Reader’s Links for January 10, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. “Grandpa, what was it like back in 2021?”
“Well, that’s a big question,” said the old man. “It was a confusing time. The future rolled by like heavy freight every day. Every time we thought there was hope, our hopes were dashed.”
“But weren’t you happy when Donald Trump lost? I mean, my teacher says he was worse than Adolph Hitler, and that he killed millions of black people.” The old man’s granddaughter had bright brown eyes that twinkled when she looked at him.
“Well, you know what they say–that history is written by the victors. But no, it isn’t true at all. Hitler truly did kill millions. President Trump not only did not kill anyone, but during his time he helped millions of people find jobs. Millions of black and hispanic people, as a matter of fact.”
“Oh.” The girl sat at her grandfather’s feet, trying to understand. This didn’t square with what her grade seven history teacher was teaching. “Well, why didn’t people just stand up and speak the truth?”
“They did. But the left were very clever with language. In fact language was their greatest strength. If you didn’t have the same opinions as they did, then what you said was labelled “disinformation”, and you were cancelled.”
    “Cancelled?”
    “Yes. Erased, removed and ruined.”
“And while all this was going on you had the first pandemic?”
    “That’s right.”
“What was that like? Our teacher says we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary next week. She says if it wasn’t for the first pandemic we wouldn’t have had the Revolution.”
“She’s got a point there, I’ll give her that. That’s when the continent began to divide into different countries. It had a lot to do with everything. There was very much confusion about the virus except from those who used it to grab power.

Little dramas played out all around. Good people tried to keep their own little boats, and the boats of those they care for, afloat.

If I imagined a pandemic before that first pandemic came along, I imagined some sort of gothic, middle age chaos–I don’t really know. I didn’t imagine the silent kind of mental-health problems brought on by unemployment, or worry, or inactivity and isolation. I didn’t imagine grandparents cut–no cleaved–from their grandchildren, or teenagers kept from their posse. I didn’t imagine Christmas split by families to avoid too many cars in the driveway just so they didn’t get fined or arrested. I didn’t imagine the hidden frailty setting in so that you couldn’t see who was doing alright, and who was really struggling. I imagined damage, but not the way it actually unfolded.

I didn’t imagine scenarios where there was public outrage at politicians taking vacation on a beach somewhere. But this was when we first started to see how the new communism was forming. Society stratified according to how your politics went. And people were not angry so much because they are being lied to by elites–they were used to this–but because these liars were flaunting the trappings of normalcy that had just been stolen from the rest of us. Our loss of freedom was fresh and it hurt. So when we saw some bureaucrat or elected bum flying off to the Caribbean, it made us mad.

Collectivists grabbed power the minute the pandemic landed from Wuhan. We just didn’t know it, and as President Trump kept reaching out to grab it back, they kept a step ahead. They focused on those four battle ground states, circumvented state legislatures, changed the laws that legitimized votes, and went against the Constitution. This is what collectivists did all because they firstly had used the pandemic to create an excuse for fraudulent mail-in ballots.

What your history teacher won’t show you is the big shots back then who telegraphed their confidence in the coming pandemic before the rest of us knew about it. Guys like George Soros and Bill Gates. They were very sure of themselves. It was all a set up and the evidence was there to prove it, but it was covered up or destroyed.

“Was President Zuckerberg one of those guys?” The girl heard her mother call from the kitchen saying dinner was ready.

“Yes. He was one of the worst. All the little-people dramas playing out close to us were directly connected to the actions of these powerful, corrupt, collectivists. Actually, they were fascists because they worked with the biggest companies in the world, like Facebook They did incredible damage to innocent people.”

    “Facebook?”

“Yes. It’s gone now but that was Zuckerberg’s company before it collapsed and he started Greenbook. But we have to go and eat. I hear your mom calling us again. We’ll talk more later.”

    “Ok grandpa.”

  2. West Midlands Police is blasted for spending £180,000 on TWO more ‘woke’ jobs after advertising for fairness and belonging chief (dailymail, Jan 10, 2021)

“A police force which was shamed for hiring ‘woke’ staff is now advertising two more positions.

West Midlands Police are now hiring a £73,340-a-year assistant director of talent and organisational effectiveness.

The force, which failed to record 16,600 crimes in 2019, is also hiring an engagement and consultation officer and will pay £28,725.

The force were slammed for advertising for the role of assistant director of fairness and belonging on more than £74,000 last week. In all, the three jobs pay £180,000.

The role is to ‘support and oversee improved inclusive culture’ according to The Sun.

