Reader’s Links for August 29, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • All I knew (until recently) was that he was a good businessman, now I don’t trust him as far as I can spit.

  1. Here is one of the most honest, brilliant voices in finance. He has always presented as apolitical and purely scientific. I believe he is Jewish Orthodox. I only mention this fact so that it may grab the attention of a few more people here. Note at the end of the interview he says he wears an N95 because he is older and has a few health issues “…here and there…”.

The N95 is not a useless cloth mask. It’s an N95. If you’re male and you’re afraid make sure you shave first to gain the best possible seal while wearing it. If you’re female and need to shave first I can only say sorry about that. Things are tough all over. As an aside, just imagine how and why the N95 is not available in the Netherlands. Besides being one of the most successful money analysts in the world he is also a medical doctor!

  2. Banksy funds refugee rescue boat operating in Mediterranean
Exclusive: UK artist finances bright pink motor yacht that set sail in secrecy to avoid being intercepted by authorities
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/27/banksy-funds-refugee-rescue-boat-operating-in-mediterranean
The British street artist Banksy has financed a boat to rescue refugees attempting to reach Europe from north Africa, the Guardian can reveal.

The vessel, named Louise Michel after a French feminist anarchist, set off in secrecy on 18 August from the Spanish seaport of Burriana, near Valencia, and is now in the central Mediterranean where on Thursday it rescued 89 people in distress, including 14 women and four children.

It is now looking for a safe seaport to disembark the passengers or to transfer them to a European coastguard vessel.
The crew, made up of European activists with long experience in search and rescue operations, had already assisted in two other rescue operations involving a total of 105 people, who are now onboard the NGO vessel Sea-Watch 4.

Painted in bright pink and featuring Banksy artwork depicting a girl in a life vest holding a heart-shaped safety buoy, the Louise Michel sails under a German flag. The 31-metre motor yacht, formerly owned by French customs authorities, is smaller but considerably faster than other NGO rescue vessels.

Banksy’s involvement in the rescue mission goes back to September 2019 when he sent an email to Pia Klemp, the former captain of several NGO boats that have rescued thousands of people over recent years.
“Hello Pia, I’ve read about your story in the papers. You sound like a badass,” he wrote. “I am an artist from the UK and I’ve made some work about the migrant crisis, obviously I can’t keep the money. Could you use it to buy a new boat or something? Please let me know. Well done. Banksy.”

Klemp, who initially thought it was a joke, believes she was chosen by Banksy due to her political stance. “I don’t see sea rescue as a humanitarian action, but as part of an anti-fascist fight,” she told the Guardian.

She has made clear that Banksy’s involvement in the operations is limited to providing financial support. “Banksy won’t pretend that he knows better than us how to run a ship, and we won’t pretend to be artists.”

With a top speed of 27 knots, the Louise Michel would be able to “hopefully outrun the so-called Libyan coastguard before they get to boats with refugees and migrants and pull them back to the detention camps in Libya”, said Klemp.
Non-state sea rescuers have long criticised the mass return of migrants to Libya by the Libyan coastguard in collaboration with EU member states. International organisations have accused the Libyan coastguard of mistreating people at sea or selling them off to militias at Libyan harbours after intercepting them.
According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 7,600 migrants have been intercepted so far this year and returned to Libya, a war-torn country where different political factions continue to struggle for power. Often confined to informal camps, the situation for migrants in Libya is desperate, with acts of systematic torture and rape long documented by human rights organisations.

The 10 crew members of the Louise Michel have diverse backgrounds, but they all identify as anti-racist and anti-fascist activists advocating for radical political change. As it is a feminist project, only female crew members are allowed to speak in the name of the Louise Michel.

Lea Reisner, a nurse and head of mission for the first rescue operation, said the project was anarchist at its heart, meant to bring together a variety of struggles for social justice, including for women’s and LGBTIQ rights, racial equality, migrants’ rights, environmentalism and animal rights.

