Reader’s Links on October 21, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. After Schumer Tries To Close Down The Senate – GOP Senators Just Stood Up And Shut Him Down
    By Ben Dutka|October 20, 2020

Since last week’s Supreme Court hearings, Democrats have continued to rail against the potential confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett. They believe it should wait until after the presidential election.

The latest attempt to derail the process came from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — just yesterday, he moved to close down the Senate until after the November election.

  3. What Killed Michael Brown?

Shelby Steele’s new documentary delivers a damning indictment of liberalism.

In the wake of the violent worldwide protests that followed the death in police custody of black Minneapolis resident George Floyd, it is easy to forget that what created the conditions for all that racial chaos was the 2014 shooting of black Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. Yes, the Black Lives Matter movement began before that, after George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. But BLM didn’t pick up steam and acquire national recognition until after Brown. And Zimmerman wasn’t a cop; it was Michael Brown’s death that really galvanized what author Heather Mac Donald called “the war on cops” and created the mythic slogan, “Hands up, don’t shoot,” which the leftist news media promoted in spite of an absence of evidence or witnesses that Brown ever said it.

The brilliant scholar Shelby Steele has now revisited that complex tragedy in a new documentary called What Killed Michael Brown?, written and narrated by Steele, and beautifully directed and filmed by his award-winning filmmaker son Eli. Steele père, you will remember, is the black conservative author of The Content of Our Character and White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era. His film seeks to answer what Steele calls “a daring question, one that a group like Black Lives Matter would forbid: is Michael Brown in any way responsible for his own death?”

  4. the guardian –Rudy Giuliani faces questions after compromising scene in new Borat film

Trump’s personal attorney has indiscreet encounter with actor playing Borat’s daughter in hotel room during pandemic

This article contains spoilers about Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Follow the latest twists and turns of the 2020 US election

The reputation of Rudy Giuliani could be set for a further blow with the release of highly embarrassing footage in Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to Borat.

In the film, released on Friday, the former New York mayor and current personal attorney to Donald Trump is seen reaching into his trousers and apparently touching his genitals while reclining on a bed in the presence of the actor playing Borat’s daughter, who is posing as a TV journalist.

Following an obsequious interview for a fake conservative news programme, the pair retreat at her suggestion for a drink to the bedroom of a hotel suite, which is rigged with concealed cameras.

After she removes his microphone, Giuliani, 76, can be seen lying back on the bed, fiddling with his untucked shirt and reaching into his trousers. They are then interrupted by Borat who runs in and says: “She’s 15. She’s too old for you.”

Representatives for Giuliani have not replied to the Guardian’s requests for comment.

Word of the incident first emerged on 7 July, when Giuliani called New York police to report the intrusion of an unusually-dressed man.

“This guy comes running in, wearing a crazy, what I would say was a pink transgender outfit,” Giuliani told the New York Post. “It was a pink bikini, with lace, underneath a translucent mesh top, it looked absurd. He had the beard, bare legs, and wasn’t what I would call distractingly attractive.

“This person comes in yelling and screaming, and I thought this must be a scam or a shakedown, so I reported it to the police. He then ran away,” Giuliani said. The police found no crime had been committed.

Giuliani continued: “I only later realised it must have been Sacha Baron Cohen. I thought about all the people he previously fooled and I felt good about myself because he didn’t get me.”

Viewers may be less convinced that Baron Cohen, reprising his role as the bumbling reporter Borat Sagdiyev, and Maria Bakalova, who plays his daughter, Tutar, had no success.

In the film Borat is dispatched by the Kazakh government back to the US to present a bribe to an ally of Donald Trump in order to ingratiate his country with the administration. After the monkey earmarked for the gift is indisposed, Borat’s supposedly underage offspring becomes the replacement present.

Even before he reaches into his trousers, Giuliani does not appear to acquit himself especially impressively during the encounter. Flattered and flirtatious, he drinks scotch, coughs, fails to socially distance and claims Trump’s speedy actions in the spring saved a million Americans from dying of Covid. He also agrees – in theory at least – to eat a bat with his interviewer.

Giuliani has become a key figure in the late stages of the US presidential election after obtaining a laptop hard drive purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden and left at a repair shop in Delaware.

His efforts to unearth political dirt on Trump’s rival for the White House mean that the film’s mortifying footage can be seen as an attempt to undermine Giuliani’s credibility. The film, released on Amazon Prime less than a fortnight before the election, ends with an instruction for viewers to vote.

Although unfortunate, the circumstances of the setup appear consensual, with Giuliani led to believe he was being courted. Bakalova, 24, is highly plausible in the sting, despite also having to pretend, for the benefit of viewers, to be a feral child posing as a far-right journalist.

As with the first film, which made $262m on release in 2006 and won a Golden Globe for Baron Cohen, the most troubling scenes are those which reveal deep-seated prejudice among the American people.