        • End in Sight? Israel Rolls Out COVID Booster Shots

Israel’s coronavirus vaccination campaign, the world’s fastest per capita, shifted to booster shots on Sunday in a bid to protect the most vulnerable citizens by next month and ease curbs on the economy.

Israelis over the age of 60, those with health problems, and medical personnel have been receiving first injections of Pfizer vaccines since Dec 19. As three weeks have passed, they are beginning to be due for follow-up, final doses.…

The Health Ministry said 19.5% of the population have been vaccinated, including more than 72% of the over-60s. Latecomer elderly will be admitted for first shots, officials say, but otherwise vaccines will be reserved for boosters.

  4. Migration-Background Men Escape Maximum Sentences in Graveyard Torture Case (breitbart, Jan 10, 2021)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/01/10/migrant-background-men-escape-maximum-sentence-cemetery-torture-case/

“Two migration-background men involved in the torture of two underage boys at a cemetery in Solna, Sweden, have avoided the maximum sentence for their convictions.

This week, a court found Mohammed El Hani and Ali Jahani guilty of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated rape, and assault.

Amin El Hani, who was born in Sweden to migrants who came from Tunisia, was sentenced to five years and six months in prison and received an age discount on his sentence for being 18 when the crime took place.

According to a report from Nyheter Idag, he will likely only serve three years and seven months due to Sweden’s policy of allowing probation two-thirds of the way through a sentence.

Ali Jahani, born in Iran but now a Swedish citizen, was sentenced to nine years in prison but will likely be eligible for release in six years. As he was 21 at the time of the crime, he could not get a youth discount on his sentence.

The news outlet noted that it would not be possible to revoke citizenship and deport Jahani to Iran due to current Swedish legislation.

According to Nyheter Idag, the maximum penalty for the crimes was only 13 years, but the judge would not hand even that term down, despite a large body of evidence including DNA, electronic evidence from mobile phones, and credible testimony from the victims.

The torture took place in August 2020, with the two underaged boys later describing how the two men had tortured them from 11 p.m. to around 9 a.m. the following day.

According to the boys, the men claimed to be part of the “Death Squad” gang and threatened them while taking them to a nearby cemetery. They then forced the boys to strip naked and made one lay on his stomach as one of the men stood on his head.

The men then also tortured the boys with cigarette lighters. After threatening to break one of the victim’s necks, Amin El Hani sexually assaulted one of them.

Both boys were later made to lie in makeshift graves that the migration-background men had forced them to dig. They feared that they would be buried alive before they finally were able to escape.”

  5. French Police Look Tto Create New ‘Super Riot Cops’ to Combat Urban Violence (breitbart, Jan 10, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/01/10/french-police-look-tto-create-new-super-riot-cops-to-combat-urban-violence/

“The French Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité (CRS), the country’s riot police, are looking to create a new special unit to specifically deal with urban violence in no-go zones.

Last month, the French government looked into reorganising the CRS after Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin requested the creation of a team to specifically deal with the growing problems of urban violence in some areas of the country.

The new unit, a ‘Super CRS’, would be an elite group that would be able to rapidly deploy anywhere in French territory to quell urban violent incidents, broadcaster BFMTV reports.

According to the broadcaster, the number of incidents of urban violence, which have included police officer being ambushed in no-go zones, has increased in several departments across France.

Earlier this week, the director of the CRS central directorate discussed recruitment for the new outfit and approximately 150 CRS officers are eligible to volunteer for service with the elite unit.

Those who do will be subjected to several tests and will be equipped with new equipment including protective gear against fire and acid attacks, as well as new vehicles.

Some within the force have been lukewarm on the idea, with criticism that the force will be based near Paris and will likely be unable to rapidly deploy to some areas of the country.

Urban violence has been a major issue in France, even during the restrictive lockdowns rolled out last year in response to the Wuhan virus pandemic.

In April of last year, 25 cities and towns across the country erupted into riots and violence with several attacks on police and an attempt to burn down a police station in Strasbourg.

Over New Year’s Eve, the country saw hundreds of cars burned and many acts of violence against police. Violence, particularly vehicle arson, has become a common occurrence at New Year’s in France for many years.”

  6. The ignorance of the Americans about origin, history and the deeper context of the world is surely due to the lack of necessity for introspection. One was busy for centuries first to conquer a continent and then to enrich the whole world with one’s “cultural achievements”. 7. Vienna Govt to Hold Security Meeting After ‘Allahu Akbar’ Rioters Torched Christmas Tree (breitbart, Jan 10, 2021)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/01/10/vienna-govt-to-hold-security-meeting-after-nye-migrant-area-riot/

“The Vienna government will be holding a security meeting next week following a riot in a migrant-populated district on New Year’s Eve that saw a Christmas tree set on fire by Muslims.