The planning of the mission was carried out in secrecy between London, Berlin and Burriana, where the Louise Michel had docked to be equipped for sea rescues. The crew feared that media attention could compromise their goals: if word had circulated that a project financed by Banksy would soon sail toward the central Mediterranean to rescue migrants, the European authorities could have attempted to thwart the mission. For this reason, Banksy’s team and the rescue activists agreed to release the news about the boat only after carrying out the first rescue.

The Louise Michel is the latest intervention by members of civil society seeking to prevent deaths in the Mediterranean. Other NGO rescuers have engaged in rescue activities this year but have been impeded by what they consider to be excessive and politically motivated inspections carried out by Italian authorities. Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions have also affected sea rescue activities, with NGO crews unable to return to the central Mediterranean for the last several weeks.
So far in 2020, more than 500 refugees and migrants are known to have died in the Mediterranean sea, and the real number is estimated to be considerably higher. On Wednesday, 45 people – including five children – died when the engine on their boat exploded off Libya, in the country’s deadliest shipwreck this year, the UN said. More than 19,500 migrants have survived the Mediterranean crossing along the central maritime route this year and reached Italy or Malta.

Claire Faggianelli, an activist who prepared the Louise Michel for its first mission, saw the project as a wake-up call for Europe. “We really want to try to awaken the consciousness of Europe and say: ‘Look, we have been yelling at you for years now. There is something that shouldn’t be happening at the very borders of Europe, and you close your eyes to it. Wake up!’” she said.

  3. Seven Terrorists, One Soldier Killed in India’s Jammu and Kashmir in Security Operation (sputniknews, Aug 29, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/india/202008291080311010-seven-terrorists-one-soldier-killed-in-indias-jammu-and-kashmir-in-security-operation/

“The issue of terrorism in India’s Kashmir Valley dates back to the 1990s, when demands for independence from the country began to be made in the region. The Indian government accuses neighbouring Pakistan, which also lays claim to the region, of fuelling Kashmiri secessionism

Seven terrorists, including three from the banned Pakistan-based outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad, have been killed in India’s Jammu and Kashmir union territory since Friday as part of a security operation against terrorism in the valley, officials said on Saturday.

A critically injured soldier of the Indian Army later succumbed to his injuries. He was wounded during the encounter between terrorists and security personnel, officials said.

According to a senior Jammu and Kashmir police official, the encounter started at around 1 am and lasted for over five hours.

“A joint team of forces approached the suspected spot when the hiding terrorists fired upon them. It was retaliated, triggering an encounter”, the officer, who didn’t wish to be identified, said.

Three of the seven terrorists were gunned down on Saturday morning in the Pulwama district. “We have seized heavy arms and ammunition from their possession”, the officer added.

On Friday evening, four terrorists were shot dead and one was nabbed by security forces in Shopian district.

Officials revealed that two of these four terrorists who were shot dead were involved in the kidnapping and killing of a federally governing Bharatiya Janata Party member.

According to the officials, terror incidents have seen a steep rise, with over 150 terrorists killed in encounters since the beginning of the year until July.

As per the data, terrorists have carried out around 80 attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 security personnel and 13 civilians have been killed, while over 50 officials have sustained injuries.”

“A group of activists burned a copy of the Islamic holy book and uploaded the video, depicting it online after police arrested a leader of “Hard Line” political party.

Mass riots hit Malmo, Sweden after a public Koran burning. At least three hundred enraged people rallied in the Muslim-majority neighbourhoods, with a crowd torching cars and throwing stones at the police officers, who tried to ease the tensions.

“We have ongoing and violent riots right now that we have no control over”, police spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told journalists.

?Videos from Malmo show the crowd chanting “Allahu Akbar”, while the officers are trying to contain the unrest.

?However, there have been no reports on casualties from the riots so far.

Earlier in the day, Rasmus Paludan, Danish lawyer and head of the “Hard Line” political group was arrested near Malmo and expelled from the country by Swedish authorities.

According to the police, Paludan, who had previously burned Koran, wrapped in slices of bacon, planned to perform another burning of the book during a mass event. “He was going to break the law”, the police said, noting that his behaviour posed danger to the society.”

“A Banksy-funded refugee rescue boat is stranded in the Mediterranean Sea with a dead migrant onboard after ship’s deck became overcrowded.

