Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. Journalist on Migration to Italy: ‘Many of Refugees Have Coronavirus, It Causes Panic Among People’ (sputniknews, Jul 7, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/202007071079821845-journalist-on-migration-to-italy-many-of-refugees-have-coronavirus-it-causes-panic-among-people/

“The influx of migrants to Italy has not stopped irrespective of the epidemic, quarantine and isolation. While other countries rushed to close borders for security reasons, boats with migrants continued to arrive at Sicilian ports, significantly exceeding the 2019 figures.

During such a delicate and complex period of the coronavirus epidemic, many Sicilian municipalities were confronted with a sharp increase in the influx of migrants. Ida Carmina, Mayor of Porto Empedocle (from the Five Star Movement party), asked the government for concrete assistance:

“There are no coronavirus patients in our city, but we have to suffer because of something we can’t possibly influence. The government must put an end to this, and before they say anything, let them come here and see our problems with their own eyes.”

Meanwhile, migrants arriving in Porto Empedocle aboard the NGO boat will be moved for quarantine to Moby Zazà ferry.

This problem not only damages the image of Porto Empedocle, as well as that of other Sicilian ports, it is also dangerous from the sanitary standpoint, as coronavirus-infected migrants arrive. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast man was stabbed in the chest and abdomen and was taken to a nearby hospital in Mytilene where he later died of his injuries. A 33-year-old from the Congo and a 19-year-old also from the Ivory Coast were also hospitalised after being stabbed in the abdomen and the thigh, Proto Thema reports.

Another man, whose nationality is not specified by the newspaper report, was also treated for injuries after being hit in the head. The Afghan who is suspected of carrying out the brutal attack was placed into local police custody.

    What’s Happening:

President Trump made a major promise during his 2016 campaign to end corruption within the government, or to “drain the swamp.” It’s become so common for government officials to bend the law to benefit themselves, it almost seemed as if Americans were okay with it.

But since Trump took over the presidency—and appointed tough prosecutors and investigators within the DOJ—things began to happen. Over the last few years, we’ve learned about how the FBI has arrested leaders in state and local governments for various crimes (see the former mayor of Baltimore).

  6. Mayor, Soldiers Among Eight Killed in Burkina Faso Attack
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/07/07/burkina-faso-attack-kills-eight/

“Gunmen ambushed a convoy in northern Burkina Faso on Monday, killing at least eight people including five soldiers and a town mayor, security and local sources said.

“Armed individuals attacked a convoy of the Pensa town hall, which was under escort,” a local source in the nearby town of Barsalogho told AFP.

Among those killed was Pensa Mayor Souleymane Zabre, while three others in his vehicle are missing, the source added.

A military source said five soldiers were also killed in the attack, along with two “trackers.”

Burkina Faso, one of the world’s poorest countries, has battled a jihadist insurgency since 2015 that spread from neighboring Mali. The north and east of the country are the regions most affected by jihadist killings. The violence has forced more than one million to flee their homes.

Attacks in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso killed at least 4,000 people in 2019, according to the United Nations. The authorities have been unable to stem the spiral of violence despite help from foreign forces — France has 5,100 troops deployed in the region.”

  7. Bandits Kill 15 Farmers in Northern Nigeria: Police Sources
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/07/07/nigeria-bandits-kill-fifteen/

“Gunmen on Monday killed 15 farmers in Nigeria‘s northwest Katsina state, police said, in the latest violence by cattle thieves in the restive region.

Roughly 200 gunmen on motorcycles besieged the farmers in Yargamji village, 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the state capital Katsina, opening fire on them, police spokesman Gambo Isah told AFP.

“Fifteen bodies were recovered from the farms after the attack which was carried out by bandits,” Isah said, adding that counter-terrorism personnel were sent to “engage the bandits.”

    Hiding in the Woods
Rural communities in Katsina, President Muhammadu Buhari‘s home state, have been repeatedly targeted by gangs of cattle thieves and kidnappers. Last month, they killed 57 people in raids on several villages in the state.

Attempts by local authorities to broker peace with the criminal gangs have not been successful. The military has also carried out air raids on bandit camps in Katsina and neighboring Zamfara state to end the incessant killings.

The gangs maintain camps in the vast Rugu forest which straddles Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna and Niger states from where they launch deadly attacks.”

The US drone strike that killed Iran’s most powerful general during an official visit to Baghdad was illegal under international law, according to the United Nations most senior investigator into extrajudicial killings.

