Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. Germany: Right-wing extremism and racism “biggest threat to security” – Seehofer

German Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer said right-wing extremism, racism and anti-Semitism are the “biggest threat to security in Germany,” at a conference during which he presented the 2019 German constitutional protection report, in Berlin on Thursday.

“This threat has not ended, on the contrary, the number of incidents involving people from the right-wing extremism and electable platforms has continued to increase,” explained Seehofer.

At the presser, the President of the federal office for the protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, reiterated Seehofer’s comments, as he pointed the dangers of other institutions and organisations using right-wing extremism narratives.

“I am speaking about right-wing extremism, the political implementation, or the bloodbath in a synagogue. I am speaking about the new right, the certain people that want to legitimise their extreme views in an electorate platform. I am also speaking about left-wing extremists who kicked a police officer on the ground to his death almost,” added Haldenwang.

[…]Prime Minister Trudeau and his government have been under fire since announcing on June 25 they were awarding a $19.5 million sole-source contract to WE Charity to administer the Canada Student Service Grant, a $912 million program offering grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 to post-secondary students in return for supervised volunteer hours.

Tories call for answers on WE contract after reports Trudeau’s family was paid speaking fees

[…]Global News has confirmed reports first published by CBC News and Canadaland that Trudeau’s mother, Margaret Trudeau, and brother, Alexandre Trudeau, were paid sizeable amounts of money via a speakers’ agency for speaking at WE Charity events in recent years.

[…]The charity’s statement said that an “internal review process” has since brought to light that WE Charity paid about $64,000 directly for “a number”of speeches by Margaret Trudeau, describing the blunder as “an error in billing / payment.”

“For these speeches the charity paid the speakers’ bureau directly, and the charity was reimbursed by ME to WE Social Enterprise for their sponsorship of the speeches,” the statement said.

“This was an error and corrected by accounting. All speeches by Alexander Trudeau were paid by ME to WE Social Enterprise.”

[…]Trudeau said in late June the non-partisan public service recommended Ottawa outsource the volunteer grant program to WE Charity but admitted on Wednesday the Liberal cabinet made the final decision to award the contract and he didn’t recuse himself from the discussion or the decision-making.

“I have long worked on youth issues, both before I got into politics and since I’ve been in politics as youth critic,” the prime minister told reporters on Wednesday.

Barrett said Thursday’s news is “scandalous” and called for the ethics watchdog to “accelerate” his investigation and for the auditor general, procurement ombudsmen and two parliamentary committees to investigate the contract as well.

The House of Commons committee on government operations and estimates is scheduled to meet later Thursday to discuss a request from members to strike a study on the grant program.

Armed police have stormed an east London property with a chainsaw – as four men were arrested for plotting a terror attack.

Dramatic video shows a squad of gun-toting officers bursting into a house on Ilfracombe Gardens in Goodmayes, Redbridge, shortly before a man is dragged out and handcuffed.

The man is led away by two officers wearing armoured vests, while another is seen watching the house through the scope of what appears to be a mounted sniper.

Separate video from a neighbouring property near Green Lane by Goodmayes Park also shows armed police descending on a block of flats.

Scotland Yard said the heavy police operation in Goodmayes related to an ongoing anti-terror investigation which today saw four people arrested in both the capital and Leicestershire.

Witnesses described hearing gunshots, but the Metropolitan Police said no shots were fired during today’s raids.

  5. Egypt Holds Military Drills Dubbed ‘Resolve 2020’ Near Libyan Border
    https://sputniknews.com/africa/202007091079841127-egypt-holds-military-drills-dubbed-resolve-2020-near-libyan-border/

“Egyptian armed forces conducted an exercise near Libya’s border on Thursday, including training for the Air Force to face mercenaries of irregular armies and target their hotbeds, a military spokesman said in a statement.

“The armed forces are conducting an exercise in the western strategic region”, Egypt’s military spokesman said.

The drills, codenamed Resolve 2020, took place in the northwestern district of Qabr Gabis, some 37 miles away from the Libyan border.

According to media reports, several helicopters have raided and destroyed a hideout housing a number of mercenaries as part of the exercise, with artillery and tanks firing live ammunition.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi told the government in Tripoli last month that sending Turkey-backed troops to seize the port city of Sirte from eastern-based militia would be a “red line” and could lead to a military intervention by Egyptian forces.