Ship leaders are now pleading for help but claim that emergency calls to coast guard for assistance are being ignored.

There are more than 200 people on board the Louise Michel, including 10 crew members, with dozens of migrants suffering from fuels burns and dehydration after days at sea.

The former French navy boat – launched last week featuring a Banksy painting depicting a young girl holding on to a heart-shaped safety float – is currently off the coast of Malta.

  6. 21 Police Injured After 200 Migrants Riot in Spanish City (breitbart, Aug 29, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/08/29/21-police-injured-after-200-migrants-riot-in-spanish-city/

“At least 33 migrants housed in a temporary reception centre in the Spanish city of Melilla were arrested after a riot broke out that led to 21 police officers becoming injured.

The riot came after a second day of protests by migrants over positive cases of the Chinese coronavirus among some of the reception centre’s residents.

At least 200 migrants took part in the rioting, with the angry mob assaulting Spanish police officers by throwing rocks. At least two migrants were also injured during the violence, La Voz de Galicia reports.

Spanish populist party VOX posted footage of the riot on Twitter, and the party’s leader Santiago Abascal commented: “The progressive dictatorship presents them to us as poor victims, but their violence and the consequences of the invasion are suffered by the guards and ordinary Spaniards. The invaders must be deported.”…”

  7. UN expresses concern over ‘dramatic turn’ in Libya crisis (abcnews, Aug 29, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/expresses-concern-dramatic-turn-libya-crisis-72698980

“The United Nations on Saturday voiced alarm over what it called “a dramatic turn of events” in Libya’s civil war, after a power struggle between leaders of the Tripoli-based government surfaced in the wake of anti-corruption protests.

“Libya is witnessing a dramatic turn of events that underlines the urgent need to return to a full and inclusive political process,” the U.N. support mission in Libya said.

Protests over deteriorating economic conditions erupted earlier this week in the capital and elsewhere in western Libya, which is controlled by forces loyal to the U.N.-supported government.

In Tripoli, local militia allied with the government opened fire on the demonstrators using rifles and truck-mounted guns, and abducted some of the protesters.

Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj and his interior minister, Fathi Bashaga, initially accused “outlawed infiltrators” over the violence. The prime minister also said the protesters “did not obtain necessary permits” for their rally and described their demonstrations as “riots.”

However on Friday, Sarraj suspended Bashaga and referred him to an administrative investigation after the interior minister accused a government-allied militia of attacking the peaceful protesters in Tripoli this week.

Bashaga, who was excluded from two high-profile military and security meetings in the capital over the past few days, quickly responded. He said in a statement he accepted the premier’s decision but demanded a public and live questioning “to expose the facts” of the incident.

Following the suspension of the interior minister, militias in Tripoli celebrated the decision by firing into the air, while others in Bashaga’s hometown of Misrata took to the streets to show support for the minister.

The U.N. mission in Libya, known as UNSMIL, said it was still concerned about “the excessive use of force against demonstrators as well as the arbitrary arrest of a number of civilians.” It did not say how many people were detained.

Retweeting the UNSMIL’s statement, the U.S. embassy in Libya urged Sarraj and Bashaga toward “cooperation” in the interests “the Libyan people.”

Over the past two days, militias sealed off main streets and roads to prevent the demonstrators from reaching Tripoli’s Martyrs Square, the epicenter of the protests, according to two residents who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear reprisals.

A group of women however protested in the city center before being dispersed. Two women were wounded and four others were arrested, according to the protest movement, known as “Hirak Aug. 23.”

The movement called for civil disobedience until achieving their demands that include handing over power to the Supreme Judicial Council to work towards presidential and parliamentary elections.

Protests also spread to the southern town of Sabah and the eastern town of Quba, both under the control of rival east-based Libyan forces led by Khalifa Hifter.

The U.N. also said it is concerned about “on-going human rights violations and abuses” in the coastal city of Sirte, which is controlled by Hifter’s forces since January. It said at least one civilian was killed and several others were arrested.