The rioting took place at Reumannplatz in the heavily-migrant populated Favoriten district of the Austrian capital and saw a Christmas tree set on fire by members of a group of around 40 rioters along with various shops in the area having their windows smashed.

Police president Gerhard Pürstl said Friday that the government would be meeting to discuss the incident on Tuesday but did not announce any details about the meeting, Austrian broadcaster ORF reports.

Following the riots, several people were arrested, including a 21-year-old Syrian migrant who was taken into custody on the night of the incident. The Syrian is said to have attempted to break into a jewellery shop while using a trash can as a makeshift battering ram.

Two Austrian citizens, aged 18 and 21, were also arrested for attempted grievous bodily harm after throwing fireworks at police officers, and a 17-year-old Iraqi migrant was arrested on suspected property damage charges.

According to Austrian newspaper Heute, one of the suspects gave investigators the reason that the Christmas tree was set on fire as “A Christmas tree does not belong in a Muslim district.”

Several police officers who arrived at the scene during the riot were also attacked by the rioters, who hit them with rocks and launched fireworks at them while yelling various slogans including “Allahu Akbar!”

The National Police Directorate has stated that at least 14 property damages offences took place during the rioting, which was condemned by Austrian interior minister Karl Nehammer who called the attacks on police “absolutely unacceptable.”

The riot comes just months after far-left Kurds and their Antifa allies battled in the streets of Favoriten with the ultra-nationalist Turkish Grey Wolves.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz blamed Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan for using Turks to “sow strife” as the Grey Wolves are known for their support of the Islamist leader.”

  8. I spent many years working for, with and around politicians. I watched people starting out with so much enthusiasm, they were going to do the right thing. They were going to be champions, they tossed around words like decency, integrity, selflessness, and they got themselves elected. I always thought they lacked something. I met quiet intellectuals, loud business men, union organizers, and I never quite figured what linked them all in the long run, until just recently when Theresa Tam stated the little people should wear a mask during sex. Politicians do not realize we like to be kissed first.

If I were to ever put my hat in the ring I would tell the voters straight up. “I am not going to lie to you, down the road I will change, you must understand I am here today because I too want the money and all the perks that go with being a superior of yours, however I will kiss you first.

  9. Google, Microsoft, & Qualcomm: Tech Giants Among Top Donors to Joe Biden’s Inaugural Committee (sputniknews, Jan 10, 2021)
    https://sputniknews.com/us/202101101081720341-google-microsoft–qualcomm-tech-giants-among-top-donors-to-joe-bidens-inaugural-committee/

“Although the upcoming 20 January inauguration ceremony is expected to be significantly smaller in scale due to the pandemic, the Biden campaign sent out fundraiser packages to potential donors offering them exclusive options for attending the event. The top package offers a person or a company to be named a chair of the inaugural events.

The Biden Inaugural Committee has published the list of its top donors, who contributed over $200 dollars to the organisers of the ceremony and related events, revealing that several giants of American business were among the major contributors.

The lengthy list, mostly consisting of private donors, also included tech giants Google, Microsoft, and Qualcomm; some of the biggest service providers in the US – Verizon, Comcast, and Charter Communications; aviation and defence industry giant, Boeing; several unions, including the American Federation of Teachers COPE and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). The list also included the investment company Capital Group and two healthcare industry companies – insurance firm Anthem and tech company Masimo Corporation.

At the same time, the Biden Inaugural Committee refused to accept donations from a number of sources, namely from registered lobbyists and foreign agents, as well as from companies engaged in “the extraction, processing, distribution or sale of oil, gas, or coal”. PACs and executives from fossil fuel companies were also banned from contributing to the committee.

The committee has so far not revealed the size of the donations by the corporations, but is bound to do so at a later date in accordance with US laws. However, when the Biden campaign started sending out inauguration fundraiser packages to potential donors in the middle of December 2020 the biggest lot was $500,000 for private individuals and $1,000,000 for companies, which would grant the respective entity chair status for the inaugural events.

The packages reportedly provided exclusive access to the inaugural events, which, however, are expected to be limited due to the continuing coronavirus pandemic. While the scale of the inauguration ceremony remains unclear, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will still be attending the ceremony held on Capitol Hill as per tradition. The event is also likely to have increased security following the events of 6 January, when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol as Congress was engaged in certifying Biden’s victory in the election. The incident, condemned in the strongest terms by Democrats, Republicans, and later Trump himself, left four protesters and one member of the Capitol Police dead as a result of the clashes.”