Baron Cohen’s real-life broadsides against platforms he feels enable antisemitism are echoed in the film, in which Borat learns through Facebook that the Holocaust “was nothing but a fairytale”.

He is corrected following a conversation with two elderly Jewish women, one of whom, Judith Dim Evans, died after filming, aged 88. Last week her estate filed a suit against the film-makers, claiming that she was “horrified and upset” upon learning “the movie was actually a comedy intended to mock the Holocaust and Jewish culture”.

However, Deadline suggests the film-makers did appraise Dim Evans of the film’s true targets after her scenes were shot, and that there is footage of this. They are also said to be hopeful her family may reconsider once they have seen the film, which ends with a dedication to Dim Evans and the link to a website set up in her honour.

As the election nears and Democrats become worried they might not defeat President Trump, their façade is dropping, and they are showing how much they hate America and want a full-blown overthrow of the Bill of Rights and Constitution.

The New Republic, an iconic liberal magazine that has been influential to Democrats for generations, published an article by staff writer Osita Nwanevu on Monday calling for an end to Constitutional rule because he does not like that judge Amy Coney Barrett will likely be confirmed into the Supreme Court by the Senate.

“Having won a clear Electoral College victory, Trump has taken the opportunities he has been given to nominate three. Senate Republicans have been approving them through the process the Constitution set out. They acted strategically to hold one of those seats open,” Nwanevu wrote.

  8. Germany: Dresden knife attack likely motivated by Islamic extremism

German police say they have arrested an asylum seeker suspected of killing one person and wounding another in Dresden two weeks ago.

Prosecutors are now treating the deadly stabbing as a possible terrorist attack.

A 20-year-old Syrian who stabbed one person to death and wounded another in Dresden was likely motivated by Islamic extremism, German prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The man was arrested on Tuesday evening, police and prosecutors in the eastern German city said. They said the suspect came to authorities’ attention as a result of examining evidence at the crime scene.

“Investigations have shown that the dreadful killing in Dresden had an Islamist background,” Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht said. “Islamist terror is a major, enduring threat to our society that we have to tackle determinedly.”

According to the Bild newspaper, that evidence was DNA traces found on the attack weapon, which police discovered not far from the scene of the October 4 crime. The paper said the suspect’s DNA was already recorded in police databases and cited a prosecutor as saying that the man already had a police record.

The authorities said the suspect had an extensive criminal record, including charges of soliciting support for a foreign terrorist organization, and charges of bodily injury, and making threats.

The Dresden stabbing “draws attention, once again, to the dangers of Islamist violence” said Germany’s Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.

“Utmost vigilance is necessary, whatever the form of extremism and terrorism.”

The alleged attacker came to Germany in 2015 and applied for asylum, according to Der Spiegel magazine. Even though his application was rejected, he has managed to stay in Germany under the so-called “tolerated” status which German authorities give to rejected asylum seekers who cannot be deported.

The two victims, both from the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, were visiting Dresden together. One 55-year-old man died of his injuries in hospital, while a 53-year-old survived despite having been badly wounded.

He had been living in Germany under “tolerated” status granted to people whose asylum requests have been rejected, but who cannot be deported.

He had only recently been released from a juvenile detention centre, on September 29, German media reported.

Police and the public prosecutor’s office in Dresden said the examination of evidence had led to the Syrian man and “raised the question of an Islamist attack”.

A report in the Bild daily said his DNA was detected on the knife, which police found near the scene of the crime in the city centre.

The DNA was already stored in police databases, the report said.

  10. China Is Killing Americans with Fentanyl – Deliberately

    by Gordon G. Chang

“I’m not alleging any kind of conspiracy, I suppose, but just the plain facts of it: fentanyl and Covid both came from China, China’s our main rival, they’re benefitting from the deaths of many thousands of Americans,” Tucker Carlson noted on his October 16 show.

China’s regime has been pushing fentanyl into the United States for years.

Fatal drug overdoses in the U.S. last year hit a record 70,980, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those deaths, 36,500, were from synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Cocaine and methamphetamine fatalities were also up, largely because these substances were mixed with fentanyl.

It is, as Vanda Felbab-Brown of the Brookings Institution states in a July paper, “the deadliest drug epidemic in U.S. history.”

There is no doubt where this drug comes from. “Since 2013, China has been the principal source of the fentanyl flooding the U.S. illicit drug market—or of the precursor agents from which fentanyl is produced, often in Mexico,” reports Felbab-Brown.

A Drug Enforcement Administration Intelligence Report issued in January comes to the same conclusion as to the source of deadly fentanyl.

  12. CBC – Muslim community says police doing nothing after break-ins at 4 Montreal-area mosques

Montreal police confirm they are investigating break-ins, but say it is too early to link crimes

Three Montreal-area mosques have been broken into in the last month and a fourth was hit back in March, but members of the Muslim community say authorities are doing very little, despite video evidence linking the crimes.