“The prolific use of hate speech and incitement to violence appears designed to further divide Libyans, increase polarization and tear at the country’s social fabric,” the U.N. mission said.

Oil-rich Libya was plunged into chaos when a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi, who was later killed. The country is now split between rival east- and west-based administrations, each backed by different armed groups and foreign governments.”

  8. UN refugee agency urges Greece to probe alleged pushbacks (abcnews, Aug 29, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/refugee-agency-urges-greece-probe-alleged-pushbacks-72688685

“The U.N. refugee agency called Friday for an investigation into reports that people seeking shelter in Greece were returned to Turkey in possible violation of international law.

The Geneva-based agency told The Associated Press that it was aware of “a number of credible reports of people being informally returned to Turkey after reaching Greek soil or territorial waters.”

Among them was an event earlier this month in which a German naval vessel operating in the Aegean Sea reported seeing an inflatable boat with people on board being transferred from the Greek coast guard to the Turkish coast guard.

According to the U.N., about 11,500 asylum-seekers have reached Greece so far this year, many crossing the sea from Turkey on small, overladen boats.

The incident was cited in a German government response to an opposition lawmaker’s request for information about alleged cases of refugee boats being blocked or pushed back into Turkish waters by Greek or EU border vessels patrolling the Mediterranean.

“On Aug. 15, 2020, the handover of an inflatable boat with persons on board from the Greek to the Turkish coast guard was documented by the German contribution to the NATO support mission in the Aegean, the supply ship Berlin,” Germany’s deputy foreign minister, Miguel Berger, wrote in response to a query from Left party lawmaker Andrej Hunko.

Hunko criticized the German navy for failing to stop the potentially illegal pushback of people wanting to claim asylum in Greece.

The German Defense Ministry confirmed that the incident occurred east of the Greek island of Lesbos, outside of international waters, adding that based on maritime law it was “neither necessary nor possible” for the Berlin to intervene.

The Greek coast guard didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a statement Friday, the U.N. refugee agency said it didn’t have the means to independently verify the reported incidents.

“But given the nature, content, frequency, and consistency of these accounts, a proper investigation should be launched without further delay,” it said. “Any state that is presented with an asylum request at its borders is required under international law to provide admission at least on a temporary basis to examine the claim.””

    • Both countries are in NATO, so what is Turkey doing!? It’s intimidation, I get it, but what do they hope to achieve?

I’m no aviation expert, but I noticed some peculiar things. Halfway through the video you hear “fuel bingo”, i.e., the plane has just enough fuel to get back to base. But he keeps chasing the Greek F-16. Not sure how long, there are cuts in the footage. At least a few more minutes I guess.

The Greek pilot was aware, and was performing evasive maneuvres.

Does anybody know where this happened? Whose airpsace?

  12. Report: Northern Ireland Suffers Attacks on Places of Worship Every Three Days (breitbart, Aug 29, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/08/29/report-northern-ireland-suffers-attacks-on-places-of-worship-every-3-days/

“Northern Ireland has registered over 600 attacks on churches and other places of worship over the past five years for an average of one attack every three days, a new report reveals.

CARE NI, a Christian charity, made a Freedom of Information request and found that there have been 601 crimes recorded as criminal damage to religious buildings, churchyards, or cemeteries in Northern Ireland since 2014/15.

The highest number of attacks on places of worship — more than a quarter — have taken place in Belfast City, which has suffered 173 incidents of vandalism, profanation, arson, graffiti, and desecration.

CARE said that the surprisingly high number of incidents has prompted renewed calls for action to protect churches and other religious buildings, adding that the Executive needs to consider policies to meet this need, which could include installation of CCTV, fencing, and lighting.

Rev. Aaron McAlister, Rector of Derriaghy Parish Church in County Antrim, said he would support such measures.

“In November 2019, our Church was broken in to and vandalised. Significant damage was caused to our vestry and our sanctuary,” Rev. McAlister said.

“The individuals concerned managed to get in behind our organ while searching for valuables but fortunately there was nothing to take,” he added. “It left many of my parishioners deeply upset. An attack on a place of worship is an attack on the community that worships there.”