Libya has been mired in a deadly nine-year, foreign-backed civil war since the assassination of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi by rebels backed by NATO air power in 2011. Currently, much of the country is divided between two centres of power — an elected parliament in the country’s east supported by the Libyan National Army of Khalifa Haftar, and the UN-backed Government of National Accord in the west, headed by Fayez Sarraj.”

  6. Employee of Angela Merkel’s Press Office Suspected of Spying for Egypt – Report
    https://sputniknews.com/society/202007091079841576-employee-of-angela-merkels-press-office-suspected-of-spying-for-egypt—report/

“An employee at German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s press office is suspected of spying for Egypt’s intelligence service, AFP reported Thursday, citing a police report.

According to the report, police conducted “executive measures” against the male suspect in December 2019 after they uncovered that he “worked for years for an Egyptian intelligence service,” AFP reported.

The report, which noted that enlisted spies purposely seek out fellow Egyptian nationals, also stated that Egyptian secret service agents in Germany collect information on groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and the Coptic Christian community.

“There are indications that Egyptian services are trying to recruit Egyptians living in Germany for intelligence purposes through their visits to Egyptian diplomatic missions in Germany and their trips to Egypt,” the report said, AFP reported.

According to German newspaper Bild Daily, the man worked at the visitor service of the Bundespresseamt federal government press office (BPA), which is led by Merkel’s spokesperson Steffen Seibart. The employee was reportedly in a mid-level position and would have completed at least two years of vocational training. Part of the investigation involved searching the visitor service premises.

An investigation into the suspect is reportedly ongoing but a spokesperson for the BPA told AFP that the press office would not comment on the investigation.

According to German Federal Foreign Office, Germany and Egypt have “intensive” economic and trade relations, with Germany being Egypt’s second-biggest trading partner following China. Egypt is also a popular tourist destination for Germans, with 1.8 million Germans having visited the Middle Eastern country in 2019.”

  7. US to Start Cyprus Military Training, Defying Turkey
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/07/09/us-cyprus-training/

“The United States said Wednesday it plans to conduct military training with Cyprus for the first time, defying NATO ally Turkey, which warned of destabilization.

The US Congress last year ended a decades-long arms embargo on the island, whose northern third is occupied by Turkey.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the State Department for the first time will fund military training for the Republic of Cyprus as part of “our expanding security relationship.”

“This is part of our efforts to enhance relationships with key regional partners to promote stability in the Eastern Mediterranean,” Pompeo told reporters.

The cooperation will be part of the US International Military Education and Training program, which seeks to train foreign officers and increase friendly nations’ interoperability with the US military.

Turkey and the self-styled Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus had warned against the end of the embargo, saying it would upset a balance of power on the island.

“As we repeatedly stressed in the past, this kind of steps do not contribute to efforts of finding a solution to the Cyprus problem but rather further strengthen the Greek Cypriot side’s uncompromising attitude,” the Turkish foreign ministry said of Pompeo’s announcement.

“It is clear that the steps that do not observe the balance between the two sides will not help to restore an environment of trust on the island as well as restoring peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean,” it said in a statement.

The United States imposed the embargo in 1987 in a bid to avoid an arms race and encourage a peaceful resolution on the island, whose population is majority Greek.

Critics say the decision backfired by forcing Cyprus, now an EU member, to seek other partners, even as Turkey — despite its NATO membership — angered the United States by buying an advanced arms system from Russia.

Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 in response to a coup engineered by the then-military regime in Athens, which sought to unite the island with Greece.

The island has remained largely peaceful in the ensuing decades, with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders working to build ties in recent years.

But tensions have recently flared over Turkey’s drilling for gas off the island, with the European Union calling the move illegal.

US officials, at the same time, have encouraged the warming relations with Israel of both Cyprus and Greece.”

“Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman rejected the US’ “baseless” claim of seizing an Iranian ship carrying weapons to Yemen.

  9. Turkey Escalates in Libya with Naval, Air Maneuvers
    https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/2379706/turkey-escalates-libya-naval-air-maneuvers

“Turkish and Russian chiefs of staff have discussed the latest developments in Libya in addition to Moscow’s call on Ankara to mediate with the Government of National Accord to agree on a ceasefire and join the peace process.

Their talks came as the Turkish Navy announced that it would conduct massive naval exercises off Libya.

The expected maneuvers would be called “Naftex” and would take place off the Libyan coast in three different regions.

The Turkish naval drills will occur in international waters with the participation of 17 warplanes and eight naval vessels to “prove Turkey’s ability to control the region by air and sea.”