China’s President ‘turned down offer to name Mark Zuckerberg’s child’

Mark Zuckerberg may have impressed China’s President Xi Jinping by speaking to him in Mandarin, but it didn’t stop the leader from turning down a personal request from the Facebook founder.

According to Page Six, at a prestigious White House dinner hosted by President Obama and the First Lady, Zuckerberg approached President Xi about the subject of his unborn child.

At the dinner, which included Apple’s Tim Cook and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Zuckerberg reportedly asked President Xi whether he would be able to give an honorary Chinese name to the daughter he and wife Priscilla Chan are expecting.

Page Six claims President Xi said the task would be “too much responsibility” and declined, though a spokesperson for Zuckerberg told the newspaper this was not correct.

Zuckerberg, now the world’s ninth richest man, still had cause for celebration about his time with President Xi despite the setback, however.

The entrepreneur had already met President Xi two days earlier at an annual US-China Internet Industry Forum in Seattle, which is where government officials and technology chief executives discuss the future of the industry.

Zuckerberg had made it a personal challenge to learn Mandarin last year, and after the forum wrote on his Facebook page: “On a personal note, this was the first time I’ve ever spoken with a world leader entirely in a foreign language. I consider this a meaningful personal milestone.”

  10. I heard your voice saying EXACTLY THAT as I wrote this!!

My unwritten answer to it (because brevity is important in these little writing dalliances), is that the Left Lost the war, but was given a bit of Alaskan real estate to house their most radical, incorrigible losers. Quebec went on its own, finally, but only after signing over a fair portion of their resources in the ground (because Quebec was not the rightful owner after years of pretending to be a “Have Not” province.) Alberta separated. The “Big One” finally came to California, sliding most of it into the sea to most everyone’s glee. And the rest of the continent formed a new, great country. The little girl’s father was soon moving the whole family back from Alaska where he worked for the winning side, documenting the military tribunals that had ensued after the war.

Or something like that. We need a happy ending!

    • Liiving memory is painful enough.

From Tom Kratman, LTC retired, USA and a practicing lawyer and author…

He raises some interesting questions and points out some things I think a lot of people missed. And yes, people will say this is ‘conspiracy theory’… So be it…

    Tom Kratman sends:

Widest possible sharing authorized and encouraged; share via copy and paste. Be sure to include my name, so the left can understand I am not afraid of them and perfectly willing, on my own ticket, to fight:

So why, after all this, do so many of us still believe the election was stolen?

In the first place, there are two things we mean by “the election was stolen.” They’re mutually reinforcing, yes, but they’re not the same. The first of these is via the influence of media and social media. It was not illegal for them to have been Biden’s campaign, but they were Biden’s campaign. What that means, in practice, is that they used their privileges under the first amendment to violate the intent of the first amendment. I say “privileges,” by the way, rather than “rights” because by their conduct they have undermined the first amendment to the point we can calmly consider killing it, as regards the media, as so many lefties want it to be killed for the common citizenry. It no longer serves its purpose.

The second factor is our belief that actual spurious ballots were introduced into the system by both mailing in and other means. And the numbers were not even that large; Trump “lost” by about twelve thousand in Georgia, eighty thousand in Pennsylvania, and under twenty-one thousand in Wisconsin. Let’s not pretend that those were particularly difficult numbers to have illegally come up with.
    But there’s not a shred of evidence…the courts…

Look, friends, we live in the age of MiniTru and Comrade Ogilvy. We have precisely zero sources of reliable direct information. Don’t believe me?

    Answer these questions:

What was on Hunter Biden’s laptop?
What party and philosophy ruled the states that drove United States’ Covid stats into the stratosphere?
    Who took the blame?
How much evidence did there turn out to be of Russian interference with the 2016 election?
    And, conversely:
How many Arab states has Israel recently signed peace treaties with?
Who got NAFTA replaced with a treaty that more carefully guards US workers’ interests?
Who hasn’t gotten us into any new wars?
Under which presidency did the United States regain energy independence, so we DON’T get into any new wars?
Why are illegal immigrants largely going or staying home?
And how much do we hear about this: USPS worker charged with dumping ballots, as mail carriers perform extra trips before Election Day | Fox News
And, if you don’t know the answers to these, ask yourself why you don’t?

