Reader’s Links for August 14, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  3. Turkey Warns France Against Escalation Over Oruc Reis Vessel in Mediterranean (sputniknews, Aug 14, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/202008141080168973-turkeys-foreign-minister-warns-athens-will-get-response-if-greece-provokes-oruc-reis-vessel/

“Previously, the European Union and the United States warned that they would impose sanctions on Ankara if Turkish vessels continue operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, stating that Turkey is conducting the operations illegally.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Friday that if Greek forces continue to “attack” the Oruc Reis, his country will retaliate.

His words were echoed by Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who said that Greece should not provoke the vessel “like it did before”, also warning that there would be a response. Cavusoglu also noted that Switzerland has offered to mediate in the conflict and that Ankara has agreed in principle.

Oruc Reis started exploration drilling in Greek-claimed waters in the Mediterranean on Monday, which led to a massive backlash from Athens. Later in the week, reports suggested that the Greek naval frigate Limnos and the Turkish frigate Kemalreis (F-247) faced off in close proximity to the Oruc Reis.

Turkish-Greek tensions over drilling in the Mediterranean have been simmering for many months. The situation escalated last week when Athens signed an agreement with Egypt on the delimitation of maritime zones to reassert its sovereignty claims.

Ankara, however, signed an agreement with similar provisions with Libya last year. Turkey also conducted operations near Cyprus, which the EU also considers to be a violation of international law.”

  4. Erdogan Threatens to Sever Diplomatic Ties With UAE, Close Abu Dhabi Embassy Over Deal with Israel (sputniknews, Aug 14, 2020)

“The landmark trilateral deal paving the way for a normalisation of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates was announced by US President Donald Trump. The accord commits Israel to forego its plans to extend sovereignty over parts of the West Bank.

Turkey is looking at suspending its diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, close the Turkish Embassy in the capital Abu Dhabi, and recall its ambassador over the deal that the UAE made with Israel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday.

“We can recall our ambassador from Abu Dhabi if need arises, since we support the Palestinian Authority and will not give its rights away”, Erdogan told reporters.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and the United Arab Emirates had concluded a peace deal to fully normalise relations and establish diplomatic ties. The conclusion of the accord came after Israel suspended earlier plans to extend its sovereignty over parts of the West Bank, which led to the establishment of ties with the UAE.

The Gulf monarchy is the third Arab nation to have established ties with Israel, the other two being Egypt and Jordan. The US president voiced hope that more Arab and Muslim states will agree to normalise relations with Israel.

    Turkey’s Reaction
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has strongly opposed the Israeli-Emirati peace accord. The ministry said that the UAE had no right to strike the deal and its act of “betrayal” of the Palestinian cause will never be forgiven.

Turkey also pledged to back the Palestinian Authority, which previously condemned the agreement.

The PA Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that it was recalling its top diplomat in Abu Dhabi in protest over the UAE’s decision to normalise diplomatic ties with Israel.”

  18. Turkish Strikes Kill Three Kurds in Iraq: Mayor
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/08/14/turkish-strikes-iraq/

“Turkish bombardment killed three Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq, a local official said Friday, as Baghdad seeks to rally support to end Ankara’s offensive on its soil.

Turkey launched a cross-border ground and air operation in mid-June against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rebels in the mountainous terrain of northern Iraq.

“A Turkish bombardment targeted a car in the village of Rashanki, in Dohuk province, killing three PKK fighters, and injuring a fourth who fled,” said Mushir Bashir, the local mayor, of the bombardment late Thursday.

The men, who were traveling in an off-road vehicle, were killed when they stopped outside a grocery store, he added.

  19. Mozambique Battles Jihadists To Regain Key Port Town
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/08/14/mozambique-jihadists-port/

“Mozambican security forces were Thursday engaged in a “tense” battle with Islamist militants to regain control of a key port in a gas-rich northern province, Defence Minister Jaime Neto said.

Neto was speaking a day after the insurgents staged an early morning attack and captured the port town of Mocimboa da Praia.

“At this moment, the defense and security forces are trying to control the situation,” Neto told reporters in the capital Maputo. “However, it remains tense and fluid.”

Neto said the militants had infiltrated various neighborhoods in civilian clothes, before unleashing terror, looting, and killing government troops and civilians.

The assault was the latest in a string of intensifying attacks that have plagued the country’s northern region since 2017.