The maneuvers were announced following the visit of Turkish Naval Forces Commander Adm. Adnan Ozbal to Tripoli last week.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Chief of Staff Yasar Guler visited Tripoli as well and inspected the Turkish warship ‘TCG Giresun’ off Libya.

“Turkey is with the Libyan brothers. No one should doubt it, we will not give up on it,” Akar said.

Turkey does not rule out the possibility of striking Al-Jufrah airbase, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing military experts.

Such suspicions came after a video of the exercises was circulated online showing Turkish Air Force F-16 aircraft refueling in the air.

Military expert Yuri Lyamin believes that the conflict in Libya continues to develop along the path of further escalation, especially after the recent destruction of Hawk anti-aircraft missile systems at Al-Watiya airbase.

The Turkish presidency described the attack on the air defense system at the base as a “legal violation.”

Guler and his Russian counterpart Valery Gerasimov discussed Libya on Wednesday, during a phone call. This followed a statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Turkey and Russia are working on an immediate ceasefire in Libya.”

  10. Libya’s Haftar Vows to Fight Turkey
    https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/2379831/libya%E2%80%99s-haftar-vows-fight-turkey

“Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar said that the fight against Turkish aggression will not stop as a battle loomed on the horizon in Sirte amid ongoing reinforcements by the Government of National Accord, led by Fayez al-Sarraj.

In a speech at the Military College in the city of Tocra, Haftar said that international quests for a political and fair settlement shouldn’t be exploited for bringing invaders and mercenaries in addition to reinforcing the enemy’s capabilities.

Haftar further hailed friendly and brotherly states, mainly the UAE and Egypt, that support the Libyans and the armed forces against Turkish greed.

His speech came as pro-Sarraj local media reported new military reinforcements were sent to the forces of the Turkey-backed GNA in locations near Sirte.

Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa James Cleverly said “the UK is deeply concerned at the ongoing conflict, fueled by reckless international interventions, and the unacceptable humanitarian and human rights cost.”

“It is shocking that the World Health Organization ranked Libya first in the world, ahead of Afghanistan and Syria, in numbers of attacks on health facilities and staff from January to May 2020,” he said.

US Permanent Representative Kelly Kraft also stressed that there is no place for foreign mercenaries or proxy agents, especially forces fighting on behalf of Russia.

Kraft expressed concern about what is going on in the cities of Sirte and Jafra close to the Libyan Oil Crescent, and stressed having reports that weapons and mines are transferred to Libyan areas for control, in clear violation of Libyan sovereignty.

“It is more urgent than ever that foreign interferences in the Libyan conflict cease,” France’s UN ambassador Nicolas de Riviere said.

“The risks of regional escalation and a “Syrianization” of Libya are real. Despite the relative calm and the stabilization of the front line on the Sirte-Joufra axis, the continued military reinforcement of both camps is worrying,” he added.”

  11. Bahrain convicts 5 officials, 4 banks in money laundering case
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200709-bahrain-convicts-5-officials-4-banks-in-money-laundering-case/

“Bahrain’s High Criminal Court has convicted five officials in one Bahraini bank and three Iranian banks in a major money laundering case.

The court sentenced officials at Bahrain’s Future Bank to five years in prison and fined them a million Bahraini dinars ($2.65 million) each. The same fine was imposed on the other banks.

The court ordered the confiscation of funds transferred that were made by the banks involved and were the subject of the money laundering case.

According to the website of the Bahraini newspaper Daily Tribune, Future Bank, which operates under the supervision of two Iranian banks “carried out thousands of international financial transactions” for Iranian entities that are allegedly “implicated in funding terrorism or which are under international sanctions,” allowing these entities to avoid organisational auditing.”

  12. Qatar invests €25bn in Germany
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200709-qatar-invests-e25bn-in-germany/

“Qatari investments in Germany were estimated at around €25 billion with more than 300 German companies operating in the Qatari market in various sectors, Qatari Ambassador to Germany Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari disclosed.

In an interview with the German Near and Middle East Association, Al-Kuwari notes that the Qatari economy is continuing to grow sustainably, creating a wide variety of opportunities for local and foreign investors.

Excerpts of the interview were reported by the Qatari Foreign Ministry, where Al-Kuwari affirms that Qatar is an investor in major German companies and aims to further enhance its ties with Germany.

Al-Kuwari explains that: “Qatar continues to prosper, with the country looking to diversify its economic streams by investing in major companies like Siemens, Duetsche Bank and Volkswagen,” adding that recent years have seen the country become more independent, investing in new markets through economic partnerships.

