Reader’s Links for September 14, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. NYT – Progressive Donor Susan Sandler to Give $200 Million to Racial Justice Groups

Her efforts will support organizations trying to build political power in states that are undergoing rapid demographic change.

Susan Sandler, a liberal philanthropist, has announced a $200 million investment in racial justice organizations, targeting areas across the South and the Southwest that are experiencing rapid demographic transformation.

Ms. Sandler, who learned she had a rare form of brain cancer four years ago, unveiled the effort in a lengthy post on Medium published on Monday morning. In the post, which was shared with The New York Times before publication, Ms. Sandler said her investments would be made through a new organization, the Susan Sandler Fund, aimed at combating systemic racism and building civic power. Ms. Sandler characterized the effort as a shift in her political priorities and giving philosophy.

“I have come to believe that, rather than trying to use persuasive papers and reports to attempt to change the minds of those who are making decisions, the more effective way to transform societal priorities and public policies is to change the climate and environment in which decisions are made,” Ms. Sandler writes. “When our government, corporate, and other societal institutions are responsive to — and, frankly, fearful of — the people who most bear the brunt of inequality and injustice, then better priorities, practices, and policies follow.”

Ms. Sandler’s announcement comes amid skyrocketing investment in racial justice organizations, fueled by the national reckoning on systemic inequities and injustice that swept the country this summer.

Small-dollar donations to bail funds after the killing of George Floyd, a Black man who died in Minneapolis after a police officer knelt on his neck, reached over $90 million. In July, the foundation started by George Soros pledged $220 million to groups focused on racial equity, an eye-popping total that gave long-term sustainability to several organizations. Ms. Sandler’s fund will provide several groups with a similar assurance.

Taken together, the donations have reshaped the landscape of Black political and civil rights organizations, and made clear that race and identity will remain at the center of American politics. It also signals a commitment by liberal donors to invest in long-term efforts to change the political landscape, not simply one-off efforts to win an election or invest in a particular candidate.

“In ways big and small, each of us can establish a legacy,” Ms. Sandler writes. “I’m grateful that I’ve been given the time since my cancer diagnosis to establish mine. I urge each of you not to wait to work on establishing yours.”

Initial recipients of grants from Ms. Sandler’s fund include several progressive organizations working in battleground states to register new voters from underrepresented groups. The organizations include the Texas Organizing Project, New Virginia Majority, New Florida Majority and the Arizona Center for Empowerment.

Vivian Chang, a veteran of the California nonprofit world who will serve as the fund’s executive director, said in a phone interview that “the investments are not so much targeted to battleground states, but looking at the landscape of racism and demographic change.”

“This fund really underscores what’s left out of many philanthropic discussions,” Ms. Chang said. “This concept of being accountable to real people with real problems, that is what catalyzes change, it’s what generates urgency and creativity. And so that’s why we’re focused on increasing the power and influence of those who bear the brunt of racism.”

The Sandler Foundation, which was started in 1991 by Ms. Sandler’s parents, the billionaires Herb and Marion Sandler, has long been a hub of left-leaning philanthropic efforts. The foundation has helped create organizations like the Center for American Progress and the Learning Policy Institute, and has supported nonprofit journalism outfits including ProPublica.

Ms. Sandler, a trustee at the foundation, has supported several Democratic candidates and campaigns and has been a power broker in national and California politics for years along with her husband, Steve Phillips. She was a key supporter of former President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential run, and she backed Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California.

With her new effort, Ms. Sandler will shift from the insider world of campaign donations to long-term efforts at building power. In traditionally Republican states such as Arizona, Georgia and Texas, the prospect of a changing electorate has enthralled political observers for years, and it is one reason such states are often mentioned as future battlegrounds in national elections.

Leaders of the groups receiving the new grant money said unlocking that potential would require organizing — and investment. They praised Ms. Sandler’s decision as a legacy-defining one, a move that sees where the country is going rather than where it is now.

The list of grantees also includes the Asian American and Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Fund, Advance Native Political Leadership, the California Digital Divide Fund and PICO California, a progressive, faith-based organizing group.

“A lot of campaign dollars, a lot of party dollars, a lot of political-donor dollars are typically in service to short-term, tactical-issue campaigns,” said Joseph Tomás McKellar, co-director of PICO California. “This is about building a strong constituency that can withstand the kind of storms of the moment and help us build long-term resiliency and commitment amongst a large base of people for systemic change.”

Tram Nguyen, co-director of New Virginia Majority, said more funders like Ms. Sandler were moving toward providing groups this type of operational support, without the restrictions that often come with large grants. Ms. Nguyen said such flexibility would help progressive and minority-led organizations, and outlast any one politician or campaign.