“A six-year-old child could look at these videos and realize it is the exact same person, because the person is not even wearing a mask,” said Tariq Khan, who volunteers at the Al-Salam Mosque downtown.

He said his mosque was broken into earlier this month and a small amount of money was taken. Khan provided evidence to the police.

Police did manage to track down a suspect and make an arrest, Khan said, but the man was then released with a promise to appear in court.

Khan said the man then broke into two more mosques in the following days.

On Saturday, a small amount of money was taken from a mosque in Brossard after a suspect smashed the door to get inside.

Then on Monday, the windows of a mosque in Pierrefonds were smashed, but it appears nothing was taken.

Mosque members from Pierrefonds to Brossard have joined forces to produce the video evidence linking the crimes, Khan said.

Last March, a mosque in the borough of St-Laurent was targeted as well. Khan said video evidence again shows the same man breaking in. Khan said the suspect was arrested and released then as well.

CBC was sent still images captured from surveillance camera footage that appear to show the same man in the same clothing at each scene, but police have not confirmed the evidence.

Both Montreal and Longueuil police would say only that they’re investigating the latest break-ins. Police are not confirming there was an arrest.

Montreal police say it is too soon to determine if the incidents are related.

“It’s beyond ridiculous that, despite showing irrefutable evidence, despite such co-ordination between the community, and showing everything, every single time the person was detained, and released,” Khan said.

He called the situation “borderline shameful” and said police are not taking the situation seriously.

Khan said the inaction is frustrating not just for the Muslim community, but for all Canadians who feel that police appear to do nothing about petty crime even when the evidence is staring them in the face.

“If someone’s car is broken into or the glass is smashed or it’s a smaller theft, every single person I’ve talked to says, ‘don’t call the police, they’re not going to do anything anyways,'” Khan said.

“That is the level of despair reached for the average Canadian who works very hard for their dollars and pays very heavy taxes.”

  13. FBI announces Iran, Russia are attempting to spread election disinformation

DNI John Ratcliffe and FBI Director Christopher Wray alert the American people to election meddling from Iran and Russia.

    • The hosting service that previously carried the Proud Boys domain canceled the registration after Google Cloud notified the customer that a nonprofit group had raised concerns about the controversial organization, said Ladd, the Google Cloud spokesman.

Following the action from the hosting service, the domain appears to have been left unsecured, allowing anyone on the Internet to take control of it and use it to send out the menacing messages, said Trevor Davis, CEO of CounterAction, a Washington-based digital intelligence firm.

The lapse, which began on Oct. 8, “likely made them vulnerable to this kind of hijacking,” Davis said. “Bad actors are constantly scanning the Internet for opportunities. Given the public profile of the Proud Boys and the likelihood that whoever’s sending these emails has access to a voter file, this appears to be opportunism.”

An Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with metadata in at least one email had previously been reported, pointing to its likely use in scam or phishing operations, said Cindy Otis, a former CIA analyst and vice president of analysis for Alethea Group, an organization combating online threats and misinformation.

The Proud Boys rose to national prominence last month during the first presidential debate between Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, when the president passed up an invitation by moderator Chris Wallace, of Fox News, to denounce White supremacists. When Biden suggested that Trump denounce the Proud Boys, he said they should “stand back and stand by” — a comment that was widely celebrated on social media by the group as a call to action.

Memes circulated online with the words integrated into the Proud Boys logo. One doctored image showed Trump wearing one of the Proud Boys’ signature polo shirts. Another online poster used the moment to advertise T-shirts and hoodies bearing the group’s logo and the words “PROUD BOYS STANDING BY.”

The group’s leaders say they do not support White supremacy, but they had a contingent at 2017’s notorious Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. The Proud Boys also have been frequent participants in the protests demonstrating against coronavirus shutdowns and, more recently, the protests in Portland, Ore. Facebook has banned the group as a hate group, and the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies it as a hate group and says its leaders “regularly spout white nationalist memes and maintain affiliations with known extremists.”

    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/10/21/boko-haram-kills-chad-soldiers/

“Boko Haram fighters killed six Chadian soldiers in the Lake Chad region, where deadly jihadist attacks against civilians and security forces are on the rise, the army said Tuesday.

Security experts say Boko Haram, which originated in Nigeria in 2009, has established bases on islets dotting Lake Chad, a vast swampy expanse in the border region straddled by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

The soldiers were killed while patrolling a group of islets on the Chad-Nigeria border, army spokesman General Azem Bermendoa Agouna told AFP.

Twelve other soldiers were wounded and the military killed around 10 “terrorists,” he said.

The Chadian army launched an offensive against Boko Haram in April after some 100 soldiers died in an attack by the group on one of its bases.