Al-Kuwari expressed Qatar’s desire to enhance its economic ties with Germany, with a focus on small and medium enterprises, which represent 80 per cent of German companies in 2018.”

  13. Afghanistan says it will not release 600 ‘too dangerous’ Taliban captives
    https://english.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/7/8/afghanistan-says-will-not-release-600-too-dangerous-taliban

“Afghan authorities said Wednesday they will not release hundreds of Taliban captives deemed “too dangerous” despite planned peace talks that hinge on the prisoner exchange.

Under the terms of a US-Taliban deal, Kabul pledged to free some 5,000 Taliban prisoners in a swap that would see the insurgents release around 1,000 Afghan security force captives.

But National Security Council (NSC) spokesman Javid Faisal told AFP that 600 prisoners the Taliban asked to be freed still had “serious criminal cases” against them.

They include people charged with murder, highway robbery and even sodomy, as well as hundreds of foreign fighters, another government official said on condition of anonymity.

“They are too dangerous to be released,” the official said.

The Taliban on Wednesday accused the government of fabricating criminal cases against the prisoners.

“If they continue to create more problems in this regard, then it shows they do not want issues to be solved through reasonable ways,” spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

But NSC spokesman Faisal insisted the government was committed to the talks.

“We are ready for peace and will release the remaining prisoners… as per the agreement – just not these hundreds of prisoners who have serious criminal cases in the courts,” he said.

Both sides have pledged to hold direct talks aimed at ending the decades-old conflict in Afghanistan after completing the exchange.

The government has already freed more than 4,000 Taliban fighters, while the insurgents have completed around two-thirds of their releases.

Earlier this week a top Afghan official said it was up to the authorities to decide who should be released.

“We don’t expect the Taliban to tell us which inmates to be released,” said Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani.”

  14. Egypt’s top appeals court upholds life sentences for Brotherhood leaders Badie, El-Shater
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/374060/Egypt/Politics-/Egypts-top-appeals-court-upholds-life-sentences-fo.aspx

“Egypt’s top appeals court, the Court of Cassation, upheld on Thursday the life sentences for the leader of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group Mohamed Badie and his deputy Khairat El-Shater and four others over violence ahead of the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The Brotherhood figureheads were sentenced to life by a lower criminal court in December 2018, in one of a series of trials against Badie and other Brotherhood leaders.

The court on Thursday rejected their appeal and upheld the sentences. The rulings are final and cannot be appealed.

The defendants were convicted of inciting violence against protesters in front of the Brotherhood headquarters, joining an illegal organisation, carrying out terrorist operations, the possession of firearms, and disturbing public peace.

The convictions are the result of clashes in front of the Brotherhood’s headquarters in Cairo on 30 June 2013 between anti-Brotherhood demonstrators calling for the Islamist president to step down and the group’s supporters.

The clashes left nine protesters dead and dozens injured. Morsi was ousted on 3 July amid mass protests against his rule.

Thursday’s sentence is the fourth final life sentence handed to Badie, totalling 100 years, a judicial source said.

The verdict is the first final ruling against El-Shater, who had been handed a total of 40 years in jail that can still be appealed.”

    https://tribune.com.pk/story/2254115/man-held-for-opening-fire-in-karachi-trust-office

“Police arrested on Thursday a man suspected of opening fire at Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International’s office near Old Sabzi Mandi the previous day.

A man had opened fire on the office and attempted to forcefully take away a woman, Bisma, who, according to the trust officials, had sought shelter at the office after leaving her home over domestic issues.

They said that Bisma identified the man as Naveed, her brother-in-law.

When the staff tried to stop Naveed, he abused them, threatening them of serious consequences, fired in the air and fled, said the welfare organisation’s founder, Sarim Burney.

A case for the incident was registered after it was reported to the police, following which they arrested Naveed.

According to police, Bisma refused to go with Naveed while he tried to take her away by force, and further investigation of the matter is underway.

“Such incidents are a common occurrence but our team puts their lives at risk to save other lives and continues to work in these dangerous situations,” said Burney, pointing out that the cooperation of police and other law enforcement agencies was essential for them to continue to operate.

He demanded immediate action against the man involved in the shooting at the trust’s office.”