“It’s not about electing the individual person, and those people aren’t our heroes,” Ms. Nguyen said. “We are our own heroes.”

    • Susan Sandler

Susan Sandler is a San Francisco-based left-wing political activist and philanthropist known for her support of Democratic candidates and left-wing causes and organizations. Sandler and her husband Steven Phillips, who is also a left-of-center advocacy donor, founded the Sandler Phillips Center to advocate for left-wing causes. Sandler sits on the boards of several of the nation’s most prominent left-of-center non-profits and advocacy organizations, such as the liberal donor collective Democracy Alliance. She describes herself as the largest and earliest funder of Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign for President, as well as an early investor in the political careers of Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ).

Sandler is the daughter of the late Herb and Marion Sandler, who were left-wing philanthropists and founders of the Sandler Foundation, where Susan Sandler is a board trustee. The elder Sandlers were the billionaire owners of Golden West, a savings and loans bank. The Sandler family is often noted for instituting and pioneering the aggressive lending practices that led to the housing crisis of the late 2000s. Golden West was sold by the Sandlers to Wachovia for $24 billion in 2006, prior to the 2008 financial crisis. [2] The Sandlers made $2 billion from the sale of Golden West, giving away over $1.5 billion to form the Sandler foundation.

Susan Sandler attended Stanford University and married fellow left-wing activist student Steven Phillips, a civil rights lawyer and Democratic Party activist who is a self-described student of “Marx, Mao, and Lenin” and wrote that his “political baptism was the Jesse Jackson 1984 Presidential campaign.”

Phillips has a long history in left-wing organizing and politics; he was an elected member of the San Francisco Board of Education and served as board president. Phillips is also the founder of left-wing advocacy organization Democracy in Color.

      Political and Advocacy Activities
Susan Sandler followed in her parents’ tradition of financially supporting left-wing causes and Democratic Party candidates. In 2019, Sandler made $1 million in contributions to Dream United, a Super PAC promoting the Presidential candidacy of U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). [6] Sandler notes that she was among the first donors to the campaigns of President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Booker.

Sandler is a prolific donor to Democratic candidates, giving maximum donations to dozens of candidates across the country each political cycle.

      DEMOCRACY ALLIANCE
Sandler was a founding member of the Democracy Alliance (DA), the major liberal donor convening that included Mark and Susie Buell, Peter B. Lewis, and George Soros. Sandler and her husband Steve Phillips are highly involved with Democracy Alliance, with Sandler serving on the board of the organization.

“A special criminal court awarded on Monday the death penalty to two Saudi brothers associated with Daesh (the so-called IS) terrorist outfit. They were convicted of killing their mother and attempting to murder their father and brother.

In a grisly crime that took place in June 2016, the brothers lured their mother to one of the rooms in their house where the second defendant grabbed her firmly from the back and put his left hand on her mouth so that he would not hear her screams, and the first defendant stabbed her several times in many parts of her body until she fell on the ground. The second defendant then slaughtered her. The court found that the brothers planned the murder in advance and arranged weapons for their crime on the pretext of blasphemy that according to them justifies the killing.

They were found guilty of adopting the takfiri ideology that promoted them to kill their mother for not embracing the ideology. They also attempted to kill their father and brother on the same pretext. They attacked the father and hit him with a machete on his head and hands with the intention of killing him.

They also attacked their brother and hit him several times on his head and hands with machetes with the intention of killing him under the pretext of his disbelief and permitting his blood, but he managed to escape. They managed to escape after committing the crimes.”

“A smuggling boat sank off the southern Greek island of Crete on Monday, leaving three dead, while a large rescue operation managed to save 53 others from the sea, authorities said.
The Greek coast guard said efforts continued deep into the evening to locate other people who might be in the water. It said it was unclear whether anybody was still missing, as the survivors were not in a position to give accurate numbers of how many had been on board when the vessel went down.

The dead included two children and a woman.

Initially, a person claiming to be a passenger who notified authorities by phone said 16 people were on the vessel that sank 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Crete amid high winds Monday, the coast guard said.

A Greek naval frigate and an air force helicopter took part in the search, together with two coast guard boats and three merchant ships.

There was no indication where the vessel sailed from, how big it was or where it had been heading to.

The Armenian foreign minister also expressed interest in bolstering cooperation, especially in tourism, trade and the economic level.

Rady said the meeting saw an exchange of viewpoints on developments in Libya, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine, where they agreed on the necessity of counteracting foreign interferences in the region.

The meeting also tackled bilateral cooperation and increasing mutual investments and maximising trade volume, especially in the fields of pharmaceutical manufacturing, technical education, tourism, and the coordination and exchange of information between relevant authorities.”