President Idriss Deby then claimed to have pushed the jihadists out. But attacks have continued despite the military operation.

Fighters from a dissident branch, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group, are also extending their grip and influence around Lake Chad.

At least 36,000 people have been killed and around three million displaced in the decade-long Islamist conflict which spread from northeast Nigeria to Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

Those countries have formed a regional military coalition to fight the jihadists.”

“It doesn’t matter to Iran who will win the upcoming presidential election in the US because the White House will have to surrender to the Iranian nation, President Hassan Rouhani said.

“It is by no means important for the Islamic Republic of Iran who will win the US presidential election, because any government taking power in the US would have to surrender to the Iranian nation,” Rouhani said at a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday.

Today, one can definitely conclude that the US’ actions against the Iranian nation have ended in failure, the president underlined.

He also noted that the termination of the UN arms embargo on Iran has marked a victory for rationalism against force.

“It doesn’t matter what amounts of weapons we purchase or sell with the arms embargo lifted. What is important is that the logic of right and righteousness and the logic of law and rationalism defeated force and bullying, and that the Iranian nation achieved its rights,” the president added.

Rouhani also highlighted the failure of the US and the Zionist regime to convince the JCPOA parties to withdraw from the nuclear deal, saying the Islamic Republic behaved wisely and adopted a “very complicated and calculated policy” after Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear accord.

The president further underlined Iran’s efforts to boost non-oil exports despite the enemy’s disruptive measures, adding, “Diversification of the country’s non-oil exports prevented the enemy from obstructing or disrupting our country’s non-oil exports.””

The Leader also underlined that any regime that sits at the negotiating table with Israel will lose popularity among its nation.

“Muslim nations will never accept the humiliation of compromising with the Zionist regime. If the US thinks they can solve the region’s problem in this way, they are wrong. 20. Greece Sees ‘Imperial Fantasies’ in Turkey Maritime Claims, Wants Tougher EU Action

“Greece urged the European Union on Wednesday to reconsider its customs union with Turkey in response to Ankara’s continued gas exploration in contested Mediterranean areas, deploring what it termed Ankara’s “imperial fantasies.”

After meeting Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Nicosia, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said they all agreed that Ankara is “blatantly” violating international law.

“Turkey’s leadership has fantasies of imperial behavior with aggressive behavior from Syria to Libya, Somalia to Cyprus, from the Aegean to the Caucus,” he said.

The EU should also take note of Turkey’s ‘many violations’ of the EU-Turkey customs union accord, Mitsotakis said.

“It is not possible for a state, a third state, a country which is a candidate for EU membership, to be exempt from (customs) duties, to reap the benefits of the common market but at the same time threaten the eastern borders of the European Union,” he said.

Huge gas finds off Egypt and Israel in recent years have prompted a rush of Mediterranean states claiming waters for future hydrocarbons research, exposing deep and longstanding disagreements.

Tensions between NATO allies Turkey and Greece over maritime boundaries have rekindled since August, when Turkey dispatched a seismic survey vessel to a disputed area. Ankara has also sent a drill ship to a position off the coast of ethnically split Cyprus.

The attempt to stake rival claims has also brought other players into the fray; Turkey and Libya agreed on sea boundaries last year, a pact which Athens says infringes its continental shelf.

This year Greece signed a deal outlining a maritime boundary with Egypt, infuriating Turkey which says it encroaches on its territory.

Greece, Egypt and Cyprus hold regular summits to further regional cooperation. Sisi described the tripartite cooperation mechanism as “unique”.

The accords defining maritime borders, Sisi said, reflected the will to benefit from “wealth available, especially promising oil and gas reserves”.

“We agreed on the need to address those escalatory policies that destabilize the region, and the need to coordinate with international partners to take appropriate measures to maintain regional security requirements,” Sisi said.”

  21. Yemen Calls for Firm Int’l Stance against Iran Hostilities
    https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/2576806/yemen-calls-firm-int%E2%80%99l-stance-against-iran-hostilities

“Yemen has urged the international community, especially UN Security Council member states, to break the silence on Iranian aggression in the war-torn country.

“Iran’s aggressive policies undermine peacemaking efforts and constitute a blatant violation of international law and an outright challenge to international resolutions relevant to the Yemeni crisis”, said Information Minister Muammar Al-Eryani.

His statements follow the Yemeni government’s complaint to the Security Council on Tehran’s appointment of Revolutionary Guard leader Hassan Eyrlou as a plenipotentiary and extraordinary ambassador of Iran to Yemen.

Eyrlou was sent to Sanaa, which has been under control of Houthi coupists since they seized control of the Yemeni capital in September 2014.

“For Tehran to escalate by appointing a military officer in Sanaa and continuing to export arms to Houthis reshapes the contours of the conflict in Yemen and makes for a blatant aggression against Yemenis, and is considered an attempt to gain geographic influence in Yemen,” Eryani noted.