  17. Libya: Countries who supported Haftar ‘bet on the losing horse,’ adviser to GNA says
    https://www.france24.com/en/africa/20200709-libya-countries-who-supported-haftar-bet-on-the-losing-horse-adviser-to-gna-says

“In an interview with FRANCE 24, Mohammed Ali Abdallah – a senior adviser to Libya’s Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) led by Fayez al-Sarraj – ruled out any negotiation with eastern strongman Khalifa Haftar or anyone close to him. He also warned that although the GNA was eager to find a political solution, it would not hesitate to push its military offensive towards the strategic town of Sirte.

Speaking to FRANCE 24 from Washington, Ali Abdallah brushed aside the threat of military intervention by Egypt, if the GNA moves towards the Libyan town of Sirte, as “a joke”. He stressed that Egypt had already been intervening in Libya as the main platform for African and Russian mercenaries fighting alongside Haftar’s forces.

The senior adviser to the GNA claimed that many countries, including France, who had supported Haftar were now realising they had “bet on the losing horse”. He also blasted the UAE for its role in the conflict, saying the government would not accept the UAE in “any political dialogue” on Libya in the future.

Reacting to the deployment of Turkish troops to support the GNA’s forces, Ali Abdallah claimed the agreement with Turkey was a legal one. He said that it did not include the establishment of permanent Turkish military bases in Libya but added that if this step was necessary to stabilise the country, it could be decided. He also argued that countries like France who have their own grievances with Turkey should not use the Libyan conflict to settle scores.

Finally, he said he regretted that Turkey had brought in Syrian mercenaries to fight on the government’s side and held out hope that they would leave, while firmly denying reports that Yemeni fighters had recently been brought in to shore up the government forces.”

  18. Afghan man stabs his wife to death on German bus
    https://rmx.news/article/article/afghan-man-stabs-his-wife-to-death-on-german-bus

“Police in the German municipality of Obergünzburg have arrested a 37-year-old Afghan who stabbed to death his 27-year-old wife of the same nationality. He murdered her in front of ten children and two adult passengers on a bus in broad daylight. After the act, the man dropped his knife and fled the scene.

The police mobilized a helicopter and conducted a major search of a nearby area, catching him on the outskirts of the city a short time later.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. This was not the man’s first violent incident, he attacked his wife last November, the police confirmed. The couple, who have four children together, lived separately before the attack.

“I heard screaming. I stopped immediately and saw a man jumping off the bus. The woman was bleeding from her chest. I tried to stop the bleeding before the ambulance arrived,” driver Marco Dennifel said in the Augsburger Allgemeine. Both the bus driver and other passengers have been offered psychological counseling following the murder.

Unfortunately, such incidents are no longer rare. In March 2019, a similar murder took place in the city of Worms where a 22-year-old failed asylum seeker from Tunisia stabbed his 21-year-old German ex-girlfriend to death following a dispute.

In 2016, a Syrian woman was killed by her husband when he beat her to death, allegedly after physically assaulting her several times in the past.

As Remix News reported at the beginning of May, Czech Police officers arrested an Afghan man on the D1 motorway near Prague who was suspected of attempting to murder his girlfriend in Germany. The 32-year-old Afghan man, who stabbed his girlfriend 20 times, was later extradited to Germany.”

  19. Ukraine: MP releases another leaked recordings with Poroshenko, Putin, Biden

Ukrainian politician Andrei Derkach on Thursday held a news conference in Kiev, publishing leaked recordings of two phone conversations allegedly featuring Ukraine’s ex-president Petro Poroshenko.

In the first conversation, which according to Derkach took place on April 30, 2015, Poroshenko talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Minsk talks.

The Ukrainian leader can be heard telling Putin that the project of sending peacekeepers to Donbass does not find any encouragement among Western partners. “They think that this is a Russian trap for me,” he says.

The two go on to discuss Poroshenko’s performance as president.

“I am proud of this and at least about the fact that my confidence and support rating does not fall,” says Poroshenko, to which Putin replies “Praise God. It is very important to have trust of people. It is the main thing, the key one.”

In another conversation released by Derkach, Poroshenko allegedly holds talks with former US Vice President Joe Biden.

It features Biden firmly condemning Poroshenko’s plans to undertake sabotage operations in Russia with covert operatives.

“Your military intelligence chief received a really clear message several weeks ago regarding our strong disapproval for proposed sabotage operation against military targets inside the Russian territory,” Biden says.

“I guarantee you that this will not happen again. Nothing like that,” Poroshenko can be heard saying.

In May, Derkach released the first batch of audio recordings allegedly featuring phone conversations between Biden and Poroshenko. The former Ukrainian leader has called the recordings a fabrication.