“Turkish security forces detained an ISIL terrorist wanted with a red notice, a security source said on Sept. 13.

The terrorist was nabbed in the southern Hatay province.

The detention came when nine Russian nationals, including seven children, attempted to illegally enter Turkey from Syria, said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

After an initial investigation, it turned out that there was an international search warrant for one of the people in question, and her daughter was sought with a red notice due to her link with the terrorist group.

Meanwhile, police also detained five people allegedly linked to the ISIL terror group, security sources said on Sept. 13.

The police carried out simultaneous raids at predetermined addresses in northwestern Bursa and southern Mersin provinces, said the sources who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The sources said many photos and videos used by the terrorist group while disseminating propaganda were found on phones of the suspects.

Turkey was one of the first countries to declare ISIL as a terror group in 2013.

The country has since been attacked by ISIL terrorists multiple times. The terror group has carried out at least 10 suicide bombings, seven bomb attacks, and four armed attacks, killing 315 people and injuring hundreds more.

In response, Turkey launched anti-terror operations at home and abroad to prevent further attacks.”

“The UN human rights chief said Monday she has reports of pushbacks and collective expulsions of migrants at the European Union’s sea and land borders, describing it as a violation of their legal obligations.

Michelle Bachelet spoke at the opening of the 45th session of the Human Rights Council.

“Last week’s fire at the migrant camp in Lesbos, Greece, has had a drastic impact on the lives of thousands of people – and underscores the need for solidarity and shared responsibility among the EU Member States,” said Bachelet.

She encouraged the European Commission and EU states to enhance genuine solidarity and strengthen human rights safeguards at EU external borders in the upcoming EU Pact on Migration and Asylum,” she said.

“Reports of pushbacks and collective expulsions at the sea and land borders of EU States – in violation of legal obligations and with grave consequences for the lives and rights of migrants – call for independent monitoring and verification.””

    https://www.dw.com/en/german-investigators-say-stabbing-may-be-linked-to-afd-political-ad/a-54927742

“A suspected Islamist knife attack may be linked to local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, investigators said. The victim’s father, a Turk, appeared on a campaign ad for the anti-immigration AfD party.

German authorities are looking into a possible political motive for a stabbing which took place ahead of local elections in the western town of Stolberg, officials said on Monday.

A 21-year-old German-Iraqi has been arrested in connection to the incident. Officials believe he stabbed a German national with a Turkish background early on Sunday, hours before polls were set to open.

The attacker allegedly opened a car door while the victim was inside the vehicle and stabbed him in the arm. He reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) during the incident.

The 23-year-old survived but sustained “serious injuries” which required emergency surgery.

According to the authorities, the victim’s father is Turkish and had previously appeared in a political ad for the far-right AfD party. The father was shown with a group of people including the local AfD leader, Hans Wolf, and a caption reading “German Turks also want change.”

Wolf told the German DPA news agency that the photo was taken accidentally during a visit to a local municipality. Wolf also said people shown on the photo agreed for the image to be published online. Separately, investigators said the father of the victim told them he did not consent for the photo to be used for campaign purposes, and had no knowledge of it.

Police said they had visited Wolf for a “preventive consultation” on his own security on Sunday.

Anti-terrorism investigators have taken over the stabbing probe, according to DPA. According to German prosecutors, the suspected attacker had already attacked someone in a similar manner in March this year.”

  14. German writers call for release of Saudi blogger Raif Badawi
    https://www.dw.com/en/german-writers-call-for-release-of-saudi-blogger-raif-badawi/a-54925385

“Saudi dissident Raif Badawi has been imprisoned and lashed for allegedly “insulting Islam” in an online forum he created to discuss liberal values. The writers urged Berlin “to save the life of our colleague.”

More than 50 German-speaking writers on Sunday called for the release of imprisoned Saudi blogger Raif Badawi in a letter to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

The letter described Badawi’s”extremely worrying health condition” and urged German authorities to intervene. Berlin should seek his immediate release “in order to save the life of our colleague,” the writers said.

The plea was sent out by the German chapter of PEN, an international organization dedicated to opposing “any form of suppression of freedom of expression.” Its signatories included German novelist Herta Müller and Jewish author Barbara Honigmann, among others.

Badawi’s wife, Ensaf Haidar, praised the initiative, saying she was thankful for the effort. Haidar has received several awards on behalf of Badawi, including DW’s inaugural Freedom of Speech Award.

“I am grateful to these prominent German writers … for their letter,” said Badawi’s wife, activist Ensaf Haidar. “It is time to Free Raif Badawi and unite him with us in Canada.”

    ‘Vicious and cruel’

Badawi, a prominent blogger in Saudi liberal circles, was arrested in 2012 for allegedly “insulting Islam” on an online forum he created to foster debate about his home country.