He explained that Iran seeks to transform Yemen into a launch pad for chaos and terrorism in the region.

“It (Iran) seeks to sow chaos and terrorism in the region and to threaten neighboring countries, energy sources and international navigation routes,” Eryani said.

He also reaffirmed that the recent move proves that Houthis are nothing more than an Iranian proxy and are unable to independently make the decision for peace or war.

“They (Houthis) are just a cheap tool that answers to orders issued from Revolutionary Guard operation rooms,” Eryani said, stressing that Houthi militias do not heed the suffering of Yemenis who are braving poor living conditions and a crippled economy.

Public rage sparked by the appointment of Eyrlou confirms that Yemenis are united in their refusal of all forms of Iranian presence in Yemen and that they oppose Tehran’s attempts to establish influence in the country, Eryani added.”

  22. German police detain Syrian suspected of killing tourist
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20201021-german-police-detain-syrian-suspected-of-killing-tourist/

“German police have arrested a 20-year-old Syrian suspected of attacking two tourists in the eastern city of Dresden at the start of October, killing one of them, police said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

The man was taken into custody late on Tuesday after investigators found traces linking him to the crime, Dresden police said in a statement.

Spiegel magazine reported that the suspect had been known to German authorities for years. He had been sentenced to more than two years in prison for incitement to a crime against the state and recruiting members for Daesh in the past.

The Syrian had come to Germany in 2015, at the peak of the migrant crisis, and been refused asylum, Spiegel said. It was unclear why he attacked his victims.

The victims, one aged 53 and the other 55, were German men from the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia on vacation in Dresden, according to the police. They were severely injured in the knife attack and the 55-year-old later died.

The arrest follows the beheading last week of a French teacher in a Paris suburb by a Chechen teenager for showing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in class.”

The announcement of 15 new TV series and films came during a content presentation on Tuesday just two years after the launch of Netflix’s first Turkish original show, “The Protector”.

Since the fantasy series’ release in late 2018, Netflix has launched several other Turkish original series, including historical docudrama “Rise of Empires: Ottoman” and “The Gift”.

Netflix has also recently expanded into Arabic-language originals, launching its first with the Jordan-set supernatural teen drama “Jinn” last year.

Upcoming Turkish series include “Midnight at the Pera Palace”, adapted from a non-fiction book by Charles King. The show will follow a young journalist as she discovers a portal to the year 1919 in Istanbul’s historic Pera Palace hotel, according to Variety.

Two new projects are due to start production soon, including a feature-length action and adventure film set on a submarine.

Other series announced on Tuesday include “Ersan Kuneri”, a sitcom set in the erotic film industry of the 1970s, and “Club”, following a seamstress working at a nightclub in the ’50s.

Netflix will also produce “Have You Ever Seen Butterflies?”, a feature film based on a 1999 play and written by award-winning actor-director Yilmaz Erdogan.

“We believe that Turkey is one of the major creative centers for great storytelling that resonates around the world,” said Pelin Distas, director of original content for Netflix in Turkey.

    https://gulfnews.com/uae/200-law-firms-suspended-in-uae-for-failing-to-comply-with-anti-money-laundering-procedures-1.74719052

“A total of 200 law firms in the UAE that had failed to comply with anti-money laundering procedures have been suspended from practicing for one month.

The Ministry of Justice has also called upon law firms to take necessary measures against money laundering and terrorist financing, Wam reported. The necessary legal measures are outlined in Federal Decree 20 of 2018 with regard to money laundering, executive regulations, and relevant ministerial decisions. The decree is part of the UAE’s efforts to address the risks associated with financial crimes.

    Combating money laundering
The Ministry emphasised the importance of law firms’ role in combating money laundering, as well as the need for lawyers to assume their role in fighting such crimes. Lawyers must also handle clients carefully, report suspicious transactions, and maintaining proper records, the Ministry urged. It added that it had taken recent action against non-compliant lawyers, in addition to the law firm suspensions.

    Penalties
Penalties for money laundering crimes include fines ranging from Dh50,000 to Dh5 million, and can also include the suspension and cancellation of licenses. In recent months, the Ministry of Justice has called upon registered lawyers to access the “Smart Lawyer” system on the Ministry website — elawyer.moj.gov.ae — or to contact the Ministry to update their information in Arabic and English, appoint a compliance officer for each office, and fill out questionnaires relating to procedural compliance. They were also directed through various official media and social media outlets to take all necessary measures to avoid administrative penalties.

The Ministry has explained that law firms suspension will be lifted once lawyers in charge of the department’s legal management office prove that they have carried out procedures to fulfil their obligations under Ministerial Resolution 533 of 2019 on combating money laundering.”