Authorities at Mozambique‘s defense forces (FDS) confirmed that “terrorists” had launched “sequenced attacks” on several villages surrounding the port over the past week in an attempt to occupy the town.

Striking Mocimboa da Praia for the third time this year, the brazen attack was orchestrated a stone’s throw from the heart of the site of natural gas projects worth billions of dollars.

Mocimboa da Praia lies less than 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the Afungi peninsula where a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, one of Africa’s biggest single investment projects, is located.

The port in the Cabo Delgado province is a major traffic hub for the gas project…”

  20. US Will Do Utmost to Renew Iran Arms Embargo, Says Pompeo
    https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/2448291/us-will-do-utmost-renew-iran-arms-embargo-says-pompeo

“The United States will do everything in its power to renew the international arms embargo on Iran under review at the United Nations, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday.

The UN Security Council has started voting on a US bid to renew the embargo, expiring in mid-October. Veto-powers Russia and China are opposed, and results are due within hours.

Visiting Austria as part of a tour of central Europe, Pompeo said Iran must also provide full and immediate cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear watchdog, whose head he met in Vienna.

“It makes no sense to permit the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism to purchase and sell weapons systems,” Pompeo told a news conference. “I mean, that’s just nuts.”

    Iran denies promoting terrorism.

Pompeo said Washington would “do everything that we can within our diplomatic toolset to ensure that arms embargo doesn’t expire”.

“The voting will be in the next handful of hours and we are hoping that we will be successful. When we see the results, we will make the decision about how to move forward.

“We have been unambiguous about the fact we have no intention of allowing this arms embargo to expire. None whatsoever.”

The embargo is set to end mid-October under Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which US President Donald Trump’s administration quit in 2018.

IAEA head Rafael Grossi, whose agency is policing Iran’s nuclear deal with major powers, told reporters after meeting Pompeo that talks with Tehran on full access to all sites continued.

“We have requested Iran to grant access. That hasn’t happened yet. We are working on that,” he said.

“Our objective is to get access to continue the verification work which is essential for the international community.””

“Wilayat Sinai , the Daesh-affiliate in Egypt’s north-eastern peninsula, has executed four people over their alleged cooperation with the Egyptian Army in North Sinai, Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed reported citing tribal sources.

The execution took place in the North Sinai city of Bir Al-Abd.

For the past three weeks, Wilayat Sinai, which pledged allegiance to Daesh in 2014, has been in control of five towns in Bir Al-Abd’s vicinity – Rabaa, Katiya, Aktiya, Janayen and Merih.

Three months ago, three other Egyptians were executed by the Daesh-affiliate in the North Sinai province. Their execution took place south of Sheikh Zouweid.

The militant group has repeatedly targeted victims from the Sawarka Tribe, which it accuses of cooperating with Egyptian authorities and security apparatus.

“Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit has warned against what he termed “the Iranian-Turkish schemes of hegemony” in the Arab region and their catastrophic consequences for Arab national security, noting that the current conditions in the region require more attention in order to preserve the interests of the Arab world.

In an interview with Al-Ahram Editor-In-Chief Alaa Thabet, Abul Gheit said these two regional powers, which are seeking to control the region’s potentials and capabilities, are using “divide and rule” tactics, a policy that was once used by the colonial powers.

He warned against Iranian and Turkish schemes which are aimed at obliterating Arab national states and turning them into sectarian districts that can be controlled by armed militias.

Every erosion of an Arab state’s territory is a reduction in the sovereignty and independence of the Arab world as a whole, he said, pressing the need to fight this looming danger…”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu accused the UAE of “cullying to undermine the Palestinian administration for years.”

“It is a country that puts pressure on some Arab countries regarding Palestine. We say clearly that it betrayed the Palestinian cause for its interests” he said on Aug. 14 speaking at a press conference in Switzerland.

Turkish Foreign Ministry said history will never forgive the “hypocritical behavior” of the UAE in agreeing such a deal…”

“The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 83 asylum seekers on Friday who were pushed back by Greek coastal authorities into Turkish waters off the Aegean coast, according to security sources.

The coast guard team was dispatched to the area off the coast of Datca district in southwestern Mugla province after receiving information that the asylum seekers were stranded on a dinghy.

They were brought to the shore on a coast guard vessel before being transferred to the provincial migration office.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum seekers aiming to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

The country opened its gates earlier this year to asylum seekers seeking to cross to Europe, accusing the European Union of failing to keep its promises under a 2016 migrant deal.”