Two years later, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1,000 lashes and fined 1 million Saudi riyals (€224,000, $266,000).

After Badawi received his first 50 lashes, Saudi authorities postponed the rest of the brutal punishment indefinitely, likely as a result of the global outcry against his detention and inhumane treatment.

Several human rights groups have also called for his release, with Human Rights Watch saying “publicly lashing a peaceful activist merely for expressing his ideas sends an ugly message of intolerance.”

“Saudi Arabia is showing a willingness to inflict vicious and cruel punishments on writers whose views it rejects,” said Sarah Leah Whitson in a brief published in 2015.”

  15. Another migrant crisis will hit Europe as water and food shortages displace 1.2 billion people: report
    https://rmx.news/article/article/another-migrant-crisis-will-hit-europe-as-water-and-food-shortages-displace-1-2-billion-people-report

“Europe must prepare for a massive increase in asylum applications, as many environmental threats will displace more than 1.2 billion people over the next 30 years, according to a new study from Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

The study reports that water and food shortages will cause mass migration from at least 31 countries that are failing to cope with the environmental crisis, with a significant amount of displaced people seeking to settle in Europe.

“The resulting displacement will be on a much larger scale than the migration crisis at the turn of 2015 and 2016 if nothing is done to tackle environmental degradation,” the institute’s founder Steve Killelea told The Independent.

Parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa face a perfect storm of environmental problems and instability, accoding to the IEP, which has analyzed several factors such as population growth, food shortages, drought, floods, rising temperatures sea levels, and nations’ resilience to resist a climate crisis.

Nineteen countries with the highest number of environmental threats are also among the 40 least peaceful countries in the world, such as Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Chad, India, and Pakistan, according to Czech news portal Idnes.cz.

“Some of these countries are already trapped in a vicious circle, where competition for limited resources leads to conflict and further depletion of resources,” the study said. According to experts, the lack of drinking water and food will be a key driver that will cause further instability.

“Unless there is urgent global cooperation, access to food and water will worsen over the next 30 years,” said Killelea, noting that if there is no change, unrest and conflict will increase.

    Pakistan is the worst off
According to the IEP, the country with the largest population at risk of displacement is Pakistan, which is facing floods and a shortage of drinking water and food supplies. It is followed by Ethiopia and Iran. Haiti faces the biggest threat in Central America.

The study warned that even relatively small environmental threats and natural disasters could lead to mass displacement of the population and thus affect regional and global security.

Richer and more developed countries in Europe and North America face fewer environmental threats and will be better equipped to adapt to climate change, but will not be immune to its effects.

    Europe must be careful
“Europe must pay attention to this. We saw what happened when two million migrants arrived in Europe in 2015 and 2016. We have seen the associated political instability and the rise of new political parties,” stressed Killelea.

“If we do not do something to solve these environmental problems, migration will take place on a much larger scale than we have seen in recent years,” he concluded.

Last year’s extreme weather led to the displacement of 24 million people, with more than nine million having to flee their homes due to conflict and other disasters.

According to the UN, more than one percent of humanity currently faces displacement. According to the organization, about four out of five displaced seek refuge in neighboring countries.

Germany’s Green Party has previously launched a proposal that could see Germany accept up to 150 million climate refugees from the Third World, arguing that the already heavily-populated country has enough space to take them in.”

    https://rmx.news/article/article/nigerian-migrant-goes-on-sexual-assault-spree-in-germany-attacks-7-and-14-year-old-girls

“A 36-year-old Nigerian migrant went on a sexual assault spree in Germany, which included targeting a 7-year-old girl, a social worker and a teenager all in the course of 24 hours, according to Munich police.

The man allegedly beat a 7-year-old girl on her buttocks and sexually molested her in his accommodation on Sept. 7, at around 2 p.m. On that same day, he is also accused of sexually assaulting a social worker at the same accommodation by grabbing her crotch in two separate cases.

The next day, on Tuesday, Sept. 8, around 7.15 a.m., police say the Nigerian man suddenly grabbed a 14-year-old student under her clothes and began stroking her at a traffic light in the Munich neighborhood of Berg-am-Laim, at the corner of Schluesselbergstraße.

Police, who had been searching for the suspect, arrested him around 2 p.m. at the accommodation where he lived in the Munich neighborhood of Berg-am-Laim.

The suspect was severely drunk when he was arrested. After a medical examination by a specialist, the Munich I public prosecutor submitted the case to an investigating judge.

The 36-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment. He has been charged with sexual abuse of children and multiple counts of sexual assault and harassment. Police are also investigating further allegations related to the suspect.”