Moreover, why did Facebook and other social media suppress any notion of election fraud? One doesn’t need to suppress a lie; “a lie will not stand.” There’s only benefit in suppressing “inconvenient truths” (to steal another fraudulent Democrat meme).

Of course, when you control the media, a lie most certainly WILL stand…if it’s your lie.

Instead, we are thrown back on secondary increments of data, because the left isn’t clever enough – well, not YET, anyway – to have doctored those. (“Call for Comrade Ogilvy from Democratic Party Headquarters! Comrade Ogilvy please pick up the red phone in the lobby…”)

Among the secondary sources of information are:

The railroading of secession through various Democrat-run southern states by careful selection of those who would be allowed into the secession conventions.
    Tammany Hall.
“Vote often and early for James Michael Curley.”
The Battle of Athens and the E. H. Crump (Democratic Party) political machine.
Cook Country, which is to say, Chicago, 1960.
Princess Nudelman, the dead goldfish (yes, I know the fish didn’t cast a vote. What’s important is that someone TRIED).
Look at the heritage.org election fraud map.

In short, election fraud is so completely a part of the Democratic Party and the left, more generally, and has been for so long, that it would only be remarkable if there were a close election where there wasn’t any. We expect it. If we can’t easily see it, we expect it to be only because it’s a little better hidden than usual.

The Democratic Party is and always has been a party of corruption, heavy on power, short of or bereft of principle. The only difference between it and any given sub-Saharan African kleptocracy is in the shade of skin.

    But what about the courts?

No, wait; you didn’t know that the legal profession is up there – or down there – with college sociology departments for its tendency to lean left? You didn’t know that coming up with direct evidence is often quite difficult? Investigations take years to uncover single instances of discrete bank fraud; we’re expected to find evidence of massive voter fraud quickly? See below.

Then, too, one might well wonder just which John Roberts it was that visited Epstein’s pedophile island. Epstein didn’t waste his efforts on nobodies, you know; oh, no, he turned over the use of his harem of barely post-pubescent teens to the already powerful and the up and – you should pardon the expression – comers.

I don’t know that it was him. I will not insist it was him. I want to see an honest investigation into whether or not it was him.

Of course, to be more fair than he probably deserves, Roberts probably does think he’s heading off a civil war. He’s wrong, of course, as Roger Taney was before him; he is bringing the war closer and ensuring it will be worse.

Difficult to come up with evidence? Enter the mail-in ballot, a positive Godsend for would be election fraudsters. Just think about what’s required to prove effective fraud on that scale. It’s not the mere one hundred and thirteen thousand vote that allegedly swung things in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

We’re not talking here about railroading Jefferson Washington Lincoln III, the small-time dope dealer and occasional fence. Oh, no; this is a much more – an infinitely more – difficult problem.

For one thing, the investigators would have to scrub the voting rolls themselves. Then they’d also have to scrub the obituary columns and social security death register for the last century or so…or three. Add in the birth and naturalization records. They’d have to match not just the one hundred and thirteen thousand votes in question, but every mail in ballot AND every other ballot too. (No, the mere likelihood of most of the fraud coming via mail does not rule out more traditional methods.) And they’d have to do all this in a country that has an automatic revulsion against keeping and consolidating those very kinds of records, and often where the government in charge of the states in question will interpose every possible obstacle. And all of that with MiniTru ensuring that no adverse information ever sees the light of day.

Has anyone put that kind of effort into the investigation? No, they have not. Hence, with the best will in the world, the courts had not enough to work with. Hence, none of the investigations can be said to be valid. No, none of them. Neither can any of the court decisions, even where legally sound – and they were not all legally sound; Roberts, you swine, I’m looking at you – are dispositive, either.
So forget it; the information coming from the media is doctored and dishonest, with anything contrary studiously suppressed. The investigations were trash. The court’s refusal to hear cases prejudiced where not just outright unconstitutional.

Now some ignorant toad is going to scream, “Conspiracy loons! Conspiracy theory!”

Not on your life. People are not competent to conspire at this level, while Biden, cowering in his basement, certainly wasn’t. No, no; this is not a conspiracy but a consensus or, rather, several of them. A consensus exists when similar people, with similar values, backgrounds, and educations, see similar issues and problems, similarly, and come up with similar programs and solutions. A consensus doesn’t rule out conspiracy (“Adam, should we introduce spurious bit of bullshit X as people’s exhibit A, for the impeachment trial?”) but doesn’t depend on it either. It was sufficient in this case for enough middle and lower party workers and sundry activists, plus the media and the vile and filthy denationalized rich to a) believe that the only legitimate directions for the United States to go were further left, more globalist, less nationalist, more feminist, less nativist, etc., b) to recognize the promise of mail-in ballots, c) to deny for themselves that any principle is more important that continuing to move in those directions, and d) a resolve to do it, each in his or her or s/h/its individual capacity. No, Facebook did not conspire with Twitter; there was no need. No, X judge didn’t conspire with the Democratic Party; there was no need. No, Buffet and Bezos and Billzebub Gates didn’t conspire with Soros; there was no need. There was no need because they share a consensus.

