Reader’s Links for October 3rd, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. Saudi Arabia urges world action against Iran
    https://saudigazette.com.sa/article/598733/SAUDI-ARABIA/Saudi-Arabia-urges-world-action-against-Iran

“Saudi Arabia has urged the world community to “face its responsibilities” and counter Iran’s violations of international accords, mainly a 2015 deal on its nuclear program.

The call was made by Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan at a virtual UN ceremony marking the International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

“The Iranian stock of enriched uranium is currently 10 times higher than the limit stipulated in the nuclear agreement,” he said, referring to the 2015 deal between Iran and major world powers.

“The Kingdom sees it as necessary for the world community to be united against any country seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, especially the countries with aggressive behavior that seek to destabilize international security by funding outlawed terrorist militias and providing them with arms,” he added. — SG”

“Hundreds of Sudanese soldiers entered Saudi Arabia en route to Yemen last week, Middle East Eye has learned, suggesting Khartoum is increasing its involvement in the Yemeni conflict.

In January, Sudan announced it was drawing down its military presence in Yemen from around 5,000 troops to a “minor” group of some 650. Previously, Sudan has had as many as 15,000 soldiers deployed there as part of the Saudi and UAE-led coalition fighting the Houthi movement.

However, private Saudi sources told MEE that 1,018 Sudanese army officers and soldiers entered the kingdom by boat on 22 September, passing through passport control in the southeastern city of Jazan, near the Yemeni border…”

  5. HRW launches campaign to counter Saudi ‘image laundering’ amid continued rights violations
    https://english.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/10/3/hrw-launches-campaign-to-counter-saudi-image-laundering

“Human Rights Watchdog has slammed Saudi Arabia’s efforts at “image laundering” efforts, involving billions of dollars being spent towards deflecting attention from the kingdom’s human rights record.

The rights watchdog said on Friday it had launched a new campaign to counter the kingdom’s alleged whitewashing of abuses. The launch coincided with the second anniversary of the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi operatives.

“Human Rights Watch will seek to counter Saudi efforts to whitewash abuses through an outreach campaign to inform the entertainment and sports industries about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, including top celebrities, performers, and sports figures,” HRW said in a statement.

“The campaign will also seek out organisers and participants in major international events sponsored by the Saudi government, calling on them to speak out publicly on rights issues or, when laundering is the primary purpose, not to participate.”

Following Khashoggi’s murder in 2018, the world cast its eyes on the increasing authoritarianism taking hold under Saudi Arabia’s de-facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, despite international pressure, top-level officials have not been held to account over the killing and reports of human rights abuses continue.

In the same period, Riyadh has invested heavily in rebranding the kingdom as a hub of entertainment, tourism and international business.

This has seen Saudi Arabia host a number of high-profile sporting events, including WWE wrestling, the 2020 Dakar Rally, the Saudi Invitational Golf Tournament, and the upcoming 2023 Formula 1 race.

Since 2018, it has also hosted concerts by a number of Western artists, including Enrique Iglesias, Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Janet Jackson, 50 Cent, Jennifer Lopez, and David Guetta.
“Saudi citizens and residents should enjoy top-notch entertainment and sporting events, but they also should enjoy basic rights such as free expression and peaceful assembly,” said Michael Page, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

“So, when Hollywood A-listers, international athletes, and other global celebrities take government money to perform in Saudi Arabia while staying silent on the government’s atrocious rights record, they are boosting the kingdom’s strategy of whitewashing Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s abuses.”

Under Crown Prince Mohammed, Saudi Arabia has touted entertainment as a key feature of its ambitious ‘Vision 2030’ economic overhaul project, while also introducing liberal reforms to open the kingdom to the world.

This includes allowing women to drive, reforming guardianship laws and issuing tourist visas forthe first time.

At the same time, however, Riyadh has continued to pursue its destructive war in Yemen and human rights defenders continue to languish in Saudi prisons, including Loujain al-Hathoul – a prominent rights activist who had campaigned for the right for women to drive.

Prince Mohammed has also led a sweeping ‘anti-corruption’ drive which has netted rival Saudi princes, political foes and high-profile dissenters.

Allegations of human rights abuses continue to dog to the Saudi Arabia, leading many celebrities to decline invitations to the kingdom.

Nicki Minaj, Emily Ratajkowski, Martha Hunt, John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy are among a growing list of celebrities who have declined Saudi invitiations over human rights concerns.”

  6. Egypt’s Al-Azhar condemns Macron’s remarks on ‘Islamic separatism and isolationism’

“The Islamic Research Academy at Al-Azhar, Egypt’s top religious authority, has condemned French President Emmanuel Macron’s announced plan for fighting “Islamic separatism,” which Al-Azhar described as an “explicit call for racism and hate.”

In a speech in Les Mureaux, near Paris, Macron announced intentions to propose a bill to France’s parliament next year to address what he called Islamist isolationism and separatism.

The bill would impose tighter controls on funding for mosques and severely restrict home-schooling to prevent children from being “indoctrinated” by unregistered schools that deviate from the national curriculum, Macron said.

“There is a crisis of Islam everywhere, which is being corrupted by radical forms,” Macron said.

In a statement on Saturday, Al-Azhar’s Islamic Research Academy, which works to reform Islamic culture and safeguard it from political and ideological intolerance, said that President Macron has directed “false accusations that have nothing to do with the true context of religion.”

It said that Islam calls for “tolerance and peace” among people, including those who do not believe in it.

The academy said it completely rejects Macron’s remarks, which it said “destroy all joint efforts by religious figures to eliminate racism and bullying against religions.”

The academy also said that some people insist on making false accusations against Islam, including those of separatism and isolationism, and are confused by the fact that some people exploit some religious texts to fulfil malicious goals.

The religious body called for abandoning attacks against religions, as this obstructs constructive dialogue and backs hate speech. It also said that such “attacks” can hinder attempts to establish co-existence among people in a society.”

“The US has transferred aid worth $400 million, mostly consisting of security equipment, to the YPG/PKK terrorist organization in Syria, local sources said on Saturday.

The support package, which started reaching the YPG/PKK terror group last month, will be used for military purposes, according to the sources, who requested anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

They added that the equipment given to the terror group includes bomb detectors, fingerprint scanners, and tracking devices.

On Sept. 25, top US diplomat Mike Pompeo announced that Washington will provide an extra $720 million in aid to Syria.

In a statement, the US State Department claimed that “none of this funding will be provided to security forces,” saying that it was all “humanitarian assistance” that will be distributed to Syrians by “trusted partners on the ground.”

The US has long provided military training, equipment, and weapons support to the YPG/PKK terror group…”
