Reader’s Links for December 8, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. France: Macron calls for list of 300 to 500 ‘Black or Arab historical figures’ to name after streets and statutes
    https://rmx.news/article/article/france-macron-calls-for-list-of-300-to-500-black-or-arab-historical-figures-to-name-after-streets-and-statutes

“French President Emmanuel Macron’s Friday interview with online media Brut, in which he spoke against alleged discriminatory police interventions against immigrants and called for the creation of a list of 300 to 500 “Black or Arab historical figures” who should have public places, monuments and streets named after them

Macron’s new proposal has sparked controversy in France and further discredits claims that he believes that the demographic replacement of the ethnic French is a negative trend for the country.
“There is a whole part of our collective history which is not represented, there is a whole part of our history which speaks to our youth who are black, coming from Africa or Maghreb areas and who have their heroes,” Macron said in the interview.

“What I would like is for historians and those who find themselves in these fragmented stories to be able to choose them. I would like there to be some kind of call for collective contribution. And we have 300 to 500 names, and we have this catalog by March where can make names and statues. Our story is the combination of all these stories,” he said.

In the interview, Macron also said he said those who speak Arabic at home are an asset for France.

“That your family speaks Arabic in France, it is a chance for France… Millions of our young people come from the African continent and we did not know how to speak to them,” said Macron.

This year, Macron introduced his plan to teach Arabic in schools as well as Arabic culture, which leading figures in the conservative movement said would only promote separatism.

The interview lasted over two hours, with Macron being asked about police violence, separatism and coexistence, and various other topics such as the current COVID-19 pandemic and ecological issues.

In reaction to his drive to curb perceived police violence against minority groups, two French police unions, Alliance and Unité SGP-Police-FO, have already responded on Saturday, saying they will desist from making identity checks.

“No, the police are not racist,” the Alliance union said in a leaflet and a video posted on social networks calling on the police to “stop doing identity checks”.

The statement denounces “the distrust of the state vis-à-vis the police” and “dubious allusions to the actions of the police [and] the presumption of guilt for racism or stops based on race should not arise.”

The statement also warned: “It is shameful. The president will get the police he deserves.”

In the Brut interview, Macron said, “When you have a skin color that is not white, you are much more controlled”.”

  3. Ratcliffe: China Is the Only Country with ‘Capability’ and ‘Specific Plan’ of ‘Taking Away the American Dream’
    1 minute

On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe stated that no other country comes close to posing the threat to the U.S. that China does and “no other country has the capability of essentially taking away the American Dream and a specific plan to do so, and the intelligence is clear.”

Ratcliffe said, “There are a lot of people who, for economic reasons, don’t want China to be our greatest threat. There are a lot of people who, for political reasons, don’t want China to be our greatest threat in America. But the intelligence doesn’t lie. China is our greatest threat, and it’s not even close, no other country has the capability of essentially taking away the American Dream and a specific plan to do so, and the intelligence is clear.”

  4. Report: Alleged Chinese Spy Raised Money For Eric Swalwell, Planted Intern In His Office

An alleged Chinese spy bundled campaign contributions for California Rep. Eric Swalwell and planted an intern in the Democrat’s congressional office, according to a new report.

U.S. intelligence officials said that Christine Fang, the alleged Chinese operative, cozied up to multiple politicians in the California Bay Area between 2011 and 2015 at the direction of China’s Ministry of State Security, its internal spy agency, Axios reported Monday night.

Meanwhile, John Ratcliffe, the director of national intelligence, revealed in a Thursday opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal that Chinese agents have targeted U.S. lawmakers more than any other country, including Russia and Iran, in order to shape U.S. policy in favor of Beijing.

Ratcliffe said in a Sunday interview that he had briefed the House and Senate Intelligence Committees on the influence efforts. Swalwell, who was elected to Congress in 2012, was appointed to the House committee on Jan. 14, 2015.

  5. Inauguration Committee Fails to Pass Resolution Acknowledging Biden as President-Elect

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies voted down a resolution to acknowledge Joe Biden as the president-elect as President Donald Trump and other Republicans continue lawsuits challenging the results of the Nov. 3 election, according to several members of the bipartisan panel.

There are three Republicans and three Democrats on the panel from both the House and Senate, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). Sens. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) are also on the committee.

Republicans said they made the decision because there are election-related processes that need to play out first before a president-elect can be decided.

Supreme Court Orders Trump’s Pennsylvania Case Moved – Justice Alito Just Decided To Move It To The Safe Harbor Deadline
    What’s Happening:

Since Election Day, President Trump and his legal team have battled to protect our election integrity.

They are fighting to ensure our democracy is not taken over by fraud or wrongdoing. To that end, they (and many other Republicans) have brought numerous cases to court.

Some of those cases have not worked out in their favor, as various state-level judges (Democrat appointees) have chosen to uphold unconstitutional rules.

But the story is far from over. Supreme Court Justice Alito has just made a decision on a crucial case.

  7. Biden Pledge to Rejoin U.N. Would Hurt U.S. Position Against China, Experts Say

    Jack Beyrer – December 4, 2020 6:50 PM

President-elect Joe Biden’s pledge to reengage with the United Nations and other international organizations could weaken America’s position against China, according to foreign policy experts.

On the campaign trail, Biden criticized the Trump administration’s withdrawal writ large from multilateral institutions, saying that he will rejoin several organizations that the White House declared as hostile to American interests, such as the U.N. Human Rights Council, U.N. Population Fund, and the World Health Organization. Some critics said returning to the table will end institutional hostility to U.S. interests. American Foreign Policy Council research fellow Michael Sobolik, however, spoke to the dangers of rejoining organizations like the U.N. Population Fund in a conversation with the Washington Free Beacon.