“I would support additional Government measures to protect places of worship. Action to prevent attacks happening to other faith communities would be hugely welcome,” he noted.

CARE NI Policy Officer, Mark Baillie, registered his agreement, saying that churches and other places of worship in Northern Ireland have been attacked with “alarming regularity.”

“More than 600 attacks in the last five years is a reminder that places of worship, which should be safe spaces for worshippers and congregants, are all too often targeted by vandalism and violence,” Mr. Baillie said.

“It is a human right for individuals to live out and practice their religious beliefs and attacks on places of worship offend against those rights,” he said. “In a free and democratic society, no-one should be afraid of gathering together with those who share their faith in a place of worship.””

  14. Russian military intercepts US B-52 strategic bomber over Black Sea

Russia has intercepted a US B-52 strategic bomber as it was heading toward Russian airspace over the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry says.

The ministry said that late on Friday night Russian air defense control systems picked up an intruder aircraft on radar approaching the Russian border over the neutral waters of the Black Sea.

It added that two Russian Su-27 fighters were scrambled from the Southern Military District’s air defense forces “to identify the air target and prevent violation of the Russian state border.”

The two Russian warplanes identified the approaching aircraft as a US Boeing B-52 Stratofortress long-range subsonic strategic bomber, before forcing it to turn away from the Russian border, it further said.

“The entire flight of Russian fighters Su-27 was conducted strictly in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace,” the Russian Defense Ministry added.

Earlier on Friday, Russia’s National Defense Management Center said in a statement that a Russian Su-27 fighter jet was scrambled to ward off a US Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea.

“After the US reconnaissance plane moved away from Russia’s state border, the Russian fighter safely returned to its home airfield,” the center added, stressing that entire interception process occurred “in strict compliance with the international rules of using the airspace.”

For the past several weeks, Russian airspace control systems have been detecting numerous aircraft heading toward the Russian border over the neutral waters of the Black Sea, according to Russia’s Sputnik news agency.

American bombers and spy planes, as well as NATO aircraft, have frequently been detected near Russia’s borders.

The provocative flights have particularly increased in frequency since 2014, when the then-Ukrainian territory of Crimea joined Russia following a referendum and when a military conflict erupted in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly expressed concern about the increasing activities of the US-led NATO forces near its western borders.

  16. Scores injured as police break up Muslim march in Kashmir
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/scores-injured-police-break-muslim-march-kashmir-72702083

“Government forces on Saturday fired shotgun pellets and tear gas to disperse hundreds of Shia Muslims participating in a traditional religious procession in the Indian-controlled Kashmir, injuring scores, eyewitnesses said.

An officer at the police control room in the main city of Srinagar said the mourners on the outskirts of the city violated coronavirus prohibitory orders in place that restrict all religious processions and gatherings across the disputed region.

A duty officer said the police were confirming the number of injured.

Medics at one hospital said they treated at least 30 people, some of them with pellet and teargas injuries. Many injured were taken to another hospital.

Videos circulating on social media showed police in armed vehicles warning the mourners, who were beating their chests and reciting elegies to mourn the martyrs of Karbala as part of the Muharram ritual, to disperse before firing shotgun pellets and tear gas on them. Some mourners were also seen raising slogans seeking an end to the Indian rule in the disputed region.

“The procession was not just peaceful but was also following health protocols,” said Sajjad Hussain, an eyewitness. “They (government forces) unleashed such violence and did not spare even women mourners.”

Police broke up several such processions in the region this week.

Officials said at least 200 people were detained in Srinagar this week for participating in Muharram processions and at least seven people were arrested under an anti-terror law for raising pro-freedom slogans.

Some main Muharram processions have been banned in Indian-controlled Kashmir since an armed insurgency broke out in 1989 demanding the region’s independence from India or its merger with neighboring Pakistan.

Such measures are particularly galling to Kashmiri Muslims. They have long complained that the government curbs their religious freedom on the pretext of law and order while promoting and patronizing an annual Hindu pilgrimage to the Himalayan Amarnath Shrine in Kashmir that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Conditions have worsened in Kashmir since August last year, when New Delhi stripped the region of its statehood and semi-autonomy, setting off widespread anger and economic ruin under a harsh security clampdown.”