And, so, no; we do not have any faith in the election results. Nor will we have, especially since we are quite certain that election fraud is now the way of the future. Soon to be President Harris (does anyone, anyone at all, have any illusions about that? Did anyone, ever? I have no more doubt of it than I have that she gives the best blowjob in the world, if the payoff is right) will never be considered legitimate. And she, and we, can expect everything from civil disobedience to nullification to riot to resistance in arms until the war commences. (Bet you didn’t know that the South was not the only region the states of which engaged in nullification.)

  17. Parler CEO ‘Prepared to Take Full Legal Action’ After Big Tech Companies Target Platform
    By Janita Kan

Parler founder and CEO John Matze said his company is “prepared to take full legal action” after several big tech companies suspended the social media network from their services, according to an email.

John Matze, Parler’s founder, told The Epoch Times in an email that he believes Apple, Google, and Amazon had acted in bad faith and that the social media platform is considering legal action.

Responding to accusations that Parler was enabling “threats of violence and illegal activity,” Matze said these companies are using recent events to “go after Parler,” even though “there is no evidence Parler was used to coordinate the events.”

“Parler has no groups-style feature and Facebook was the number one tool for coordinating meetups for that event,” Matze said.

The targeted moderation by these companies against Parler came after civil unrest and acts of violence marred a largely peaceful protest at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. A group of rioters and a minority of protesters waving American and Trump flags illegally stormed the Capitol building as lawmakers were counting electoral votes in a joint session of Congress. The mayhem on the day left five people dead, including one police office, and dozens of officers injured.

  18. Top House Democrat: Resolution Will Be Introduced to Charge Trump With ‘Inciting Sedition’

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), the No. 3 House Democrat, announced Sunday that a “privileged resolution will be introduced that will charge” President Donald Trump with “inciting sedition.”

Jeffries said that introducing a privileged resolution will allow the House to move “expeditiously” to consider the impeachment article before Jan. 20.

House Democrats, after introducing the article, will then “vote it out” and “send it over to the Senate without having to go through the traditional Judiciary Committee markup.”

However, Democrats’ chances of securing a conviction in the Senate before Jan. 20 appears to be slim.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday sent a letter to Republican senators about how the Senate could legally “dispose of any articles of impeachment” proposed by House Democrats against President Donald Trump before Jan. 20.

“The Senate is currently in recess and is holding pro forma sessions every three days until January 19. Pursuant to the unanimously approved order setting up the recess and these pro forma sessions, the Senate may conduct no business until January 19,” McConnell wrote in a statement.

  22. Rep. Nunes Calls for Racketeering Investigation Into Big Tech Companies Following Parler Ban

A top Republican in the House of Representatives on Sunday called for a racketeering probe into large technology companies who over the weekend took action against Parler, a social media website.

“This is clearly a violation of antitrust, civil rights, the RICO statute. There should be a racketeering investigation on all the people that coordinated this attack on not only a company but on all of those like us, like me, like you, Maria,” Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, told Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” host Maria Bartiromo.

After Twitter banned President Donald Trump and some other users, Parler saw its traffic explode. Soon, though, Google announced it had removed Parler from its online store, a move followed by Apple. Then, Amazon announced it was suspending Parler from its web hosting services.

  23. ACLU Warns of ‘Unchecked Power’ After Facebook, Twitter Suspend Trump

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on Friday warned that the suspension of President Donald Trump’s social media accounts wielded “unchecked power” by large tech companies.

Kate Ruane, a senior legislative counsel at the ACLU, said in a statement that Twitter’s decision to suspend Trump from social media sets a precedent for tech companies to silence voices.

The group first took issue with Trump’s usage of social media outlets to question the results of the Nov. 3 election and his allegations of voter fraud.

“We understand the desire to permanently suspend him now, but it should concern everyone when companies like Facebook and Twitter wield the unchecked power to remove people from platforms that have become indispensable for the speech of billions— especially when political realities make those decisions easier,” the ACLU statement read.