  26. UPDATE 2: Egypt, Greece, Cyprus agree on combating escalation policies in East Med
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/388860/Egypt/Politics-/UPDATE–Egypt,-Greece,-Cyprus-agree-on-combating-e.aspx

“Egypt, Greece and Cyprus agreed on the necessity of “combating escalation policies aimed at shaking the region’sstability,” in an apparent reference to Turkey’s policies in the East Mediterranean.

At a press conference Wednesday in Nicosia following the eighth tripartite summit, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said the talks witnessed an exchange of viewpoints, mainly on the East Mediterranean amid “provocative policies posed by international law violations, threats of armed force, encroachment on sovereign rights of neighbouring countries and supporting terrorism and extremism.”

“We have agreed on the importance of addressing these escalation policies [threatening] the stability of the region, and coordinating with international partners to take measures to maintain the requirements of regional security,” El-Sisi said.

The eighth tripartite summit is held amid tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean region over Ankara’s hunt for gas in the region in violation of the territorial waters of Greece and Cyprus, two close allies of Egypt.

Last week, Turkey said it will restart operations of a survey ship that it withdrew in September, further straining the possibility of talks.

The summit also aims at following up on the progress made by the previous seven trilateral summits and following up on joint projects implemented under the tripartite mechanism

Egypt’s president reiterated support of Cyprus’ efforts aiming at a permanent and comprehensive settlement to the Cypriot dispute in line with the UN Security Council resolutions towards the reunification of the country.

El-Sisi said the talks also tackled the Libyan crisis, affirming that the comprehensive political solution was the only means to achieve stability in the country in accordance with agreements discussed during the Berlin Conference and Cairo Declaration on Libya.

The leaders stressed the importance of maintaining the unity of the Libyan territory and the necessity of an exit by all foreign forces, the dismantling of terrorist militias and their disarmament and the unification of Libyan institutions.

The summit also discussed the peace process in the Middle East, El-Sisi said, where they agreed on the importance of continued efforts towards a settlement to the Palestinian crisis on the basis of international accords.

The three leaders affirmed the necessity of ending the current stalemate and the resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel.

The Syrian crisis was also tackled during the summit. The three leaders condemned the “illegal military presence on Syrian territory and attempts to alter the population’s composition in northern Syrian regions.”

Prior to the summit, El-Sisi held separate meetings with his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to tackle mutual relations.”

    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2020/10/323289/islamophobia-mosques-in-france-under-police-protection-after-threats/

“France’s Minister of Interior Gerald Darmanin announced on Wednesday that he put mosques in two cities under the protection of local police following threats of violence.

The two cities include Bordeaux and Beziers in the south of France.

“Such acts are unacceptable on the soil of the Republic,” said the minister in a tweet today.

Radio station France Bleu reported that leaders of Ar-rahma Mosque in Beziers filed a complaint with local police after a Facebook user called on angry citizens to set the place of worship on fire.

The message inspired others to join in, urging the hate crime. Police managed to identify those who supported the incitement, according to the same source.

  29. Italy Arrests Moroccans, Tunisians in Major Drug Bust
    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2020/10/323258/italy-arrests-moroccans-tunisians-in-major-drug-bust/

“Italian police arrested this week 19 Moroccans and Tunisians, including eight undocumented immigrants, who had a drug monopoly based out of Sassuolo, north-central Italy.

Italian outlet il Resto del Carlino reported Tuesday that the network also operated in the cities of Modena, Bologna, Reggio Emilia, and Mantua, dealing primarily in hashish (cannabis resin) and cocaine.

The source says the Moroccan-Tunisian drug ring executed 4,500 sales in Italy over the course of a year.

A local security source told il Resto del Carlino that the Maghrebi suspects are aged between 21 and 40 years and many do not have fixed addresses. “Three of the ‘bosses’ lived in Reggio Emilia, two are currently wanted,” the source added.

The security source also said the drug network’s clientele included young people who often contacted the dealers on weekends.

An investigation into the Moroccan-Tunisian drug ring began in October 2019 at the initiative of the public prosecutor of Modena. Security operations allowed authorities to break up a vast network of drug dealing linked to the monopoly, primarily in the cities of Sassuolo, Modena, and Carpi.

The drug network also had “offshoots” in the cities of Mantua, Reggio Emilia, and Bologna, and was “capable of handling large quantities of hashish and cocaine, destined to supply a large number of customers,” il Resto del Carlino reported.

Italian police previously arrested 18 individuals linked to the Moroccan-Tunisian drug ring and seized a total of 10 kilograms of drugs belonging to the network.

Italy is home to more than 440,000 Moroccans. The Mediterranean country is among the popular destinations for the Moroccan diaspora in Europe.

The country is also a destination for undocumented migration from North Africa.

Italy deported 783 undocumented Moroccan migrants in 2019.

Morocco and Tunisia are both on Italy’s list of countries to which it considers it safe to repatriate rejected asylum-seekers and irregular migrants. The classification, which Italy outlined in October 2019, means deported migrants’ lives will not be at risk in the two North African countries.”

