the offensive on February 8.

Since then, clashes have resulted in hundreds of deaths among fighters on both sides, according to government sources, and displaced hundreds of families. The Houthis generally do not disclose their losses.

Yemen has been embroiled in a bloody power struggle since 2014 between its government, supported by the Saudi-led military coalition, and Houthi rebels, who control most of the north.

The grinding conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, according to international organisations, sparking what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”

  6. Turkey rescues 29 migrants beaten by Greek soldiers
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/turkey-rescues-29-migrants-beaten-by-greek-soldiers/2159222

“Turkish security forces rescued 29 irregular migrants beaten and deprived of their belongings by Greek soldiers, the Turkish Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“In the most recent event, 29 irregular migrants were brutally beaten by Greek soldiers. Their money, phones and even their shoes were confiscated,” the statement said.

The migrants were stranded on a small islet near the banks of the (Maritsa) River.

“In their testimonial, the migrants reported that they were beaten and all their belongings were taken by force by the Greek authorities who then tried to forcibly send them to Turkey,” the statement said.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum seekers who want to cross to Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

The country hosts nearly 4 million refugees, including over 3.6 million Syrians, more than any other country in the world.”

  7. ‘Turkey cannot be excluded from Eastern Mediterranean’
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/-turkey-cannot-be-excluded-from-eastern-mediterranean-/2159382

“Greece’s efforts to exclude Turkey from the Eastern Mediterranean threaten regional peace and security, a former senior Greek diplomat said on Saturday.

Speaking to Gnomi newspaper, published in Greece’s northeastern port city of Alexandroupolis, Panagiotis Ioakimidis, a former advisor to the Greek Foreign Ministry, discussed the Turkish-Greek relations and regional affairs.

Ioakimidis said that Greece’s efforts to make alliances with some countries in the Eastern Mediterranean does not offer solutions to issues in the region.

“It should be accepted that Turkey is a Mediterranean country, which has to be taken into consideration within the framework of regional developments”, he said.

Referring to the recently restarted explanatory talks between Turkey and Greece, Ioakimidis noted that the talks do not have to be limited to the issue of Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) and that many other issues can be incorporated.

“However, for the demarcation of EEZ and continental shelves, countries should first reach an agreement on width of territorial waters,” he noted.

Arguing that Turkey and Greece, as neighboring countries, have no choice but to have friendly relations, Ioakimidis stressed improvement in the bilateral relations would significantly contribute to both countries’ prosperity.

“Border regions such as Thrace and Eastern Aegean Islands will particularly benefit from such thing. There can be cooperation and joint projects in the fields of tourism, transportation and education,” he said.

About the Cyprus issue, Ioakimidis said the Greek Cypriot administration should embrace “Guterres Framework” and particularly its principle of political equality.

Turkey, which has the longest continental coastline in the Eastern Mediterranean, has rejected the maritime boundary claims by Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration, stressing that?these excessive claims violate the sovereign rights of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots.

Ankara last year sent several drill ships to explore for energy in the Eastern Mediterranean, asserting its rights in the region, as well as those of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Turkish leaders have repeatedly stressed that Ankara is in favor of resolving outstanding problems in the region through international law, good neighborly relations, dialogue, and negotiations.

The island of Cyprus has been divided since 1964, when ethnic attacks forced Turkish Cypriots to withdraw into enclaves for their safety.

In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aiming at Greece’s annexation led to Turkey’s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution and violence.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was founded in 1983.

The Cyprus issue remains unresolved despite a series of efforts in recent years, including a failed 2017 UN initiative with the participation of the guarantor countries.”

  8. Saudi Arabia hit by mass ballistic missile and drone attack – Iran backed rebels blamed

A BALLISTIC missile allegedly fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebel group was intercepted over Riyadh on Saturday, with explosive laden drones also reported downed near southern Saudi Arabian cities.

Separately explosive laden drones were shot down over the Saudi cities of Jazan and Khamis Mushait near the Yemeni border.

There are no reports of any casualties or damage thus far from any of the attacks.

In a statement the Saudi led coalition which is fighting in Yemen said it intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Houthi militants towards Riyadh.

It later added a UAV packed with explosives was brought down near Jazan.

  9. THE GATEWAY PUNDIT – HUGE UPDATE! Top WHO Official Caught on Video in December 2019 Revealing CORONAVORUS MANIPULATION AT WUHAN LAB BEFORE PANDEMIC (VIDEO)

As early as 2018 US State Department officials warned about safety risks at the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab on scientists conducting risky tests with the bat coronavirus.

US officials made several trips to the Wuhan laboratory.

Despite the warnings the US National Institute of Health (NIH) under Dr. Anthony Fauci awarded a $3.7 million grant to the Wuhan lab studying the bat virus. This was after State Department warned about the risky tests going on in the lab.
    This is unbelievable!

The deadly China coronavirus that started in China sometime in late 2019 has now circled the globe. Evidence suggests that the coronavirus didn’t come naturally. We still don’t know whether the deadly virus was leaked intentionally or if it was an accident.
** And yet as recently as February 9, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) has denied the coronavirus leaked from a lab in Wuhan!

But now a video has surfaced from December 2019 of WHO official Peter Daszak admitting to coronavirus manipulation at the Wuhan Lab before the pandemic was announced.

The video interview was originally filmed on December 9, 2019. A copy was posted in May 2020.

At 29:52 mark of the video the WHO official says, “coronaviruses are pretty good… you can manipulate them in the lab pretty easily… the spiked proteins drive a lot about what happens. You can get the sequence you can build the protein, we work with Ralph Baric at UNC to do this, insert into the backbone of another virus and do some work in a lab.”

    This is an explosive development.

    Via Taiwan News:

Video taken just days before the start of the coronavirus pandemic shows a current World Health Organization (WHO) inspector discuss the testing of modified coronaviruses on human cells and humanized mice in the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), just weeks before the first cases of COVID-19 were announced in the city of Wuhan itself.

In a video that was originally taken on Dec. 9, 2019, three weeks before the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission announced an outbreak of a new form of pneumonia, virologist Vincent Racaniello interviewed British zoologist and president of EcoHealth Alliance Peter Daszak about his work at the nonprofit to protect the world from the emergence of new diseases and predict pandemics. Since 2014, Daszak’s organization has received millions of dollars of funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), which it has funneled to the WIV to carry out research on bat coronaviruses.

In the first phase of research, which took place from 2014 to 2019, Daszak coordinated with Shi Zhengli, also known as “Bat Woman,” at the WIV on investigating and cataloging bat coronaviruses across China. EcoHealth Alliance received US$3.7 million in funding from the NIH for this research and 10 percent was channeled to the WIV, reported NPR.

The second, more dangerous phase, which started in 2019, involved gain-of-function (GoF) research on coronaviruses and chimeras in humanized mice from the lab of Ralph S. Baric of the University of North Carolina. Funding for the program was withdrawn by the NIH under the Trump administration on April 27 amid the pandemic.

At the 28:10 mark of the podcast interview, Daszak states that researchers found that SARS likely originated from bats and then set out to find more SARS-related coronaviruses, eventually finding over 100. He observed that some coronaviruses can “get into human cells in the lab,” and others can cause SARS disease in “humanized mouse models.”…

…Controversially, Daszak has been included among a team of experts from the WHO that has finally been allowed by Beijing to investigate the origin of the outbreak of COVID-19, over a year after it started.

Here is the full video that is still up on YouTube for the moment.