Rioting will no longer be free.

Republican Congressman Jim Banks of Indiana introduced legislation to strip coronavirus unemployment benefits and other federal welfare payments to individuals convicted of felony riot offenses. The Support Peaceful Protest Act was introduced in the House of Representatives on Friday.

The legislation would remove eligibility for buffed coronavirus unemployment benefits for anyone convicted of criminal conduct at and during the course of a protest. The federal government has been paying for buffed welfare payments in the duration of the coronavirus pandemic, and Banks raised concern that left-wing rioters are taking advantage of the welfare to embrace a lifestyle of full-time riot agitation and political crime.

  24. Greece-Turkey spat heats up; NATO chief warns about lack of progress in negotiations
James Carstensen, CNSNews August 28, 2020

[Ed. – It’s still mostly a matter of rhetoric and close encounters in the Aegean. But it’s going the wrong direction. After Erdogan ostentatiously hosted a Hamas delegation this week, many are asking how compatible Turkey still is with NATO. But with no vision for a post-Turkey NATO – such as what the alliance is even for at this point – no one is ready to take that on. Carstensen has a good summary of the current situation.]

NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg voiced concern Wednesday about an apparent failure by Germany to mediate between quarrelling NATO members Turkey and Greece over competing drilling claims in the eastern Mediterranean.

    […]

On Tuesday, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas met counterparts in Greece and in Turkey. Despite those mediation attempts, Greece has invited French and United Arab Emirates to hold joint military exercises in the region. Meanwhile Turkey has launched its own drills, sparking fears the tensions could spill over into conflict.

NATO Chief Worried After No Progress Seen in Effort to Mediate Between Rival Members Greece, Turkey

    • The following is from the CNS article:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday flatly rejected any notion of “compromise.”

“Turkey will take what is its right in the Mediterranean, in the Aegean and in the Black Sea,” he said. “We will never compromise on what belongs to us. We are determined to do whatever is necessary in political, economic and military terms.”

Erdogan also warned “interlocutors” to “avoid mistakes that will lead to their ruin” – an apparent reference to the UAE, which has sent four F-16 fighter aircraft to the Greek island of Crete, and France, which sent Rafale fighters to Crete and a frigate to the area last week.

Erdogan is telling the world that he is going to rebuild the Ottoman Empire and retake all of the land in Europe and the Middle East it use to control. The world leaders need to pay close attention to this statement but most of them won’t. They will try appeasement and when that fails will refuse to fight the war to win until things are so bad all of the rules are thrown out the window.

      • Burak Bekdil, who knows the political territory:

        Erdogan Needs New Enemies

All those Turkish-Greek tensions in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas bolster a century-long Turkish nostalgia to take back some of the Greek islands. Yeni Safak, a fiercely pro-Erdogan newspaper, suggested that the Turkish military should invade 16 Greek islands.

“Discussion of wars and invading Greek islands is… a tactic used by the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to distract the Turkish population from the woeful economic situation.” – Greek City Times.

Erdogan needs epic stories of military might against real or fabricated foreign enemies to tell an increasing number of grudging voters in the face of an ailing economy. That is bad news for the entire region.

  25. Anti-Islam Protest in Oslo Ends With Tearing of Koran and Brawls With Police – Photos (sputniknews, Aug 29, 2020)

“The development comes as violent riots broke out in Sweden, following the burning of a Koran during a demonstration organized by an anti-Islam group in the city of Malmo. Law enforcement is bracing for another night of riots and asked Norwegian authorities for reinforcement.

One person was reportedly injured and 20 arrested following a protest in the Norwegian capital Oslo, organized by a group called “Stop Islamization of Norway” or SIAN. Tensions escalated after a demonstrator started tearing pages from a Koran, the sacred text of the Islamic faith.

?Scuffles occurred between SIAN demonstrators and counter protesters, who bypassed a police perimeter as well as between counter-protesters and law enforcement officers, when the former tried to remove police barricades.