Agnès Callamard, the UN special rapporteur, said that Washington had failed to provide sufficient evidence that there was an imminent threat to its interests to justify the strike on Qasem Soleimani’s convoy as it left Baghdad airport on January 3.

Soleimani, the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force, was the mastermind of Iran’s regional network of proxy armies across the Middle East.

“Morocco on Tuesday arrested four alleged members of a “terrorist cell” linked to the Islamic State group who had plotted to attack “sensitive sites” in the kingdom, the interior ministry said.

The men, aged between 21 and 26, were arrested in the northeastern city of Nador, said a ministry statement.

The suspects, “including the brother of a fighter of Daesh,” the Arabic acronym for IS, had been “in close contact” with members of another cell dismantled in December in a joint operation with Spain, it said.

The four had planned to “carry out terrorist attacks targeting sensitive sites in the kingdom,” the ministry said.

The arrests were carried out by the anti-terrorism body the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations, which had taken the suspects into custody “for further investigation”.

  10. Six Shot Dead in Bangladesh’s Restive Southeast: Police Sources
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2020/07/07/six-shot-dead-bangladesh/

“At least six tribal activists were shot dead Tuesday in an ambush by a rival group in Bangladesh’s restive Chittagong Hill Tracts, where scores have died in an insurgency in recent years, police said.

Gunmen attacked supporters of a splinter group off the Jan Sanhati Samiti (JSS) insurgent movement at Bagmara in Bandarban district, about 400 kilometers southeast of the capital Dhaka, according to officers.

The splinter group’s district head was among the dead and three other people were critically wounded, S.M. Mobassher Hossain, deputy head of the Bandarban police, told AFP.

The JSS is the main insurgent group in Bangladesh‘s three Chittagong hill districts that include Bandarban.

It fought a battle with government forces that claimed about 2,500 lives in the area from the early 1980s until a peace treaty was signed in 1997.

Despite the accord and withdrawal of most troops from the region, unrest has continued as tribal groups demand key clauses of the deal be implemented, including dismantling the villages of Bengali settlers and army camps.

In recent years insurgent groups have splintered, setting off in-fighting that has claimed scores of lives including several faction leaders.

In March last year, seven people were killed during a battle in Bandarban.”

According to the publication, Saad Al-Jabri held a cabinet-rank intelligence post under deposed Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef and has been living in Toronto since a 2017 palace coup in Riyadh.

The Saudis attempted to have Al-Jabri arrested by issuing a “red notice” order through Interpol, the international co-operation organisation for police, in late 2017. In 2018, a visiting Saudi delegation also pressed Canada to extradite him.

The Canadian government has not commented on the matter, with a Justice Department spokesperson saying in statement that extradition requests are confidential.

“We cannot comment on the existence of extradition requests for specific individuals until the request is made public by the courts,” he said.

In recent months, Bin Salman has also increased pressure on Al-Jabri’s relatives, detaining his adult children, to force him to return to the kingdom, his family said.”

  20. ‘Alarm bells should ring’: New study sheds light on problems of Sweden’s vulnerable areas
    https://www.thelocal.se/20200707/when-young-people-are-more-likely-to-witness-crime-than-know-a-ceo-alarm-bells-should-ring-sweden

“One in 18 of Sweden’s residents lives in a so-called vulnerable area, where criminality is higher than average and trust in authorities lower. A new study reveals how political priorities differ in these neighbourhoods compared to the general population.

In general, people in these areas said there have been positive developments in police work over the past five years, but negative trends in criminality. And their trust in Swedish media, politicians, and local authorities was much lower than for the Swedish population as a whole.

In the report, carried out by Novus on behalf of The Global Village Foundation, residents of 60 socioeconomically vulnerable areas were asked about how things had developed in these areas, and their relationship with different Swedish authorities.

Almost half (46 percent) thought that over the past five years things had got worse when it came to crime.

People in these areas were significantly more likely than the general population to have personal experience of crime.

Three times as many respondents had experienced or knew someone who had experienced a shooting (17 percent), twice as many knew someone who had been affected by religious radicalisation (13 percent) and twice as many for so-called honour violence (6 percent).

Looking only at the figures for young men from vulnerable areas, these figures were even higher: 43 percent had witnessed or knew someone who had witnessed drug selling, and the equivalent figures were 21 percent for shootings, 30 percent for assault and 17 percent for radicalisation.