“A Turkish soldier was killed in a terrorist attack in southeastern Diyarbak?r province, the Interior Ministry announced on Jan. 9.

The statement said that Mehmet Çelik, a gendarmerie staff member, could not be saved and succumbed to his wounds in a hospital, while two other security forces were also injured during the armed conflict in Lice district.

The ministry wished Allah’s mercy on the martyr and fast recovery to the wounded personnel, adding that the operations would continue in the region.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.”

  27. Turkey, EU ready to work together
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/eu-has-priority-in-turkeys-agenda-president-erdogan-161506

“Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen on Jan. 9 discussed the steps aimed at enhancing the relations between Turkey and the European Union, the Turkish authorities have said.

In a video conference, Erdo?an and the EU official discussed the ways to develop relations between Turkey and the EU and addressed regional developments, Turkey’s Communications Directorate said in a statement.

The EU is on the priority of Turkey’s agenda, Erdo?an told von der Leyen, reiterating that Turkey sees its future in Europe.

He also pointed out the importance of resuming regular Turkey-EU summits and high-level dialogue meetings.

Turkey wants to open a new page in relations with the EU in the new year, Erdo?an said, adding that the year 2020 could not be made enough use of due to the whims and artificial problems that some EU members produced, according to the statement.

He added that this situation was not sustainable not only in terms of maintaining future relations but also in terms of the broad common geography. Erdo?an also said that updating the 2016 refugee deal would be the first step for a positive agenda on Turkey-EU relations.

Turkey and the EU signed a refugee deal in 2016, which aimed to discourage irregular migration through the Aegean Sea by taking stricter measures against human traffickers and improving the conditions of nearly four million Syrian refugees in Turkey. Erdo?an pointed out that the year 2021 offers a productive environment for new cooperation to be initiated in the field of migration.

The Customs Union agreement between Turkey and EU should be updated, Erdo?an stated, adding that Turkish nationals should be allowed visa-free travel within the Schengen area and steps should be taken in talks on Turkey’s EU accession.

He also mentioned reestablishing mutual trust and rerunning the consultation mechanism. Erdo?an underlined the need for an end to “exclusionary and discriminatory rhetoric” against Turkey.

Von der Leyen, for her part, said on Twitter: “Good exchange with Turkish President @RTErdo?an. We exchanged on the #COVID19 situation, the economic recovery, and the implementation of tasking of the European Council of December 2020.”

Turkey is working to turn new chapters in its relations with the EU, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu said on Jan. 7, noting that European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen were expected to pay a visit to Turkey.

The top Turkish diplomat is expected to visit Brussels to hold talks with the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, on Jan. 21.

Following months of strain due to Turkey’s search for hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Mediterranean, Ankara and Brussels stepped up for better dialogue last month.

Last month, at the EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels, it was decided to draw up a list of Turkish targets for sanctions over Ankara’s “unilateral actions and provocations” in the eastern Mediterranean, believed to be rich in energy resources. But they postponed their further decisions such as on trade tariffs or an arms embargo until they have consulted with the upcoming U.S. administration.

Turkey, which has the longest continental coastline in the eastern Mediterranean, has rejected maritime boundary claims of Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration and stressed that these excessive claims violate the sovereign rights of both Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots.”

“Turkish security forces neutralized 226 terrorists in dozens of operations carried out over the last month, the country’s National Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

“The heroic Turkish Armed Forces carried out a total of 43 operations, including eight large-scale and 35 medium-scale, at home and abroad over the past month,” the ministry said on Twitter.

It said a total of 226 terrorists were neutralized in the operations, without specifying their affiliations.

Turkish authorities use the term “neutralize” to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

Noting that Turkey’s counter-terrorism efforts will continue until the last terrorist is neutralized, the ministry said operations ongoing day and night.”

  29. Germany uses ’embassy hearings’ to speed up deportations
    https://www.dw.com/en/germany-uses-embassy-hearings-to-speed-up-deportations/a-56183306

“More than 250,000 people live in Germany without a legal status, largely because their nationality can’t be determined. The German government is paying foreign embassies to question them for potential deportation.

Amadou was seized with fear when he returned to his room in November. Waiting for him at the temporary facility for displaced people was a summons that told him he was required to appear before a commission from his homeland, Guinea, within days.

Amadou told DW that he knew what this meant. “Because I didn’t have papers, the immigration authorities wanted to send me there so they could get papers and deport me,” said Amadou, who asked that his real name not be used. “But why? I haven’t done anything bad.”