Initially the demonstrators on both sides behaved peacefully with people chanted slogans. The situation escalated after the leader of the SIAN group denounced an Islamic religious figure, the prophet Muhammad.

Protests in Oslo come as Malmo, Sweden’s third-largest city, on Friday saw violence after a Danish right-wing group, Stram Kurs (Hard Line), filmed the burning of a Koran in a public park. After the video was posted online more than 300 people gathered in the city to voice their anger. The demonstration quickly turned violent with people burning tires, throwing stones fireworks at police.

?A large fire occurred in an underground parking garage, as well. Following the riots, city police asked Norwegian authorities for reinforcements as they said they had “no control” over the situation.”

  26. Soros DA Diana Becton Requires Officers Consider Whether a Looter “Needed” Stolen Goods Before Charging

Last week we brought you the story of Nichelle Holmes, a Deputy District Attorney in California who made social media posts proclaiming “We want more than a citation for vandalism” for the couple who painted over a Black Lives Matter mural in her jurisdiction. The office has now charged the couple with a “hate crime.”

Holmes’ boss, Diana Becton, is in her first term as elected District Attorney, one of a number of district attorneys heavily supported by lefty billionaire George Soros. Sources tell RedState that as soon as Becton took over she implemented major changes in the way the office was run and in the way crimes were charged and how aggressively cases were prosecuted. One recent change, which I’ll address further in a moment, has to do with charging people for “looting,” which is basically stealing during a state of emergency (i.e., protests or riots).

  29. Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay apologizes for tweet linking Chrystia Freeland to George Soros

OTTAWA — Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay is apologizing for “thoughtlessly” spreading material about Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland from a source she said she later discovered traffics in hateful conspiracy theories.

The Conservatives’ environment critic retweeted a video ofFreeland interviewing billionaire George Soros when she was a journalist with the Financial Times in 2009 and commented that their closeness should alarm every Canadian.

The edited two-minute clip shows Soros advocating for then-U.S. president Barack Obama to bring China into what the financier describes as a “new world order, a financial world order.”

Soros, who is Jewish, is a frequent bogeyman of conspiracy theories from far-right figures in the U.S., his native Hungary and beyond.

In a post Saturday morning, Findlay wrote that Freeland listened carefully to Soros “like student to teacher.”

Findlay deleted the retweet Saturday afternoon and apologized, saying she never meant to endorse what she called “hateful rhetoric.”

“I thoughtlessly shared content from what I am now learning is a source that promotes hateful conspiracy theories. I have removed the tweets and apologize,” Findlay wrote.

The U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish advocacy organization, says in a 2018 blog post that Soros “has become a lightning rod for conservative and right-wing groups who object to his funding of liberal causes.”

“In far-right circles worldwide, Soros’ philanthropy often is recast as fodder for outsized conspiracy theories, including claims that he masterminds specific global plots or manipulates particular events to further his goals,” the ADL’s post reads.

“Many of those conspiracy theories employ longstanding anti-Semitic myths, particularly the notion that rich and powerful Jews work behind the scenes, plotting to control countries and manipulate global events.”

Newly minted Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.

  30. Italy: Head of migrant center raped by Nigerian migrant residing there
    https://rmx.news/article/article/italy-head-of-migrant-center-raped-by-nigerian-migrant-residing-there

“An Italian woman serving as the head of a migrant center in Palermo has testified of how she was raped by a Nigerian migrant who lived at the very center where she worked.

The suspect, Hope Omnolodion, remains on the run from Italian police, according to a report from Italian news outlet Il Giornale.

In a court in Palermo, where Omnolodion is being tried in absentia, the victim testified in front of Judge Lorenzo Matasso and prosecutor Paola Cucchiara.

The woman said that Omnolodion was a resident at the migrant center where she worked, and that the staff there often had problems with the man during the time he lived there. During his stay, he directed inappropriate verbal remarks and physical contact towards the woman.

The woman said that it slowly got worse, with the Nigerian migrant telling her that he wanted her. He would also often come up behind her and touch her in an inappropriate manner.

She also said in another encounter, Omnolodion briefly strangled her as she was getting into her car.

