Reader’s Links for August 21, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. EU should urge Greece, Greek Cyprus for restraint, Turkey says
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/eu-should-urge-greece-s-cyprus-for-restraint-turkey-says-157571

“Turkey on Aug. 20 called on the EU to urge Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration for restraint rather than Turkey amid escalating tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“If the EU wants to be a part of the process that aims peace, prosperity and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, it must be objective and honest. As shared with the public earlier, the calls for restraint should be directed to Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration, which harm EU’s interests and escalate tension by exploiting the EU membership solidarity, rather than Turkey on the side of dialogue and cooperation,” Hami Aksoy, the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said in a written statement.

His remarks came as a response to a statement by the EU following a videoconference on Aug. 19.

Aksoy said the statement shows that the EU is “held hostage to the manipulation and blackmail of the two-member states.”

He also stressed that Turkey will not abdicate its rights, yet, continue to support negotiations and respond to positive steps around good neighborly relations and in line with international law.

Turkey accuses Greece of pursuing maximalist policies in the Eastern Mediterranean and underlines that its maritime claims violate sovereign rights of Turkey, the country with the longest coastline in the region.

Turkey has consistently opposed Greece’s efforts to declare an exclusive economic zone based on small islands near Turkish shores, violating Turkey’s legitimate interests.

Turkey has also said energy resources near Cyprus must be shared fairly between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)- which has issued Turkish Petroleum a license- and the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has said the only solution to the dispute lies through dialogue and negotiation, and urged Athens to respect Turkey’s rights.

After Greece and Egypt signed a controversial maritime delimitation deal earlier this month, Ankara resumed energy exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean in an area within the country’s continental shelf…”

  2. Turkish forces ‘neutralize’ 5 terrorists in N.Iraq
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/turkish-forces-neutralize-5-terrorists-in-niraq/1948785

“Turkish security forces “neutralized” five more terrorists as part of the ongoing Operation Claw-Tiger in northern Iraq, the country’s National Defense Ministry said on Friday.

“A total of 107 terrorists have been neutralized so far,” the ministry said in a statement.

It added that shelters and caves were also destroyed during the operation.

Turkish authorities use the term “neutralize” to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

The terrorist group was not named in the statement, but the PKK has been active in the region.

Turkey’s operations Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle were launched in June to ensure the safety of the Turkish people and borders by neutralizing the threat of PKK and other terrorist groups that often use northern Iraq to plan cross-border attacks.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU — has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.”

  3. Turkey arrests 6 Iraqis for Daesh/ISIS links
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/turkey-arrests-6-iraqis-for-daesh-isis-links/1948700

“At least six suspects have been arrested in Turkey’s Black Sea region for links to the Daesh/ISIS terror group, a security source said on Friday.

The suspects were apprehended in simultaneous operations by anti-terror and intelligence teams in the northern Samsun province, said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The teams raided multiple locations in the province’s Ilkadim and Tekkekoy districts, the source added.

Digital materials were also seized in the operations.

The suspects underwent medical examinations after their arrest.

Turkey was one of the first countries to recognize Daesh/ISIS as a terrorist group in 2013.

The country has since been targeted by the terror group numerous times, with at least 10 suicide attacks, seven bombings, and four armed attacks claiming at least 315 lives and injuring hundreds more.

In response, Turkey launched military and police operations at home and abroad to prevent further terror attacks.”

“There are currently 1,400 migrants on Lampedusa after five more landings on the stepping-stone island between Italy and North Africa, sources said Friday.

Overall, some 276 migrants have arrived on the island south of Sicily in the space of eight hours.

They have been added to the 250 who arrived Thursday on six boats.

The overnight landings ranged from the minimum of a small boat with six Tunisians aboard to a maximum of 72 migrants on the biggest craft, including Libyans and sub Saharans.

Most of the boats were rescued by port authority and finance guard vessels.
Migrant reception facilities on Lampedusa have been packed way beyond capacity for several weeks.

The nationalist opposition League party has accused the government of doing little to stem the arrivals”

  5. Libya: IOM, first migrant repatriation after 5-month pause

“The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Friday its first voluntary humanitarian flight to repatriate migrants from Libya following a temporary interruption of the Voluntary Humanitarian Return Programme (VHR) programme over the past five months.

The flight carried 118 Ghanaians – including seven women, three children, and two newborns – who were stuck in Libya due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and departed for Accra on Thursday.

All of the passengers underwent a health screening prior to boarding the flight and were given personal protective equipment including face masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer.

The migrants also received psychosocial support.

In a statement, IOM said it will continue to provide support during a 14-day quarantine period in Ghana and later, reintegration assistance.

IOM spokesperson Safa Msehli said conflict and COVID-19 have severely impacted the livelihoods of migrants in Libya, and IOM has received many new requests for assistance in voluntary humanitarian repatriation in recent months.

Other voluntary repatriation flights are planned, but a flight scheduled for next week to Mali had to be postponed.

The VHR programme, which began in 2015, helped 1,466 stranded migrants return home from Libya in the first quarter of 2020.

Last year, the programme helped 9,800 people return to 34 countries of origin in Africa and Asia.”

  7. German government took two children away from Polish Catholic mother and gave them to Muslim families
    https://rmx.news/article/article/german-government-took-two-children-away-from-polish-catholic-mother-and-gave-them-to-muslim-families

“The German Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt), which claims to promote the welfare of children, has taken away two children of a Polish mother, Klaudia Majewska, causing outrage in Poland and prompting press inquiries that the German office refuses to answer.

The Jugendamt separated the children, a 3-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy, and put them under the care of Muslim families from Turkey. In response, the Polish Association Against Child Discrimination in Germany has taken action, and a court hearing concerning the fate of the children is scheduled for Friday.

Majewska went to a social agency in Germany in 2018 to help find a home for herself and her family. She had been living at her mother’s home in the meantime. The Jugendamt instead decided to take her 6-month-old baby away from her, and later her young daughter. The children were put into Turkish Muslim families.

The agency only permits minimal contact between the mother and the children. Majewska and her children are Polish citizens, and she has claimed that her children are being mistreated.

The Jugendamt has refused to comment on the issue despite pressure from the Polish Press Agency.

Wojciech Pomorski of the Polish Association Against Child Discrimination in Germany has decided to investigate the matter. He emphasized that there is no clear reason for the German youth welfare agency to take the children away from Majewska and that their separation and placement in Turkish families is scandalous.

“In such a situation, if the children had to be temporarily separated from their mother, they should have been placed in a family close to them both culturally and linguistically,” he said.

A case is currently underway in a German family court. On Aug. 21, it will be decided whether the children will return to her mother. According to unofficial information, the Polish ambassador to Germany Andrzej Przy??bski will be present at the hearing.”