People in vulnerable areas were also exposed to discrimination to a higher extent: 36 percent personally knew someone who had experienced discrimination, compared to 27 percent in the general population. Among young adults (18-29 years), 45 percent had personally experienced or know someone who had been discriminated against.

One promising finding was that over half (53 percent) of those surveyed said that police development was moving in the right direction over the past five years. That figure was almost twice as high as for the general population, only 24 percent of whom thought police work had improved.

In recent years, police and other emergency services have worked hard to build trust in these neighbourhoods. Part of this is simply identifying the socioeconomically areas, which have been categorised since 2015 – although some local authorities have called for the list not to be made public due to the stigma associated with the label.

Police have also focused on working closely with local communities including through school visits and supporting local business owners.

In vulnerable areas, residents said they believed the top three political issues for Sweden were healthcare, immigration, and schools, and that the top issues for their neighbourhood were law and order, schools, and integration.

Those are more or less the same top issues as for the Swedish population as a whole, with one important difference: integration was a higher priority for those in vulnerable areas.

Among the general population, the top issues for Sweden were reported as healthcare, immigration, and the labour market, and within their own neighbourhood schools, law and order, and immigration.

There were also key differences in levels of trust for different institutions.

Almost two thirds (64 percent) had high trust in police, compared to 41 percent trust for the Swedish media and just 47 percent trust in the government. And nearly two thirds of those surveyed said that there was too great a distance between Swedish politicians and ordinary citizens.

This was backed up by the fact that only 26 percent of those surveyed said they personally knew a politician, compared to 45 percent of people living in Sweden as a whole. Respondents were significantly more likely to answer ‘yes’ to that question if they had a high level of education or were born in Sweden.

People in vulnerable areas were also less likely to know a CEO (32 percent compared to 61 percent of the general population, and 28 percent for 18-29-year olds in vulnerable areas compared to 41 percent of the same age group in the general population).

“When young people are more likely to witness criminal acts than running into a politician or CEO, alarms should ring loudly. We need to address these issues if we want to secure the future of our democracy and have a socially sustainable development,” said the Global Village Foundation’s director Ahmed Abdirahman.

He said that he hoped more politicians and CEOs would participate in Järvaveckan 2021 – a week-long political festival held in the suburbs, which attracts representatives from Sweden’s major parties.

“We need to understand the importance of role models and diversity. My recommendation to government agencies, politicians and the business sector is to recruit diverse and to engage these communities – it’s not just about trust in agencies, it’s about trust in democracy and has long term consequences. People have to recognise themselves, it’s very important to have diversity in a democracy and society,” Abdirahman explained.

“Trust is low in many different government agencies and in the government itself compared to the general population, but one area that sticks out is trust for nonprofit organisations – that’s much higher than among the general population.

“Sweden is a country where education is free and so on, but it’s not about the beautiful words in the constitution, it’s about how we enact those values and whether the opportunities are there in practice,” he explained. “I believe and hope they want to improve relationships, but I want to see it happening.””

  21. “BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,230, July 18, 2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Notwithstanding the seeming friendship between Chinese president Xi Jinping and Russian president Vladimir Putin, and the growing congruence of both countries’ interests in undermining the US-led international order, relations between Russia and China remain at their core as brittle and prone to mutual suspicion and distrust as they have in the past. It is not unreasonable to expect that that underlying animosity will erupt into violence in the relatively near future.”

“From the perspective of a strategic planner in Moscow, China – which contains a billion-and-a-half people – not only dwarfs Mother Russia in population, national power, and economic might. It has also – much more worryingly – become a near military equal, prone to intimidation and throwing its weight around its periphery at will.”

  24. BREITBART – Wikipedia Editors Sanitize the Page of Potential Biden VP Kamala Harris

An article in the Intercept last week reported that a Wikipedia editor was scrubbing the page of former Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), considered a prominent member of the shortlist to be Joe Biden’s Vice Presidental pick. The piece mentioned changes such as removing a past campaign finance scandal and Harris’ record as a hard-line prosecutor. Changes not mentioned include removals of the alleged role nepotism played in her early political career and significant favorable additions about Harris.

Other Wikipedia editors have begun working to undo the changes made to the Harris page, although many details remain missing. On Twitter, the Wikipedia editor responsible for most removals was identified as Bao Nguyen, a former volunteer organizer for the Harris campaign. Similarly, editors previously created pages for fellow Presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang without disclosing their connections to them.