“I think he was angry and disappointed about a negative outcome he received for an international commission [he applied for], which unfortunately he did not receive… He thought I was the reason why,” she said.

She said that Omnolodion choked her hard, causing bruising, but quickly released the pressure after a few seconds.

The judge questioned her why she had not reported the inappropriate encounters earlier. The woman replied that she had reported them internally to other staff members of the organization, but did not go to the police out of fear.

“At first, I was frightened of this situation and out fear I did not understand how I should react, but I immediately reported [the incidents] to my colleagues… I also always informed the managers of the organization by email,” she said.

    ‘I wanted to forget everything’
One day, she accompanied Omnolodion to a doctor’s check-up.

“He was suffering from respiratory problems. We went to the hospital in Partinico, I parked and when we got out, he threatened me with a knife in a secluded area and forced me to have sex,” she said.

She described being “terrified” during the encounter.

The woman reported the incident to a colleague and a doctor who prescribed a variety of tests. She immediately went to a pharmacy and took the morning-after pill.

“Instinctively, I was terrified, I wanted to forget everything,” the victim said in tears.

Eventually, she went to the police about what happened.

During the court hearing, she testified that she is still frightened to go anywhere because Omnolodion is still on the loose.

“I try to never move alone, even more so because he is a fugitive,” she said. “I’m afraid he may appear suddenly.””

  31. Qatar supplies UK with 50% of its annual gas needs
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200829-qatar-supplies-uk-with-50-of-its-annual-gas-needs/

“Qatari natural gas exports have recently grown in the global market, as the country has become one of the UK’s major gas exporters.

In a report, Scientect website revealed that Qatar is among the leading exporters of natural gas to the UK, which is considered to be the world’s eighth-largest gas importer.

Qatar supplied the UK with nearly 50 per cent of its annual needs last year, according to the website.

In 2019, the UK received 65 Qatari shipments, delivering 6.7 million tonnes of liquified natural gas (LGN) to the UK, which had a total need of approximately 14 million tonnes.

The report pointed out that last year, Qatar provided a value twice the amount required by the UK, compared with previous years, estimated at 6.1 million tonnes of natural gas.

It explained that Doha was able to reach this high level of production to the UK via the South Hook LGN terminal, which is the main gateway for Qatari gas to the UK.”

  32. Pakistan asks TikTok to block ‘vulgar, immoral content’
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/2261635/pakistan-asks-tiktok-to-block-vulgar-immoral-content

“The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Friday asked video-sharing platform TikToK to block vulgar, indecent and immoral content for viewership in Pakistan.

“Keeping in view the growing concerns in the society with respect to content on the platform, the PTA chairman had an online meeting with senior management of TikTok,” according to an official statement issued by the telecom authority.

The PTA chairman Major General (retd) Amir Azeem Bajwa, while acknowledging the recent efforts of the platform for taking down the indecent content, asked the platform to put in place stronger content monitoring and moderation mechanism so that the unlawful material is not accessible or viewed within Pakistan.

    Final warning

In July, the PTA had issued a “final warning” to Chinese-owned social media app to clamp down on what it called “immoral, obscene and vulgar” content on the video-sharing platform.

In its response earlier this month, TikTok shared a content moderation mechanism for removing any potentially harmful or inappropriate content from its platform, saying that Pakistan is one of the five markets with the largest volume of removed videos.

The company said content moderation is performed by deploying a combination of policies, technologies, and moderation strategies to detect and review problematic content, accounts and implement appropriate penalties…”

“The Turkish vice president on Aug. 29 called on the EU for equity amid ongoing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In an exclusive interview with state-run Anadolu Agency, Fuat Oktay said: “Turkey expects equity from the EU, no one should expect Ankara to take a step back based on this equity.”

Oktay further asked: “If the Greek attempts to expand its territorial waters isn’t a cause of war, then what is?” stressing that the country “will protect its rights on every cubic meter in the Eastern Mediterranean waters no matter what.”

“It is insincere for the EU to call for dialogue on the one hand and make other plans on the other, regarding the activities we carry out in our own continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean,” Oktay also said on via his Twitter account…”