  30. Turkish police ‘arrest 23 FETO-linked terror suspects’
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/turkish-police-arrest-23-feto-linked-terror-suspects/2014149

“Turkish security forces arrested at least 23 people for their suspected links to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group behind the 2016 defeated coup, security sources said on Wednesday.

Prosecutors in the eastern Van province issued arrest warrants for seven suspects over their alleged links to the organization.

Anti-terror police teams apprehended six of the suspects in simultaneous operations in two provinces, with efforts on to track down the remaining one.

Separately, prosecutors in the central Aksaray province issued warrants for 17 suspects, including former security directors. They were held in concurrent operations across nine cities.

FETO and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, in which 251 people were martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Turkey also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.”

  31. Switzerland: Foreigners make up 58% of all adults convicted in 2019
    https://rmx.news/article/article/switzerland-foreigners-make-up-58-of-all-adults-convicted-in-2019

“According to a study published by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (OFS), adult foreigners represent 57.8 percent of all adults convicted in 2019.

Of all adults sentenced in 2019 for violating the law on narcotics, foreigners were responsible for 57.9 percent of cases. In the case of traffic law, it was 52 percent.

When it comes to the country of origin, most perpetrators were from South-West Africa. According to the statistics, the rate is 30 per thousand, meaning that out of 1,000 people from Southwest Africa, 30 have committed an offense. People from West African countries come second with a rate of 21.7 per thousand.

In the following places are Jamaicans (20.5), Haitians (19), immigrants from the Dominican Republic and Yemen (17.7), and South Africans (17.6). The North African nations are in 8th place, whereas they were in 3rd place in the last survey.

The number of immigrants from the former Yugoslavia convicted of a crime has decreased to 7.6 people per thousand, which is 0.3 per thousand less than the previous year.

British and Canadian (1.2), American (1.4), Swedish, and Dutch (1.6) nationals are among the least represented in criminal conviction statistics. People of Indian nationality have the lowest conviction rate at 0.9 people per thousand, while in the case of the Swiss, it is 2.6 people per thousand.

Foreigners make up a large percentage of the population of Switzerland, accounting for 25.1 percent of all residents, however, most of these foreigners come from European Union countries such as Germany, France, and Italy. That means that only the small percentage of foreigners from regions in the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean account a highly disproportionate share of criminal convicts in the country.

The data from the OFS also shows that young foreigners commit fewer offenses than foreign adults. Specifically, they are responsible for 40 percent of the crimes in their age group.

In the case of the federal law on road traffic, 29.3 percent of the offenses were committed by young foreigners. Another 25.2 percent of them broke the law on narcotics.”

  32. Belgium: Three young immigrants arrested for driving vehicle into right-wing demonstration
    https://rmx.news/article/article/belgium-three-young-immigrants-arrested-for-driving-vehicle-into-right-wing-demonstration

“Last Friday, three young men were arrested after they drove their vehicle into a demonstration of Flemish nationalists in the Belgian town of Puurs at high speed. The public prosecutor’s office confirmed this to Belgium’s SCEPTR news outlet, refusing to disclose more information about the suspects, however, according to the Belgian RTV television station, the suspects are men of foreign origin.

The Flemish nationalists organized the demonstration in response to the senseless violence of a group of immigrant youths, which happened in the town earlier that week. The rally went quietly until suddenly a car with its headlights turned off tried to drive into the crowd at high speed. By miracle, there were no injuries.

The driver sped away, but officers searching for the perpetrators stopped the vehicle near the scene, and the three suspects were arrested. They turned out to be three 19-year-old young men, the public prosecutor confirms to SCEPTR.

Later on Twitter, SCEPTR informed that the man, who drove into the rally, has been released. According to the public prosecutor, there was not enough evidence that they drove into the crowd deliberately.”

  33. ‘Islamism is at war with us. We have to evict it from our country by force,’ says Marine Le Pen following beheading terror attack
    https://rmx.news/article/article/islamism-is-at-war-with-us-we-have-to-evict-it-from-our-country-by-force-says-marine-le-pen-following-beheading-terror-attack

“Friday’s brutal murder of high school teacher Samuel Paty in France has once again sparked a debate on extremism and sent the country into crisis, with National Rally leader Marine Le Pen slamming French President Emmanuel Macron’s failure to control terrorism in the country.

“Islamism is at war with us. We have to evict it from our country by force,” said Marine Le Pen in response to Paty’s death.

President Emmanuel Macron has long been under pressure to take a tougher stance on Islamic extremism and separatism. Among other things, speculation about the expulsion of more than two hundred radicals in response to the attack started to circulate in the media. France is also expected to tighten up the screening of asylum applications and increase control over the funding of Islamic organizations.