The Intercept article by Aida Chavez notes that in 2016, editors had been heavily involved in contributing to the article on Tim Kaine prior to him being announced as Hillary Clinton’s Vice Presidential pick. As a result, a user on Reddit created a script to monitor for activity about prospective VP picks for Biden and noticed significant editing of the page for Kamala Harris. Other Reddit users identified a single editor by the username “Bnguyen1114” as the primary party responsible for the activity.

Chavez delved into the editor’s activity on the Harris page and how he removed content potentially unfavorable to Harris. Among the edits noted was the removal of a paragraph regarding her defense of Orange County prosecutors implicated in widespread misconduct, which Nguyen claimed was removed for “proof-reading” yet not restored until after the Intercept piece. Nguyen also removed details about a campaign finance violation involving Harris’ campaign for District Attorney, removing most criticism of defenses Harris gave for the violation. A quote from Harris stating “it is not progressive to be soft on crime” was also removed by Nguyen, but restored shortly after the Intercept article.

Not mentioned were other removals of unflattering material by Nguyen. These included details about Harris benefiting in her early political career from a relationship with future San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, then the Speaker of the California Assembly, who she dated. Also excluded were the substantial salaries she earned at positions to which Brown appointed her and a quote from Brown’s mayoral campaign manager about how the relationship benefited Harris. Another editor subsequently removed all mention of Brown, claiming “sexist” framing. Mention of Brown’s appointments was later restored, though only noting them and briefly stating she and Brown were in a relationship at the time.

One other detail removed involved how Harris handled an investigation into the death of Mitrice Richardson, a black woman who, after being detained by the Malibu sheriff’s department for not paying her bill at a diner, was released in the middle of the night without a car or phone and was later found dead in a canyon. Harris eventually closed an investigation she had opened into the death under pressure from the public, stating there was insufficient evidence for criminal charges. Mention of the Richardson case is still absent from the article.

Many edits Nguyen made to the article on Harris also added positive material. This included significantly expanding content about her securing of mortgage settlements with the major banks, citing her own memoir for some details, and addition of material lauding her questioning of Attorney General Bill Barr during his nomination, uncritically repeating her claims Barr refused to answer her for fear of perjury. Nearly all the content in both instances remains in the article. Much of the extensive positive expansion by Nguyen was reversed by administrator Michel Aaij, or “Drmies” on Wikipedia, calling it “grossly excessive and excessively detailed” and poorly-sourced. Following Aaij’s reversal, Nguyen began cutting extensively from the article instead.

Since the Intercept article, editors have attempted to reverse a number of changes Nguyen made to the article, though have so far rejected completely undoing his removals, arguing every change should be vetted carefully. This has not necessarily fixed the issues with Nguyen’s removals. While a brief mention of the campaign finance scandal when Harris ran for District Attorney has been expanded, where the material prior to being removed noted her many attempts to excuse, defend, or downplay, the campaign finance violation, the article now only states Harris accepted “full blame” for the violation.

Readers of the Intercept article began investigating Nguyen’s identity after the piece was published. An IP address apparently belonging to Nguyen was identified due to edits made right before his account’s first edits. Combined with his use of the same account name on another social media site, online sleuths identified the editor as Bao Nguyen, a Bay area lawyer listed on LinkedIn as a “Volunteer Organizing Leader” for the Harris Presidential Campaign. Katherine Maher, Executive Director of the Foundation that owns Wikipedia, criticized Nguyen’s identification as doxing in a reply to one person posting the name on Twitter and also criticized Nguyen for violating policies on conflicts of interest. On Wikipedia, Nguyen acknowledged the accuracy of the identification, though claimed he mistakenly thought his common last name made him sufficiently untraceable.

While Nguyen has denied being “employed” by the Harris campaign, he stated that he has volunteered for Democratic campaigns and met Harris. Such volunteer work could be construed as a “conflict of interest” on Wikipedia, which editors are expected to disclose on articles they edit. His failure to disclose is not unusual, as the creator of the page on 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg also volunteered in one of his campaigns, but did not disclose this fact. More egregiously, the editor who created Wikipedia’s page on Andrew Yang, another 2020 candidate, did not disclose that she was the marketing manager for Yang’s non-profit. She later served on his campaign.

Such editing by editors with conflicts of interest, including paid editing as with Yang’s page, is a common problem on Wikipedia even when going against policies and, in cases of undisclosed paid editing, the site’s Terms of Use. However, Wikipedia’s greatest source of bias on political articles remains the site’s agenda-driven editors whose editing has become so slanted even the site’s own co-founder has accused Wikipedia of becoming too left-wing.