Amadou’s asylum application had been rejected. He was too frightened to attend his appointment with the commission. “I thought that then I would have to go away, leave my room, my friends — that there would be nothing left for me: only jail in Germany, jail in Conakry, then death,” he said, his voice breaking.

Such appointments, described as “embassy hearings,” are taking place all over Germany. The delegations from asylum applicants’ presumed countries of origin receive funding from Germany’s federal government, with people from African countries are most frequently affected. In 2019 and 2020, more than 1,100 people from Nigeria and almost 370 people from Ghana were called in, followed by citizens of Gambia (146) and Guinea (126). Many more were summoned for interviews, as Germany’s government revealed following a formal information request from Ulla Jelpke, member of the Bundestag for the socialist Left party.

According to the government. these hearings are both legal and necessary. “Hearings are an essential means for determining the nationality of persons obliged to leave the country,” a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry wrote in response to an inquiry from DW. “Travel documents can only be issued once their nationality has been established. Hearings like these have been conducted on a legal basis in Germany for years, and their usefulness is proven.” She added that other EU countries use similar procedures.

    Hearings ‘nontransparent’
The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) estimates that in 2020 there were about 250,000 people living in Germany without legal residency status. When he took office as Interior Minister in 2018, Horst Seehofer promised to reduce this figure, and according to the DGAP about 22,000 people were deported in 2019.

German officials say people’s countries of origin share responsibility for ensuring that they are returned if not permitted to remain, and authorities have accused the embassies of African nations of being slow to issue the necessary documents that would permit deportations. The subject comes up whenever Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Africa, and some diplomats from African countries have privately said that Germany’s government of exerts excessive pressure on them to comply.

Members of German opposition parties also criticize the practice. “Every one of these ominous summonses is one too many,” the Left party’s Jelpke told DW. “The proceedings are nontransparent, and those affected have repeatedly reported infringements of their rights.” Moreover, she said, the criteria used to determine countries of origin are entirely unclear. Jelpke says that Sierra Leoneans have been deported to Nigeria.

Interior Ministry officials reject such criticism. “People are only positively identified if those conducting the hearing are convinced that they are indeed citizens of their country,” according to the spokesperson. “People under obligation to leave the country are also free to bring in a legal adviser.”

    Guinea: Imprisonment, torture
In 2018, Germany’s government signed an agreement with Amadou’s homeland, Guinea, to speed up deportations. By October 2020, 40 people had been sent back under the agreement. The West African country has been troubled by unrest for some time, since the president, Alpha Conde, decided to continue in office for a third term following a change to the constitution in March.

“Again and again, in the past months and years, civilians have been killed, injured, or arbitrarily imprisoned by the Guinean security forces,” Jelpke said. “Deportations to that country constitute a serious threat to the life and physical integrity of the deportee.”

Amadou said the son of an influential commander in Guinea’s security forces had abused him for years, but when he reported it to the police, he was jailed. He said he has been tortured on numerous occasions and almost killed after leaving prison. That is another reason why he can’t imagine appearing before a commission from his home country. “I don’t trust them,” he said. “I’m afraid of them. They’re working with the government.””

Police have uncovered an unknown number of weapons, including at least one Kalashnikov rifle which had been buried in an Utrecht park, the Telegraaf said on Monday. The hiding place was found following a tip-off to television crime show Crime Desk, and may be linked to gangs run by Dutch Moroccan criminals. The park is located in the Kanaleneiland district of the city, where many supporters of gang leader Ridouan Taghi live, the paper said. The guns were uncovered on Thursday in a major operation involving explosives experts and metal detectors, to alert police to any potential booby traps. The Telegraaf said it knows how many guns were seized, but that the information is being kept secret in the interests of the investigation.

Dutch jihadi bride Angela B is back in the Netherlands and has been arrested, the public prosecution department has confirmed. The 25-year-old from Soest was picked up on her arrival at Schiphol airport along with her three-year-old son and has been remanded in custody for two weeks. B, a Dutch convert, is said to have recruited other young women to go to Syria. She left the Netherlands at the age of 19 in 2014, and married a Portuguese jihadi who was later killed, before marrying again. The AD said last November that B had remained in IS-controlled parts of Syria for as long as possible, and ended up in a prison camp in the north east of the country. Last year she managed to escape along with a group of other women. B then made her way to the Dutch embassy in Turkey. The government has said it will not actively try to bring Dutch nationals back because it is too dangerous for civil servants to make the trip but that it will help nationals who reach a Dutch diplomatic station. Her child has been handed over to social services, the public prosecution department said.