“Funding the U.N. Population Fund carries significant risk for the United States, namely, being complicit in China’s coercive population control measures in Xinjiang,” Sobolik said. “Cursory research reveals official links between China’s National Health Commission and Xinjiang’s health commission, the local government agency responsible for funding the sterilization and abortion of Uighur women and babies. This connection, while unsurprising, should deeply concern U.S. policymakers, given [the] U.N. Population Fund’s work with Chinese family planning agencies.”

  8. Arizona Supreme Court Agrees to Hear GOP Election Challenge Lawsuit

Arizona GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward said she’s filing an appeal with the state’s Supreme Court to challenge the certification of the Nov. 3 election results.

Ward told local station KTAR-TV that she filed an appeal with the Arizona Supreme Court on Dec. 4 to reverse the state’s certification. The court confirmed that it received her appeal on Monday, saying it would decide the matter without an oral argument, the news outlet reported.

It came after a Maricopa County judge ruled that Ward’s petition failed to prove any fraud occurred when she tried to challenge the results in the county, which includes Phoenix.

  9. Can Commercial Partnerships Save NASA From Biden?
    Mike Howard
    7-8 minutes

In a media teleconference last week, NASA’s Acting Associate Administrator for International and Interagency Relations Mike Gold, and Director of Commercial Spaceflight Development Phil McAlister announced that two U.S. companies, Lunar Outpost of Golden, Colorado, and Masten Space Systems of Mojave, California; and two foreign companies, ispace Japan of Tokyo, and ispace Europe of Luxembourg, had been selected to collect lunar resources under the Artemis program.

The contracts require each company to “collect a small amount of lunar regolith from any location on the Moon, provide imagery of the collection, and the collected material, along with data that identifies the collection location.” After collection, an “in-situ” transfer of ownership will take place, and the material becomes the sole property of NASA.

  10. Terrorism: A Warning from Iran to Europe

    by Richard Kemp
    December 8, 2020 at 5:00 am

Last month the trial began in Belgium of Assadolah Assadi and three other Iranians accused of planning a bomb attack in Paris in 2018. Since 2015 Assadi had been the most senior officer of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security in Europe, at the time operating under diplomatic cover at the Iranian embassy in Vienna. He is the first Iranian government official to be tried by an EU country for terrorist offences, despite numerous attack attempts on EU soil ordered by Tehran.

State supported terrorism is not just an act in itself but also an instrument of national power and coercion. Together, these plots were a malevolent message and clear threat to Europe that unfortunately have been received and acted upon as intended in London, Berlin, Paris and Brussels.

Assadi’s failed plot was reportedly ordered by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and approved by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. His target was a rally for the National Council of Resistance of Iran, with 80,000 supporters present and attended by former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, President Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and several British and European members of parliament. The explosives, allegedly brought into Europe from Iran by Assadi on a commercial flight, were TATP, the same type as was used to kill 22 and wound 800 in a jihadist attack at the Manchester Arena, UK, in 2017 and the London 7/7 bombings that killed 52 and wounded 700 in 2005. The message was clear. In March Assadi, who has refused to attend his own trial claiming diplomatic immunity, threatened retaliation if he is convicted. The Iranian government has also warned of a “proportionate response” against countries involved in the trial.

    • Jonathan Spyer:
      Iran’s Terror Campaign in Europe

…While the threat of activities by non-state Sunni jihadi organizations remains high on the agenda of many western countries, the flouting by Iran of global norms in pursuit of the regime’s perceived enemies has received little focus. The Antwerp trial may serve to change this.…

The plot to bomb the Paris NCRI rally should not be seen as a single, stand-alone event. Rather, it reflects a notable pattern of activity by certain Iranian state bodies, conducted via Iranian representations abroad, often with the participation of locals of Iranian or other descent. The specific Iranian state organizations engaged in this ongoing campaign are the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).…

      [details of a series]

The alleged Paris bombing thus forms part of an extensive campaign of harassment and violence by Iranian state bodies against supposed enemies of Iran on European soil.

Iran policy may soon be subject to significant change under a new US Administration. Any attempt to renegotiate an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is likely to include reference to the paramilitary and irregular military activity undertaken in a variety of locations by Iran – in the Mid-East region and beyond it. The ongoing Iranian campaign of terror in Europe should form a major part of that discussion.

  11. Turkey: Legitimizing Extremist Violence

A Turkish court has censored news reports about a visit by Defense Minister Hulusi Akar (pictured at left) to the grave of a convicted terrorist who was the founder of an illegal Islamist group, the Great Eastern Islamic Raiders’ Front (IBDA-C). (Photo by Adem Altan/AFP via Getty Images)

In its early years (2002-2010), many Western leaders generously hailed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s governance with biased euphemisms such as “post-modern Islamism” or “moderate Islamism.” In this view, Turkish Islamism and Erdo?an deserved every support Western nations could give. Turkey would be the role model in which Islam and democracy could co-habit, a model that would inspire less-democratic Arab nations. Palestinians, Iraqis, Egyptians, Jordanians and other Muslims in the Maghreb would supposedly wish to become more moderate and less violent. This bizarre political experience has sadly ended with the opposite result: Turks have become less moderate and more violent.

This summer, for example, there were press reports that Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, formerly chief of the Turkish military, had visited the grave of the founder of an illegal Islamist group. A court order censored news reports about Akar’s visit to the graves of the poet Necip Faz?l K?sakürek and the religious ideologue Izzet Berdi?, better known as Salih Mirzabeyo?lu, the founder of the Great Eastern Islamic Raiders’ Front (IBDA-C). IBDA-C was an early-day Turkish version of Islamic State (ISIS), known for its horrific methods of torture and killing. K?sakürek is Erdo?an’s favorite poet and IBDA-C was founded on his ideas featuring Islamic supremacy.