However, Macron has made sweeping promises to combat Islamic extremism in the past that never came to fruition. In fact, a similar Islamic extremist beheading occurred in France just in 2015, and little progress has been made since then.

History teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded because he showed his students a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad in a class discussion focused on freedom of speech. He was assassinated by an 18-year-old Islamic Chechen radical who was born in Moscow and had refugee status in France.

Macron is aware that the sensitive issue is closely connected to his other political ambitions. He is expected to wage battle for the Élysée Palace in 2022 with Marine Le Pen, and polling shows it will be a tighter race than 2017. Her campaign will undoubtedly be based on promises of stricter action against radicals and together immigration controls. She has called for all unaccompanied minors to be deported back to their country of origin, which she says will help control the issue of crime and terrorism, and reduce the massive cost burden they incur on France.

Following the beheading attack, French police have launched an investigation of dozens of Islamists, mainly because of their posts on the Internet. According to the AFP agency, Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin announced this action, explaining that a father of one of the students and a Muslim activist issued a fatwa against the history teacher. Fifteen people are in custody in connection with the investigation, according to AFP.

“One of our compatriots was murdered because he taught about freedom of speech, the freedom to believe or not to believe,” Macron said after the attack.

At the same time, the French president has been labeled a failure to tackle the issue of extremism. French journalist Patrick Edery in Poland even released documents showed that the Chechen responsible for the beheading attack had his asylum request to Poland rejected ten years ago along with the rest of his family. Edery highlighted that Poland has suffered zero Islamic terrorist attacks in sharp contrast to the deteriorating situation in France.

The attack on Samuel Paty, whose memory was honored by tens of thousands of people on Sunday, has taken on incredible symbolic meaning.

“Paty is a martyr for sacred French values. He is seen as a victim of war for France’s future,” Tom Rogan, a Middle East expert, wrote in a commentary for Washington Examiner.

On Sunday, Reuters reported that 231 foreigners suspected of religious extremism will be deported in response to Paty’s murder. However, the Ministry of the Interior did not confirm the information.

In September, a man of Pakistani descent also committed a terrorist attack outside the old offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, stabbing two people over the magazine’s decision to republish its Muhammad cartoons. He is a so-called unaccompanied minor who confessed to lying about his age to get protection status upon entering France, revealing to authorities that he was actually 25 instead of 18.

Those people and organizations associated with radicalism are reportedly under more intense observation at the moment, with authorities mulling dissolving certain organizations.

The government also is preparing a law focusing on Muslim radicals, which, according to authorities, create a parallel society defying French values. Therefore, the interior ministry plans, for example, to educate imams in France instead of having them come from abroad.

Other plans of the interior ministry include the reduction of foreign influence, mainly the financial one, on the French Muslim population of about six million people. Furthermore, it intends to tighten the rules for home education, which should only be allowed for health reasons.

The draft legislation should be ready in December. Macron is trying to avoid giving the impression that he blames the entire Muslim community for the recent attacks. That is why he wants French Muslims to take part in the planned measures. Earlier this month, he also spoke about the necessity to invest in the suburbs of large cities where most immigrants live. He also said that the country had failed for decades as it allowed the emergence of ghettos where “the most radical forms of Islam have become a source of hope.””

  34. Trump Bans Convicted Felons, Gang Members from Securing Asylum in U.S.
    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/10/21/trump-bans-convicted-felons-gang-members-securing-asylum/

“President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have issued a final regulatory rule that bans convicted felons, gang members, and domestic abusers from securing asylum to remain in the United States.

The rule, DOJ and DHS officials announced this week, ensures that foreign nationals convicted of certain crimes are not allowed to obtain asylum in the U.S. The rule takes effect in about a month.

“To ensure that criminal aliens cannot obtain this discretionary benefit, the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security have exercised their regulatory authority to limit eligibility for asylum for aliens who have engaged in specified categories of criminal behavior,” federal officials wrote in a news release.

The rule bans asylum for foreign nationals convicted of:

A felony under federal or state law
    Alien smuggling or harboring
    Illegal reentry
    Criminal street gang activity
    Drunk driving
    Domestic abuse
Identity theft or using fraudulent identification
Possession or trafficking of drugs or drug paraphernalia
The tightening of asylum rules to close loopholes comes as Trump has implemented the highly effective “Remain in Mexico” policy that has drastically reduced fraud. Most recently, Trump imposed a Center for Disease Control (CDC) order that has allowed federal immigration officials to immediately return migrants arriving at the United States-Mexico to their native countries.

As of late June, about 95 percent of migrants were being instantly returned to their native countries following their arrival at the southern border thanks to the CDC order.

The reforms could all be undone with the election of Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden. The former vice president has suggested reinstating the Catch and Release program for border crossers and his unity platform with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) would free border crossers into the interior of the U.S. while they await asylum hearings.”
